Centier Bank Museum now open in Whiting %\ &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Centier Bank is Indiana’s largest private, family-owned bank and has a 126-year history. A series of exhibits at the Whiting location tells the story of the bank’s founder and how the bank and banking industry, in general, has evolved over the decades. The Centier Museum officially opened June 30. It was a project two years in the making. The exhibits take visitors on a few journeys, explained Public Relations Manager Jessica Cantarelli. The first is the Centier Bank story from the mid-1800s with founder Henry Schrage immigrating to Whiting from Germany, opening a general store and, eventually, the Bank of Whiting, which is now known as Centier Bank. “The second story is the history of banking from the mid-1800s up until today. We have a timeline of how many banks were in the U.S. before the FDIC was established. There are old banking machines, like Monroe calculators and check machines on display,” she said. “The third story is the story of the Schrage and Centier families, who still owns the bank today. We are in our fourth generation of family ownership.” The museum is in the flagship branch on 119th Street in downtown Whiting, just down the street from the original location on Center Street. “We have been in that building since 1910, so it made sense to have the museum there. Centier’s history is deeply rooted in Whiting, as is the Schrage family history,” said Cantarelli. “We wanted to not only share this museum with the community of Whiting, but also with local visitors. We take all of our new associates there as part of their on-boarding orientation. We have invited past associates and current associates to view and visit the space because Continued on page 5
