Horner found her calling at The League %\ /$85(1 =(8*1(5 6WDII :ULWHU For the last 33 years Donna Horner of Osceola has been helping seniors with vision problems continue to live fulfilling lives. It is her calling in life.

Horner began her career at ADEC in Bristol, where she worked for 24 years in the Chapter II Senior Blind

Services program. The year she started at ADEC was the year the agency launched the pilot program.

When ADEC decided to move away from Chapter II, the League for the Blind and Disabled in Fort Wayne expressed an interest in taking over the program, but only if Horner was involved. So she changed employers.

“It’s not something I dreamed

about as a child. I wanted to be a disc jockey,” she said in a phone interview. Horner is originally from Detroit, Mich., and after graduating from college had trouble finding a job. She found one working with developmentally disabled adults, but realized that was not her calling.

So with encouragement from a friend, she went back to school for her graduate degree.

ADEC was her first job after graduate school.

Horner is a rehabilitation teacher and oversees a large area ranging from Fort Wayne to South Bend. Typically, she works from her home in Osceola. “I’m a traveling teacher, “ she said.

When Horner talks about her job, it’s obvious she has a passion for it. She explained she teaches seniors with vi-

“Most have some level of vision,” she said of her clients.

“We do a lot with daily living skills. We’re very consumer driven. It’s up to the person and what they want. It really depends on the person.”

Along with assisting clients, she also facilitates four support groups where she talks about available technology for those with vision impairments, such as talking clocks, watches and the talking book program. “I never get bored,” she said.

She explained she loves working with the support groups because it’s nice to bring people together with similar issues. They realize they aren’t alone.

Horner explained each client has a different situation

based on what is causing their vision impairment. Glaucoma causes a different type of vision impairment than macular degeneration, so she may work with a client on using a magnifier. She is working with a client who is preparing to have a guide dog. Horner explained, before her client is approved for a guide dog, she needs to know how to use a cane and how to move around with traffic.

She’s also had calls from the University of Notre Dame asking her to assist a student, usually a foreign exchange student, who is visually impaired and did not have similar resources at home to assist them.

“I try to teach (my clients), ‘You have to be your own advocate.’”

She also likes to educate families about what their family member can do despite their impairment. “It’s about self dignity,” she said.

Celebrating contributions of those who care for others 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ '(% 3$77(5621 (GLWRU ,Q &KLHI Unsung community heroes and caregivers were honored April 19 at the 2022 Age of Excellence Awards Luncheon.

This was the 26th year for the event. Eight individuals and/or organizations were recognized, but there were two recognitions not on the program.

Becky Zaseck, past president of REAL Services, was recognized with the Circle of Corydon, presented by Sen. David Niezgodski on behalf of Gov. Eric Holcomb. The Circle of Corydon Award honors Hoosiers who have made remarkable contributions to the betterment of Indiana and its people, demonstrating through life and service qualities exemplified by the state’s greatest citizens. It was established in 2017 by Holcomb.

Zaseck was also honored

by U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski, who presented her with a Congressional Resolution that was made a part of the Congressional Record for the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Age of Excellence Awards were presented in eight different categories: • The Rebecca Zaseck Professional of the Year Award, presented to Vanessa Marbley, who has served for more 20 years at an assisted living facility in Granger, providing friendship, compassion and loving care to those she served.

• The Family Caregiver of the Year Award, presented to Sean Porter, who spent the last 10 years caring for his former wife, going above and beyond in her care over the years since she was diagnosed with dementia. He provides his former wife 24/7 care.

• The Business of the Year Award, presented to Primrose Retirement Community of Mishawaka. Despite challenges during COVID-19, the facility took its level of care very seriously and made an impact on each resident daily.

• The Wyatt Mick Volunteer Of The Year, given to Doris Baker. When a nutrition site almost closed due to lack of staffing, the 80-year-old stepped in to operate one of the sites. She made sure the people who relied on the hot meals and those who needed to socialize had a place to go.

The site would have closed from August 2021 until February 2022 if not for Baker.

