Co-creation the basis for success of USF Jesters

When Allison Ballard took the position of director of the University of Saint Francis Jesters program in 2008, it wasn’t because someone in her life had intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD). It was because, as a teaching artist, her personal mission is to help those who don’t identify as an artist have a meaningful art experience.

“I was aware of the Jesters (the program started in 1978), but I was totally unaware of its scope,” began Ballard. “That first year I was more of a witness to the whole process than anything else. I watched and took time to tune in to the participants to get a feel of how they worked, their reactions to certain situations, their capacity to take direction and what talents they brought to the program.

“We didn’t focus on co-creation as much as we do now,” she continued. “I feel that relying on the participants to come up with ideas, concepts, dialog and art gets them fully invested and is the backbone of the program. It’s the reason for its success. Ideas for the original show that was presented March 12 and 13 came from participants asking, ‘What if video game characters Mario and Luigi could become real?’”

According to Ballard, she and her staff begin meeting with participants the first Saturday after Labor Day to start mining and harvesting ideas for the show.

“One year,” she said. “Someone asked if the show could be about telling the truth. Working together we came up with a show we entitled ‘Truth Be Told’ with characters playing parts of white lies, lies of omission and other untruths. The goal was to stress the importance of telling

the truth.

“Celebrating gratitude was the subject of our 40th anniversary show entitled ‘Hear and Now.’ Participants studied the Sistine Chapel and drew images of God that were projected on the auditorium ceiling. They wrote short pieces on what they thought God would say to humanity and did voice-overs of God speaking to the audience. Another show was based on their recollections of home.”

Ballard says her job is to cultivate their willingness and trust, build their confidence, help them make choices and encourage them to share the spotlight with others.

She offered, “There are no stars in our shows. I have to get them to come to the understanding that it takes all of their ideas and all of them working together to produce the magic that is the Jesters.”

When she began directing the program in 2008 there were only about 35 participants. After several years it grew to more than 80. Seventy-one were in this year’s production. As the pro-

gram grew she built a program team.

“I simply could not do it myself,” said Ballard. “Now we have a group of qualified people who work together well and with the participants. The work comes with a lot of challenges and frustrations,” she said, “but we’re grateful for the support of the university, for the families and caregivers and our donors and funders.”

Ballard holds a master of arts in dance/movement therapy from Columbia College in Chicago and is certified as a Music Together teacher, a drum circle facilitator and has 30 years of experience teaching creative movement and rhythm to children, youths, adults and people with special needs.

By CATHY SHOUSE Feature Writer When most of the cold weather is in the rearview mirror, many people think about spring activities. For Joyce Mitchell of Kendallville, gardening is at the top of her mind — and it’s a family affair. Mitchell began gardening as a child with her grandparents and is now a grandparent herself, guiding her children and grandchildren with gardening.

By March, Mitchell had already stocked up on a variety of seeds through the mail. Showing them to her daughter, Dawn Crandall, was part of the fun.

“It’s nice to talk about gardening and think about it,” Mitchell said. ‘I’ve started to get the peat moss, soil and cow manure. My favorite part is choosing the seeds and deciding what to plant.

My next favorite is harvesting.”

Crandall, who home-schools

her two boys, writes novels and helps her husband renovate their home, had not begun any gardening. “She’ll probably help me.

I never know what I’m doing,” Crandall said with a laugh.

Over the years, Mitchell has gone full circle since starting with vegetables at her grandparents’ big garden, where she learned to hoe and pick, and also freeze corn and can tomatoes.

These days, she continues to learn, accessing the internet, mixing the old with the new.

She is currently studying comfrey, a plant that comes up annually and reaches 3 feet tall.

She has watched YouTube videos on what to do with it and other plants, and has ordered special seeds from an Etsy shop online.

“I got the comfrey from my husband’s great-grandmother’s property,” she said. “It has medicinal properties and is good for aches and pains. Last year I dried it and infused it in oil,

then heated it.” It’s said to treat bruises and help with the joints.

