7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ /2,6 720$6=(:6., )HDWXUH :ULWHU Linda Laney is the daughter of a beekeeper and she has worked with the Michiana Beekeepers Association. She knows what it is like to work with bees and recognizes the challenges of doing so.

“My dad grew up with beehives on his family farm in Alabama,” Laney said. “He took up beekeeping again later in life once our family moved to the Midwest. He had a stressful corporate job and the bees were a calming hobby for him. We have had hives for about 50 years.”

Her father, Dave Laney, 90, is still active

working with the bees with 40 hives. The family turned a hobby into a business.

As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. There are many reasons why bees are essential, said Krispn Given, an apiculture specialist with Purdue University Department of Entomology.

“Honeybees are the supreme pollinator of crops, like California almonds and the oranges we eat,” he explained. “Honeybees help plants through pollination ... the more bees pollinating, the more seeds are produced.”

“In our area, they help pollinate fruit trees, blueberries, squash and melons,” Laney said.

“If these plants are not pollinated properly, they will not bear fruit.”

a fit floor associate, a position she has held going on seven years.

She is also a personal trainer and teaches group exercises, such as body toning in the low impact program formerly known as Silver Sneakers.

During her half dozen or so years as a patron, “I liked helping people who asked me questions about how the machines work and proper form and techniques.”

Richardson, 55, works from 4:30-10 a.m. Monday through Friday, arriving half an hour before the doors open “making sure everything is nice, clean and tidy for our patrons,” she said.

Her positive demeanor suits her job well. “I try to help the patrons get healthy and keep them motivated,” she said. “I try to find ways to make it fun. If I can make it fun and make them feel welcome, they are going to come back. I always answer their questions and encourage them.”

Sometimes, as they say, the going gets tough. Richardson recalled coming alongside some patrons and empathizing with their tears of frustration. But, she said, “It makes me feel good

She has received gratifying feedback “when you have people come up to you and say, ‘I wouldn’t have set foot in the gym unless I had spoken to you.’

I’m glad I motivated them and helped them enough to give them a shot. They just needed that extra push of encouragement.”

Richardson deals with all ages of clientele, the oldest of whom is “close to 90.” She also works with 14 and 15 year olds and said parents are “starting to bring in young kids to teach them the proper ways to use the machines.” She said the youngsters can use the facilities for working out after an orientation session “as long as they have a parent with them. Sometimes the parents work out with them.”

She offered some advice for seniors hoping to get into the exercise habit. “Usually when people ask me I tell them that keeping your body moving —

even just moving up out of your chair — is always a good thing.

Take baby steps, one step at a time, and if you get discouraged, give me a call.

“The hardest part is just coming through the door (of the YMCA), and if you get discouraged, give me a call. This is a place for friendship.”

Richardson grew up with a passion for running. She was on her high school track team in Anderson and also played basketball. She has participated in “too many 5Ks and 10Ks to count.”

During her free time now, she enjoys hiking in the mountains and has done so on a mountain range near Sedona, Ariz., and the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. She also likes kayaking and SCUBA diving. She and her husband, Randy, live in North Liberty with their five children in a blended family.

“Cry It Out” by Molly Smith Metzler is a comedy with dark edges that takes an honest look at the adventure of being a new mom.

“For most of us, the term ‘cry it out’ is the practice of letting your newborn baby cry themselves to sleep,” said Director Deb Swerman. “But for these ladies, ‘cry it out’ is a space they have created — a small patch of yard, mapped out by how far their baby monitors will reach.”

When Jessie has her baby, she leaves a glamorous Manhattan lawyer career for dirty diapers and sleepless nights.

Desperate for companionship outside of her newborn, she meets a new mom and the two strike up a friendship, sharing both the joy and the stress of having a baby. Then they receive a request to have another mom join them. Only this mom lives in the mansion on the cliff and couldn’t possibly have any struggles. Could she? The duo accepts the wealthy woman reluctantly into their small circle.

This production reflects the absurdities of being a new mom and the power of female friendship that women from all classes can relate to.

