It is a love story that began when Central High School students Reginald Grimm and Barbara Underly met at the high school’s gymnastics club. Sixty-six years later, their story is still evolving.

“He was very good at gymnastics, and we had mutual friends,” Barbara recalled.

Reginald was three years older than Barbara. Their first date was a hay ride, a suggestion made by a friend. They dated throughout high school and college, marrying in 1955 in a traditional ceremony at Holy Cross Church.

Reginald earned a degree in chemical engineering and earned a master’s degree in chemistry from Notre Dame.

He was initially recruited to attend Notre Dame to join the university’s gymnastics club. After graduation, his career took him away from home often to visit plant operations in locations around the globe.

Barbara taught dance and gymnastics at the YWCA and in school systems in the region. She also owned a bridal shop, Formal Elegance, for about 10 years.

The couple raised five children: three sons and two daughters.

Their oldest child, Kenneth, died from injuries in a car accident on Bremen Highway in 1995. Their other children, Mike, Pam, Scott and Katrina, grew up in the South Continued on page 3

Robinson makes a change for the better %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Much has been made in the press about the “Big Resignation of 2021,” as unprecedented numbers of Americans quit their jobs in the hopes of finding better pay, more benefits or, for some, a more fulfilling occupation.

South Bend’s Marie Robinson was a little ahead of the curve in 2019 when she chose to leave her front office job in the health care field. Since September 2020 she has held the position of office manager for St. Vincent de Paul Society Center; however, for much of the past year and a half most of her time has been spent as “point person” for the distribution of Emergency Rental Assistance funds.

“I was at a bit of a crossroads professionally,” said Robinson,

and even though she had held the position for four years and had made “great friends,” she could not shake the belief it was time to make a change.

“Faith played a big part in the change,” said Robinson, who was “born and raised” in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. “After a lot of prayer and reflection I decided it was the best course of action.”

Her faith was rewarded. “Looking back, it’s the best thing I did for myself.” For one, Robinson is one of the few people she knows who has never had COVID-19.

And she has since lost one of her former health care coworkers to the virus. “It’s heartbreaking seeing that happen to someone who was there to help others.”

After a few assignments through an employment agency, Robinson was hired by St.

Jan. 14, 2022, marked the deadline for applications, and to date the nonprofit has distributed $3.5 million in rental assistance, with $10 million in the county as a whole. “I’m very proud of the fact we were able to contribute what we did,” she stated.

Robinson grew up in South Bend and graduated from John Adams High School before completing an undergraduate degree in Illinois. Now her work is directly benefitting the community in which she was raised. “I’m happy to be here and help those I’ve grown up with.”

Their son’s death was one of the challenges the Grimms faced. That was followed by another accident, three years to the day after their son’s death. Reginald was hurt when another driver pulling up behind him at the gas station pinned him against the back of his vehicle. Most of his small intestine was removed because of the accident. He had been given 50/50 chance of surviving, Barbara said.

“There’s ups and downs in a marriage,” Barbara said.

“Faith has seen us through all of this.”

The Grimms cite their faith in giving them the strength and guidance to persevere. That is one piece of advice they would offer to others — use religious faith to not give up and bear with the problems.

“Remember the good times through the bad times,” she said.

Other than their faith and devotion to their vows, being reasonable and willing to talk over disagreements has served this couple well.

“Be reasonable,” Reginald said when disagreements occur. “Don’t think that you are always right. Cave in once in a while.”

Family is important to

the Grimms. They are in close contact with their children, 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. It is these close-knit relationships that provide support when a problem comes along, Barbara said.

Barbara admires her husband’s devotion to their family and how supportive he is of their children and grandchildren. He was also good to her parents.

“He is soft in some ways and hard in ways,” she said.

“Barbara has continued to be and act in the same way as she did when we got married,” Reginald said.

“Those things that attracted me in the first place are still with her.”

Snooze dog, never a problem Something curious is happening to me. I hope it’s not anything to be too concerned about. I’m not napping ,1 $ as much as 1876+(// I used to. %\ ',&. :2/)6,( For most of my life, if I was on the couch watching a TV show, I’d nod off within five minutes. But a couple of weeks back, I was awake through an entire Colts game. That particular game, even the Colts couldn’t say that.

Napping has never been a problem. When I was a high school teacher, I actually fell asleep in class while proctoring a statewide exam. The kids were very polite. “I hope we didn’t disturb you yesterday, Mr. Wolfsie,” said one of my students. “We tried to cheat as quietly as we could.”

