Dorothy worked at Lincoln Life Garden Italian Restaurant, Fort Wayne, Insurance Company, Fort Wayne. this coming Feb. 14. But they don’t need an excuse to treat each other lovingly. It’s Shortly after school Lyle enlisted in the Army and was stationed in been a daily habit for nearly 66 years.

Many successful couples meet through Bremerhaven, Germany. There he met a fellow soldier, Richblind dates, and you can count the Freard Galloway from Fort Wayne, imuths among them. Chances are the couple probably would not have met while and they became good friends.

Eventually their assigned duties separated them, but before their three-year enlistment ended, they again got together while processing out of the service and, in fact, were on the same ship home to the United States.

“Richard asked me if I had a girlfriend back home,” Lyle related. “When I said I didn’t, he said his wife, Phyllis, had a cousin that might be a good fit.

He eventually gave me her phone number.”

“When he called me, what do you think was his first question?” asked Dorothy. “He inquired, ‘What do you look like?’” Dorothy Continued on page 3

A man with two passions %\ 52' .,1* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Mel Klein is a man with two passions. First is his job at Home Lumber where he has been an estimator and EWP designer for the past 18 years. The second is racing his number 34 yellow and blue stock car on the Angola asphalt track Saturdays throughout the summer.

“Working at Home Lumber is great!” he said. “It’s very much a family oriented organization.

We all get along fine and are dedicated to doing the best possible job for our clients.”

Klein’s not in any hurry to leave, but is considering retiring when he reaches 68 in two more years. That would bring his total number of years in the lumber business to 45. He got his start at Wicks Lumber, where he worked 12 years doing much the same as he does now, which is the company’s job estimating and designing engineered wood products (I-joists for floors). He also designs kitchens.

However, just before starting student teaching he got some advice from his dad. “He told me to do anything I wanted to do, but don’t become a teacher.”

So, he managed a “big box” store in the 1980s when they were just coming into their own, spending most of his time training people who then got transferred to other stores in the chain. From there he tried the restaurant business – which he hated. He worked at a lumber yard summers during college and recalled it as a

pleasant experience, so he applied at 84 Lumber and ended up in Terre Haute. The restaurant position brought him to Fort Wayne. Then he went to Wickes, started as yard foreman in 1992 and was quickly promoted to estimator.

“That was the start of my 30year career in the Fort Wayne area,” detailed Klein. “That was also before computers, when everything was done by hand. I took advantage of the opportunity to learn the new technology and apply it toward becoming a better salesman,

designer and manager.”

Klein’s racing hobby has not been without its bumps, bruises and crashes. He and his number 34 car have been bounced off the retaining wall at the Angola track numerous times and after tangling with some other cars, he’s even ended upside down, held in place by his safety harness with the car on its top.

“I’m just a one-horse shop competing against drivers onethird my age backed by parents who are bankrolling their kids’ racing ambitions,” noted

Klein. “Some have a crew of mechanics, better funding and all the latest technology to help them. After work I go home, tinker with the car and race Saturday nights during the summer. That doesn’t leave much time for my other passion, golf. I’ve won a few races and have a couple trophies, but being on the track and competing is what it’s all about. It’s my passion and I’m going to keep doing it as long as I can, even if age might be catching up with me.”

Arts United to receive $10,000 grant for county folklife study Arts United has been approved for a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support the Allen County folklife study. In partnership with Traditional Arts Indiana, Arts United will lead this study of Allen County’s community cultures’ traditional dance and related art forms.

This project is one of 1,248 projects across America totaling $28,840,000 that were selected to

receive this first round of fiscal year 2022 funding in the Grants for Arts Projects category, as well as only one of two projects selected to receive funding in northeast Indiana.

“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support arts projects like this one from Arts United that help support the community’s creative economy,” said NEA acting chair Ann Eilers. “Arts United of Greater

Fort Wayne is among the arts organizations nationwide using the arts as a source of strength, a path to well-being, and providing access and opportunity for people to connect and find joy through the arts.”

“Arts United is thrilled to receive a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts,” said Susan Mendenhall, president of Arts United. “We’re looking forward to partnering with Traditional Arts Indiana to support and celebrate the cultural traditions of dance and related art forms like music, instruments and dress that thrive in Allen County.”

“Community scholar training is a proven strategy to help communities identify, document and make use of their distinctive cultural traditions and practices,” said Jon Kay, director of Traditional Arts Indiana. “I look for-

ward to working with the region’s diverse community partners to bring this opportunity to the Fort Wayne area.”

