The Porter County Public Library System is offering home delivery of items that include books, magazines, DVDs, music CDs, great courses and books on CD. Jesse Butz, director of the fivebranch library system, and Lanette Carey, an assistant who coordinates home delivery and delivers materials, explained the program, started in 2018 with one patron and which has now grown to 21.

Home delivery, they said, is available to patrons within the library system who, for whatever reason, cannot make it into a library branch.

The service is open to everyone in Porter County except Westchester Township, which has its own library system and delivery service.

“Our population

is aging, and it’s aging at home,” Butz said.

“Baby boomers are aging, and many are not physically able to come to the library, so we had to do something to provide our services.”

Carey explained the process, which starts with a client filling out a questionnaire that outlines the person’s interests and tastes. Once that information is established, Carey said, patrons may select specific items by contacting her office.

Once a month, items are delivered in a tote bag to patrons’ door.

“I love getting people books they want to read,” Carey said. “It’s enriching their lives, and I’m happy to be part of that.”

A Valparaiso resident, Carey started with the library in 2012 as a volunteer, joining the staff two years later.

Through the questionnaire, Carey said, she can learn more about the person and what else that person might enjoy. Even if the person is not a library patron, Carey can work with the individual to receive a library card. The survey includes information about fiction, nonfiction, music, and movies and television. The library can even provide a sewing machine, if so desired.

“This is a curated collection, based on people’s interests,” Butz said. “We find what they like, then we go in a certain direction.”

Each tote bag includes the person’s address information, along with an inventory of contents. Carey said the bag can hold up to 25-30 materials. Popular items, she said, have included fiction, nonfiction and older works. Trends show a growing interest in contemporary works and best sellers.

One patron, Carey said, told her home delivery “revived her joy in reading and she was happy we started the service.”

Tote bags are red, and the patron said Carey, as delivery person, was like Santa Claus to her.

Butz said additional comments included that the service helped patrons feel “fulfilled” and kept them going.

“A lot of these people are 100% isolated, with no friends or family,” the library director said. “They’re alone, and this service provides something they really need.”

The Porter County Public Library System has branches in Valparaiso, Portage, South Haven, Kouts and Hebron. The system’s coverage population is 152,580, with 52,319 people having PCPLS cards.

‘Hot Wheels’ success story just keeps on rolling 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Sometimes all it takes is someone to tell you no to inspire you to success. So it was for Greg Simms, a former special education teacher whose principal panned his idea for a Hot Wheels racing benefit.

Twenty-three years and numerous races nationwide later, Simms proved that principal very wrong.

Today Simms, 57, is a general education teacher at Washington Township, but he’s still running Hot Wheels races, including county fairs, Wanatah Scarecrow Festival, various car shows and the Strawberry Festival in Orville, Ohio.

A former high school football coach in Chicago and graduate assistant coach at Valparaiso University, Simms pursued special education at VU. He later taught at Hebron High School, where he got into Special Olympics coaching.

In 1999 he transferred to Washington Township. Approaching his new principal about Hot Wheels races as a Special Olympics fundraiser, Simms got a positive response: “Go have fun.”

Simms ran his first race, after which news spread of this unique event. That led to an appearance

at a car show in Crown Point, followed by the Lake County Fair and then the Porter County Fair and Valpo’s Popcorn Festival.

He even got support from Hot Wheels headquarters in Buffalo, N.Y. “I’m not a collector,” Simms, a Valparaiso resident, said. “I do it for charity.”

The race format is basically simple. Simms releases Hot Wheels car from a height of 11 feet onto a track that can be anywhere from 60 to 100 feet long. Winners advance until a champion is crowned.

Mattel introduced Hot Wheels in 1968 as an American brand of scale-model cars. Its primary competitor was Matchbox until 1997, when Mattel bought Tyco Toys, then owner of Matchbox.

Over the years, collectors of all ages have amassed hundreds and in some cases thousands of these miniature vehicles. What’s the appeal?