Up until recently, I could take a quick snooze while having dinner with friends, at red lights, while waiting for my wife to put on makeup, as the dog was relieving himself, at fast food drive-up windows, in check-out lines.

Anywhere.

As a result of grabbing the occasional 40 winks, I have missed a few events that in retrospect I probably should have stayed awake for. Here are the top three: 1. My 70th birthday party (I wish they had screamed “Surprise!” louder) 2. Paris

Personally, I think women are afraid they’re going to miss something. Like a sale, or a beautiful sunset, or the plot of a movie. Men don’t care about stuff like this.

On the rare occasion that Mary Ellen has fallen asleep during the day, she would awaken with an apology and an explanation of her behavior. “I don’t know what happened. I must be coming down with something!”

I always had a different attitude when awakening from a short slumber: “Man, that was a great. I’m getting better and better at this all the time.”

My inability to nap recently came up during my last annual physical, but there was some confusion in the conversation. “How are you sleeping?” asked Dr. Ross, a pretty standard inquiry by a primary care provider.

“It’s been rough,” I told him. “Sometimes I’m awake for 8-10 hours in a row.”

“Ten hours?” he gasped.

“We need to do some testing. How long has this been going on?”

“Several months.”

“Do you just toss and turn in bed?”

“Well, I’m not in bed.

That’s the problem. I’m out driving the car, watching the news, cooking. Sometimes I’m in the garage operating heavy machinery.”

“This is very troubling, Dick. So you don’t sleep all night?”

“No, I sleep great at night.

It’s all day that I can’t sleep.”

Dr. Ross was very helpful once I straightened out the misunderstanding. He said I had to accept that men experience changes in their bodily rhythms as they mature. “I want you to go home this afternoon and really think about that,” he said.

I told him I’d have to sleep on it. Which meant, of course, it would have to wait until that night.

family’s historic mansion, Copshaholm.

Pleuss began volunteering at the mansion in 2019.

His wife, Kate, also a retired educator, had suggested it might be a good fit for her newly retired husband. The couple married in 1983.

A native of Wisconsin, Pleuss taught school in Tulsa, Okla., before moving to Granger to accept a teaching job. He spent 37 years as an educator and administrator in Granger, resulting in a 42year career in education.

He is one of the many volunteers at the museum.

Pleuss recognizes that his role allows the museum’s staff to work on running the facility and creating new and exciting visitor experiences.

“We are told they couldn’t do this without volunteers,” Pleuss said.

He volunteers about two or three times per week and occasionally signs up for additional hours to help take school children on field trips through the 38-room mansion. It is fun to lead tours through the mansion, he said, and Pleuss said he enjoys interacting with the museum’s guests.

“I really enjoy meeting people from different parts of the country,” he said. “We get people from all over the world here.”

Pleuss has always been interested in history. While in college, he took courses in history and is still an avid reader of history books. His favorite book is “The Good Years” by author Walter Lord, which focuses on the early 20th century.

When he is not volunteering, Pleuss spends his time puttering around the threeacre property he and his wife own. That’s the benefit of retirement, Pleuss said. “You can say I will do this today, or do it tomorrow.”

Pleuss said that process includes reading about the history of the Oliver family, studying information about the mansion and the contents of the rooms, shadowing another docent and being tested on what that person has learned.

Once a volunteer is “on your own,” the tour the docent leads becomes more natural, Pleuss said. He describes his tour style as laid back. While much of the tours include the same information, each docent brings a different focus and personal-

ity to the tours they lead, he said. And everyone has a favorite room or artifact.

His is the den, which is set up exactly as it was when the mansion was used by the family.

Pleuss encourages retirees to see if The History Museum is the right fit for them.

World War II, 1943 —

The Navy Midshipmen and Notre Dame Editor’s Note: This is the second part of a series.

%\ 3$6725 *5(* /$:621 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU Journey back with me to the campus of Notre Dame University and a World War II love story that flows forth from 12 letters written by a Navy midshipman who was in training at least from July to September 1943.

From my WWII collection, we learn of a lonely midshipmen and his letters to a young lady who is either his girlfriend or fiance.

We begin on “Thursday, 7:05, July 15, Dearest Marion. I have been quite happy ever since you called, hearing your voice having cheered me up.” Mack would end this four-page letter as follows: “I’ll live until next weekend and I’ll reserve a room for you in the Oliver Hotel for next Saturday.”

Marion would travel to South Bend depot on the New York Central Railroad to the waiting arms of her special Navy man.

