We’ve had a long, cold, dreary winter and now that spring has arrived, it’s time to get outside and enjoy it.

Northwest Indiana is home to beautiful recreational areas, parks, lakes, trails and more and you could easily find a new scenic spot to explore every day of the season without duplication. One place that should be on your radar is Wolf Lake Memorial Park in Hammond.

The lake itself spans two states. It’s an 804-acre body of water that sits between Hammond in Indiana and Chicago’s Hegewisch community on the Illinois side.

The Indiana Toll Road runs over the middle of the lake.

If you visit the Indiana side,

you’ll find Wolf Lake Memo Memorial Park at 2324 Calumet Avenue, which is overseen by the Hammond Port Authority.

The lake has canoe, kayak and stand-up paddle board rentals available daily, weather and event permitting, for $10 per hour. Paddlers can also launch their own crafts from the south entrance of Wolf Lake. Windsurfing is a popular sport at the site and even if you are not a participant, sitting back as a spectator is quite entertaining and relaxing.

The park has a trail for walking and biking that can take you around the entirety of the Indiana portion and into Illinois and also links to Hammond Marina. It is part of a 7-mile pedestrian

d bik th greenway th and bike path thatt links Lake Michigan and Robersdale’s inland bodies of water.

The pavilion at Wolf Lake Memorial Park is a 2,600-square-foot main stage with 86,000-square-feet of concrete and grass for seating that hosts a number concerts and activities — everything from performances of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra to the Festival of the Lakes to the WHAM! Bike Ride to the 4th of July Naturalization Ceremony.

Retired steelworker has enjoyed his rewarding second career with United Way %\ &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU After working in the steel industry for 41 years, Pete Smith wasn’t quite ready to retire and he’s found a meaningful role in a second career as the northwest Indiana labor liaison for United Way of Northwest Indiana. He has worked in that position for the past three years. A resident of East Chicago for the past 38 years, he values the opportunity to help connect people in his community and throughout the region with help that is needed.

His role involves connecting with union leaders and supporting and growing relationships between unions and their United Way.

“I also work with our community partners to stabilize families in NWI in new and innovative ways,” he said.

Smith’s college career was interrupted after three years when he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After his service, he started with Youngstown Sheet and Tube, which was later bought

by LTV Steel. His department was bought by U.S. Steel and in his time there, he began as a laborer and became a union representative and later was elected president of Steel Workers Local 5133 in East Chicago.

“In those 41 years, I have always promoted and donated to United Way Lake County in Indiana. I was fortunate that I never had to use any of the ser-

vices that United Way provides, though many of my family and friends were not as fortunate,” he said. “As things turned out, I was retiring around the same time the former labor liaison from United Way was retiring and I submitted my resume.”

It was perfect timing that allowed Smith to transition into a job where he could use his knowledge and experience to benefit others.

“The most rewarding part of my job is being able to direct people to resources and opportunities in their time of need,” said Smith. “For example, one in four families in northwest Indiana are struggling financially and our Level Up program was created to help struggling residents attain

greater financial stability. This includes access to job training or certification and employment support for people seeking better paying jobs, financial management coaching, affordable quality child care and basic needs support.

“This program is staffed by ‘navigators’ who walk alongside these residents as cheerleaders and accountability partners to assist the clients with financial stability and work with them on their financial goals.

They provide service referrals to overcome existing barriers, such as education, child care, transportation or technology access. United Way of NWI has partner agencies that will provide these services at no cost to the client.”

Divorce courted by all ages %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV The major reasons almost half of first marriages end in divorce are either emotional or economical.

And divorce among the elderly is rising, with two out of five married couples between 65 and 75 filing for splitting up.

A second marriage doesn’t seem to help because almost two-thirds of second marriages end in divorce.

If you’ve never been married, are married or divorced once, it may pay to be prepared for a marital split. Getting set emotionally probably isn’t as easy as taking some financial steps to soften the economic blow.

Long-ago neighbors decided to end their partnership when the wife returned to her childhood pastures, didn’t like how things changed and decided to head back to what had been the couple’s family home.

The husband made arrangements to give her the house, which had a minimal mortgage, one of their two cars they owned and split his corporate health and retirement benefits. He opted to keep a rental property they owned and the

other car.

On the advice of family and friends, the wife decided she wanted an attorney to handle her side of things. So the husband got one also and, as a result, the divorce court judge granted him the right to keep all of his health and pension benefits as well as all the property in the house she had left.

It’s been said that a truly fair agreement has been reached when both parties feel a bit bruised.

A recent trend has been exposing this truism more and more.

Courts are looking less favorably on spousal support.

The traditional view that the non-working wife and mother should receive financial support from the household wage earner has changed as divorce courts reason that almost every adult can make a living these days. Courts will usually order some financial accommodation for school-aged children, but the supporting trend stops there.

While child custody doesn’t affect most seniors who are getting divorced, it can affect older couples who have become caretakers of grandchildren.

Attitudes in these cases have

differed also. No longer is it a given that the person traditionally deemed to do the most child rearing — mom or grandma — will give given full custody.

These battles always affect the grandparents, because the time they will get to spend with their grandchildren is dictated by who gets custody.

Seniors splitting up can settle their financial argument simply and amicably by using the figures in their most recent tax return.

Seeking vengeance against a soon-to-be-ex can only end badly. Should you hope to punish the partner who has made your life miserable for decades by hiring a hard-nosed spitfire attorney will only force them to hire their own lawyer. And the two firebrands will spend your money cutting both of you up.

Another bubble to burst is that a partner’s infidelity has anything to do with the court’s decision on who should get what.

He’s a grandfather or “Paw Paw” to five grandchildren. A favorite hobby is fishing, and he enjoys bass fishing in May and salmon fishing in October.

