Centier Bank Museum now open in Whiting %\ &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Centier Bank is Indiana’s largest private, family-owned bank and has a 126-year history. A series of exhibits at the Whiting location tells the story of the bank’s founder and how the bank and banking industry, in general, has evolved over the decades.

The Centier Museum officially opened June 30. It was a project two years in the making.

The exhibits take visitors on a few journeys, explained Public Relations Manager Jessica Cantarelli. The first is the Centier Bank story from the mid-1800s with founder Henry Schrage immigrating to Whiting from Germany, opening a general store and, eventually, the Bank of Whiting, which is now known as Centier Bank.

“The second story is the history of banking from the mid-1800s up until today.

We have a timeline of how many banks were in the U.S. before the FDIC was established.

There are old banking machines, like Monroe calculators and check machines on display,” she said. “The third story is the story of the Schrage and Centier families, who still owns the bank today. We are in our fourth generation of family ownership.”

The museum is in the flagship branch on 119th Street in downtown Whiting, just down the street from the original location on Center Street.

“We have been in that building since 1910, so it made sense to have the museum there. Centier’s history is deeply rooted in Whiting, as is the Schrage family history,” said Cantarelli. “We wanted to not only share this museum with the community of Whiting, but also with local visitors. We take all of our new associates there as part of their on-boarding orientation. We have invited past associates and current associates to view and visit the space because Continued on page 5

Social worker connects chronically ill patients with information, options %\ &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Facing a chronic, progressing illness is difficult and it’s hard for patients and family to decide what next steps to take.

Laurie Yothment, LSW, is the transitions coordinator with Hospice of the Calumet Area in Munster and helps families through such difficult times.

She has been with the organization for over 20 years.

She describes the transitions program, which differs from hospice care, as a free community outreach program to assist individuals having chronic illnesses that they will be dealing with the rest of their life.

“As a social worker, I get involved to talk about the possibilities in life — to help with conversations about goals of care and what is a level of care that the individual finds acceptable,” she explained. “We try to identify resources in the community in regards to whatever assistance they might need wherever they call home, whether it be a skilled nursing facility or their own home. In

the transitions program, we also assist with advance care planning to ensure that an individual’s decisions about their medical care is in writing.

We follow clients through the journey of their illness, the ups and the downs and provide assistance in navigating the health care system.”

Yothment has spent her entire career in health care. She was inspired by her grandparents, who were nursing home administrators.

“I would spend lots of summers there and developed a love for people and trying to help find some joy in their day everyday. I knew early on that I wanted to be a social worker in the medical field,” she said.

Yothment spends much of her time out in the field visiting with clients.

“If additional resources are needed, if there is a change in their well-being, if they are feeling less well and need to discuss options, that is all a reason for a visit,” she said.

That time spent getting to know families is one of the biggest rewards of her career.

“I have the privilege of

meeting individuals at a very vulnerable time in their lives.

They are some of the strongest and most resilient individuals I have met,” she said.

There are so many different situations she sees in the patients and families she works with. She provided some examples: a parent is in a nursing home and feeling less well and been to the hospital three times in a month for various ailments. A widow living a long life in her home falls ill, but doesn’t want to go to the hospital. A single mother of teenagers has had a cancer diagnosis for several years and, despite treatment, the cancer has progressed and options are limited. An adult child of a parent who made you promise not to place them in a nursing home, but you have to work and your parent can no longer live safely in their own home.

“These are all examples of the individuals and families that the transitions program has been involved in,” she said Yothment is a bicycling enthusiast and participates in the Hospice Hustle, riding 62 miles in the event. She’s

land, Italy and Germany. This year, she planted a cutting garden to share fresh picked flowers with friends and family.

I helped a client from Lansing, Ill., on June 28. A medical billing firm in Texas ignored Medicare rules and wrongfully billed her $975.

In helping our clients in the Midwest, I seem to find many problems with medical billing firms in Texas. The worst case was a few years ago when I helped a man from Gary, who went to an emergency room during a visit to his daughter in Texas.

The Texas biller on that occasion ignored Medicare rules blatantly. I had to work hard, but I was able to fix the problems and save our client thousands of dollars in wrongfully sent medical bills.

Why doesn’t Texas regulate medical billers better?

On this case of a Texas medical biller ignoring the rules, I wrote a stern letter to the firm. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the Texas medical billing firm: Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $975 on account No. XXXXXXX for services rendered March 3.

I phoned the client’s

Medicare supplement plan insurance company to learn what it knew of this claim.

It reported that your bill is false. Here is why.

You filed the claim for the original amount of $975.

Medicare ruled that the maximum allowed for this claim is $116.95 and that this was part of the Medicare part B annual deductible for this patient. The patient has a policy that covers the deductible.

The insurance company paid your firm the entire $116.95 on March 31 by EFT deposit into your bank account. The EFT confirmation code is XXXXXX. It was a bulk check for $394.43 to cover the claims of this and other clients.