Skipping forward to “Sunday, July 22, 4 p.m.,” we find this romantic love story continuing: “Darling, twenty-four hours ago I was racing madly toward the Oliver Hotel, on a city bus, to see you. But now, only twentyfour hours after that wonderful moment when I first saw you, I am without you again. I looked forward to seeing you for so long and so intensely that I can’t make myself believe that it is all over with. Leaving you at the station was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.”

Now we come to “Monday, Aug. 2, 1943,” where we find Mack right in the middle of exam week. The following Saturday, Mack looks forward to receiving liberty after the “Captain’s inspection,” and if all went well, he tells Marion that “I believe that I will go into Chicago

This Aug. 2 letter is the first time Mack writes of marriage to Marion: “Perhaps after we get married and the war is over, I will let you get a job while I lay around for a year or two catching up on my sleep.” Mack is just kidding, but remember, during his

Navy training at Notre Dame, he didn’t get much sleep time.

This temporarily ends the romantic love story of Mack and Marion. The story shall continue in the March issue as there is so much more to tell.

‘Is this all there is to it, Mommy?’

One toasty day in the summer of 1959, New York songwriter Paul Vance took his family to Long %\ 5$1'$/ Island’s & +,// Lido Beach.

There his wife, Margie, surprised their nine-year-old daughter Paula with a bikini bathing suit. Paula’s reaction: “Is this all there is to it, Mommy?” The youngster changed in the Lido’s public locker but felt embarrassed about her new swimwear. She was eventually coaxed out, but when she eased into the water, her bathing costume bottom soon slipped off.

Paula was understandably mortified. But an hour after the family returned home, her enterprising father, always on the lookout for a new song idea, used the embarrassing moment to write the lyrics to a silly novelty. Vance then passed them to his songwriting partner, Lee Pockriss, who quickly worked up a snappy melody. The result was the million-selling 1960 single, “Itsy Bitsy Tee-

nie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” by 17-year-old Brian Hyland.

That hit marked a breakthrough in America’s inevitable acceptance of a oncescandalous swimwear item.

Two years later, in “Dr. No,” the first James Bond flick, Ursula Andress caused jaws to drop worldwide when she emerged from the sea in a clinging twopiece. The next year, voluptuous ex-Mouseketeer Annette Funicello appeared in one (to the chagrin of Walt Disney) in “Beach Party.” In 1964, Sports Illustrated published its first swimsuit edition, a stunning bikini-clad model adorning its cover.

The skimpy beachwear as we know it has actually been around since July 1946, when it first appeared at a poolside fashion show in Paris. So scandalous was the design that the fashion models who were scheduled to debut it refused to wear the daringly cut item, which was made from a meager 30 inches of fabric and showed (horrors) the female belly button. As a result, the designer instead hired a 19-year-old stripper named Micheline Bernardini. She was photographed

later holding a matchbox to show that the new swimsuit could be stuffed inside.

The international news in 1946 included reports of the U.S. testing atomic bombs on the remote Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The adjective “atomic” was often used to describe anything intense, and, in less politically correct times (sorry, ladies), attractive women were often called “bombshells,” which was a forerunner of the term “sex symbol.” So it made sense that, in that year, two competing French designers, Jacque Heim and Louis Reard, dubbed their ultra-brief outfits atome and le bikini, respectively.

During the later ‘40s, seaside dress codes began to loosen.

Film stars Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, Rita Hayworth and Esther Williams frequently appeared in two-piece costumes.

In 1956, French sexpot Brigette Bardot caused a sensation in her skimpy two-piece in the film “And God Created Woman.” But it was Brian Hyland’s 1960 ear candy that, along with shifting social mores and increasing independence for women, helped knock down remaining barriers to make

While most of us know you can make a salad by simply adding oil and vinegar, you can make more flavorful dressings just as easily. For balsamic vinaigrette, combine a pinch of salt and pepper with two teaspoons of Dijon mustard, and one minced clove of garlic with 1/3 cup of balsamic vinegar, then whisk this mixture slowly into a half cup of olive oil.

And why is her apartment manager threatening to take her to court if she won’t pay $1,048 in back rent?

I’m hoping you can help me with a situation I am having with my apartment management company. I’m a college senior. I recently moved out of student housing and into my own apartment at the Allure apartment complex, which is a property of Greystar Real Estate.

My rent was $1,886 plus utilities every month, and when I got a dog in March of 2020, the rent went up by $50 a month. I’ve always paid my rent on time through the resident portal and I have never had any problems with the other residents or apartment management.