Across from the park, you’ll find Lost Marsh Golf Course, which surrounds Lake George and offers a view of the Chicago Skyline. Try out the championship course, 9-hole executive course or the driving range. The Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired clubhouse features a top-shelf bar and grill, dining room and pro shop.

A new feature to the park is the painting of the Sheffield Pump Station. Jim Edge,

who works at the park’s guard shack, explained that an artist recently painted all four sides with images depicting activities at the park, including concerts, fishing, sports and swimming. He enjoys helping visitors to the park and giving directions and information.

His first task is security of the park, but he also has a dual role of serving as an ambassador for the park.

The hospital cancelled the bill %\ :22'52: :,/&2; One of my co-workers had a medical bill problem. It was not a Medicare problem. My friend is not on Medicare. The problem was caused partly by his Obamacare plan and partly by a mistake by the hospital staff.

The following is a paragraph of the letter to the hospital that I typed to help my co-worker and a paragraph of the letter from the

hospital to my co-worker: “I have tried to phone the insurance company, which is an Affordable Care Act insurance provider. When I have phoned, I get a message that I must wait at least 45 minutes to talk to someone. I can’t wait that long. That is just ‘badgering clients.’ What can we do? I am willing to cooperate with any ideas you have to contact the insurance company to get their attention to pay. I am

not ignoring your firm’s bill. I expected the insurance company to pay you.”

Here is a paragraph of the letter from the hospital to my co-worker: “It has been determined that due to your insurance information being entered incorrectly at the time of service and falling past the timely filing limit to file a claim to your insurance, we have

applied an administrative adjustment of $2,518.45 to your account bringing your balance to zero.”

My friend and co-worker is a client also. All the help I gave him was free of charge. Every client gets similar help with Medicare-related bill matters free of charge, too. This is how we demonstrate to our clients that we really do care about them. If your insurance agent or agency

doesn’t give this high level of customer service, why not switch to an insurance agency that does?

The Indiana State Library has announced the creation of the Indiana Digital Library, a new cooperative consortium of 199 libraries dedicated to expanding and enhancing access to digital materials for Indiana library patrons.

Jesse Butz, director of the Porter County Public Library System, and Stephanie Murphy, director of the New CarlisleOlive Township Public library, both leaders of the IDL development committee, worked closely with Indiana State Library to create the largest digital

consortium in Indiana history.

IDL’s collection will create access to expansive collections of patron-focused content, with low waiting periods for materials. The IDL, launched March 1, was formed in partnership with OverDrive, the leading digital reading platform for libraries and schools worldwide.

According to Butz, “The Indiana Digital Library will be a crucial resource for library users across the state of Indiana, and the consortium structure will help libraries dramatically expand their offerings while

being a good steward of their patron’s tax dollars.”

The IDL’s content will be developed and maintained by volunteers from participating library systems, with a focus on providing materials that serve a wide range of interests while dramatically minimizing hold times. Library systems with service populations under 150,000 are eligible to join the IDL. Local participating libraries include: LaPorte County Public Library System, Crown Point Community Library and Hammond Public Library.

Artisan able to display, promote various art media %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Whether it’s traveling to another country or shooting in an office, Julie McElmurry is able to both display and promote the work she and other artists have done, all for a good cause.

McElmurry is not only a member of Hospice Artisans, she manages the group’s website. That includes shooting photos of various media volunteers have donated.

Founded in 2006, Hospice Artisans provides fundraising for Hospice of the Calumet Area. The group has been recognized for the quality of its workmanship, from greeting cards to woodworking, pottery to glassware.

That’s where McElmurry comes in. Not only is she an artist in photography, watercolors and multimedia, she also manages the website, updating the public on the varied materials for sale. She also uses her creativity while photographing original pieces for display on the website.

“I love to have an outlet for my creativity,” said McElmurry, a Dyer resident. “It’s a combination of my artistic side and my volunteer side

working to do good.”

Since learning about Hospice Artisans in 2018, McElmurry began work on the website two years later.

Her role includes updating the site, photographing pieces, then adding those images to the site.

The retired vice president of information technology for NiSource, McElmurry also worked for Inland Steel. She and her husband, Tom, both drivers for Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana, have two grown children.

Working from the Hospice office in Porter, McElmurry arranges items for shooting images. Works may include scarves, glass, and paperie, such as journals, folios, sticky notebooks and recipe books.

“I have to figure out a way to photograph them so people have an idea of what they are and want to buy them,” McElmurry said.

Sales through the website became important during the pandemic, as sales at special events are only now returning. Hospice Artisans hosts an annual boutique in the fall.

Artisans reflect a variety of backgrounds and skills. They include teachers, graphic

designers, sales professionals, bankers and architects.

“It’s amazing there are enough talented artists who feel so strongly enough about Hospice they are willing to see their works specifically displayed to benefit Hospice,” McElmurry noted.

McElmurry’s photography, which is transformed into prints for greeting cards, reflect her travels to England, France, Germany and the Pacific Northwest.

Lydia Dershewitz, project manager for the Artisans, praised McElmurry’s artistic and volunteer efforts.

“The Hospice Artisans are so grateful to have Julie on our team. She came to us with an impressive background in business and IT,” Dershewitz said. “That, combined with her creativity and dedication to Hospice of the Calumet Area, has allowed us to move forward and upward.”

Dershewitz added that McElmurry’s “melding of skill and heart have made an invaluable member of our team.”

McElmurry also represents the town of Dyer on the Shared Ethics Advisory Commission.

her father received in Ohio, McElmurry added, “Hospice was so helpful, and anything I can do to support the organization is important.”