“They drink coffee, confide in each other, laugh and ultimately have to decide how their babies will be cared for,” said Swerman. “Social and monetary status, as well as the tugging of their hearts, will decide the fate of each of their babies.”

“Pesticides are used on many large crops, such as corn, soybeans and tomatoes. Honeybees and other pollinating insects can be exposed to these treatments and the chemicals are carried back to the hives,” she said. “Some of these same chemicals are used in our neighborhoods on lawns and gardens.”

While beekeepers like Laney are trained to handle bees and hives, many people are afraid of being stung. That is another misconception, the experts said.

“Honeybees, like most bees, will sting in self-defense when provoked,” Laney explained.

“But they tend to be more docile than wild bees. Because they communicate through pheromones, they can sense if someone is agitated or nervous, so it is best to remain calm

around them.”

Sometimes homeowners experience a swarming of bees.

This is not something to be alarmed at, Given said. When it happens, an exterminator is not the answer but patience is.

Given said the bees may stick around for a day or two before moving on to find a new home.

“We share the world with all types of bees,” Laney said. “I think it’s best that we respect their boundaries.”

Music completes accordion player’s life %\ /2,6 720$6=(:6., )HDWXUH :ULWHU To say that music has been an important part of Bill Schmitt’s life is an understatement. Since second-grade music, especially the accordion, has been a part of defining who he is.

“On Long Island at that time, lots of kids were taking the accordion because of our ethnic backgrounds and the

“Lawrence Welk Show,” and we thought it was cool, at least until rock ‘n’ roll became the coin of the realm,” Schmitt said.

He took lessons for 10 years and performed at weddings and anniversary parties and then with other musicians in an allaccordion band.

“The accordion has always been beloved in communities around the world as ‘a band in a box,’ where you could provide melody and bass accompani-

ment and rhythm so people could dance and sing with this very portable instrument,” Schmitt said. “Today’s electronic accordions do an even better job of sounding like different band instruments.”

Schmitt shares his love of the accordion as one of the instructors at The Music Village in downtown South Bend. This nonprofit organization operates under the philosophy “that where the arts flourish, so do people and communities.” The center is open to people of all ages and skill levels.

About four years ago, Schmitt said he was introduced to the Music Village by a professor at Notre Dame.

Schmitt is a former journalism instructor, and he is currently an adjunct professor at Holy Cross College.

“He plays guitar and he introduced me to the Village’s jamming group, and it was like a dream come true,” Schmitt recalled. “This group brought me into its own community and into more of the life of the South Bend community and into ways I could be of service through music, including teaching.”

Since that encounter, Schmitt now serves as a board member for the organization and started a podcast about local music activities. After a career in communications, he said he can embrace the Music Village’s mission.

According to Schmitt, there is no age limit on learning to play a musical instrument.

“It’s never too late to learn and a number of my students have been in their 60s and 70s,” he said. They either want to use retirement time to learn something new or to pick up an instrument they loved at one time but has been in the basement closet for too long. It’s not about becoming a virtuoso — it’s about giving expression to a side of yourself that deserves to be brought out for your own sake and for the sake of people you want to see smile.”

This will be a temporary move until the new facility, Caring Connections at Milton Village in Roseland, is completed. Construction for the new facility is scheduled to be complete before the end of the year.

Get creative with a salad and make fruit the star by adding grilled peaches. Just slice in half and grill until soft. The flavor explodes. Maybe use a base of cooked and cooled quinoa, add some fresh spinach or romaine, kalamata olives, fresh basil and bam, you have a meal. Of course, feel free to use a combination of colorful berries in place of the peaches if you desire.

Another super easy side or meal: Dilled Veggie Toast 2 cups sweet corn kernels (about 4 ears)

2 clove garlic, slice very thin 1 cup halved grape tomatoes 1 medium cucumber, quartered lengthwise and slice (or zucchini) (about 2 cups) 3 tablespoon white wine vinegar ¼ cup chopped fresh dill Ground pepper to taste 8 ounce oil-free hummus of choice 4 large slices hearty whole grain bread toasted — or hearty crackers 1. In an extra large nonstick skillet, cook corn over mediumhigh until just beginning to char, stirring frequently and adding water, 1 to 2 tablespoons at a time as needed to prevent sticking. —o— It was quite by accident that I met Peter J. DeKever after moving back to the Michiana area several years ago after living in Myrtle Beach, S.C., for some seven years.

