At the South Bend Museum of Art, the focus is not only on the display of artistic works by artists in their field, but also on the community of makers who contribute to the quality of life in the city, county and surrounding communities.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the museum, located inside the Century Center in downtown South Bend. It was founded in 1947 with the bequest of a local teacher, Carlotta Banta, and originally established in the carriage house of the Studebaker mansion. It moved to the Century Center in the early 1970s. Today, it occupies three floors of the north wing of the riverfront building on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Joining the SBMA team is the new director, Philip Nadasdy. He grew up in the Midwest and was most recently the assistant director of public engagement at the Seattle Art Museum.

This is a time for the South Bend museum to embrace its history and look to the future, Nadasdy said.

The museum is planning to reinstall the museum’s permanent collection of artwork. The main exhibit galleries will be refreshed to “bring those pieces out that have not seen the light of day for a while or even ever” back into the spotlight Continued on page 3

Martinec leads staff at Food Bank of Northern Indiana %\ 7,0 $6+/(< 6WDII :ULWHU Food is a basic human need and it may come as a surprise to some to know 12.9% of the people served by the Food Bank of Northern Indiana in six counties are food insecure. It’s a significant number and the staff of the food bank works tirelessly to address the need.

Leading the Food Bank of Northern Indiana is Marijo Martinec, executive director and CEO. She has filled that role since September 2018 and has worked at the food bank since October 2010 at the tail end of the recession.

“I had worked in the tourism industry for many years (in northern Indiana) and lost my job during the recession,” she said.

“I was a substitute teacher for about a year.”

Martinec grew up in Chicago

and moved to South Bend with her family while in high school.

She said she was attracted to the food bank because “I believed in its mission.”

As president and CEO, Martinec leads the organization and works with the board of directors “to develop and to execute a strategic plan” to address the hunger needs. She also does a lot of fundraising for the food bank.

She leads a staff of 20 parttime and full-time workers and also sometimes gets to work directly with the volunteers, whom she described as a very dedicated group and some of which have been volunteering at the food bank for several years.

The food bank serves the middle part of northern Indiana to include LaPorte, St. Joseph, Elkhart, Starke, Kosciusko and Marshall counties. It is part of Feeding America and one of 11 food banks in Indiana.

A warehouse full of food comes in and is distributed through 125 agency partners such as soup kitchens, homeless shelters and others. The Community Food Pantry of St. Joseph County is also on site and people come to the pantry to pick up food.

Since Martinec came on board in 2010 she noted there have been peaks and valleys, but the need has remained consistent.

It increased during the COVID pandemic and “shed some light on what we already knew, people struggle with hunger.”

As noted earlier, 12.9% in the six counties served don’t have enough to eat to maintain a healthy lifestyle. “We are seeing a lot of new faces,” she said. “A lot of senior citizens on a fixed income.”

A decision was made to shift permanently to drive thru only to get food from the pantry. It is primarily a result of the pandemic.

Martinec said dealing with hunger issues can be difficult to say the least. “I often say people who come to get help have so much more courage than I would have,” she said. “There is a lot of shame associated with hunger. You don’t wear it as a badge of honor.”

She said she likes being able to help people with a basic necessity. “Everybody needs food,” she noted. And she also enjoys meeting new people, donors and working with the volunteers. It is also a joy to see people donate money to the food bank because they grew up in a household where hunger was a problem.

A frustration is “there are not enough hours in the day some days.”

It is not just homeless or unemployed people struggling with hunger. Martinec said some people have jobs but simply don’t make enough money.

She also noted they are seeing single people and college students struggling with hunger.

‘American Pie’ was an epic poem in musical form Don McLean

In the early morning hours of Feb. 3, 1959, a small private plane slammed into a cornfield in north cen$ %RRPHU %ODVW tral Iowa.

7R 7KH 3DVW The accident %\ 5$1'$/ took the life & +,// of pop music superstar Charles Hardin “Buddy” Holly, age 22. Fellow touring stars Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper and the pilot, Roger Peterson, also died in the still unexplained catastrophe.

While millions of teenage rock fans were undoubtedly devastated by the news, few probably felt more pain than 13-year-old Don McLean, who learned of Holly’s demise from headlines in the newspapers he delivered. “Buddy Holly was the first and last person I ever really idolized as a kid,” McLean has said. The loss he felt would inspire his multimillion-selling touchstone that, to him, lamented “the day

the music died.” (Of course, it didn’t really die. What died was the innocence of the times; the music, as always, continued to evolve).

McLean, born in New York in 1945, dropped out of Villanova University to follow his muse as a folk singer/songwriter. Mentored by pal Pete Seeger, McLean drifted around the East Coast club circuit for years, but never became a headliner.