I saw somewhere that if you store your strawberries in a Mason jar in the refrigerator they will last up to three weeks, so of course I tried it, but using a spaghetti sauce glass jar with metal cap. I’ve not hit three weeks yet, but I am at two weeks and they are looking good.

This is wonderful news in my house because while we have berries every day, we often have too many in the fridge and they get a little less than optimal. I have now put blueberries in a smaller jar to see if it will work for them as well. This is a game changer.

Another experiment I am about to start is growing microgreens. Microgreens are edible young greens produced from various kinds of vegetables. They range in size from 1 to 3 inches including the stem and leaves and have a high level of naturally occurring nutrients, minerals and antioxidants. I have been buying them at our local farmers market and putting them on salads and sandwiches and have discovered the amazing freshness they add. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Hopefully spring has sprung

by the time you are reading this, and you have returned to walking outdoors or moving in some other manner. Getting outdoors fills the lungs with freshness, clears the mind of clutter and gets those lazy winter muscles back into action. Walk, stretch, whatever you can do — do it.

Raw onions are hard for me, but pickled red onions I have found very doable. I do a modified version of this recipe by omitting the sugar and salt, so mine technically aren’t pickled.

Pickled Red Onion 1 red onion, thinly sliced ½ cup distilled white vinegar 2 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon kosher salt ½ cup ice cubes Add sliced onions to a heatproof jar with a lid.

In a medium saucepan, bring vinegar, sugar and salt to a simmer, whisking until salt and sugar are dissolved.

Remove from heat and stir in the ice cubes.

Pour mixture over the sliced onions in the jar. Cover and refrigerate at least one hour and up to two weeks. Save brine for vinaigrettes.

The media mogul behind the scenes %\ 720 02552: 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV The name of William Fox can be seen everywhere around the globe, but few people have ever heard or read anything about him.

Besides the Fox news network that includes Fox News, Fox Network, Fox Business and Fox Sports, he’s legacy includes 20th Century Fox films.

His name wasn’t even Fox. He was born Wilhem Fuchs in Tolcsva, Hungary, on Jan 1, 1879, and the name was changed after his family immigrated to New York when he was 9 months old. As a youth, Fox sold candy in Central Park, worked as a newsboy on the streets of New York and worked in the fur and garment industry.

In 1900, Fox purchased his first nickelodeon, a coin-operated machine showing early short films, the forerunner of what would soon be put on a theater’s big screen. Always more of an entrepreneur than a showman, Fox concentrated on acquiring and building some of the nation’s major movie theaters and purchased film prints from major movie companies.

In 1915, he formed the Fox Film Corp. The company’s first film studio was in Fort Lee,

N.J., and he began raking in millions of dollars through movies that featured Fox Film’s first breakout star, Theda Bara, who became renowned as “The Vamp” after her performance in “A Fool There Was.” In 1925, Fox purchased the U.S. rights to Tri-Ergon, a sound-on-film system, with which he created Fox Movietone News that became the film news standard.

Competing sound-on-disc technologies, such as the Warner Bros. Vitaphone, became obsolete. From 1928 to 1964, his was one of the major theater newsreel series in the U.S., along with “The March of Time” (1935-1951) and “Universal Newsreel” (1929-1967).

Despite his film studio being moved to Hollywood, Fox opted to remain in New York where he was more familiar with financiers than with either his movie makers or actors. Prominent Fox Film Corp. Oscarwinning actress Janet Gaynor once acknowledged she barely knew William Fox, stating, “I only met him to say ‘How do you do?’”

Following the 1927 death of Marcus Loew, who was head of rival Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Fox saw an opportunity to expand his empire, so in 1929 he bought the MGM holdings from the Loew family. MGM studio

bosses Louis B. Mayer and Irving Thalberg were outraged because, despite their high management position at MGM, they were not shareholders and had no corporate control. However, Mayer used his strong political connections to persuade the U.S. Justice Department to sue Fox for violating federal antitrust laws.

In mid-1929, Fox was badly hurt in an automobile accident and, by the time he recovered, the stock market crash that October wiped out nearly all of his fortune, ending any chance of the Loews-Fox merger going through even if the Justice Department had approved it.

The next year, Fox lost control of his organization and, in 1935, Fox Film Corp. merged with 20th Century Pictures, becoming 20th Century Fox. He never had any involvement with the newly formed film studio that famously bears his name.

During a bankruptcy hearing in 1936, Fox attempted to bribe Judge John Warren Davis and committed perjury. Fox served a five-month sentence on charges of conspiring to obstruct justice and defraud the U.S. government in connection with his bankruptcy.

His death in 1952 at the age of 73 went unnoticed by the film industry. No one from Hol-

His remains were interred at Salem Fields Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Today, his name can be seen everywhere in the television news, entertainment and sports

United Way names Adam O’Doherty as its inaugural president and CEO United Way of Northwest Indiana has announced Adam O’Doherty will be the organization’s inaugural president and CEO. O’Doherty was selected following a robust and rigorous national search, spearheaded by a seven-member committee, comprised of members of the United Way board of directors and local community leaders.

The committee was led by Jeff Strack, CEO of Strack & Van Til. “Since last fall, we have been looking for the best candidate to lead our organization into our next phase of service,” said Strack, United Way of Northwest Indiana’s board chair and CEO search committee chair.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled that Adam has taken on the challenge. He’s a Midwesterner at heart and will bring an innovative mindset to our region as we help families and individuals thrive.”

For the last three years, O’Doherty has served as the CEO of United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties in Saf-

ford, Ariz. As a social entrepreneur and certified results-based facilitator, he brings over 15 years of leadership experience with a proven record of creating innovative social impact solutions.

“I am excited to join such a warm and welcoming community and work in partnership toward achievement of our common goal of building successful communities,” said O’Doherty, the new president and CEO for United Way of Northwest Indiana.