My parents and I agreed that we would sign a year lease last February so I would not be stressed about moving during finals and the holidays of 2021.

I assumed I would get a new

&+5,6723+(5 (//,277 lease notification via email or in my resident portal account, as that is how all communication with Allure has occurred.

On July 13, I received an email from Allure that I was going month to month starting on July 13 and would now

be charged an extra $157 a month. The company agreed to prorate July. A couple of hours later I received another email saying that I had been month to month since February and so they were charging me $157 a month in back rent as well.

After numerous emails and attempts to resolve this issue, Allure management has sent me a notice saying I have 15 days to pay the back rent plus late fees or they will start legal proceedings. I feel like they know that hiring a lawyer is expensive, so they just think I will pay it. If there is anything you can do to assist me, I would really appreciate it. I’d like to get $1,048 in back rent removed from my account. — Kate Syverson, Orange, Calif.

You should have signed a new lease, which would have kept your rent payments at $1,886 plus utilities. Instead,

it looks like you assumed that your rate would not change if and when you moved to a month-to-month lease. But it did.

Allure waited until July to adjust your monthly rental rate, but it then appears to have also retroactively adjusted your rate. It should have offered to fix the problem instead of threatening to take you to court — although, as you suggested, the threat was likely a form letter generated when your rent is overdue.

The fix for this is easy, in retrospect. Make sure you sign all the paperwork for your apartment lease well in advance. I understand Allure typically communicated through its website portal, but it looks like this time it didn’t.

I asked Allure to review your case.

“This resident did not renew

her lease, so she was put on a month-to-month status as a result of that,” a spokeswoman said. “The team is going to talk to the property owner and to her and see if we can work out a resolution.”

Allure reached out to you.

The blame for this is definitely shared. You know you should have been more proactive about the rental contract. But Allure should have also contacted you sooner. And that business with retroactively charging rent and then threatening you — not a shining example of good customer service. Allure offered to split the difference with you, which leaves you with $524 due.

Bowling is a sport for all ages %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Blake Gavros has been bowling for roughly 40 years, and much of that time has been spent at South Bend Bowlers Country Club where he is currently president. For him, bowling is an ideal way to “unwind,” and he is a vocal advocate for the sport as the perfect activity for all ages, seniors in particular.

Bowling “mimics” golf in the way it provides an outlet for camaraderie as well as competition, Gavros explained. “It’s a way to have fun, catch up and vent.”

From his mid-twenties until his forties, Gavros maintained a 200 average, bowling four or five nights every week. “I’ve bowled in every house in this

area, and a few you never knew were there,” he exclaimed.

Much of that time was spent with his first wife Linda, a 150 bowler. “It was something we could do together,” he recalled, before cancer took her life a decade ago.

Again, Gavros stressed the similarities with golf. Handicapping, he said, “makes it easy for two different styles of bowlers to compete and still have fun.” An accomplished bowler must still bowl well to win.

He has come to understand this first hand after five knee surgeries and back problems have brought his average down to 130 or so. “Accept your abilities for what they are and you will still have just as much fun.”

In fact, Gavros’ sister Rhonda, who lives in Chicago,

took up bowling in her sixties.

“She now bowls in a league daily … it gets her out of the house and out with the girls.

She enjoys it.”

In his prime, Gavros was what he calls a “speed bowler,” and at one time he reckoned he possessed one of the hardest throws in the area. That said, his encyclopedic knowledge of local bowlers quickly conjures the names of several who threw harder and more accurately, including one nicknamed “Revs.”

Gavros emphasized how even the very best bowlers are

usually quick to lend a hand.

“Everybody wants to help everybody.”

In addition to the physical challenges of bowling, maintaining proper technique and finding the right weight of ball, bowling’s intricacies also extend to the lane itself. The oil pattern — where it is dry and wet — and even the age of the pins — how hard or soft they are — all comes into play. “The ball reacts differently when the wood becomes soft,” Gavros observed.

Currently, Gavros is also helping oversee a five-year remodeling process at the club, which is taking these elements into account. His various

responsibilities keep him at the club upwards of 30 hours a week on top of his job driving a truck.

Bowling has helped Gavros through tough times, including after his wife died. “I needed something to get me out of the house,” he remembered, and bowling was “a ray of sunshine.”

Now, Gavros is engaged to be married. He and his fiance, Shelly Speakman, bowl together in a mixed league every Saturday night.

Though his scores may not be what they used to be, Gavros said, “I still have a lot of knowledge to impart … and I still razz the better players.”