My longtime and deep interest in history, writing (29 years now with Senior Life) and poetry from my college days drew me into a close and mutual interest friendship with DeKever. My further friendship with DeKever and his dad, Joe, developed another deep bonding with Pete and Joe; that of working with them in their developing the Mishawaka Historical Museum at 121 S. Main St. in Mishawaka.

Numerous antique items have already been donated to this museum from my own personal collections; items directly related to Mishawaka history. Knowing my interest in history, writing and poetry, DeKever presented me with a special gift a couple of years ago from this Mishawaka author; a copy of his authored book titled “Rose Hartwick Thorpe and 150 Years of Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight.”

DeKever brings to light the poetry,

life and times of this forgotten and famous Mishawaka poet who became famous due to her “Curfew…” poem in her day as a young child.

On a balmy Saturday afternoon, DeKever drove me to the site of the Hartwick home, which has long been demolished in favor of a new church.

The Hartwick home faced Union Street to the east at the corner of Fourth Street. How appropriate it is that this church has in its bell tower, a bell that is hanging and situated directly over the site of the old Hartwick home.

Hartwick Thorpe, as a young child, became famous worldwide for her poem, “Curfew…,” which focused on a

Melichar: Getting his exercise with and without machines %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU Recalling his childhood days in South Bend, where exercise meant “going to the city park and playing all day,” Raymond Melichar invoked the common ironclad rule during that halcyon era, “When the streetlights came on, you went home.”

Melichar, who will turn 84 on Aug. 17, said he has “been involved in activities my whole life.” He no longer worries about streetlight curfews and hasn’t slowed down much since the 1940s.

He spends 60 minutes a day Monday through Saturday spinning the wheels of a stationary bike at the YMCA of Greater Michiana and another 15 to 20 minutes on a rowing machine. “Sunday is my day of rest,” he said.

He has been a member of the YMCA for more than 35 years, having patronized the location on Northside Boulevard until it closed two years ago. Now he frequents the new YMCA facility on East Walter Street, south of the city.

Melichar graduated from Indiana State University in Terre Haute and earned his master’s degree at Indiana University Bloomington. “In the fall of 1960, all around the United States, they were desperate for teachers because of the increased enrollment from baby boomers,” he said. “ I started teaching math that year and worked for eight different superintendents in my 40 years of teaching.

“I retired in 2000 after 40 years of teaching, the same year as Dr. Virginian Calvin.

She and I went out the same time.”

His teaching career accommodated his multifaceted involvement in physical activities, which took him around the globe. “As the saying goes, the three best reasons to teach are June, July and August, so every summer I managed to do a lot of world traveling.”

He participated in a climb of 19,340-foot-high Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. “It took us six days to go up and down.

We carried a small backpack and the guides provided the meals. We slept outside in tents and sleeping bags, and

on the final night we slept on a glacier.”

He has also gone snorkeling off the Galapagos Islands, completed a three-week 500mile bicycle trip from Beijing to Shanghai “with some side trips” and has walked along the top of the Great Wall of China.

“I have always felt not just the physical benefits after a workout, but I feel more mental clarity,” he said. “And at the Y there is the social aspect, where I can share ideas with friends I would not have known otherwise.”

He advised other seniors to get away from the TV and join a contingent of others seeking to improve their health. “It is important to get involved with a group of like-minded individuals,” he said. “They have classes at the Y and pickleball is so popular now. Think of how good you’ll feel.”

Then, with the grin that wiped 70 years of age off his countenance, he added, “and after working out you don’t feel guilty stopping at the Dairy Queen,” as he made his way out the door to enjoy a chocolate chip Blizzard.

