Elizabeth MacDonald is living her best life, and that’s saying something, considering the life she’s lived so far. Flight attendant, TV reporter, talk show host and news anchor are just a few of the jobs she’s tackled to date, not to mention high school English teacher and published author. Each title represents a unique adventure.

Take flight attendant, for example. After graduating from college with a degree in secondary education, MacDonald decided she needed to discover life experiences that just weren’t possible in Fort Wayne. An airline was hiring flight attendants, offering the option of a home base in San Francisco. With zero hesitation, MacDonald took the job. “I got off the call,” she said, “looked at the phone receiver and thought, ‘What just happened?’ ” What happened was an experience that was to define each of her future careers: a full immersion in the position, in this case resulting in a promotion to a management position in her 11-year stint with the airline, during which she attended graduate school. Next came a job in broadcasting. “I was living my dream,” she said. A move back to Fort Wayne and a chance conversation with a local school district superintendent landed her in a new gig as a school administrator and later as an English teacher at South Side High School.

In each of her adventures, the written and spoken word were paramount.

Habitat for Humanity’s grants manager loves helping people %\ 52' .,1* )HDWXUH :ULWHU “Believe it or not,” said Staci Mathias, grants manager for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne, “a lot of people have misconceptions about what the organization does and how it works. Some think we give houses away for free and one individual asked if we shelter animals.

“I explain that prospective homeowners put in a lot of hours working on their homes and those of other recipients.

Habitat gives qualified applicants the opportunity to

become owners through sweat equity and courses on a variety of home ownership aspects. In other words, they earn it.

“My job is to raise the funds to purchase the materials to construct affordable housing in Allen, Huntington and Wells counties. Over the past 35 years Habitat has provided sustainable home ownership to more than 253 families. In fact, the Christian housing ministry’s primary focus is to unite volunteers and local investors with qualified families to provide affordable home ownership.”

Mathias said there are three specific fundraising areas she focuses on: • Government funding, like the city of Fort Wayne, which has provided a block grant for historical Kinsmoor property and HUD funds for two homes on Drexel Avenue. Indiana Housing Authority has earmarked $40,000 for a Habitat home in Huntington that will be completed in December.

• Foundations, a significant source of funds. Among those

supporting the program are the English Bonter Mitchell Foundation, the Mary Cross Tippmann Foundation and AEP Foundation.

• Corporations like Lincoln Financial and other area companies.

Grant writing has been a gradual on-the-job experience for Mathias. The experience she got working for 14 1/2 years in the University of Saint Francis department of education was helpful when she became grants manager 3 1/2 years ago. It required researching and studying the grant application process by watching online videos. “Precisely wording applications, being careful to include necessary information and being cognizant of the organizations’ specific requirements took time, but the learning curve was not too steep. Some organizations only fund construction, others strictly cover sponsorships and some support our general operating budget.”

Aging & In-Home Services of Northeast Indiana receives grant Aging & In-Home Services of Northeast Indiana is pleased to announce they have been selected by the Administration for Community Living to receive an award for the 2021 Alzheimer’s Disease Programs Initiative Grants to States and Communities program.

The project period for the grant is Sept. 1, 2021, through August 31, 2024. AIHS was one of ten awardees. The collective award amount was $9,232,408 and AIHS received $1,000,000.

The three-year cooperative agreement award will support and promote the development and expansion of dementia-capable home- and community-based service systems that improve quality of life for people living with Alzheimer’s and related dementia and their caregivers. Fifty percent of each grant will provide direct services to help individuals living with dementia and their caregivers remain independent and safe in their communities.

This program supports services designed to address the identified needs in the communities they serve. This grant will dedicate efforts toward a broad range of people, including those with the most social and economic need, people with ADRD who live alone, those living with ADRD in tribal communities and people living

Finding fulfillment through helping others %\ '(%25$+ & *(5%(56 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Dr. Monique LevesqueHartle grew up on a farm in Canada and moved to the U.S. in 1990 to attend chiropractic college in Minneapolis. In addition to helping her chiropractic patients, Dr. Levesque-Hartle is also active with St. Joseph Missions Women’s Shelter, a local nonprofit organization providing homeless women a place where they can feel physically and emotionally safe to begin their journey back to living their lives.

Following a calling close to her own heart, Dr. LevesqueHartle began working with St. Joseph Missions after feeding the homeless in Fort Wayne with Catholics on a Mission and strived to do more for those most in need in the community.

“I found myself extremely committed to the causes and I took over as president of St. Joseph Missions in October 2018,” she said.

Dr. Levesque-Hartle finds fulfillment in both her professional career and her work with the mission. “It is unbelievable to see the changes these women make in their lives,” she said. “When they first come to us, they are, of course, because of their histories, very hesitant to trust — and you can tell they’ve been in some bad situations.

In the beginning, the women are very guarded, and it’s just amazing to see the transformation when they finally realize they have a safe place to sleep and three meals a day. They realize we truly want to help them, and they just blossom as people.”

“To me, I felt the need to help these people because it really can happen to any of us at any time. I was also raised

to help those in need. Those who have should help those who don’t.”

Accordingly, Dr. LevesqueHartle sees Mother Teresa as her role model. “She taught us to help anyone, regardless who they are.”

What to do in the fall

%\ 5,&.< ' .(0(5< )HDWXUH :ULWHU A favorite topic for famous garden writers and speakers is “Fall Cleanup” or “Fall Gardening Tasks,” since there really isn’t anything else to discuss once the fever and obsession of gardening in the spring is long gone.

How many times have we over-planted or over-planned with unbridled enthusiasm in April, only to give up in July when we are totally exhausted?

Anyway, if you are hitting your gardening second wind, here are some things to do — especially since warm weather is persisting this year.

• Compost your leaves, leave

them in the yard or use them as mulch around trees and shrubs.

• Fertilize your lawn with a fertilizer with a higher first number on the bag in late October or early November.

• Plant trees and shrubs, as long as the warmer weather persists.

• Mow the lawn until we receive a hard freeze or frost, and mow the lawn a bit shorter the last mowing to prevent any possible snow mold.

• Wait to cut back perennials until daytime temps are reliably in the lower 40s, or wait until early March of next year – to reduce insect and disease pressure.

see if any bagworm “cones” are on the plants. The overwintering bagworm nests look like small cones attached to the branches. Use a pair of scissors to cut them off and destroy them.

• Prune shrubs and trees that do not flower in the spring.

• Mulch strawberries and tender roses when daytime temps are reliably in the 20s.

• Consider ordering seed or plants early this season because of potential supply chain issues and delays in the regular mail.