• The Agency Serving Low-Income Populations Award went to the Boys and Girls Club of St. Joseph County. During COVID the staff ensured programs were running smoothly and safely with 23 after-school programs throughout St. Joseph County.

• The Change Agent of the Year, presented to Nancy Lute. For 10 years she has been dedicated to changing

She is a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, picking up extra routes on a regular basis when other volunteers cancel.

She doesn’t just drop off meals and rush away, she takes the time to get to know the individual and learn their life story, making them feel heard.

• The Sargent Shriver Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to Cynthia Davis.

She has been a staple in helping with the local, at-risk community of Michigan City.

She also serves on a variety of boards designed to assist low-income communities.

• The Les Fox Hoosier Lifetime Award, given to Ed Baer, who has spent his career and free time helping others.

Serving on the REAL Services board from 1984-2021, he was instrumental in the planning and development of the REAL Services main building. During his tenure, he helped lead the CHOICE program, along with other vital programs — seeing firsthand the number of clients served rise from hundreds to thousands.

The keynote speaker for the event was Anne Thompson, who began her broadcasting career at WNDU as a general assignment reporter from 1979-1983. She also became close friends with the McFadden family. She appears across all platforms of NBC News and MSNBC. She spoke about community, service and those acts of kindness done by individuals every day that are daily acts of love.

Kay Londergan is an avid gardener and artist whose Granger garden will be one of seven featured in this year’s “Arts in Bloom Garden Walk,” sponsored by the South Bend Art League. Proceeds from the garden walk, which will be held Wednesday, June 29, are used for children’s programming at the South Bend Museum of Art and children’s field trips to the museum.

Londergan enjoys watercolor, oil and pastel. She especially enjoys watercolor since it’s easy to transport.

“I feel like I’ve been an artist since I was a kid,” she said. Local sculptor Bob Kuntz, her uncle and godfather, took her to the painting room at St. Mary’s College. “I just wanted to be an artist from that point,” Londergan said.

She attended St. Mary’s and received her bachelor of arts in fine arts. She also met her husband, David, who attended Notre Dame.

The couple moved to the Boston area and it was Londergan’s mother-in-law who inspired her love of gardening. “She knew the names of all her plants, something I can’t proclaim; however, I would use many of her flowers as subjects to paint,” she said. “She gave me the first lessons in the garden.”

While living in Boston, Londergan didn’t do much gardening in her yard. It was when she returned to South Bend and her home had a much bigger yard that she became more interested in gardening.

“My husband and I are newly retired and as the weather continues to improve, we wonder why our days go so fast. We enjoy doing projects together and being outside. It’s a peaceful place to be.”

The yard is wooded mostly with cherry, oak, maple and sassafras trees. Londergan said she enjoys looking for new types of hosta and

“With COVID we did a lot out in the yard,” she said. The couple has also enjoyed the wildlife the garden attracts. They have had Northern Harrier Hawks nest in the woods behind their home, and deer have been known to wander through, as have a couple of ducks.

In addition to gardening more, Londergan also decided to get back to her art and started taking classes. “That’s how I met all the women I paint with,” she said.

Her aunt Ann Kuntz got her involved in the South Bend Art League, as the two would attend the monthly lunches. Londergan became a member and soon became involved in helping with the annual garden walk. She usually helps out in the hospitality center for the walk.

p.m. Wednesday, June 29. This year’s walk features seven gardens, including Londergan’s and her neighbors on both sides of her home. “They’ve been dear friends the entire time we’ve lived here,” she said. All three couples enjoy gardening and have been sharing plants and cuttings.

Londergan and her husband have two children, a son who is an engineer in Grand Rapids, Mich., and a daughter who works for the art museum at IU Bloomington.

They also share their home with Stella, a bull terrier.

A blessed event is about to take place with the birth of a baby girl on a chilly day of March 10, 1923. The baby girl is given the name, Delores Agnes Eble.

What has been determined is that Delores “got her taste for the cinema as an extra in (the 1934 movie) ‘It Happened One Night’ at age 11.”

Readers may remember this movie starred Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert and a very minor unaccredited role of Delores. We can learn that “she is seen briefly in the film, walking in front of Claudette Colbert, who is on her way to take a shower.” Appearing in this movie piqued her interest in becoming an actress.

