%\ 1,&+2/(77( &$5/621 6WDII :ULWHU Many organizations throughout Elkhart and Kosciusko counties typically hold free Thanksgiving dinners for those who are unable to afford to make a meal themselves. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed many plans and traditions.

While many organizations have chosen to simply take up the tradition again next year and skip this year, others are going through with the plans in a redesigned manner.

Faith Mission, Elkhart On Thanksgiving, the Faith Mission will be serving various different groups in a number of ways. Between 9-11 a.m. volunteers will take part in food preparation with hot and cold food being boxed up to deliver to seniors, the homebound and a few housing establishments. Many of these names are gathered from REAL Services and the Council on Aging of Elkhart County since other meal delivery services do not run on Thanksgiving.

In past years, residents at the Faith Mission and the community were invited to all eat together on Thanksgiving at the same time. However, this year extra precaution has to be taken and so the time for the community walk-in dinner has been changed.

This year residents will eat the Thanksgiving meal at their usual meal time. The community walk-in Thanksgiving meal will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Old Jail Museum’s new co-director finds the bright side %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU There is an oft-repeated Albert Einstein quote: “In the midst of every crisis lies great opportunity.” Warsaw’s Esther Zellner, Old Jail Museum’s new co-director, learned this the hard way.

Zellner, the youngest of three children, was “born and raised” in Winona Lake and is a graduate of Warsaw High School.

In fact, her mother, Nancy, is well-known for her many years as the school’s nurse and her father, Robert, served as a volunteer fireman. So an interest in community involvement was with her from an early age.

For Zellner, this interest was manifested through radio.

In high school she interned at WRSW and later earned a degree in communication from Grace College before moving on

to Christian talk radio station AM 1490. “For 11 years I was a part-time announcer and board operator,” she recalled. “I loved the opportunity to be able to touch people’s lives all over the community.”

Eventually, Zellner decided to move to New Jersey, where her brother Brian lived with his family. After working for a while as a secretary, she decided to try to find something in the nonprofit world, where she could help the community.

She found it at a library in Lawrenceville, N.J. “I liked being able to help people learn things,” Zellner commented and she loved being surrounded by “the written word.”

But after only two years, in 2018, a quick succession of crises forced Zellner to return to Winona Lake. Her father died of a heart attack at age 84 and

her mother was diagnosed with dementia. Then, in September 2019, her sister died suddenly from a pulmonary embolism.

Zellner was eventually able to get her mother into a memory unit in Paddock Springs just before COVID-19 hit. These days she is only able to communicate with her through a window. Still, she says, “I’m grateful she’s in a memory unit where she has more nurses to interact with.”

Throughout this stressful time, Zellner became involved with Church of Good Shepherd in Winona Lake. “I needed continuity and it gave me stability, too.” The church needed a secretary and Zellner was the perfect candidate.

During the early stages of the pandemic, the church was also without a pastor and could not hold in-person services, leaving Zellner responsible for helping keep the small congregation together. For three months she maintained a contact list, checking in on members, updating prayer requests and sending out email updates.

During that time Zellner learned Old Jail Museum was in need of a co-director to serve with Greg Steffe because Sally Hogan was moving to a curatorial focus. Again, Zellner’s skill set fit the bill.

Zellner’s responsibilities include procuring and handling donations, grant writing, over-

seeing building maintenance, website updates, quarterly reports and helping find ways of raising awareness for the museum. This has proved challenging during the pandemic.

“It’s been a tough summer,” she commented and with the museum closing for the winter months in December, combined with the pandemic, there was not a lot of opportunities for fundraising. Still, with Hogan and Steffe’s mentorship and the help of volunteers, Zellner finds herself coming to the end of her annus horribilus with a new job and sense of purpose.

“There is a lot of wonderful history here in the county in danger of being lost if it’s not preserved.”

What most people don’t realize is that, as a general rule, the government will only pay the nursing home bill if a single person has spent down to $2,000.

Medicare will only cover you for a maximum of 100 days, if they cover you at all; Social Security won’t pay all these bills, either.

Instead of needing hundreds of volunteers this year, the Salvation Army is only asking

for approximately 32 volunteers.

The meal will be the same as in years past, with hot and cold containers filled with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, pie and more.

The Matterhorn is located at 2041 Cassopolis St., Elkhart.

It is asked cars do not line up before 10:30 a.m. The general rule for the meal drive-thru is

they will receive the amount of meals for the number of people in the vehicle.

While changing things up due to the pandemic, those with the Salvation Army felt it was important to continue the tradition of a free Thanksgiving meal because everyone needs a meal and no one should go without a meal on Thanksgiving.

They might take a few tips from traveling businesspeople, those office-bound middle management employees who used to bounce from desk to airport to attend regional staff meetings, make sales presentations or soothe dissatisfied clients. If they spilled something on their tie, they just bought another one.

Luggage makers offer an array of lightweight bags with straps, wheels, exterior pockets and zippered pouches designed to let you take all sorts of items from your closet and bathroom cabinet when you leave home. That may be fine if you’re hitting the highway or sailing the seas, but it’s not conducive to comfortable flying.

Tried and true travelers recommend that you start by getting an easy-to-carry backpack.

One that will hold your medications handily, then have enough room for an extra pair of socks, underwear, shorts and a T-shirt or two.

When you go to the airport, wear a comfortable pair of shoes, slacks, jacket and tennis hat that don’t have to be packed.

While you travel, always hang onto your pack so it doesn’t get ripped off.

Keep your credit cards, passport, sunglasses, pocket knife and cell phone in your pocket.

And get a leash for your glasses so they’ll hang around your neck when you take them off.

Catalano proves music keeps you young %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Like so many other musicians of his generation, Jim Catalano’s life was forever changed on Feb. 9, 1964, when as a small boy in Meadeville, Penn., he saw The Beatles perform on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” The event catapulted him into a musical journey that continues to this day. Now 67 years old, Catalano often says, “Music keeps you young.”

“When I saw The Beatles I was hooked,” he recalled. And though not musically inclined themselves, Catalano’s parents supported his passion on the condition he learn to read music, so he would be able to make a living as an instructor. Catalano began expanding his skills beyond drums to symphonic percussion, as well as vibraphones, xylophones and marimbas.

After earning a degree in music education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1975, a scholarship to Notre Dame landed him in northern Indiana, right down the road from Elkhart, “the band instrument capital of the world.” In 1977 he received his masters.

“By being at Notre Dame I was able to connect with people in the music industry.” Catalano started at Selmer in 1978, and from there worked his way to Ludwig, the world-famous drum manufacturer, which was sold to Selmer in 1981. Of the 41 years he spent in the corporate world of musical instruments, 32 of them were spent as director of marketing at Ludwig, which, coincidentally, also made the drums Ringo Starr played with The Beatles that night on “Ed Sullivan.”

Catalano credits his longevity in marketing to several things. Most importantly, he was authentic; he could really play.

“Being a player gave me credibility … I wasn’t just a guy in a suit.” Besides being a trained symphonic percussionist and performing with the Elkhart Municipal Band and Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra, Catalano has played with numerous jazz ensembles through the years, including Truth in Jazz Big Band, French Quarter Jazz Quartet, VibeNation and many others.

Another factor was his relationship with Bill Ludwig, who Catalano met after Ludwig had sold the company and retired.

It was Catalano’s idea to bring Ludwig back as an “ambassador” at trade shows and other events.

“Certain business practices are immutable,” Catalano noted, and he learned much about the past from Ludwig he was able to repurpose.

Also, Ludwig told him “the stories behind the stories of things,” giving him invaluable insights into one of the most important and revered drum makers in history. One day, Catalano hopes to write a book sharing the vast corporate knowledge he has acquired about this legendary company.