Fall color may be a bit of a downer this extended fall season. Windy days and frequent rains also negatively affect fall color. “Prepare yourself for disappointment.” That is my motto.

‘Peace Train’ brought a message of hope Cat Stevens Remember Cat Stevens?

He came to prominence here in the early 70s as a singersongwriter responsible $ %RRPHU %ODVW 7R 7KH 3DVW for such %\ 5$1'$/ ethereal & +,// ballads as “Peace Train,” “Wild World,” “Moon Shadow” and “Morning Has Broken.”

He was equally popular in his home country of England at the same time, but to his British fans he was probably more like Cat Stevens 2.0, a rocker revamped from the turbulent late 60s.

“Peace Train” was Ste-

vens’s third entrée into the 1971 American Top Ten, the song being gleaned from his million-selling album, “Teaser and the Firecat.” Arriving at a time of social upheaval (especially concerning the unpopular Vietnam conflict), “Peace Train” brought a message of hope and encouragement to his followers.

Infused with a Greekinfluenced calypso beat and powered by handclaps, violins and a gospel-tinged chorus, Cat’s hit offered an escape from the country’s malaise and a welcome to a world of tranquility and contentment via a metaphorical train ride.

Who wouldn’t want to be on such a conveyance?

Born Steven Demetre Georgiou in 1948 in London, the youngest child of a Greek father and a Swedish mother, he developed a love of music

and took to playing the family’s grand piano. But at 15, intoxicated by the success of the Beatles, he switched to the guitar and started creating tunes.

Stevens set his heart on becoming a songwriter in the same vein as Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. He signed a publishing deal at 17 with a London music company and cut several original demos (demonstration records), including the future Tremeloes hit, “Here Comes My Baby,” along with “The First Cut is the Deepest,” recorded later

by Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow. He changed his stage name to Cat Stevens, in part because a girlfriend claimed he had eyes like a cat. Also, he has said, he couldn’t imagine anyone going into a record store to ask for a Steven Demetre Georgiou album.

Never a standout student, Stevens later dropped out of art college to become a velvetsuit-wearing teen idol who placed three rock singles high on the British record charts.

What followed for him was a schedule of personal appearances, recording sessions and an indulgence in the seductive (and often destructive) world of the rock star.

He contracted tuberculosis and landed in a London hospital for a yearlong recuperation. While taking stock of his life during that time, Stevens meditated, did yoga, became a vegetarian and considered different spiritual paths.

During his recovery, he composed numerous songs in an easygoing folk-pop style, his new works more intimate than the hard-edged rockers that had first brought him fame in the UK. “In the old

days, I was more concerned with melody,” Stevens said later. “Now it’s what I have to say.”

“Peace Train” became a fan favorite, and for a while Stevens ended every concert with his beloved (and still relevant) anthem, which opened with unabated optimism: “Now I’ve been happy lately/Thinking about the good things to come “And I believe it could be/ Something good has begun.”

Mark Souder: a baseball cheating expert — in the good sense %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU Mark Souder knows how to cheat at baseball.

More accurately, he knows how others cheat at baseball.

Plying his tandem lifelong hobbies of “politics and sports, especially baseball,” he joined the Society of American Baseball Researchers “many years” ago and played a pivotal role in the 2005 Congressional steroid hearings during his tenure as a U.S. Representative from 1995 to 2010.

An avid devotee of baseball history, Souder has published several books and numerous articles on the subject, has presented to the 19th Century SABR baseball symposium in Cooperstown “multiple times” and has given a George Mather Lecture Series presentation at the History Center in Fort Wayne about the game’s professional origins.

According to Souder, the Grand Old Game and big city politics have always been joined at the hip. “Basically organized baseball was created by politicians in Washington and New York, as well as Cincinnati, Boston, Chicago and all the earliest cities way back in the 19th century.”

Also an inseparable element of the national pastime: cheating. “Cheating began when baseball began. It is that simple,” he said. “Betting was an original part of the game. And when there is a motive to win, people try to cut corners.”

Professional baseball began in 1871 and on-field play

was conducted in accordance with a consensus of gentlemanly and upright conduct.

At least, it was supposed to.

“An honor code didn’t work at all,” said Souder. So umpires were brought in to ensure the game was conducted according to Hoyle. Umpires, however, “are also susceptible to bribes.”

Souder recounted the shady but profitable antics of the Troy Haymakers, so called because “they’d visit a town chewing some hay in their mouths, pretending not to be very good. They’d lose, and then place even bigger bets with locals for the second game. They would make out like bandits, which they were.”

Drug issues were relative latecomers in vitiating America’s national pastime. “Steroids were not the problem, but everything else was,” said Souder. “They doctored the baseballs; changed baselines; tripped runners; skipped bases when umpires weren’t looking; spiked opponents, trying to force them to leave the game with injuries; and did every other illegal thing they could think of.”

The signal disgrace of early 20th century baseball was the Black Sox Scandal, when eight players from the Chicago White Sox were banned from baseball for allegedly throwing the 1919 World Series for an anticipated payoff by gamblers.

The players’ iniquitous behavior subsided somewhat when women won the right to vote in 1920 and became more involved in political life, which included attending

baseball games.

Souder said, “It is not absolutely clear when steroids first began to be used.

Ken Caminiti was the first prominent player to raise warning flags on steroid abuse after he won the 1996 MVP award.” Others issued warnings “but almost no one listened.” Hence the need for the Congressional hearings, which captured national attention. “We began with some parents who lost their sons to steroid and drug abuse.”

“Steroids is likely largely a thing of the past,” said Souder, but new technologically-enabled challenges are on the horizon, such as “athletes trying to modify genes to gain advantages.”

“Baseball, like everything else, must be internally regulated and if they do not they are subject to potential regulation. Hopefully, the need to intervene will be rare,” Souder concluded.

Souder was born in Fort Wayne and grew up in Grabill, helping with the namesake family business that operated from 1907 until it was sold this year.

He and his wife, Diane, have three grown children: daughter Brooke, an elementary school teacher for Southwest Allen schools; elder son Nathan, a National Park Service employee and superintendent of the Colorado National Monument in Grand Junction; and younger son Zach, a graduate of Hillsdale College and Trine University who serves as a federal investigations agent for Homeland Security.

VA encourages breast cancer screening for women veterans The VA Northern Indiana Health Care System is encouraging women veterans to get screened for breast cancer during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women and is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. Localized breast cancer has a 99% survival rate if detected early.

“VANIHCS encourages all women veterans to speak with their health care providers about breast health and get checked and treated for breast cancer,” said Michael Hershman, director. “We recognize

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and throughout the year, VANIHCS offers high quality women’s health care, including breast care services. VA leads the nation’s health care systems in providing mammograms to those who need them. Every VA medical center has a Women Veterans Program Manager to ensure women veterans have access to appropriate care and treatment.