As the years passed, Delores entered her adult years and into the world of movies, TV and songwriting. One of her major movie roles was in “Glen or Glenda.” She also appeared in numerous TV roles (unaccredited), one being “The Adventures of Superman,” where she stood

in the near background of a beauty salon scene.

Delores eventually ended up in New York City, where she “had a very successful career there as a songwriter. Elvis Presley recorded a number of her songs written for his films.”

Two of the most famous songs that she wrote or co-wrote were “Rock-A-Hula-Baby” and “Do the Clam” for the movie “Blue Hawaii” (1961).

An album, “Love Letters from Elvis” (1971) included the song “Cindy, Cindy.” Many of Delores’ songs can be found in Elvis movies such as “Kid Galahad,” “Fun in Acapulco,” “It Happened at the World’s Fair,” “Kissin’ Cousins,” “Roustabout,” “Girl Happy,” “Spinout,” “Easy Come, Easy Go” and “Change of Habit.”

Delores Agnes Eble Fuller was married to Donald Kenneth Fuller on June 25, 1941, until 1955 when they divorced. They

'(/25(6 (%/( ³ 6KRZQ LV 'HORUHV LQ KHU HDUO\ DFWLQJ \HDUV had a son and daughter. She married Philip Chamberlin in 1988, until she died on May 9, 2011, in Las Vegas. Delores and family members are buried in Palm Memorial Park Cemetery in Las Vegas. How Delores and the family ended up in Las Vegas is not known. She was once a model for the old “Queen for a Day” show.

People rationalize that they are too young or don’t have enough money to justify the time and expense of creating a plan.

However, estate planning is for everyone, regardless of age or worth. Here are a few reasons to stop procrastinating.

1. Loss of capacity. What if you become incompetent and unable to manage your own affairs? Without the proper plan, the court will select the person to manage your affairs. With the proper plan, you select that person.

2. Keeping assets in the family. Without a plan, your child’s spouse may end up with your money if your child passes away prematurely. If your child divorces, half of your assets could go to the spouse. With a plan, you can set up a trust that ensures your assets will stay in your family.

3. Dying without a will. Who will inherit your assets? Without the proper plan, your assets pass to your heirs according to Indiana’s intestacy law. Family members will receive your assets without the benefit of your direction. With the proper plan, you decide who gets your assets, and when and how they receive them.

4. Blended families. What if your family is blended? Without the proper plan, children from a prior marriage may not be treated as you would wish. With the proper plan, you determine what goes to your children from a prior marriage.

5. Children with special needs. Without the proper plan, a child with special needs risks being disqualified from receiving Medicaid or SSI benefits. With proper planning you can set up a Special Needs Trust that will allow the child to remain eligible for government benefits while using the trust to pay for noncovered expenses.

No longer do you have to “enter” the channel on ,1 $ the device.

Of course, most times you

will be asked to repeat yourself, because the high-tech gadget failed to understand you. As Mary Ellen noted, quite aptly, “I might as well ask you to switch channels, Dick. You can’t hear me half the time, either.”

And why are functions only on the remote, and not on the giant TV itself? Why jam all those buttons onto something the size of a stapler? They could have put them on the set, as well. Absentminded as I am, I have never lost a TV screen … and then found it in my sock drawer.

I try to look on the bright side. If I didn’t have to tear my

couch apart at least twice a month and dive into the dark side beneath those cushions to look for the remote, I wouldn’t have $235.89 worth of change in a cookie jar and I’d still be wondering what happened to my wedding ring, my extra set of keys and 17 ballpoint pens.

No one can argue that a remote control is third only to movable type and the Squatty Potty for the world’s greatest inventions. I became so paranoid about losing the remote that I wrapped a long piece of dental floss around it and then tied the line to the leg of the coffee table. I never lost the

remote … and I remembered to floss 45 percent more often.

And only once did I get caught on the floss and sprain my ankle.

One company may have solved the disappearing remote problem. They will soon introduce a new flat-screen television that obeys commands based on hand and body movements. This technology is called gesture recognition. (It’s a concept we are all familiar with when we cut someone off on I-465.)