He is a passionate advocate for children and their families and has a strong sense of community. He firmly believes, “No single entity or group can solve the challenges that face our students, our families, or our communities. It takes commitment from all sectors — education, business, higher education, civic and philanthropy. We all need to work together with shared accountability and high expectations for every person in our communities,” said O’Doherty.

There were significant expressions of interest in the

role, regionally and nationally, among senior executive leaders across multiple sectors. Koya Partners, the executive search firm with an exclusive focus on recruiting senior leaders to mission-driven roles, led the search in partnership with the committee.

O’Doherty will be stepping into the new role March 14. As president and CEO, O’Doherty will provide strategic leadership to a staff of 20 and work with a dedicated board of 36 community leaders, more than 300 community partners, 4,000 donors and 5,000 volunteers across five northwest Indiana counties.

In October 2021, Lake Area United Way and United Way of Porter County merged to become United Way of Northwest Indiana. Everyone’s home is their castle, but for some it can be their bank.

The equity in your domicile has been rising over the years and is like stuffing cash under your mattress. It isn’t doing you any good if you aren’t using it.

There’s a catch here. You don’t want to re-mortgage your house just to pay off credit card debt or climb aboard a cruise around the world. It makes sense if you need to bolster your retirement income, or if the property needs repair or can be enhanced to further increase its selling price.

Much touted for folks in this frame of mind are reverse mortgages.

cash-poor people, they have hidden costs and clauses that can make you homeless.

Providers of these loans do the appraisal and let you know how much you can borrow. They proclaim all you have to do is maintain insurance coverage, keep up the maintenance on its condition and appearance, pay the taxes and utility bills; and keep on living in it. If you move out, you repay the loan.

The means, should you or your spouse become debilitated and have to move into a senior care facility, you have to repay the loan — which, in most cases, means you won’t have enough money to afford the senior care living.

A more financially sound and manageable plan is to arrange a home equity loan — again, only if you need the money. Augmenting your

monthly living income is a sound reason. Talk with your financial advisor and do the arithmetic to make sure you borrow enough to make the payments on the loan, known as servicing the loan out of the loan.

Or you can arrange for a line of credit to be tapped into only if a cash crunch hits.

If interest rates drop a good chunk lower than your current rate, you might consider refinancing.

Some financial gurus suggest you go for the longest rate, which lowers the monthly payments you have to make. Then, some of them say, you can make a 13th payment every year. This plan calls for making an extra principle-only payment each year, which cuts down both the life of the mortgage and amount of debt you repay.

Compare interest rates.

If the percentage between a 30-year mortgage and a 15year loan is miniscule, take advantage of the longer-term financing. And don’t worry about making extra payments to shorten its life.

Make sure, however, there is no prepayment penalty on any type of loan you obtain.

Virginia lodge lures kids of all ages %\ )<//,6 +2&.0$1 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV “You want me to get on that and go down to where?” I wailed from atop the Alberta Falls water slide looking down to an alleged pool that was well out of visual range. All I got from my 11-yearold granddaughter was a simple nod.

That was my introduction to an array of activities that mesmerized the 70-year-old kid in me as much as they did Mollie and 14-year-old Dalya as we frolicked through Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg, Va. We could have spent all three days at the resort and still not exhausted the available options.

Having to leave to visit Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens was just a distraction.

There was so much going on at the water park, I didn’t know where to look. The pool basketball game; lazy river; wave pool; kiddie pool; and Fort Mackenzie, a 12-level interactive treehouse with a section of ascending interconnected rope tunnels leading to two winding slides; a surf stimulator; and the eight water slides that stretch both inside and outside the building and dominate the park.

No matter what the activity, you’re never too far from a surprise dousing from overhead buckets both large and small, but everywhere the smiles were as wide as the lazy river was long.

Options ranged from the toddler pool proudly boasting its depth at 0’ and containing miniature water buckets and slides to an array of adult slides from gentle family raft rides to the Howlin’ Tornado with sheer drops and stomach-churning turns.

The wave pool allowed us to relax as we simulated riding the ocean waves.

Once our skins unpruned, we were ready for the many landbased adventures offered by the water park.

But first we sampled the dinner buffet just off the lobby where continuous other activities unfolded. When I went for my salad, there was dancing in the lobby. Back for my entrée and there were 50 little kids engrossed in story time. During dessert, a musical presentation enthralled us all with singing trees, animals and other fanciful creatures.

Entertainment around the clock is what Great Wolf Lodge is all about.

The piece de resistance (after the water park) is the MagiQuest that takes kids through all four floors of the hotel to acquire magical powers, potions and portents — all enabled by their magic wand.

There are multiple quests, each with multiple clues that require you to visit the Enchanted Forest, Tangled Woods, Piney Path and Whispery Woods, all located throughout the hotel.

“The Ancient Book of Wisdom,” which you get when you sign up for MagiQuest, directs you to the clues.

Encounters are surprising

throughout the adventure. And if you wand a Quest site that’s not on your list, you might hear: “Silly Magi, you have to be on this quest before I waste my time with you.” The larger-than-lifesized knight in a stairwell pleads, “You have found 200 pieces of gold hidden in my armor. Now get me out of here!”

It’s a lot of fun, but you have to stay out of the way of kids racing around dueling each other with their wands.

If you tire of this unusual game of dungeons and dragons, you can opt to play miniature golf at the Howl in One, hang out at the arcade or get a henna tattoo.

There was so much going on, so many bizarre places to wield a wand, with a variety of big screens showing animated adventures spaced throughout, that I just trailed happily behind my granddaughters.