“You’re living through them,” Simms said. “You may be dreaming of a car you may want to own some day. It could be a Corvette or Porsche, or you may like the vehicle’s graphics. You may collect the cars for the different colors.”

Some collectors even set up racing tracks in their homes.“It’s just a fun thing,” Simms explained. “From one room, you go

And Hot Wheels are not just for kids, either.

“I’ve always liked people to have fun,” Simms said. “The biggest thing is, you see people get excited. Older people are reliving their past.”

This married father of two has family members challenge each other at Hot Wheels races. He recalled two couples who showed up at a race and bought their cars. The guys went for aerodynamics, while the women went for colors. One woman, who chose a pink car, ended up winning the entire competition.

“Just the look on her face,” Simms recalled. “You’d swear she’d just won the lottery.”

That, Simms added, is the epitome of Hot Wheels races. It’s not about the money, though the races help charities. In 23 years, Simms has kept entry fees at $1, the same price for a new Hot Wheels car.

and not hurt our client and his family. The firm listened and cooperated with me. That made the bill for $4,862.50 go away.

The second bill was for $1,725. That bill was caused by a bad policy of Medicare. Our client needed to be transported from a hospital in Chicago to a rehabilitation firm. Someone at the hospital in Chicago did not accurately describe the choices to the family. They asked the man to be transported to the rehabilitation firm in Crown Point. All the other choices were in Illinois.

They wanted the man to be close to family for visiting him.

Medicare approved only the first 20 miles of transporting the man. The rest of the trip would be charged to the family. The bill came to $1,725. I think the Medicare policy of a 20-mile limit is ridiculous, but I don’t write Medicare rules.

We should let a patient recover near home and family.

The ambulance/medical car company did nothing wrong.

Artist finds joy in creating glass and electroform jewelry 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU There are many people in the world with extreme talent in an art form. And then there are a few who are gifted in several mediums, who seem like they can create anything. Sean Moldenhauer of Westville would be one of those people.

The Michigan City native attended the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 1980s and early

1990s and made the most of his time there, studying everything from drawing to sculpture design to fashion.

“I was in so many different departments. It was very interdisciplinary. You could work outside of what your focus was,” said Moldenhauer. His original intent was to be an art teacher. He’s taken classes ranging from chemistry of metals to neon to silversmithing and has taken bits of what he has learned into what he makes now, which is primarily jewelry.

He has had a lot of instructors and professors who have influenced him and expanded his love of creating, starting back in high school where he really got into drawing and painting. “I had an art teacher at Rogers High School in Michigan City that really encouraged me,” he said. “I first stuck to that because that’s what I knew.” It was his talent in drawing that earned him entry into the Art Institute.

As he delved more into different art forms, he found he really enjoyed his sculpture class.

“Working with metal led to working with glass. It’s so much more refined than metal. It takes a lot more discipline to do metal.

I think glass challenges me more,” said Moldenhauer. “The foundry class that I took really got me into glass. I love the whole process of watching things go from solid to liquid and then back to solid.”

Working with glass is one skill he didn’t learn at the Art Institute, but later taught himself.

It was in the pre-internet days and he learned through watching DVDs and experimenting on his own.

“The glass world was frustrating because people could be secretive with the techniques.

Now you can just go on YouTube and watch,” he said.”Nothing makes me happy like working with glass.”

These days Moldenhauer concentrates mostly on lampworking, something he said he can get lost in while making piece after piece. It involves using a torch to melt and shape glass and there are a few things that draw him

You go and focus and it happens and it’s kind of magical. With a painting, it seems kind of static.

You can put it down and go back to it.”

He also likes being able to make something personal that people will wear. “I like the intimacy of the pendants,” he said.

Once he completes a piece, it goes into a kiln overnight and he said the next day “feels like Christmas morning when you’re really excited to open the present and see what it is. It puts a smile on my face when I open the kiln in the morning and I just want to keep doing it all the time because it really makes me happy.”

Hammond celebrates annual Veteran Appreciation Day parade Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr. and the City of Hammond will celebrate its ninth Annual Veteran Appreciation Day parade at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, in Hammond’s fifth and sixth districts.

