Seasonal camping — reserving an RV spot for the entire season, April 15 to Oct. 15 — is a growing trend.

Locally, it’s already the norm. Campgrounds may maintain a few spots for overnighters and tents, but the majority of their customers prefer to park their RV in one place all summer, then come and go as they please.

Campgrounds serve as base camp for summering seniors without buying a waterfront home.

The Johnsons initially looked for a cottage on the lake. With retirement approaching and kids and grandkids in the area, they figured it would be convenient for family visits. But after considering the cost of fixing up a second home, Paula recollected, “We said ‘Forget it. We don’t need all that work.’ ” Ed’s sister had a motor home for sale, so they bought it, then rented a space by the month at Pic-A-Spot, now JT’s Lakeside Campground, on Little Barbee Lake.

The Johnsons liked the arrangement so well that when they learned they could economize by booking a campsite for the whole season, they did — installing on it a park model, a type of RV that resembles a tiny house. It’s their home base for the summer, while a small towable unit lets them fulfill their retirement dream of camping around the country.

Rosa gets Wa-Nee students on the bus %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Every summer, while students are enjoying their vacations, Wa-Nee Community Schools’ Director of Safety and Transportation Amy Rosa is working out the best way to get them to school the following year.

“We look at efficiency, ridership, route paths … we take everybody off the route, re-register them and complete a computer audit of the entire corporation,” she explained.

Among the biggest changes are the transitions: Kindergarten to elementary school, fifth grade to middle school and eighth grade into high school.

“We try to keep all the routes under an hour,” she said. Rosa also tries to find places to save money for taxpayers. But she must also balance efficiency with safety; for example, stuffing buses full of as many students as possible is not always the answer. Seventy is the most children a bus can hold; however, Rosa stated, “I like to route no more than 50.”

Most buses have seating charts as well, especially longer routes, Rosa explained.

“A lot of factors go into seat assignments … they change throughout the year.” Children are usually assigned seats in accordance with when they exit the bus. But, of course, behavior is also a factor.

As well as anyone, Rosa

understands the responsibilities of a bus driver. She was a driver herself and she becomes effusive when she talks about it. “Driving bus is the most favorite job I ever had.” Bus drivers, Rosa noted, are the “first smile kids see in the morning and the last goodbye in the afternoon.”

She started in 1996, after working in the main Elkhart branch of what is now Chase Bank. “I was that mom who needed a schedule closer to my kids’ schedules.” She also worked with special needs children and then became assistant transportation director until the 2006-07 school year, when she became director, a position she has held for 16 school years.

All drivers start as substitutes and the corporation provides training to get the required CDL license. Taking care of kids is always a challenge, let alone when you are driving a 15-ton vehicle, dealing with construction and distractions and maintaining 360 degree view. “You are a traffic signal,” she observed.

And the most important time is when kids are entering or exiting the bus.

When it comes to behavior, Rosa praised the “incredible support” drivers receive from principals. “There is a lot of connection with the buildings.”

There is also a live-view camera system on board.

Additionally, there is a focus

around safety and support of the drivers at Wa-Nee schools.

Children learn a mantra: “Your driver needs to be looking forward and driving.”

This culture of safety is also supported by the Indiana Department of Education, which, through its School Safety Specialist Academy, is a national leader in the preparation of individuals responsible for safety and security plans for all of the state’s traditional public schools.

Along with the principals, Rosa works with two school resource officers, Nappanee Police and mental health counselors to maintain a safe environment. The schools also offers Rape Aggression Defense Training, all-girl self-defense classes, anti-bullying training and distracted driving programs.

Rosa said she has “very few pastimes.” However, with her work, husband, five children, two grandchildren and one dog, she has plenty to keep her busy.

over are four to five times more likely to be admitted to a skilled nursing facility for at least one year as the result of a fall.

Seniors can reduce their risk of falling through regular physical activity. Exercise improves our ability to perform the tasks of daily living, which allows us to maintain mobility and independence. Improving strength through exercise also increases bone density and reduces the risk of injury due to falls.

Many seniors are not involved in enough physical activity. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, only 30% of Americans ages 4564 exercise routinely and only 32% of those age 65 and over claimed to exercise regularly.

How can we improve these

numbers? Remember, exercising doesn’t have to be a chore.

When searching for an exercise program, consider the activities you enjoy most.

Walking is an excellent form of exercise and doesn’t require a membership to a gym or expensive equipment. Simply lace up your shoes and get moving!

Walking provides lower extremity weight bearing exercise while also improving your cardiovascular system. The key is to start out slow, perhaps only 10 minutes per day, three to four days a week, and steadily increase your workout until you reach a minimum of 30 minutes per day, three to four days a week.

Dancing can be a fun way to get into the groove of working out. You can even enlist a Continued on page 3

Having proper advance planning helps protect assets There are unique opportunities for married couples when it comes to protecting assets from nursing %\ &/,))25' home spend - 5,&( downs. If (OGHU /DZ advance $WWRUQH\ planning is *UDQJHU done with an experienced attorney in the field of Medicaid law, the assets of the first spouse to die can be placed in a special type of trust, which has sometimes been referred to as a safe harbor trust.

The technical term is an irrevocable testamentary special needs trust. Assets passing to provide for the care of the surviving spouse in this way can be fully protected from nursing home spend downs. They are available for care and needs during the lifetime of the surviving spouse. They may also be better protected from death taxes and probate fees when they pass to the children at the time the surviving spouse passes away.