Breast care resources available through VA include screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasound and MRI, genetic counseling and testing, cancer treatment and more. VA recommends regular breast cancer screening for women 45 years and older, though some women may choose to start screening with yearly mammograms as early as age 40. Women should talk with their VA primary care provider team about what is best for them and schedule their mammogram.

Dr. Hile named District II superintendent of the year Dr. Daniel Hile, superintendent of Smith-Green Community Schools in Churubusco, has been chosen by members of the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents as the District II Superintendent of the Year for 2022.

District II includes Allen, DeKalb, Elkhart, Huntington, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, St. Joseph and Whitley counties and portions of LaPorte County.

Winners are selected by other superintendents in their

district who evaluate candidates for their leadership, communications, professionalism and community involvement.

Hile has been superintendent of Smith-Green Community Schools since 2017 after serving the district as a teacher, assistant principal and principal.

staff was in decline. District leaders decided the only course forward was to ask the community to vote for a referendum to authorize additional operating funds. Hile spent the first year of his superintendency engaging with the community to share facts about the district’s finances and gain support for returning the district to financial solvency.

Following multiple “town hall style” community meetings and fact-gathering sessions, many hours of outreach and communication and the development of a shared vision for the future, the community ultimately approved the referendum. Although the approved referendum allows the district to use an additional tax rate of up to $0.628, the district used a rate of $0.33 for the first two years and $.0294 in the current year, easing the burden on taxpayers. The referendum funding was used to increase needed and required professional development to better prepare teachers to meet students’ needs. The district also improved salaries and benefits to improve staff retention

and morale. The additional funding allowed the district to restore its cash balances to ensure the district is financially sound and prepared for possible emergencies. With the financial future of the school corporation secured, the district was then able to shift its focus to transforming schools to meet the academic, social and emotional needs of its students.

As a result of the conversations and feedback received through the referendum process and other experiences, Hile remains committed to ongoing communication and transparency with the community, in all areas. The district developed a financial transparency dashboard on its website, allowing community members to review financial data and see how the district spends the various funds it receives. Additionally, the school corporation uses a variety of communication strategies to keep families informed, including frequent videos to address important topics and share timely updates.

Hile is a passionate advocate for public education and is actively involved with local,

state and national leaders. He has met with various legislators and testified at the Indiana Statehouse on a variety of topics and has traveled to Washington, D.C. to advocate for the children of Indiana.

This advocacy has taken on a new urgency and importance during the ongoing pandemic, as unique stresses and needs have developed for not only students, but for school staff and families as well.

Hile graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree in music education and earned his master’s degree in education administration from Indiana University-Fort Wayne and his Ph.D. in educational leadership from Purdue University.

Hile is a member of the Purdue University Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Advisory Board and chairs the Upper Wabash Valley Superintendent Study Council. He is also a governing board member of the American Association of School Administrators and serves on the executive board for the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents.

Whether you will benefit from utilizing this exemption depends on your assets, but for most, at least those with assets under $11.7 million, gifting $15,000 annually does not result in a tax reduction.

The federal government imposes taxes on gifts made during your lifetime and/or at death that exceed certain dollar amounts. The current lifetime exemption for 2021 is $11.7 million per person.

This means you have the ability to gift a total of $11.7 million ($23.4 million per married couple) during your lifetime or at death before incurring a federal estate tax. Amounts gifted over the $15,000 annual exemption during your life act to reduce the $11.7 million total available to you at death. For example, if you were to gift an individual $20,000 in one year ($5000 over the annual exemption limit), your available lifetime exemption would be reduced by $5,000. Because the current lifetime

Embassy to host 37th annual Festival of Trees The Festival of Trees is one of the region’s most anticipated holiday traditions and the Embassy Theatre is excited to formally announce that it will host the 37th annual Festival of Trees from Wednesday, Nov. 24, through Wednesday, Dec, 1.

Lobbies of the Embassy Theatre and Indiana Hotel will transform into a wonderland of decorated trees under the theme of “The Magic of the Season.”

Patrons will tour the spectacular venue to view 65 decorated trees. Admission includes visits with Santa (various dates and time) and festive entertainment on stage, including the Grande Page pipe organ, as well as youth choir and dance performances.

The organization will again offer a virtual ticketing option to share with friends, coworkers and family who cannot attend in

person or to provide the perfect holiday backdrop to play on televisions at holiday celebrations.

Breakfast with Santa is a popular featured event and will take place Friday through Sunday of the Festival. Cost for the breakfast will be $30 per person (reservation required, very limited seating).

One memorized the ID characteristics unique to a particular plant, then looked at the plants out in the field. Tests were a nightmare. Nowadays, all it takes is a cell phone with an application — so when one takes a picture of a plant, the app will tell you what it is.

I am not sure if any real learning takes place when one doesn’t really have to know the characteristics of a plant to know what

The PlantSnap creators claim that at this time, their app can identify over 625,000 plants, trees and mushrooms. All I can say is the app better be 100% correct on mushroom ID or bad things could happen.

Google Lens Basically, with Google Lens you can search and identify anything you see — animal, object or plant. If you are one who uses the plant identification apps only to find the name of specific flowers, trees or weeds, Google Lens is all you need.

PictureThis PictureThis is one of the most popular mobile apps for identifying plants from a photo on Google Play. According to the information displayed on the app’s description page, PictureThis is capable of distinguishing 10,000+ species of plants with an accuracy of 98%. The free subscription contains ads and only a limited number of free shots (IDs). You can, however, earn more free IDs by watching an ad, sharing the app with your friends, accessing the app daily to claim your free IDs or playing “feeling lucky,” which is like a spin-to-win game.

Skirting the issue of the miniskirts Miniskirts were not born, as many of us believe, during the UK youthquake (as it was called) of the frenzied $ %RRPHU %ODVW ’60s.

7R 7KH 3DVW Over the %\ 5$1'$/ years, ar& +,// cheologists have unearthed short-skirted European figurines created between 5400 and 4700 BC. Some ancient Egyptian frescos have depicted female acrobats wearing them, as well. During the 20th century, the “flapper” era saw entertainer Josephine Baker shock Parisian audiences with a miniskirt made of bananas when she performed in the Folies Bergere.

Fifties’ sci-fi movies such as “Flight to Mars” and “Forbidden Planet” also featured the controversial clothing. A decade later, Mexico City fashionistas were wearing skirts that stopped far above the knee.