The Allen County folklife study, planned to be conducted in 2022, will include contracting five Allen County folklife scholars.

These scholars will represent and serve as a liaison to a cultural community that celebrates and honors its culture through dance and related art forms, conduct artist interviews, participate in training led by Traditional Arts Indiana, present a performance of the dance form and advise Arts United and Traditional Arts Indiana about how to best support this type of cultural community programming in the future.

Greater Fort Wayne Inc. rolls out 10-year economic development plan The fastest-growing metro in the Great Lakes region is aiming for even more success in the next decade — and now there’s a plan to make it a reality.

Community leaders recently revealed the new “Allen County Together” economic development action plan. ACT provides a blueprint for the next 10 years of building a nationally recognized economy in Allen County.

“The progress we’ve seen across Allen County over the past 10-12 years has been remarkable. There’s no question we’ve become one of the top communities in the Great Lakes region — but we can’t get complacent,” said John Urbahns, president and CEO of Greater Fort Wayne Inc. “The ACT plan challenges us to reach our full potential as a community, and lays out the next steps to get us there.”

The plan is designed to drive the Allen County economy forward by bolstering three community characteristics, each supported by a series of bold projects: High Growth • Attract $1 billion in private investment to the riverfront in downtown Fort Wayne by the end of 2031.

• Attract and grow 2,500 net new high-wage jobs by the end of 2031 in research and development, engineering, IT, regional headquarters and

tech-driven growth industries.

• Build 2,500 on- and off-campus student housing units — and other amenities associated with local highereducation institutions — by the end of 2031 to help Fort Wayne become a widely recognized college town.

Innovative • Become recognized as a “Top 10 Music City” by the end of 2031 through expanded festivals, music venues, training and education and musicindustry innovation.

• Become a premier “Industry 4.0” automotive tech community and add 2,500 net new jobs in the automotive tech sector by the end of 2031.

Freimuths prove Continued from page 1 told him she had black hair, green eyes and freckles. The answer must have satisfied him and after about a 15-minute conversation they made plans for a date. Subsequently, it turned into a double date with Richard and Phyllis, journeying to Ohio where they could order beer back then at age 18, Lyle explained. “Eventually the Galloways went to the bar,” he continued, “and Dorothy and I got acquainted.”

It was 1955 and the new couple only dated on weekends since Lyle returned to working as a machine operator on G.E.’s second shift. “But I looked into those green eyes and I just kinda knew,” Lyle mused. “I bought a ring and proposed in the winter of 1955,” said Lyle.

They were married on May 26, 1956 — one day after Dorothy’s

20th birthday. “I didn’t want to be a teenage bride,” she confessed.

The couple have three children: Michelle (John) Bodigon, of Ossian; Kevin (Becky) Freimuth, of Fripp Island, S.C.; and Stuart (deceased in 2020) (Erin) Freimuth, Fort Wayne.

They have seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren with a sixth due in August.

Lyle also worked at Retail Credit Company, Angola, as an insurance investigator for five years; and in Fort Wayne in Lincoln Life’s claims department and for K&K Insurance for a total of 32 years. Dorothy was employed at L.S. Ayres and Company for 27 years.

Their secret for a good marriage? “Never go to bed angry, apologize if you disagree and don’t be afraid to say ‘I’m sorry,’” both emphasized.

The plan builds on the significant momentum created in Allen County in the last decade or more, marked by accomplishments including: • Fort Wayne becoming the fastest-growing metro area in the Great Lakes region in 2020.

• Four consecutive years of positive domestic migration in Allen County.

• More than $1 billion in private investment in downtown Fort Wayne since 2009.

• $2 billion in construction permits issued in Allen County in 2021 — setting a new record for the third year out of the past four.

“The successes of Allen County have put our community in a position to be able to think long-term about economic development,” Allen County Com-

missioners Rich Beck, Therese Brown and Nelson Peters said in a joint statement. “The work we do now will determine how fast and how successfully we move our community forward together through and past the challenges of today.”

“I continue to be encouraged by the positive momentum and investments we’re experiencing in Fort Wayne and Allen County,” Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry said. “I’m looking forward to additional projects and initiatives in our community as we come together to enhance an already award-winning city and county. It’s our time to make a lasting impact for individuals, families, and businesses.”

ACT was created with funding support from the City of Fort Wayne, Allen County Commissioners, and Indiana Michigan Power. Austin, Texasbased TIP Strategies assisted in crafting the strategy.