Thompson still enjoys being big voice guy %\ /2,6 720$6=(:6., 6WDII :ULWHU There are many things that make attending a South Bend Cubs game at Four Winds Field memorable. Announcer Jon Thompson is hoping he plays a part in that fan experience.

“I love doing PA work,” Thompson said, “and being small part of the game I love. Working for a great organization like the South Bend Cubs - one that cares and shows it every day, being involved in the community and making a commitment to its players and fans.”

Thompson is well-known to many in the South Bend area as the voice behind the ‘JT in the Morning’ show on WSBT. He retired in 2018 after 42 years in front of the microphone.

His travels to the announcer’s booth in South Bend has taken Thompson from Massachusetts to New Hampshire and back to Massachusetts. Jobs in Colorado and Pennsylvania followed, with the final stop in South Bend.

One of the many broadcasters who made an impact on Thomp-

son was Dave Maynard, who had a show on WBZ radio in Boston.

This was in the era in which AM radio shows had personality, filled with music, conversation, contests and fun, Thompson recalled.

“Dave was someone who could make the listener feel as though he were speaking only to you, really the essence of personality radio,” he said. “I actually joined him a few times in his studio, and it was a thrill. I remember thinking, ‘This sounds like fun.

I’d like to try that.’ I’m thankful that WSBT allowed me to do it that way.”

Chance played a role in bringing Thompson to Four Winds Field.

“Several years ago, I was emceeing an event for the Salvation Army and the owner of the South Bend Cubs, Andrew Berlin, happened to be there. He introduced himself and said the team was looking for a new PA announcer. That’s how it began, and I’ve been there ever since.”

Thompson has other announcing gigs to keep him busy. He is the voice of the Notre Dame

Marching Band and has announced games for the university’s basketball, baseball and softball teams.

Thompson became a baseball umpire, inspired by the influence of his father and by his own time playing baseball in his youth. He has officiated little league, high school and college games and even filled in for games at Four Winds Field.

But it is the announcer’s booth that still draws him to be part of the sport. His experience and his passion for the game bodes well when he calls the action at the South Bend Cubs games.

The key to being a good announcer is preparation and professionalism, he said.

“Once the preparation is complete, the performance is the easy - and fun - part,” he said.

“Having the feeling that you’re helping the fans, your guests at the ballpark, enjoy their South Bend Cubs’ experience, along with creating lasting memories. It’s another example of how I can use the gift of my voice in a productive way in one of my favorite sports.”

The story behind the quilt is inspiring. It was handmade by Ellen and Vera Miller of Goshen.

Ellen, who tragically lost her husband in a bicycle accident, looks for ways to stay busy and contribute to others. When she heard about Hamilton Grove’s 100th birthday from Carlos Romero, vice president of operations, she volunteered to make a commemorative quilt for the event.

A grandmother of seven and an active member of her Amish community, Ellen sketched the design, and then hand-quilted each piece. She enlisted the help of her niece, Vera, to cut the pieces and sew them together.

The two women did not stop with the commemorative quilt.

They made a second quilt, in the Star Log Cabin design, to give away as part of a 100th birthday fundraiser for Hamilton Grove.

Both quilts are on display in the main lobby at The Point at Hamilton Grove.

The winner of the quilt drawing will be announced at the 100th Birthday Women of Courage Gala on March 10, 2023. One need not be present to win.

Dunes Summer Theatre issues latest events

The Dunes Summer Theatre is launching the 2022 season with “Next to Normal,” a dramatic pop rock musical exploring life with mental illness. The production opened on May 27 and runs through Sunday, June 12. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. CT and Sundays at 2 p.m. CT at the theatre, 288 Shady Oak Dr., in Michiana Shores.

The cast includes Chicago actors Jodi Gage, as Diana; Max DeTonge (cast member for the Dunes 2019 production of Working), as Dan; Peter Sielstra, as Henry; and Ben Harmon, as Dr. Madden/Dr. Fine. Valparaiso singer and musician Derek DeRoo plays Gabe, and Mia Goodman, a senior at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, plays Natalie.