The list of the things we didn’t do was almost as long as those we did. We didn’t get to the Scoops Kid Spa, where the nail polish for mini-manicures all come with ice cream flavor names; the pedicures are done

while seated in giant banana split thrones; the facials, bath balms and scrubs are either vanilla, chocolate or strawberry; and the glitter make-up application comes with a tiara.

We didn’t try Oliver’s time challenge, where you race both against the clock and your opponents to push out balloon-sized

blinking light buttons. We didn’t bowl at Ten Paw Alley with five-pound balls and bumpers along the pint-size lanes. Nor did we attend any of the several 4D-movies offered at the Howly Wood Theater. We could have spent a week there and never gotten bored.

Inspirational coach helped pave the way for female athletes %\ &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Betty Funkhouser’s name should probably be in the dictionary next to the word “inspiration.” She helped create the first girls basketball team at her high school when she was a student. Early in her career, she started a school’s first varsity girls cross country team. She ran her first marathon at age 46. In her 43 years of teaching and coaching, she has motivated, encouraged and influenced more youths than could even be counted.

Funkhouser grew up in Peru, where there was only a boys basketball team at her high school.

“As a senior, I signed up to be the spokesperson to talk at the school board meeting to have a basketball team. My mom was in the audience as my supporter, along with my friends who wanted to be on the team. The result was Peru High School first girls basketball team, created that year in 1979.”

She went on to Marion College, which is now Indiana Wesleyan University.

“At that time, there were no athletic scholarships for girls,

but Marion had competitive sport teams for women. I played all four years of field hockey, track and field as well as volleyball and basketball,” she said.

Funkhouser started out coaching high school girls varsity volleyball and track. After four years, she started the first varsity girls cross-country team and remained in that position for two years — both undefeated years where the team went on to state.

After six years coaching at the high school, she transferred to teaching at Hobart Middle School and coaching sports to build up a feeder program for the high school.

“I have continued to coach the middle school level for the past 37 years. I began coaching middle school volleyball in the fall until I was able to start the first middle school cross-country team. I am still coaching crosscountry, track and field and 7th girls basketball,” she said.

She teaches physical education and health and is an American Red Cross water safety instructor and director of the summer “learn to swim” program.

“My favorite and most rewarding part of coaching is watching the athletes I coach recognize

their improvement and witness their own level of excitement and self-confidence when they recognize their own improvements,” said Funkhouser.

She runs in many races, such as marathons, and loves seeing former students participating.

“I love hearing, ‘Hey Coach Funkhouser’ or ‘Coach Funky’ before, during or after a race from those I have helped realize the importance of maintaining good overall fitness into adulthood,” she said.

When not at work, she is often running.

“Trail races are the best as it’s so mentally relaxing to run through all the beauty and obstacles nature has to offer.

I compare the challenges of running on trails to the challenges in life: running through mud, water, roots, rocks, ice and whatever Mother Nature brings your way on race day and you push through to the finish line knowing you can overcome each of them,” she said.

“Running is definitely a stress relief for me. I always feel better at the end of a run than I did at the start. Issues you may have on your mind just seem more manageable after a run and your

Working inside the former Habitat ReStore, members of three churches volunteered on a Faith Build for a new home for a local mom and her two children.

Nearly 40 volunteers worked on 32 interior and exterior walls for the new one-story, 1,460-square-foot facility structure.

Involved in the Faith Builds program were members of Suncrest Church in St. John, Anthem Church in Hammond and Augustana Lutheran Church in Hobart.

Habitat is no stranger to churches. Since its founding in 1976, its website states, Habitat has been built on a “foundation of faith.”

The website states, “We are God’s hands and feet, here to serve others and show them His love. The tangible experiences that Habitat provides allow you to engage those around you, live your faith, and offer a unique opportunity

to love your neighbor.”

Working with their fellow Anthem members, Cindy Garrett and Juanita Huerta were both on their first Habitat project.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to just come out and help with these homes,” Garrett said. “It’s also a great opportunity for the community.”

“I love it,” Huerta added.

“Whatever we can do to help others. This is what we should all be about.”

Wende Burbridge, director of development for Habitat of Northwest Indiana, said the new home would cost an estimated $160,000 in materials and fees. Those costs reflect a $25,000 increase over the past three years, Burbridge noted.

Mark Boroughs, project construction manager, said the home will feature a master suite on one side, with rooms for the two children on the other side, along with a kitchen, two baths and a living room.

John Dobry of Suncrest has worked on other Habitat projects and said his church takes on one such project each month. A retired bricklayer, Dobry was a millworker for 38 years.

There are several telltale signs that blood flow to your brain has been cut off, which causes brain cells to die and affects your awareness and activity.

The most common cause of a stroke is a blood clot that plugs a blood vessel in the brain.

Strokes can also occur when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds into the brain.

The victim may feel nothing, some numbness or severe pain.

The result can be minor or debilitating, striking the whole body with long-term mental and physical paralysis.

It’s the third leading cause of death.

Getting treatment within an hour of the attack can prevent much of the damage and disability it inflicts. Restoring blood flow to the brain as quickly as possible lowers the chance of serious permanent injury.

Those most likely to have a stroke are the elderly, and risk factors include hypertension, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, sickle cell disease and a family history of stroke.

Indications that you’re having a stroke include stumbling as you try to walk, weakness on one side, trouble seeing and difficulty speaking. Most people do not recognize they’re having a stroke, so it’s up to someone nearby to recognize the signs and call 911 immediately.

What you will notice is the stroke victim is confused and has trouble talking to you and understanding what you are saying to them. They might suddenly have trouble seeing you out of one or both eyes.

You could notice a sudden drooping, especially of one side of their face and body.

They might complain of a sudden headache and dizziness while losing some of their physical coordination.

If you notice anyone with just one of these signs, call 911.