You should fix your bookkeeping to show that this claim has been paid. Don’t send another bill to our client or we will help our client file a complaint against your bad business practices with an appropriate government office.

All the help that I gave this client was free of charge.

This insurance agency always helps our clients with such Medicare-related medical billing problems. If your insurance agent or agency doesn’t give this high level of customer service, why not switch to our insurance agency?

Retired engineer now designing ramps for Kiwanis Club %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Somebody needs to get to the doctor from his home. Another person in her condo three years needed EMS to get outside.

These are just two of the stories behind the ramps the Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis builds.

The group’s ramp coordinator is Bob Westfall, who started building ramps with Rebuilding Together, the former Christmas in April, in 2006. When that

group folded, the Kiwanis took over ramp building in 2017.

“We go all over the place to get ramp parts,” Westfall said, and that includes Pennsylvania.

Working with Amramp, a national company specializing in wheelchair ramps and lifts, the Kiwanis can build a ramp in a few hours.

Ramp materials run $5,000 per project, but, thanks to community donations and grants, residents do not pay a dime.

Kiwanians take referrals from Porter County Aging and Community Services and elsewhere, focusing on veterans and those in need. On one project, Westfall recalled, the resident had a “ramp” in place, but it was not handicap accessible. Within two hours, the Kiwanis built a new ramp that provided a straight shot from and into the resident’s home.

The resident, Westfall noted, was “happy as a clam.”

Personally, he added, “I feel great. We cry. We smile. Each ramp has a different story.”

Speaking in mid-July, Westfall estimated 46 ramps are currently in service in Porter County, thanks to Kiwanis ramp builders. Combined with Rebuilding Together, Westfall added, 117

ramps have been built in the county.

Thinking back to Rebuilding Together days in the early 1990s, Westfall recalled building wooden ramps, one board at a time. These days, aluminum pieces are used in construction, with only a handful of tools needed.

“Being an engineer, it’s nice,” Westfall said, “because it all fits together.”

A retired mechanical engineer, Westfall designs each ramp. He has a crew of 15 to 18 Kiwanians he can call for building.

Earlier this year, Kiwanis moved their ramp supplies and tools to a section of Valparaiso’s city barns also used by PCACS. Active in scouting, the community and his church, Westfall, a former Cub Scout in Chicago, remembers the scout motto: “Do a good turn daily.”

“To this day, I try to do that

each day,” said Westfall, who along with wife, Pam, has two sons and a granddaughter.

The Valparaiso resident is in the right organization for giving back. The Valpo Noon Kiwanis donates $50,000 to $60,000 annually to the community. That includes scouting, Hilltop Neighborhood House, Valparaiso Family YMCA and Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.

In scouting for 40 years, Westfall reported that a new Explorer troop for young men and women is forming locally. His two sons are both Eagle Scouts.

Also a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels, Westfall, 73, received the city of Valparaiso’s inaugural Good Neighbor Award in December 2020.

“I felt humbled,” the honoree said, adding, “It’s not just about Bob Westfall, but the other people working for the community.”

“But I really think you should go home and marry the boy at home. This isn’t the town for you. You’re just not pretty enough.”

Eden didn’t follow his advice, however, and when she was cast later in the TV adaptation of “How to Marry a Million-

aire,” Eden became a respected comedic actress. Eventually, she won the role that brought her superstardom as the bottledwelling beauty on NBC-TV’s “I Dream of Jeannie” series.

The hit show was inspired by the 1964 movie “The Brass Bottle.” Originally a 1900 novel, it later became a film that featured Tony Randall, Burl Ives and — lo and behold — Barbara Eden.

In Jeannie, Larry Hagman, the son of Broadway legend Mary Martin, costarred as straight-arrow astronaut Capt. (later Major) Tony Nelson. But Hagman often proved disgruntled during the 139 “I Dream of Jeannie” episodes, as we’ll see later.

The opening show, set on a deserted island beach, saw

Nelson stumble across Jeannie’s bottle home, where she had been imprisoned for two millennia. Soon, in a puff of pink smoke, the striking beauty was set free — and that’s when the fun began.

The show’s success meant keeping network censors busy trying to maintain a morally upright offering. Even though Jeannie slept in her bottle and Nelson in his bed, it could never be shown that the bottle was in the captain’s bedroom.

(They weren’t married until the fifth and final year of the show.) Also, Eden wasn’t supposed to expose her navel, although it did appear occasionally. Along the way, some morality-oriented gatekeepers groused about her parading around in a “nightie.” Eden

“We’ve led tours to retired associates and members of our Quarter Century Club of associates who have reached 25 years of service at Centier, new hire orientation groups and other associates,” she said.

“They’ve been delighted to see the history they’ve learned and read about come to life in our museum. We’ve also welcomed in some local historian groups, Whiting and northwest Indiana community residents and we are working with local school groups to schedule tours.”