Thirdly, Catalano is always

learning, both technologically and musically, through playing with and teaching younger musicians, which he continues parttime at Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s College. “The students are so smart. The challenge is keeping up on things.”

Unlike other musicians who gave up their instrument after entering the corporate world, Catalano said, “I never left it …

I’ve been so fortunate to be able to continue playing professionally and keep my skills up.”

He has also maintained a “wholesome, family-oriented lifestyle.” Catalano and his wife, Pam have two children and eight grandchildren and, besides the aerobic exercise he gets from drumming, he often walks and rides his bike.

“This skill may not be with me forever. Every gig is a cherished blessing to me … I’m still a work in progress.”

Author writes book giving struggling marriages hope %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “I married my childhood sweetheart in 1959,” stated Jean Bufton, Goshen. “We were 19 and 21 and had three children in four years of marriage. My husband, Bill, and I are from totally different backgrounds.

And the first 10 years of our marriage was a real struggle.

But with God all things are possible. He came into our lives and transformed us. My book ‘Hope for the Days Ahead’ tells our story.”

After 10 years of marriage, neither of the Buftons were happy. “We traveled to California to visit my Aunt Mary. She’s a very godly woman and I needed advice. I told her I had three healthy children, all the material things I could hope for, but

I felt like a puzzle with a piece missing.”

Mary told her niece she needed a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. “I informed her that I went to church weekly. I prayed and did good works.”

Starting with John 3:16, Mary explained the way to have a personal relationship with Jesus.

“I prayed and asked Jesus to be part of my life. Then Aunt Mary told me I needed to start reading my Bible.”

The problem was, Bufton did not have a Bible. “The Lord remedied that, too. A college student came to my door who was working his way through school selling Bibles. I bought the biggest one he had.”

Bufton’s experience and keen insight to the needs of women developed from her many years as director of women’s

ministries at the 2,000-member Church at Rocky Peak in Chatsworth, Calif. “Bill and I taught classes to over 400 engaged couples preparing for marriage. Our class was titled ‘Fit to Be Tied.’ ” She attended Moody Bible Institute and Grace College. Bill was ordained as a minister of pastoral counseling. They were called to start Heartline Ministries in 1994, where the Buftons ministered to couples and their families.

This is Bufton’s first book, published in 2019. “The Lord put it in my heart to write the book not only to encourage couples struggling in their marriages, but in every area of their lives. I started our story with 17 yellow notepads. With the Lord’s help, the words flowed from my pen with ease.”

Fending off depression in a COVID world %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV There’s a lot of talk about getting kids back to school for their health. The COVID-19 shutdown that has curbed social interaction is affecting their health, a lot of experts report.

These same experts are overlooking the fact that the isolation is killing the elderly.

Researchers report that mortality rates rise among isolated seniors. Being cut off from social contact not only increases the likelihood that they will die sooner than their more active counterparts, it also accelerates the risk of dementia, high blood pressure and a lowering of their ability to fight stress.

Depression is hovering over every senior’s shoulder.

Then there’s the stress of coping with COVID-19. And the added angst and anxiety of losing family members and friends to death without the chance to formalize a final farewell because pandemic rules have curtailed funeral and burial services.

To avoid being bowled over by this weight, the first thing anyone must do is stay busy to lighten the load.

Keep cooking favorite meals and try a few on your to-do list.

Stay aware of your appearance. Keep your hair combed, fingernails clipped and socks clean. And keep daily dress up to par. You don’t have to don shirt and tie or high heels,

but don’t allow yourself to get shoddy and slovenly.

A warm bath is high on the list of comfortable stress relievers.

So is a catnap.

And exercise.

You don’t have to lift weights or run 20 miles a day. Take a walk around the yard a couple times each day. Maybe stroll around the whole block every second or third day.

When you’re sitting down watching television, you might stand up every time you change channel with your remote.

(Well, you don’t have to stand up every time, but you get the idea.)

A glass of wine can help smooth out the psyche, but turning to booze for relief only exacerbates depression and strengthens the stress.

Facing the source of our stress also helps. Whether it’s financial strain, yard work piling up or anything else, recognizing the reason you feel

pressured helps you identify sources of relief.

You can discuss money matters with your financial advisor or a member of the family.

If yard work is the mountain that grew out of a molehill, see if there’s a neighborhood youngster who’ll push the lawn mower around your homestead and put out the trash on collection day.

This will not only ease your concern but also give you much needed time to have coffee now and then with old colleagues — a long-recognized social activity that helps eliminate depression.

Meanwhile, stay COVID-safe.

Besides heeding the advice to wear a mask, keep a couple arm lengths between you and other people. Wash your hands after you touch anything and before you touch anything else.

And stay home if you’re sick.

You can always reschedule that coffee date.

She has been encouraged by women who are prominent Christian leaders in evangelical circles. Writer and speaker Florence Littauer wrote a forward message in Bufton’s book. Patsy Clairmont, author of “Normal is Just a Setting on Your Dryer,” is also a dear friend.

Knowing pain and sorrow firsthand, Bufton is able to help others who are struggling.

“I lost my son four years ago to cancer. I have also battled cancer twice. I believe nothing is ever coincidental. Now I understand others who have lost a child or who are sick and suffering. Thank the Lord, my last checkup showed I’m cancer free.”

Bufton calls herself 80 years young and loves being a grandma and great-grandma.

She and Bill have been blessed with three children: Bill and wife Sally, Bonnie and husband Dave, the late Jay and wife Denise, along with 11 grandchil-

One of her hobbies is photography. It’s her way of preserving memories of family and friends.

Tenney stays active to stay healthy %\ 1,&+2/(77( &$5/621 6WDII :ULWHU Every morning Georgia Tenney likes to start her day with a walk. Having lived in Pierceton for 53 years, she knows her usual route.

She walks the paths and sidewalks between three and four miles and it takes her about an hour. When she wants a change in scenery, she comes to Winona Lake to walk the trails and paths.

The goal is to walk seven days a week, four miles a day.

However, sometimes weather or life gets in the way. Tenney at least walks her usual threeto-four miles five days a week, though. She enjoys walking in the mornings because it gets her day started and gets the blood flowing By the time she gets home, she’s ready for her cup of coffee and to start her day. She also enjoys watching the morning sunrises and nature as the seasons change. Tenney loves the fall and looking at the trees as the leaves change. “That hour is for me,” she explained. It’s her “me time.”

Her father was a walker,

which she believes is how she got started. Even as she was older, when she would go home to visit, they’d go on walks and talk.

Tenney’s parents were active and lived long lives, so getting exercise and staying active has always been important to her.

Having lived in the community so long and walking so frequently, Tenney mentioned on Sundays sometimes her walks can take two hours as she stops and talks with friends and neighbors. Prior to retirement around nine years ago, she worked as a Whitko school secretary for more than 30 years.

In that time she was walking constantly. Once she retired, continuing to walk regularly became a high priority for her. While it’s always been a priority as a way to stay fit, it has simply been at different times and various amounts throughout her life.

She prefers walking because it does not wear out her knees like running would. Tenney loves being able to walk outside, even in the winter when she just bundles up a bit more.

However, in the colder months, she will also visit the Kosciusko County YMCA and participate in its Monday Enhance Fitness

For a couple of months each year Tenney and her husband typically visit Florida. There she has plenty of opportunity to walk outside along paths in the warmer weather.

Tenney also worked as a receptionist at Weight Watchers

for 11 years and continues to follow the program to keep control over her weight. She enjoys the program because it’s an easy way for her to stay healthy and cook for everyone while still enjoying food.