Think about the implications of this — with proper advanced planning, a married couple can shelter forever hundreds of thousands of dollars of assets from the effects of long-term catastrophic illness.

Other techniques, notably the Medicaid asset protection trust, can be available not only to married couples, but also to single persons.

This type of proactive planning is extremely valuable and offers an incredible return on investment.

Do you have a long-term care policy? The average person age 65 will have to pay almost $2,940 per year for long-term nursing care coverage. For married couples, that is almost $6,000 per year. If each lives to life expectancy and there are no increases in premiums, that total payout could exceed $120,000 or more. Many clients either cannot afford such an

investment or they are not eligible at all because of medical conditions. For perhaps 1/ 10th or 1/20th of that amount, estate planning and Medicaid plan-

ning can give substantial protection not available through any other means.

Alzheimer’s Caregiver Resource Fair Aug. 10 It’s estimated that 5.5 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

It’s projected that the number of additional Americans living with these diagnoses will triple over the next 30 years. Currently, Indiana estimates that there are over 10,000 members of the Elkhart community falling into these statistics. That is 10,000 of your friends, neighbors and church families.

Yoga is a terrific activity that improves flexibility, strength and balance. There are many fun and informative DVDs available, and many YMCAs or local fitness centers offer senior yoga classes.

Swimming and water walking are other great exercises that provide a low-impact workout and enhance strength and flexibility while improving cardiovascular health.

Before beginning a new exercise routine or activity, be sure to ask your doctor if it is safe for you to perform. The goal is to remain healthy and prevent falls, after all. And whatever you choose to do, start slow, grab a partner and have fun.

Seniors warm to working from home %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV A major cultural change emerging as the COVID shutdown slowly opens up is that both employers and employees have seen the benefits of working from home.

Almost three-quarters of the workforce that held their jobs during the pandemic maintained their positions by telecommuting from home. The bulk of these employees reportedly are 50 years of age and older and enjoy avoiding com-

muter traffic as well as unstructured work schedules.

Companies scrambled to provide these workers with computers, cyberspace links and remote connections so staffers could maintain their level of production, report progress and problems, and attend meetings seamlessly.

Some 60% of these workers vote to remain on the job at home and corporations see the economy in downsizing office space as well as moving it from expensive downtown high-rises.

Roesner shows homebound veterans ‘We Care’ %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Since Jan. 1, Sue Roesner, Lake City Place community relations manager, has been organizing We Care, an initiative, which finds Lake City Place and Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Indiana partnering with several other organizations and individuals to bring comfort and safety checks to homebound veterans throughout Kosciusko County.

“Kosciusko County has the highest amount of veterans in Indiana,” Roesner explained.

There are also a lot of great programs, she added, helping with those veterans. However, Roesner’s job brings her to many homes to discuss assisted living, and she had long discerned, she commented, “A lot of vets are homebound.” Moreover,

Helen and Joe Huffman of South Whitley weren’t thinking about retirement when they first hauled their family camper to Ponderosa Campground in North Webster in 1971. They just wanted a place for weekend getaways and fishing.

“We bought this little trailer and started driving around,” Helen recalled with a chuckle.

“We pulled in because they had a sign that said, ‘Free firewood.

Heated pool.’ I said, ‘This is the place for us!’ ” It sure was. The Huffmans invested in a seasonal site, which became a big part of their family memories. Their children would even end up marrying people they met while camping.

Joe has passed, but Helen, 93, still spends April through October in the motor home they installed on a shady hill. She still enjoys a dip in the camp pool.

The children all know her as Grandma Helen and that she has board games at the ready, should they drop by.

Her permanent residence may be a convenient 17 miles away, but camping will always be a welcome change of pace.

“We moved onto a senior street in Columbia City, but everybody pretty much stays in. It’s real quiet,” Helen observed. “But I come up here and it’s livelier.

There’s all ages.”

That’s what she loves about camping, she said: “It’s friends and getting together and meeting new people. I’ve met a lot of wonderful people here.”

Anne Ritenour of North Manchester has been camping since childhood, so when she and her husband retired, transitioning to a seasonal stay at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Pierceton came easily. In fact, she divulged with a twinkle, “That was my condition for buying a family camper.”

many had been affected by COVID-19, which had a negative impact on their regular care.

So Roesner took notice when she learned of We Care, which was first started at Whitlock Place in Crawfordsville as a program for shut-in seniors, though without the focus on vets. She then reached out to Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Indiana and other partners, such as Liberty Sewing Circle — known for the quilts they regularly present to veterans — and visiting American Legions to gather names of shut-in veterans. She soon gathered a list of around 25 names, the bulk of which were provided by the Syracuse American Legion Post.

On June 18, Roesner and a group of volunteers met at Kosciusko Senior Center in Warsaw to pack bags for the veterans, including reading materials and

“We can mow the yard in 10 minutes. I can clean my house from top to bottom in half an hour,” she beamed. “Then I do whatever I like! It’s easy. It’s fun.

And there isn’t a dull moment.

This year I decided to come work in the camp store and meet even more people.”

Others favor a quiet getaway and find camaraderie along the way.

Bill and Vicky Vance of Elkhart, and Swede and Pam Barbknecht of Valparaiso, chose Hoffman Lake Campground for its leisurely pace and quietude.

She had no intention of being a camper, Vicky confesses. But Bill insisted she’d like it if she gave it a try, so she went along, skeptically. After a couple visits, she caught herself daydreaming about the next trip. She was hooked.