When Mitchell was a parent of three small children and also in the workforce, she went through a time where she mainly grew flowers. Her adult sons, Clint and Matt Renkenberger, also live in the area.

“I got flower starts from my parents,” she said. “My favorite flowers are probably the irises, peonies, lavender and something called balloon flowers.”

In the past ten years, she’s gotten back into growing vegetables, in the ground and in containers.

Last summer, she had a container garden of vegetables of 20 containers that held green beans and tomatoes, among others.

Mitchell, a graduate of East Noble High School, has been married to husband Jim for 26 years. She has three grandchildren, and although the littlest isn’t quite ready to be introduced to gardening, her two young grandsons are.

“The grandsons like to water,” she said. “They have watering cans. I think all children like the water hose.”

Not everything is as successful as she’d like. “Last year, we grew carrots,” she said. “We didn’t have that many. I got some to grow but not all of them.”

Her grandsons look to eat vegetables from the vine, especially cherry tomatoes. “If I don’t watch ’em, they’ll be picking on things that aren’t ready,” Mitchell said with a laugh.

A dozen books in and still writing at 76

Gloria Doty has been intrigued by all things Western since she was young. In 2016, it was only natural that her first published novel would be an inspirational cowboy romance, “Bring A Cowboy Home.”

“I’m a Texan who lives in Indiana,” Doty joked. “I have always loved the west. My dad read Zane Grey. We traveled out west. I love

Texans. They’ve always been in my heart.”

Doty’s novel launched a series of four romances that she published in four months, all contemporary Christian fiction romances. Set in the real town of Magnolia, Texas, where one of her children lives, the words simply flowed from her fingertips.

She even had a book signing in Magnolia.

Her other books have dealt with a character’s death in a car crash and a character coping with disfiguring scars, which she said she includes because “those things happen in your life.”

Doty turned 76 in February and believes in always having goals, noting, “I have about 10 things to finish by my next birthday. I’m a realist. If I don’t get done, that’s okay. I won’t get depressed.” Her list includes riding a horse, learning a second language, and dance lessons.

Plus, there are more writing projects.

She’s also written devotionals and a nonfiction book, “Not Different Enough,” which is about living with her daughter who is on the autism spectrum and has intellectual challenges. The book received the Writer of the Year Award at the Write To Publish conference in Illinois.

Doty has been divorced and widowed. As she puts it, she fell in love at age 16 and also at age 70. Her five adult children, 13 grandchildren, and their kids, all keep her plate full. Yet writing is always on her menu. Her books are a family saga of multiple generations, just like hers.

Four of her grandchildren have inspired children’s books she’s written about them, and she plans to continue until she’s written a book for all 13 of them.

There’s a story about a cat that she anticipates writing soon.

“I really pride myself on having my details correct,” she said. “I’ve had people say, ‘It’s fiction, why do you care?’”

Developing her character who was a California surfer involved interviewing a surfer to help with the type of surfboard he

used and where he’d surf. If a character in her book is traveling, she’ll make sure to figure out how much time it takes to get from one place to another.

She has a ceramic ornament that represents her life philosophy. It has broken pieces of glass that are formed into art.

“God takes those sharp, broken pieces and makes something new.”

Arts United announces nonprofit fund distribution, launch of grant program Arts United announced the final distribution of the Arts & Culture Nonprofit Resilience Fund with $250,000 of recovery grants distributed to 15 nonprofit arts and culture organizations.

The final round of funding was made possible by a grant from the English-Bonter-Mitchell Foundation at PNC Bank to support the recovery of nonprofits that restarted or amplified live programming July-December 2021 but have yet to fully recover earned revenue due to smaller audiences and/or lower than typical participation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Arts United’s board initiated the Resilience Fund in June 2020 to invest in the future of our com-

munity by supporting anchor arts and culture nonprofits as they reopened and re-imagined their programs in a world informed by the realities of COVID-19.

