According to USA Pickleball, the game is “fun, social and friendly. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fastpaced, competitive game for experienced players.” Here are the basics. Pickleball is: • A fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. • Played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly modified tennis net. • Played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes. • Played as doubles or singles. • Enjoyed by all ages and skill levels. according to McCallum, they named the game after Pritchard’s dog, who was named Pickles. Currently in Rochester, there is one pickleball court, which exists on a modified tennis court and by most accounts isn’t ideal to play the game. Two men from Rochester Elks Lodge 2120 are looking to change that before the end of the year, however. Jeff Warner and Randy Clark came up with the idea together, although they came from very different directions to arrive there. Warner said he was introduced to the game several years ago while wintering in Florida. He noted in the community in which he stays, there are 216 pickleball courts available, and he takes full advantage of their ready availability when he’s there. “I play pickleball in the morning and golf in the afternoon,” he said with a smile. Clark, on the other hand, has never played the game, but has an interest and intends to take it up when once the local Continued on page 2
