Gardening “reduces stress,” noted Carolyn Baldwin. It’s one of the benefits of the city’s new community garden, said Baldwin, a volunteer for it. People began planting items in the 330-square-foot garden in May. It’s located along Pontiac Street near the city’s sledding hill. Roe, who serves as the manager for the project, said she came up with the idea in 2024 after hearing of a community garden in New Mexico while on a trip. She said she spoke with Rochester Mayor Trent Odell, who was on board with the concept.

He told her the city had a halfacre lot by the sledding hill. “(The city) had tried to have people put houses in here, but (the ground) was too low,” said Roe. “I mean if it really, really rains, this whole thing will be in water, so nobody wanted it. He tried to give it to (Fulton County) Habitat for Humanity, but they didn’t want it.” Roe then moved the garden project under Fulton County Healing Through Opportunity, Positivity and Empowerment’s umbrella, so she could receive funding, with the half-acre lot being leased from the city. She said the garden “fits (H.O.P.E.’s) mission of providing food for people.” Funding for the project came
via various means. Roe said bread was sold through the local organization Loaves of Love to raise money for the garden, with her also receiving donations for it. One of them came from Rochester Metal Products. She said various people helped with putting together the garden as well. Roy Danforth, who’s assisted with community gardens in Marshall County, helped plan the garden’s layout. Kim Landis transported cardboard to the garden, with volunteers laying it and mulch down. Roe noted the cardboard prevents the need for mowing between the garden’s beds. Continued on page 3