He spent two years creating “Tapestry,” a 1969 album of original tunes. A small label — Mediarts — released it to good reviews but few sales. Mediarts was eventually absorbed by United Artists Records, a major company that had the clout to aggressively promote McLean’s second LP, the 1971 multi-platinum-selling “American Pie.” “American Pie” wasn’t just another nostalgia-fueled 45; in reality, it was an 800-word epic poem in musical form. McLean would later explain, “I wanted to write a song that summed up everything I felt about America and music.”

As with many complex poems, deeper meanings lay beneath the surface of “American

Pie.” Its dense, often confusing lyrics grow increasingly more somber as McLean’s tune unfolds amid religious references and enigmatic characters that begged several questions: Was Bob Dylan the jester? Did the crown once belong to Elvis Presley? Was the marching band the Beatles? Was Mick Jagger the Devil incarnate?

McLean has always divulged little about “American Pie,” but it’s easy to see he bemoans the loss of the carefree times of his,

the first rock ‘n’ roll generation.

While his sing-along single may appear to be rollicking, even carefree, there’s actually little to cheer about here. To McLean, America was moving inexorably toward adverse times, due in part to inner-city riots, Vietnam war protests and political assassinations.

“In ‘American Pie,’ things are headed in the wrong direction … becoming less idyllic …,” he once confessed. “It is a morality song, in a sense.”

On April 7, 2015, in Christie’s auction room in New York, McLean’s 16-page working manuscript for “American Pie” sold for an astounding $1.2 million. It became the thirdhighest price ever paid for an American literary item.

The normally closed-mouthed McLean has often used a wry retort when people press him too hard about his song’s meaning: “It means,” he would answer, “I don’t ever have to work again if I don’t want to.”

‘Holm for the Holidays’ at The History Museum The History Museum invites the community to take a guided tour of Copshaholm, decorated for the yuletide season, during “Holm for the Holidays,” taking place through Thursday, Jan. 6.

Tours of the Oliver Mansion or Copshaholm, as the Oliver family called their home, are offered daily except New Year’s Day. Tours times are 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tours are limited; masks are required in the Oliver Mansion. Admission is $10 for adults, $8.50 for seniors, $6 for youth 6-17 and free for members.

Over 20 Christmas trees, as well as festooned fireplace mantels and tabletops, are just some of the holiday decorations that can be seen in the historic house.

On the main staircase, garlands of greenery are draped from the banisters leading to the second and third floors. The den’s Christmas tree is decorated with a Victorian theme to reflect how it looked when the family lived there. Red and white striped stockings are hung from the fireplace. In the dining room, the table is set with china, crystal and silver, all original to the home.

Copshaholm was home to the J.D. Oliver family for 75 years.

Its furnishings are original, showing the house as it appeared when the Oliver family lived there. J.D. Oliver was president of the Oliver Chilled Plow Works, located in South Bend. The company was founded

by J.D.’s father, James Oliver, inventor of the chilled plow.

Copshaholm and the Historic Oliver Garden are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“This is the right time to do this,” he said.

One of the components of the SBMA that drew Nadasdy to apply for the position is the focus on the aiming of art in the museum’s classrooms. There are three components to the museum’s philosophy: • See, as in visiting the galleries and taking in the art.

• Belong, as in becoming a member or volunteer.

• Make.

Art classes are offered at the museum in ceramics, drawing, painting, fiber arts and jewelry making, among others. There is also studio time available for makers to come in and craft their pieces.

Nadasdy said he is not an artist himself but appreciates that most of his staff are practicing artists.

Along with curator Mark Rospenda, Nadasdy said the SBMA is getting ready to welcome the new year with a nod toward its history and a look at the future of art in South Bend.

Future art displays and exhibitions will be including art created using modern technology, such as 3D sculptures and computer graphic imaging.

Local artists are invited to submit their work in what will be a juried exhibition to celebrate the communities SBMA serves. This special exhibition is open to as many artists as possible, Rospenda said. The open call for submissions is be-

ing issued in January.

“This will be a year of transition,” Nadasdy said. “It’s a new chapter for the museum. It’s a new perspective and a way to engage new artists and grow partnerships.”

The SBMA is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday. It is closed Monday and Tuesday and all major holidays. There is no admission charge, but a suggested donation is welcomed.

The Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library is excited to launch its annual winter reading challenge. This year’s theme is “Reading for the Chill of It” and the challenge will take place from Jan. 3 through Feb. 28.

We try to make the activities fun for everyone and not too difficult or time consuming. MPHPL gives out hardcover books for prizes, reinforcing the love of reading in our community. It is a win-win for patrons and MPHPL.”