Besides his duties as Artistic Director, Scott is a board member of Dunes Arts Foundation, a nonprofit organization that manages Dunes Summer Theatre.

“We believe the arts are a vital part of the community’s health and wellness,” Scott said.

For me, I will continue to experiment with all my varieties and gain more knowledge about sprouting and consume them on a regular basis for both taste and health.

While tending to the sprouts is minimal work, you do need to be vigilant with the rinsing and storage to avoid spoiling. When in doubt, throw them out, which is why in the past I only purchased them from the farmer’s market and inquired when they were harvested. Happy sprouting.

Sprouts are very young plants harvested a few days after germination and renowned for their health benefits. They improve digestive health, plus the insoluble fiber acts as a prebiotic to feed the good bacteria in your gut. Remember, 80% of your immune system is in the gut, so we want to feed it properly.

I’ve learned a lot from “The Sprout Book” by Doug Evans. You can deep dive into sprouting and learn which seeds have which minerals or micronutrients or you can skim the surface so you can get to growing sprouts; which is what I did. I purchased two wide-mouth quart jars that invert at maybe a 45-degree angle on a tray and have a microscreen cover for air, rinsing and draining.

Following the information in the book, I purchased organic seeds designed for sprouting. I chose a variety of 10 different vegetables/ beans plus two that were mixed, one a salad mix and the other a bean mix.

Starting with the salad mix in one jar and the bean mix in the other jar, I soaked them for eight hours and then rinsed them three times a day the following day with filtered water. Rinse the salad mix three times a day for about four days and the beans once a day for about six days. After that, you

Sally Field claims ‘It was just drivel!’

“I was in heaven, learning as much as I could learn.

I loved, loved, loved every minute of it,” Sally %\ 5$1'$/ Field once & +,// enthused to a writer from “O, The Oprah Magazine.” High praise for Field’s time spent as “The Flying Nun?” Actually, no.

Field was waxing nostalgic about her first television series, “Gidget,” a 1965 show on ABC-TV based on the Sandra Dee movie of the same name.

In 1959, Gidget had kicked off the beach party/surfing film craze of the early 1960s.

Field’s remembrance of her “Flying Nun” years was quite different. She had landed the Gidget role right out of Birmingham High School in the Los Angeles suburb of Van Nuys, shortly after she was spotted by a casting agent at an acting workshop. When “Gidget” folded after a year of mediocre ratings, Field was devastated.

She was then offered the lead role in another ABC-TV

series, this time as a Puerto Rico-based Catholic sister who could soar through the air. “The Flying Nun” was based on Tere Rios’s 1965 book, “The Fifteenth Pelican.”

Field rejected the role, later explaining, “The show just made no sense to me. It was just drivel! There wasn’t any piece of it that had human behavior in it.”

Her stepfather was a stuntman/actor named Jock Mahoney, who Field found intimidating and controlling. When Mahoney warned her, “If you don’t take this part, you may never work again,” Field capitulated and signed to play the cartoonish sister. When she later requested more depth to the nun scripts, Field was told, “(People) want to know what they’re going to see before they see it. They don’t want to be touched. They don’t want to be surprised. They don’t want to think.”

The series ran for three years, 1967-1970, for a total of 82 episodes. It quickly became a ratings winner, but as the weekly stories unfolded, viewership dropped steadily. By the third year, the show was on

life support.

In the meantime, Field had married her first husband, Steve Craig, and was pregnant during the last season’s filming. “You can only imagine what a pregnant flying nun looked like,” she said. “I was a walking sight gag.” The show’s producers used props and scenery to block the view of Field’s body below the chest.

But eventually Field came to realize that the time she spent on “The Flying Nun” did, to her surprise, have an actual upside. “Something in me started to take care of myself in a way I hadn’t been able to before,” she said later. “I started to change and heal. I grew up and moved out of the fog. And ultimately, the experience of being on the series gave me tremendous strength. It made me want to be a real actor, no matter what.”

She certainly achieved that goal. In her superlative movie career, Field carried home an armful of Tinseltown trophies, including two Academy Awards for Best Actress for “Norma Rae” and “Places in the Heart.”