The museum is self-guided, free and open to the public.

Letter to the editor Indiana lawmakers hurting seniors Dear Editor: Indiana politicians and laws are hurting Indiana seniors on Medicare. I know.

I have been helping senior citizens fight mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system for over 18 years.

Here are some specifics of one case that I handled today.

The senior citizen client from Merrillville brought to me a Medicare-related bill from a billing firm in Texas for a medical firm in Indiana.

He brought other papers, too. I reviewed everything and contacted his Medicare supplement plan insurance company to verify some information. Our client was being wrongfully billed for $3,124.

I wrote a letter to the billing firm explaining why I knew that the bill was wrong and that the billing firm had violated Medicare rules and how. I told them to send a new bill to our client that showed a balance of zero or I would help the client file a complaint against the firm.

Several Indiana politicians and laws make protecting an Indiana senior from a false medical bill much harder.

In this case, I learned that the Secretary of State made it more difficult to find the registered business address of a medical firm or a billing firm doing business in Indiana. Thus, the new system protects big business

from receiving complaints from common working people or anyone else. In the past, if a medical firm or medical billing firm was making it difficult for me to find someone to take responsibility for a bill caused by mistake or fraud, the Secretary of State system made it easy to find a good business address for getting the attention of someone at the offending firm. Now, under the new system, that is difficult.

Today, when I phoned the Indiana Secretary of State to get help, the representative became frustrated with me and disconnected the call. I guess us “little people” don’t count.

Another thing that bothers me is that billing firms from other states get contracts from medical firms in Indiana without needing to register to do business in the state of Indiana. In the past, one of our clients was receiving medical bills from one Indiana-based medical firm that was using a medical biller in Texas and another medical biller in Michigan at the same time.

The client was getting billed for the same services from two different medical billers in different states. To whom

should he send money?

Here is why returning to the old system of the Secretary of State and forcing out of state medical billers to register to do business in Indiana would make things better for Indiana seniors.

The Indiana Attorney General oversees a Consumer Protection Division.

If the senior is from Indiana and the billing firm is registered to do business in Indiana, it would be easy to file a complaint against the billing firm for a bad billing practice. The Indiana Attorney General’s office would handle that. Trying to get a quick response to such a complaint over state lines is much more difficult.

The Indiana Secretary of State should go back to the old system because it allowed people to check the business name and address of firms doing business in Indiana more easily. The legislature and the governor should enact laws that require medical billing firms from other states to register to do business in Indiana before they bill any Indiana resident.

This information can help consumers make informed decisions about their health and their care providers. The overall rating summarizes up to 57 quality measures reflecting common conditions that hospitals treat, such as heart attacks or pneumonia, as well as measures that focus on hospital-acquired infections including catheter-associated urinary tract infections.

These ratings demonstrate how well each hospital performed, on average, as compared to other hospitals in the U.S. hospital ratings range. Less than 15% of hospitals nationwide received five stars.

St. Catherine Hospital has been a vital part of East Chicago and its neighboring communities for nearly 100 years. Services that the hospital offers have adapted through the years as the surrounding communities’ needs have changed, but the delivery of quality care remains the same.

At least it’s probably air conditioned.

While monsoon rains, hurricanes, tornadoes and thunderstorms punctuate the heated hibernation season that stretches from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the elderly still find coping with triple digit temperatures an unending battle.

While climate-conscious observers claim the planet is getting hotter, reports continue

of infants and family pets dying of heat stroke after being left in parked cars.

As youngsters, most of us looked forward to the summer season to splash around in the nearest pool, pond, lake, river or beach.

With age, we’ve come to make sure the air conditioner and television set work to get us through the high temperature times.

Besides staying cool, it’s important to stay hydrated to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Drink plenty of water and don’t wait until you’re thirsty before taking a drink.

Pay attention to the televised

weather forecasts so you can arrange trips to the doctor, supermarket, church and anywhere else when the mercury is not at its peak.

The elderly can lose some of their ability to respond to temperature changes to protect themselves. Some diseases and medications can intensify the effects of hot weather.

Slowing your pace helps protect yourself against heat.

Don’t do anything fast or that requires sweat-and-strain efforts.

Exercise sessions — running, swimming, biking, tai chi, gym visits, aerobics — should be pared down and scheduled for

the cooler times of day.

Watch for signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and those around you. They include a fast weak pulse, heavy sweating, fainting, nausea, vomiting and a cold, clammy skin.

Heat stroke indicators range from a rapid strong pulse to skin that is hot, red and dry or moist along with a body temperature that has climbed above 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

It might also include unconsciousness.

Any of these signs call for medical treatment immediately because they mean the heat has made you sick.

Longtime assistant coach takes Bearcat football reins %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Rob Kania knows what it takes to reach the state finals.

Sometimes the final victory comes after an early loss.

Kania was an assistant coach on the Penn squad that won the 1996 Indiana 5A football crown 17-14 over Ben Davis.