The Vances have had a seasonal site at Hoffman Lake for 18 years. Since they retired, Vicky said, “Bill and I come out here April 15 and don’t leave until they close in October.”

“It’s peaceful,” said Bill. “We’ve been to a lot of campgrounds, a lot of state parks, but this little campground is where we love to be. This is our camping family.”

What do they do with their camp friends? Swede grinned.

“Lots of fishing. Lots of eating.

Some boating. Pool and lake swimming. More eating. That’s our catch phrase for our group: ‘Till we eat again!’ ” While the men fish, Vicky and Pam enjoy playing games. Or, says Pam brightly, “Shopping! I always like shopping.”

To seniors contemplating a camping lifestyle, Bill said, “Camping’s not for everybody.

But you’ve got to at least try it.”

Vicky nodded, laughing. “I tried it and look what happened.”

Ever since she was a young person, Roesner has had an affinity for older people. For 10 years she has worked in senior living and she has worked with Lake City Place since 2015.

A mother of five children, Roesner earned a master’s degree in organizational leadership and became an adjunct professor at Grace University.

But she did not find the work fulfilling and she sought employment at Peabody Retirement Community in North Manchester, where she found her calling.

“I admire them,” she said of the seniors she works with.

In addition to her work with seniors, Roesner is a member of North Manchester Rotary Club.

She has also been a past president of the North Manchester Chamber of Commerce and a member of the steering committee for Leadership Development Wabash County. She is also

involved with the CARE ministry at Olive Branch Church in Roann.

But these days, she is particularly excited about the We Care initiative. “We work together for our seniors,” she stated, adding, “To care for those who once fought for our freedom is one of the highest honors.”

Jim Swanson: sports ‘from both sides now’ %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU With apologies to Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins, Jim Swanson has been involved in sports “from both sides now.”

The 59-year-old athlete now oversees “a multitude of adult, children and developmental leagues” in a variety of sports as chief executive officer of the Kosciusko County YMCA. He played Division III baseball and basketball for his alma mater, Grace College, and still plays softball for Winona Lake Grace Brethren in a church league at the City-County Athletic Complex west of Warsaw. He has played in the league since the early 1990s. “I played in Pierceton for a few years when I moved here from Detroit, before they built the CCAC in 1994,” he said.

“It’s getting harder every year. They put you at first base when you get old,” he quipped.

“My goal in playing is just to be with the men and the young leaders. I know many of them as students from Grace College,” where, as an adjunct

professor, he currently teaches undergraduate psychology and masters courses in nonprofit management and higher education. He is also a licensed mental health counselor and an adjunct professor at Huntington University, teaching MBA and masters in counseling classes.

“Softball is a great fellowship time for me and it’s great to hang out with the young men because you are passing on a heritage.”

That heritage extends to his three children, all of whom were recruited by Grace College to play varsity sports.

His sons, John and Tim, now graduated, played basketball.

Daughter Katie is a junior at Grace and plays volleyball.

Swanson, who earned his Ph.D. in higher education in 2006, touted the benefits of sports. “You can instill a health and wellness lifestyle and character building. You learn to compete within the rules and boundaries and to take control when necessary. You learn the value of leadership. Hopefully that transfers into a life of character and integrity. And it

keeps your mind sharp, no matter what your age.”

As CEO of the YMCA, Swanson has, in his overview of the sports programs, seen “a lot of seniors” play pickleball, lunchtime basketball and fitness programs.

Soon seniors and others will be able to participate in fitness regimens from their homes.

“We are in the process of rolling out a pretty robust online presence with videos by trainers because of a K21 grant. We are super grateful to them.”

Swanson feels it is important for the public to participate in the YMCA’s activities, either in person or online, because of “the community health and wellness those leagues and programs offer.”

Swanson and his wife, Patti, have been married since 1987.

“We’re a big sports family and enjoy watching sports together and playing when the opportunity is there.” He also enjoys reading. “As an educator I especially love reading research on counseling and keeping up with current events.”

Swanson started at Grace as dean of students in 1994

and served as vice president of student affairs from 2007 until his retirement in 2016.

He began his position as CEO at the YMCA on Jan. 30, 2017.

“This is the most talented office I have been around,” he said of the YMCA staff. “They are passionate about this mission.”

One of Swanson’s hobbies is collecting vinyl records, espe-

cially bands from the 1970s.

“I’m a big Eagles fan,” he said, adding he has about 380 records in his collection. “I attend weekend record shows once in a while.”

There are three planning documents that you need to have in place in case something happens that renders you unable to make your own health care decisions. These documents are: Health Care Power of Attorney; HIPAA authorization; and Living Will.

A ‘Strange’ way to make big money Have you ever heard of musician Billy Strange?

Born William Everett Strange in 1930 in Long Beach, Calif., he %\ 5$1'$/ became an in & +,// demand session guitarist/arranger in Hollywood and recorded with such top drawer artists as Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, Cher and Nancy Sinatra.

One afternoon in the early ‘60s, Strange received a huge royalty check for a throwaway ditty he had created previously on a whim. He felt certain that a mistake had been made and called the issuing office. That’s when he was told, “Mr. Strange, the money is all yours.”

His quirky tale began at an all-night Hollywood diner, where he and a musician pal gulped black coffee in attempts to become sober enough to drive home. Eventually, they climbed into their car and cautiously motored off. Fighting to stay awake, Strange twirled the car radio dial for a while before settling on a local country station that was playing a tune that he detested.