South Bend Symphony Orchestra celebrates ‘A Sunday Afternoon of Art and Music’ “Celebrate Local: A Sunday Afternoon of Art and Music” unites a local artist on stage with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra for an afternoon of distinctive interdisciplinary experience.

The symphony, seven composers and one visual artist take the stage at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, for a one-of-a-kind interdisciplinary experience of music and art.

The second in the June H. Edward Mosaic Series is set to Georges Seurat’s “A Sunday Afternoon the Island of La Grande Jatte,” and South Bend Symphony Orchestra, along with composers Jorge Muñiz, Marjorie Rusche, Zae Munn, Jessica Carter, Eli Kahn, Ryan Olivier, Carmen Tellez and Camilla Tassi, create an afternoon of music and art that showcases

the local performing arts scene.

The concert begins with Gabriel Faure’s “Masques et Bergamasques,” followed by the individual renditions of seven local composers for a project centered on Seurat’s painting. The production includes a three-minute piece from each composer, interpreting different key components of the painting.

A one-minute spoken introduction before each piece will be presented from each designated composer.

The second part of the concert will be a reiteration of the performances with the corresponding visual component interspersed with Erik Satie’s “Gymnopédies,” presented by visual artist and recent Notre Dame graduate Camilla Tassi.

The audience will be enlightened by the combination of local composers, stunning visuals

and South Bend Symphony Orchestra.

Tim Woods helps people find their dream %< /2,6 720$6=(:6., )HDWXUH :ULWHU The expression “been there, done that” is a good philosophy to have when seeking out advice on opening a new business. For retired attorney Tim Woods, the experience he brings to his role as a SCORE volunteer allows him to help people make knowledge-based decisions, even if that decision is not one the person initially wanted.

SCORE is a national organization of senior volunteers who bring various business skills into play to help entrepreneurs or potential new business owners navigate the challenge of opening a business of their own. Woods has been a volunteer at SCORE North Central Indiana Chapter since 2014, after he retired from his law practice.

He grew up in Niles, Mich., and graduated from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 1965. Woods worked on the legal team representing businesses after civil right laws were enacted in the 1960s. He was a partner at Jones Obenchain in South Bend. It was exciting to be

part of that era, Woods said.

While he no longer practices law and cannot advise people on legal matters, Woods gained experience in human resources, municipal regulations and other nuances of everyday business know-how that now serve him well. His role, he said, is to help people come to their own conclusions on whether they should or should not pursue the dream of being a business owner.

“It’s not a lot different than what I did as an attorney,” Woods said. “I can help people with legal questions, but I cannot represent them as clients. I now lead people to think about what they have to do to (accomplish) what they want.”

Volunteers working with SCORE provide confidential services free of charge to those hoping to open a business and business owners needing help with an established business.

It is for people with ideas and those already in business, he said.

Volunteers, like Woods, can help with writing a business plan and offer guidance in accounting, legal, human resources, marketing and

manufacturing matters. These are offered with in-person meetings, phone consultations and even virtual meetings.

The North Central Indiana chapter serves St. Joseph, Elkhart and Marshall counties in Indiana and southern Berrien and Cass counties in Michigan.

SCORE is always looking for volunteers and Woods encourages those with business experience to sign up.

Volunteers can be business mentors or experts on specific subject matters to provide chapter support and help with marketing and community outreach. Volunteers are also involved in workshops and helping with local initiatives, like the SPARK program founded by St. Mary’s College.

Softball is in Bob Gorny’s blood %\ 7,0 $6+/(< 6WDII :ULWHU

It’s cold and snowy and no softball games are being played on the diamonds, but that doesn’t stop the planning for the Michiana Senior Softball League. As one of three commissioners for the league, Bob Gorny is involved in that process.

Gorny, a lifelong resident of Mishawaka, has played softball since he was a teenager and before that played baseball during the summer in park leagues.

Eventually he switched to slow pitch softball in a Sunday night league in South Bend and then played in another league for several years before giving it up, at least temporarily, when his children became old enough to play.

Since 2007 he has played in the Michiana Senior Softball League, which was started

by Dick Martens as a senior softball recreation program at the Battell Center in 1988. The league recently had been playing in Normain and Henry Frank parks in Mishawaka Tuesdays and Thursdays.

But because of expansion the

league will be moving to the Byers Complex in South Bend in 2022. The complex is larger and Mishawaka is converting park space to other uses.

As a commissioner, Gorny puts together the league schedules, makes sure team rosters are completed in a timely manner, oversees the “draft” where players are added to rosters and enforces the league rules.

“We (commissioners) make sure it’s seamless for the players,” he said. “We guide the league along.”

