Seasonal camping — reserving an RV spot for the entire season, April 15 to Oct. 15 — is a growing trend. Locally, it’s already the norm. Campgrounds may maintain a few spots for overnighters and tents, but the majority of their customers prefer to park their RV in one place all summer, then come and go as they please. Campgrounds serve as base camp for summering seniors without buying a waterfront home. The Johnsons initially looked for a cottage on the lake. With retirement approaching and kids and grandkids in the area, they figured it would be convenient for family visits. But after considering the cost of fixing up a second home, Paula recollected, “We said ‘Forget it. We don’t need all that work.’ ” Ed’s sister had a motor home for sale, so they bought it, then rented a space by the month at Pic-A-Spot, now JT’s Lakeside Campground, on Little Barbee Lake. The Johnsons liked the arrangement so well that when they learned they could economize by booking a campsite for the whole season, they did — installing on it a park model, a type of RV that resembles a tiny house.