“Find something to do every day. Stay busy,” Tenney suggested. “It’s important to take care of yourself.”

She has 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, most of whom live in the area. She also enjoys going to watch them play sports.

“Get out and do something and stay active to stay healthy,” she emphasized. During her retirement now she commented she is enjoying everything she does.

to bank accounts. One can set up a bank account and name “pay on death” beneficiaries. When a person sets up a POD bank account (“account owner”), there are no restrictions as to the account owner’s use of the funds in the account. In fact, the account owner can use all of the funds in the account and there may be no funds left at his/her death, but if any funds do remain, the remaining funds are payable to the named “pay on death” beneficiaries. All the “pay on death” beneficiaries need do is present the financial institution with a death certificate showing the account owner’s death and the funds are immediately paid to them. The great advantage is that all of this is accomplished quickly and without going through probate for the deceased account holder.

With the Transfer on Death Deed, the owner of real estate can have his/her attorney prepare a “Transfer on Death Deed” which names the beneficiaries who are to receive ownership of the real estate after the death of the owner. The owner signs the Transfer on Death Deed and it is recorded in the county recorder’s office in the county where the real estate is located.

Once recorded, the owner is still free to do what he/she pleases with the real estate: mortgage it for a loan, sell it, or transfer it in any way, all without the consent or even knowledge of the “Transfer on Death” beneficiaries. If the owner owns the real estate at his/her death, then all the “Transfer on Death” beneficiaries need do is file with the recorder’s office an affidavit with the death certificate documenting the owner’s death, and the county records are changed to reflect the “Transfer on Death” beneficiaries as the new owners of the real estate. Again, the great value is that the transfer of

title to the real estate can be made to the “Transfer on Death” beneficiaries as soon as possible after the owner’s death and without the delay and expense of probate.

Spouses can together sign and record a “Transfer on Death” deed naming their children as the “Transfer on Death” beneficiaries. Upon the death of one spouse, there are still no restrictions on the surviving spouse’s ability to deal with the real estate. The surviving spouse can mortgage, sell, or otherwise transfer the real estate without the knowledge or consent of the “transfer on death” beneficiaries.

Once a transfer on death deed is signed and recorded, the owner(s) can make any changes they want to the “transfer on death” beneficiaries. To do so, all the owner(s) need do is sign and record a new transfer on death deed with the changes.

With respect to married couples, the surviving spouse can also change the transfer on death beneficiaries.

The “Transfer on Death Deed” is a very valuable estate planning tool. Transfer on death deeds are relatively inexpensive, but may result in a huge savings in both time and money by the avoidance of probate.

‘It’s De Wolfman, Baybeee!!!’

He couldn’t shapeshift into a wolf and his real name wasn’t Jack. In fact, when he was born in 1938, Wolfman %\ 5$1'$/ Jack was & +,// known back then simply as Bob Smith from Brooklyn.

Smith, who grew up entranced by radio personalities, wanted to “deejay” for a living. In doing so, he quickly realized that he would need a unique persona and style to make his mark in an overcrowded and competitive field.

Thus, he spent countless hours mimicking the patter of black radio hosts who spun the day’s coolest discs while apparently having a blast on the air.

Brooklynite Bob started his career in the early 1960s when he signed on with WYOU-AM in Newport News, Va. Enchanted listeners became convinced that they were grooving with a black hepcat by the name of “Daddy Jules.”

His next move took him to KCIJ-AM in Shreveport, La., where he called himself Big Smith with the Records. It was here that the horror movie

loving personality created his Wolfman Jack character, which featured black argot and rapidfire, offbeat (and often racy) gobbledygook.

His nationwide popularity, though, wouldn’t transpire until he went to work for XERFAM in northern Mexico. At 250,000 powerful watts — five times the limit set in America — the just-over-the-Texas border signal blasted throughout the southern American landscape each night, the Wolfman’s raspy delivery, eerie howls and demented schtick often fueled by unfiltered cigarettes and throat-searing whiskey. His rapt listeners dug the day’s grooviest platters amid spiels for everything from diet pills (made of sugar) to religious tracts to medical “cures.” In the studio, Wolfman was said to act every bit as “off the wall” as he sounded, his face contorting, his eyes bulging and his hands waving as he howled and growled his way through each shift.

Returning to the states, he drifted from station to station for years. Along the way, many listeners found themselves wondering: just what does this guy actually look like? (The Wolfman felt that not being seen added to his mystique.)

Eventually several Kansas City college students offered

him enough serious cash for an in-person appearance. He reluctantly agreed, insisting that first his payment — all in $20 bills — be brought to his house via a Brinks truck. Later, after he arrived at the designated venue in a limousine, he strolled onstage exhibiting prosthetic rubber cheeks, footlong fingernails, a flowing cape and oversized sunglasses. (He

recalled later that he looked “real Neanderthal.”)

Wolfman Jack portrayed himself in the 1973 film “American Graffiti,” where millions of viewers could finally connect a face to the voice. His appearance in George Lucas’ movie led to Wolfman TV commercials for acne cream, bathing suits, stereos and fast-food burgers.

By 1974, he was co-hosting

NBC-TV’s rock-oriented Midnight Special; in that same year, “Clap for the Wolfman” gave Canadian rockers Guess Who their final Top 10 single.

He wrote his autobiography — “Have Mercy: Confessions of the Original Rock and Roll Animal” — shortly before dying of a heart attack in 1995.

The Wolfman was 57 years old.

But the tools and tricks used to remember what to call any person are important to maintaining a reliable memory as you and your brain age.

A co-worker years ago leaped over the remember-names hurdle by greeting everyone with, “Hello, Judge.”

Another version of this approach is the well-known, “Hi, neighbor.”

Another colleague made up his own name for people around him, claiming he never used names “your mother called you.”

He stopped that when a exMarine of dour character took him aside one day and declared,

“My. Name. Is. Anthony.”

The initial step to remembering a name is to pay full attention when you’re being introduced.

This becomes difficult at a wedding, funeral, service club luncheon or any gathering with a lot of unfamiliar faces.

To help imprint a name in your mind, repeat it when you’re introduced. “Nice to meet you, Mike,” will help you remember his name. So will repeating it a few times as you paint his face, hair color and other physical traits into your brain.

You may be able to link him to a childhood friend, relative or movie star with the same name.

It can help, too, if his or her name has a visual connection.

Rose can be linked easily to the flower, Jay with a bird and

Rocky with the movie of the same name.

When you’re introduced to someone, or greeting a person you already know, include your name in the greeting to help them remember or recognize you.

If you’ve forgotten their name, say so and tell them your name.

At crowded events you’ll find it necessary to introduce yourself, especially as you age and the family gatherings expand.

Don’t wait to have people come and ask who you are. As you approach someone or they approach you, tell them your name and who you’re related to.

In this mode, you may not remember all their names but they’ll probably remember yours.

The massive cutback in travel resulting from the COVID-19 global shutdown has hastened their demise, allowing the airline industry to further inspect their rationale

for these iconic aircraft.

While both will be seen in airports for a few years yet, their replacement boils down to a simple matter of finances.

Boeing’s new 787 requires only 300 passengers to be full — about 100 fewer than the 747 capacity.

The Airbus 350, with a capacity topping out at 400, takes over from the A380 that had to sell as many as 550 tickets to be full.

—o— “That pig is demon possessed,” my wife of less than a year exclaimed. As the pig came down the aisle from the show ring, my wife had attempted to herd it into its pen. The 250-pound pig had lowered its head, brushed aside the wooden herding panel and knocked her over. I didn’t dare laugh at the misfortunes of my new bride (although others who saw it did).