The Michiana league has a juniors division for ages 52 and up and a senior division for ages 62 and up, though some players above age 62 participate in both divisions. Special rules allow, for one example, for courtesy runners to be used if a batter reaches first base and is not able to run the bases. Another example is allowing some players to bat but not play in the field.

There are four outfielders and five infielders.

“At least you’re not playing against players in their 20s,” Gorny said, admitting it is a simple reality the skills of players diminish when they reach a

certain age.

There are roughly 160 players in the league and it has grown in recent years. The season starts in May and finishes in August with a tournament following. A banquet is held and then some fall ball is played during September to the end of October.

Gorny said playing in the senior league allows him “to meet new guys often” because there are many players. Living and playing in Mishawaka for as long as he has, moving to the Byers Complex will be a transition time and a lot of memories were formed by players since the league began in 1988.

“Mishawaka was very good to us,” he said. “They kept the two diamonds available to us long after all the other softball leagues had closed down.”

Byers has better facilities, more parking, has safer field conditions and is more strategically located to allow players from surrounding counties to get there easier.

Gorny retired from Kroger after 43 years as an employee.

Prior to COVID, he had also played basketball during the winter months.

And the winning bid is ... the original Batmobile finds new home On Jan. 13, 2013, Lot 5037 rolled smoothly onto center stage at the prestigious Barrett-Jackson car auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. The sleek, low-slung vehicle, owned by California auto customizer George Barris, glistened like a black diamond under the lights.

Moments later, furious bidding erupted among the well-heeled.

After 13 minutes, it was all over, the buyer elated, the audience stunned. TV’s original Batmobile had found a new home.

— During the 1950s, American car companies held annual auto shows, where attendees were often enthralled by what the factory folks called “concept cars.” Such boldly designed vehicles were constructed to showcase new styling and technology, but were never offered for sale.

A decade before the Batmobile appeared on TV’s “Batman” show, the Lincoln-Mercury division of Ford Motor Company had proudly displayed its Lincoln Futura concept car at the 1955 Chicago Auto Show.

Bill Schmidt, the company’s chief stylist, had been inspired to come up with the design for the Futura one day after he had scrutinized a shark while scuba diving.

Schmidt later designed what would amount to a “laboratory on wheels,” an experimental machine loaded with advanced — really advanced — engineering and design features.

Measuring nearly 19 feet in length, the Futura was 7 feet wide but stood less than 4½ feet high. It sported rakish tail fins, Plexiglas bubble canopies, a push-button gearshift and space for a telephone behind the center console.

Most concept cars, expensive as they were to design and build, were eventually scrapped. In this case, though, the Futura was later bought

by George Barris. Never titled and therefore uninsurable, the auto sat idle for years, slowly deteriorating behind Barris Kustom City shop in North Hollywood.

In August 1965, two producers from the forthcoming TV show “Batman” approached another California car customizer, Dean Jeffries, about building a Batmobile for the program. Jeffries soon began working on the body of a 1959 Cadillac before realizing he wouldn’t have time to finish the project before the three-week deadline. He was paid off, and the producers turned to Barris.

If you have a good living trust that contains in-home health care instructions, there’s a good chance it can keep you or your spouse out of a nursing home, saving most of that $7,500 each month, meanwhile maintaining your own privacy and dignity and allowing you to remain in your own home.

Barris himself painted it a gloss black and added bright red-and-orange trim to help make it “pop” on color television.

Miraculously, the project was completed on time, and the Batmobile debuted on national TV on Jan. 12, 1966. That’s when the Caped Crusader and Robin first roared out of the Batcave in a gadget-loaded vehicle meant to instill fear in the hearts of Gotham’s lawbreaking louts.

— In Scottsdale, the new Batmobile owner set an auction record by paying $4.2 million (plus another $420,000 for the 10% buyer’s premium) to acquire the iconic collectible. That was quite a markup for George Barris as, decades earlier, Ford had sold him their $250,000 Futura for the princely sum of $1.

Studebaker National Museum starts GoFundMe campaign for iconic ‘Muppet car’ The Studebaker National Museum has announced a GoFundMe campaign to restore its 1951 Studebaker Commander “Muppet Car” to its original cinematic splendor.

The Commander, which starred in the 1979 film, “The Muppet Movie,” holds a special place in the hearts of millions as it took Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear on a cross-country adventure. Once production wrapped, the car sat on the Warner Brothers back lot for years.

In 2004, it was gifted to the museum by members of the Studebaker Drivers Club’s Orange Empire Chapter, in care of Richard and Phyllis Holcomb.

The museum will restore the iconic car to its on-screen appearance, featuring its signature psychedelic paint scheme. Addi-

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield collaborates with food bank Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield in Indiana announced it is investing $240,900 over the next three years in the Food Bank of Northern Indiana.