From Augustana Lutheran, Joe and Nancy Barron worked together. A first-time Habitat volunteer, Barron recalled his late brother, who was “really big” in Habitat in Georgia. He worked alongside former President Jimmy Carter.

“This is what we should be

doing for good people,” Barron said. “Jesus was born in a manger, and he was the greatest person of all time.”

His pastor, Rev. Scott Mauch, is a former electrician who served with Habitat in Boone County. He also worked on post-Hurricane Katrina projects in New Orleans and Mississippi.

“Habitat is faith based, and we are just supporting that

faith,” Mauch said.

Dawn Michaels, executive director of Habitat of Northwest Indiana, said this was the group’s first wall build this year. The local Habitat affiliate, she said, plans to build seven homes this year.

Michaels said the Faith Build is an “absolutely fantastic opportunity for the faith community to partner with and help Habitat.”

When the Navy saved Notre Dame University %\ 3$6725 *5(* /$:621 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU During the Navy vs. Notre Dame football game in the fall of 2021, at Notre Dame field, the announcers reminded everyone (even TV viewers) of the time during WWII when the U.S. Navy indeed saved Notre Dame University from financial ruin; thus the forever mutual respect the one has for the other.

The city of Gary, as few people and fans may know, played a part in saving Notre Dame in one of the WWII years being 1943. Remember that thousands of young men and women were either being drafted or otherwise enlisting into military service.

Hundreds of prospective students were no longer coming to Notre Dame and therefore causing a loss of tuition and other financial income. Why and how the Navy chose Notre Dame for its training location for “The Third Midshipmen’s Class at Notre Dame” is not known to this writer.

I’m proud and honored to have a rare copy of a book that has hundreds of photos of the “Midshipmen” in the third class at Notre Dame; that book being the “Capstan.” Also in this rare book are photos of the executive officers who trained the young men who came in from all over America.

From the “Capstan,” we learn much about the rigorous training the men went through, as well as the social activities afforded them. But first, the city of Gary must be honored in

It’s also unknown if Chester survived World War II and if so, did he return to Gary, family and friends? Does anyone know the answers?

The Navy indeed saved Notre Dame University during the World War II years, and Gary and Chester J. Aubuchon were both a proud part of it all the way through those dark and terrible days.

Airline companies have learned already that their business travel segment has been cut severely because modern technology allows employees to work from home and communicate with colleagues, contact clients and attend management and sale meetings via computer, thus replacing the need to commute.

Several travel gurus feel the airlines have made some permanent changes to accommodate what they expect to be a healthy rebound in tourism travel, especially domestically, within the next few months as border closures are expected to be replaced by vaccine requirements as restrictions are being lifted throughout Asia and Europe.

If you’ve already had a flight cancelled because of the pandemic, you may have a voucher or accumulated credit miles to apply to travel plans. But read the fine print to see whether you have to make your booking during a certain time or if there’s a time limit when that flight must be taken.

Meals on Wheels seeking volunteers, using new app An increased number of clients and meals means Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana urgently needs volunteer meal delivery drivers throughout Lake and Porter counties. The most urgent need is in Merrillville, Hammond, Highland, Griffith, Hobart, Miller, Munster, Whiting and Lakes of the Four Seasons. Other routes are also available. Volunteers pick up meals at lunchtime at a meeting spot in their community and deliver to local people in need.

The new app saves time and is remarkably convenient.

The new Meals on Wheels Mobile Meals app is easy to use and saves time. It is a more efficient way to deliver meals and respond to any client or volunteer issue. The delivery routes can now be viewed by the Meals on Wheels staff on the desktop dashboard in real time.

Additionally, volunteer van drivers are immediately needed to deliver food containers to designated locations. All van routes originate at its Merrillville facility. Bag packers and bag stampers are also needed. Various two-hour daytime shifts are available.

Sixties Flashback —

Hippie communes, the temporary utopias During the ‘60s, thousands of young Americans opted for a life in one of about 3,000 “hippie communes” %\ 5$1'$/ across the & +,// country.

Who were those mavericks who made such an unorthodox choice? Generally, they were disaffected urban and suburban baby boomers who rejected traditional society.

Their numbers included backto-nature farmers, anti-war protestors, civil rights zealots, young men avoiding the draft, unfettered hedonists, criminals on the lam and fringe folks with nowhere else to go.

There was no “one size fits all” in such cooperatives, as each group developed its own culture. Some were religious based, others entirely secular.

Drugs flourished in certain quarters but were forbidden in others. Some were selfsufficient and agrarian based, while others ran capitalismfueled businesses.

Many residents did adopt a popular uniform of the day — long hair, long beards, long dresses, psychedelicpatterned clothes, sandals, beads, rimless “granny”

glasses. (As a sort of social counterpoint, certain villages declared themselves clothing optional.) Traditional JudeoChristian tenets were sometimes replaced by elements of Buddhism and Hinduism.

The widespread popularity of astrology generated the term “Age of Aquarius.” Music heroes such as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead were enthusiastically proclaimed “cool.”

It is important to give credit where credit is due regarding some of the principles adopted from these coteries. Resident bohemians often followed healthy vegetarian diets and practiced holistic medicine.

Gays and lesbians, frequently rejected by society at large, were usually welcomed by commune members. On college and university campuses, ethnic studies of Blacks, Native Americans and Latinos blossomed, as did “teach-ins” about the Vietnam War. Counterculturists concerned about the environment helped to establish the first Earth Day in 1970.

It was a variety of problems that lead to the ruination of many collectives. One of the main issues often the lack of any structured governing body. Rules were often lax when it came to raising food, sharing parental responsibilities and doing household

(Farming, for example, involved hard work and wasn’t especially lu-

crative). Jealousy often drove irreparable wedges between certain “free love” groups.

