Akron families with food insecurities now have another option to supplement their needs thanks to two forward-thinking women and one local business.

Earlier this year, while browsing the Shopping Guide News’s online sister publication InkFreeNews.com, friends Jackie Whetstone and Lisa Hill happened upon a story from the town of Leesburg, a small community in Kosciusko County, that was the first in that county to install a Forward Indiana self-service pantry.

The pantries run on the motto, “Take what you need, leave what you can.” This concept of mutual aid is central to Forward Indiana’s mission as it differs from “charity” by accenting the idea “I’m in the same boat as you … it’s more user-friendly,” Additionally, the COVID-friendly distribution eliminates middlemen and closequarters indoors. The method also encourages some who may desire anonymity.

Statistics show one in four children in Indiana has experienced hunger. And, with the COVID-19 pandemic hurting employment, many people experienced food instability for the first time in their lives.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who fall through the cracks.

There can be gaps in employment or government assistance during which anyone may access these self-help pantries, which have no requirements. Forward Indiana believes everybody should have access to food and kindness.

After reading the story and discussing it among their friends, Whetstone and Hill decided this was something they wanted to pursue in Fulton County, specifically in Akron, where Hill resides. Hill contacted Forward Indiana who gave her the basic information on purchasing a pantry cabinet and the steps she would need to get it approved in her community.

They then approached the Akron Town Council with their idea and proposal to bring a self-service pantry to the community. They were told as long as they could find a business willing to host the pantry, they would consider the request.

Hill said she immediately went to Viking Foods and its owner, Vicky Singh, to see if he would be interested in placing the pantry outside the building. Singh readily agreed, which Continued on page 3

Rochester senior to continue football career at Trine %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 )HDWXUH :ULWHU “I’ve been playing football my whole life,” stated Rochester High School senior Noah Swango.

Swango started playing organized football in third grade and has played every school year since.

And now, he gets to continue his football journey at Trine University in Angola.

Swango recently signed his letter of intent to continue his football career with the Thunder. The four-year academic scholarship will allow him to pursue his interest in biology with the ultimate goal of becoming a sports medicine physician.

Whether it’s high school, college or pro teams, helping athletes recover from their injuries is Swango’s way of giving back to the sports community.

“I grew up always wanting to play football from a very young age, and my parents have always pushed me to do my best in everything I do,” he said.

His hard work, drive and support from his parents and coaches throughout his young

life have paid off.

A coach from Trine reached out to Swango last year. After visiting the campus and investigating a few other collegiate options, it didn’t take him long to realize Trine is where he wanted to be.

“I really liked the coaching staff and what they’re about,” Swango said of selecting Trine. He also liked the size of the campus and the school’s biology program.

Trine’s 2020 football roster consisted of 138 players. Swango is hopeful to get some field time in during games this fall, and will begin practicing with the team in late July.

He said of the things he enjoys most about football, “Is the ability to be part of a team and the friendships I’ve built throughout the years. And winning. But, winning is not everything. It’s also the hard work of doing something for the betterment of the team and not just yourself.”

Swango has played varsity the last three years and was a team captain the last two. During his senior year he played eight games, which included 88 assists, 15 solo tackles and 103 total tackles with

an average of 12.9 tackles per game.

The offensive lineman and linebacker’s football accolades for the 2020-21 season include leading the team in tackles, MVP, academic all-conference and all-conference on defense.

The four-year varsity letterman is also an avid wrestler. He has been wrestling since grade seven and has continued through high school.

“I wouldn’t be where I’m at without the help of my coaches.

They have helped me get where I am today,” he said.

He added, “Coach Gard has had a big impact on me and has helped to get me where I am as an athlete and as a person. All the wrestling coaches — Coach Holloway, Coach Beck, Coach Roberts, Coach Wilson, and all the coaching staff as well as the football coaches and coaching staff, Kelly, Hughes, Sechrist, Shafer and Basham have definitely made a big impact on me.”

months before we open the 2021 Indiana State Fair, and we are confident that with our 250+ acre, mostly outdoor campus we will be able to host our fair late this summer,” Indiana State Fair Commission Executive Director Cindy Hoye said. “We are thankful to the State Department of Health for their collaboration and continued guidance on getting us back to hosting this important community event.”

This year the state fair will add a weekend to the front end of the fair schedule and will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays weekly.

According to Hoye, “We know this year’s state fair may look a little different, and we are prepared for that. By adding an additional weekend, it allows us to spread fair attendance across a new weekend. This event matters to our state and our fairgoers; it’s an important part of annual Hoosier family traditions.”