Funding will enable to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana to construct a permanent drivethru façade for the Community Food Pantry of St. Joseph County, internal construction relocation of the Healthy Choices Market and relocation of USDA commodity storage during year one, and healthy produce purchases to distribute through the Community Food Pantry of St. Joseph County and the Healthy Choices Market in years two and three.

This announcement marks Anthem’s partnership with all 11 Indiana food banks to create healthier communities.

Anthem’s support of the Food Bank of Northern Indiana expands on the company’s history of supporting Indiana residents and communities in addressing the many factors that influence health, including access to healthy food. According to data available at “Close to Home,” a social driver of health information available through Anthem, Inc., the parent company of Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, 14.7% of the residents of St. Joseph County are food insecure — these friends, neighbors, co-workers and family members don’t have regular access

to nutritious foods to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Hunger is a community health, school performance and economic issue and exists in every county in the United States.

“Access to food is a basic need, and lack of access has a significant negative impact on a person’s health,” said Mark Schneider, regional vice president of Medicare for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

“As a lifetime, trusted health partner, Anthem believes in supporting the person’s wholehealth needs, like access to nutritious food, because we know it will help people live healthier lives.”

The Community Food Pantry of St. Joseph County, located onsite at the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, is the larg-

est pantry in its network of 125 agency partners in Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Marshall, Starke and St. Joseph counties. It is open three days per week for 16 hours each week.

This client choice pantry allows neighbors to select items that best meet their personal needs.

Currently, clients can shop two times per month.

The Food Bank quickly pivoted to a drive-thru distribution model for this pantry at the onset of the pandemic in March 2020. Time and again, the Food Bank heard from many pantry users that they preferred the drive-thru model of distribution.

In 2020, 19,283 households (79,759 individuals) used the services of the Community Food Pantry of St.

Joseph County.

“The neighbors who utilize the services the Community Food Pantry of St. Joseph County told us throughout the pandemic that they prefer the drive-thru model of distribution. Often, it’s first in, first out at pantries — that is why so many pantry clients arrive much earlier before a pantry opens. The later one arrives, the longer it will take to shop.

Waiting in a crowded pantry can cause embarrassment and anxiety for people who often have shame that they need the services a food pantry provides.

“Drive-thru services allow shoppers to remain anonymous,” said Marijo Martinec, executive director and CEO, Food Bank of Northern Indiana. She added, “We are so

humbled by the generosity of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield for this partnership that will allow us build a permanent façade, provide a more dignified shopping experience for neighbors, shelter from the four seasons of Indiana weather for our volunteers who serve these shoppers and healthier food options for those who struggle with hunger.”

This financial support is part of Anthem’s ongoing efforts to address food insecurity in the communities it serves, which also includes a $550,000 grant to the Indy Hunger Network for the statewide expansion of Community Compass, an app and website that makes it easy for people in need of food assistance to locate the resources that are available.

Is there a secret to what helps with acid reflux?

Occasional acid reflux (heartburn) isn’t unusual, but according to John Hopkin’s, 20% of the population suffers from chronic heartburn, discomfort and belching after every meal.

The diagnosis by a doctor may be gastroesophageal reflux disease. You may not feel a reflux of acid, but may have a chronic inflammation of the esophagus, called esophagitis, which is irritated with food and causes pain.

Foods commonly known to be triggers include foods high in fat, salt and spices such as:

• Fried foods • Fast foods • Processed foods • Fatty meats • Cheese • Tomato based sauces • Citrus fruits • Chocolate/peppermint • Carbonated beverages There are plenty of foods you can eat that help prevent the irritation or reflux and the number one category is the answer to the secret: fiber.

(Fiber deserves entire article) • Whole grains • Root vegetables • Green vegetables The second beneficial category is alkaline foods. Foods higher on the PH scale are alkaline and calming to the digestive system, offsetting stomach acid.

• Bananas • Melons • Cauliflower • Fennel • Nuts The third category is watery foods. Water can dilute

and weaken stomach acid.

• Celery • Cucumber • Lettuce • Watermelon • Broth-based soups • Herbal tea Let’s hear a cheer for whole foods.

Some people have success with drinking milk to coat the stomach, but go for nonfat milk or nonfat yogurt, as adding fat to the situation may cancel out the good. Another aid is ginger because of its medicinal properties of being an anti-inflammatory and alkaline in nature. Ginger tea may be a good option or just warm lemon water with a little honey. Lastly, apple cider vinegar – diluted, never full strength. I can only stomach it with really cold water, very quickly and through a straw. I take it because it’s alkaline.

Sitting room only Mary Ellen and I have a standing argument — literally, a standing argument.