Some residents simply grew older and chose to leave to embrace a world once scorned — working for The Man, driving a station wagon, buying a tract home. Others just packed up and moved on to somewhere and something else.

Vermont organic farmer Robert Houriet once lived an idyllic life as a commune

resident in the Green Mountain State. Decades later, he declared, “There has to be some leadership and decision making, some control of membership,” he said in an interview. “You can’t sell drugs to people in town, go skinny-dipping in the town pond and offend your neighbors.” He paused, then added, “There was a brief, shining moment when we knew it could work. We knew it could work, but we blew it.”

DIRECTIONS: Step 1 Preheat oven to 375°F. Line bottom of an 8-inch springform pan with parchment paper; lightly coat bottom and sides of pan with cooking spray. Place the pan on a parchment paper-lined rimmed baking sheet.

Step 2 Combine chopped chocolate and coconut oil in a small saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until the chocolate is completely melted. Remove from heat and let cool slightly, about 5 minutes.

Step 3 Meanwhile, whisk pumpkin, almond flour, maple syrup, cocoa, brown sugar, espresso granules, vanilla and salt together in a medium bowl until well combined.

Step 4 Whisk the melted chocolate mixture into the pumpkin mixture until well combined. Pour the batter into the prepared springform pan; smooth the top with a spatula. Bake until a crust has formed on the top and sides, about 50 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Remove the pan sides and let the cake cool completely, about 1 hour. We’ve all been through this before.

You hear a new tune on the radio, and it grabs you by $ %RRPHU %ODVW the collar, 7R 7KH 3DVW demanding %\ 5$1'$/ your atten& +,// tion. Soon it’s burrowing deeply inside your brain, to reside there forever. It’s a song you never forget. But sometimes, when you get to thinking later about its rather puzzling lyrics, you end up scratching your head and asking, “What is this really all about?”

We’re talking here about “A Horse with No Name” by UKbased America, a trio of U.S.born folk singers — Dewey Bunnell, Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek — who each had fathers who frequently relocated to military bases around the world.

“The song was born out of pure boredom,” admitted leader Bunnell, a Neil Young soundalike who was just 19 when he created the millionseller. “I had just graduated high school in London, and my family moved up to Yorkshire ... I wanted to stay in London, so I moved into the home of a friend and his family … I wrote the song alone in this guy’s bedroom that I shared … I wanted to capture the imagery of the desert, because I was sitting in this room in England, and it was rainy. I wanted to capture the

$0(5,&$·6 $/%80 &29(5 2) ´+256( :,7+ 12 1$0(µ heat and the dryness.” First called “Desert Song,” Bunnell built his odd tale on a foundation of three guitar chords.

In 1971 the trio released their self-titled debut album in the UK but, since no issued single had caught record buyers’ attention yet, sales proved lackluster. However, when “Horse” became a successful British 45 that November, the America LP was reissued to great success, thanks to the Bunnell-composed hit track.

When Bunnell’s creation was released in the States, it too become an overnight winner; the Warner Records 45 reached Number One here for three weeks, and the America album dominated the LP charts for over a month.

The song’s imagery had emerged from Bunnell’s childhood at an Air Force base on the damp central California coast. He recalls, “We’d drive through Arizona and New Mexico. I loved the cactus and the heat. (In the song) I was trying to capture the sights and sounds of the desert.”

His free-flowing lyrics were painted with a broad brush and ranged from the elementary school simplicity of: “There were plants and birds and rocks and things” and “The heat was hot and the ground was dry” to the Dylanesque denseness of: “The ocean is a desert with its life underground “And a perfect disguise above” Bunnell saw the desert as an existential epiphany but later admitted, “The song was a travelogue with an environmental message in there about saving the planet.”

As to the enigmatic image of the horse? “I see now that this anonymous horse was a vehicle to get me away from all the confusion and chaos of life to a peaceful, quiet place.”

Come to think of it, though, after all that time spent in peaceful desert solitude, wouldn’t the narrator have eventually come up with a name for his steed?

Capital campaign aims to add community pool at Portage YMCA The staff and board of the Portage Township YMCA have announced plans to launch a capital campaign to add a community pool at its location on Willowcreek Road in Portage.

As a city located on the southern tip of Lake Michigan, water safety is of the utmost importance. Unfortunately, the residents have never had consistent access to a community pool. The plan is to provide residents with both an indoor and outdoor pool experience by utilizing a retractable dome.

The Portage Township YMCA completed a building expansion project in 2008. But a fundraising shortfall precluded the pool from being a part of that expansion.

The Portage Y has silently raised $811,000 through private donations, city of Portage ARP funds and redevelopment commission funds. The total project is $4.15 million and the lead donor position, including naming rights, is currently still available. In addition to covering construction costs, the goal is to raise additional funds for an endowment. The endowment will exist to ensure the pool will be around for many generations to enjoy.

“It is truly exciting to be in the planning stages of bringing this fantastic amenity to Portage. I honestly was not sure if I would see this during my time here at the Y, but I am so glad to be a part of this,” Shannon Burhans, president and CEO of the Portage Township YMCA stated.

Letter to the editor Discriminating against the unvaccinated Dear Editor, Last Sunday, I heard a sermon by an African-American minister. He was from Mobile, Ala. When he was young, he remembers businesses having signs on the front by the door, which warned such things as

“whites only” and “no dogs or negroes.”

He said that now the U.S. is practicing the same kind of “Jim Crow” policies that he experienced as a child. But now, the discrimination is against the unvaccinated. The

government and corporations are actively discriminating by refusing jobs or pay to the unvaccinated.

I think the minister was correct.

Methodist Hospitals Foundation received a $25,000 grant from the Patricia Merrell Memorial Transportation Fund at the Legacy Foundation to support patient travel assistance. Patients who reside in Merrillville, are over 55 and are receiving care from the Southlake Campus Hospital could be eligible for the assistance.