The History Museum Offers Tour of City Cemetery Grave sites of individuals who have been significant in South Bend history will be visited during a guided tour of City Cemetery, presented at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, by The History Museum.

Morgan serves greater purpose with Marian %\ /2,6 720$6=(:6., 6WDII :ULWHU At Marian High School, Sister Marie Morgan strives to give her students a strong foundation in faith. Born and raised in West Lafayette, Morgan devotes her life to the church and her faith, living as a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration at their convent in Mishawaka.

Morgan serves as the Theology Department Chair for the school.

She joined the academic staff in 2004, teaching theology and doling out a little life lessons along the way. One lesson she hopes every student remembers is that prayers do not necessarily have to follow a script.

“Talk to God as a real person,”

Morgan said.

Raised a Catholic, Morgan attended Catholic schools through high school, graduating from Lafayette Central Catholic High School with 70 members of the senior class. Her next stop on the academic journey was Indiana University. There, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in General Studies with an emphasis on education.

An opportunity arose that took her to Rome, Italy, for five years to study at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Theology and a Master of Arts in Spiritual Theology. Her academic journey is not over, however; she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in psychology.

Morgan sees this as a way to

further help her students deal with the challenges of the secular world and their faith journeys that lie ahead. She has observed the need for this training because of the mental health issues that so many face.

The Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration is a ministry that focuses on health care and education. The sisters that live in the convent on Dragoon Trail maintain 24 hour, seven day a week access to the Eucharist.

The order was established in the United States, in Lafayette, in 1875. It was originally established in 1860 in Germany.

Morgan took her final vows to enter the order in 1999. She remembers visiting the Lafayette convent and attending retreats as a high schooler. It was then

that she was moved to look toward possibly joining the order.

When she approaches the subject of theology, Morgan said she witnessed how a strong emphasis on scripture could negatively impact someone and make them turn away from their faith.

“It’s OK to teach the faith,” Morgan explained, “but you must meet the students where they are at, respect them and show them joy. It needs to be taught so it’s not stifling.”

The one misconception Morgan

wishes she could change when it comes to how she is viewed in public is the idea that she is judging people. Sometimes, it may be meant as a joke, but Morgan is aware how people react to her.

Being religious, she said, means being a witness to something more than simply doing good works. It means that people see how she acts and how she dresses. What she wants them to know, however, is that they are loved.

Funeral directors believe that the purpose of the funeral is to honor the person who has died while attending to the needs of those left behind. In short, caring for the dead as well as the living.

Funeral directors serve best when told specific needs and desires. They will help arrange for an appropriate tribute taking into account religious preferences, emotional needs and finances.

Pre-plan or pre-fund (also called pre-financing) are used interchangeably but they are quite different. Pre-planning can be as simple as letting family or the funeral director know what to do upon the loved one’s death.

This can be done verbally, but it is best to do it formally by writing down the wishes. Every funeral home has a document that is for this specific purpose.

It may be called a Funeral Planning Handbook. It is a pamphlet that can be filled out and kept with all other important papers and/or given to the preferred funeral home for safekeeping until needed.

Now, pre-funding (or prefinancing) is pre-planning and choosing to pay for funeral goods and services in advance. This can

be done by making payments or by paying in one lump sum.

Both options have advantages and disadvantages. The biggest advantage in pre-funding is that it can relieve the family burden of making these decisions at a difficult time, but also can lockin to today’s funeral prices, and have it guaranteed by law.

Considering that casket prices

alone increased 3-5 percent each year, this can add up to quite the savings.

If advance planning is done with an experienced attorney in the field of Medicaid law, the assets of the first spouse to die can be placed in a special type of trust, which has sometimes been referred to as a “Safe Harbor Trust.” The technical term is an Irrevocable Testamentary Special Needs Trust. Assets passing to provide for the care of the surviving

spouse in this way can be fully protected from nursing home spend-downs. They are available for care and needs during the lifetime of the surviving spouse, and they may also be better protected from death taxes and probate fees when they pass to the children at the time the surviving spouse passes away.

