Fales finds new position challenging %\ /2,6 720$6=(:6., )HDWXUH :ULWHU It’s challenging to be the third person named to head an agency with a 56-year history serving the area’s senior population and their caregivers. That is the position that Karla Fales finds herself in.

Fales was named the president and chief executive officer for REAL Services on March 7. A life-long resident of Michigan, she brings a fresh look at how to continue the level of service her agency provides and how it can continue to innovate and navigate changing times.

As she found out more about the position, Fales said it seemed as if she was writing her own job description.

Taking on the role at REAL

Services “brought all of my areas of background together,” she said.

Although at first hesitant about uprooting her husband and moving away from her children and her three grandsons, Fales said after meeting the board of directors and the staff she felt more confident.

She applied and is now the first person not already associated with the agency to be hired to run it.

Since taking on that role, Fales said the experience has been a combination of the things she expected about her position and things she did not expect.

“Every organization has challenges,” she said.

Fales earned her Master of Business Administration from Western Governor’s University, and her Bachelor of Science in Management and Organizational Development from Spring Arbor University, Spring Arbor, Mich.

Her most recent position was the 13-year CEO of CareWell Services Southwest, which served multiple counties in Michigan, much like REAL Services does in Indiana. She was also a manager at the Office of Senior Services, director of planning and project development

at Burnham Brook Center, and the director of grants and project development at Community Action Agency of South Central Michigan.

Three tasks await Fales.

The first is to modernize the agency’s approach to its employment. It needs to be competitive, and employees should “feel that it’s a great place to work,” she said.

Second, Fales wants to ensure the agency is equipped to handle changes that come from changing state regulations and requirements, as well as changing needs of the

older community.

Finally, she wants to see the agency continue to deliver high standards of service for the programs it operates that benefit the senior population. It also means being innovative and forward thinking to provide needed services that not addressed.

“If you just do the program, you are not going to hit all the marks,” Fales explained. “We are tasked with determining the needs of the community and coming up with a plan to meet these.”

Summer history at the History Museum The History Museum, 808 W. Washington St., South Bend, offers a variety of programs and tours.

What started in 1941 as the 12.5-acre country home of Kay and Walter Boydston is now the 105-acre Fernwood Botanical Garden so many have come to know and love. Tucked away in Niles, Mich., Fernwood has grown over the years to expand and preserve a variety of natural and cultivated outdoor spaces, complemented by the addition of new engaging and educational indoor spaces.

Michelle McCoskey, Fernwood Botanical Garden’s director of education, explores the past, present and future of Fernwood and talks about what makes this botanical garden so special.

The program would not exist if not for volunteers who serve as leaders to a variety of clubs and projects.

Jim Kowalski is one of these volunteers. He has been active in 4-H for three decades, starting out as a parent with children in 4-H, and now as a volunteer. He is 76.

“Younger adults often don’t have the time to volunteer,” Kowalski said. “Someone has to do it.”

Kowalski is the Centre Township coordinator of the 4-H program. He also oversees the gardening component of 4-H and assists as the financial co-supervisor.

Older people like himself, Kowalski said, bring experience and insight. It is also a chance to pay back.

“When I was young, I had plenty of hands up,” Kowalski said. “That myth of self-made people — there is no one who is completely self-made.”

Volunteers are essential to the program, agreed Brittni Gendron, St. Joseph County extension director. In fact, Gendron said the program could not function without adults to coordinate the many clubs and projects, help with the 4-H arm of the St. Joseph County 4-H fair and take on any number of tasks necessary for the program — and local youth — to flourish.

“They are responsible for bringing this program to life,” Gendron said.

While agriculture projects are most often associated with 4-H, most projects volunteers help with are

in the community,” she said.

Volunteers should also have a knowledge base in the 4-H program they are most interested in helping with, Gendron and Kowalski said.

“They have to know something,” he said.

For example, Kowalski said he has been gardening since he was 9 years old.

That makes serving as the gardening project supervisor

a good fit for him.

“People have particular talents,” Kowalski said, referring to what volunteers can bring to the program. If you do something you enjoy, it’s not work.”

She estimates 85% of the clubs and projects offered in 4-H are not directly related to agriculture, although that focus is still an important part of 4-H. “4-H is for everyone,” Gendron said.