A feeling of helplessness seems to have dropped around us as we either dig deeper into our credit card debt or decide to bypass the purchase.

There is a way you can save a few bucks on your shopping trips. It goes under several names — negotiate, haggle and make a lower bid are just a few.

But the simple way is just ask.

Many vendors, major and minor, offer discounts to veterans and to seniors. But you usually have to ask. In many cases, such as seasonal close-out sales, shops will accept a price lower than advertised.

This is not as easy in major chains, but if you ask for the store manager, you can deal directly with him or her.

Recently, a relative was lounging around a jewelry store while his wife had a dental appointment. Several items had

luxurious price tags but there were a few “deals” in one corner counter. A wristwatch caught his eye so, to pass the time and since he didn’t have a wristwatch at the time, he asked to take a closer look at it.

The sales clerk told him it was the last of a particular lot and that was why it was so cheap. The sale price was $140.

That ended the conversation.

He thanked the clerk and put it back, sauntered around the store a bit more and then walked out. Seconds out the door, the clerk called after him and asked how much he’d pay for the watch. My neighbor blurted out, “I have $100 in my pocket.” The clerk asked him to wait a minute and came back to tell him her manager would take it.

He bought the watch and, checking its costs online when he got home, his watch was etailing at more than $700.

Acting like he didn’t want it cut his price without even haggling.

A nettlesome cost these days is the monthly cable/internet bill, which can top $200 a month if you opt for multi-cable

service and high-speed internet service.

If you feel you’d like to lower the cost of your existing service, call and tell them you want to cancel your subscription. You’re likely to be connected with a company representative whose job is to keep customers and has all the latest promotional programs and fees at his or her fingertips.

Rather than complain about the lack of service for the price you’re paying, be nice. Point out you really appreciate what you’re getting but just can’t afford it on your income and budget.

You don’t have to accept the first offer. You might point out you’re a senior and will have to shop around for a plan you can afford. And if you find one, you’d like to sign up for a longterm program so you don’t have to interrupt your service every few months.

All of this is designed to help the company rep you’re speaking with come up with the best program that suits you and keeps you on their list of customers.

While the term “wandering” may suggest aimless movement, individuals who wander have a destination and a purpose. To reduce the risk of wandering, ensure all basic needs are met, including toileting, nutrition and hydration. Consider reducing, but not eliminating, liquids up to two hours before bedtime so the person doesn’t have to use and find the bathroom during the night.

If a family member does wander and get lost, begin a search immediately. Start by searching the immediate vicinity, including “less-traveled” areas in the home. Outside the home, search the yard and nearby surroundings. Most wanderers are found within a half mile of their homes or starting location.

If, after 15 minutes, the person is not located, call 911 to file a missing person’s report. Ensure a swift response by alerting the police that the individual has Alzheimer’s disease and is a “vulnerable adult.”

Make daylight last. Winter months bring decreased sunlight and shorter days. Visual perception can be a challenge for those living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, and can cause increased confusion or disorientation in dark or shadowy environments both inside and out.

Turn on indoor lights earlier or install timers, open curtains during daylight hours, and consider installing motion detector lights to help illuminate walkways around the home, as darkness may fall before arriving home from an outing.

Buddy up. It can be hard for caregivers to find time to complete simple tasks outside of the home. Caregivers will often find friends and family are eager to help, so don’t hesitate to ask others for assistance with errands, grocery shopping or with snow and ice removal.

Prevent wandering. Wandering is one of the most frequent and challenging problems caregivers face.

Alzheimer’s Association offers tips for dementia caregivers Winter weather conditions — colder temperatures, snow and ice and early darkness — can be particularly challenging and stressful for the 215,000 dementia caregivers in Indiana. The Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter is offering the following tips for keeping loved ones safe: Be prepared. Winter storms can be dangerous. Check weather conditions regularly and have emergency plans in place.

Tackle to-do lists in one trip to avoid making multiple trips.

Bundle up. If delaying trips is not an option, help the person living with Alzheimer’s dress warmly for winter weather conditions by wearing dry, loose-fitting layers and covering exposed skin. Make sure the person you are caring for wears clothing that covers as much exposed skin as possible. Mittens keep hands warmer than gloves and may be easier to help get on and off.

Prevent slips. Balance and mobility can be a challenge for a person living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Assume all surfaces are slick and assist the person by taking smaller steps and slowing down, so they can match gait and speed to a safer level.

