The program, established seven years ago as part of a greater effort between the LIVESTRONG Foundation and the YMCA to provide assistance and support to cancer survivors on a local level, will offer additional courses from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 30 through Nov. 17, and from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 20 through Dec. 8. “There’s a lot of help for cancer survivors when they are first diagnosed and going through treatment,” said Susan Potter, program coordinator and coach. “Once in remission, there’s this sense of ‘What now?’; as a result they are emotionally, physically and spiritually drained and in such a different place than they were before their diagnosis.” Participants will complete an intake session with one of the coaches to establish a baseline for their individualized training plan. This allows the coaches to meet the participant at their current fitness level while accounting for age, background and treatment. To join, participants must be 18 years of age or older and have

To verify their ability to safely complete each exercise, participants are required to obtain a release from their physician. “Some people don’t have the strength to lift 10 pounds on the machine or walk without a walker,” said Potter. “There are lots of reasons why people couldn’t do a certain exercise or use a certain machine, so we learn different modifications to help them.” Weeks one and two will have participants complete paperwork, tour the facility and meet for orientation. “The four physical components we focus on as a group are strength, flexibility, balance and cardio,” said Potter, who tracks each individual’s progress by conducting assessments

at the beginning and conclusion of each program. “It’s amazing to see the amount of progress people make in just 12 weeks, and it’s always encouraging to witness someone get themselves back.” Becky, a current participant, no longer feels like a “sick” person. “I feel stronger and full of vitality,” she said. “My endurance has improved 1,000 percent, and I even go to workout on nonclass days.” The program also strives to meet each participant’s emotional, relational and spiritual needs. “We currently have five men who offer spiritual encouragement as volunteer chaplains,” said Potter. “It’s nothing preachy, just conversations

and prayer offers.” Potter’s goal for each participant is to build up to a 30-minute workout. “We start them at two minutes, five minutes or 10 minutes on the cardio machine, bike or treadmill and from there we build up to our goal,” Potter said. “We then introduce different group exercise options halfway through the program. Sometimes its scary to do a different class or group if you’ve never done it before, so we have the class do it together.” At graduation, participants receive a free one-year family membership to Parkview Warsaw YMCA. “We want them to graduate in 12 weeks,” Potter said, “but we also want them to maintain that lifestyle and routine.”