Modern cultural historians, though, have given British fashion designer Mary Quant much of the credit for this worldwide clothing revolution.

Since 1955, she and husband Alexander Plunkett Greene had operated Bazaar, an up-

scale boutique in the Chelsea area of London. (Bazaar was one of only two such shops there that catered to the young). Quant initially offered the short dresses to allow wearers to run for city buses more quickly.

The term miniskirt was derived from Quant’s favorite British car, the popular Mini Cooper. (In 1988, Quant designed the interior of a limited-edition Mini. Of the 2,000 built, each featured black-and-white-striped seats with red trimming, red seatbelts and Quant’s signature on the driver’s and passenger’s seats. These rare vehicles have now become coveted collector’s items for certain nostalgia buffs).

By the ’60s, Chelsea was emerging as a place of beatnik joints, cellar music clubs and fashion shops. Young women who shopped there became known as Chelsea girls, and Quant was more than happy to outfit them in ribbed poor-boy sweaters, fishnet gloves, patterned stockings and, due to increasing demand, coquettish miniskirts that measured up to 10 inches above the knee.

Quant’s skirts were often worn with flat Mary Janes or zip-up knee-high boots and thick, brightly colored tights.

Thanks to such fashion icons

as Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton, miniskirts quickly captured the zeitgeist of ultra-hip London during the Beatle era, and before long the fashion trend surfed the slipstream of the British Invasion to seemingly become mandatory dress for ladies worldwide for years thereafter.

To its wearers, the miniskirt wasn’t only “groovy,” it also showed support for female liberation — something long overdue in the hearts of many.

Women’s movement pioneers such as Gloria Steinem and Marlo Thomas tacitly endorsed the skirts when they made public appearances in them.

The short-dress trend lasted throughout the remainder of the decade, thanks in part to Goldie Hawn. She prolonged the fashion fad as a pop-culture phenomenon on TV’s “Laugh-In,” with young women often embracing Hawn’s signature skirts.

The fashion world is ever changing, of course, and by the end of the ’60s hemlines fell to the ankles in a style dubbed the “maxi,” with skirt lengths becoming the longest since World War I. No problem for Quant, though; by then, she had created another fashion rage: short shorts. Or, as they came to be known, “hot pants.”

Turnstone brings rock steady boxing to Fort Wayne Rock Steady Boxing, an adaptive exercise program for people with Parkinson’s disease, utilizes training based on professional boxing programs.

This unique training experience will now be available at Turnstone Center, 3320 N. Clinton St., Fort Wayne, one of only two locations in the Fort Wayne area.

The program involves regular exercises, such as stretching, bicycling, running, jump roping, pushups, balancing and lots of non-contact boxing, led by experienced trainers and coaches. Rock Steady Boxing classes welcome both men and women of all ages and levels of ability.

Rock Steady Boxing Inc., a nonprofit organization, was founded in Indianapolis. At their location headquarters, participation has steadily increased from just six participants to over 155 affiliate organization members today and includes men and women ranging in age from 35 to 90.

Classes are geared to people at all stages of Parkinson’s disease. Multiple volunteers contribute their time and talents to assist with the classes.

The Rock Steady Boxing Method was developed in Indianapolis over the course of seven years. In 2012 the training was launched to share the Rock Steady Boxing Method with other people

who are fighting back against Parkinson’s. Today there are over 700 Rock Steady Boxing affiliate programs around the world, with classes being led by certified Rock Steady Boxing “Coaches.”

“We have always believed in the Rock Steady Boxing Method,” said the organization’s Executive Director Joyce Johnson. “When evidence began to emerge that our program had a very positive impact on the boxers, our mission became clear — to share our knowledge and experience with all people with Parkinson’s. That is why we decided to make our training available worldwide — to train as many as we can, so together we can improve the care of people with Parkinson’s everywhere.”

“We are fortunate to be able to bring this program to our Fort Wayne community,” said Zach Lothamer, a certified Rock Steady Boxing coach at Turnstone. “Non-contact boxing is a great form of exercise for anyone but has been proven to help slow the progression for Parkinson’s disease-related symptoms.”

Putting his faith into action through prayer, music and service %\ 9,1&( /$%$5%(5$ )HDWXUH :ULWHU For as long as he can remember, daily devotional prayer and attending worship services on Sunday have been a part of Dan Schult’s long life. Born 87 years ago in Merrill, Wis., he has a brother, Dave, residing in Fort Wayne, and two sisters, Diane and Carolyn, living near Seattle.

“Right after supper,” Schult said, “my parents would lead us in Portals of Prayer for about 10 minutes.” Circulated since 1937 by Concordia Publishing House, each devotion includes a Bible reading, meditation and prayer applying to daily life. Schult still continues the devotional practice every evening.

Schult attended Trinity Lutheran School in Merrill where he began playing the trumpet around sixth grade, he recalled. Following high school, he elected to attend Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, Ill. (now Concordia University-Chicago) where he played in the wind symphony and earned a BA degree in religious education.

“I answered a calling to the teaching ministry at Bethlehem Lutheran School, Fort Wayne,” Schult said, “to serve as teacher and beginning band director.” He had about two months to become familiar with other instruments in a band besides

trumpet, such as clarinet, flute, trombone, etc. His hurried preparations were sufficient enough to keep him there 41 years, leading an ensemble of nearly 80 kids daily for 38 of those years.

During that time, he met his wife, Janice. This past summer they observed their 63rd wedding anniversary.

They have three sons, 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild. All three sons followed closely in their dad’s footsteps. Phil plays trumpet and teaches music in Fairmount, Minn., Paul is a minister in Redwood City, Calif. and played the clarinet, and Michael taught for a year, played French horn and is a physical therapist in Seymour.

Retiring from teaching music didn’t discourage Schult from performing it.

He, along with his brother and several students, joined an eight-man chorus at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. They performed for holiday services and on other special occasions as well as at other Lutheran churches, Lutheran Life Villages facilities, worship services at Franke Park and for other occasions. Schult and his brother also ran a band camp and helped each other with other projects.

A former pastor, the Rev. Tom Eggold, living in Schult’s neighborhood, encouraged him to take a bereavement course. “After completing it, for nine years

I would visit with someone who had lost a loved one in death, providing some comfort but mainly listening,” Schult said.

Four years ago, the Schults joined St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. He’s participated on a praise team for two years, playing flugelhorn, a brass instrument that resembles the trumpet. With the late George Ogg on guitar, Schult visited grade schools twice a month, playing hymns and leading them in worship.

In his “spare time,” for 20 years Schult drove dealer cars to various Midwest locations, which helped keep his driving skills sharp, he related. He also enjoys fly fishing at a couple of “secret” ponds and daily rides a bike he bought at age 86.