With support from the Edward D. & Ione Auer Foundation, The James Foundation, McMillen Foundation, Chuck and Lisa Surack and Sweetwater, Arts United Board of Directors, Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne and others, a total of $3,076,292 has been distributed to 18 anchor arts and culture organizations serving greater Fort Wayne.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with local foundations and families to help these outstanding arts and culture nonprofits stay financially resilient and continue to serve the Fort Wayne community through the pandemic,” said Bart Shaw, Arts United board member and chair of the Resilience Fund review committee.

“Now we are excited to move forward with a new grant program that will help arts and culture nonprofits rebuild and grow their impact in the community.”

Arts United also announced the launch of the new Regional Arts Council Capacity Grant Program.

The Capacity Grant Program is

intended to provide funding to members of the Regional Arts Council for one or more of the following purposes: • Improving artistic or educational quality.

• Developing, growing and/or reaching new audiences.

• Building or expanding a fundraising program or donor base.

• Engaging, training or retaining staff and/or volunteers.

• Taking action steps toward IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity or access).

Grants are available to members of the Regional Arts Council, a networking forum for area artists and nonprofit administrators facilitated by Arts United. The Regional Arts Council, comprising more than 50 member organizations throughout the 12-county region of Northeast Indiana, provides business services, grant programs, professional networking and development opportunities, and visibility and promotion activities to assist nonprofits in achieving their goals, and to help further public awareness of the arts in Northeast Indiana.

inside your brain, to reside there forever. It’s a song you never forget. But sometimes, when you get to thinking later about its rather puzzling lyrics, you end up scratching your head and asking, “What is this really all about?”

We’re talking here about “A Horse with No Name” by UK-based America, a trio of U.S.-born folk singers — Dewey Bunnell, Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek — who each had fathers who frequently relocated to military bases around the world.

“The song was born out of pure boredom,” admitted leader Bunnell, a Neil Young soundalike who was just 19 when he created the million-seller. “I had just graduated high school in London, and my family moved up to Yorkshire ... I wanted to stay in London, so I moved into the home of a friend and his family … I wrote the song alone in this guy’s bedroom that I

I wanted to capture the heat and the dryness.” First called “Desert Song,” Bunnell built his odd tale on a foundation of three guitar chords.

In 1971 the trio released their self-titled debut album in the UK but, since no issued single had caught record buyers’ atten-

tion yet, sales proved lackluster.

However, when “Horse” became a successful British 45 that November, the America LP was reissued to great success, thanks to the Bunnell-composed hit track.

When Bunnell’s creation was released in the States, it too become an overnight winner; the Warner Records 45 reached Number One here for three weeks, and the America album dominated the LP charts for over a month.

The song’s imagery had emerged from Bunnell’s childhood at an Air Force base on the damp central California coast.

He recalls, “We’d drive through Arizona and New Mexico. I loved the cactus and the heat. (In the song) I was trying to capture the sights and sounds of the desert.”

His free-flowing lyrics were painted with a broad brush and ranged from the elementary school simplicity of:

“There were plants and birds and rocks and things” and “The heat was hot and the ground was dry” to the Dylanesque denseness of: “The ocean is a desert with its life underground “And a perfect disguise above” Bunnell saw the desert as an existential epiphany but later admitted, “The song was a travelogue with an environmental message in there about saving the planet.”

As to the enigmatic image of the horse? “I see now that this anonymous horse was a vehicle to get me away from all the confusion and chaos of life to a peaceful, quiet place.”

Come to think of it, though, after all that time spent in peaceful desert solitude, wouldn’t the narrator have eventually come up with a name for his steed?

Sixties Flashback —

Hippie communes, the temporary utopias During the ‘60s, thousands of young Americans opted for a life in one of about 3,000 “hippie comBy RANDAL munes” C. HILL across the country. Who were those mavericks who made such an unorthodox choice? Generally, they were disaffected urban and suburban baby boomers who rejected traditional society. Their numbers included back-to-nature farmers, antiwar protestors, civil rights zealots, young men avoiding the draft, unfettered hedonists, criminals on the lam and fringe folks with nowhere else to go.