Ironically, the Penn season saw Ben Davis defeat the Kingsmen, ending a regular season winning streak from 1985 to 1996.

“Winning state was awesome, fantastic,” Kania, a Chesterton resident, recalled.

“Those kids worked and worked and worked.”

So what made the difference for Penn?

As Kania noted, former Penn coach Chris Geesman and his staff did not belabor the loss.

Instead, they kept coaching and teaching, as Penn won one of five state titles under Geesman.

After 25 years as an assistant coach at several schools, Kania is in his first year as head coach at Wheeler High School.

From Geesman and other

coaches, Kania learned, “A program is not just one game.

Football is a family. It’s cohesiveness. Everybody is on the same page.”

A science teacher at Wheeler, Kania spent the last eight seasons as a Chesterton assistant. He has also coached at South Central and Portage, in addition to Penn and Wheeler.

This marks the first season since 2009 that Kania will be coaching and teaching at the same school.

“I love every second of coaching,” Kania said of his first head coaching job. “It’s the right time and circumstances, right opportunity.”

Kania and his staff welcomed 45 players, hoping to have enough Bearcats for varsity and JV squads.

The new head coach has several goals, starting with changing the culture. He also wants to win conference and be competitive in every game. The first test comes Aug. 20, when Wheeler hosts River Forest, a rival in the Greater South Shore Conference.

Sometimes success is not always mirrored on the scoreboard. Kania recalled a former

team he coached that won a sectional game but lost its star running back to a broken leg.

The following week, Kania’s team lost in triple overtime.

“My kids gave every ounce of effort,” Kania said. “I could not be prouder.”

Michael Bell, a senior defensive end sidelined with cracked ribs, described his new head coach as a “player’s coach who will also make sure everyone works hard.”

On the field, Bell added, “Coach is developing a prostyle offense, going against all defenses. If they stop us on one play, we’ll come back with another.”

Among the coaching keys Kania has learned over the years are attention to detail, organization and handling players. Good teams, he said, reflect “players who can depend on each other, great senior leadership and great school and parent support.”

A former offensive guard, Kania noted, “I love every aspect of coaching.”

Kania does not resemble a bulky offensive lineman. He’s dropped 100 pounds, thanks in part to running 15 miles daily.

Kania confessed, “I don’t know yet” what makes a good head coach. “I’m still doing the same things as an assistant, just more involved.”

Piling on the stress of sitting in the middle seat are seatmates with cute little pets and oversize bags packed under foot.

And almost every air travel trip recap and recollection is dominated by complaints rather than contentment.

“The number of people who depend on Meals on Wheels has grown exponentially since the pandemic started. We are grateful to SIA Foundation for their support that helps us deliver on our mission,” said Sandra Noe, executive director of Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana.

Yet people keep flying, despite the fact that ticket prices are climbing at jet speed and airlines are shaving flights from their schedules so their planes will be crammed full.

An acquaintance who breaks out into a sweat whenever they even think of flying had to jam themselves into a jetliner during the July 4 holiday weekend to get home for a funeral.

They could have demurred but decided the event was too important to skip. So they downed a handful of some medication

and took off.

It’s important to point out again that the majority of fellow passengers aboard their plane were as emotionally brittle as they were because of their flying phobias, which range from anxiety to claustrophobia to pure panic.

Almost 20% of the adult population cannot fly.

John Madden, legendary coach of the Oakland Raiders, never set foot in an airplane after his panic attack in 1979. He continued his sports commentator career by traveling coast to coast in a motor home.

The fact that the U.S. National Safety Council Statistics has proved over and over that flying is much safer than travelling in traffic has not diminished the number of fearful flyers. An average of 21,000 people die on the road in the U.S. in a six-month period. This is about the same total of all

commercial air travel fatalities worldwide in 40 years.

While the flights may be safe, it appears flying has become less safe.

The internet is packed as tightly as a jet plane with videos of confrontations in airports and on airlines over who can deplane first or who should be wearing masks.

Noting a “disturbing increase in incidents where airline passengers have disrupted flights with threatening or violent behavior,” the Federal Aviation Administration adopted a zero tolerance policy for those who “interfere with, physically assault or threaten to physically assault aircraft crew or anyone else on an aircraft” and increased fines.

Airlines have reported more than 3,000 unruly passenger cases to the FAA during the first half of this year.

‘Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)’ a meaningful anthem Marvin Gaye Dave Marsh is a well-respected rock music critic and historian. He’s normally quite sparing in his %\ 5$1'$/ praise, but & +,// Marsh once $ %RRPHU %ODVW could barely 7R 7KH 3DVW contain his enthusiasm when he reviewed a Marvin Gaye single and proclaimed it to be “the greatest piece of music ever written in favor of the survival of the environment on the greatest Black pop album ever made.”