As part of the discovery process for the project, the consulting team conducted 20 roundtables and dozens of individual interviews to gather information and ideas from more than 200 local stakeholders. These included business leaders, elected officials, educational

leaders, developers, investors, community activists and advocates, and other stakeholders in Fort Wayne and Allen County.

“I applaud the community for being committed to tackling the issues that will position Allen County for a bright future,” said Tracye McDaniel, president of TIP Strategies. “Collaboration across the public, private and nonprofit sectors is the cornerstone to building healthy, resilient communities, and we found that collaboration in our work in Allen County.”

“If we’re going to drive our community forward, we need to keep raising the bar — and that’s what ACT does. It challenges us to build a community with expanded, equitable opportunities for individuals and families to live their best lives here,” said Ellen Cutter, GFW Inc. vice president of economic development. “Now we’ve got to do the work to make these projects a reality. We know it won’t always be easy, but if we work together, we can create a better future in Allen County.”

Kaufman first female president of Astrological Society %\ 52' .,1* )HDWXUH :ULWHU The first female president of the Fort Wayne Astronomical Society, Julie Kaufman, likes to keep her brain activated. She’s a hands-on person who likes to know what makes things tick.

Besides stargazing, she builds rockets and loves to pilot gliders.

“I was kind of a strange kid,” she said.

At an early age, the Tampa,

Fla., native scrounged old television parts from repair shops to build radios. She got her ham radio license at age 16 and built her own set.

After high school she spent two years in the U.S. Army, primarily to be able to take advantage of the GI Bill and attend college. Kaufman graduated from the University of South Florida in Tampa with an engineering technology degree.

With degree in hand she signed on with a Tennessee firm where she worked on missile components for six and a half years, then to a cable TV equipment company in Georgia and then a Massachusetts-based contract company that sent her on a six-month assignment to ITT in Fort Wayne.

Her ITT supervisor liked her work and after she went back to Georgia he bought out her contract and brought her back to Fort Wayne where she worked for 10 years. When the company was in the process of being sold, she moved to New Jersey for four years to work on GPS satellites. When that company froze pensions, she got on the internet and ended up in Huntington working on radio frequency equipment at United Technology.

“I guess you could say I’m pretty self-motivated, so when I get on a project I like to dive in head first,” Kaufman said. “I was fortunate as a young engineer to get a broad, well-rounded experience in both hardware and software.”

She retired in 2019 and moved into a house in New Haven that she had purchased in 2017. “I’d always been in rented houses, apartments or condos,” she said. “I had made up my mind that this was where I wanted to retire from when I worked at ITT. “I’ve always worked with men and was comfortable in a male dominated atmosphere. So being president of a primarily male organization was not a big deal. The vice president is also

From April through November (weather permitting) the society hosts Saturday night stargazing.

Added Kaufman, “It starts about an hour after sunset and, as long as it’s not raining or fogged in, we invite the public to come to our observatory in Jefferson Township Park off Dawkins Road east of New Haven and look through our powerful telescopes at the stars and constellations. It’s free. Visitors are welcome to bring their own telescopes and set them up on

the concrete pads outside the building.”

Kaufman learned about the society in early 2000 when its telescope was located at Fox Island Park. She got involved, became a member of the board and served as secretary before moving to New Jersey. On returning she became treasurer and is now president. Her main concern is that her presidency will be known as the COVID-19 administration.

Greater Fort Wayne Inc. kicks off 40th year of leadership program The 40th year of the Leadership Fort Wayne program is officially underway. Greater Fort Wayne Inc. today introduced the landmark 52-member Class of 2022.

LFW is a nine-month program that provides an in-depth view of the Fort Wayne/Allen County community while developing each participant’s leadership skills. By developing these skills, participants become better prepared to positively impact the community and their workplaces.

Since 1983, Leadership Fort Wayne has graduated nearly 1,500 individuals, many of whom now serve on or lead nonprofit boards, hold elected office or own their own businesses.

This year’s class reflects the community’s diverse population.

Community members, business leaders and program alumni banded together over the past year to raise funds to secure eight fully-funded seats (and partial funding for four more) for people from underrepresented backgrounds. The fundraising effort was part of GFW Inc.’s multifaceted push to increase diversity, equity and inclusion.

The cohort recently kicked off its schedule with orientation sessions at the Clyde Theatre.

Is this all there is to it, Mommy?

One toasty day in the summer of 1959, New York songwriter Paul Vance took his family to Long Island’s %\ 5$1'$/ Lido Beach. & +,// There his wife, Margie, surprised their nine-year-old daughter Paula with a bikini bathing suit. Paula’s reaction: “Is this all there is to it, Mommy?” The youngster changed in the Lido’s public locker but felt embarrassed about her new swimwear. She was eventually coaxed out, but when she eased into the water, her bathing costume bottom soon slipped off.