The parade route travels from Olcott Avenue, down 173rd Street and ends at the Hessville Park Veterans Memorial.

Some of the parade participants include members of local American Legions and VFW posts, musical entertainment from area high school bands, military vehicles, Those Funny Little People and a flyover by the Lima Lima Flight Team.

This year’s grand marshal is Sergeant Boyzie Coulter, U.S. Marine Corps. Boyzie enlisted in U.S. Marine Corps in February 1983. He served 12 years from February 1983 to June 1995, and attained the rank of sergeant.

Coulter served several tours including Operation Just Cause (Security operation in Panama), Operation Desert Shield/Operation Desert Storm (liberation of Kuwait in Southwest Asia), Operation Sea Angel (humanitarian efforts in Bangladesh, India), Operation Quick Draw/Continue Hope (Somalia, Africa), Operation Cease-fire Campaign and

Red Reef V (Southwest Asia).

During Boyzie’s time in the U.S. Marine Corps, he worked as a nuclear weapons security guard, fire team leader, marksmanship instructor, squad leader/platoon guide, drill instructor and platoon sergeant. Boyzie was hired into the Hammond Police Department in February 1997, and has served as a field training officer, evidence technician and on the SWAT team. He was awarded Officer of the Year in 2000 and 2013. Boyzie currently serves as a master patrol sergeant in the patrol division. He has been married to his wife, Robin, for over 37 years.

For this example, assume the husband earned the most money during his working life and, as a result, qualified for the higher of the couple’s Social Security benefits.

His widow qualifies for 100% of her husband’s benefits after his death.

The amount of those benefits depends on two things: the husband’s age when he began collecting Social Security and the age when the surviving spouse begins collecting the survivor benefits.

For every year the husband waited beyond the normal retirement age before collecting monthly Social Security checks, he received an 8% retirement credit.

If he waited until age 70 before

collecting, he received about one-third more than he would have had he begun collecting at the current retirement age of 66, if he was born between 1943 and 1954.

To qualify for and collect that full amount, the widow should also have reached the full retirement age, which is increasing to 67 for people born after 1959, before filing to collect the survival benefits.

Teacher/coach has lifelong passion for cycling %\ &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Beverly Schweitzer of Munster has loved cycling her whole life. “I was the six-year-old riding my Big Wheel around the block endlessly,” she said.

“Later in life, I enjoyed the Chicago Night Ride and other events like this, but I was busy raising two kids and teaching school.”

As she raised her kids she continued riding, sometimes with a child in an attached seat behind her, but her rides were limited to how far her kids could go.

“When my kids went off to college, there was a void in my life,” she explained. “I decided to go on a health quest, losing over 100 pounds. Part of this adventure led me to taking spin classes at the health club and eventually led to long distance bike riding.”

While she sometimes rides with others, she also enjoys solo riding. “There is a peacefulness in cycling I don’t think I can fully explain. This summer I biked past a fox and experienced majestic mountains and beautiful fields of wildflowers,” she said. “I’ve actually biked

alongside a doe and even dodged a copperhead. There is adventure and serenity. In my opinion, you can’t beat that.”

Most of her outdoor rides are about 30 miles, but during the summer months she ups it to around 50 miles three to five times a week. She also rides her Peloton when she can’t bike outside.

Schweitzer has finished six century rides of 100 miles in a day and she is working on riding in every state. She’s done the Great Cycle Challenge four times, raising over $1,000 each time for children with cancer.

She also enjoys participating in and coaching other sports.

She was president of Munster Girls Softball for many years and coached travel teams in Munster and Lansing, Ill. as well as coaching at T.F. North High School in Illinois for six years. She currently coaches girls volleyball at Heritage Middle School in Lansing, where she has taught for 25 years. She currently plays pickleball, volleyball and golf, but cycling will always be her first love.