That 45 was the now-classic “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecol-

ogy),” which was lifted from Gaye’s legendary 1971 LP “What’s Going On,” the first album in his extensive Motown catalog to sell a million copies.

When Motown owner Berry Gordy, Jr., was approached about “Mercy Mercy Me,” he was unfamiliar with the term ecology and had to have it explained to him. Gordy was always a tough sell about including anything political or controversial on his records and always kept an eye on the mainstream sales charts in seeking as wide an audience as possible. Initially, Gordy argued against releasing Gaye’s thought-provoking “What’s Going On?,” as he feared it could run the risk of alienating Gaye’s fans who would be expecting Gaye’s usual pop/soul product such as “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and “I

But Gaye was growing as an artist and he wanted to go deeper than his previous releases. “I began to reevaluate my whole concept of what I wanted my music to say,” he explained later to Rolling Stone. “I wanted to write songs that would reach the souls of people. Helping others drives Cedar Lake woman %< &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Giving of herself to others is something that comes naturally for Mary Joan Dickson.

Through her parish, Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Cedar Lake, Dickson has many opportunities to be of service to others.

Currently, the Cedar Lake resident serves as community outreach coordinator and instructs religious education with high school students. She has also served as youth minister and has volunteered in many other ways over the years.

She has been a member of the church since moving to Cedar Lake from Chicago in 1970.

Before that her family had attended the church during the summers.

“I live life with compassion — the compassion I received from the Lord,” said Dickson.

“We are obligated to do God’s work on earth. We need to serve our neighbor.”

In her role as community outreach coordinator, she works with people in need and gives them referrals for assistance.

She’s been serving in this capacity for the past three years.

“With the help of our parishioners, we can serve people

who fall in between the cracks of some programs offered. I also work with people who need some guidance. If you have not needed services, you may not know where to go.

Creating a list of agencies, contact information and what they do was important. Sharing this information with the schools was important. More and more people are in need and do not know where to go,” she said. “During COVID, I shopped for people who could not get out, provided school supplies for children in need and sent notes to shut-ins.

I had youth make cards for clients in the local nursing homes and made calls and checked in on people during a very challenging time.”

She considers herself blessed to have been able to provide assistance to a parishioner who recently passed away.

“The spouse needed assistance with daily tasks and medical appointments and didn’t have family close by to assist with this challenge,” she said. “My position with the church blessed me with the opportunity to be a part of the support needed. Working with the family, his wishes of staying home were made possible.

The care received from the caretakers during declining heath was amazing. Moments of campfires, good meals and stories were celebrated. The quality of care and compassion was the key to the success of this journey.”

Teaching religious education to high school students has been a big joy for her.

“I love teaching high schoolers and triggering their thoughts of religion in their daily lives,” said Dickson. “I like to present new ideas and have them practice what they learn.”

Besides the work she does through her church, Dickson has also been an active volunteer in her community.

She served on the local school board for nine years and she is active with Hanover Central Key Club, Hanover Athletic Boosters, Hanover Schools Education Foundation, Cedar Lake Summerfest and the chamber of commerce.

Dickson and her husband, Gordon, enjoy spending time with their family — a daughter, three sons and a grandson.

She loves to read, crochet, sew and celebrate her favorite holiday, Christmas, which has inspired fun vacations to Santa Claus, located in Indiana.

Among the benefits being attributed to coffee is the ability to relieve a headache as well as protecting the liver and offering defense against strokes and cancer of the mouth and throat.

Coffee drinkers who get agitated or jittery after too many cups of coffee have found that drinking decaf soothes the nerves while providing the same benefits.

Cutting back on the milk and sugar also limits your calorie intake. If coffee straight doesn’t suit your taste, try adding such flavor enhancers as cinnamon that not only improve the taste but adds healthy benefits of their own.

Right about that same time we start thinking about our retirement options. We could move to Florida, but really, we would miss those kids too much.

Visions of Italian pasta and pizza and Greek goodies dance through our minds when most of us consider our choices of Mediterranean menus.

But there are 22 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa encircling that sea, so just where does this diet originate? And what foods are we talking about?

First of all, the World Health Association reports the Mediterranean death rate from cardiovascular disease is half that of Americans.

And while the term “Mediterranean diet” is rather loose, it

refers to meals rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and olive oil that are low in saturated fats and high in lean sources of protein, like fish. Red wine in moderation is a bonus inclusion.

The diets of Mediterranean countries differ in the amount of total fat, olive oil, type of meat and wine intake, milk vs. cheese, and fruits and vegetables, and the rates of coronary heart disease and cancer.

It’s generally accepted that the first scientific probe of this food regimen was launched shortly after World War II in Greece by the Rockefeller Foundation in an attempt to improve the population’s health.

Researchers learned quickly that plant-based food made up almost 75% of the people’s diet.