Paula was understandably mortified. But an hour after the family returned home, her enterprising father, always on the lookout for a new song idea, used the embarrassing moment to write the lyrics to a silly novelty. Vance then passed them to his songwriting partner, Lee Pockriss, who quickly worked up a snappy melody. The result was the million-selling 1960 single, “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” by

17-year-old Brian Hyland.

That hit marked a breakthrough in America’s inevitable acceptance of a once-scandalous swimwear item. Two years later, in “Dr. No,” the first James Bond flick, Ursula Andress caused jaws to drop worldwide when she emerged from the sea in a clinging two-piece. The next year, voluptuous ex-Mouseketeer Annette Funicello appeared in one (to the chagrin of Walt Disney) in “Beach Party.” In 1964, Sports Illustrated published its first swimsuit edition, a stunning bikini-clad model adorning its cover.

The skimpy beachwear as we know it has actually been around since July 1946, when it first appeared at a poolside fashion show in Paris. So scandalous was the design that the fashion models who were scheduled to debut it refused to wear the daringly cut item, which was made from a meager 30 inches of fabric and showed (horrors) the female belly button. As a result, the designer instead hired a 19-year-old stripper named Micheline Bernardini. She was photographed later holding a matchbox to show that the new swimsuit could be stuffed inside.

The international news in 1946 included reports of the

U.S. testing atomic bombs on the remote Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The adjective “atomic” was often used to describe anything intense, and, in less politically correct times (sorry, ladies), attractive women were often called “bombshells,” which was a forerunner of the term “sex symbol.” So it made sense that, in that year, two competing French designers, Jacque Heim and Louis Reard, dubbed their ultra-brief outfits atome and le bikini, respectively.

During the later ‘40s, seaside dress codes began to loosen. Film stars Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, Rita Hayworth and Esther Williams frequently appeared in two-piece costumes.

In 1956, French sexpot Brigette Bardot caused a sensation in her skimpy two-piece in the film “And God Created Woman.” But it was Brian Hyland’s 1960 ear candy that, along with shifting social mores and increasing independence for women, helped knock down remaining barriers to make way for the bikini to become an accepted part of American summer wardrobes, as young women everywhere rushed out to embrace the once-disreputable outfits.

Garcia can’t wait for next year’s Polar Bear Club Plunge %\ 52' .,1* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Once a year, Jaime Garcia and a couple hundred of his friends go “swimming.” He’s been doing it on New Year’s Day for the past 31 years.

They gather at the boat ramp at Johnny Appleseed Park and at the appointed time he leads the screaming crowd down the ramp into the frigid waters of the St. Joseph River.

Sometimes they jump into a 30-foot-by-50-foot hole that’s been hacked into the ice. This year the temperature was 39 degrees. A cold drizzle made it feel like 32.

“That never seems to deter the ‘swimmers,’” said Garcia.

“COVID-19, however, has cut the number of participants considerably. Before COVID we got between 250 and 300 who came to kick off the New

Year with a stimulating dip.

Some of them say it washes out the old, brings in the new and refreshes the soul. A bunch of motorcyclists used to come to take in the spectacle along with a group of bicyclists who always ended their ride here in time to witness the plunge.”

It’s all part of the annual Polar Bear Club’s river plunge.

“The media always shows up and it’s a lot of fun,” noted Garcia. “We usually head into the water at precisely 2 p.m.

Most of the group don’t actually swim. In fact they’re back on the ramp heading for their towels and warm clothes in no time at all. Nobody lingers long.”

Garcia pointed out it’s not necessary to be a member of the Polar Bear Club to participate. “Just show up,” he said.

A few of us plunge veterans make arrangements with the city to provide barricades so onlookers don’t get trampled when the surge to the water begins and someone always contacts the fire department.”

When Garcia was a student at Carroll High School he joined the Junior Achievement company sponsored by the Tokheim Corporation.

“We always hear from bystanders that we’re a bunch of crazies, but then how crazy are the people who come out in the rain and cold to watch other crazies run into the river? Maybe we are a bit off, but once you’ve done it, you can’t wait for the year to pass so you can do it again,” Garcia said. “This year there were people who have taken the plunge more than 50 times.

In fact, I happen to like really cold water, so I try to take a dip in one of the nearby lakes at least once a month.”