“Cycling is an excellent sport because it is easy on the joints and everyone can do it. You can bike by yourself or with a

group. You can commune with nature or enjoy a spin class with your favorite music. Cycling can fit into anyone’s schedule,” she said. “I love the exhilarating feeling I get when I’m pushing my boundaries to ride as fast as I can on a flat, but also the calmness that envelops me when I see something that is surpris-

ingly beautiful or awe inspiring.”

Schweitzer has been an educator for 35 years and is an eighth grade ELA teacher at Heritage Middle School. Besides coaching, she is a sponsor of the National Junior Honor Society. She also enjoys scrapbooking, playing cards and reading and is in the local band, “Classic.” The Lan-

sing, Ill., native has been married for 37 years and the couple has two adult children, a son, 32, and a daughter, 29. She is a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lansing where she is on the church council, leads a Bible study and is involved with a community dinner the church hosts once a month.

Planned soup kitchen ‘giving grace back to others’ %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU For 27 years, Hilltop Neighborhood House in Valparaiso has sought to address community needs. That includes early childhood education, a food pantry, after-school care and a learning garden.

Now add to that a soup kitchen that will be open several days a week.

Although Hilltop is nondenominational, its childcare program is a registered ministry with the state of Indiana and the agency partners with 37 area churches.

The soup kitchen, scheduled to open next summer, is “our form of giving grace back to others,” said Jennifer Wright, Hilltop president and CEO. For Wright, the soup kitchen comes down to “love thy neighbor.”

And those neighbors need help. Michelle Michaels, Hilltop’s director of development, reported that the agency addresses food insecurity through its food pantry and mobile pantry van that stops at area senior housing.

Looking at 2021-22, Michaels

said, Hilltop distributed 325,000 pounds of food; received 3,741 visits to its food pantry; and 13,157 Valpo residents received food, with 580 visits to the mobile food pantry. Those figures include a growing number of seniors, Wright said.

Valparaiso may not seem like a community with many needy, but Hilltop is in the middle of much of it. With Valparaiso University on one side, the other three sides feature temporary and alternative housing.

Hilltop is in the only designated Indiana Economic Opportunity Zone, or low-income community. An estimated 33% of that area’s residents live in poverty, compared to the Porter County average of 12%.

“There is definitely a need,” said Wright, adding that since the pandemic, the food pantry has been expanded from weekly to two days a week.

Hilltop also reported that 65% of its children clients come from low-income households and 20% are exposed to multiple languages at home.

Wright said the soup kitchen is in keeping with Hilltop’s

building will feature a kitchen, seating area for 50 and rest rooms. Open to anybody, the kitchen will tentatively operate from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Patrons will receive a hot meal and, upon leaving, a bagged breakfast for the following morning.

“So many of our clients do not have access to cooking food,” Wright said, explaining that some families may have only a microwave or hot plate. A recent fundraiser held with Don Quijote Restaurant in Valparaiso raised more than $100,000, bringing the agency’s total at

$430,000 of the $605,000 needed to build the kitchen.

“We’ll make it,” Wright said, citing an area couple who has made a matching donation of $50,000. Hilltop has already purchased an old house that will be demolished for the new construction site.

“This [kitchen] is part of our mission,” Wright said. “Being able to help others is number one at Hilltop.”

Sometimes a dragon is just a dragon In 1959, Brooklynite Lenny Lipton was a 19-yearold sophomore at New York’s Cornell University. %\ 5$1'$/ One spring & +,// night, the engineering major planned to meet for dinner with his friend Lenny Edelstein, a campus pal who roomed with a folk-musicplaying student named Peter Yarrow.

To kill a little time that afternoon, poetry-loving Lipton wandered over to the library at the Cornell Student Union — and consequently changed his fortune.

There he selected a volume of poems by humorist Ogden

Nash. (Lipton had always been drawn to Nash’s droll, playful works.) One particular Nash creation caught Lipton’s eye. “The Tale of Custard the Dragon” was a 1936 tale that involved the end of childhood, something which had been on Lipton’s mind as of late.

He reshelved the book and headed for his friend’s house in the Collegetown area. As he strolled into town, Lipton created his own poem about a dragon, an imaginary and ageless creature named Puff, who lived for a while in the heart and mind of a young boy named Jackie Paper.