She claims the first thing I do ,1 $ when I en1876+(// ter a room %\ ',&. is sit down. :2/)6,( “That makes you seem old,” she said, “and I know you are concerned about not portraying that image.” Which surprised me, because I always thought it was my wrinkly skin and balding pate that led to that assessment.

“For example,” she said, “when we went to Bob and Cathy’s for Thanksgiving, you sat down as soon as we walked in the house, while everyone else was chatting in the front hall.”

“I wasn’t feeling well and I don’t think it’s fair to count the bathroom.”

Then recently, we were shopping on Mass Avenue in Indy. As soon as we walked in a quaint little boutique, I sat down. Mary Ellen noticed. After we left, she said she was worried.

“When I saw you do that,

I thought, oh dear, frail and 100 years old.”

“Well, that’s pretty mean, Mary Ellen.”

“No, Dick. Not you. The chair was 100 years old. We were in an antique store.”

The irony of all this is that sometimes I stand when I should sit. I never sit when I eat lunch; I stand over the kitchen sink and snarf down a sandwich. Who has time to walk all the way to the table? Sometimes I don’t even make it to the counter; I just nibble my way from shelf to shelf in the fridge.

I only do this when Mary Ellen is away from home, but when she gets back it’s hard to explain mustard and ketchup droppings in the vegetable bin.

I became very obsessive about this standing/ sitting thing. I didn’t want Mary Ellen to see me as the “older” man she married, so I checked with her everywhere we went.

“Can I sit here?” I asked one evening.

“Yes, Dick, you can sit there. We’re in a restaurant.”

That weekend I was still on alert. Maybe overly so.

“Are you going to stand all evening?” Mary Ellen asked me.

“I don’t want you to think I

look elderly if I sit down too soon.”

“Dick, no one will recognize you. It’s dark in this theater.”

To make me even more paranoid, I was constantly reminded that my Apple Watch tracks my movements. And I was not doing very well. Every once in a while, the dial lights up to report how much time I’ve spent standing versus sitting. Apparently, to pass Apple standards, you need to “stand and move at least one minute 12 different hours in the day for a week.” I had to read that directive several times to understand it. Like when my pill jar says: Take two tablets three times a day with or without food. Huh? What?

By the way, you can find all kinds of advice online about how to cheat the watch.

Yes, people actually do this.

One guy admitted flapping his arms like a bird before he went to bed because he discovered it fools the watch when it registers your standing time. I tried that one night so I could show Mary Ellen on my watch that I had made some improvement.

She caught me flapping.

Now she no longer tells me not to sit: she tells me not to roost.

Solo travel multiplying %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Solo travel was gaining in popularity before the pandemic wrapped itself around the globe and it appears to be picking up speed as the world gets used to carrying vaccine passports and wearing masks.

Statistics vary, but tour operators generally indicate around half of their sign-ups are by single travelers and as many as 80% of these soloists are women.

Still a thorn in the side of single travelers are the singlesupplement fees charged by cruise ships, hotels and

tour operators.

You can avoid these fees by negotiating the price before booking or working with a travel provider that can tailor tours by, among other things, providing shared accommodations with a fellow traveler with similar interests.

Sue Zumbrun is a woman on a mission %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Sue Zumbrun was a 21-yearold custodian at Clay United Methodist Church when she answered a phone call during a blizzard in the winter of 1995.

The call was from a distraught elderly woman who was without food. Zumbrun and others were able to assist the woman, but it was then Zumbrun and her friend, Jean Womer, decided it was time to start a food pantry.

“We served five families in the first week,” Zumbrun remembered. That number has since grown to 654 families served in October 2021.

The pantry, located at Clay Church Firehouse Campus, 17646 Cleveland Road, is open noon to 3 p.m. Mondays and 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays. Guests pull up and are given lists from which to choose around 20 items. “I believe people should have choice,” she said.

The pantry is supplied by Cultivate Culinary, Northern Indiana Food Bank, Trader Joe’s and others, including the congregation and community members.

However, growth at first was slow going, said Zumbrun, who grew up in Granger and raised her family in South Bend.

And as the pantry grew, so did her responsibilities at Clay.

“I started at custodian and worked up doing different jobs like administrative assistant.”

Now, Zumbrun is director of

missional life, overseeing the church’s international mission work as well as the many local programs, including Tree of Love, Backpack and Beyond and more. “I have a desk, but I don’t get to sit at it,” she commented, which illustrates her hands-on approach.

“I’ll get God-inspired,” she explained. “He’ll put it upon my heart to do something for the community.”

A recent example is the church’s new mobile food pantry. In June 2021 Zumbrun noticed a lull in visitors to the pantry, though she was aware of a need on the west side of South Bend through her work with an emergency initiative.