The key elements of the Mediterranean diet — bread, olive oil and wine — were spread throughout continental Europe by monastic orders that migrated there to evangelize those peoples. Bread, oil and wine were central elements of the Christian liturgy that was being spread throughout Europe.

some nonsensical cliché about just leaving the world a better place, but with no real examples or what specifically would be better.

Later, I thought back to a philosophy class I had in college 35 years ago; a discussion was held on the value of a jar.

What if you packed it with whatever most valuable jewels you could find, or the rarest of an Earth element scientists spend their careers looking for? Was it more valuable at that point than if it was empty and still had the potential to be filled with something even more valuable? It was really a philosophical-economics argument on the value of potential, of the value of hope. Half the class held that current value — a known quantity was more

valuable than anything you could hope to fill it with.

The other half of the class argued that potential is always more valuable than anything you can hold in your hand.

We would fall into the later camp of that argument, I’d guess.

We always have room in our jars for something spectacular.

Simple summer healthy food

For a plant-based eater — there is no better time than summer. I unabashedly take any garden leftovers. Too many zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, peppers, herbs … sure, I’ll take them.

The freshest of meals with the freshest of vegetables make meals simple, flavorful and easy.

It has been a blessing to be able to gather again to celebrate moments with others that we missed last year; I don’t want to miss a minute of it and I hope you don’t either.

The nice thing about cookouts is that there is usually some healthy side dishes and fruit to go along with the grilled meat, potato salad and way

too many desserts. Don’t treat these gatherings as a food free-for-all and regret it later.

Go for the opportunity to see and engage with friends and family while still making your best food choices. Volunteer to bring a side dish and make sure it’s healthy, plus, you can always bring a veggie or black bean burger and have the host throw it on the grill for you. Simply — you do what’s important to you. No one is coming to push you — push yourself.

Get creative with a salad and make fruit the star by adding grilled peaches. Just slice in half and grill until soft.

The flavor explodes. Maybe use a base of cooked and cooled quinoa, add some fresh spinach or romaine, kalamata olives, fresh basil and bam, you have a meal. Of course, feel free to use a combination of colorful berries in place of the peaches if you desire.

Another super easy side or meal: Dilled Veggie Toast 2 cups sweet corn kernels (about 4 ears) 2 clove garlic, slice very thin 1 cup halved grape tomatoes

1 medium cucumber, quartered lengthwise and slice (or zucchini) (about 2 cups) 3 tablespoon white wine vinegar ¼ cup chopped fresh dill Ground pepper to taste 8 ounce oil-free hummus of choice 4 large slices hearty whole grain bread toasted — or hearty crackers 1. In an extra large nonstick skillet, cook corn over medium-high until just beginning to char, stirring frequently and adding water, 1 to 2 tablespoons at a time as needed to prevent sticking. Stir in garlic.

Remove from heat. Stir in tomatoes, cucumber (or zucchini) and vinegar. Stir in dill; season with pepper.

2. Spread hummus over toast slices (or crackers).

Spoon vegetable mixture over each.

Generation X, folks born between 1965 and 1980, and Generation Y, those Millennials born between 1981 and 1996, show

signs of increased disabilities as they age during a shorter lifespan than their predecessors, according to an Ohio State University research report.

The cause?

More anxiety and depression as well as increased levels of bad health behaviors, such as smoking and alcohol use, compared to the post-World War II generation.

Risking his life, Bushemi followed the Army and Marines through many battles. Bushemi, or Johnny as he was frequently called, photographed GIs in actual combat situations as well as catching them at leisure between battles.

The Army and Marines had to take control of many Japaneseheld islands where some were extremely difficult to take. To the military history buff and World War II veterans, the names of many of those islands may be readily recalled as well as the horrible toll on the men who fought there.

The Army soldiers and Marines swept through the islands of the South Pacific and Gary’s own hometown boy was with them all the way. Bushemi’s photos captured the action through the New Georgia campaign and islands, gulfs and areas with such names as Rendova Harbor and island as well as Arundel Island, Munda Point, Guadalcanal, Bougainville and many more. Thousands of troops took part in the invasions and captures of the islands and Japa-

nese enemies and thousands of troops of our Army and Marines died.

In the aftermath of the various campaigns, we must not forget that casualties from disease were also high as were psychological casualties, with over 2,500 troops being diagnosed with “war neurosis between June 30 and Sept. 30,” in 1944.

(Note: Compare this to modernday PTSD?) As the Army and Marines swept through the Pacific islands, the loss of these heroes was quite high and must never be forgotten as we thank them for preserving freedom we now enjoy, but frequently fail to appreciate.

This story only touches briefly on the events of the Pacific War Theater and I leave the reader to explore more deeply the events of that era. May God bless the troops, both men and women of World War II, and those who have served thereafter.

Leaders who made a difference %\ 720 02552: 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV There are a handful of presidents students of history and civics should get to know in understanding what made America the dominant global nation it is today.

Most folks under 40 take for granted America’s position in the world. It was no accident how we got here and understanding how our republic works.