There was no “one size fits all” in such cooperatives, as each group developed its own culture. Some were religious based, others entirely secular.

Drugs flourished in certain quarters but were forbidden in others. Some were selfsufficient and agrarian based, while others ran capitalismfueled businesses.

Many residents did adopt a popular uniform of the day — long hair, long beards, long dresses, psychedelicpatterned clothes, sandals, beads, rimless “granny” glasses. (As a sort of social counterpoint, certain villages declared themselves clothing optional.) Traditional JudeoChristian tenets were sometimes replaced by elements of Buddhism and Hinduism.

The widespread popularity of astrology generated the term “Age of Aquarius.” Music heroes such as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead were

enthusiastically proclaimed “cool.”

It is important to give credit where credit is due regarding some of the principles adopted from these coteries.

Resident bohemians often followed healthy vegetarian diets and practiced holistic medicine. Gays and lesbians, frequently rejected by society at large, were usually welcomed by commune members.

On college and university campuses, ethnic studies of Blacks, Native Americans and Latinos blossomed, as did “teach-ins” about the Vietnam War. Counter-culturists concerned about the environment helped to establish the first Earth Day in 1970.

It was a variety of problems that lead to the ruination of many collectives. One of the main issues often the lack of any structured governing body. Rules were often lax when it came to raising food, sharing parental responsibilities and doing household tasks (Whose turn is it to clean the bathroom?). For some hipsters, often tedious toil became secondary to pursuing freewheeling matters of the flesh and a cornucopia of illicit drugs.

Poor money management was frequently a thorny issue also. (Farming, for example, involved hard work and wasn’t especially lucrative). Jealousy often drove irreparable wedges between certain “free love” groups.

Some residents simply grew older and chose to leave to embrace a world once scorned — working for The Man, driving a station wagon, buying a tract home.

Others just packed up and moved on to somewhere and something else.

I saw somewhere that if you store your strawberries in a Mason jar in the refrigerator they will last up to three weeks, so of course I tried it, but using a spaghetti sauce glass jar with metal cap. I’ve not hit three weeks yet, but I am at two weeks and they are looking good.

This is wonderful news in my house because while we have berries every day, we often have too many in the fridge and they

get a little less than optimal. I have now put blueberries in a smaller jar to see if it will work for them as well. This is a game changer.

Another experiment I am about to start is growing microgreens. Microgreens are edible young greens produced from various kinds of vegetables. They range in size from 1 to 3 inches including the stem and leaves and have a high level of naturally occurring nutrients, minerals and antioxidants. I have been buying them at our local farmers market and putting them on salads and sandwiches and have discovered the amazing freshness they add. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Hopefully spring has sprung by the time you are reading this, and you have returned to walking outdoors or moving in some other manner. Getting outdoors fills the lungs with freshness,

clears the mind of clutter and gets those lazy winter muscles back into action. Walk, stretch, whatever you can do — do it.

Today is the day — do it. One pound of cooked veggies and one pound of raw. Don’t forget the G-BOMBS from Dr. Fuhrman — greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries and seeds. Mushrooms should always be cooked, and try to get some raw onions in each day.

Raw onions are hard for me, but pickled red onions I have found very doable. I do a modified version of this recipe by omitting the sugar and salt, so mine technically aren’t pickled.

Hall of Fame ump excited for 2022 season

By ROD KING Feature Writer James Craig is just 56 years old, but he’s been umpiring baseball games for nearly 40 years. That’s because his first ump job was a T-ball game in his hometown of St. Louis, Mo., at 14 years of age.

He was playing American Legion baseball at the time.

His coach encouraged him and his teammates to give back by helping out the local baseball organization. They were given their choice of three options. The first was to help on the grounds crew. Or they could keep game scores. The third option was umpiring. He took umpiring because the grounds crew meant a lot of heavy work and score keeping was boring. Besides, only umpiring paid.