The 4-H program operates on an annual schedule. Youth register once a year, usually in the summer, and commit to a project that is showcased at the county 4-H fair the next year. In between are many hours of work to bring that project to completion, whether it is raising an animal or creating a work of art. Adults guide 4-H participants in their project, lending advice and support as the youth learn and grow.

Signing up to volunteer is a process that includes an application, a reference check and an interview. Most of all, the organization is looking for people “who have a passion for helping youth

Thanking active duty and military veterans for their service is good to do. For Chuck Damp and the Indiana Patriot Guard Riders it is only a small step in honoring those who served. They are prepared to do more to honor and respect those who were called to serve.

The Indiana Patriot Guard Riders is an organization whose motto is “We stand for those who stand for us.” The organization was incorporated in October 2006 in Indiana as a nonprofit.

“The Indiana Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse group of citizens from across the State of Indiana and we have one thing in common, an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for Americas freedom and security,” Damp said.

Damp has been a member since 2010. He was introduced to the organization through another member and said he “instantly” signed up. He is currently an assistant senior ride captain for this region and serves the organization on the board of directors.

The state organization oversees the missions. The state is divided into eight regions.

St. Joseph County is in the North Central region, which also includes LaPorte, Stark, Marshall, Fulton, Pulaski, Cass, Miami, Carrol, Howard, Clinton and Tipton counties.

Damp said the main mission of the Patriot Guard is to attend the funeral services of fallen military and first responders on the invitation of the family. Damp and the other riders attended more than 360 funerals in 2021.

Other missions include standing flag lines for military arriving home, escorting the bodies or cremains of fallen military to their final resting place and sending care packages to troops overseas.

Damp said the state organization completed 500 missions last year. There is also a national organization, which was founded in 2005.

The organization has also been asked to welcome veterans taking part in Honor Flights, a program that takes veterans to Washington, D.C., when the group arrives back

Another example of a mission found on the organization’s calendar is escorting the remains of a veteran from state line to state line as the veteran crosses the country to his final resting place in another state.

The Indiana Patriot Guard is open to anyone who wants to honor America’s heroes.

Participants don’t have to be veterans and although many member ride motorcycles, that is not a requirement.

Damp said there are no dues required and no meetings to attend.

“All money that comes to us is deposited in our account,” Damp said. “No IPGR member receives a dime. We are all volunteers.”

The city became enrolled in the AARP age-friendly network of communities in October 2021. This enrollment demonstrates South Bend’s commitment to assessing and improving the city’s friendliness to residents and visitors of all ages.

Some of the things I buy are military items, old toys, advertising items, coins, comics, sports cards and jewelry.

Toys from the 1980s and ‘90s are also selling well, especially action figures and gaming systems.

I have always enjoyed antiques and have a deep appreciation for history. I go to several auctions each week, which helps me stay current with what people are buying

and how much items are selling for. I also subscribe to many research sites. I am able to find the market value for almost any item you may have.

I have been in business for almost 15 years. I believe in treating people fairly. Because of this, a big part of my business comes from referrals or repeat clients. Often when people call me to look at their collections or estates, they are pleasantly surprised to learn that items they considered worthless are actually very valuable.

A life lesson in paddling %\ &$66,'< :+,7( 6WDII :ULWHU Ted Beatty would probably spend all his time on the water if he could. Learning to paddle from a young age, Beatty reminisced about being out on the water with his family in canoes on trips in Pennsylvania and Maine.

Though this fire slowly fizzled out, it was reignited in the 1990s in Pittsburgh, where he was introduced to a group that would go kayaking on the river. When Beatty moved to South Bend in 2000, he realized the city was nowhere near any forests, mountains or oceans, but there was water all over the place.

“I ran into a couple people around 2004-05 who were into kayak racing, and that’s when I really got hooked more seri-

ously and got into the recreational scene,” stated Beatty.

While Beatty spends a great deal of time paddling, he also instructs others how to do the same. Giving paddling lessons from time to time at St. Patrick’s Park, Beatty enjoys the chance to share his knowledge and get others excited about paddling.

“Teaching is always fun because people rarely see the river as something other than what you see under a bridge or drive past. It’s nice to get them on the water and connect them with their surroundings,” explained Beatty.