“A lot of people don’t have transportation,” she observed.

“It was time to take the food to the people.”

A grant from United Way helped make the inspiration a reality, and the mobile pantry has now served over 1,060 people the church would not have reached otherwise. In the process, Zumbrun said she has “met some awesome people.”

Some of the awesome people Zumbrun has met are the many volunteers who bring these missions to life. Currently there are roughly 120 volunteers from both the church and the community involved in CUMC programs. “Volunteers are huge. I can’t do it without them. I’m truly blessed.”

But rather than rest on her laurels, Zumbrun was already looking to the coming year.

“The need is going to increase,” she predicted. “Please give generously.”

Donations to the Food Pantry can be made at the church office at the Firehouse Campus between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

World War II, 1943 —

The Navy Midshipmen and Notre Dame Editor’s Note: This is the first part of a two-part series. %\ 3$6725 *5(* /$:621 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU It was brought to public attention by several announcers during the Navy vs. Notre Dame game of Nov. 6, 2021 (paraphrased): If not for the presence of the United States Navy and Midshipmen on the campus of Notre Dame, the university might not have survived financially during World War II. Hundreds if not thousands of prospective Notre Dame students were taken away by the World War II draft or voluntary enlistment for military service, causing a severe absence of students, tuition and financial income.

Almost immediately, the Navy chose Notre Dame as a site to train many hundreds of men who would become future Navy officers for various assignments. This story is dedicated to the memory of all Navy Midshipmen and the United States Navy who helped save Notre Dame University during World War II, especially “The Third Midshipmen’s Class at Notre Dame” in 1943.

I begin with a brief story from a book titled “Capstan, September 1943” I most humbly and proudly own in my World War historical collection. We will learn much about the “Midshipmen School, U.S. Naval Reserver, Notre Dame, Indiana.” This priceless and likely rare book shows the dozens of men who would be graduated from the United State Naval Reserve Midshipmen School and would “assume your duties with the naval forces of the U.S.” It may never be known how many of these brave men left this Midshipmen’s School at Notre Dame and never returned alive to their hometowns, families or friends.

“On the thirty-first day of May … nineteen hundred and forty three, observant citizens … of South Bend, Indiana, may have noticed open trucks, crammed to the bustling point with … young manhood, steaming … towards the verdant campus of the University of Notre Dame. Class Number Three was reporting for duty.” The already ensigns would hopefully be promoted to Midshipmen after a grueling coursework of damage control, navigation, ordinance, seamanship and much more.

The men came from small and big cities and towns throughout America. One such ensign was already graduated from Franklin College, Class of 1943: “John L.W. Duncan, R.R. No. 2, Mishawaka, Ind.” It’s not known if he is still alive or what happened to him. Does anyone know?

In part two we will tell of a love story, if you will, about a Midshipmen’s letters from Notre Dame to his girl at Cornell University.

The entire industry is in a state of flux as it staggers back from losing more than 90% of its business in the spring of 2020. It has not recouped the robust business travel that kept it bustling in the past. As a result, it has to make up the difference by boosting leisure travel and increasing its prices in this sector. Some airlines have closed down first-class and filled the space with businessclass and premium-economy seats.

Most forecasters predict ticket prices will continue to rise for the next few years, the assortment of fees will expand and some — think of baggage fees — will spike, and seats will get smaller and closer together.

If it’s a heart attack, look for these signs.

Most attacks involve discomfort in the middle of the chest that can last a few minutes or go away and come back. They feel like you’re being squeezed and can be painful.

Bustling traffic, noisy neighbors, relentless relatives, busybody bosses and you’ll think of a few more.

Those aren’t really headaches, although they may be causes.

Most of us will suffer at least one headache this year.

More than 70 million people in this country suffer from intermittent headaches, according to a national survey.

While everyone has heard of migraines, only about one in 10 individuals suffer their blinding pain and the accompanying complaints, such as sensitivity to light, noise and smells, nausea and upset stomach among others.

Sinus headaches usually are the result of infected sinuses and hover around the front of your face — forehead, nose and cheeks.

Cluster headaches hit about 1% of the population.

Erasing these attacks calls for learning how to relax mentally as well as physically. Getting enough sleep is a good start. So is some form of regular exercise. Swimming,

biking, walking and gardening are simple means to keep you moving enough to assure you of a good night’s sleep.

If you’re experiencing headaches more than once a week for any reason, make an appointment with your primary care physician to discuss their source and suggested solutions to the problem.