By the time Lipton reached the Edelstein-Yarrow house, his verses were fully formed, and he wanted to write them down before they faded from his mind. Nobody was home, but the door was unlocked, so Lipton let himself in, rolled a

sheet of paper into Yarrow’s typewriter, and typed furiously for three minutes to create “Puff the Magic Dragon.” Lipton then left his poem in Yarrow’s machine and promptly forgot about it.

“Puff the magic dragon lived by the sea “And frolicked in the autumn mist “In a land called Honalee.”

When Yarrow saw the work later, it struck him that Lipton’s words could easily become a catchy folk ditty.

Yarrow wrote it as “Puff (the Magic Dragon)” and, once he became a part of the supergroup Peter, Paul and Mary, he began including the fantasy yarn in the fast-rising trio’s act. In early 1963, Yarrow made sure Lipton received writer’s credit when the melancholy tune became the first million-selling single for the

Eventually rumors spread that Jackie Paper referred to rolling papers for marijuana cigarettes and that Puff meant taking a “puff” on a joint.

When asked about the real

meaning, Lipton scoffed. “The Puff story is really just a lot like Peter Pan. (It’s about the) loss of innocence and having to face an adult world. ... I find the fact that people interpret it as a drug song annoying. It would be insidious to propagandize about drugs in a song for little kids.”

In Peter, Paul and Mary concerts, as Yarrow picked the opening guitar notes of “Puff,” he would sometimes smile and explain, “This is a song about a dragon ... It’s not about anything else … Just a dragon …”

My marriage in jeopardy For decades, Mary Ellen and I have been fans of the show “Jeopardy.” Every night at 7:30 we watch to see how long it takes ,1 $ for us to feel 1876+(// really stupid. %\ ',&.

I often say, :2/)6,( “I used to know that but I forgot,” which is pretty much the same thing as not knowing the answer … I mean the question.

After Alex Trebek died a couple of years ago, the show’s producers ran old episodes featuring the legendary host.

I’m not sure why I found that so unsettling. They do the same

with all old game shows. “Hollywood Squares” has had more than 800 different personalities in the boxes. While I watch those re-runs, I have to do google searches to see which of the brilliant comedians are still with us.

What about putting some notation under each celebrity’s name to save me the time and trouble?

For example: Paul Lynde (died 1982, age 55) Rose Marie (died 2017, age 94) Wally Cox (died 1972, age 48) Joan Rivers (died 2014, age 81) No, that would depress me even more. Bad idea.

At 7:00, during or just after our dinner and before “Jeopardy,” we usually watch “Wheel of Fortune,” despite neither of us being very good at it. Here’s one that stumped us a few nights ago:

TOPIC: SONG LYRIC THIS __AND WAS MADE FOR YOU AND ME Mary Ellen guessed, “This hand was made for you and me.”

I said: “This band was made for you and me.” The right answer, of course, was “This LAND was made for you and me.” I mean, how embarrassing! We decided to stop having wine with dinner.

During COVID, “Jeopardy” fever spilled over into our daily lives, since we had nothing better to do. Typically, around 6 p.m., Mary Ellen would say something like: “Sauteed chicken with green beans and sweet potatoes.”

Then I’d reply, “What’s for dinner?”

How much more fun can a couple have than that? (Now, remember, we are both in our 70s.)

Even when we had little arguments, our obsession with “Jeopardy” was evident. Mary Ellen would say to me in a broadcaster’s voice: “He leaves all the kitchen cabinet doors open, forgets to close the fridge door and also leaves the garage door up.”

“Who is Dick Wolfsie?” Saying it out loud made me feel like I had been tricked into pleading guilty to these crimes.

But I’m a very competitive person. I wanted to win.

My wife is a stickler for game rules. For example, while driving, I once said, “I think we’re lost.” I was quickly corrected by Mary Ellen: “Please put that in the form of a question.”