Perception problems can make it difficult for the person living with Alzheimer’s or dementia to see ice on sidewalks or realize ice is slippery or snow is not a solid surface. Keep sidewalks and driveways clear to make walking outside safer for everyone. Utilize handrails or walk arm-in-arm when possible. Use indoor or garage parking and consider acquir-

Maciulski finds faith and community in River Park %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Janet Maciulski has lived her entire life in the River Park neighborhood of South Bend, where she also attends River Park United Methodist Church. Much of her time is spent volunteering at both the church and neighborhood organizations, and so many of her activities seem to embody Jesus’ call to “Love thy neighbor as yourself.”

“From very early we had a church family that was supportive in good times and bad,” she recalled. One way she has carried on this tradition is through the church’s food pantry, where for the last two years she has volunteered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Sundays. More workers were needed, she explained, when distribution was moved outside as a result of COVID-19.

“I hate to think of anyone being hungry,” Maciulski commented, a sentiment she relates to the Golden Rule: treating others as we would like to be treated. Maciulski

said Busy Hands, a women’s service group, also operates in the church, knitting hats and scarves to help keep pantry clients warm.

From a young age Maciulski has also found inspiration in the hymns and songs of the church. “Our music touches the soul,” she said. “Learning the songs leads you to understand Jesus, God, the Trinity and love.” Some of her favorites include “The Old Rugged Cross,” “How Great Thou Art” and “In The Garden,” and she shares her love of these songs with children on Sundays in junior church and with the junior choir. Recently, she has also enjoyed RPUMC’s musical director’s regular articles on the history of the hymns she has sung since her youth.

Maciulski has been a special education teacher at Southside School in Niles, Mich. for 46 years. “I’m still going because I love it.” However, at junior church, she also imparts religious education through songs, arts and crafts and puppets.

But Maciulski’s love of her neighbors is not confined to

the church. She is a neighborhood watch captain and is also involved with her neighborhood association, which, she says, “tries to do things for the common good,” including food drives and clean-up initiatives.

The association newsletter is hand-delivered to over 2,000 people, paid for by advertisements by local businesses.

“We have a lot of things other small neighborhoods don’t have,” Maciulski commented, a fact she attributes, in part, to the close proximity of Notre Dame University’s campus and Potawatomi Zoo, as well as Potawatomi’s conservatories.

Maciulski is also president of the Botanical Society of South Bend.

Maciulski credits her mother’s early influence for instilling her deep faith in Jesus and his teachings, as well as her community involvement.

In fact, RPUMC’s kitchen is named “Jean’s Kitchen” in her mother’s honor after she oversaw it for many years. “She was a good mentor for me, and I’ve tried to pass these things on to my children.”

Studebaker Museum receives 1964 Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk The Studebaker National Museum recently received a 1964 Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk as a gift to its permanent collection.

The Hawk was formerly owned by Brooks Stevens, an industrial designer who handled Studebaker’s styling program from 1962 to 1964.

After falling sales in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Studebaker considered discontinuing the Hawk after the 1961 model year. New Studebaker President Sherwood Egbert, however, felt the Hawk was a key part of Studebaker’s lineup and commissioned the Milwaukeebased Stevens to redesign the Hawk for 1962.

Working on a minimal budget, Stevens gave the new

Gran Turismo Hawk a more formal and upscale appearance. He eliminated the 1961 Hawk’s tail fins and added a Thunderbird-inspired squaredoff roofline. The new silhouette combined with a redesigned interior gave Studebaker’s aging Hawk a new lease on life.

The museum’s new Hawk was a gift from Ron and Betty DeWinter of Mishawaka. It was purchased new by Stevens and equipped with the optional black vinyl “sport roof,” supercharged R2 engine, disc brakes and powershift automatic transmission. It was part of Stevens’ private museum in Mequon, Wis. The DeWinters acquired the car when the Stevens’ collection was sold in the early 1990s.

Centuries transform French hill towns

Our first hill town, one of more than a dozen within an hour’s drive of Pernes, was Gordes, touted to be one of the 100 Most Beautiful Villages in France. Its stone buildings enveloped by stone walls dating back to the 11th century overlook vast vineyards.

From Gordes, it’s an easy drive to Roussillon, a town shrouded in a combination of red, maroon, orange, terra cotta and yellow reflected from nearby ochre cliffs.

The next town, Menerbes,

On our first morning in Provence, France, we left to explore Pernes-les-Fontaines, a 10-minute walk from our cozy 100-year-old two-story farmhouse we would call home for two weeks.