Historical Hindsight —

Pandemics are nothing new %\ 720 02552: 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Global infectious disease outbreaks, or pandemics, have been logged all through recorded history.

Most seniors have survived several, whether they’re aware of it or not.

Over the past century alone, the world has endured no less than seven pandemics.

The first and most deadly was the 1918-20 epidemic known as the Spanish Flu. It was so named because Spain is generally regarded as its starting point. The virus killed more than 500 million people — more than 25% of the world’s population at that time and more than were killed in World War I. Things were quiet after that until 1956, or early 1957, when the first cases of the so-called Asian Flu were reported in Guizhou, southern China. An estimated 4 million people died around the globe from this flu and the U.S. stock market lost 15% of its value in the second half of 1957 as the nation sank into a recession. In the United Kingdom, the government paid out some 10 million pounds in sickness benefits and several factories and mines had to close.

The Hong Kong Flu hit our shores a decade later. It was followed by the Russian Flu, which emerged in 1977, killing more than 500,000 worldwide.

The Bird Flu and Swine Flu lasted about 19 months in 2009 and 2010, claiming up to 700,000 lives worldwide.

The varied strains of what we know as the “traditional” flu kills as many as 650,000 people annually, but that figure goes more or less unnoticed in the news media.

Many folks have become accustomed to dodging the flu by getting an annual shot to get through flu season, which runs from late fall to early spring.

More than 25 million deaths around the globe have now been attributed to COVID-19 — still a low figure compared to the 500 million victims of Spanish Flu. The first confirmed death of the present pandemic was Jan. 9, 2020, in Wuhan, China. The first reported U.S. death was a month later: Feb. 6.

Reports indicate outbreaks are still serious in some South American and African countries as well as India, which recently had been reporting as many as 12,000 deaths daily.

The coronavirus shutdown has resulted in significant social and economic disruption around the globe, including the largest worldwide recession since the Great Depression. It has brought widespread commodity shortages, exacerbated by panic buying and agricultural and supply disruption.

If there’s any good news from this pandemic, it might be that there’s been a decrease in emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases.

Christian Davis: Being found after a 10-year search %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU Dr. Christian Davis is quite intelligent and remembers a lot.

But perhaps the most significant memory he still vividly recalls — and can “pinpoint within minutes the exact time” — is the moment Jesus Christ ended Davis’ fervent, albeit roundabout, decade-long search for truth.

Davis, 64, grew up in a Presbyterian church, attending “almost every Sunday for most of my young life.” As early as sixth-grade Sunday school class, however, he encountered biblical teachings that, to him, lacked coherence.

In addition, “I can’t remember anyone in that church claiming that Isaiah or Genesis or Daniel or Revelation might actually be true.

“So I learned to trust my own mind, but I did not learn to trust the Bible or the Holy Spirit or Jesus.”

He went through the motions

of getting confirmed, parroting predigested answers to the elders’ questions. But at age 14, Davis left the church, deciding “there was nothing worthwhile for me there,” though he now concedes “it was the church and I who were at fault, not Jesus.”

That exodus prompted his 10-year odyssey. “I was searching for myself, for knowledge, for satisfaction — for anything but a relationship with the real God.” He dabbled in the worldly wisdom of Plato, the Bhagavad Gita and “various New Age cults and gimmicks.” He spent many hours among the library stacks “searching for truth in all the books I could find.”

Also gifted in music history and theory, Davis consulted eight different metrical versions of Psalm 51 while researching for his master’s thesis. “I can’t say I knew what it meant, but I’m sure it was working on my soul.”

Then came the epiphany in his dorm room at The Pennsylvania State University. “It wasn’t a

coincidence I woke up at 2:30 a.m. on Nov. 18, 1981, looked back over my life, and realized I was going nowhere and, even if I was, it wouldn’t matter in 100 or 1,000 years.

“With no other idea what to do about it, I simply prayed, ‘God, if you’re there, please let me know it.’ ” He then discerned a presence in the room. “None of my physical senses perceived anything different, but at that moment, I received a sixth sense, a spiritual sense, that perceived Jesus, the Lord of the universe, in that room,” he recalled.