While there’s so much to love about paddling, Beatty said what he loves most is the escape and relaxation that comes with being out on the water. “I was out Tuesday [June 14] before work, in

Fond memories of early mornings and late nights certainly come with the territory, but for Beatty, one specific memory stands out most. “Going out in the winter, in the dark of the morning before the sun comes up and there’s a thin layer of ice on the river and it’s just this magical moment that is right there, close to us, but most of us never get a chance to experience.

On the flip side of things, Beatty also loves participating in paddling events in South Bend, as he has over the past decade, seeing upwards of 50-plus people on the water at the same time, all working towards the same thing: “Seeing people enjoying

Crafters and car enthusiasts wanted for Hamilton Grove’s 100th Birthday Festival Hamilton Grove in New Carlisle is seeking crafters and car enthusiasts for its 100th Birthday Festival Sunday, Aug. 21, on the campus.

An artisan craft market and a vintage car show will be part of the festival, along with an outdoor worship service, live music, food vendors, games, tours and special presentations. The fun begins at 11 a.m. with worship, followed by the festival opening at noon.

Car enthusiasts are invited to show off their vintage or classic cars at the festival.

Historic Motor Row District Chicago’s Historic Motor Row District from 1905-1936 will be presented from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Wednesday, July 20, as part of the Studebaker Museum Speaker Series, held in Wiekamp Auditorium on the campus of Bethel University.

The district is home to the largest intact early “motor colony” in the United States.

Primarily located on South Michigan Avenue, it was desig-

nated as a Chicago Landmark Dec. 13, 2000, and added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on Nov. 18, 2002.

At its peak, as many as 116 makes of automobiles were sold and repaired on Motor Row. The names of the early auto companies — such as Ford, Buick, Hudson, Cadillac, Locomobile, Marmon and Premier — are still visible today on the building’s brick and terra cotta facades.

Learn about the early development of the American automobile industry, the top flight architects who designed the elaborate automobile showrooms on Motor Row, several of the 116 automobile companies located there and the automobiles that you would find for sale in those showrooms.

Side salads increase vegetable intake

In my house we have several go-to side salads that increase our eating of raw vegetables, and I am always scoping out recipes to add to the variety.

I came across a recipe for a Southern broccoli salad in our local paper and decided that with a few modifications I could make a vegan version — and am I ever glad I did.

It was delicious, and I have made it twice in eight days.

In addition, I am serving it to about 60 people this weekend, and even though the recipe calls for crisp bacon and diced cheddar cheese, I have decided to serve it totally vegan because it is simply awesome without the added ingredients. (Said no bacon

lover — ever).

In the quest to eat one pound of cooked veggies and one pound of raw veggies each day, this salad is a total winner. Eating raw vegetables may improve your access to many vitamins, such as water-soluble vitamin C and many of the B vitamins. Heating can kill many enzymes within these plants that may be beneficial for digestion as well, so in the goal of just eating more vegetables, include both raw and cooked, but not overcooked. It’s always about the gut biome.

Southern Broccoli Salad – revised: 3 stalks of raw broccoli (typically it is sold bundled in 3 stalks) ½ cup Craisins (dried cranberries) ½ cup quartered cherry or thumb tomatoes ½ cup rough chopped roasted pecans (I have used raw pecans, now I throw them in a nonstick pan and toast them up and that adds a lovely roast nut flavor that enhances the salad). Seeds could also be added. ¾ cup vegan mayonnaise

(I used Follow Your Heart Vegenaise) 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon sugar (I used cane sugar) Pinch of kosher salt Pinch of pepper Omitted from original recipe: 6 pieces crispy bacon and 4 ounces of diced/cubed cheddar cheese.

Directions: Other than toasting the pecans and the dressing, this is an everybody-in-the-pool recipe.

You will only be using the floret portion of the broccoli cut into bite-sized pieces.

Then add quartered tomatoes, cranberries, pecans and pinch of salt and pepper.

For the dressing, mix vegan mayo, apple cider vinegar and sugar. The vegan mayo is a little thinner than traditional mayo and for this salad, that works perfectly to help bring out the flavor of all the other ingredients. Add to salad and mix. You could try plain yogurt if you would rather.

You could eat this right away, but letting it sit in the fridge for a couple of hours helps the vinegar disperse

Cheap thrills from the dollar stores

The dollar store as we knew it is gone.