Such is the attraction of Untours, which offers unusual accommodations in multiple cities in more than a dozen European countries.

It can be a castle, a vineyard or a delightful old house like ours to live like a local.

There is a supermarket near Pernes, but it was so much more French to stop at the butcher, baker, cheese

is another of the 100 Most Beautiful Villages in France and hometown of Peter Mayle, Legion d’Honneur recipient and author of the renowned “My Year in Provence.” It is quieter and more subdued than Gordes, with wider streets.

When visiting these charming small towns, park in the lots outside of town. Don’t even think about driving in these towns with streets narrow enough to touch the walls with your outstretched arms.

Whatever the village, it’s always a good idea to stroll off the main square to see where the people really live.

There was a lot more life in this ghost town — it was Sunday and everything was closed — than we thought. The next day, when visiting a favorite restaurant, our waiter smilingly led us to “your usual table.” Voila, we belonged.

Avignon was a different experience. A big walled city from the 14th century, the operative word there is big.

Massive medieval monuments dominate the square — churches, palaces, municipal buildings and amphitheaters.

We took special note of the

Palais de la Papes, which was the center of the papacy in the early 14th century before it returned permanently back to Rome.

As my husband’s eyes were beginning to glaze over at the thought of another hill town, we mixed up our days with a local hike, and visits to a museum, farmer’s market and festival of bulls in Saint Remy.

When planning our next day’s adventures, we picked up a baguette and cheese from the market to accompany another glass of wine before dining al fresco at our arbor-covered, gardenenclosed picnic table.

Call it telemedicine or telehealth, it’s the future of doctor-patient relationships and it’s already arrived.

The use of telehealth has exploded during the COVID-19 pandemic and there is no longer any question within and without the medical community that telemedicine is here to stay.

While face-to-face visits with primary-care physicians and specialists are expected to continue for critical cases, chronic care will no longer call for a patient to get a ride to the doctor’s office. Everything will be handled by phone or computer.

This could also be part of a growing problem, because it’s difficult to reach a real person by phone anymore, even to make appointments.

After an annual visit to a specialist monitoring his liver condition, a relative was told to make appointments for an ultrasound reading and a blood test. The blood test appointment had to be made online and it took several sessions with a computerized voice to get called by a person to make the ultrasound appointment.

A computerized phone call notified him the results of the test were posted on the patient portal in his computer.

He had to read — and translate — the results himself. He assumed everything was routine because the doctor, or his

assistant, would call if there were any problems or peril.

After all, isn’t that what telemedicine is all about?

That opens up the whole world for you to get a second opinion by checking your symptoms on the internet.

This can be dangerous because much of the information out there is unreliable.

It may make for interesting reading, but you need to see your doctor for a dependable diagnosis. Once you’ve met with him or her, telemedicine can be used for follow-up and treatment.

Connecting through cyberspace means you always have a medical babysitter at your elbow. When an issue erupts, a quick contact with your caregiver will let you know how to respond.

‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ originated in 1939 in South Africa as ‘Mbube’ Robert John The first time the world heard of Brooklynborn Robert John was in 1958, when he was 12 years old.

Back then, $ %RRPHU %ODVW the singing 7R 7KH 3DVW youngster %\ 5$1'$/ was going & +,// by his real name: Bobby Pedrick, Jr. An appearance on TV’s American Bandstand — occasionally the ticket to stardom for a struggling unknown — showcased his “White Bucks and Saddle Shoes,” a catchy

but forgettable Big Top Records ditty. It struggled nationally to a lowly No. 79 slot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Similar teen-oriented followups — “Pajama Party,” “Summer Nights” — sank without a trace.

Five years later, as the lead singer of doo-wopping Bobby and the Consoles, Pedrick recorded another adolescentoriented 45, a silly piece of fluff called “My Jelly Bean” on the Diamond label. With surf and hot rod records roaring up the 1963 singles charts, doowop was in its death throes.

“My Jelly Bean” earned some East Coast airplay but not enough to make it a national hit. Pedrick and his pals never earned a second invitation into Diamond’s recording studio.

But Pedrick proved tenacious and felt in his heart that his distinctive and powerful voice would prove to be his ticket to the top of the Billboard charts someday. Maybe he would even reach Number One? During the ‘60s, he drifted from label to label, leaving behind a few failed singles at each stop. Later in the decade, he changed his stage name to Robert John (John being his middle name). He then turned to songwriting for such established artists as Bobby Vinton and Lou Rawls.