“I can’t say what he looked like or what his voice sounded like, but I knew he was there, he was real and everything the Bible I had read as a kid said about him must be true.

“I neither had nor wanted a choice. I had to offer my life to him. And in the multitude of his tender mercies, he took it.”

The best ceremonies – whether they are religious or secular, modern or traditional, casual or formal — are grounded in authenticity and are a true re-

flection of the life that has been lived.

Here is what a family I recently worked with said: “My father lived with integrity and authenticity. A religious funeral for him would have been an uncomfortable contradiction to how he chose to live his life. But when he died, we still needed a place to go to express our emotions and I knew that a party or a few speeches was not enough. I am grateful that you were able to help us with a ceremony in a safe and meaningful space complete with music, eulogies and a touching ritual.”

They chose to have family members hold his treasures during the eulogies, then each brought them up, individually by family members. At the end, they encircled his urn, sur-

rounding him with their love and memories one last time.

They poured his favorite wine and toasted to the man who had forever changed their lives. It was a truly beautiful, inclusive and healing experience for all who attended.

Marquette University Davis has attended Christian Center Church in South Bend for the last three years and has taught an adult Bible study there for the past six months.

“What I care about is God’s word and serving God,” he said.

His hobbies include running, canoeing, fishing, cross-country skiing and gardening. “I have a self-disciplined nature and I just keep going. I get up at 4:50 a.m., run, shower, eat breakfast and pray.”

On the road to the village of Hana %\ )<//,6 +2&.0$1 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Just as the queasiness in my stomach from the continuous onslaught of curves and cutbacks along the narrow uphill road began to subside, we careened around another 180-degree hairpin bend.

The sight of the first of several quiet waterfalls sliding down sheltered creviced cleavages alongside the road managed to wash away most of my reservations.

We were on the road that winds its way along the northern coast of this Hawaiian island from the rustic village of Paia to Hana on its eastern tip. It’s only 52 miles long, but the series of twists, turns, dips and dives can take up to three hours to negotiate. It’s the vistas of lush greenery, ocean blues, rock, white water foaming up over the shores and waterfalls bubbling over craggy cliffs that make it a worthwhile adventure.

So is taking time to stop for a bit to sit beneath a banana tree enveloped by giant 6-foot-long leaves. And looking out at the wrinkled brown-hued mountains lacerated with ridges created by 2 1/2 million years of rainfall.

A sign proclaiming “Narrow Winding Road Next 30 Miles” gets lost in the forest of sugar cane and coconut trees and pineapple fields. Hana Highway is certainly a misnomer considering it’s stretched over

600 curves and 56 one-lane bridges.

Nearby Kaumahina State Park combines a Garden of Eden setting with the more practical appeal of restrooms and picnic tables. A stone-cut nature trail opens the way to a dip in a natural swimming pool framed by waterfall and rock.

If you’re a flora and fauna buff, a stop at the Keanae Arboretum is a must. It’s as close to a Hawaiian jungle as you can get, with a wealth of native trees, plants and flowers.

Puaakaa State Park is the next stop with a footpath that winds in and out along streams and overlooks. Overlapping paths through multicolored bushes lead to a consortium of pools and waterfalls. A swing on the Tarzan-like hanging vines overhead adds a dimension to the tropical swimming hole most backyard pools lack.

At the rise of another double-U bend in the road is a small roadside stand proffering bananas, papayas, guavas, coconuts and pineapples. We watched the owner, machete in hand, traipse down a nearby path and return with bunches of bananas to meet the lunchtime demand.

Waianapanapa State Park temporarily transports you into an otherworldly excursion before entering the tranquil town of Hana. A steep-stepped path meanders beneath gnarled branches so thick with growth that an eerie darkness prevails even on a sunny day.

Hidden within the rainforest vegetation are cavernous rock formations that envelop crisp freshwater pools connected by lava tunnels.