“Man, I can write a song better than that in five minutes,” he boasted with a slur. That’s when his equally inebriated companion slapped a $100 bill on the seat between them and said, “Okay, Billy, you’re on!”

With a chortle, Strange reached into the car’s back seat for a blank score pad, which he used to sketch out arrangements for his session-musician work. He quickly came up with a catchy song that he laughingly dubbed “Monotonous Melody.” He then sang it, tossed the pad back and — unchallenged — stuck the money into his pocket.

A few weeks later, Strange found himself at work in a recording studio. A friend there, a music composer named Basil “Buzz” Adlam, had just started a small-time music company and announced that he was on the lookout for some fresh material to record. “Buzz, you know, I might have one,” Strange responded half-seriously as he recalled his silly “Monotonous Melody” tune.

Strange and some other session pals tried a few different tempos and styles before settling

The grave robbers of Christiana Creek %\ 3$6725 *5(* /$:621 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU All my life I lived and was raised on Grandpa’s farm and our family home Dad built on the south edge of Grandpa’s farm. I also built my house on the north edge of Grandpa’s farm in later years after he passed away.

This farm was special as most of my life I grew up on Christiana Creek that ran and flowed through the farm, where I learned to fish, swim and appreciate nature to its fullest, all that including a deep appreciation for the Native Americans who once lived on our property.

Grandpa, while I was in my teenage years, found numerous artifacts of prior Native Americans who once lived on the

farmland. In my early pre-teen years, I discovered numerous arrowheads in the empty lot next door to our home on the south side of Grandpa’s farm.

Later in my life, I discovered that there was once Native American burial mounds about 1 1/2 miles north of the farm where several lakes joined each other and flowed into the creek. “Cass County Archaeological Sites” records reveal that there were at least a dozen mounds used for burials. These burial mounds were about a half mile north of what is now Adamsville Road and Michigan’s US 12.

At “site No. 41, Sec. 1” of Ontwa Township, we find the mounds called “Christiana Mounds.” The next entry states “Site No. 42, Sec. 12” and “6 burial mounds excavated in 1899.” The next and last entry

reveals “Site No. 43, Sec. 12” in Ontwa Township as “7 burial mounds excavated in 1937.”

The “grave robbers” had now looted and destroyed our Native American brothers’ graves and final resting places.

The sites of these mounds are currently occupied by modernday homes of white people who most likely have no knowledge of the sacred land upon which they now live.

My own research has been futile in trying to get information on these mounds, which is known to exist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. Whatever happened to the looted items and possibly the skeletons is not known to this writer. It is also not known who the “grave robbers” were insofar as government agencies, archaeologists from the university or other persons.

State officials warn of scam Attorney General Todd Rokita is partnering with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development to warn Hoosiers about a phishing scam involving unemployment benefits. Scammers are sending text messages asking Hoosiers to verify their identity by clicking on a link. Clicking the link may give scammers access to your personal data.

“We appreciate the opportunity to partner with state agencies to encourage Hoosiers to be vigilant in protecting their personal information,” Rokita said. “Scammers are always coming up with new ways to try to steal your identity and your money.

If you receive a text message asking to verify your eligibility for unemployment benefits, I urge you to delete the message and file a report both with my office and the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.”

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development will never send a text message to verify your eligibility for unemployment benefits.

“The fact that scammers are now contacting Hoosiers directly via text message shows just how far they will go in their attempts to steal personal information,” Department of Workforce Development Commissioner Fred Payne said. “DWD has many prevention and detection tools in place to thwart as much fraudulent activity as possible, but individuals still should take the necessary steps to protect their personal information.”

Jim Heierman: Looking through Jesus’ eyes, loving with Jesus’ heart %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU Jim Heierman’s countenance is invariably joyful and inviting — for good reason.

“My most heartfelt ministry is that I love to look at Jesus’ family with eyes like he has and love the people in the way he loves me,” he said. “I have always loved Jesus. He has always been most important in my life.”

Retired from a career in banking, marketing and management, Heierman now invests his heart and soul in the lives of campers, staff and volunteers at Quaker Haven Camp, where he works as office manager.

Though he uses his analytic skills to “organize and streamline processes to benefit the bottom line” of the camp, what really flames his soul is “serving as a ‘camp pa,’ ” he said.

“I love observing the kids who come in scared, who don’t seem to fit in, walking and sitting by themselves, and being a grandpa to them, building a relationship and putting an arm around them, making them feel loved and wanted, so they feel comfortable and fall in love with Jesus. Then they can become part of the camp and have a wonderful experience.”

Heierman describes himself as a “noticer,” a reference to the

2011 book by Andy Andrews, “The Noticer: Sometimes, All a Person Needs is a Little Perspective.”

He notices “others’ hurts and pains for the purpose of caring for them and showing love and understanding,” he said, remarking that a simple smile can profoundly change people’s lives. “I discovered 30 years ago we each have the power to be an influence on others by just making eye contact and smiling. It makes their day better and that makes your day better.”

He puts his convictions in practice everywhere he goes. “I love more than anything else to notice somebody doing something right and walking over and saying, ‘You’re doing a great job.’ Just a word like that sparks them to up their game and I love being able to spark others.”

Heierman said he grew up in a “Christ-centered home” where the family held devotions, sang songs and prayed every night.

“We would crawl into our parents’ arms and listen to stories from ‘Little Visits with God.’ One night my little sister prayed for the gophers my brother and I would remove from the cemetery for five cents each. Her prayer must have worked because we hardly caught any,” he chuckled.