While President Donald Trump was an easy target for his bombastic style, his presidential personality wasn’t much different from that of President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, who found himself in the Oval Office early in the 20th century due to the assassination of President William McKinley.

Republican Roosevelt became known as “T.R.” and believed in a strong Navy. He had the U.S. Navy’s pre-World War I battleships of the Great White Fleet circle the globe showing off our growing power. It was part of his Big Stick policy, as in “walk softly but carry a big stick.”

Roosevelt oversaw the mo-

mentous building of the Panama Canal, which linked the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific and cut in half the time needed to go from ocean to ocean by not having to travel around the southern tip of South America.

The Republicans originally ran T.R. for vice president in 1900 to get rid of him. As governor of New York, he had been an irritating maverick to oldguard politicians. Their plan backfired when McKinley was assassinated. As president, T.R. created havoc in both government and business with a vast variety of reforms.

Herbert Hoover was a popular post-World War I humanitarian, but he’s best remembered for being an ineffective president and gets the brunt of the blame for the Great Depression of the 1930s.

While he failed as a president, Hoover’s greatest accomplishment was being that of humanitarian. After World War I, he had organized the feeding of Europe and followed up after World War II when President Harry Truman asked him to organize the feeding of millions of Europeans left homeless and starving after that war.

Franklin D. Roosevelt has been ranked by many among America’s greatest presidents.

He served more than 12 years, guiding the nation through the dark years of the 1930s Depression and World War II, but his vice president became one of the nation’s leading leaders.

Harry Truman became known among detractors as “His Accidency” when he moved into the Oval Office after Roosevelt died a few weeks into his fourth term. The Democrat from Missouri became the only high school graduate of the century to become president.

Ironically, FDR had never told Vice President Truman about the development of the atom bomb. Truman was informed about the highly secret $2 billion World War II project after assuming office. He made the historic decision to drop the two bombs on Japan that ended the war and launched the nuclear age. It was one of the most important decisions any head of state ever made.

An estimated half-million U.S. troops and as many as 1.5 million Japanese were saved from death that, if the war continued, would have resulted

+$55< 6 7580$1 in assaulting the mainland of Japan.

Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy led us through the turbulent ‘50s and into the ‘60s.

Ike was the architect of our interstate highway system and JFK launched us to the moon.

Kennedy and his vice president, Lyndon Johnson, changed America with their quest for meaningful civil rights.

President Ronald Reagan was one of the nation’s most charismatic chief executives.

He was staunchly anti-commu-

7+(2'25( ¶7(''<· 5226(9(/7 nist and dedicated himself to defeating the Soviet Union and end the Cold War that began some four decades before his presidency.

His building up of the U.S. military resulted in outspending the Soviets, which caused their collapse. And history recalls his challenge to Russian leaders to tear down the Berlin Wall that was a concrete symbol of the rift between East and West.

Legacy Foundation awards $106,800 to address community needs in Lake County Legacy Foundation announced $106,800 in funding to nonprofit organizations serving communities in Lake County. Nineteen organizations received grants ranging from $2,000 to $22,800.

“This year, Legacy Foundation grants continued to support Lake County with a sharpened focus on the most pressing challenges our community is facing today: the impact of COVID-19, systemic racism and racial injustice, and the underinvestment and lack of infrastructure in under-resourced communities across Lake County,” said Legacy Foundation Vice President Kelly Anoe.

Adding to the possible job openings for oldsters is the fact that employers are having problems finding workers of all sorts, ranging from dishwashers to financial consultants.

Human resource pros are finding out that salt and pepper hair can be the sign of a seasoned worker with such unseen benefits as leadership, problem-solving and teamwork that complement the skills necessary for the job at hand.

And they probably enjoy working from home, a phenomenon that has risen in prominence and acceptance during the global pandemic shutdown.

Changes are racing through the job scene of late. While the supply of younger workers is diminishing because of lagging birth rate, more older

workers on staying on their jobs longer, not only to solidify their retirement finances but to stay busy and active.

Such traditional sectors as teaching and nursing that required person-to-person contact are now being handled in cyberspace, adding to the opportunities for these professionals to offer their services from home.

Workers who have become accustomed to years of reporting for work to join a team of colleagues who provide reciprocal personal and professional

support may tremble a bit when faced with the concept of toiling all by themselves in a corner of the house.

The self-employed have long recognized the advantages of working from home.

First of all is not having to dress for the office. Comfort trumps all else. And you don’t have to cope with crammed traffic to get to and from your desk.

You can sleep in if you wish and get your work done after lunch or awaken early to get things done and then enjoy

the rest of the day — have coffee with friends, visit the grandkids, bicycle through the park.

Depending on your situation, you can work a four day week and have long weekends every week.

One longtime freelance writer suggested the only drawback working on your own is that your boss gets in the shower with you.

You do have to be your own boss.