Oh, it’s still there. I can see the helium balloons from the street — hugging ,1 $ the ceiling, 1876+(// beckoning %\ ',&. me to enter. :2/)6,( But don’t you fall for it. It’s not a dollar store anymore, it’s the Dollar and a Quarter Store, regardless of the store name. One chain considered the name 2 BELOW. That would give them the option of two more price increases without hav-

ing to buy another new sign.

I am addicted to all dollar stores. But now with this price increase, maybe it’s time to break my habit. Years ago, when pay phones went from 10 cents to a quarter, that was the last phone booth I ever walked into, except to check the little coin return to see if anyone had left any change in it.

Let me pause here while younger readers google what a phone booth is. By the way, for older folks, just so you know, the five-and-dime store has also raised their prices.

Several weeks ago, I was in a dollar store in my neighborhood, unaware this seismic shift in my budget was about to occur. I waited for the

cashier to ring up my purchases, though I thought I knew exactly what the total would be. I kept track of how many purchases I was about to make, and I even know to how multiply 1 x 16.

“Wait, how could the total be $20? I only bought 16 items!”

“Everything is $1.25 now, sir.”

“Even a can of okra?”

“Sir, if you really like okra, why not just spring for the extra 25 cents?”

“Because I hate okra.

Everyone hates okra. I was buying it because it was a dollar. How about those helium balloons? How much are those?”

“Everything is $1.25, sir.”

“Okay, I understand the increase with food, but why did balloons go up?”

“Because we put helium in them.”

Frustrated, I wandered around the store putting my willpower to the test. At a buck and a quarter, could I resist a half gallon of generic cola, a set of three screwdrivers, sunglasses, or five pounds of dog food? Hey, we could get a dog someday.

I wondered if I should start a support group for people like me who are getting sucked into an increasingly more costly addiction.

My support group would have six steps to recovery: 1. Admit you are powerless to pass up a dollar bag of

ginger snaps.

2. Resist the notion that lower prices are a higher power.

3. Never question the price of goodness.

4. Share your story with others so they can be savers as well.

5. Pray the $1.25 stores never go to $1.50.

6. Before buying on impulse, look deeply inside your shelf to be sure of what you really need.

As I was finishing this column, I saw a rumor online that the dollar store may revert to the old dollar price for some select items that are less popular.

My goal now is to find a really good okra cookbook.

Let’s study the Bible What is the purpose of the Bible?

(Read 2 Timothy 3:14-17) “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for %\ 5HY instruction 5RQ 3XUNH\ in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16) Many people reject the Bible without ever actually reading it. But since the Bible claims to answer life’s deepest questions, it makes sense to see what it has to say. Even if you read a paragraph at a time, God can teach you the Bible’s truth and use it in your life. You will

also discover that Jesus Christ was a real person who loves you and that life’s greatest joy comes from following him.

Timothy’s relationship to the Bible began when he was a child and learned the OT Scriptures from his mother and grandmother. They did not merely teach him the facts of the Bible; they gave him assurance and spiritual understanding. Timothy knew for himself the truth of the word; he did not depend on others to defend the word for him. This word imparted faith to him (Romans 10:17), and this faith in Christ brought salvation. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 are a great testimony to the divine origin and character of the Bible.

The Bible is the inspired Word of God. The word “inspired” means “God-breathed — filled with the breath of God.” The Spirit of God enabled men of God to write the Word of God (see 2 Peter 1:20-21), for the

Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library offers Summer Reading Challenge The Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library is excited to launch the annual Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s challenge takes place from May 31 through July 30. Anyone can participate, and this year the challenge is easier than ever because participants can customize a reading goal to fit their lifestyle.

MPHPL Youth Services Coordinator Anne Britton said, “Reading is essential to success in our society. Reading is highly valued and important for social and economic advancement.

Research indicates that children who do not read during the summer can lose reading progress made during the past school year. Our Summer Reading Challenge keeps young readers from losing critical literacy skills during summer break and puts our students on the path to become engaged lifelong learners.”

Acceptable examples of reading include: Reading by yourself; Reading to or with someone; Listening to someone read to you; Listening to audiobooks; Reading newspapers, magazines and comic books; Surfing the internet and reading news articles Any reading counts toward your personal summer goal.