The advisor helped him get a job there, where he worked for 25 years. He presently works at Valbruna Stainless Steel and hopes to retire this July to spend more time golfing and bowling.

“The best part of it is that in the more than 50 years this event has been going on no one has ever gotten hurt or scraped up,” offered Garcia.

“I don’t know of anyone who even got sick. The Fort Wayne Fire Department scuba team always shows up to make sure that everything goes off safely. They bring an ambulance and have several members of the team in wet suits in the water and more nearby in a row boat.”

Winter warm-up recipes

One way to ensure you are getting the most nutrients from your vegetables is by putting them in a soup or stew. Here in the dead of winter we need to consume food that will give us as many antioxidants, prebiotics, vitamins and micronutrients as possible to help our immune system combat anything that comes our way.

Less meat — more veggies.

Here is a basic recipe from Forks over Knives for making your own vegetable stock.

We have talked before about saving all your veggie leftovers, tossing them in the freezer and then using them to make stock

— easy peasy, or you may use store bought.

Vegetable Stock Makes About 6 Cups 1 large onion, peeled 2 large carrots, peeled 2 celery stalks 8 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed 8 springs parsley ½ cup green lentils, rinsed Scrub the vegetables, chop roughly into 1-inch chunks. In a large pot, add onion, carrots, celery, garlic, parsley and cook over high heat for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water as needed to prevent sticking.

Add 2 quarts water and the lentils, bring to boil, lower to simmer, uncovered for 30 minutes. Strain and discard solids. Refrigerate up to one week or freeze.

You can use this versatile stock for various soups.

Save your leftover veggies and make vegetable soup, potato soup, squash soup, lentil chili or a host of others.

Best Lentil Soup Ingredients 1 cup yellow onion, chopped 1 cup celery stalks, chopped 1 cup carrots, chopped 2 cups kale, chopped 1 teaspoon rosemary or chopped fresh herbs: thyme, basil (whatever you like) 1 clove garlic, chopped 2 cups red lentils 6 cups vegetable broth (add more if you desire a thinner soup) 3 tablespoon water to water sauté Instructions 1. Water sauté chopped veggies on medium-high heat for 3-5 minutes.

2. Add chopped garlic, herbs, and kale and simmer for 3-5 more minutes.

3. Pour in lentils and vegetable stock.

4. Simmer for 25 minutes or more until lentils are tender.

Quick Three-Bean Soup The China Study Cookbook 3 cups plus 2 tablespoon vegetable stock 1 medium onion, diced

1 teaspoon black pepper 1 heaping teaspoon dried parsley 1 teaspoon oregano In large pot, sauté onion and garlic in 2 tablespoon vegetable broth over medium-high heat until onion is slightly transparent.

Add remaining ingredients.

Cover and cook on mediumlow for 30 minutes.

Snooze dog, never a problem Something curious is happening to me. I hope it’s not anything to be too concerned about. I’m not napping as much as ,1 $ I used to.

1876+(// For most %\ ',&. of my life, if :2/)6,( I was on the couch watching a TV show, I’d nod off within five minutes. But a couple of weeks back, I was awake through an entire Colts game. That particular game, even the Colts couldn’t say that.

Napping has never been a

problem. When I was a high school teacher, I actually fell asleep in class while proctoring a statewide exam. The kids were very polite. “I hope we didn’t disturb you yesterday, Mr. Wolfsie,” said one of my students. “We tried to cheat as quietly as we could.”

Up until recently, I could take a quick snooze while having dinner with friends, at red lights, while waiting for my wife to put on makeup, as the dog was relieving himself, at fast food drive-up windows, in check-out lines. Anywhere.

As a result of grabbing the occasional 40 winks, I have missed a few events that in retrospect I probably should have stayed awake for. Here are

the top three: 1. My 70th birthday party (I wish they had screamed “Surprise!” louder) 2. Paris 3. The end of my interview with Governor Evan Bayh Mary Ellen never quite understood the value of a nap.

Personally, I think women are afraid they’re going to miss something. Like a sale, or a beautiful sunset, or the plot of a movie. Men don’t care about stuff like this.

On the rare occasion that Mary Ellen has fallen asleep during the day, she would awaken with an apology and an explanation of her behavior.

“I don’t know what happened.

I must be coming down with

something!” I always had a different attitude when awakening from a short slumber: “Man, that was a great. I’m getting better and better at this all the time.”

My inability to nap recently came up during my last annual physical, but there was some confusion in the conversation.

“How are you sleeping?” asked Dr. Ross, a pretty standard inquiry by a primary care provider.