“That pig needs to be drowned, just like you read about in the Bible,” she muttered as I helped her up and brushed the dirt from her clothes.

“Now, honey, let’s not be hasty in bringing about the pig’s form of execution. There are better ways,” I responded. “In a few days we can have it butchered and enjoy ham, bacon, sausage and pork chops. Then you will have your revenge.

If the pig is demon possessed as you claim, it will depart for places unknown when the pig is butchered. Shortly thereafter, we can have a sausage biscuit for breakfast; a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich for lunch;

and a brown sugar-cured ham for supper.” My words, for the moment, seemed to soothe her embarrassment and hurt.

Someone coined the phrase “hog heaven.” It supposedly describes a person’s feelings when they are experiencing a time of great delight and happiness. I don’t know where or what “hog heaven” is, but, at the time, my wife had anything but heavenly thoughts.

Three of the four Gospel writers record Jesus casting out the demon(s) and allowing them to enter into the herd of swine. So it had to be an event of significant importance.

For many years, our needed machinery repairs were taken to a local Christian blacksmith and repair shop. Dean, the owner, was not only talented with his hands, but also had the God-given ability to cast out demons. Almost weekly, people would call him to come cast a demon out of a family member or friend. Sometimes Dean would ask me if I wanted to go along with him when he was called upon to cast out a demon.

I always declined.

His stories of encountering demons were so vivid and scary that I didn’t want any part of getting that close to any kind of demonic activity, especially when he would describe in detail about strange voices coming from inside a person; how people would be thrown violently to the floor and then writhe in

pain; and how one family would need to hold a person down so they would not hurt themselves or others.

His encounters would make the best spooky Halloween movie or story ever produced.

Although I liked to think I was as tough as John Wayne or Jimmy Stewart, this was one area where I wanted no part.

Dean was very Christ-like and a man of much prayer.

He often said, “Unless you’re prayed up, you will never have the anointed power to cast out demons.”

The human finite mind can’t really grasp just how powerful Satan or one of his demons can be. When I first heard the story of the maniac and how Jesus cast out the demon(s), I figured they must be really powerful.

Those demons, when allowed to enter the herd of swine, caused them to jump into the lake and commit suicide. That is powerful.

‘Lola’ was the Kinks’ most appreciated concert piece The Kinks In June of 1970, during a 24-hour break in the Kinks’ touring schedule, leader Ray Davies %\ 5$1'$/ jetted from & +,// New York $ %RRPHU %ODVW to London 7R 7KH 3DVW and back — a 6,000-mile round trip — in order to change a mere

two words in the band’s latest Arista Records single. It wasn’t that the controversial song “Lola” concerned a man romancing a transvestite but the fact that Davies had committed a UK faux pas in his opening lyrics: “I met her in a club down in old Soho” “Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca-Cola” “C-O-L-A Cola” The problem? The publicowned BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) didn’t allow the use of brand names in

recordings. Thus, Davies was required to switch the trademarked “Coca-Cola” name to the generic “cherry cola” in order to ensure airplay in his native country.

According to legend, Davies composed the work after he and record producer friend Robert Wace had gone to a Paris — not London — nightclub. Wace, reportedly a heavy-duty imbiber, was said to have begun moving on a sultry woman there, enjoying their dances and soon confiding to Davies, “I’m really on to a good thing here.” But Davies

thought he detected something odd: the seductive lady, whose name was Lola, seemed to have a bit of chin stubble.

Davies decided that Wace was too drunk to notice.

“She walked like a woman but talked like a man” From that incident came the first Kinks Top 10 hit in years, their last chart success being the Reprise label’s “Tired of Waiting for You” back in 1965 — an eternity in the fleeting world of rock music fame. While the quartet had released numerous excellent 45s in the later 1960s, a

Wherever you live, always check the weather forecast before getting behind the wheel.

Blizzards and black ice are a concern in snow country, while hurricanes or sandstorms can make driving in warm climates just as treacherous.

If you haven’t already, take your auto in for its annual checkup. Have all belts and fluids topped off. Install winter tires and make sure their air pressure and tread are up to par.

Toss a blanket and warm hat or cap in the back seat. Tuck a windshield ice scraper and snow brush under the front seat.

Check your disaster kit to make sure it has a flashlight

and batteries, first-aid kit, candle and matches, gloves and snacks. Check the trunk to see if you have battery jumper cables and road flares. A shovel might also be handy.

During the winter, don’t let your fuel level drop below half a tankful. And don’t venture out when the weather’s bad.

When you do head for a drive, brush and scrape off all ice and snow from the windshield, windows, mirrors, hood, bumpers, cameras and any other sensors on the vehicle.

Let the engine run a few moments before backing out of the driveway.

Dashing through the snow is a no-no. Take it easy. Avoid

quick stops and sudden turns, they can slip-slide you into trouble. And give traffic around you plenty of room.

If you’ve grown up in this type of weather, remind yourself how to relax during a skid on icy roads: take your foot off the gas and don’t slam on the brakes. If the back end fishtails, steer into the direction of the skid. After some slowing down, you pump the brakes gently to gain control.

Staying home is the healthiest way to avoid a driving disaster during winter cold. But using your head can help make a trip through the snow a more pleasant experience.

Don’t fall prey to these scams on seniors %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Stay-at-home seniors are easy marks for crooks. The COVID-19 shutdowns, changing regulations and general pandemonium have made it easier for these vultures to confuse and confound their victims.

High on the list of scams is a caller pretending to be from a bank or credit card company seeking to straighten out some issue or threaten you with penalties for a reported late payment. Be wary even of similar snail mail correspondence.

Don’t call the number left by the caller or letter writer. Use the contact numbers on your bank or credit card statements to straighten out the matter.

Other crooked calls claim you’re late with tax payments, won a major prize or face legal prosecution for some fictitious matter.

There’s also the caller who’s supposedly checking on an attack on your credit line, who asks to verify personal information — from address to Social Security, credit card and bank account numbers.

Be especially suspicious of any unidentified emails that creep onto your computer or cell phone.

In the song, Davies kept the language ambiguous: “I’m glad that I’m a man and so is Lola” And listeners who paid attention to Davies’ lyrics could never be sure of Lola’s sex: “Girls will be boys and boys will be girls” “It’s a mixed-up, muddledup, shook-up world” Due to its risqué allusions, the tune was banned in Australia but did become a No. 2 hit in Britain, a No. 9 smash in the USA and a Top 10 success in 11 other countries.

Davies often took credit for the entire song: “I wrote ‘Lola’ to be a great record, not a great song. Something that people could recognize in the first five seconds.” Actually, his brother Dave — and fellow Kink — wrote the music, with Davies adding the wry lyrics afterwards. During the recording sessions, four or five versions were attempted, with different keys being tried as well as various overall styles.

In 1985, “Weird Al” Yankovic created a “Lola” parody that he dubbed “Yoda,” which featured lyrics about the iconic Star Wars character.

While “Lola” became one of the Kinks’ most appreciated concert pieces, it would be another 13 years before the band would enjoy its final Top 10 hit single, “Come Dancing.”

Squash — a nutritious comfort food

Eating a whole food plantbased lifestyle seems to get easier and easier once you set your mind to it and realize, for the majority of us, eating off plant foods in moderation is just a license to justify what you eat.

There is so much that is out of our control right now, but what we can control is what we are putting in our mouths and that we are moving to the best of our abilities. This is your calling to start or continue to ensure you are at your best self as we enter winter where we will spend more time indoors with less opportunity to move, move, move. Nutrition is going to be key in your health.

A friend of my husband’s has a large garden and he gave us a variety of squash last week. I love me some squash! Squash is a superfood filled with beneficial antioxidants that can protect you from disease and

enhance your immune system.