Beginning in 2003, Schult experienced serious health concerns for five years, involving surgeries and continuing follow-up recovery. “I didn’t even have the energy to pray except prior to my surgeries when I asked the doctor to pray with me,” he said. “But God carried me.”

to the rumor that COVID-19 inoculators are really shooting microscopic computer chips into your bodies so the government can track your movements. They don’t have to, because your computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones are doorways into your daily lives.

Hackers can move into your existence and walk off with your identity. Then they can wipe you out financially.

Almost half — 47% — of the population reported some form of identity theft last year. The amount stolen totaled more than $710 billion. This involved primarily what is defined as application fraud — criminals use your identity to open a new account or take over your existing account, including insurance policies and rewards accounts with merchants, airlines and hotels.

That’s why you should review your financial picture and change your passwords regularly, as well as watch

for unfamiliar transactions or transfers.

There are other ways crooks can make use of your identity — giving police your name when pulled over for a traffic stop, for instance.

The instant you suspect someone has stolen your identity, the Federal Trade Commission recommends you report identity theft with them first and take that report to the police so they can open a police investigation.

Get a copy of the police report and make copies of both it and the FTC report to show lenders, banks and credit card issuers.

Besides changing all your passwords, including those used to control the appliances in your high-tech home, have your bank change your account numbers and get yourself new credit cards.

If you’re fortunate enough to spot the theft early, many credit card issuers will wipe the debt if it’s not too large.

Let’s be clear: added sugar is the enemy

We have talked before about added sugar, and how much is too much, but it bears a recap.

The FDA fails to buck the sugar industry with more than a “choose carbohydrates wisely” warning, but the American Heart Association does have guidelines, so let’s take a quick look at those.

Under the AHA’s sugar guidelines, children under age 2 should have no added sugar, and most American women and kids over age 2 should consume no more than 100 calories per day from added sugars, with the maximum for most American men being 150 daily calories. That means one can of soda could take us over the top for the entire day. One hundred sugar calories is 25 grams, or 6 teaspoons and for men it is 36 grams, or 9 teaspoons of added sugar.

On the food nutrition panel it will list Total Sugar and under that it will say “includes xx grams added sugar” and that is per serving, so make sure to check the listed serving size as they can be very sneaky on what they consider a serving size compared to what we would consider a serving size.

and fruit. Think about how many of these items you could add to a salad, or a nutrition bowl — both raw and cooked together.

As we near the end of fall, consider squash and homemade soups; you’ll want to keep these stocked up so you always have a go-to instead of turning to something processed. Plan to have whole or minimally

processed foods — proudly be the one at the table who orders salad or a veggie wrap instead of a cheeseburger and fries; in fact, be a leader and order first.

Be aware of these five common falsehoods about Alzheimer’s With National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month kicking off Nov. 1, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is providing information to dispel common falsehoods about Alzheimer’s disease to help individuals know the warning signs, understand the importance of early detection and learn how to be proactive about reducing their risk.

“Dispelling the misconceptions about Alzheimer’s disease is critically important, because they may cause people to ignore symptoms and delay taking action which impacts their health and quality of life,” said Charles J. Fuschillo Jr., AFA’s president and CEO. “National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month is the perfect time to reinforce factual information that can help someone spot the warning signs, get screened and be proactive about their brain health.”

Here are five common falsehoods about Alzheimer’s disease: • Alzheimer’s is just part of getting older. Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging — it is a progressive, degenerative brain disorder that impacts memory, thinking and language skills and the ability to carry out simple tasks. It differs from regular agerelated memory loss, such as oc-

casional forgetfulness. Persistent, progressively worsening memory issues that interfere with every day functions, such as routinely becoming disoriented in familiar places or forgetting familiar names and faces, are not “just part of old age,” they’re warning signs of a health problem.

• Alzheimer’s disease only affects senior citizens. While the majority of people who develop Alzheimer’s disease are over the age of 65, young-onset Alzheimer’s disease can affect people as young their 30s or 40s. Memory problems at any age should be checked out.

• Nothing can be done for Alzheimer’s disease. Although there is currently no cure or treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, people diagnosed with the disease can and often do, have meaningful, active lives. They can participate in activities they enjoyed prior to the onset of Alzheimer’s (making some adaptations) and therapeutic interventions can help improve one’s quality of life. Some medications can help manage the symptoms. The earlier Alzheimer’s is detected, the more significant the impact these interventions can have.

• You cannot reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

While there is no guaranteed way to prevent Alzheimer’s, lifestyle choices can help you reduce your risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease. Good diet, exercise, social interaction, learning new skills, proper sleep, limiting alcohol and quitting smoking are all things you can and should do to promote good brain health.

• All memory impairments are the result of Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s is a cause of memory loss, but not the only one-vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems, depression, sleep apnea, stress and urinary tract infections can all cause memory impairments.

Detecting the underlying cause is essential in order to take action. Memory screenings are an important first step in uncovering potential memory issues — they are quick, noninvasive and consist of a series of questions to gauge memory, language, thinking skills and other intellectual functions.

Out-of-the-ordinary is run-of-the-mill in Virginia %\ )<//,6 +2&.0$1 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV While barreling down a 90-degree embankment that slammed into a wall of mud and gravel-encased woods, my mind kept shouting, “You want me to go where?”

I was driving — or, more accurately, hanging on for dear life — to an all-terrain vehicle on what was described as a quiet tour of the Primland Hotel in Meadows of Dan, Va. I was reminded to take it easy on the turns as we heaved over rocks, dipped into ruts and stormed through muddy ravines. I had to keep reminding myself through the rushing adrenaline to relax my body, where none of my internal organs were where they were before we started out on

this ride.

During the hour-long excursion, I managed to toss a glance at an occasional wild turkey, pheasant or deer and catch a glimpse of the magnificent countryside. Somehow, I was disappointed we didn’t see any of the black bears that sometimes show up.

Even when we got out onto a real road, the driving still felt treacherous. Dramamine helps assuage those prone to motion sickness over the winding hills and curves carved through mammoth overlooks scattered around the 12,000-acre campus.

Primland is just shy of the size of Bermuda and a lot of driving is involved when you stay here. When you think you’ve arrived at Primland, you really haven’t. It’s six miles from the north gate to the lodge. It’s another seven miles to the south gate. Shuttles to the different activities felt like

activities in themselves.

We were happy to be on our own two feet for a hike with naturalist Tim, who embellished our walk with explanations of the diversified flora and fauna.

And then it was time for archery. Followed by airrifle shooting. And tomahawk throwing. Just like every hotel, right?

