Tattoos over 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ 0$5,66$ 6:($7/$1' 6WDII :ULWHU Tattooing has been practiced across the globe since Neolithic times, as there is evidence of it in mummified preserved skin, ancient art and archaeological record. As years pass, tattoos have only increased in popularity. According to research done by the Pew Research Center, a quarter of adults aged 50 to 64 and 13 percent of those 65 and older have at least one tattoo. The number even continues to climb. Jake Kinsey has been a tattoo artist for 30 years, owning a shop in downtown Goshen with his wife, Jessica, for six years. Adam Mersey has been a tattoo artist for 23 years and is a traveling artist, guest appearing in shops across the county, state and nation. They have met a lot of people, inked a lot of skin and have a lot of advice. “My biggest advice is to make sure the artist is comfortable in the style you are wanting,” Mersey said, “if you want big, bold, beautiful colors, you do not want to book with a linework artist.” “Check out the shop once or twice before you book,” Kinsey suggested, “you want to be sure you mesh with the artist and you both have the same vision for the tattoo.” Most shops have their portfolios on Facebook for clients to review. However, both artists suggested going into the shop and meeting the artist beforehand to make sure you personally mesh. Visiting the shop allows you to see for yourself if the shop is clean or not, because “if they do not clean the shop, they don’t clean their equipment.” “Do not take the cheap way out,” Mersey urged, “good tattoos are expensive. It can be daunting to pay a couple hundred dollars but I promise it is worth it. Invest in your tattoos, it’s going to be on you forever.”

“Do not take the cheap route,” Kinsey agreed, “cheap tattoos are almost always bad tattoos.” This is something Kinsey firmly believes. as a “cheap tattoos aren’t good and good tattoos aren’t cheap” tapestry hangs on the wall of the tattoo studio in the shop. Tattoo prices factor in a lot of variables, including size, color, equipment and time. Artists that have years of experience tend to charge for that experience. “Tattooing mature skin is not necessarily more difficult than tattooing any other type of skin, but that is probably just my experience talking. I probably would not suggest going to an artist that just graduated from their apprenticeship,” Mersey explained, “do not let the fear of pain stop you from the experience. Being tattooed is an experience like no other. It’s so personal and powerful.” Mersey described most tattoos as having the pain of continuous bee stings or, in meatier areas, having a plastic knife firmly drug across your skin. Although everyone has different pain tolerances, he promises “the euphoria of being a bad*** will outweigh any pain.” “Don’t be afraid to ask questions,” Kinsey said, “this is our lives, we love talking about it.” “Don’t be afraid to speak up,” Mersey agreed, “if the tattoo is not how you imagined, I want to know. Even if it’s a miniscule fix. If it’s not perfect to you, it’s not perfect to me.” This is another reason to scout the artist before the appointment to ensure your personalities mesh. If you feel uncomfortable speaking to them, they should not be tattooing you. “As long as you like the tattoo, who cares?” Mersey pointed out. “We hang wallpaper, posters and paint the walls of our houses. Why not decorate our bodies?”