Summer Reading Challenge cards have been unveiled online at mphpl.org and can be downloaded or picked up at any MPHPL Adult Services or Youth Services desk.

The backside of the challenge card contains an optional record sheet that has 100 squares for participants to customize their reading goals. Regardless if participants use the optional record sheet, they will need to sign the front side of the challenge card stating that they have met their summer reading goal before the challenge ends

The MPHPL Summer Reading Challenge has been a staple of the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library for decades.

The Tivoli Theater and the Roaring Twenties 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ '5 *5(* /$:621 3DVWRU 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU If only we could turn the pages of history and journey back to the summer of 1924, midway through the Roaring Twenties.

In the summer of 1924, the public could watch the ongoing construction of Mishawaka’s most beautiful theater ever, the Tivoli, located at 208 N. Main St. May 21, 1925, saw the opening day of this magnificent theater, and it “drew capacity crowds for its 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. performances… with 2,000 to 3,000 people” in attendance.

When completed, the inside of the Tivoli would seat 950 patrons on the main level and

450 in the balcony. On the opening night, a brief speech was given by then Mayor Duncan Campbell, followed by a dedication talk by Ralph Gaylor, president of the Chamber of Commerce.

Sound movies had not yet been developed, but a silent movie was shown, which featured “birds, fairies and flowers.” Vaudeville was also a popular form of entertainment of the times. Presented on the opening day were various acts of comedy, tumbling and acrobatics, singing and talking acts, dancing and orchestra music.

We also learn from historical records, “Afterwards, theater stockholders and leading citizens celebrated the successful opening of the new landmark with a banquet at the Hotel Mishawaka.”

“Navy Blues” starred Ann Sheridan, Jack Oakie, Martha Raye and Jack Haley for this Warner Bros. picture. The second feature was “Unholy Partners” with Laraine Day, Edward G. Robinson and Edward Arnold. No doubt the latter movie was more suitable to the adult audience.

Day also starred in another movie later in 1941 with Cary Grant: “Mr. Lucky,” about “a big shot gambler who gets taken for a ride by a Park Avenue Deb.” Dozens more movies were yet to be shown during the war years at the

Tivoli Theater for both adults and youngsters.

There are a handful of presidents students of history and civics should get to know to help understand what made America the dominant global nation it is today.

For the most part, today’s youngsters take for granted America’s position in the world.

It was no accident how we got here, and understanding how our republic works is central.

While President Donald Trump was an easy target for his bombastic style, he wasn’t much different from President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, who found himself in the Oval Office early in the 20th century after to the assassination of President William McKinley.

In 1900, the Republicans ran “T.R.” for vice president to get rid of him. As governor of New York, he had been an irritating maverick to old-guard politicians. Their plan backfired when McKinley was assassinated.

As president, “T.R.” created havoc in both government and business with a vast variety of reforms. A Republican, he believed in a strong Navy and had the pre-World War I battleships of the Great White Fleet circle the globe showing off the growing power of the United States of America. He believed in a “big stick” policy, as in “walk softly but carry a big stick.”

Roosevelt oversaw the momentous building of the Panama Canal, opening the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, cutting in half the time needed to go from ocean to ocean without traveling around South American horn.

The other Roosevelt, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, arguably has been called America’s greatest president.

He served more than 12 years, guiding the nation through the dark years of the 1930s Depression and into the last five years of World War II. Ironically, one of our best presidents succeeded him after he died a few weeks into his first term.

Vice-President Harry S. Truman became known among detractors as “His Accidency.”

He was the only 20th century president to have only a high school diploma.

FDR had not confided in Truman about the nation’s development of an atomic bomb. He was told about the highly-secret $2 billion World War II project after moving into the Oval Office. Just a few months later, Truman made the historic — and perhaps one of the century’s most important — decision to drop the two devastating bombs on Japan.

The Cold War started while he was in office and lasted for more than 40 years until President Ronald Reagan built up American armed forces to the point it caused the Soviet Union to go broke trying to

keep up. History has recorded his 1987 speech in Berlin with the line, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”

The accomplishments of presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy led us through the turbulent 1950s and into the ‘60s. It was “Ike” who was the architect of our interstate highway system.

Kennedy launched us to the moon with our space program.