The scientific name for squash is cucurbita and since squash contains seeds and develops from the flower-producing part of a plant, it is botanically a fruit. They are low calorie and high in vitamins A, D and C, and rich in potassium along with a host of other vitamins and minerals.

The young fruit is known as summer squash and are considered a nonstarchy vegetable.

They have a tender and edible rind, which leads to a shorter life unlike winter squash. Summer squash would be yellow squash, zucchini or pattypan.

Sautéing a simple mixture of yellow squash and/or zucchini along with mushrooms and onions make a lovely dish.

Winter squash is a more mature fruit with a hardened tough ring. Most winter squash can be stored for use all winter.

There are at least 11 variety of winter squash including: Butternut, pumpkin, spaghetti, delicata, hubbard and buttercup. I cooked a buttercup last night and just winged it by cleaning out the seeds from the top as you would a pumpkin and then sprinkling nutmeg on the inside and dicing up an unpeeled apple and placing that in the cavity. I loosely put foil over the top and baked it in the oven until tender. I suppose

if you wanted some sweetness you could add brown sugar or maple syrup, but I did not. Wow — was it ever good. The recipe below uses quinoa, but you could adapt it to use a more traditional whole grain bread stuffing. Enjoy and stay well.

Vegan Stuffed Acorn Squash Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 35 minutes Total Time: 45 minutes Ingredients 2 acorn squash, halved and seeds scooped out For the stuffing: 1 yellow onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup quinoa 2 cups vegetable broth ½ cup chopped nuts or seeds ½ cup dried cranberries ½ teaspoon thyme ¼ teaspoon sage ¼ teaspoon black pepper 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon Salt to taste Instructions To cook the acorn squash: 1. Preheat your oven to 400 F for four squash halves. Bake cut side facing down on baking pan lined with parchment paper for 25 to 35 minutes until the squash is fork tender.

To make the quinoa filling: 1. Water saute onions and garlic until the onions turn translucent and just begin to brown, about 5 minutes. Add

9(*$1 678))(' $&251 648$6+ the quinoa and vegetable broth and cover with a lid. Bring to a boil and then simmer for 10 to 15 minutes until the vegetable broth is absorbed and the quinoa is cooked.

2. Once the quinoa is cooked, stir in all of the remaining ingredients, the nuts or seeds, cranberries, thyme, sage, pep-

per, cinnamon and add salt to taste. Remove from heat.

To stuff the acorn squash: 1. Divide the quinoa mixture evenly among the acorn squash halves, packing it into the well of the squash.

The hole truth — A Hoosier pastime I’m a born and bred (mostly Jewish rye) New Yorker, but I’ve lived for 40 years in Indianapolis.

More and more of those customers see the convenience of having groceries delivered, just like the pizza they nosh on while restocking their fridges, cupboards and freezers.

Prognosticators argue that home delivery is the future of food and home cooking will slip slowly into the past.

Historians point out this is a return to earlier days. Food pickup and delivery is nothing new.

In the late 19th century, a massive bicycle food delivery service for office workers was initiated in India. The success of this still robust dabbawala system (200,000 lunches are delivered daily in the city of Mumbai alone) is being studied

by FedEx. Reaching further back into history, you’ll find ancient Romans’ go-to spots for meals

were assorted streetside bars because kitchens at home were something only the elite could afford.

Pizza spurred the food delivery phenomenon on this side of the Atlantic shortly after World War II, when a Los Angeles restaurant offered free home delivery of the popular snack.

Nowadays, anyone with a smart phone can pull up their favorite eatery site on a food delivery app, punch in their order and opt for delivery instead of dining out or picking up the meal themselves.

You no longer need to store menus from your favored eating places. The dishes are listed online — just like the illustrations of the groceries you shop for online.

The cyberspace connection allows diners to tailor their selections to their taste: not too spicy, no salt, sauce on the side and so on. Your preferences, whether for dining or groceries, stay in the system and don’t have to be repeated in subsequent orders.

The restaurant and delivery industries are competing vigorously for dominance in their fields as the population moves gradually back into history and takes advantage of the convenience of having food delivered straight to their doorstep.

Then he stepped back to 60 feet and made another 50 in a row, several from behind his back.

He said the key to holding the bag was to get a grip, probably the same expression his wife uses when he spends all day and night throwing bean bags.

I also watched some championship matches. I felt sorry for the announcers who didn’t have a lot of things to analyze. There were a lot of “oohs” and “aahs.”

And two “wows.” They said “it’s a game of inches” about a dozen times.

Bottom line, I went and I played. I wasn’t very good at cornhole, but I got to meet a lot of new people: Jill, Kay, Ellen, Steve, another Steve. Cynthia and Bob. Everyone had on a mask, many wore sunglasses

and a cap, so I don’t have a clue how I’ll recognize them next time Mary Ellen and I walk around the neighborhood. Everyone had a name tag on that night, but it would be awkward to ask people to wear their ID whenever they walk out their front door for the next couple of years.

Mary Ellen is concerned about the virus, so we were constantly rubbing our hands with sanitizer gel, which is why several of my shots landed not in the hole but in the lake. Despite all the food people had brought, I wasn’t allowed to eat anything because, to quote my wife, “No way your hands are completely clean after you’ve touched every person’s equipment in the neighborhood.”

I looked up the history of cornhole and there were over a dozen theories about when the game

began and how it got its name.

My favorite was from a woman who claims her-great grandfather, in l899, found some rotten corn and a plank with a hole in it. Her grandfather’s name, she says, was Timothy Cornhole.

Hmmm, very convenient. If his last name had been Backgammon, well how confusing would that have been?

The day after that neighborhood gathering, I saw a neighbor outside and I asked him if he had played the previous night because I didn’t recognize his legs. Peter, who is an engineer, said he would have done better had he taken into account the lubricity of the board. When I got home, I looked up the term “lubricious,” by mistake. If you Google that word, you’ll agree it would have made the game a lot more exciting.

have any connection with another such service. Or you might be able to offer it cheaper than the more popular franchised businesses and for extended hours.

World War II: War Mothers and Dads’ Christmas %\ 3$6725 *5(* /$:621 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU (EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the first part of a two-part series.)

—o— It was not just in Elkhart but across America where there were

chapters of the “American War Dads” and equally chapters of the “Mothers of World War II.” In Elkhart, the Mothers of World War II soldiers were members of “Unit 9.” Just prior to this particular Christmas of December 1943, 90 persons, members of Unit 9, met in a joint session

“at the unit’s canteen, 116 Tyler Street,” across from the Elkhart depot.

Several guests were on hand this cold and snowy Thursday evening, one being “The Rev. Ralph Holdeman, pastor of the Bethel Evangelical Church.” He presented a speech about “Unfin-

ished Business.”

Why three other guests were present is unknown, but they may have been visiting relatives: “WAC Pvt. Rose Lee Burrouos of Ft. Warren, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Tech. Fifth Grade Eugene Stoner of Boston, Mass.; and Corp. Roy Huff of Maxwell Field, Ala.” To make the evening more festive, “Christmas carols were sung by Mr. and Mrs. Anthony and Mr. and Mrs. Chris Bender.”

Perhaps these two couples had sons in the service during WWII and family members still live today in the Elkhart community.

During the meeting, “It was announced that (several) sympathy cards have been sent recently to bereaved families whose sons have been killed in action. On a more pleasant note, “32 birthday cards” were sent to various service personnel of Elkhart families.

Certain works of these Elkhart mothers and dads did not go unnoticed by the WWII GIs as “13 letters have been received from service men in Italy thanking the unit for cigarettes sent them.”

