%\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU This summer, Valhalla Farms — formerly Siders Blueberry Farm — enters its second season under the management of Drew and Stephanie McCulley, a married couple who, along with Stephanie’s mother Janie Shriver, purchased the popular pick-your-own blueberry business in 2020. But while the McCulleys may be new to growing blueberries, they are not new to either agriculture or Fulton County.

Both McCulleys have agricultural backgrounds and studied at Purdue University.

Drew is a seed advisor for Beck’s Hybrids and though Stephanie is now a full-time mom, she

formerly put her agricultural economics degree to work with Purdue’s 4-H extension office, and she hopes to become more involved with FFA in the future.

Maurie and Kathy Siders’ decision to sell their blueberry farm coincided with the McCulley’s desire to move back to Stephanie’s hometown to be closer to her family and raise their young children. At the time, they were living in Hartford City, near Muncie. “It made sense,” Stephanie recalled, “and they were excited to have a younger couple taking over the business … it’s a tradition that’s been here since the 1950s.”

In fact, one of the joys of the McCulley’s first summer was meeting the families who

came to enjoy the seasonal tradition of picking their own blueberries.

“We met people who had never been here before and people who had been coming here for generations,” said Stephanie. “It was great hearing the memories of someone 80 years old who brought their grandkids … It’s about a lot more than blueberries.”

Stephanie’s Fulton County farming roots stretch back prior to the 1880s when Stephanie’s great-great-great grandfather Daniel Stuckman established a cattle herd here.

Valley student is part of winning team in First Pitch competition %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “My favorite class this past year was entrepreneurship,” stated Brittany Benn, an upcoming senior at Tippecanoe Valley High School. “In this class we got to design our own business. We also got involved in the community. This year my group from Mr. Engbrecht’s Entrepreneurship class got into the First Pitch competition and took first place, winning $500.” The three girls comprising the team were: Benn, Carissa Slone and Abby Bowers.

Fedco’s First Pitch competition allows teams comprised of area high school students to present their product/service to the judges. After all the presentations are completed, the judges have 30 minutes to tabulate the final scores of the teams. Prior to the presentation day, teams submitted their business plans complete with financials, sales projections and market analysis.

“Our product was Reboot. Reboot is a medical boot with three interchangeable soles, a locking system and breathable fabric,” Benn explained. “It’s an advanced medical boot that is more comfortable than the original and allows for less injuries than are caused by the traditional boot.”

The girls came up with the idea after Benn was in a bad accident

and was relearning how to walk in physical therapy. “I was struggling with pain on the bottom of my foot that was unrelated to my injury. My whole leg was bruised because of my boot. So, when Mr. E brought up this project Abby, Carissa and I figured out a way to make our boot more advanced.”

Their hard work paid off. “We all feel very good about our efforts. It was cool to see that the judges liked our idea. We split the money, which gave us all $165.”

Benn, who is in National Honor Society at TVHS, has her eye on either Ball State or Indiana Wesleyan University. But she admits that she’s open to other schools as well. “After college, I would like to be a radiologist technician or a radiologist M.D. I find X-rays and MRI’s quite interesting. I would love to make a career out of radiology.”

All of her work is not confined to the classroom. “I am involved in softball for Valley. I’ve always enjoyed the sport, even when I was very little, and I’ve always found happiness in playing it.”

She is the daughter of Bryan and Angela Benn. She has a younger brother named Ruger.

“My hobbies outside of school are painting and reading,” Benn said. “I guess I enjoy doing those things because it provides a way for me to relax. It also gives me the opportunity to take some time

for myself.”

Benn has a job this summer working at Culver Academy. “I’m a summer camp clerk.”

She’ll always have fond memories of her year in the entrepreneurship class taught by Mr. Engbrecht, affectionately known by his students as Mr. E. “I like the fact that it’s pretty much a self-led class. We work together in small groups and come up with our own plans of action for our business. Jeff had been a social studies teacher and football coach for the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings since 1991 and loved his Viking heritage so much he considered his farm to be akin to the Valhalla of Norse mythology.

In addition to a variety of blueberry products, including honey (bees are also vital for blueberry propagation), pepper jam and mustard, Valhalla Farms offers freezer beef from the Shriver’s Hereford herd.

Though running from June to August, an unofficial beginning of the blueberry picking season is the Fourth of July weekend, though, as Drew commented, “It’s weather dependent.” And in keeping with the farm’s three foundational pillars of family, faith and tradition, Valhalla will host its second annual “Blueberry Church,” at 8 a.m. Sunday, July 3, with Brian Sewell of Whippoorwill Church officiating.

“Bring your lawn chair and your Bible,” said Drew. “It’s a community outreach. We want to be more connected to the community, and we’re looking for ways to be more involved.”

Though this is Valhalla’s second summer of business, it is the first crop of blueberries Drew established himself.