After conducting some fundraising and then purchasing the pantry, Hill and Whetstone contacted local artist Brenda Ramseier, who agreed to paint the cabinet. It was installed on the east side of Viking Foods and stocked with foods donated by friends who were aware of the project and with money leftover from their initial fundraising efforts.

The pantry is completely autonomous in that anyone can take what they need from it without question.

Conversely, people can leave what they are able, which is especially convenient given its location outside of a grocery store. In addition to food items, people can leave school supplies, diapers and toiletries that might be useful to someone in need.

“There are a lot of people who need help but who don’t want to go to a regular pantry,” said Whetstone.

“We’re excited and hope it takes off as more people know about it. We’ve put a lot of work into it.”

For his part, Singh said allowing the pantry to be put outside his store “was the right thing to do.”

“It can help everybody all around here,” he said. “There are people who need food. They can buy it here and drop it off on their way out. That way, whoever needs it can come and get it.”

‘Road to Recovery Walk’ to be held Fulton County Community Foundation, Intrepid Phoenix, Ace Fitness, Recovery Café, The Cross Church, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Delong Gospel Lighthouse, Celebrate Recovery and the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department have come together to host a walk in hopes of creating public awareness to recovery services in Fulton County.

Fitness, 2088 Main St., Rochester, and will end at the Rochester City Park, where there will be free lunch and other free family activities. Walk registration starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 5, with the walk beginning at 10 a.m. The festivities at Rochester City Park start at 10:30 a.m.

Registration fee for the event is $5 dollars, with a shirt provided. To receive a shirt, reg-

istrations must be received by Wednesday, May 19. However, walk registration will be collected up until the day of the walk.

Teressa A. Moore Lifetime Area Resident

Teressa A. “Terry” Moore, daughter of the late Russell and Lois Gaumer Wilson, passed away at 8:37 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at her home.

Terry was the wife of Joe; mom of Rusty, Cris, Mindy and John; loving grandma of Stephanie, Allison, Evan, Katelyn, Guiliana, Marcy, Jake, Scott and Melissa.

On April 24, 1938, Terry was born and lived her entire life in Rochester, graduating with the RHS class of 1956. Throughout her entire life she was helping others, whether working in insurance, banking, at Manitou Training Center, director of the Fulton County Council on Aging, United Ministries, plus being a longtime Tri Kappa member. In addition to the above, she enjoyed playing the organ or the piano for church services, singalongs for pure enjoyment or an occasional wedding or funeral.

Terry surely was a special person to those who worked with her or came to her with their problems or concerns. She was a good listener, kind, sincere, caring, compassionate and accepted all people regardless of their status, handicap or color. Terry and Joe received the 2016 Community Service Award.

A private service celebrating Terry’s life will be held at Good Family Funeral Home of Rochester. Chaplain Jason See will officiate. The committal will follow at Rochester IOOF Cemetery.

Betty L. Barnes Retired Production Clerk

Betty L. Barnes, 83, Rochester, was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away at 11:45 a.m. Friday, May 14, 2021, at her residence.

On April 1, 1938, Betty Lou Mehrley was born in Rochester to Gerald E. and Mildred A. Cunningham Mehrley. As the oldest of five, she shared her childhood with three sisters and a brother. %(77< / Betty and Jerry Lee Barnes were married Sept. %$51(6 1, 1979, in the Talma Church. They enjoyed 41 years of life’s adventures. Their family tree included the additions of three generations.

After 30 dedicated years of working as a production clerk, Betty retired from RR Donnelley in 1996.

Gifted with her hands, Betty enjoyed crocheting gifts of warmth for her family and friends, especially afghans and hats. Reading romantic novels was a source of relaxation. Jerry and Betty were avid campers, usually heading to one of Indiana’s State Parks like Covered Bridge, Mounds or Tippecanoe. They also enjoyed camping trips to Daniel Boone Park in Charleston, W.Va. Left to cherish Betty’s memory are her husband Jerry; two daughters, Debra Croussore and husband Robert of Rochester and Peggy Bailey and husband Tim of Tippecanoe; four sons, David Barnes and wife Teressa of Columbia City, Rodney Barnes and wife Ethel of Warsaw, Craig Barnes and wife Ginger of Warsaw and Tony Barnes and wife Deb of Mentone; seven grandchildren, Levi Jones and wife Shannon, Gina Tucker and husband Nathan, Braxton Barnes, Kristen Connor and husband Ryan, Kelsey Nelson and husband Wyatt, Kyle Bause and wife Tawny and Chris Slone; seven great-grandchildren, Hailee, Amanda, Anthony, Jaxon, Alexa, Harper, Huxlee and Trinity; two sisters, Judy Spencer of Rochester and Karen Bock and husband David of Rochester; brother, Ernest “Jr” Mehrley and wife Pat of Jackson, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Betty in death are her parents and sister, Imogene Davis.