Elkhart’s Salvation Army was also a blessing to the city’s service personnel and their families.

One example was “a mother

whose son had just arrived home on furlough.” Just before Christmas, the Salvation Army gave this mother the first “basket of groceries for a Christmas dinner…”

Another “65 dinners” would be provided for various Elkhart families that wonderful Christmas season of December 1943, “at a cost of $5 to $10 a basket.”

From Thanksgiving to near Christmas Day, the Salvation Army had collected “1,035” in the downtown business district, money to be used for “toys and to provide winter relief, including medical supplies, to families living inside the city.”

War Mothers and Dads’ chapters may no longer exist as they did back in World War II, but somewhere in America there most certainly exist mothers, dads, family and friends who have not forgotten the GIs who welcome the birthday cards, Christmas cards and especially the gifts or other items whenever a holiday or special event occurs.

In any event, may God bless the Salvation Army for their ongoing work in helping those in need.

An argument could be made that the biggest load of World War II landed on the shoulders of 30-year-old U.S. Army Air Corps Col. Paul Warfield Tibbets Jr. Tibbets commanded and trained an entire bomb group before personally piloting the B-29 that dropped the first atomic bomb.

He had already flown 43 combat missions over Europe when he returned to the U.S. in February 1943 to help with the problem-ridden development of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress. Tibbets would name his bomber “Enola Gay” after his mother while it was still on the assembly line at the Martin plant in Bellevue, Neb. In September 1944, he was named commander of the 509th Composite Group.

Tibbets was selected for these duties because he was recognized as the best flier in the Army Air Corps.

The 509th was a selfcontained unit comprised of 1,700 men and 15 B-29s with a high priority for unlimited military supplies. Tibbets chose Wendover on the UtahNevada border for the group’s base because of its remoteness.

He moved his wife and family with him to Wendover because he felt that allowing married men to be accompanied by their families would improve morale.

The pilots of the 509th made hundreds of runs over the Mojave Desert and Salton Sea in southern California, dropping replicas of the nuclear bombs. While he had been briefed briefly on the Manhattan Project, which

was designing the bomb his crews would carry, not even Tibbets knew the full scope of their mission.

To explain the presence of all the highly technical civilian engineers who were working on the secret project, he lied to his wife, telling her they were “sanitary workers.”

It worked. She recruited a scientist to unplug a drain in their apartment.

At 2:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, 1945, the Enola Gay lifted off from Tinian, the Mariana Island just 1,500 miles from Japan, for the six-hour run to Hiroshima. With Tibbets at the controls, the 10,000-pound Little Boy bomb was dropped at 8:15 a.m.

After a second atomic bomb was dropped two days later on Nagasaki, Japan surrendered.

Tibbets received the Distinguished Service Cross and was celebrated as a national hero. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1959.

“I’m proud that I was able to start with nothing, plan it and have it work as perfectly as it did ... I sleep clearly every night,” he said. “I knew when I got the assignment it was going to be an emotional thing. We had feelings, but we had to put them in the background.

“We knew it was going to kill people right and left. But my one driving interest was to do the best job I could so that we could end the killing as quickly as possible.”

A Hollywood film, “Above and Beyond” starring Robert Taylor, was made in 1952 about Tibbets’ leadership in the development of the 509th Bomb Group.

Tibbets died Nov. 1, 2007, in Columbus, Ohio. His ashes were scattered over

1. First off, agree where

3. Know about emergency supplies.

You should have a section of the pantry set aside for three days’ worth of victuals.

Make sure all your medications can be grabbed quickly to take with you. Pull out our contact list and add your family doctor and a list of your medications.

Pack a backpack with a flashlight, batteries, extra socks, first-aid kit and a small radio.

Keep it in your car. Make sure you also have jumper cables, road flares, a tire pump and pressure gage in the vehicle.

You can also set aside a comfortable wardrobe — sweat pants and shirt, light jacket, comfortable shoes and a cap or hat — that can be packed in a bag and tucked into a closet for quick, easy access.

Coronavirus has changed daily life %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV There’s a never-ending stream of predictions and prognostications about how our lives will change as we come out of the COVID-19 shutdowns.

Our lives already have changed.

Folks who never gave a thought to having groceries delivered have settled into this convenience for the rest of their lives. They’ve discovered the ease of shopping online and dropping by the source to have their order deposited in their trunk in minutes, instead of spending an hour or two pushing a cart up and down aisles after competing with countless other vehicles for a parking spot.

Many have realized the added comfort of having their goods dropped off at their doorstep.

This movement has spurred growth opportunities for delivery services. Some companies have even devoted time and effort to developing drone delivery capabilities.

Shaking hands is disappearing. It doesn’t exist among the Japanese, who greet each other with a bow. Now we’re all learning to meet and greet with a fist bump or touching elbows.

Touching your face has become a no-no equal to chewing your fingernails, which is also a don’t-touch-your-face no-no.

We’ve learned that stroking your beard, pushing the hair back over your forehead, licking your fingers to turn a page or rubbing your eyes are all mechanisms that can deposit germs into your system. That’s why we now wash our hands several times a day and carry sanitizer wherever we go.

Calling or emailing your doctor also is a novel approach to health. Telemedicine has made giant strides in the few months this pandemic has

been in force.

Much of this progress is due to the fact that insurance companies have begun to pay for these cyberspace calls.

Getting a diagnosis and medication has, in many cases, become as easy as making a phone call.

The home office and workshop have become a bigger part of working lives. Employees have discovered the comfort and convenience of not having to dress up for work or to spend time commuting.

Plus, they don’t have to drop the kids off at and pay for a child care center.

Employers have seen that they don’t have to provide expensive equipment and space to have their work produced, whether it’s schematics or sales. Computers provide the capability to have all this and more achieved remotely.

Researchers report that more than one-third of office work can now be performed at home.

Booking a flight? Ask these new questions %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV A few years ago, colleagues heading to Europe gave themselves plenty of layover time (over eight hours) between landing and boarding the second leg of their flight. They wanted to avoid repeating a misadventure where they had missed a flight because mischievous weather and a mechanical problem delayed their initial flight.

Both weather and mechanical operations worked smoothly on this occasion and, when they checked in the British Air desk on arrival, they were told there was a flight to their desired destination in another 90 minutes. When asked if there were any seats, the airline counter personnel all smiled, nodded and said there were plenty.

The travelers pulled out their tickets to have them changed for the handy next flight. Still smiling, the coun-

ter manager pushed them back and said the tickets couldn’t be exchanged and the fare was 81 euros each.

And no, there would be no refund on the tickets they’d already bought for the later flight.

The flyers tucked their tickets back in their travel bag and spent a leisurely day lounging around, window shopping and dining in the airport until their evening flight.

Their return home was the last time they flew British Air. Their airline experience hasn’t improved much since then, but they’re now more aware of the airlines’ high-handed practices and ask a lot more questions before booking any flight.

The shock waves weaving through the travel industry due to COVID-19 have resulted (among many distressing turns of events) in booked travel of all varieties being cancelled. This has left thousands of travelers holding worthless travel packages and

tickets, with no hope of any refund.

In most cases, the airlines have offered vouchers to make good on ticket holders’ travel plans if they re-book within 24 months.

However, there’s no assurance the customers will get the same level of seating, for the same price, on the same type of aircraft, for the same flights.

With the travel industry hemorrhaging profusely right now, don’t expect a rosier picture for travelers when the pandemic ends. You can bet prices will soar to recoup costs and adjust for the cutback in services.

To attract passengers in the meantime, United Airlines recently dropped its $200 change fee on domestic tickets except for basic economy fares.