Before the family moved to Bowling Green, Ky., 10-year-old Cub Scout Craig had the honor of being a speaker representing the youth of the community at the retirement of the great Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson in Busch Stadium in front of a packed house.

In Kentucky he continued to umpire games when he got the

opportunity and at 18 earned his umpire’s license. He tried high school baseball for a couple years, but admitted he “just wasn’t very good.” A year later the family moved to Fort Wayne and one of the first things he did was take the umpire’s test and get his Indiana license. While earning a degree in secondary education at Indiana University Purdue University at Fort Wayne his summer job was umpiring Little League and Pony League games.

With the 2022 baseball season just barely started, Craig is booked solid. He’ll be doing 36 high school games between now and May 15, followed by the IHSAA state tournament (he’s done 10 since 1999) and then the High School All-Star game for the fourth time. He was elected to the Northeast Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame three years ago. Craig umpires all positions, but prefers home plate.

“The person behind the plate controls the tempo of the game and I like to keep things moving,” Craig said. “If you go to a baseball game and don’t even realize there’s an umpire present, that person is doing a good job.

“I feel the biggest thing

influencing the amount of abuse umpires have to endure is the introduction of traveling teams 15 or so years ago,” he added.

“Parents and coaches have a big investment in the kids and are extremely passionate about their teams. Unfortunately they don’t know the rules as well as they think they do. Because of that, getting people to become officials is getting harder and harder.

“It’s different with high school and college, because the teams are an extension of the classroom and the players are expected to behave.”

Umpiring doesn’t stop at the close of the baseball season. He also referees football and has contracts for high school games through 2027. He was the first African American to head a refereeing crew in the state football championships.

Both sports require testing each year and attending clinics to keep up on rule changes. He draws the line, however, when it comes to basketball. “I take that season off to rest and rejuvenate,” he said. “Besides, I’m a big St. Louis Blues hockey fan and of course I’m a St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.”

Elder law attorneys have many legal tools, including Non-Probate Transfers.

A Non-Probate Transfer is the transfer of an asset after a person’s death without going through the probate process. Examples of these are Transfer on Death Deeds and Pay on Death Accounts. An individual can name beneficiaries who receive their house or bank account by operation of law, automatically at the individual’s death.

However, Non-Probate Transfers can create problems. For instance, a house transferred to numerous children by a Transfer on Death deed makes the children co-owners. This can be a recipe for conflict. Also, Non-Probate Transfers do not avoid creditor claims. A creditor can themselves open a probate estate and demand repayment of a Pay on Death bank account to satisfy the person’s debts.

Finally, it is not uncommon for one child to be named as a Pay on Death beneficiary of bank accounts with the expectation they will share those

It is very tempting to seek an easy, understandable, and more cost effective way to transfer assets to loved ones while avoiding probate. A column about Column A and Column B I do a lot of dumb things. But I have no regrets, because these missteps often end up as an inspiration for IN A one of my NUTSHELL columns.

By DICK I do not WOLFSIE do dumb things on purpose. That would be, well … dumb.

One of the dumbest things I ever did was about four years ago when Mary Ellen and I were planning a trip to Washington, DC, to visit some of my old classmates from George Washington University. My wife usually makes the reservations, but I took on the responsibility. BIG mistake.

I checked online and compared different rates. I found a surprisingly inexpensive hotel right in Washington and booked it. I couldn’t determine from their map how far the hotel was from the White House, which was the part of town we needed to be in … so I called.

“Hello. This is Richard Wolfsie and a few days ago I booked a room with you guys for September 4 through September 10. Can you give me some idea how far you are from the White House and how long it would take to walk that distance?”

There was a pause on the other end.

“Well, Sir, it’s about 3,000 miles as the crow flies. If you are walking with the crows, you’re looking at about three months.”

What I had done was — yes, book a hotel in Washington.

Just not DC. It was in the middle of Seattle.