“Patricia Merrell established this fund at Legacy Foundation through a bequest at her death. She realized the importance of accessibility for those struggling

to find transportation for medical care. Legacy is proud to support her last wishes and create long-term support for this needed service,” said Legacy Foundation President and CEO Carolyn Saxton.

The Southlake Campus Hospital staff will identify eligible patients receiving care from the inpatient and outpatient service areas where transportation is central to their continuity of care.

Methodist Hospitals serves a number of senior patients who are not covered by Medicaid or Medicare; therefore, all social determinants that affect their care must be considered. Limited and readily accessible transportation is one such determinant and often disrupts patients being discharged from inpatient care or interferes with those requiring multiple outpatient

medical appointments, especially if they have mobility challenges.

“Methodist Hospitals is committed to improving access to care within the northwest Indiana region, and lack of transportation can be a key barrier. We are grateful for this grant, which will allow us to better accommodate the needs of the seniors of Merrillville,” said Methodist Hospitals President and CEO Matt Doyle.

The Patricia Merrell Memorial Transportation Fund was established at Legacy Foundation through a bequest gift. This allows donors to support the causes they care about beyond their lifetime.

Sometimes a harpooned whale would drag a boat on a perilous “Nantucket sleigh ride” that could cover miles, last hours and leave the exhausted crew far from their mother ship.

When a man signed on a whaling crew it was not just for a few days, a week or two or even a month. They didn’t come home until their holds were full of whale oil and that could take anywhere from a year to four years. Hunting and butchering whales, harvesting teeth and baleen (keratin), and rendering blubber into oil was grueling,

dirty work. It was also very dangerous and the long days and weeks of hunting were extremely boring.

To learn about the industry that thrived on the east coast of the United States from the 1700s into the 1930s, the place to be is at the New Bedford Massachusetts Whaling Museum, the largest whaling museum in the world.

Here’s where visitors can get their hands on the tools of whaling and marvel at how enormous these mammals really are. Visitors can climb aboard the world’s largest ship model, the one-half-scale Lagoda whaling vessel that sailed the seven seas in the late 1800s. Priceless whaling art depicting legendary journeys fill the walls.

A skeleton of the mammoth North Atlantic Right Whale fills an entire room. It’s 60 feet long and its head, which comprises approximately a third of its total length, is 21 feet long, 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide. In other words, the world’s largest creature feeds on the world’s smallest.

A dramatic film chronicling the whaling industry points out that whalers, like most early sailors, suffered from many dietary deficiencies.

Even though there was an abundance of whale meat to eat, it was thought that it was not good for human consumption. Instead, they ate only the salt pork brought with them and suffered from

scurvy because of a lack of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The Quakers are credited with developing an integrated whaling system in the small village of New Bedford. They built refineries, candle factories and expanded import/export operations. More whaling ships sailed from this port than from all of the world’s ports combined. In fact, it was one of the most important whaling ports in the world in the 19th century. And between 1825 and 1925 it was known as “The Whaling City.”

Its motto back in the day was “The City That Lit the World.”

I do a lot of dumb things. But I have no regrets, because these missteps often end up as an inspiration for one of ,1 $ my columns.

One of the dumbest things I ever did was about four years ago when Mary Ellen and I were planning a trip to Washington, DC, to visit some of my old classmates from George Washington University. My wife usually makes the reservations, but I took on the responsibility. BIG mistake.

I checked online and compared different rates. I found a surprisingly inexpensive hotel right in Washington and booked it. I couldn’t determine from their map how far the hotel was from the White House, which was the part of town we needed to be in … so I called.

“Hello. This is Richard Wolfsie and a few days ago I booked a room with you guys for September 4 through September 10. Can you give

me some idea how far you are from the White House and how long it would take to walk that distance?”

There was a pause on the other end.

“Well, Sir, it’s about 3,000 miles as the crow flies. If you are walking with the crows, you’re looking at about three months.”

What I had done was — yes, book a hotel in Washington.

Just not DC. It was in the middle of Seattle.

Over the years, Mary Ellen has never let me forget this dumb mistake, but now she has topped me. This is especially gratifying because she never does dumb things, with maybe one exception 42 years ago.

Here’s the story: The other night we decided to pick up Chinese food. Our favorite place had gone out of business, so we were seeking a new option. Someone recommended Happy Dragon.

Mary Ellen made the call and placed the order. The first odd thing was our ticket number: 8649735260, which I think is also the population of China.

After we ordered, I asked Mary Ellen for the address.

Brett, my son, put it in his GPS to see how long it would take to get there.

“Do we need to leave now?”

I asked.

“I think we better, Dad. It’s gonna take us about three and a half hours.”

“Wow, that much traffic?”

With that, Mary Ellen let out a yelp. I had never heard my wife yelp. Not in 42 years.

“Oh, no! I ordered our food from a Happy Dragon in Ohio by mistake.” (We live in Indiana) “I hope it was Canton, Ohio. I love Cantonese food.”

“Very funny. No, it was Happy Dragon in Columbus, Ohio. Call them back and cancel.”

I called and told him my name, and then I read him our order number.

“OK, you are Mr. fried rice, two eggrolls, wonton soup and main course is …”

“Yes, yes, that’s me. Look we live in Indianapolis and …”

“Oh, that’s a long drive; better leave now. Getting cold.”

“I’m sorry, we made a mistake and will have to cancel.

We didn’t mean to order from Ohio.”

“You don’t like Cantonese food?”

“Too late, I already did that joke.”

We reordered at the local Happy Dragon and enjoyed the dinner. That night we were a happy family, which was also our main course.