A celebration of the life of Mrs. Betty Lou Barnes will be at noon Wednesday, May 19, at the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Pastor Rodney Utter will officiate. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.

M. Garwin Eaton, 83, rural Mentone, died at 7:05 a.m. Sunday, May 9, 2021, at Paddock Springs of Warsaw, where he had been for three weeks.

He was born 0 *$5:,1 July 4, 1937. ($721 On Nov. 22, 1956, he married Peggy Lou Tinkey; she survives.

He is survived by his wife, Peg Eaton, Mentone; children, Kevin (Terri) Eaton, Claypool, Greg (Flo) Eaton, Morrisville, N.C., Kelly (Jeff) Howard, Rochester, and Stacy (Kenny) Johnson, Claypool; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall E. and Helene (Bashore) Eaton; a great-grandson; a sister, Patricia Ann Syler; and a niece.

The funeral service took place Thursday, May 13, at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone.

The interment took place in the Palestine Cemetery.

Sunday May 9, 2021, at her residence.

Surviving are her children, Judith (Larry) Underwood, Hebron, John (Judith) Stock, Westfield, Charles Stock, Corvallis, Ore., Hank Stock, Lafayette, and David (Pam) Stock, Portage; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Stock; daughter, Joy Michelle Stock; three brothers; and one sister.

Private graveside services and burial took place at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. Visitation was held Thursday, May 13, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester.

He is survived by his daughters, Laura (Kenneth) Hawkins, Warsaw, Rita Jo Utter, Fort Wayne, Shelly King, Burket, Kathy Blauser, Warsaw, Brenda Utter, Etna Green, and Tina (Jeff) Becker, Culver; a son, Rod (Donna) Utter, Akron; stepdaughter, Margaret (Mike) Walton, Mentone; foster daughter, Janet Elliott, Kentucky; nine grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; and sisters, Sue Curtis, Warsaw, and Luanne (Jim) May, Columbia City.

He was also preceded in death by parents, Wilbert R. and LaVera M. (Walters) Utter; a grandson; brothers, Ron and Jim Utter; and a stepson, Darwin Powell.

The family held a memorial service Sunday, May 16, at the Cornerstone Church, 101 N. Franklin St., Men-

tone.

Organization helps fly dog from Rochester to Connecticut %\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Janet Showley, executive director of the Fulton County Animal Center, noted they recently had a visit from Pilots N Paws, a non-profit charitable organization which, through the help of general aviation volunteer pilots, transports rescue animals by air.

According to the Pilots N Paws website, its mission is to provide a user-friendly communication venue between those who rescue, shelter and foster animals and pilots and plane owners willing to assist with the transportation of these animals.

Founded in February 2008, Pilots N Paws continues to make a difference in the lives of innocent animals.

They have flown thousands of rescue animals, military working dogs, service dogs and dogs soldiers have adopted from war zones to safe havens provided by rescues and families.

Last week, pilot Bill Johnson of New Wilmington, Pa., and Ethan

Conwi an engineering student at University of Dayton and a student pilot, came to Rochester to pick up a dog, Maddy. Showley said Maddy was an owner surrender due a history of biting.

“We were not comfortable placing her without behavior modification,” said Showley. “We reached out to a breed-specific rescue (she is an American Eskimo) and they agreed to take her and work with her, eventually to find an adopter with breed experience. The rescue was ‘Eskies Online’ based in Canterbury, Conn.”

Showley went on to say there were a total of three pilots involved in Maddy’s transport from Indiana to Connecticut.

“It was a true collaboration of many people working together to save a life,” she said.

Let’s study the Bible Victory over disappointment Read: Psalm 42:1-11 “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help %\ 5(9 521 of his counte385.(< nance. O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.” (Psalm 42:5-6) Sometimes, it feels like God has taken a long-distance trip and not informed us of when he’ll return.