Kennedy, and his vice president, Lyndon Johnson, changed America with their quest for meaningful civil rights.

Perhaps the most polarizing of our nation’s leaders was the seventh, President Andrew Jackson. He led the newly established Democratic Party and became known as King Andrew I for opposing Congress and never hesitating to use his veto powers. His major

government action was signing the Indian Removal Act, which forced Native Americans on ancestral lands east of the Mississippi to move to the untamed land in the West, primarily in what became Oklahoma.

For the younger generations who are bored with history or lack a basic understanding of American civics, a study of these U.S. presidents might supply the necessary ingredients to becoming knowledgeable and informed Americans.

Sixties Flashback —

Moviemakers said ‘It’s just not “commercial”’ The indefatigable Bruce Brown wasn’t about to give up on his movie project.

After being rebuffed by %\ 5$1'$/ Hollywood & +,// distributors, Brown chose to throw himself wholeheartedly into getting the documentary, “The Endless Summer,” out to the general public, even though it could spell financial ruin for him.

Brown was born in San Francisco in 1938 and grew up in Long Beach. After high school, he joined the Navy and was assigned to a base in Hawaii, where he filmed fellow surfers with an 8mm movie camera.

Back home in California, he became a beach lifeguard and an amateur filmmaker. Beginning in the late 1950s, he created five short 16mm surfing movies in five years, screening them later to rapt audiences at local high schools and rented halls.

In 1962, Brown came up with the story idea that would become “The Endless Summer.” His feature would focus on two young surfers traveling the globe and following the summer season while chasing down the perfect wave. It would be a fantasy come true for any surfer.

The story would star two top-notch local wave jockeys — Robert August, 18, and Mike Hynson, 20. (Both had appeared in some of Brown’s

earlier works.) August had been a straight-A student body president at Huntington Beach High School; Hynson was a cocky “loose cannon” trying to stay one step ahead of his draft board.

The three departed Los Angeles in November 1963 and returned three months later after crossing the equator four times and visiting eight foreign lands. August and Hynson became surfboard makers while the moviemaker set about editing approximately 9 miles of celluloid. (Armed with a 20-pound windup 16mm camera, Brown had a meager 50 feet of film available for each shoot before having to reload.)

Roadblocks loomed large for Brown when he finished his movie. In 1964, when he approached Tinseltown movie distributors, they all but laughed in Bruce’s face.

While “The Endless Summer” did feature incredible surfing scenes, Brown’s friendly, wisecracking narration and a decent instrumental soundtrack

by The Sandals surf band, the distributors opined that it simply wasn’t “commercial” enough to go nationwide. But, in his heart, its creator knew his feature would appeal to surfers and non-surfers alike.

Brown took matters into his own hands, aware that this option involved a huge financial gamble. He and a partner borrowed $50,000 (about $300,000 in today’s money) to enlarge the film to 35mm. He rented a theater in landlocked

Movie world bean counters, however, continued to shrug their shoulders.

Brown then persuaded a Manhattan theater to give “The Endless Summer” a oneweek tryout. It ran for a year, with about 20% of attendees being repeat ticket buyers.

The movie was picked up for national (and, later, worldwide) distribution, eventually earning $20 million.

“The Endless Summer” became a cultural turning point and the most influential documentary ever about surfing.

Fern Cliff Nature Preserve perfect for nature lovers Fern Cliff Nature Preserve is for the birds!

Also, butterflies, wild flowers, ferns, mosses, liverworts, bryophites, *5($7 flies, ants, (6&$3(6 mosquitoes, spiders and, %\ 52' .,1* of course, trees. In other words, it’s perfect for nature lovers!

The 157-acre preserve, located in Putnam County southwest of Greencastle, is one of Indiana’s best kept natural sites. That’s probably because there’s no big sign, no arrows and no flashing lights to let one know to slow down for the entrance. It’s basically a narrow break in the trees and underbrush with a short gravel drive.

In addition, there’s no spacious visitor’s center staffed by knowledgeable state naturalists with hands-on displays, photos and maps. There are no restrooms and the tiny grass and gravel parking area off County Road 375 South is easy to miss.

There is, however, a sign at the trailhead that welcomes visitors and clearly states that the preserve is open from dusk to dawn every day and that no bikes and motorized vehicles are allowed. Neither is rock climbing or rappelling. It’s primarily for hiking, bird watching and photography.