Cooking during an inflationary time —

Stretching your food purchasing power

Whether you have a food budget or not, it’s obvious food costs are rising about every time you go back to the store.

It’s time to control your controllables. You are in control of what you purchase and what you don’t, so create your own purchasing power and stretch those dollars.

I would imagine we have all had a time in our lives we made a big pot of something and survived the week consuming it each day (surely it wasn’t just me). A pot of chili, spaghetti, stew or soup goes

a long way and heading into winter makes all those sound really enticing.

Friends have told me they are walking away from the meat counter due to the skyrocketing prices and I gladly share non-meat ideas. If you eat meat, though, stretch out that pound of meat by using it more of an accompanying part of the meal which would be more grains and vegetables, or use just enough in the pot to enhance stew, chili or soup.

Shop what’s on sale. Meal planning is good, but right now we are in survival mode, so check out the flyers and plan around what’s on sale. If it’s shelf stable and on sale, stock up. Fresh vegetables are always preferred, but frozen works, as will canned. Just get your vegetables on your plate.

Break out the slow cooker or pressure cooker and make homemade meals that will last more than one day. Use all leftovers. Make bread — it’s easy, fun and so much less expensive. It’s time to hone

your skills in the kitchen, control what you purchase and how you create healthy, less expensive meals at home. Make conscious decisions that focus on healthy home-cooked meals and minimize the unhealthy prepackaged meals and snacks.

While the now classic song was not autobiographical for Johnny Nash, his recording is one of the most iconic tunes of the 1970s — or any decade — and the ultimate feel-good work about overcoming adversity and reveling in the joy of new hope and courage, and the determination to move forward.

“Look all around, there’s nothing but blue skies “Look straight ahead, nothing

but blue skies.”

“I Can See Clearly Now” has been described as “soulful pop” powered by a gentle undercurrent of reggae, a musical genre from Jamaica that blended local folk music with such instruments as the guitar, banjo and hand drums. Yet little is known about the talented (and pretty much forgotten) originator of the song that ushered in a form of music new to a mainstream American audience.

John Lester Nash Jr. was born in Houston in 1940 to a homemaker and a chauffeur. A goodlooking, well-mannered child, he was raised on gospel and sang at the neighborhood Progressive New Hope Baptist Church. At age 13, Nash began performing on Matinee, a Houston afternoon program that helped break down the color barrier on local television. Within three years, he was earning more money than his father.

Signing on to the ABC-Paramount label, Nash became a suc-

cessful recording artist at age 17.

His first release fizzled, but his second single of “A Very Special Love” rocketed into the national Top 25 on the Billboard charts.

Movie work soon followed. In 1958, he won the lead role in a film called “Take a Giant Step,” in which he portrayed a Black high schooler struggling in a white neighborhood. Two years later, Johnny appeared as a gang member in the movie, “Key Witness.”

Back in the recording studio, he eschewed rock ’n’ roll in favor of urbane ballads much in the style of Johnny Mathis. By the mid-1960s, though, Nash found himself out of work and pretty much overlooked.

In 1965, he and his manager/ business partner, Danny Sims, moved to Jamaica in hopes a new locale might rekindle Nash’s stalled career. Here Nash met Bob Marley, a dreadlocked reggae artist who was admired but little known outside his Kingston neighborhood. Nash immediately

acknowledged Marley’s songwriting talent, and an introduction to Sims resulted in Nash and Sims becoming the future superstar’s managers.

Nash loved the new style of music that was everywhere in Jamaica. (“Reggae represented to me a layer of rhythm that was totally infectious.”) His later 45s became UK winners, and in

1968 he reached the American Top Five with his reggae-fueled “Hold Me Tight.”

Four years later came the disc that would catapult him to global stardom when he wrote, sang and produced “I Can See Clearly Now,” which sold in the millions.

Community Healthcare System to open expanded immediate care center Community Healthcare System is expanding its medical services by adding a new immediate care and medical services center to meet the demand for quality healthcare in Northwest Indiana’s growing communities.

The new facility will replace the current immediate care location at 1946 45th St., Munster.