Over the years, Mary Ellen has never let me forget this dumb mistake, but now she has topped me. This is especially gratifying because she never does dumb things, with maybe one exception 42 years ago.

Here’s the story: The other night we decided to pick up Chinese food. Our favorite place had gone out of business, so we were seeking a new option. Someone recommended Happy Dragon.

Mary Ellen made the call and placed the order. The first odd

thing was our ticket number: 8649735260, which I think is also the population of China.

After we ordered, I asked Mary Ellen for the address.

Brett, my son, put it in his GPS to see how long it would take to get there.

“Do we need to leave now?”

I asked.

“I think we better, Dad. It’s gonna take us about three and a half hours.”

“Wow, that much traffic?”

With that, Mary Ellen let out a yelp. I had never heard my wife yelp. Not in 42 years.

“Oh, no! I ordered our food from a Happy Dragon in Ohio by mistake.” (We live in Indiana) “I hope it was Canton, Ohio.

I love Cantonese food.”

“Very funny. No, it was Happy Dragon in Columbus, Ohio.

Call them back and cancel.”

I called and told him my name, and then I read him our order number.

“OK, you are Mr. fried rice, two eggrolls, wonton soup and main course is …”

“Yes, yes, that’s me. Look we live in Indianapolis and …”

“Oh, that’s a long drive; better leave now. Getting cold.”

“I’m sorry, we made a mis-

take and will have to cancel.

We didn’t mean to order from Ohio.”

“You don’t like Cantonese food?”

“Too late, I already did

that joke.”

We reordered at the local Happy Dragon and enjoyed the dinner. That night we were a happy family, which was also our main course.

Picture your home inventory

Don’t forget your liquor cabinet and all that’s hanging and stuffed into your closets. If you have some special pieces, you can set them in the middle of the living room floor and shoot them separately.

Whether you’ve shot video or still photos, copy the contents to your computer and onto two or three thumb drives. Store those drives off premises, such as in a safety deposit box and with a member of your family.

Have faith, will travel near or far

Whether near or far, when it comes to practicing their faith, Dave and Erna Springer don’t count the miles.

Erna was born in Bluffton and graduated from Bluffton High School. Dave was born in Ossian and attended Ossian High School. They met at a Maloley’s grocery store in Bluffton where she worked as a cashier and he as a stock boy. The couple was married in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bluffton, Erna’s home parish, on July 12, 1969, and will celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary this year. They have three children - Todd, Kimberly and Deanna - 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, with a third due this month.

Since childhood, Dave has been a member of St. Mark Lutheran Evangelical Church, Fort Wayne. The Springers reside northwest of Ossian.

“Even though we each belong to different faith traditions, we serve each other ecumenically, often agreeing to disagree,”

said Erna. “We’ve become one in Christ, supporting each other’s long-standing faith tradition but also volunteering at one another’s church.”

Shortly after they wed, the couple moved to the Waynedale area of Fort Wayne where Erna began attending St. Therese Catholic Church. She taught religious education at St. Therese School and for many years volunteered at the annual fall festival. Currently she serves as a Eucharistic minister, assists the finance council and volunteers weekly at the food bank. She also serves on the Right to Life Council of Northeast Indiana with other parishioners.

In addition, Erna is in charge of some 10 volunteers who serve with her on the funeral dinner committee. Often Dave helps out at St. Therese, assisting at the fall festival, helping at the food bank and at funeral dinners. And Erna volunteers at St. Mark’s, serving on their funeral dinner committee and helping prepare and serve the “Sonrise” breakfast on Easter Sunday.

Recently, she helped the parish office create the weekly bulletin and streamline worship services. Dave serves on St. Mark’s Parish Council, heads up fundraising and serves as an usher. Both also assist the two parishes with spring and fall cleanup of the grounds.

Last year the couple volunteered to wash the huge windows at St. Mark’s.

“It turned out to be an almost overwhelming project,” said Erna. “Involving both the inside and outside windows as well as the screens. We may hold off on volunteering for that project for a while.”