The first thing to do in such circumstances is to draw from past experiences with God. The psalmist recalls times when he joined the festive procession to Jerusalem for one of the annual festivals, singing and shouting for joy (Psalm 42:4). The second thing the psalmist does is to counsel himself with the truth.

He asks himself why he is so dejected and filled with turmoil (Psalm 42:5). Then he urges himself, in spite of the darkness, to

put his hope in God. When we walk through dark times, we must follow the psalmist’s example. Keep track of those times when God has come through for you. Store such experiences in your memory bank. It’s important to have a history with God so during the bad times, you can remember the good times to help you persevere. In addition, when God seems absent and uninterested, remember what you know to be true about God. He is faithful and worth hoping in. To hope is to expectantly wait for God to act. Just because you can’t see God working doesn’t mean he’s inactive. Sometimes, like Abraham, you must hope against hope, trusting God will do what he has promised to do (see Romans 4:17-21).

The psalmist shifts back to distress: “I am deeply depressed (Psalm 42:6).” His life is like a seesaw; he’s up and then down.

He fluctuates between songs and sobs, hope and despair, confidence and collapse, fear and faith. His trying circumstances are like the roar of waterfalls, like breakers and billows sweeping over him (Psalm 42:7).

Why have you forgotten me?

The truth is God hadn’t forgotten the psalmist, but sometimes it does feel this way.

The apostle Paul reminds Christians “all things work together for the good of those who love God” (Romans 8:28). Notice he doesn’t say all things are good,

but all things work together for good. Think of the way God puts the pieces of our situations together for a good end in terms of an automobile assembly plant where the various parts of the car

are scattered about.

Before the Lord is done taking us through his assembly line, what would seem to be only a confusing mass of pieces is brought together as a finished product.

Right now, the pieces of your life may seem unrelated and purposeless. But, God is up to something: he’s conforming you “to the image of his Son” (see Romans 8:29).

This summer, however, plans for this year’s version of the annual fair are in the works, according to Fair Board President Steve Williams. While things are still in the planning stages and certainly subject to change prior to the July 10-17 fair week, Williams and the rest of the board are preparing for a full week of events, exhibits, entertainment and, of course, food.

“We are going to go ahead and have as close to a normal fair as possible this year,” emphasized Williams. “We’ll start by having the 4-H kids bring in their animals on Saturday, July 10.”

Later that day, the fun will begin for the community with a variety of activities and action at the fairgrounds. Williams said there will be a myriad of food booths, including options provided by the Rochester Optimist Club, the Pork Producers Association and the Rochester Lions Club. Round Barn Creamery will also be on hand, as well as a variety of vendors providing fair food favorites like elephant ears, funnel cakes, lemonade and other summer festival staples.

Sunday will feature the annual vespers service. Planned activities through the week include the popular kiddie pedal pull, shows provided by Sweetcakes Entertainment Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, that will include caricature drawings, face painting, balloon animals and other entertainment. Also scheduled are the highly anticipated tractor pull Tuesday, Farmers Olympics Wednesday, mud bog show Thursday and antique tractor pull Fri-

day. Saturday’s entertainment finale is the always fun demolition derby.

Williams added there will be some midway rides available at the fair. While it won’t be a full midway, there will be rides available. Additionally, Silly Safari will be providing shows throughout the week to expose families to some of their exotic animal friends and provide an opportunity for the kids to have their pictures taken with them.

Monday through Thursday, Wheels of Agriculture will be providing interactive shows that involve audience members as they explore the history of agriculture.

The queen pageant once again will be held at Rochester High School Saturday, July 10. It also will include the Little Miss and Junior Miss pageants.

“The fair board, 4-Hers and everyone involved are excited to be able to have a full scale fair this year,” said Williams. “We hope that everyone will take the time to come out at least once during the week and enjoy the entertainment, social interaction and the great fair food.”

Once again, Smith Family Farm will sponsor parking during a couple fair days. Parking will be free with the donation of canned foods.

Williams also noted there are several events that still need corporate or individual sponsorships.

Click It or Ticket campaign reminds motorists to buckle up On average, more than 90 percent of motorists can be found wearing their seat belts any given day. Unfortunately, the small percentage of people who choose not to buckle up make up a disproportionate amount of the fatalities that occur every year on

Indiana roads.

It’s a concern more than 200 Indiana police agencies will be working to address this spring by participating in the national Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign. Now until June 6, officers will be out in greater num-

bers seeking to educate motorists about the importance of wearing a seat belt.

