While at the dinner, John met Lt. Col. Justin Osberg, who asked if had John ever done any artwork related to the military. military Paul confessed he had not. Later in the evening, John

That got John thinking and painting, spending the next 11 months creating a collection of paintings to honor and pay tribute to America’s military and their families. “I created these paintings with passion, which are all-inclusive and relatable to all branches of the Armed Forces,” John said. “It was thoughtfully created to recognize all soldiers, both male and female, no matter what branch, job or era served.” John’s late father, a Korean War Army veteran, served as his inspiration for many of the paintings in this collection titled “Soldier Silhouettes.”
John used this series as a fundraising mechanism by donating prints to different military organizations across the country, including the Gary Sinise Foundation, the Allen J. Lynch Medal of Honor Veterans Foundation, Operation Support Our Troops-America, and BBQ for the Brave, along with military museums and veterans groups nationwide. “However, nothing gives me more joy than sharing this series with veterans across the country,” he said. “I never realized that this series would have such an emotional impact on many of our veterans and to witness the emotion that is displayed at times is sacred to me. I have been blessed and I am extremely thankful
to have had the opportunity to share these moments with our American heroes.” A self-taught artist, this northwest Indiana transplant from Chicago’s south side has become known as the “Freedom Artist.” He may be best known for creating an image of the three FDNY firefighters hoisting the American flag after the attacks Sept. 11. He has donated hundreds of these to firehouses, police departments, military installations and charitable organizations across the world. Recently, one of those Sept. 11 images was presented to the Cedar Lake Fire Department. John also donated an image of police service to
Cedar Lake Police. However, the big presentation Memorial Day was the dedication of a 100-foot-long mural John did for the exterior of Cedar Lake American Legion Post 261. The images include military organization logos, an American flag and eagle, and a three-dimensional image of this country’s Middle East fighting, including scenes in the desert and Persian Gulf. Even though that project started last November and was not completed just before Memorial Day, John is not resting on his paintbrushes. His current project, hopefully to be completed by July 4, is a 92-by-12 foot American flag outside Cedar Continued on page 5