Channeling my inner Native American, I raised my bow and arrow and shot at the bulls eye.

Turns out I was a natural, hitting the target every time. Not so much with the air rifle. And my tomahawk throwing was a little rusty.

The list of things we didn’t do — fly fishing, clay shooting, disc golf, horseback riding, hunting, watersports, outdoor fitness track, and, of course, golf and tennis — was longer than those we did.

But I still felt I had earned my Signature Massage, con-

tinuing the Native American experience. Artifacts from the local Saura tribe abound and are considered sacred. Tribal elements of fire, water, air and earth are incorporated through hot stones, oils, scents and touch, followed by sipping tea from the Native American Tea Co. Before the massage, I was taken to a relaxation space through hallways decked in shades of turquoise and brown that represented a “drop of heaven” and anti-aging.

That night we went to the observatory for some stargazing. It was crystal clear and a very sophisticated telescope projected the stars onto a video in front of us. The full moon provided even more clarity.

All of Primland emphasizes a return to nature and we were surrounded by stars, planets, constellations and galaxies — including the Orion Nebula, a star-forming nebula approximately 1,300 light years from Earth — the Pleiades Open Star Cluster (also known as the Seven Sisters) and the showstopping Andromeda Galaxy (the closest and largest galaxy to the Milky Way, roughly 2.5 million light years away). We saw more than 1,000 stars on the screen, including the mere 150 visible to the naked eye.

There was so much to fathom. For instance, in 4 to 6 billion years, the Milky Way may collide with Andromeda.

But what’s to worry?

The mother of our nation %\ 720 02552: 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV A 16-year-old Native American who helped lead the first transcontinental expedition up the Missouri River to the Pacific coast to explore the so-called Louisiana Purchase of 1803 could arguably be called the mother of our nation.

The title First Woman of America has some traction because her image is one of only two females ever placed on U.S. currency.

She is the bilingual Sacajawea, born a Lemhi Shoshone in May 1788 in Idaho. She was 16 when she met and helped Capt. Meriwether Lewis and Lt. William Clark explore the far reaches of the Louisiana Territory in 1804-05.

Lewis and Clark’s 45-member Corps of Discovery arrived at a Mandan village in what today is North Dakota. Knowing they would need the help of Shoshone tribes who lived at the headwaters of the Missouri River, they hired fur trapper Toussaint Charbonneau as a guide after learning his wife, Sacajawea, spoke Shoshone. She was pregnant with her first child.

Lewis recorded the birth of her son Jean Baptiste Charbon-

neau on Feb. 11, 1805. By August of that year, the expedition had located a Shoshone tribe and were trading for horses when they discovered the tribe’s chief was Sacajawea’s brother.

When Lewis and Clark reached the Pacific Ocean, all members of the expedition, including Sacajawea and Clark’s black manservant, York, voted on the location for building their winter fort.

On the return trip, Sacajawea advised Clark to cross into the Yellowstone River basin at what is now known as Bozeman Pass. This was chosen later as the best route for the Northern Pacific Railway to cross the continental divide.

In 1809, Charbonneau and Sacajawea accepted Clark’s invitation to settle in St. Louis. In 1813, the couple entrusted Jean Baptiste’s education to Clark, who enrolled the young man in the St. Louis Academy boarding school.

Jean Baptiste shares the spotlight with his mother on the U.S. 2000 “golden dollar” coin.

On that coin, he’s the infant depicted on Sacajawea’s back.

Some historical documents suggest Sacajawea died in 1812 of an unknown sickness, but Native American oral histories

have her crossing the Great Plains after leaving her husband and marrying into a Comanche tribe. She was said to have returned to the Shoshone in 1860 in Wyoming.

In 1925, Dr. Charles Eastman, a Dakota Sioux physician, was hired by the Bureau of Indian Affairs to locate Sacajawea’s remains. He learned of a Shoshone woman at the Wind River Reservation with the Comanche name of Porivo.

Some of those he interviewed said she spoke of a long journey wherein she had helped white men. She possessed a silver Jefferson Peace Medal from the Lewis and Clark Expedition. A Comanche woman named Tacutine told Eastman that Porivo was her grandmother.

According to the interviews, Porivo lived for some time at Fort Bridger, Wyo., with her sons Bazil and Baptiste. Eventually, she returned to the Lemhi Shoshone at the Wind River Reservation where she was recorded as “Bazil’s mother.”

Porivo is believed to have died April 9, 1884.

Eastman concluded that Porivo was, indeed, Sacajawea.

On the basis of this claim a monument to “Sacajawea of the Shoshonis” was erected in 1963

While a dollar saved today may be inflation diminished in value tomorrow, it can still provide financial comfort that wouldn’t exist if you hadn’t saved it in the first place.

The corporate community long ago adopted an old military mantra that can be applied to several stages of life: Proper Planning Prevents PeePoor Performance.

A savings plan can improve your retirement performance.

All plans begin with a reality check. If you’re already saving for your senior years, a review of your situation is always in order.

It could be time to save, save and save some more until it hurts. This doesn’t mean you should make another error logged by many folks: “We’ll do our traveling when we get older and have time.”

Saving sensibly calls for simple small steps. For example, eat out twice a month instead of three or four times.

Toss those extra bucks into the senior years saving plan.

silver and you’re in your golden years, a hard look at your financial situation can identify any fraying of your financial security blanket.

During these complex COVID-19 times, it’s difficult to tell if you’ve been attacked by the original virus or a variant, or if you’ve contracted the flu, or if you have a cold.

If you and your doctor have narrowed down your event to the common cold, what do you take for it?

Home remedies abound.

Many oldsters may remember the mustard plaster: a poultice of mustard-seed

powder pressed between two towels and placed over the chest while you slept. It was supposed to sweat the ills out of your body and stop the cough accompanying your cold.

It’s still being used.

Also on the cure-yourself list is to totter off to bed with a box of tissue handy for blowing your nose. To help you sleep, a shot of brandy, straight or in a glass of warm water, is often recommended.

Staying hydrated has become more popular and so has gargling a warm saltwater solution to relieve a scratchy throat.

A worldwide cure for almost anything is a nice warm bowl of chicken soup.

Supporters of this remedy concede it may not always help, but it can’t hurt.

The array of cold remedies at your nearby pharmacy have been rated no better than what you can come up with at home.

For example, combining honey, lemon and ginger in a jigger of warm water is a tasty bit of relief. Adding a bit of whisky or rum doesn’t hurt.

Garlic in any form is regarded by many cultures as a hefty weapon against the common cold.