Light and color return with the approach to Hana. Large trees with red-blossom canopies, rainbow-lined sidewalks and green-laden hillsides announce your arrival.

A visit to the Hasegawa General Store, immortalized in a 1964 song of the same name

by Paul Weston, jolted me out of the tranquil reverie engendered by the town. The small shop, known for its awesome accumulation of every conceivable item, is so cluttered and cramped that it conflicted with the airy openness of the natural beauty all around.

Still, it is a worthwhile stop, if only to pick up some Dramamine — the store’s best-selling item — for the ride back.

He’s normally quite sparing in his praise, but Marsh once %\ 5$1'$/ could barely & +,// contain his $ %RRPHU %ODVW enthusiasm 7R 7KH 3DVW when he reviewed a Marvin Gaye single and proclaimed it to be “the greatest piece of music ever written in favor of the survival of the environment on the greatest Black pop album ever made.”

That 45 was the now-classic

“Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology),” which was lifted from Gaye’s legendary 1971 LP “What’s Going On,” the first album in his extensive Motown catalog to sell a million copies.

When Motown owner Berry Gordy, Jr., was approached about “Mercy Mercy Me,” he was unfamiliar with the term ecology and had to have it explained to him. Gordy was always a tough sell about including anything political or controversial on his records and always kept an eye on the mainstream sales charts in seeking as wide an audience as possible. Initially, Gordy argued against releasing Gaye’s thoughtprovoking “What’s Going On?,” as he feared it could run the risk of alienating Gaye’s fans who would be expecting Gaye’s usual pop/ soul product such as “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.”

But Gaye was growing as an artist and he wanted to go deeper than his previous releases. “I began to reevaluate my whole concept of what I wanted my music to say,” he explained later to Rolling Stone. “I wanted to write songs that would reach the souls of people. I wanted them to take a look at what was happening in the world.” Industrialization, corporate greed and a lack of environmental concern all fueled Gaye’s interest in creating a thoughtful message rather than another commercial ballad.

Gaye’s offering arrived a year

after the first Earth Day brought concern about our stewardship of the Earth, so his tune served as a clarion call for us to face responsibilities to our home. In an interview with Sounds magazine, Marvin said, “I’d love to become only interested in knowledge and power that this Earth will give us, if we’re only willing to put in the time and effort … The power’s here. It’s in the rocks, it’s in the air, it’s in the animals … I would like to become a man of power.”

Contrary to Gordy’s fears, “Mercy Mercy Me” peaked at Number Four on Billboard’s Hot 100; Gaye was the sole composer of a work considered by many to be the most meaningful anthem ever in regards to pollution, global warming and our deteriorating environment.

In 2002, his creation won a prestigious Grammy Hall of Fame Award.

Gaye’s lyrics pulled no punches when he delivered his ethereal, thought-provoking lament of polluted skies, poisonous winds, oceanic oil slicks and mercury-contaminated fish, as well as the realization that, sadly, far too many creatures had become endangered. Those elements, and the increasing overpopulation of our planet, inspired Marvin’s tough rhetorical question: “How much more abuse from man can she stand?”

How much more indeed, Mr. Gaye.

Step back in time at Delphi’s Canal Park Though its viability as a transportation mode spanned only a short period, canals played a very important role in the *5($7 develop(6&$3(6 ment of the %\ 52' .,1* Midwest and particularly Indiana. You can experience those glory days by taking a ride through history at Canal Park in Delphi.

Here, a little piece of the Wabash and Erie Canal has been refurbished and visitors can ride on “The Delphi,” a twothirds scale canal boat, and hear colorful stories about the canal’s heyday. Don’t expect it to be pulled by a team of horses plodding along at four miles an hour like the originals because this one’s motorized.

One hundred canal boats a day crowded the port of Delphi bringing in settlers, their belongings, commercial goods and produce. The success of the Erie Canal from New York City to Buffalo spurred Indiana officials to approve the Internal Improvements Act of 1836 that appropriated $6 million for canal construction. The canal began in Fort Wayne in 1832 and, by 1837, there were 5,000 laborers at work with picks, shovels, wheelbarrows and horse-drawn slip-scoops on canals around the state.