The 32,000-square-foot, two-story structure will be conveniently located at 10240 Calumet Ave., just a few blocks south of Community Hospital’s Fitness Pointe. In addition to immediate care, the new facility will offer diagnostic and imaging services, occupational health and physician offices for pediatrics, ENT and family medicine.

“This new center highlights Community Healthcare System’s proud history of providing high quality care to the residents of our communities,” said Randy Neiswonger, CEO of Community Hospital. “We are committed to investing in the services and technologies that contribute to the vitality of

our region and the patients we serve.”

Once the new facility opens, the 45th Street location will be converted to much-needed physician office space.

“We serve a significant number of patients from Munster and our surrounding neighborhoods, and this new center brings together quality services in another convenient, readilyaccessible location,” said Alan Kumar, chief medical officer of Community Healthcare System. “Community Healthcare System is well known for its exceptional care and patient experience, so we are pleased to be able to offer our residents additional choices for their healthcare needs.”

The modern design of the building will feature glass elevators, glass handrails in the stair towers, expansive windows on all four sides of the building, premium landscaping and two detention ponds along Calumet Avenue in front of the building. Interior finishes will

feature natural color tones and comforting aesthetics.

“Creating a space that is both welcoming and soothing corresponds with our philosophy

of providing elements that help heal the mind and spirit, as well as the body,” Neiswonger said. “In healthcare, we recognize that they all contribute

to better overall health and wellness.”

The new Munster Immediate Care Center is scheduled to open in October 2023.

‘Bunco Night’ at Crown Point Library Join the Friends of the Crown Point Library for a night of dice-rollin’ fun to raise money for early literacy.

Proceeds from their Bunco Night at the Library will support a variety of early literacy outreach efforts and programming at the library and in its community. The after-hours event will take place at the Crown Point Community Library from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11.

The Friends of the Crown Point Library is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that raises funds to benefit the library. They are dedicated to advocating for library services, promoting early literacy and funding projects and programs to enhance and promote the use

This year they have generously provided more than $17,000 to support the following: • more than 250 Book Baby Bags for newborns and parents in partnership with St. Claire Clinic; • summer and winter reading events; • storytime books and materials for book baby and preschoolage programming; • books for library book clubs; • historic trolley tours; • permanent Storywalk at the Crown Point location (to be installed 2023); • Madcap Puppets Show at Bulldog Park; • music concerts at the library;

Listening helps to communicate with Alzheimer’s victims %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV A friend has a running gag in which he tells someone that he received a solicitation for a contribution to the Alzheimer’s Association but he forgot where he put it.

It’s his bit of gallows humor to forget the fact that more than 6 million Americans are victims of this disorder.

The association offers more than requests for donations. It provides advice for Alzheimer’s sufferers and caregivers.

The organization suggests strongly that each family plan for the onset of this frustrating disease by any of its members.

The AA urges victims themselves to be candid about their disease and, at the appearance of its signs, to discuss their symptoms with family and friends.

Stress and lowered self-esteem are sidebar symptoms of this disease, according to experts.

Maintaining open lines of communication with people doomed by dementia are critical to keeping victims, caregivers, relatives and friends on as even a keel as possible as disabilities progress.

The first of a half dozen steps recommended by the AA to everyone around an Alzheimer’s sufferer is to listen.

Communicating with an Alzheimer’s victim requires patience and understanding, so those around such a person must be good listeners. And they must let the sufferer know they are listening, are being patient and are trying to understand what he or she is saying.

If the person is having difficulty finding the right word or phrase, encourage him or her to take time and continue to ex-

plain. Don’t cut in and correct the speaker. You can repeat what was said if you feel some clarification is needed.

Without adding to the Alzheimer’s suffering, you can often guess what he or she means or wants, even though incorrect words have been used. Don’t argue with a person affected by

Alzheimer’s because that only exacerbates any emotional turmoil.

Feelings are more important than facts. This has often been cited as the most important matter to remember when dealing with anyone suffering the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Many times the emotions being expressed by the victim are

more important than the words used. Tone of voice can help you search for the feelings behind the phrases.