Quiet descends in just a few steps, the sun is pretty much blocked out, civilization seems miles away and the only sounds are those of calling birds and buzzing insects. A reasonably wide 1 1/2-milelong in-and-out trail steadily rises to about 190 feet of elevation before angling down toward the cliffs.

The preserve is bordered

Preserve in 1988 and is a registered National Natural Landmark. It’s unique because of its steep sandstone cliffs and its lush fern-filled ravines, hence the name Fern Cliff. In addition, the preserve contains a mesic upland hardwood forest full of huge oak, beech, ash, hickory, sugar maple, wild cherry and tulip trees that provide a thick overhead canopy. Mesic refers to a type of habitat with a moderate to well-balanced supply of moisture. It’s a term used to describe the amount of water in a habitat.

The understory of the forest contains dogwood, hydrangea, paw paw and green brier, along with a large array of herbaceous plants and a profusion of ferns and bryophytes, which are the little flowerless mosses and liverworts that cover the ground. The place is truly a botanist’s floral paradise.

Early in the 20th century a commercial mining company extracted sandstone from the cliffs, crushed it onsite and delivered it to a bottle manufacturing plant in Terra Haute. The material from this quarry was the source for the first greenish glass that made the Coca Cola bottles so recognizable. What’s left of the abandoned crushing mill still remains in the sandstone canyon.

The journey begins at the courthouse square in downtown Greencastle. Head south on Jackson Street for a block and then turn west (right) onto Walnut Street.

In four miles, cross over Big Walnut Creek and then turn south at the first road after the bridge. At the next three intersections bear to the left and immediately after crossing Snake Creek turn right. The entrance to the preserve is a mile ahead on the right. Don’t rely on GPS because service is unreliable.

Predictably, record-buying teens loved it. And why not?

Who didn’t look forward to summer vacation, three sublime months shrilly announced by the rapid-fire clanging of a bell that promised endless possibilities of a school-free, sunshine-bathed season? Here in America, Cooper’s bratty, tongue-incheek single reached Billboard’s Top 10 and became a No. 1 winner in England.

Some of the song’s lyrics

are, well, “different”: “School’s out for summer, school’s out forever, school’s been blown to pieces” Probably the most deft line, though, is: “We’ve got no class, and we’ve got no principles” Predictably, many adults railed against the irreverent record, and some radio stations refused to play it.

Cooper’s action packed concerts — as much modern vaudeville as “shock rock” — are a mash-up of comedy, horror and music, and Cooper often ends his shows with “School’s Out.” In an Esquire magazine interview, Cooper said, “When we did ‘School’s Out,’ I knew we had just done the national anthem, (that) I’ve become the Francis Scott Key of the last day of school!”

As a boy, %\ 5$1'$/ Vincent & +,// Furnier loved to watch old movies on one of Phoenix’s independent TV stations. The Bowery Boys comedy flicks were a special favorite. In one particular story, when one of the characters does something (typically) stupid, a buddy taunts him with, “Hey, school’s out!”

Furnier liked the way that phrase sounded when he rolled it around in his mind.

Little did he know that years later it would fuel his first million-selling single as Alice Cooper when he co-wrote “School’s Out” with fellow musician Michael Bruce.

Picture a pre-fame Alice Cooper as a teenager. You might cast him as a nerd and the laughing stock of Phoenix’s Cortez High School.

But in reality, Furnier was quite the big man on campus there. He set school records as a varsity cross-country runner. He wrote a popular column (“Get Outta My Hair!”) for the school newspaper.

He and some fellow trackand-field jocks formed a rock band called the Spiders. And when they cut a Furnierled single — a punkish ditty called “Don’t Blow Your Mind” — on a tiny local label, it rocketed to No. 1 on Phoenix radio in 1966, Furnier’s senior year. “We owned that school. We owned everything about it,” he has boasted.

“I had a great time in high school. I was Ferris Bueller!”

“School’s Out” became the seventh single release by Alice Cooper, at the time the name of both the lead singer and his backup band. It was the only 45 issued from Cooper’s fifth album, not surprisingly called “School’s Out.” The obstreperous disc opens with a screechy, fingernails-on-the-blackboard lead guitar line.