Currently, Erna travels the 10 miles from their home near Ossian to St. Therese several times a week including Sunday Mass, a Monday class on the New Testament, Eucharistic adoration on Tuesday evening and the food bank on Thursday morning. And, if there’s a funeral dinner, that adds another trip.

“One of the seven Corporal Works of Mercy is to bury the dead,” Erna remarked. “When Dave and I serve the funeral dinner committees at both parishes, we feel we’re doing our part to comfort a grieving family.”

Speaking of traveling, since Dave retired from a number of professions, including mechanical contractor and semi driver, the couple recently completed a monthlong trip of more than 5,000 miles through 13 states.

Pandemic packing

There’s more to be concerned about than the COVID-19 coronavirus. Diseases that have been conquered here still run

free in many other parts of the world. Travelers can protect themselves by taking some extra care when packing medications for their trip.

Malaria still is a threat because it’s transmitted by mosquitoes. Travelers should pack mosquito repellent and avoid areas where the insects thrive. Mosquitoes also spread yellow fever and some countries require proof of vaccination before allowing travelers entry.

There is no known protection against West Nile virus, dengue fever and a few other similar possibly fatal disorders spread by mosquitoes, so the only protection is to avoid areas where these creatures breed.

Hepatitis A & B still are perils you can be shielded from by three immunizations. A vaccination can protect you from

meningitis and a booster shot can ward off polio if you’ve been immunized earlier.

Before leaving on any trip, have a chat with your primary care physician to protect yourself on your travels.

Those most likely to have a stroke are the elderly, and risk factors include hypertension, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, sickle cell disease and a family history of stroke.

Indications that you’re having a stroke include stumbling as you try to walk, weakness on one side, trouble seeing and difficulty speaking. Most people do not recognize they’re having a stroke, so it’s up to someone nearby to recognize the signs and call 911 immediately.

What you will notice is the stroke victim is confused and has trouble talking to you and understanding what you are saying to them. They might suddenly have trouble seeing you out of one or both eyes.

You could notice a sudden drooping, especially of one side of their face and body.

They might complain of a sudden headache and dizziness while losing some of their physical coordination.

If you notice anyone with just one of these signs, call 911. Immediately.

Strokes strike anyone anytime Recognizing a stroke in its early stages can save the life of the victim, which could be yourself or someone nearby.

There are several telltale signs that blood flow to your brain has been cut off, which causes brain cells to die and affects your awareness and activity.

It’s the third leading cause of death.

Imagine being a member of a crew, armed only with harpoons and ropes, rowing a wooden boat after one of these monsters. The excitement of hearing the lookout shout “there she blows” must have been overwhelming and the fear of having the boat crushed by a whale and being knocked into icy, shark infested seas must have been terrifying. Sometimes a harpooned whale would drag a boat on a perilous “Nantucket sleigh ride” that could cover miles, last hours and leave the exhausted crew far from their mother ship.

When a man signed on a whaling crew it was not just for a few days, a week or two or even a month. They didn’t come home until their holds

were full of whale oil and that could take anywhere from a year to four years. Hunting and butchering whales, harvesting teeth and baleen (keratin), and rendering blubber into oil was grueling, dirty work. It was also very dangerous and the long days and weeks of hunting were extremely boring.

To learn about the industry that thrived on the east coast of the United States from the 1700s into the 1930s, the place to be is at the New Bedford, Massachusetts Whaling Museum, the largest whaling museum in the world.

Here’s where visitors can get their hands on the tools of whaling and marvel at how enormous these mammals really are. Visitors can climb aboard the world’s largest ship model, the one-half-scale Lagoda whaling vessel that sailed the seven seas in the late 1800s. Priceless whaling art depicting legendary journeys fill the walls.

It’s 60 feet long and its head, which comprises approximately a third of its total length, is 21 feet long, 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide. One really gets how large it is when standing

In other words, the world’s largest creature feeds on the world’s smallest.