“It’s been rough,” I told him.

“Sometimes I’m awake for 8-10 hours in a row.”

“Ten hours?” he gasped. “We need to do some testing. How long has this been going on?”

“Several months.”

“Do you just toss and turn

in bed?”

“Well, I’m not in bed. That’s the problem. I’m out driving the car, watching the news, cooking.

Sometimes I’m in the garage operating heavy machinery.”

“This is very troubling, Dick.

So you don’t sleep all night?”

“No, I sleep great at night.

It’s all day that I can’t sleep.”

Dr. Ross was very helpful once I straightened out the misunderstanding. He said I had to accept that men experience changes in their bodily rhythms as they mature. “I want you to go home this afternoon and really think about that,” he said.

I told him I’d have to sleep on it. Which meant, of course, it would have to wait until that night.

In November, she joined her brother and sister-in-law, Dave and Trish Van Baalen, at an open house in Peru that celebrated 34 West Church — previously known as Holy Trinity Church — which had been restored with their assistance.

Her evenhanded attitude might lead one to think she hasn’t had her own challenges and struggles. But she simply sorts her troubles out with God. “My faith was most challenged when I learned I couldn’t have children. Not unlike most women, I had planned on marrying and having children. I never doubted it would happen.

I remember ending up in emergency surgery, not that long after a breakup in a relationship. I can remember the doctor telling me that children would not be possible. Initially I wasn’t sure who to be mad at. I was for sure angry at God. I have learned that God can handle my anger and I even think he has a sense of humor dealing with me.

“I make the same mistakes at times,” she continued. “Like getting frustrated with drivers who are texting. I can just hear God telling me that we already discussed that. But he still forgives me. That’s something I talk with people about all the time when they need to work on forgiving others.”

Her fun times include cheering for the Indianapolis Colts.

She’s been “a diehard fan since 1969.” Lucy, her rescue dog, is her constant companion.

Devoted to animals, Van Baalen recently posted on Facebook that the wind chill was negative five and people should protect their pets.

Through her life, she has attended different churches, as she’s also lived in different states. The pandemic has not left Van Baalen’s worship habits untouched.

Few readers may realize that during World War II, it was the United States Navy that literally saved Notre Dame University from going financially distressed or near shutting down.

Large numbers of prospective male and female students and civilians were either being drafted into or enlisting in military service. Fort Wayne played a role in saving Notre Dame as did many other area towns, men and women. I am most humbled and honored to have in my historical collection, a book that tells the story of the “September 1943” men who comprised “The Third Midshipmen’s Class at Notre Dame.”

Within this rare book, I turn the many pages that show me the photos of hundreds of men who came to Notre Dame to

train to be future Navy officers.

Most of the students already had college graduation and Naval experience behind them. We turn our attention to page 15 where I present to you one “Lt. H.H. Stahlhut USNR (United States Naval Reseerve),” then a 1943 Fort Wayne resident.

Lt. Stahlhut was not a student, but a member of the “Executive Dept.” and more specifically the “Dental Dept.” He had received his commission as Lt. on Aug. 26, 1942.

This writer has no other information on Lt. Stahlhut other than his 1943 photo and the fact that this Fort Wayne native took care of the dental needs of the Naval students at Notre Dame University.

Did Lt. Stahlhut return to Fort Wayne after the war. Did he have any family in Fort Wayne. Is he still alive and likely in his 90s.

Bluebirds normally arrive in northwestern Indiana around March or April. This year, the first bluebird sighted was at Mengerson Woods on December 28, 2021. Nesting occurs from March through August. In the past they were quite rare, but have made an incredible comeback due to thousands of bluebird nest boxes being installed across the country.

Only the female incubates the four to six eggs, which she maintains at a temperature of 98-100 F. Bluebirds may raise two and sometimes three broods per season. Pairs may build their second nests on top of the first nest, or they may nest in an

Bluebirds are generally monogamous, staying together throughout the breeding season, and may breed together for more than one season. However, some birds may switch mates during a breeding season to raise a second brood.

Males tend to defend territory edges while the females primarily defend the nest site.

Males may carry nest material to the nest, but they do not participate in the actual building.

Adult bluebirds tend to return to the same breeding territory year after year, but only 3-5 percent of young birds return to where they hatched.

Bluebirds can be drawn in with a small dish filled with mealworms.

Seventy percent of all bluebirds die before reaching their first birthday.

A bluebird can spot caterpillars and insects in tall grass more than 50 yards away.