After he went into the pastorate he baptized me in Stanton Lake on a November morning. I shivered like crazy, but it was a very memorable moment.”

Heierman and his wife, Bev, have attended Dewart Lake Friends Church for six years. He is a member of the ministry and oversight committee, the denomination’s equivalent of elder and serves as the church’s treasurer.

He leads an adult Bible class.

“I’m not a teacher,” he said. “I’m more a facilitator.”

He has been involved with Gideons International for the past six years.

In his spare time, Heierman loves to canoe. He is currently at the 205-mile mark in his quest to canoe the Wabash River from its source south of Fort Recovery, Ohio, to the Ohio River in Old Shawneetown, Ill., a 505 mile trip.

“All you ever need is complete if you are in Christ. That doesn’t mean life will be easy, but it will be meaningful and complete.”

Traveling Smithsonian Water/Ways exhibit in North Webster %\ 1257+ :(%67(5 38%/,& /,%5$5< Lakes are an important part of life in northern Indiana.

The lakes provide recreation, beauty, a means of income for many and an abundance of wildlife, as well as drawing thousands of visitors to the area each year.

Because the lakes are so central to our lives, North Webster Community Public Library, in partnership with The Watershed Foundation, is proud to host a traveling Smithsonian exhibit called Water/Ways.

This museum-quality, interactive exhibit will be on display inside the library from now through Aug. 7. It examines the role water plays in our lives environmentally, culturally and historically. In addition, two local companion exhibits will highlight our local area’s unique water story and history.

In conjunction with the exhibit, a series of public educational programs for adults and families will be offered that exam-

ines water’s impact on our lives and local environment. A list of these programs is available at www.nweb.lib.in.us/waterways/ or www.watershedfoundation.org/waterways/.

The Water/Ways exhibit is part of the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street, a collaboration that partners with state humanities councils to bring quality exhibits and programs to rural communities. North Webster is the first stop on the exhibit’s six community tour through Indiana.

“We are proud to offer this Water/Ways exhibit to our community and surrounding neighbors and give them the opportunity to experience a Smithsonian quality exhibit close to home,” stated Beth Smith, adult services director for North Webster Community Public Library.

Sometimes, though, such a usually ordinary event can prove life-changing.

Near the end of 1970, musicians Bill Danoff and his girlfriend/future wife Taffy Nivert motored along a picturesque two-lane Maryland highway called Clopper Road. To pass the time, they batted about some lyrics that they felt might fit into a melancholy ode for Johnny Cash. When they got to “almost heaven,” Bill injected the word Massachusetts, which is where he was from. And while Massachusetts did contain

four syllables — what Danoff wanted — he thought the state’s name somehow wasn’t “musical” enough. Back home in Washington, D. C., that night, he and Nivert chose a better-flowing four-syllable state name: West Virginia.

It was a place neither had ever been.

On Dec. 29, 1970, the 163seat Cellar Door music club in the Georgetown area of Washington, D. C., offered two relatively unknown acts onstage that evening — Bill and Taffy (who performed as Fat City) and a struggling folkie friend named John Denver. His lone claim to music world fame had been his creation “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” which had become a chart-topping single for Peter, Paul and Mary but had left Denver’s name unknown to most music fans.

After Fat City and Denver had finished their Cellar Door sets that night, they agreed to rendezvous at Bill and Taffy’s place for an impromptu jam.

Later, at one point, Nivert said to her partner, “Get out that song you’re writing for Johnny Cash.” Danoff did as he was told and showed Denver the tune that, at the time, consisted only of one chorus and one verse. But Denver was bowled over by what he heard and asked to have first crack at recording it. The three worked throughout the night, Denver adding the bridge and more words of wistful nostalgia. By dawn, they pronounced the future classic finished.

When the applause died down, he told the audience, “We just finished a brand new song and I haven’t even learned the words yet.” He then unfolded a sheet of paper and taped it below the mic head. Danoff joined Denver onstage, along with Denver’s lead guitarist and his bass player, and the foursome launched into the first public performance of “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”

The audience rose collectively for a thunderous five-minute standing ovation when the tune ended. That verified to Denver what he had felt since the night before, when he had first heard the unfinished song: this one — for sure — is a winner.

One month later, Denver recorded it as an RCA Victor single, with his Fat City friends providing backup. Upon release, the radio-friendly 45 rocketed to No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and finally gave Denver the breakout hit he had spent years searching for.

Greencroft Goshen Community Center has so many programs to offer and any senior is welcome to take part, whether you live on the Greencroft Goshen campus or not. Monthly, we go on several trips to various places, some local and some are out of state.

We still have room on our trip to Lancaster and Philadelphia, Pa., in October.

We always have various classes you can attend and many of them are free. Classes include: Nutrition by Purdue Extension, ID Theft and Budgeting by Lake City Bank, and ongoing health classes by Goshen Health.

Starting in August, we will again be offering Lifelong Learning Classes through a

study cooperative with Goshen College. The Jennings Orchestra is always looking for new musicians and, starting in the fall, the Evergreen Singers will be recruiting for new members.

Greencroft Goshen also sponsors the Elkhart County 4–H Fair Senior Talent Competition, which will be held on July 27. This is always a great event with talent from all over Elkhart County.

If you are looking to stay active, we have six different exercise classes you can take part in. If you enjoy the outdoors, a new Bocce ball group has recently formed and we are looking to start a new pickleball group in an indoor court as soon as we have enough people signed up.