(Note that the ticket holder forfeits any surplus if the new fare is lower.) It may sound like a token move, but it’s a massive shift for the airline,

which collected $625 million in ticket change fees in 2019, according to U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

The announcement prompted Alaska Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Airlines to follow suit. The companies also have initiated a series of what they consider innovative customer service benefits.

So among the things to ask when booking a flight these days: • Have standby fees been waived?

• What flights have eliminated change fees?

• Is there a credit if the new fare is lower than the existing price?

“We want our customers to book and travel with peace of mind,” stated Delta CEO Ed Bastian, “knowing that we’ll continue evaluating our policies to maintain the high standard of flexibility they expect.”

So go ahead! You should ask a lot of questions when you make your travel plans.

Most of us have several types of insurance coverage: auto accident damage and liability, mortgage or renter’s, long-term care, home damage and liability, and death (called life insurance for some strange reason).

And when we take a trip, many of us pick up a travel insurance coverage.

All of us hope we never have to file a claim on any of these policies, while we benignly hope beneficiaries of our death insurance will remember us a bit more fondly.

But there’s work to be done to collect any benefits after the trauma of a crippling auto ac-

cident or destructive home fire.

And it has to be done quickly — usually while you’re still emotionally addled and physically drained by the happenstance.

Your first step is to find the policies that apply to your loss, with all the pertinent information about where to file your claim.

In some cases, you can call the agent who sold you the policy to get some advice.

That means you should keep your insurance policies handy.

Someone else in the family or your attorney should also know where they are because you could be hospitalized and someone would have to launch your claim for you.

Make sure to follow all instructions to the letter.

Unanswered questions or an overlooked step will delay the process and require redundant correspondence with the insurance company.

Keep every police and medical report and all other bits of information connected to the incident that prompted the claim. And every receipt. If you’re in doubt about whether a document is relevant, keep it and let the company toss it out.

If our claim involves lost or damaged property, it helps to have a prepared inventory (photographs are best) of all your property, along with a list of what’s missing or destroyed.

Keep a file of all correspon-

dence and conversations with the insurers.

And don’t take no for an answer. Their job is to avoid paying out for nonqualifying and fraudulent claims. Your job is to prove to them that your claim qualifies.

Be persistent. If you hit a wall in your initial stages, ask to speak to your contact’s supervisor and present your case. n’t work, discuss If this doesn’t the matter with th your attorney.

When you file claims for long-term care reimbursement, make copies

of your receipts before sending the originals to the insurance company. When matters become confusing or don’t meet your expectations, call and ask for clarification and how to solve any problems.

Historical Hindsight —

Truth and legend about Amelia Earhart %\ 720 02552: 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Fables have had time to become confused with the facts about the life and loss of Amelia Earhart.

So many myths surround the career of the famed flyer that the truth has become hidden in historical rewrites.

We know that she was born July 24, 1887, in Atchison, Kan. She apparently developed a passion for adventure at a young age and learned to fly an airplane.

In 1928, Earhart became the first woman to cross the Atlantic by airplane — achieving celebrity status even though she wasn’t the pilot. She kept a log of the 20-hour, 40-minute trip while a pilot and co-pilot handled the controls.

Four years later, Earhart piloted a Lockheed Vega 5B from Newfoundland to Ireland to become the first woman to make a solo nonstop transatlantic flight.

She set several other records and wrote best-selling books about her experiences. She also was instrumental in forming The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots.

And then she disappeared.

During an attempt to fly

around the world in 1937 in a Lockheed Model 10-E Electra, Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan vanished over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island.

Various theories have been offered as to how they disappeared without a trace on July 2, 1937.

One of the most controversial is the survival theory. It claims Earhart survived World War II in Japanese custody and then somehow was repatriated back to the United States in 1945.

Some researchers give this story a faint possibility.

Another idea — that Earhart and Noonan crash-landed in Saipan and were captured by the Japanese shortly after — was chronicled in “Daughter of the Sky,” a biography by Paul Briand Jr. published in 1960.

The book prompted CBS newsman Fred Goerner to travel to Saipan four times to interview numerous native “eyewitnesses” and write his best-selling “The Search for Amelia Earhart” in 1966.

According to Goerner’s theory, Earhart made a forced landing on or near the Japanese-held Marshall Islands in the central Pacific.

There reportedly is considerable evidence indicating the two

might have been held as prisoners on Saipan in the Marianas Islands.

In Donald M. Wilson’s “Lost Legend” (1993) as well as “With Our Own Eyes: Eyewitnesses to the Final Days of Amelia Earhart” by Mike Campbell (2002), other eyewitness accounts have been recorded.

However, no hard evidence exists to support any Earhart survival theory. Specifically, no evidence, either documented or anecdotal, has been found that supports the idea that Earhart ever left Saipan.

The pilot’s “eyewitnessed” presence on Saipan remains a major area of contention. Some claim simply that Earhart and Noonan died at the hands of the Japanese and their bodies were buried secretly.

Post-war survival rumors persist, however. There was a bizarre story about her living in the Japanese Emperor’s Palace in Tokyo as Hirohito’s mistress.

This, combined with the theory of a government conspiracy to “repatriate” Earhart, would have to have been an extremely secret matter.

Questions persist. If she did survive, how could Earhart never connect with her family — especially her mother, with whom she was extremely

Contrary to popular belief, by the way, Amelia’s marriage to publisher George Putnam was not a marriage of convenience.

While their husband and wife

business team was unusual for the time, the myth was discredited in “Whistled Like a Bird,” (1997) by Putnam’s granddaughter, Sally Putnam Chapman. She provides numerous letters and diary entries that show the couple had a normal and loving marriage.

Telemedicine: the future is now %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Getting cured in cyberspace sounds like science fiction. But it’s already here.

Telemedicine — the practice of getting diagnosis and treatment via your laptop or cell phone — has been gaining traction rapidly as the way to monitor and maintain your health.

The advantage of being able to contact a doctor remotely has been accentuated during the COVID-19 pandemic with people confined to quarters.

Accelerating this drive to remote servicing is the unavailability of health care in rural and some urban areas because of the diminishing number of doctors while the over-65 crowd grows at the rate of 10,000 people a day. As it stands, one out of five residents live in areas that have been identified as being short on health professionals.

Telemedicine also opens the door to specialists as well as second opinions without taking up too much of the health expert’s consulting time. It also reduces the stress on the patient and eliminates the need to travel to an appointment, which in many cases requires the patient to find a driver.

lack of computer equipment or skills find a telephone conversation may work as well.

And Medicare has expanded its coverage of medical treatment by phone or computer.

While not all health insurance companies are following suit, several recognize that telemedicine helps reduce health care costs. For example, it allows primary care physicians to schedule appointments at any time and not just the traditional office hours. It also reduces unnecessary office and emergency room visits. And it lowers the cost of patient noshows.

A barrier in the way of expanding telemedicine is the reimbursement rules that require treatment to be conducted in specific sites, such as the doctor’s office or a health center, to qualify. Government licensing laws also get in the way.

Federal law requires telemedicine health care providers to be fully licensed to practice medicine in the state where the patient is physically located.

Providers in health systems that have locations in more than one state may need to apply for and pay to maintain multiple licenses, since current interstate licensing laws vary.

Flying’s not the only way to go %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Fearful flyers have had a lot of time to think about when and whether to board another airliner.

Researchers report as many as one out of three people are either afraid or anxious about flying.

Data also reveals that one out of every four passengers aboard any flight is a whiteknuckler.

A late colleague logged thousands of miles in his constant global search for top-grade material for his company, but he remembers none of them. The

only way he could get himself to board a plane was to fortify himself with booze so he could fall asleep immediately after buckling himself him.