Now, 18 years later, the memory of Kelsey lives on, even through people who never met her, including some who weren’t yet born when she died. They have been active in the Indiana Donor Network, which helps facilitate organ, tissue and eye donation and transplants across the country. They are also active with the organization’s annual “Gift of Life Celebration,” at which Mikel has played an integral role as its emcee for several years.

“August 21 is a day that I’ve always allowed myself to be in a bad mood,” Mikel said, referring to the anniversary of his daughter’s death. “Last year on August 21, my daughter, Mattie, gave birth to our first grandchild. It has allowed me to redefine that day.”

Mikel said one of his wife’s biggest fears was people wouldn’t remember Kelsey. Through their efforts and the support of their community, it is assured that her memory will continue to live on.

Davis pressured to record ‘The Candy Man’ Sammy Davis Jr.

“It’s horrible. It’s white bread, it’s ‘cute-ums.’”

Sammy Davis Jr., couldn’t imagine singing lyrics that included such cloying $ %RRPHU %ODVW phrases 7R 7KH 3DVW as “groovy %\ 5$1'$/ lemon pies.” & +,// But Davis was being pressured to record “The Candy Man” by both his manager and Mike Curb, the 26-year-old hotshot president of MGM Records.

Curb was convinced the song had “hit” written all over it — but only if done by Davis. Before he approached the legendary vocalist, Curb recruited his

16-member recording group, the Mike Curb Congregation, to tape a childlike background for “The Candy Man.” Now if only Davis could be convinced to lay down a vocal track …

As a member of the legendary Rat Pack, Davis had earned celebrity by performing for sophisticated adult audiences. Was he willing to risk his reputation now by recording a featherweight kiddie ditty?

Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was the classic 1971 movie, based on the 1964 book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by children’s writer Roald Dahl. In Dahl’s novel, the main character is Charlie Bucket, who, along with four other juveniles, visits a candy factory owned by the eccentric chocolatier, Willie Wonka, played to perfection by Gene Wilder.

ners Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse had created the music for the film’s soundtrack. The first tune heard is “The Candy Man.” Sung by actor Aubrey Woods as the neighborhood candy store owner named Bill, the shopkeeper enthusiastically extols the magical properties of Wonka’s seductive sweets: “Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew “Cover it with chocolate and a miracle or two?

“The Candy Man, oh, the Candy Man can “The Candy Man can ‘cause he mixes it with love “And makes the world taste good.”

Woods did a serviceable job on the tune, but Newley hated the rather stiff rendition and felt that Woods’ version could easily doom a potential hit single.

Newley decided to record his own interpretation, but Mike Curb

got the jump on him.

Eventually, Davis capitulated, still fearing this could become a regrettable decision. Focused on a forthcoming trip to Vietnam to entertain the troops, he hurried through “The Candy Man” in two takes. When he listened to the playback in the recording studio, Davis moaned, “This record is going straight into the toilet, and it may just pull my whole career down with it.”

To his amazement (but not Curb’s), the single caught the nation’s ear when music fans of all ages embraced the joy Davis offered. “The Candy Man” shot to No. 1 on Billboard’s chart and even earned a Grammy nomination.

In time, the 45 topped playlists worldwide. “There are lots of regional hits, but rarely does a record become an international hit,” Davis explained later, probably with a smile and perhaps

Symphony Under The Stars The South Bend Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Grammy-nominated Music Director Alastair Willis, returns to Four Winds Field in downtown South Bend at 8 p.m. Friday, June 17, with “Symphony Under the Stars: American Anthems.”

This family-friendly concert features a variety of patriotic numbers and tributes to the armed forces as well as popular songs from Broadway and film.

The energetic performance concludes with fireworks to end the evening with a bang.

“Having the South Bend Symphony Orchestra perform here last year was a total success,” said South Bend Cubs President Joe Hart. “The feedback was so positive, and fans wanted us to host the symphony again, so we’re excited to be partnering with them in 2022.”

Willis added, “To perform outdoors, reach and embrace more people with the power of live music is a thrilling prospect. Thanks to the support of the Shein Trust for making this concert happen – and I can’t wait.”

Upbeat fanfares and marches, stirring vocal solos and a salute to those who have served our country will create an evening for all to remember.