Since Cuba’s basically closed, consider visiting Little Havana Going to Cuba to satisfy one of the items on your bucket list has become increasingly difficult. The U.S. government not only forbids *5($7 American (6&$3(6 cruise lines %\ 52' .,1* to dock there and has limited American airlines to flights only to Havana, but has eliminated the popular People-to-People program that allowed Americans to travel throughout Cuba, meet its people and learn about its culture.

It’s still possible to go to Cuba on one of several other programs (medical, religious, scientific, etc.) but if you do, stick strictly to the itinerary and don’t attempt to work in a day at the beach, because you may be audited when you get home and possibly fined.

There is an alternative that eliminates just about all the hassles of traveling, you don’t need a visa and won’t even need your passport. Instead, head to Miami and visit Little Havana where you can enjoy a big helping of Cuban history and culture.

In 2000 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 2017 the National Trust for Historic Preservation declared this social, cultural and political center a national treasure.

The area near downtown known as Little Havana is where Cuban refugees began settling after Fidel Castro came to power in the 1960s, turned the country into a Communist state and began governmentalizing everything from businesses and industries to private holdings.

Benches are arranged around the edges of the pavilion for spectating. Even the sidewalk is decorated with dominoes.

Just a short distance up Eighth Street is the Paseo de los Estrellas, which is Little Havana’s own Walk of Fame that includes Latin American actors, writers, artists and musicians such as Gloria Estefan, Celia

Cruz and Willy Chirino, whose stars are embedded in the sidewalk.

This area, (Eighth Street between 14th and 17th avenues) is the headquarters for the free Calle Ocho Festival which has been held on the last Friday of every month for the past four decades. It features outdoor music on 30 stages, street musicians, art exhibits, hundreds of vendors, educational programs at historic Tower Theater and free walking tours led by Miami historian Dr. Paul George at 7 p.m.

On Friday, March 13, 1988, the

festival went into the Guinness Book of World Records by forming the world’s longest conga line that included 119,986 people.

Before taking a stroll through some of the neighborhoods that feature a variety of architecture ranging from bungalow and mission style to Miami modern and Mediterranean revival, drop into the visitor’s center at 1442 S.W. Eighth St. for information on the history and culture of the area.

Cuyohoga Valley National Park located in northeast Ohio between Cleveland and Akron covers about 50 square miles and is the only national park in the state. The Cuyohoga River runs through the park. Native Americans named the river Cuyohoga, meaning “crooked river.”

About 100 waterfalls are located in Cuyahoga Valley, with the most popular being 65’ tall Brandywine Falls. Easy to reach, sightseers can reach the waterfall on a wooden boardwalk hooked to a large parking area. Of course a trail is also accessible to the falls, thanks to the many nature routes abundant in the park. Visitors can hike the 20-mile Towpath trail which follows a former stretch of the Ohio and Erie canal.

The Everett Covered Bridge is the only remaining covered bridge in Summit County.

It was built sometime in the 1800s when the Ohio and Erie canal was used to ship products to bigger cities and bridges were needed to cross the canals. Ohio led the nation in covered bridge construction.

Learning to live with a family member with dementia %\ -(66,&$ 68%67$1/(< Hearing the news that a loved one has dementia isn’t devastating only for the individual diagnosed but also for the family. I am speaking from experience.

My father was diagnosed with dementia. He explained it as looking through a foggy windshield where he couldn’t get the wipers to clean the glass. I saw it as losing the person I knew as my dad.

I knew something was wrong with my dad as his mood changed. He was more on edge, worried about everything, and easily angered. I noticed not wanting to be in his presence.

Knowing now what I wish I had known then, I realize it was the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s.

Once I was able to let go of the fact that my dad’s memory was fading and our current relationship would be chang-

ing, I was able to accept the diagnosis of dementia more easily. Initially I was angry.

My thought was that I was his child, I shouldn’t be the one that had to adjust.

Growing up, I always saw my dad as the one making the sacrifices for his family. Despite my anger and denial of the situation, I quickly learned the tables had turned. I had to learn a new way to connect with my dad. I had to educate myself so I could learn a new way to be present in my dad’s life and have a relationship with him.

Finally, I hit upon the realization that he was still the same person I always knew, loved and respected. I just needed to learn his new limitations and adjust accordingly. Now, it would be up to his family to make sacrifices for him. Yes, our relationship was going to be different; I would no longer be able to have a

conversation seeking financial advice, tap his experience with marriage or parenthood, or even win a debate with my dad.

Instead, I learned how to adapt my actions to meet my dad’s needs. Connecting to existing community resources helped immensely. Among other things, I learned that reminiscing was a wonderful way to connect. Looking through photo albums, singing songs and enjoying the moment all worked remarkably well. I was able to establish a “new” relationship and appreciate the time I was able to be present with my dad.

I never took another moment with him for granted.