How can anyone resist the offer of a nice cup of warm tea while wrapped in a shawl and seated in a recliner beside a warm stove.

And, back to the beginning, getting rid of a cold takes nothing but rest and time.

Everything else you do is an effort to be comfortable.

Which makes the Bitcoin story totally bizarre. Not only is it understood by a select group of financial high flyers, no one is really sure who started it.

Since the Bitcoin’s birth a dozen years ago, it’s traveled a bumpy road that stretches from a price of $400 five years ago to more than $60,000 earlier this year. Along the way it dropped to $4,000 in 2019 from $19,000 two years earlier.

But not to worry, if Bitcoin sounds a bit scary, there are more than 6,500 other cryptocurrencies on the market.

None of these currencies in-

volve printing presses. They exist only in computers — cyberspace.

Like Bitcoin, you can’t store any of it under your mattress.

There is a growing industry servicing the spending of Bitcoins after you buy them.

They’re readily available at thousands of automated teller machines around the country.

The value of Bitcoin rises only if there’s a demand for it. If no one wants it, the value drops — dramatically.

If Bitcoin doesn’t catch your fancy, you can purchase Ethe-

reum, Litecoin, Stellar, Polkadot, Cardano and, as pointed out ear-

lier, thousands of other options.

And there’s a whole new language involved.

For example, Ethereum claims to be “a decentralized software

platform that enables smart contracts and decentralized applications (dapps) to be built and run without any downtime, fraud, control, or interference from a third party.

“The goal behind Ethereum is to create a decentralized suite of financial products that anyone in the world can freely access, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or faith.”

Did you get all that?

Transactions are conducted through a digital ledger called a blockchain. This involves a worldwide computer network that stores the virtual money in a digital wallet.

A lure of cryptocurrency is the

ability of blockchain to process and record software programs that facilitate global transactions almost instantaneously. It’s a way to transfer large sums of money around the world without an intermediary.

For example, it takes five days to transmit cross-border payments at an average fee of more than 6 percent, accounting for a $4 trillion business globally. Bitcoin cuts the transfer time down to about 10 minutes. Fees vary for the various currency forms. Some are no fee.

If you feel you understand the function of virtual currencies and see them as part of your financial future, make sure you understand the beginning, middle and end of what can happen to your money if you think you’d like to get involved and invest.

Yosemite’s scenic sights stagger the senses %\ )<//,6 +2&.0$1 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Walking around the trunk of my first giant sequoia in Yosemite National Park’s Mariposa Grove practically required a GPS. My head did not tilt back far enough to see the top.

Leaving noise and civilization behind to walk among these ancient trees brought us to the famous Grizzly Giant, the grove’s elder statesman that rivals the Statue of Liberty in height and sports a branch stretching outward that is larger than the trunk of most trees.

This was among the multitude of magnificent displays

by Mother Nature’s handiwork nurtured in this Rhode Island-sized park about four hours north of Los Angeles.

Driving along its hilly, winding roads overlooking the tree line is but a harbinger of the visual delights ahead. Unless you plan to spend days exploring the park from all four entry points, accept the fact you’re only going to see the merest fraction of it — 90% of visitors see only 3% of the park — but it will be enough to enthrall nonetheless.

And there are options right outside the park that beg to be noticed.

When you think of Yosemite, you might visualize dramatic overlooks, soaring mountains and rushing waterfalls, perhaps mining towns and giant sequoias, or even bountiful hiking trails and old historic villages. You probably don’t picture 15,000 fossils from 700,000 years ago or a collection of Ansel Adams photos or a slew of museums that are themselves small gems of mining, ranching, Native American and logging lifestyles.

That’s the yin and yang of Yosemite — the many things you visit the park to see and the lesser-known attractions you never expected sprinkled throughout Madera County.

A good beginning is the thrill of Glacier Point where dramatic multi-colored layers of massive rock formations reaching skyward are punctuated by occasional waterfalls breaking through the sepiatoned line of sight.

And there’s Yosemite Falls, at 2,425 feet one of the tallest in North America. The famous Half Dome dominates the landscape and, as trite as it sounds, it is one of the most spectacular creations of nature I’ve ever encountered.

The views are unending and can be observed from several angles, like mountainous cliffs that go on and

Give yourself time to recover a bit before approaching El Capitan, with its sheer cliffs hundreds of feet high that for some reason people actually choose to climb.

For a change of pace from ogling, and to give your neck a chance to realign itself, try the fun excursion on the 1928 Sugar Pine Railroad Midnight Special. Four miles of tracks take you through decades of history recounting the lumber industry and Gold Rush era that defined the area in the late 1800s.

They use one of the world’s largest narrow gauge Shay

locomotives still operational today. And you’ll be riding in open-air log flumes replicating the way sugar pine lumber was transported from the mountains down the rivers to their land-based destinations.

You’ll be reliving history while you get to eat a traditional lumberjack’s barbecue dinner — steak, hot dogs, succotash and baked beans — accompanied by some traditional lumberjack singa-longs under the very sugar pine trees responsible for the historic majesty.

Not a bad way to wrap up a visit to Yosemite National Park.

Big, powerful monsters displayed at Butler museum %\ 52' .,1* )HDWXUH :ULWHU They’re big … huge, in fact!

They’re powerful and colorful. They’re monsters … monster trucks, that is! And you *5($7 can view (6&$3(6 them and 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV learn all %\ 52' .,1* about the monster truck phenomenon at the Monster Truck Museum in Butler.

You may have seen monster trucks on television racing around a track, jumping over mounds of dirt and crashing down on a line of old cars. But when standing next to the fivefoot-six-inch-tall tires weighing 800 pounds and costing $2,000 to $5,000 each, one really can’t help but be impressed with their sheer size. The driver sits in a cab that’s almost as tall as the floor of a second story house and he has to get in by climbing up the massive treads on the tires.

The museum, which spent the first 10 years of its existence at the Kruse Plaza in Auburn, moved into the former Butler Eagles Lodge in late 2020 and held its grand opening in May. The seven rotating monsters in the collection, along with a few other special

You’ll be greeted at the entrance by Chris Allen, the museum curator/tour guide and monster truck walking encyclopedia. He’ll not only explain the history of monster trucks, starting with big off-road trucks fitted out with tires from farm fertilizer equipment crushing cars, to the three stages of weights from 16,000 pounds down to a more manageable 12,000 pounds, to the evolution of suspension systems and fourwheel steering.

According to Allen, the pinnacle of monster trucking

came in the 1990s. The advent of four-wheel steering allowed drivers to do wheelies, make tighter turns and do more free-styling moves, which made for much more exciting racing.