Get WalkIN’ provides support for Hoosiers’ health %\ 385'8( (;7(16,21 After Clayton resident Melissa Phillips had back surgery several years ago, her doctor suggested walking to maintain her health. Phillips signed up for Get WalkIN,’ a Purdue Extension program that provides free informational and motivational emails.

The program has been a source of support for Phillips, who walks between 15 and 75 minutes daily year-round.

“Walking keeps the muscles in my back stronger and I also feel so much better when I walk,” she said. “The emails encouraged me to keep going.”

“Get WalkIN’ is a great example of putting faculty research into practice to improve individuals’ health and wellbeing,” said Stephanie Woodcox, assistant program leader for Purdue Extension in the College of Health and Human Sciences.

active and to have a workout schedule that was consistent,” she said.

Extension educators in counties across Indiana have offered Get WalkIN’ since 2016, but the program proved especially valuable this year as walkers sought structure and inspiration when gyms and parks closed due to COVID-19.

Get WalkIN’ was presented 26 times during the 2019–2020 programming year, reaching 682 individuals.

From peanuts to a pagoda: roaming through Reading %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Like prime real estate, Reading, Pennsylvania’s major attractions are location, location, location.

Reading forged its place in history as an industrial center and a major player in the formation of this nation: a source of the Conestoga wagons that played a vital role in the drive to develop the West.

Its geographic position on the shoulder of Mount Penn on the banks of the Schuylkill River is an hour’s drive or less from the fecund and food-filled Lancaster County, capital of Amish country; the glitter and gourmet seafood of Atlantic City and the New Jersey shore; the historic sites of Valley Forge and Gettysburg; and Independence Hall, the cradle of our constitution in Philadelphia.

This manufacturing city designed in 1748 by William Penn’s sons, Thomas and Richard, is to outlet shopping what Bethlehem is to Christendom. It brags that it’s the Outlet Capital of the World, citing the opening

of its first manufacturer’s outlet surplus shop more than half a century ago.

“America’s Oldest Brewery” is just up the road in Pottsville, the boyhood home of author John O’Hara. Here the Yuengling family has been fermenting barley and hops at the foot of the Appalachian Trail since 1829.

Brewery tours are offered without charge year-round. The free samples that follow are especially welcome on hot summer days.

On the other side of Reading is one of several haunted houses peppered throughout the Schuylkill Valley. Brinton Lodge on a leafy riverbank boasts an economically exquisite menu as well as a handful of friendly phantasms.

This cozy complex opened in the early 1700s as a food stop for muleskinners hauling barges along the Schuylkill River canal system. It is still home to the ghosts of at least one of the owners, an owner’s mistress, a Revolutionary War soldier and a young girl who died of a respiratory ailment.

“We’ve had waitresses who’ve seen these ghosts and think they’re customers,” we were told.

A network of riverside walking and bicycle trails links the heart of this city of 80,000 with the countryside and much of its history. Donald Linderman, a nearby resident pedaling with a local group through a covered bridge leading to a former wagon works transformed into a museum, informed the group why there are no windows on covered bridges.

“They were built to get horse-drawn wagons across the river and horses get skittish when they see anything moving under them. There are no windows so horses wouldn’t see the water rushing under them.”

After that lesson, it was time for a stop at downtown’s best known watering hole and power-lunch stop: Jimmie Kramer’s Peanut Bar. It’s on Penn Street across from the city’s daily newspaper, the Reading Eagle.

First-timers tend to shuck peanut shells back into the bowl on their table. “Throw ’em on the floor!” sang out our server.

Remote monitoring brings medical care into the home %\ *26+(1 +20( &$5( It seems like everything is going remote these days — learning, shopping, social gatherings. Even health care is delivered remotely in some cases.

Remote patient monitoring gives you and your health care team a way to check up on your health every day — all from the comfort of your own home.

It’s like a bridge between your home and your doctor’s office.

You can use simple medical technology and devices to send important information about your health to your provider daily without leaving home.

The service is designed specifically for patients with chronic conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

“We use remote monitoring to teach patients about their diseases in a more meaningful way,” said Ryan Yoder, RN, telehealth nurse at Goshen Health.

Yoder works closely with Goshen Home Care and Hospice to give patients the information they need to take care of themselves and stay out of the emergency room or hospital. The service also helps doctors make decisions about treatment in a timely way.

Here’s how RPM services work: When you first enroll in the program, you receive a kit with a tablet computer that has a health monitoring program already installed on it. The mobile device connects wirelessly to a blood pressure cuff, finger probe and weight scale that are included in the kit.

You use the devices to measure your daily vital signs, such as blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen levels in the blood. Your tablet automatically relays the information to your care team using cellular data.

The ongoing monitoring means your doctor can recognize changes in your health early, even before you notice

Free activities planned at Goshen Health community garden A bushelful of fun is planned for volunteers who help plant, weed and harvest produce at the Goshen Health community garden this summer.

tion sessions are available for volunteer groups on Saturday mornings to learn about gardening, harvest cycles and healthy food preparation.

Monthly drawings give volunteers a chance to win a gardening gift basket from June through August. Volunteers simply scan a QR code on the Go Garden Goshen! banner at the garden and submit a photo or comment about their visit to enter the drawing.

During harvest times, gardeners can take home free fresh produce or volunteer to deliver boxed vegetables and fruits to food pantry partners in the community.

Leisure and travel industry rebounding in Indiana Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch and the Indiana Destination Development Corporation are releasing a survey on the impact of COVID-19 on the leisure and travel-related industry.

