She knows what it is like to work with bees and recognizes the challenges of doing so. “My dad grew up with beehives on his family farm in Alabama,” Laney said. “He took up beekeeping again later in life once our family moved to the Midwest. He had a stressful corporate job and the bees were a calming hobby for him. We have had hives for about 50 years.” Her father, Dave Laney, 90, is still active

working with the bees with 40 hives. The family turned a hobby into a business. As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. There are many reasons why bees are essential, said Krispn Given, an apiculture specialist with Purdue University Department of Entomology. “Honeybees are the supreme pollinator of crops, like California almonds and the oranges we eat,” he explained. “Honeybees help plants through pollination ... the more bees pollinating, the more seeds are produced.” “In our area, they help pollinate fruit trees, blueberries, squash and melons,” Laney said. “If these plants are not pollinated properly, they will not bear fruit.” Given said that there are many misconceptions about bees and the honey produced in hives.