If you don’t understand what’s being said, ask the Alzheimer’safflicted person to point or gesture to let you know what he or she wants.

Vice president’s Columbia City home highlights his political life The 27th governor of Indiana, Thomas Marshall of Columbia City, who was well known for his humorous *5($7 asides, once (6&$3(6 quipped, %\ 52' .,1* “There were once two brothers. One went to sea and one became the 28th vice president of the United States.

Neither of them were ever heard of again.” He was also credited with saying, “What this country needs is a good five-cent cigar.”

Marshall’s popularity as governor, and the fact that Indiana was a critical swing state, helped him secure the Democratic vice presidential nomination on the Woodrow Wilson ticket in 1912.

Under Wilson, as it turned out, he became the forgotten man in the government. A major ideological rift developed between the two in their first term, leading Wilson to limit Marshall’s influence in the administration. Marshall’s sense of humor rubbed the president the wrong way so he had his office moved out of the White House. This quote made

by Marshall in his vice presidential acceptance speech when he promised to “acknowledge the insignificance of the office,” and another quip saying, “I was the Wilson Administration spare tire … to be used in case of emergency,” infuriated the president.

After Wilson suffered a debilitating stroke, Marshall was kept in the dark while Mrs. Wilson essentially ran the government. With Wilson unable to function, Marshall faced a huge decision because in 1918 there was no procedure for the vice president to step into the presidency. Fearing he would open up a constitutional crisis, he decided not to become president.

Scholars are still debating whether or not he made the right choice, but for Marshall, putting the Constitution ahead of his own agenda made perfect sense. It was not until 1967 that the 25th Amendment established a process for transfer of power if the president was not able to continue to serve.

In addition to the controversy over accepting the presidency or not, Marshall has a couple of firsts to his credit. He was the first vice president to hold cabinet meetings, which he did while Wilson was in Europe. He’s also the only vice president to have been the target of an assassination attempt while in office.

Marshall was a prohibitionist.

Most guests at his parties made an obligatory appearance and left quickly because no alcoholic drinks were served.

His modest, two-story Italianate home in downtown Columbia City is part of the county historical museum that focuses

on his life, the history of Whitley County and its people.

Between 30% and 40% of the furnishings were originally owned by the Marshalls. The house, which was built in 1864, was purchased in 1958 by the Whitley County Historical Society and it took several years to rehabilitate it. He was born in North Manchester, practiced law in Columbia City and is buried in Indianapolis.

A couple upstairs rooms focus on famous Whitley County people, including singer Janie Fricke, actor Dean Jagger, World War II Major General Keller Rockey and others.

It’s Howard Cunningham who we explore in some depth in this story, actor Tom Bosley to be exact. Bosley was born in Chicago on Oct. 1, 1927, as Thomas Edward Bosley. His father was Benjamin Bosley and his mother was Dora Heyman.

Bosley had an extensive career in stage, TV and movies with two of his best known appearances in “Happy Days” as Howard Cunningham and “Murder, She Wrote” as Amos Tupper. Another popular show was Father Dowling Mysteries as the priest who solved

Early in his life, Bosley attended DePaul University in Chicago and was also a World War II veteran from the U.S. Navy. Then he entered the field of entertainment. His big break came when he made a longrunning and successful appearance on the Broadway stage as Fiorello H. LaGuardia, Mayor of New York.

Bosley was married twice; the second time to Patricia Carr from 1988 to 2010, the day he died on Oct. 19, 2010, in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He is buried in Forest Lawn Hills Cemetery, Los Angeles.

Bosley appeared in a documentary movie made by a Tennessee middle school devised to teach people about the Holocaust by making a sculpture of 6 million paper clips representing the Jews killed by the Nazis in World War II. And we learn: “Bosley shared a heartfelt story about his own experience of the Holocaust — the documentary film ‘Paper Clip.’”

Tom Bosley was Jewish and may likely have lost many relatives during the WWII Holocaust years.