IDDC commissioned Rockport Analytics to conduct a series of surveys, intending to help inform both industry stakeholders and state leaders on current business and consumer confidence. The first five surveys were administered online in weekly waves from May 5 to June 5, 2020. Then, Rockport Analytics completed two additional surveys, one in the last week of November 2020 and one in late April/early May of 2021.

“The data shows that Hoosier confidence is rising,” said Crouch. “The consumer sentiment study shows that Indiana residents are ready to return to leisure and travel-related activities.”

Indiana Consumer Sentiment – Hoosiers feel comfortable immediately or within 30 days doing the following activities compared to six months ago:

• 68% eat at a restaurant vs.

43%.

• 64% visit outdoor attractions or parks vs. 39%.

• 56% take a vacation by car vs. 31%.

• 52% stay at a hotel vs. 21%.

• 44% visit indoor attractions vs. 23%.

“The insights from these

surveys have been an essential resource,” said Elaine Bedel, secretary and CEO of IDDC. “The research shows that the leisure and travel-related industry is rebounding.”

Rockport Analytics has constructed an index based on several components: mortality rate, lost jobs and unemployment

claims, lost revenue and company viability, consumer activities and multiple tourism variables (hotel and travel disruption, overlaying with consumer sentiment).

Key findings of the study include: • As of June 14, 2020, Indiana’s Leisure and Travel-Related index (LTR index) was at 66.0,

which is 34% below normal rates.

• May 2021 registered gains in all components, pushing the LTR index up.

• As of May 23, 2021, the LTR index stands at 79.0.

Responses of those surveyed came from 90 counties, representing all ages and key demographics.

Some good old advice on life I just received my 304th copy of the AARP Bulletin.

This publication has arrived in my mailbox every month since ,1 $ I turned 50.

1876+(// I never read %\ ',&. the Bulletin :2/)6,( when I was in my 50s because I resented being seen as a senior in those days. Now I’m in my 70s and, quite frankly, I still don’t want anyone telling me how to eat healthy, boost my brain power, sleep well, soothe my gut or improve my memory, or how to choose the best walk-in tub and chair lift.

In the May issue, I glanced at the lead article: “60 Ways To Live Longer, Stronger, Better.”

Here are some of the actual entries, with a few snide comments by me, added in parentheses: Make your bed every morning.

According to a survey by the National Sleep Foundation, people who make their bed every morning sleep better. (I told Mary Ellen that I was willing to let her make the bed from now on. She told me it isn’t who makes the bed, it’s the fact the bed is made.

I was hoping to get away with that.)

Change your sheets every Sunday. People who change their sheets every Sunday are less likely to develop allergies that disrupt sleep. (No wonder I can’t sleep. We always change sheets on Saturday.)

Take a do not disturb break.

Close your eyes for five minutes and don’t open them for anyone.

(I tried that this past Friday just before I heard the Amazon delivery truck pull up. I raced outside to get my new headphones and collided with my mailbox.)

Store fruit in the front of the fridge. You will be more apt to eat a healthy snack that way. (Great idea, but now I’ve stepped on the quart of blueberries that scattered all over the kitchen floor when I jammed my arm to the back of the fridge to reach the Oscar Mayer bologna.)

Do the dishwasher boogie. Do what you hate and turn it into a party. For example, dance in front of the dishwasher as you load it. This will remind you both how much fun you can have together. (Mary Ellen and I waltzed around the recycling bin after we rolled it to the curb Sunday night. The neighbors all laughed at us because they knew that pickup wasn’t until next week.)

Choose fragrance-free products. (For Mother’s Day, I bought Mary Ellen a fragrance-free

perfume. Did she ever wear it?

I’ll never know.)

Bring plants into your home.

Plants make you feel relaxed and free of stress. (Wait a second, aren’t those plants illegal in Indiana?)

Take time to appreciate your partner’s skin. (I thought that sounded very romantic. Then AARP added, “Be on the lookout

for moles.” Well, that kind of ruined the mood.)

Once a week, try to learn something new. (I did this over the last month and now I have four new things I’m lousy at.)

Decorate healthfully. If you generally keep chocolates on the cocktail table, hide them. (AARP is assuming if you are old enough to get their AARP Bulletin, you

won’t remember where you hid them.)

Finally, do an hourly posture check. Sit or stand tall with your feet flat on the floor. Look straight ahead, bringing your shoulders back and slightly tuck in your chin. (Then take a selfie.

But trust me, it won’t matter.

You’ll still look 30 years older than you really are.)

Council on Aging appoints Sharon Hirstein to board of directors The Council on Aging of Elkhart County recently appointed a new member to its board of directors.

“We are excited to welcome Sharon Hirstein, a very talented individual, to our board as we take our organization to the next level to meet the needs of the growing senior population in Elkhart County,” said CoA CEO David Toney. “Mrs. Hirstein’s extensive experience in business and community service, along with her passion for serving seniors, will be instrumental in our success meeting the growing need.”

Hirstein is the owner of Elkhart Audiology Rehab LLC. She is a board certified audiologist and has owned and operated her business for the last 11 years.

Before being elected to the board, she provided support to CoA through food drives, office

She is passionate about helping people optimize and protect their hearing abilities throughout their lifetime. She has continued her education with additional coursework for hearing issues related to diabetes, cognition, tinnitus and ethical practice.

The Council on Aging of Elkhart County is on the frontline to advocate for senior citizens. The nonprofit’s mission is to support senior citizens living at home for as long as they are able to stay safe and healthy. The council provides transportation, in-home assistance and life-enriching opportunities for Elkhart County seniors.