Bluebirds feed on a wide variety of insects, including

crickets, grasshoppers, beetles and many others; also, spiders, earthworms, snails and, rarely, small lizards or tree frogs.

Females have duller plumage than males.

Bluebirds have no blue pigments in their feathers.

Instead, each feather barb absorbs all wavelengths of color except blue. Only the blue wavelength is reflected and scattered, resulting in their blue appearance.

Bluebirds consume about four grams of food per day, or about 12 percent of their body weight, equivalent to a 200-pound human eating 24 pounds of food each day.

Unpaired male bluebirds may sing up to 1,000 songs per hour, and average 400-500.

Bluebirds can fly at speeds up to 45 miles per hour.

Bluebirds raise their young in old or pre-existing nesting

If you make or purchase a bluebird house, make sure it has a round entrance hole exactly 1 1/2 inches in diameter. If the hole is too small, bluebirds won’t be able to enter the nest box. Volunteers offer free tax prep drop-off Free tax help is available to area residents through April 13, 2022. For residents with an income under $58,000 in 2021, IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers help residents file their taxes and claim available credits. United Way of Allen County partners with the Volunteer Center and Catholic Charities Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend to offer the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program in Allen, DeKalb, Noble and Steuben counties.

This free tax preparation service brings more than $3.2 million back into the local community in refunds and saves residents over $480,000 in preparation fees, keeping more money in the pockets of those who need it the most.

“At a time when prices seem to be going up on everything, it is nice to be able to continue to offer this free service to our community. This program provides an opportunity for residents to file their taxes for

free while saving every dollar possible, which makes the VITA program crucial to this community” said Tiffany Bailey, vice president of community impact at United Way of Allen County.

Salamonie Lake hosts eagle watches Afternoon eagle watches will be offered Saturday, Feb. 5, 12 and 19, at Salamonie Lake through DNR’s Upper Wabash Interpretive Services.

Participants must call and speak to UWIS staff to register and choose a date and afternoon time when they will meet at the Salamonie Lake Nature Center, 3691 S. New Holland Road, Andrews.

A call-in platform will be used for the audio guided caravan. Upon arrival, participants may visit restrooms in the Nature Center, then return to their vehicles. Participants, if possible, should have a cellphone to access

the call-in platform, but be mindful of Indiana state law concerning driving and handheld cellular devices.

If available, bring binoculars, cameras and spotting scopes. Shared visual aids will also be available on site.

Be sure to have plenty of fuel in your gas tank. All caravan trips will include a stop to view a nesting site, a stop to view a feeding area and will end near dark at a bald eagle roosting area near Mississinewa Lake.

There will be some walking on flat surfaces. Those who need accessible parking should request it during

registration. Participants will be able to warm up with hot food and drink items available for a freewill donation at the roost site through the Friends of Upper Wabash Interpretive Services.

For safety, Frances Slocum Road between State Road 124 and County Road 550 E in Miami County will be closed for this event.

Hoover Historical Center will ‘sweep’ you away Believe it or not.

There’s actually a museum for vacuum cleaners.

It’s located in North Canton, Ohio, where *5($7 the Hoover (6&$3(6 Company 7H[W $QG 3KRWRV manu%\ 52' .,1* factured electric suction sweepers between 1908 and 2008. Through the decades it was the most recognized name in floor care.

In fact, instead of saying they were going to sweep the floors, most people who had one, simply said they were going to “Hoover.”

Hoover didn’t invent the vacuum cleaner, but invested in James Murray Spangler’s 1807 cleaning device invention.

When he couldn’t get financing for his idea, Spangler went to William H. (Boss) Hoover, who immediately saw the genius in the instrument and agreed to manufacture it. On Aug. 8, 1908, the new Electric Suction Sweeper Company was incorporated with W. H. Hoover as president and treasurer and his eldest son, Herbert.

W. Hoover, as secretary and general manager. Spangler was an active partner and oversaw sweeper construction. The name was officially changed to the Hoover Company in 1922 with H. W. as president. The 100th anniversary of the first Hoover vacuum was celebrated in 2008.

Hoover’s first portable electric cleaner weighed 40 pounds and included a 25-pound Westinghouse motor. The attached dirt bag was lined with an in-

The Model O sold for $60 plus another $15 for the dusting tool attachments. Between August and December of 1908, 372 were sold. Following an ad in the Dec. 5, 1908, Saturday Evening Post, sales jumped to more than 2,000 units in 1909.

That early success prompted them to change the name to The Hoover Suction Sweeper Company the following year.