John signed with Atlantic Records in 1971 and drew closer to making his lifelong dream a reality when he recorded “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” which rose to No. 3

on the Hot 100.

The song is one of those tunes that seems to have been around forever, with various renditions being released as “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and by its earlier title “Wimoweh.”

The tune has actually been a worldwide standard since 1939, when it had been created and first recorded as “Mbube” (Zulu for “lion”).

The song had been written in South Africa by a 30-year-old factory worker named Solomon Linda, who packed 78-rpm discs and swept the floors for the Gallo Record Company. On weekends, he performed with his vocal group, The Evening Birds. One particular crowd favorite was his “Mbube,” which incorporated a call-andresponse pattern, well known

to the Zulus and common in Black churches everywhere.

Solomon utilized an underlying chant and a meshing of male voices, with countertenor leader Linda yodeling and howling throughout.

Gallo had The Evening Birds record the tune. During the third taping, Solomon improvised the melody that would become familiar to audiences internationally. “Mbube” sold 100,000 copies and made Linda a star, although he would die in poverty later, with $22 to his name. His contribution to music has lived on, though, through such groups as Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

As for Robert John? In 1979, he released his final hit, “Sad Eyes,” which rocketed all the way to No. 1

Hoover Historical Center will ‘sweep’ you away Believe it or not.

There’s actually a museum for vacuum cleaners. It’s located in North Canton, Ohio, where the *5($7 Hoover Com(6&$3(6 pany manu7H[W $QG 3KRWRV factured %\ 52' .,1* electric suction sweepers between 1908 and 2008. Through the decades it was the most recognized name in floor care. In fact, instead of saying they were going to sweep the floors, most people who had one, simply said they were going to “Hoover.”

Hoover didn’t invent the vacuum cleaner, but invested in James Murray Spangler’s 1807 cleaning device invention.

When he couldn’t get financing for his idea, Spangler went to William H. (Boss) Hoover, who immediately saw the genius in the instrument and agreed to manufacture it. On Aug. 8, 1908, the new Electric Suction Sweeper Company was incorporated with W. H. Hoover as president and treasurer and his eldest son, Herbert. W. Hoover, as secretary and general manager. Spangler was an active partner and oversaw sweeper construction. The name was officially changed to the Hoover Company in 1922 with H. W. as president. The 100th anniversary of the first Hoover vacuum was celebrated in 2008.

Hoover’s first portable electric cleaner weighed 40 pounds and included a 25-pound Westinghouse motor. The attached dirt bag was lined with an inner bag made of cheesecloth.

Though it wasn’t the first electric cleaner on the market, it’s considered the first commercially successful portable electric vacuum. The Model O sold for $60 plus another $15 for the dusting tool attachments. Between Au-

That early success prompted them to change the name to The Hoover Suction Sweeper Company the following year. It was owned by the Hoover family until the 1940s, when it became publicly owned. Its stock was first traded on Aug. 6, 1943.

With only 10% of the population having electric service at the time, door-to-door salesmen had to work extra hard to meet their 40-calls-a-day quota. The company gave them large metal

rings so they wouldn’t bruise their knuckles knocking on all those doors. Hoover became the market leader with a full line of floor care products that included upright and canister vacuum cleaners, stick cleaners, handheld cleaners, extractors, central vacuum systems, floor polishers and more. The vacuum cleaner is considered to be among the top 100 inventions of the 20th century.

Hoover Historical Center is located on original Hoover family farmland and is actually the boyhood home of W. H. Hoover.

Inside the 1853 Victorian-Italianate farmhouse are highlights of the company’s history, from its roots as a regional leather goods manufacturer to a global leader in floor care products and its significant contributions to the World War II effort. During the war, Hoover retooled to manufacture plastic helmet liners and variable time fuses. In 1940 the company arranged to evacuate children of Hoover employees at its plant in Perivale, England.

Maple sugar tapping scheduled Maple-sugaring activities are scheduled to begin Saturday, Feb. 19, at Bendix Woods County Park, 56960 Timothy Road, New Carlisle. Trees will be tapped for the upcoming sugaring season.

The public is invited to join park staff and volunteers to help drill holes in the trees and install the tubing system, which allows the trees’ sap to flow directly to the sugar house. Volunteers may also help clean sap storage tanks, split and stack firewood, and clean the sugar house.

Tapping activities will begin at 10 a.m. at the Sauk Trail Shelter. The park will provide tapping bits, drills and other tools. Dress for the weather. The event is free, but advanced registration is required by calling (574) 654-3155.