Canal Park is more than a piece of canal. It includes a pioneer village with a blacksmith/carpentry shop, tavern, several log cabins, school, inn and a conference center with interactive exhibits tracing the canal’s rich history and culture.

Highlight of the village is the Reed Case House built in 1844 and relocated to Canal Park in 1983. It was owned by Reed Case, contractor for the con-

Nothing beats the beach. Ruth Rockwell from Elkhart shows off a Elko Senior Life along the promenade of Clearwater Beach, Fla. Over the Mother’s Day holiday, she and her daughter, Katherine, flew from their respective hometowns for a lovely, mother-daughter beachfront vacation.

Clearwater Beach offers a small-town atmosphere, clear gulf waters and pristine white sand beaches. One can delight in jet-skiing, parasailing and stand-up paddle boarding on the beach’s calm waters. Cyclists and rollerbladers enjoy rolling along the beachfront promenade, which is lined with casual seafood restaurants and cafes.

When not spending time relaxing and soaking up the sun, visitors can tour the Clearwater Marine Aquarium where one of the stars of the “Dolphin Tale” movies resides, Winter the Dolphin, who is widely known for his prosthetic tail.

Another popular spot is Pier 60. Here, locals and out-of-towners alike, will find a year-round nightly sunset celebration with street performers, craft vendors, buskers and artists.

struction of the canal through Carroll County. An interpreter, dressed in period attire as Mr. Case, conducts tours of the house. Tickets for the boat ride and house tour can be purchased at the snack shack directly across the towpath from the house by the boat landing.

The irony of it all is that the canal boats carried the rails that were used to build the railroads, which in the end caused the demise of the canals. Railroads were faster, could carry more goods, operated in winter and were more efficient.

The original towpath at Canal Park has been turned into a hiking/biking trail.

Eleven trails in all, ranging from one-half mile to one-anda-half miles, follow the canal and through sections of town.

Visitors can rent mountain and tandem bikes and family surreys. They can also tour the canal on peddle boats and kayaks.

For a colorful look into an interesting bit of Indiana history, plan a trip to Delphi. It’s open 1-4 p.m. seven days a week.

Boat tours are available Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. through Labor Day. To get to Canal Park, watch for the Delphi turnoff on S.R. 18, which will take you right into downtown on Washington Street. Drive just a few blocks past Main Street, cross a stone bridge and turn left into Canal Park. Soon, in a puff of pink smoke, the striking beauty was set free — and that’s when the fun began.

The show’s success meant keeping network censors busy trying to maintain a morally upright offering. Even though Jeannie slept in her bottle and Nelson in his bed, it could never be shown that the bottle was in the captain’s bedroom. (They weren’t married until the fifth and final year of the show.)

Also, Eden wasn’t supposed to expose her navel, although it did appear occasionally. Along the way, some morality-oriented gatekeepers groused about her parading around in a “nightie.”

Eden dismissed that, explaining, “It’s what she wore during the day. That was her dress, that was her uniform.” Finally, some feminists protested that Eden subjugated herself to Hagman. This brought about her miffed response: “She called him ‘master,’ but who was the real master there? She was … She wasn’t his subject; she was his equal.”

Hagman’s solo star turn would arrive later when, in 1978, he became infamous as the ruthless oil baron J.R. Ewing on the CBS-TV nighttime soap-opera “Dallas.” Its success allowed him to abandon comedy.

Jeannie creator Sidney Sheldon (later the author of 18 hit novels) has admitted that not all went swimmingly on the “I Dream of Jeannie” set during its five year run. “The problem was Larry Hagman,” Sheldon has candidly admitted. “He wanted to be the star … (But) It was Barbara who was getting all the magazine covers and interviews.

Larry wanted to show the world that he could be as successful as his mother … I began to write scripts to build up Larry’s character and make him more prominent. But when an actor is in a show with a scantily clad actress as beautiful and enticing as Barbara Eden, it is very difficult to become the star.”