Airlines boast of their safety record and rightly so. Flying ranks atop the list of travel methods for safety, speed and cost. But senior travelers who can take their time to get around do have other options.

You could look instead for a cruise ship to transport you comfortably to and from Rio or Rome without having to be crowded into an uncomfortable seat in an uncomfortable metal tube.

Another maritime alternative is a freighter. While the quarters aren’t as luxurious as a mega-liner, they can be just as comfortable at a third of the cost.

The COVID-19 shutdown and border closings have given everyone a new look at daily living and time to consider how they’re going to live the rest of their lives. Visiting friends and family has climbed higher up the travel ladder.

Since many of your family members are probably within the U.S., driving can replace flying. And you don’t have to wear a mask when you’re behind the wheel!

Still, there’s no doubt flying still is the safest and quickest way to get you there. This becomes especially attractive the farther away your destination is.

It’s not stretching the truth to say it’s not fun anymore.

Airlines that take proper precautions by mandating masks are still squeezing you into a snug seat after you’ve manhandled whatever luggage you’re allowed through airport gates, security and crowds.

If you do decide to fly, health experts advise you to pick a window seat. This puts you in a position where you’ll have the least number of people sitting near you and keeps you away from the busy aisle.

Wear a mask, take hand sanitizer with you and, wherever possible, distance yourself from other people, they add.

A century ago: booze, baseball and women’s suffrage %\ 720 02552: 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV A lot of things happened 100 years ago — but somehow they don’t seem that long ago.

Women of the U.S. finally received the right to vote in 1920 as the result of a worldwide suffrage effort that began several decades earlier. Most western allied powers extended voting rights to women about the same time: Canada in 1917; Britain and Germany, 1918; Austria and the Netherlands, 1919.

The Volstead Act, which became the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, took effect in 1920. It made consumption of alcoholic beverages illegal — launching an era notorious for illegal distilleries and the smuggling and sale of contraband booze.

Within a week after Prohibition went into effect, portable stills and their product were on sale throughout the country.

Purveyors of booze would keep a bottle tucked in the top of their boot. When they encountered someone who wanted a quick drink, the “bootlegger” would find an outof-the way spot and pull out the bottle to sell the customer a quick snort.

The period created millionaire gangsters such as Al Capone, Bugs Moran, Dutch Shultz and many others who were active in or financed smuggling whiskey and rum from Canada, Cuba and Mexico. Murder became rampant.

By 1925, Baltimore columnist H. L. Mencken believed Prohibition was not working.

“Prohibition worked best when directed at its primary target: the working-class poor,” he wrote. A rich family could have a cellar full of liquor, but if a poor family had one bottle of home brew, there would be trouble.

Many wealthy families bought the entire inventories of liquor retailers and wholesalers. The practice reached all the way to the White House.

Woodrow Wilson moved his supply of alcohol to his Washington, D.C., residence after his term ended. His successor Warren G. Harding relocated his own supply to the White House after inauguration.

The 18th Amendment was repealed in 1933. Happy days returned again.

Also in 1920, the Chicago White Sox baseball team became known as the “Black Sox” for a game-fixing scandal in which eight members of the team were accused of throwing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. The scheme reportedly was devised by notorious gambler Arnold Rothstein.

One young Sox fan confronted star player “Shoeless” Joe Jackson outside the courthouse in Chicago with the now famous quote, “Say it ain’t so, Joe!” Jackson, a hero to youngsters

across America, could neither read nor write. His fans maintain he was duped into being part of something he didn’t understand.

During the 1940s, Jackson worked in a convenience store in Georgia. One day the legendary Ty Cobb came in for supplies. Nothing was said at first. Cobb finally broke the silence.

“Don’t you know me, Joe?” he asked.

Jackson nodded his head, saying, “Sure, Ty, but I figured

you wouldn’t want to know me.”

One other notable baseball event of 1920: Boston Red Sox pitcher-slugger George “Babe” Ruth was sold to the New York Yankees for $125,000.

The sale that doubled his salary to $20,000 a year initiated the infamous Curse of the Bambino. After winning five world championships, including the 1919 series, Boston then had a non-title drought that spanned more than eight decades.

Hillman, located in northern Michigan, is approximately 20 miles west of Alpena. It offers big city amenities in a beautiful rural setting.

Thunder Bay River meanders quietly through the town. The home, now owned by the Indianapolis Museum of Art and designated a National Historic Landmark, reopened to the public in August after being closed since March.

Commissioned in 1952, the home features an open layout with bold splashes of color, floor to ceiling book and display cases and a large conversation pit in the living room. The clothesline off the large kitchen/laundry room is hidden from view by translucent panels. Unique to the home is the fact that the ceilings are supported by cruciform steel columns instead of the interior walls. Skylights around the perimeter of the rooms let natural light enter.

As you might expect, this is not a Bob the Builder project.

World-renowned architect Eero Saarinen designed it. T he interiors and some of the furniture and floor coverings were designed by equally famous Alexander Girard and landscaping to the 13.5-acre property, which is all done on a grid with straight lines of trees and hedges, was done by Daniel Urban Kiley. Cost of the house was $500,000, and that didn’t include the furnishings, many of which were either imported or hand-woven, the swimming

pool or the landscaping.

Though the house was designed for entertaining, the Millers raised their family of five children (two boys and three girls) in this house. The children’s area includes a common area/play room with rather small “dorm style” rooms at one end of the house.

They’re said to have loved to run across the living room and jump into the 12-by-12foot conversation pit where they also held their slumber parties.

Gaping at the towering walls whose sharp pinnacles leapt skyward, it looked like the earth had been splashed with multi-hued red dyes, all running together.

Such is life among the five national parks of southern Utah: Arches, Bryce, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Zion.

These parks share uncompromising splendor, a history of both the earth and the country, and a sense of personal sanctuary. Yet they each have their differences.

The trail to Delicate Arch, one of the park’s most famous, requires hiking slick rock at seemingly 90-degree angles at times. The visual wonder makes it worth the climb.

The view from Island in the Sky at 6,000 feet embraces 2,000-foot cliffs rising out of a magnificently colorful landscape.

Grandview Point offers a panorama that stretches across countless canyons, providing a broad view of the entire park.

Shafer Trail, a dirt road that’s rough in spots and very rough in others, is bordered on one side by perpendicular cliffs and on the other by the aforementioned 1,300-foot sheer drop.

Although geologic history is stressed in every park, it’s what defines Capitol Reef. The park’s rock ranges from 80 million to 270 million years old.

A stroll along the nearby Grand Wash River bed, so narrow in parts you can touch both canyon walls at the same time, evoked old film images of the lonesome cowboy out on the trail. This is Butch Cassidy country. He used to ride along this stream bed (it had water in it then) and hide among the caverns in the cliffs.

Not surprisingly, the area is now called Cassidy Arch.

Bryce Canyon is synonymous with hoodoos — phantasmagoric shapes emerging from weird and wonderful rock formations.

There are thousands of the little (and not so little) guys in all shapes, colors and sizes.

The park’s unique rain and ice patterns sculpt them out of the rusted limestone.

The color intense view from Aqua Canyon — vivid coppers glowing in ochre and vermilion and vying with slashes of oranges and invading magentas — challenges the most expensive of cameras to reproduce it accurately.

Arriving at Zion reinforces that each park is unique. At the other parks, your line of sight extends out toward the horizon and down into the canyons. At Zion, you look straight up ... and up ... and up.

Some of the tallest cliffs in the world tower over you on each side. They meet the sky at a point that strains both the neck and the imagination.

The soft-running Virgin River is responsible for creating the huge rock gorges that encircle Zion. It took only 5 to 16 million years to do so.