The high-visibility patrols are paid for with funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, administered by the Indiana Criminal

Kosciusko Endowment Youth Services awarded grant Kosciusko Endowment Youth Services , the youth philanthropy group at the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, was recently awarded a $12,500 grant from the Dekko Foundation. These funds will be put toward KEYS grant making efforts,

“If the pandemic has taught us anything it’s that life is precious,” said Devon McDonald, ICJI executive director. “We expect more people will be venturing out and taking road trips this spring, and wearing a seat belt is still the best way to keep you and your loved ones safe on the road.”

Between 2015 and 2019, seat belts have saved more than 69,000 lives in the U.S., according to NHTSA. Despite knowing the benefits, people still refuse to buckle up, a choice that too often can end in tragedy.

Last year, more than 800 people were killed on Indiana roads, of which, 565 occurred in passenger vehicles. Sadly, 364 of those, or six out of 10, were not wearing seat belts.

Out of any age group, male drivers, particularly those between the ages of 15 and 34, were the most likely to be found not wearing a seat belt at the time of a crash. Additionally, individuals not wearing seat belts were three times more likely to get injured in a crash when the driver was speeding and seven times more likely when the driver was impaired.

“There’s a common misconception that riding in the back seat or driving a large truck or SUV will keep you safe in a crash,

which couldn’t be further from the truth,” said Robert Duckworth, ICJI traffic safety division director. “Buckling up is the best way to increase your survivability, regardless of what seat or vehicle you’re in.”

According to ICJI, officers will be writing citations and conducting high-visibility patrols during the day but especially at night, when unrestrained driving is at its peak (midnight to 4 a.m.).

Under Indiana’s primary seat belt law, officers can stop and cite drivers and passengers just for failing to wear a seat belt.

Drivers can also be cited for each unbuckled passenger under the age of 16, and children under eight must be properly restrained in a federally approved child or booster seat.

Throughout the campaign, officers will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt enforcement, which means anyone caught not wearing one will receive a citation.

Indiana DNR seeks conservation officer applicants Indiana DNR Division of Law Enforcement is looking to fill Indiana Conservation Officer positions across the state.

Anyone interested should first read “Become a Conservation Officer” at on.IN.gov/dnrlaw and complete the pre-screening test under the “apply” link on that website. Successful completion of the pre-screening test is required to receive an application for the hiring process. To maximize the

time needed for DNR Law Enforcement to complete the process, the pre-screening test needs to be submitted by midnight, June 3.

To be qualified to pass the prescreening test, you must be a United States citizen and be 21 years old by Oct. 30. You also must be able to pass minimum Indiana Law Enforcement Academy physical fitness requirements as listed at www.in.gov/ilea/2338.htm.

Conservation officers comprise

Indiana’s oldest state law enforcement agency. ICOs are fully recognized Indiana police officers who enforce and uphold all DNR rules and regulations as well as all other Indiana state laws. ICOs spend most of their time on the job enforcing fishing and hunting regulations, conducting marine boat patrol on Indiana’s waterways and patrolling DNR properties to keep them safe and family friendly.

The units are free to use, can be reserved, circulate for one week and are only available to residents in the Bell Memorial Library’s tax district, which includes the Town of Mentone and Harrison Township, or to patrons who have purchased a library card. The hotspots use the T-Mobile/Sprint network and have exceedingly good download speeds and connectivity. Contact the library if you have any questions.

Wireless Printing The library now offers wireless printing from your smartphone or tablet. User must use the MENTONEWLAN for this to work.

Persons using wireless printing will need to know how to print

to print from their own device, Library staff cannot provide support for printing or other issues on patron owned equipment.

• Be sure you are connected to the MENTONEWLAN. • Open the item to be printed and select the print command.

• Search for the CANON MF642c series printer.

• Click on the printer icon to begin the print process.

This is a new service and the library staff are still learning how to use the machine. If there is an issue with the machine, please leave a note for Boggs or email him.

VHS Videotape Converter To Digital Another new service is the patron use VHS videotape con-

verter to digital. Contact Boggs to setup a time to come to the library to learn how to use the machine and begin digitizing homemade videotapes. Users will need to bring their own storage device such as a USB flash drive or an external hard drive.

Copying off-air programs is not allowed.

Plans are also being considered to add a document/photo scanner which will include a 35 mm film or slide scanner, a cricut machine for patron use as well as a 3-D printer. Contact Boggs at the library for more details.