A dramatic film chronicling the whaling industry points out that whalers, like most early sailors, suffered from many dietary deficiencies.

Even though there was an abundance of whale meat to eat, it was thought that it was not good for human consumption. Instead, they ate only the salt pork brought with them and suffered from scurvy because of a lack of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The Quakers are credited with developing an integrated whaling system in the small village of New Bedford. They

built refineries, candle factories and expanded import/ export operations. More whaling ships sailed from this port than from all of the world’s ports combined. In fact, it was one of the most important whaling ports in the world in the 19th century. And between 1825 and 1925 it was known as “The Whaling City.” Its motto back in the day was “The City That Lit the World.”

New book combines adventure with Bible lessons Gerald W. Donaldson’s new book, “Journey to Eternity,” follows Otto and Friedrich, two young men who were raised in Christian homes, yet are on completely different paths in life.

Orleans, following Hurricane Katrina.

He survived a near fatal fall at age 19, leaving him critically injured with a multiple skull fracture and blood clot on the brain, as well as temporary paralysis and coma. He also survived a near fatal car accident two years later, and is a two-time heart attack survivor — once in

2003 and, most recently, in 2016, a very severe one in which he could have died.

Online auction advantages when planning to downsize

By KURT J. NESS Ness Bros. Senior Relocation Program Recently I had a conversation with a buyer who was looking at a home with personal property we were having an online auction on.

The buyer’s question to me was, “Why is the seller selling everything online versus having a live auction or a tag sale?” My response was first to thank him for the question and then I went on to explain the reasons why.

For the seller the advantages were: • Not having to worry about the weather.

• The seller’s family members did not have to travel to the auction to see how things were selling; they could watch it online.

• Not having to worry about parking or crowd size.

• Not having to worry about security.

• Lower costs for the seller.

• Potentially more buyers, which means higher prices.

For the buyer the advantages are: • Not having to take three to four hours out of their schedule to attend the auction.

April Fools, Easter and Baer Field

By PASTOR GREG LAWSON M.Min., MSW Guest Writer Pulling jokes on fellow GIs or civilians was not on the immediate agenda of those at Baer Field or Fort Wayne back in April 1944.

From the Baer Field Beacon newsletter (Saturday, April 1), we can now learn about many activities of the GIs now 78 years later. The USO Club carried out a “birthday party for all GIs born in April,” the party being planned for “Wednesday night, April 5.”

According to the Beacon reporter, “the lucky one whose birthdate fell closest to the 5th” would receive “a long distant phone call” to anywhere they chose.

Many more events were held in April 1944, including “a GI sweetheart contest at the SMC (Servicemen’s Club).” It was reported that the bulletin board was covered with many photos of very attractive girls. In addition to the sweetheart contest, a special prize was going to the “GI mother voted best looking.”

Easter fell in April this year, and an Easter dance was held “on April 8 and 9 with an egg hunt scheduled for Sunday, April 9. Hopefully the eggs were various colors and not khaki or camouflage.

Not to be outdone by the USO, Baer Field WACS held a “squadron party” at Fort Wayne’s VFW post at the end of March just prior to the USO’s April events.

At the VFW, “The assorted GIs ate, danced and spent a wonderful evening, which included the giving of six door prizes.” Two other events were held in Fort Wayne and at Baer Field in early April.

First, the NCO club held “an open house party for all base NCOs and their guests Sunday, April 2.” All of the “wives, sweethearts and friends of the non-coms (were) invited to visit

Perhaps the most interesting event was held at the Fort Wayne Armory on Saturday, April 8,

by Baer Field’s Headquarters Squadron at its annual party.

It was reported that “The funseeking… GIs will partake of a huge buffet supper and be entertained by an all-girl floor show and comedy act and a nine-piece band.”

Evidently the war did not put a damper on the Easter celebra-

tions of April 1944, nor did it deter the appointed rounds of the Easter Bunny who may have stopped to see the “all-girl floor show” at the Fort Wayne Armory.