Television coverage brought the sport to a much wider audience and started to garner an enthusiastic following.

Back in 2009 Cook, whose real job is building fire engines, and a friend took their monster trucks on the road to auto shows and events. One such event was at the Kruse Plaza in Auburn. Dean Kruse, owner of the plaza at the time, saw what a big attraction the monster trucks were and asked if Cook would like to display them permanently at the Auburn facility. The new facility has an entire wall of plaques honoring drivers, builders, promoters and announcers. A new group will be inducted this month.

Tour operators and cruise lines base their pricing on a per-person double-occupancy rate so singles are charged a premium to bunk alone in two-bunk accommodations.

Sometimes it’s the same price as what a couple pays.

To truly travel alone, you buy your own airline ticket, rent your own room, arrange your own transportation, buy your own meals and do everything on your own. You can work with a travel agent to put together an itinerary and take advantage of any discounts

or flexible fees that allow you to change sites and dates if necessary. The agent will also have tips on how to get along at where you’re going.

Or you can wing it along the way.

One longtime friend picks their spot — a city in a part of a country they’d like to explore — and sets aside four to five weeks for the trip. On landing, their first chore is to grab a newspaper and rent a room for the stay if they haven’t been able to arrange this before leaving. This has become much easier with the growth of the bed-and-breakfast industry around the world. The proprietor also is your best source of information on safety and schedules for the sights you want to see.

Then it’s a shopping trip to get to know the neighborhood and renting a car or taking local transit to the various sites on their program. In many cases they fly or drive to other cities they’d planned to visit in that part of the world. To them, spending time somewhere new is no different than spending time at home. They enjoy being able to do what they want to do, whenever they want to do it, for as long as they wish.

They’ve made lifelong friends everywhere they’ve been and found that three basic phrases in the local language are all you need: “Please,” “Thank you,” and “How do you say that?”

General Custer and the 7th Cavalry %\ 3$6725 *5(* /$:621 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU He’s listed as “John Noonan (John McKinney)” in Kenneth Hammer’s book: “Men With Custer: Biographies of the 7th Cavalry.”

John Noonan was born in Fort Wayne in 1846. Neither parent is listed in Hammer’s book, so who they are remains a mystery.

Hammer begins by telling us that John “enlisted on Jan. 14, 1872, at age 25, in Yorkville, S.C., by Lt. Charles Braden.”

While many enlistees had previous occupations as farmers, John is shown as “previous occupation was soldier.” We are not told where he was in his previous soldier position. We may assume that when he enlisted in 1872, he was assigned to Company L as a corporal in the 7th Cavalry.

June 25, 1875, was a lucky day for John. That date was

when the Battle of the Little Big Horn took place. He, as were many 7th Cavalrymen, was “on detached service from June 15 at Yellowstone Depot in charge of the cattle herd.” These herds were a source of meat for the cavalry.

It was five years later, after Jan. 14, 1872, that John was “discharged on Jan. 14, 1877, at Fort A. Lincoln on expiration of service, as a sergeant of excellent character.” We learn further that “he had blue eyes, dark hair, fair complexion and was five feet, seven inches tall.”

This story cannot end without a bizarre look into the life of Sgt. John Noonan and his wife, “Mrs. Sergeant Noonan.”

Through “A dispatch, from Bismarck, dated Oct. 31, 1878,” we learn that “Mrs. Noonan was a laundress at the post and a most popular midwife.”

The bizarre discovery upon Mrs. Noonan’s death was that she “turns out to be a man.”

Further, “There is no explanation of this unnatural union except that the supposed Mexican woman was worth $10,000 and was able to buy her husband’s silence.”

Additionally, “He (John Noonan) was the third husband of the supposed woman who recently died at Fort Lincoln, but proved to be a perfectly formed man.”

Unfortunately, Sgt. John Noonan met a tragic death.

We learn that “Noonan died by his own hand (shot by carbine) in the company stable at Fort Lincoln on Nov. 30, 1878.” He was buried on the post cemetery, but later moved to the Custer Battlefield National Cemetery.

Thus ends the most bizarre story coming from the history of Fort Wayne and Custer’s 7th Cavalry.

During this COVID-19 pandemic, Jill has participated in providing care for the residents, support for the community and care for the families who bring their loved ones to Kingston.

books, literature and referrals to the community resources.

Understanding the disease process is very valuable in the caregiving process.

One of Jill’s passions is providing support and reassurance to care partners/loved ones. A move to Kingston adds additional support from professionally trained staff members to their caregiving team so they can once again resume the role of spouse, friend or child to their loved one.

As a caregiver and a support group facilitator for the Alzheimer’s Association, Jill encourages care partners to attend meetings to express their feelings and learn from the experiences of others. One of Jill’s greatest privileges is to hear the heartfelt stories and witness the love and compassion exhibited at these meetings.

She says you can see a true change in physical appearance and demeanor as they develop a trust and security with the Kingston’s team. Jill believes human kindness and compassion is the key to the memory caregiving success.

Making lists is helpful when downsizing %\ .857 - 1(66 1HVV %URV 5HDOWRUV $XFWLRQHHUV When people start to think about downsizing they may become overwhelmed, not knowing where to start.

One approach is to start with the end in mind. Visualize where you see yourself at the end of the downsizing journey. 22nd annual Coats for Kids campaign begins Monday, Nov. 1, marks the start of the 2021 Coats for Kids Campaign sponsored by the Volunteer Center. Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, the guest of honor, will kick off the campaign by distributing coats to the children at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at MLK Montessori School, 6001 S. Anthony Blvd.

This is the 22nd year for Coats for Kids. The program traditionally provides more than 6,000 warm winter coats to local underserved children. To date more than 72,000 coats have been delivered to over 100 area schools and social service agencies in the area.

Beginning Nov. 1 donations of new or gently used winter coats (children’s size 7 through adult sizes) are being collected at partner locations, including Peerless Cleaners, Volunteer Center, Sweetwater (main campus), YMCA (Fort Wayne and Huntington), Darlington Holiday Warehouse, Parkview Ortho Hospital and GM Union Hall. Collections will continue through Tuesday, Nov. 30.

Volunteer Center Executive Director, Ani Etter, said, “COVID-19 has added to the struggles many families were already facing to make ends meet. Your dona-

tion will help ensure that every child in need has a warm coat this winter. We need the support of our local community more than ever.”

Cash donations are greatly appreciated and will contribute to the purchase of additional coats, which are always needed. $25 will provide a new coat, hat, scarf and mittens to a child in hardship.

Fort Wayne firefighters, Volunteer Center community volunteers and YMCA team members will deliver the coats to schools and social service agencies during the first week of December.