Scholarship established in memory of Amber Dyson %\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU A scholarship in the annual amount of $1,000 is being established in memory of Amber Dyson, a local respiratory therapist who died of cancer April 17, 2020, at the age of 43. To help seed the scholarship with the Fulton County Community Foundation, the Rochester Optimist Club will be holding an all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfast at the Fulton County Fairgrounds from 7-11 a.m. Memorial Day, Monday, May 31.

The cost is $7 for adults, and $3 for children under 12. Carry-outs are available and donations are welcome.

A 1994 graduate of North Miami High School, Dyson went on to attend Ivy Tech and Vincennes University, which provided educational stepping stones to her eventual career as a registered respiratory technician and registered pulmonary function technician.

According to her mother, Deanna O’Neill, Dyson had asthma as a young child and always wanted to give back to others by working in the health field.

Following her graduation from Vincennes, Dyson worked for South Bend Memorial Hospital.

She had the opportunity to go to Indiana University, where O’Neill said she really got her knowledge, studying under some of the top pulmonologists in the country. She had the opportunity receive advanced training in California before taking a position at Woodlawn Hospital in Rochester. Her career continued on to Community Howard Regional Health in Kokomo where she excelled as the head of the pulmonary therapy department.

Dyson was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2019. For the next year, she underwent a variety of cancer treatments and surgeries, including a double mastectomy and a total hysterectomy.

In February 2020, she was told her cancer was in remission. However, the following month it became clear the cancer had spread into her brain and bones, which led to her death in April.

Rick O’Neill, Dyson’s stepfather, said the outpouring of support from the many people she touched throughout the region was amazing. Many people provided money to help pay for her medical bills, provided gifts for her children and offered support in many thoughtful and helpful ways.

The O’Neills said students from Rochester, Tippecanoe Valley and Caston high schools who plan to study for any aspect of the medical field will be eligible to apply for the scholarship. It will follow the recipient throughout their undergraduate career, whether two or four years, before becoming available again to a new applicant.

Dyson left behind four children, Dawson, 20; Lucas, 10; Lucy, 9; and Dexter, 4. The O’Neills have assumed legal guardianship of the youngest three children and said both Riddle and Columbia elementary schools have been very helpful, thoughtful and understanding throughout the ordeal. They also credit Rochester Church of the Heartland for providing incredible support to Dyson and the family.

Because of COVID restrictions, the O’Neills said it was very hard to provide a proper farewell to Dyson. Restrictions at the hospital, funeral home and cemetery made it difficult for her many friends and family to say their farewells.

To that end, the family will be holding a memorial service at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, lot 20, in Rochester at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 22. Anyone who knew Amber and would like to attend the event, which will include a release of more than 200 butterflies, is invited to attend.

Caleb Michael Ricketts of Rochester was among 3,512 graduates who received degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln during commencement exercises May 7 and 8.

Ricketts earned a bachelor of science in business administration with high distinction from the College of Business.

The graduates are from 58 countries, 43 states and the District of Columbia and more than 250 Nebraska communities.

Tom Osborne, former Nebraska football coach, athletic director and congressman, delivered the keynote address during the undergraduate ceremonies May 8 at Memorial Stadium. Jennifer Clarke, professor of food science and technology and statistics, and director of the Quantitative Life Sciences Initiative at Nebraska, gave the address at the graduate and professional degrees ceremony May 7 at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Riko Bishop, a judge of the Nebraska Court of Appeals, spoke to the law graduates May 7 at the arena.

Tractor show, swap coming to Mentone The Echoes of the Past will host its tractor, engine, garden tractor show and swap during the Mentone Egg Festival June 4-5, at Mentone Airport. The airport is located south of Mentone, off SR 19 on CR 600S. Hours for the show are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. both days; there is no charge for admission. Antique and vintage tractors from several decades will be featured. Case, Farmall, John Deere and more will be presented for the public to view and enjoy. The public will be asked to vote for best in show.

As tradition at Echoes of the Past events, there will be a tractor-driving experience available to attendees. The club will be staffing the driving experience from 1-8 p.m. both days. Tractor games will be from 6-8 p.m. both days as well.

Vendors will be set up at the airport during the event.

The Echoes of the Past has partnered with the Wheels on Fire Cancer Crusaders, a nonprofit mission of Beaver Dam United Methodist Church, to provide food and drinks during the show and swap. Wheels on Fire raises money to help cancer patients in Kosciusko and Fulton counties. They will be on site serving attendees and participants alike.

The Echoes of the Past makes homemade ice cream using an antique engine. The ice cream will be available to purchase both days of the show.