Set a schedule, don’t miss deadlines and keep your eyes

on the goals you and your employer establish. If you’re a procrastinator and need someone to look over your shoulder, working on your own may not be for you.

If you can self-start and finish your duties and chores on time, the working world is opening up as employers find home workers are just as productive as office-bound staff and there’s no need to provide expensive, high rent office space to provide their service or sell their product.

Step back in time at Delphi’s Canal Park Though its viability as a transportation mode spanned only a short period, canals played a very important *5($7 role in the (6&$3(6 develop%\ 52' .,1* ment of the Midwest and particularly Indiana. You can experience those glory days by taking a ride through history at Canal Park in Delphi.

Here, a little piece of the Wabash and Erie Canal has been refurbished and visitors can ride on “The Delphi,” a two-thirds scale canal boat, and hear colorful stories about the canal’s heyday. Don’t expect it to be pulled by a team of horses plodding along at four miles an hour like the originals because this one’s motorized.

One hundred canal boats a day crowded the port of Delphi bringing in settlers, their belongings, commercial goods and produce. The success of the Erie Canal from New York City to Buffalo spurred Indiana officials to approve the Internal Improvements Act of 1836 that appropriated $6 million for canal construction. The canal began in Fort Wayne in 1832 and, by 1837, there were 5,000 laborers at work with picks, shovels, wheelbarrows and horse-drawn slip-scoops on canals around the state.

Canal Park is more than a piece of canal. It includes a pioneer village with a blacksmith/ carpentry shop, tavern, several log cabins, school, inn and a conference center with interactive exhibits tracing the canal’s

rich history and culture. Highlight of the village is the Reed Case House built in 1844 and relocated to Canal Park in 1983.

It was owned by Reed Case, contractor for the construction of the canal through Carroll County. An interpreter, dressed in period attire as Mr. Case, conducts tours of the house.

Tickets for the boat ride and house tour can be purchased at the snack shack directly across the towpath from the house by the boat landing.

The irony of it all is that the canal boats carried the rails that were used to build the railroads, which in the end caused the demise of the canals. Railroads were faster, could carry more goods, operated in winter and were more efficient.

The original towpath at Canal Park has been turned into a hiking/biking trail. Eleven trails in all, ranging from one-half mile to one-and-a-half miles, follow the canal and through sections of town. Visitors can rent mountain and tandem bikes and family surreys. They can also tour the canal on peddle boats and kayaks.

For a colorful look into an interesting bit of Indiana history, plan a trip to Delphi. It’s open 1-4 p.m. seven days a week. Boat tours are available Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. through Labor Day. To get to Canal Park, watch for the Delphi turnoff on SR 18, which will take you right into downtown on Washington Street. Drive just a few blocks past Main Street, cross a stone bridge and turn left into Canal Park. Decluttering may not be easy, but it’s simple. Get rid of anything you don’t use.

Nothing beats the beach. Ruth Rockwell from Elkhart shows off a Elko Senior Life along the promenade of Clearwater Beach, Fla. Over the Mother’s Day holiday, she and her daughter, Katherine, flew from their respective hometowns for a lovely, mother-daughter beachfront vacation.

Clearwater Beach offers a small-town atmosphere, clear gulf waters and pristine white sand beaches. One can delight in jet-skiing, parasailing and stand-up paddle boarding on the beach’s calm waters. Cyclists and rollerbladers enjoy rolling along the beachfront promenade, which is lined with casual seafood restaurants and cafes.

When not spending time relaxing and soaking up the sun, visitors can tour the Clearwater Marine Aquarium where one of the stars of the “Dolphin Tale” movies resides, Winter the Dolphin, who is widely known for his prosthetic tail.

Another popular spot is Pier 60. Here, locals and out-of-towners alike, will find a year-round nightly sunset celebration with street performers, craft vendors, buskers and artists.

More than half believe they will ‘unretire’ (NewsUSA) Reflecting a changing post-retirement landscape, a new survey by Home Instead, Inc., franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care network, reveals that 53 percent of workers approaching retirement in the next five years believe they will likely “unretire,” or return to work.

Not only do the majority of those approaching retirement and those who have “unretired” say they will change or have changed industries, nearly 80 percent of both groups say they want to make a meaningful impact in their communities during their post-retirement years.

After money, the top motivators for returning to work among those who have retired were fighting boredom and keeping their minds sharp, while finding new challenges and fulfillment were important motivators among those pending retirement.

Encouraging older workers to explore new “unretirement” options that will fulfill these needs, Home Instead collaborated with RetirementJobs.com to introduce an online career assessment tool that asks questions about users’ skills and interests before recommending a category that might be a fit for a post-retirement career: • Caregivers (e.g., personal care aide, child care worker).

• Advisors (e.g., library assistant, tutor, administration assistant, clergy/counselor).

• Networkers (e.g., driver, retail salesperson, tour guide).

• Creatives (e.g., culinary worker, writer, graphic designer).