Local bus company celebrates 18 years in service American Heritage Trails is celebrating 18 years of service here in northeast Indiana.

On Jan. 14, 2004, American Heritage Trails purchased their first bus. Since then, they have purchased 27 different buses and transported over 1,062,828 passengers. Destinations have included 1,287 trips to Chicago; 1,047 to Battle Creek/Firekeep-

ers; Washington D.C. (551 trips); Cedar Point (446); and New York City (237).

Headquartered just north of Fort Wayne in LaOtto, American Heritage Trails has always been locally owned and operated.

Recently the tour division also celebrated their 50,000th tour reservation. Having their own tour division is unique in the

motorcoach world. A majority of bus companies depend solely on charter business.

Dorothy in the “Wizard of Oz” is known for “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home,” but my family has found there is a place like home for our mother, Georgia Grady, at Kingston Residence of Fort Wayne.

Georgia moved from her home of 60 years into Kingston Residence in May of 2018.

There are so many reasons why Kingston Residence of Fort Wayne has become home for her.

The one-bedroom apartment is perfect for recreating the living space and bedroom to look just like her home. The open views of fields remind her of when she was little, living on a farm. Birds flock to

feeders right outside her window, keeping her entertained.

Meals are served with variety and nutrition, like when she cooked for herself at home.

The best part of the eating experience is the bond that has been created between her table mates. They have become great friends with care and support for each other.

Approach #2 is to go out on the internet or library and read as much on the subject as you can. If you like to read and have a lot of time, this maybe the approach for you. Both these approaches limit you to not knowing the unknown.

‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ originated in 1939 in South Africa Robert John The first time the world heard of Brooklynborn Robert John was in 1958, when he was 12 years old.

Back then, $ %RRPHU %ODVW the singing 7R 7KH 3DVW youngster %\ 5$1'$/ was going & +,// by his real name: Bobby Pedrick, Jr. An appearance on TV’s American Bandstand — occasionally the ticket to stardom for a struggling unknown — showcased his “White Bucks and Saddle Shoes,” a catchy but forgettable Big Top Records ditty. It struggled nationally to a lowly No. 79 slot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Similar teen-oriented followups — “Pajama Party,” “Summer Nights” — sank without a trace.

Five years later, as the lead singer of doo-wopping Bobby and the Consoles, Pedrick recorded another adolescent-oriented 45, a silly piece of fluff called “My Jelly Bean” on the Diamond label.

With surf and hot rod records roaring up the 1963 singles

charts, doo-wop was in its death throes. “My Jelly Bean” earned some East Coast airplay but not enough to make it a national hit. Pedrick and his pals never earned a second invitation into Diamond’s recording studio.

But Pedrick proved tenacious and felt in his heart that his distinctive and powerful voice would prove to be his ticket to the top of the Billboard charts someday. Maybe he would even reach Number One? During the ‘60s, he drifted from label to label, leaving behind a few failed singles at each stop. Later in the decade, he changed his stage name to Robert John (John being his middle name). He then turned to songwriting for such established artists as Bobby Vinton and Lou Rawls.

John signed with Atlantic Records in 1971 and drew closer to making his lifelong dream a reality when he recorded “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” which rose to No. 3 on the Hot 100.

The song is one of those tunes that seems to have been around forever, with various renditions being released as “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and by its earlier title “Wimoweh.” The tune has actually been a worldwide

standard since 1939, when it had been created and first recorded as “Mbube” (Zulu for “lion”).

The song had been written in South Africa by a 30-year-old factory worker named Solomon Linda, who packed 78-rpm discs and swept the floors for the Gallo Record Company. On weekends, he performed with his vocal group, The Evening Birds. One particular crowd favorite was his “Mbube,” which incorporated a call-and-response pattern, well known to the Zulus and common in Black churches everywhere.

Solomon utilized an underlying chant and a meshing of male voices, with countertenor leader Linda yodeling and howling throughout.

Gallo had The Evening Birds record the tune. During the third taping, Solomon improvised the melody that would become familiar to audiences internationally.

“Mbube” sold 100,000 copies and made Linda a star, although he would die in poverty later, with $22 to his name. His contribution to music has lived on, though, through such groups as Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

As for Robert John? In 1979, he released his final hit, “Sad Eyes,” which rocketed all the way to No. 1

Salamonie Lake hosts succulent workshop Feb. 20 Salamonie Lake will host its “The Winter Doesn’t Have to Succ” workshop on Sunday, Feb. 20, from 2-3:30 p.m. at Salamonie Lake’s Nature Center, 3691 New Holland Road, Andrews.