Vietnam Memorial Wall finds permanent home in Fort Wayne Fort Wayne has a new attraction that will be of interest to Vietnam War veterans, their relatives and friends and particularly to

those who had service men or women who made the ultimate sacrifice during that conflict.

It was completed in mid-May and dedicated Memorial Day weekend. The wall is located on the grounds of the Veteran’s National Memorial Shrine and Museum on O’Day Road at the northwest edge of the city.

Names of those service men and women who died during the war are listed starting in the middle of the wall on the tallest panels by the date they died and going down to the smallest panels at the south end. They restart on the small panels at the north end and go toward the middle with those who died at the end of the war listed in the panel next to those who died at the beginning of the war.

Two podiums on the 8-foot wide walkway in front of the monument contain lists of all 58,320 service men and women who lost their lives in the war.

The list tells exactly where to locate any particular veteran on the wall. Signs along the walkway also advise visitors how

to use their cell phones to find a name. Among those who died are 1,534 from Indiana and 79 from Allen County, where the monument is situated. Docents are available to help visitors locate their veteran and grief counselors are also available.

Atmosphere at the wall is solemn, respectful and often very emotional. People can be seen on hands and knees tracing a name with paper and pencil, while others are searching intently for a name. Urns of flowers have been left all along the walkway.

The wall is the latest permanent addition to the VNMSM. In addition, it has a small museum which is scheduled to be replaced with a much bigger facility. Its collection includes uniforms, weapons and memorabilia from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Civil War. Also the American Indian Wars, the Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, Vietnam War and the conflicts in the Gulf and Middle East.

One of the exhibits is a 40 foot by 8 foot box car that was donated to the state of Indiana by the French after World War I. The box car, which is very rare, was originally designed to carry 40 men and eight horses.

Busy summer schedule supporting community %\ 68( &5(,*+721 $OWUXVD ,QWHUQDWLRQDO RI :DUVDZ Members of Altrusa International of Warsaw, a local international, nonprofit service club founded nearly 50 years ago, find themselves busy through the summer months serving the Kosciusko County area. They assist their Lincoln Elementary Adopt-a-Class teacher prepare for the new school year and assist by collecting ballots annually at the KREMC annual meeting.

Members also participate in Make A Difference Day. In 2020, they partnered with Gateway Education Center and provided bags of snacks for the students as they celebrated accomplishments.

Their biggest service project is Bingo for Beaman Home and all proceeds from this event benefit the programs and services of the shelter for domestic violence victims they founded in 1985. Members also support the Beaman Home by handling the registration for Beaman’s annual golf outing in early June and by various other volunteer activities throughout the year. Members are already busy preparing for the 2021 Bingo for Beaman Home to take place Thursday evening, October 21, at Winona Heritage Room in Winona Lake.

Literacy is a major focus of Altrusa International and the local club recently donated $500 to each of Warsaw’s nine elementary schools for use in their literacy-related needs. This $4,500 donation was the largest the club has made. Members also partner with and volunteer to assist Kosciusko Literacy Services among many other local projects.

Kim Strnad of Fort Wayne packed an Allen County Senior Life on her trip to the London Bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

In an attempt to bring more tourists and retirees to Lake Havasu City, the governor in the 1960s, Robert P. McCulloch, purchased the original London Bridge which spanned over the River Thames in England. Built in the 1930s, the bridge was deteriorating and not sound enough for increasing levels of traffic.

The bridge was then cut apart into 10,276 granite blocks, numbered and transported to its new home. From there, workers reconstructed and reinforced the bridge on land on the edge of a peninsula brandishing Lake Havasu to the north and the Colorado River to the west and south. Subsequently, the land was intentionally flooded under the bridge, creating Pittsburgh Point, essentially a new island.

Prospective buyers were attracted to the transformed area.

The $2.46 million purchase price of the bridge, was well reimbursed by the influx of new homeowners.

Lake Havasu City also received ornate bridge lampposts, included in the sale, fashioned from melted-down cannons, in which the British confiscated from Napoleon in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. These remarkable lampposts still line the bridge today.

The historic, and possibly haunted, bridge is the second largest tourist attraction in Arizona, next to the Grand Canyon. A tortilla is the base of the wrap which comes in wheat, corn, spinach, tomato basil, along with many other varieties. You can leave it at room temperature or heat it up.

Next spread with mayonnaise, mustard, hummus or my new favorite — cauliflower/white bean hummus.

Then start adding your vegetables either scattered or in

ribbons across the tortilla. Some choices that work well are: • Lettuce.

• Spinach.

• Carrots.

• Cucumbers.

• Corn.

• Tomatoes.

• Peppers.

• Red Cabbage.

• Red Onion.

• Blanched asparagus.

• Sprouts.

• Radishes.

And if you like, add some seeds such as pumpkin or ground flax and maybe black beans for extra protein. Then gently rolled up the wrap and serve. I would not add raw mushrooms, though. Dr. Andrew Weil advises, in agreement with other experts, that mushrooms must be cooked. “Mushrooms have very tough cell walls and are essentially indigestible if you don’t cook them. trients they contain, including protein, B vitamins and minerals, as well as a wide range of novel compounds not found in other foods.

Many people choose to eat raw until dinner and the summer makes it especially easy to accomplish this. You could change this wrap up daily and practically feel the nutrients enter your body. But whether raw or grilled, these wraps are a quick and easy way to get a few servings into your day and that is never a bad plan. Enjoy.