And while much of their background knowledge in corn and soybeans was transferable to this specialty crop, Drew, who makes agronomy decisions, still characterized his first year learning curve as “drinking from a firehose … I’m way more confident this year.”

In addition to the aforementioned products, Valhalla also of-

fers sweet corn, fresh produce and a field of sunflowers for photo opportunities. There are other ideas in the works for the future, including strawberries.

“We are excited to continue the traditions of what was formerly Siders Blueberry Farm as well as introducing new traditions of our own.”

James M. Hettinger, 67, Bourbon, died Friday, June 10, 2022, at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.

He was born April 20, 1955, to James P. (Delores) Het-$0(6 0 tinger. He mar+(77,1*(5 ried Donna L. Foster July 6, 1984. She survives.

Also surviving is his daughter, Jessie Hettinger, Bourbon; sons, James Michael (Amanda) Hettinger, Angier, N.C., Jeffrey (Catherine) Hettinger, Bourbon; stepson, Jeremy Foster, Monticello; sisters, Cindy Hettinger, Bloomington, Becky Cunningham, Rochester; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

A gathering of family and friends was held Wednesday, June, 22, at Gundrum Funeral Home, 1603 E. Broadway, Logansport.

Bonnie L. Montgomery died Jan. 14, 2022.

She was born Aug. 25, 1929, to Ernest and Ruth Mathias. She married Junior Herold; he preceded her %211,( / in death.

A memorial 0217*20(5< service followed by a celebration of life is being held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at the Fulton United Methodist Church, 7457 Liberty Ave., Fulton. Those who knew Bonnie are welcome to attend.

Toni Shafer Toni Shafer, 70, Akron, formerly of Greenfield, died at 7:56 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2022.

No services were held. Arrangements were entrusted to Titus Funeral Home, 2000 Sheridan St., Warsaw.

Betty J. McQuinn, 87, died Thursday, June 16, 2022, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 16, 1935, to Robert Wagoner, who passed away while she %(77< - was young. She 0&48,11 was raised by her mother, Dortothy (Pickens), and Jess Murray.

Surviving are her daughters; Elizabeth McQuinn, Logansport, Jo (Mike Elebasko) McQuinn, Walton, Lisa Chiavola, Loganport; son, Wesley (Donna) McQuinn, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, John McQuinn.

A celebration of life was held Monday, June 20. Burial followed at EverRest Memorial Park, Logansport.

Gundrum Funeral Home & Crematory, 1603 E. Broadway, Logansport, was entrusted with arrangements.

Donna Malott Woods, 80, Rochester, died at 8:37 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at Northwest Health, Valparaiso.

She was born Oct. 23, 1942, to Elmer H. and Ethel '211$ 0$/277 :22'6 Brown Malott.

She married David E. Woods Jr. July 16, 1960.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Ethel (Kerry) Woods Newman, Kewanna; son, David E. (Deborah) Woods III, Argos; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brother, Roscoe (Tina) Malott, Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; son, Elmer P. Woods; five sisters, Juanita, Margaret, Flossie, Hilda, Joan; and a toddler brother.

A celebration of life was held Saturday, June 18, at the Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester. Interment took place at the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.

The Ladybug Foundation, The Roots Yoga and Recovery Cafe of Fulton County are hosting a series of Well-Being Workshops 9-11 a.m. on alternating weeks now through Nov. 12 at alternating locations including Jarrety’s and Fulton County parks.

The workshops promote a communal approach to creativity and spiritual awareness through guided journaling, yoga sessions and mindful eating with lunch provided by a

local health goods provider.

Each session is $30 and includes a copy of Julia Cameron’s “The Artist’s Way,” all yoga materials and a light lunch.

Upcoming sessions include “Recovering a Sense of Identity,” July 2; “Recovering a Sense of Power,” July 16; “Recovering a Sense of Integrity,” July 30, and several more.

Hoosier Net to create statewide fiber network

Hoosier Net LLC, a consortium of internet service providers, that includes New Paris Telephone Inc., doing business as NP Tech and Rochester Telephone Company, announces its formation Wednesday, June 1. Hoosier Net is set to launch a multi-year, multi-million-dollar network across Indiana to boost capacity, internet access and reliability.

The company’s formation comes at a critical time for Indiana, as federal and state authorities prepare to distribute billions of dollars in broadband grant funds under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act’s Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment Program.

“Having statewide connectivity is vital for economic development by offering broadband providers faster speeds, more bandwidth and lower latency, which will genuinely make a difference for

Indiana,” said Scott Hiatt, Hoosier Net board member and CFO of Ninestar Connect.

Hoosier Net will attain statewide scale and enable broadband development by leveraging integrated and complementary assets. “Hoosier Net and current owner-member fiber systems span thousands of miles across Indiana and are well-positioned to enable the expansion and extension of Indiana middle-mile infrastructure to reduce the cost of connecting unserved and underserved areas,” said John Greene, chairman of Hoosier Net LLC and CEO of New Lisbon Telephone Company.

Hoosier Net will focus on offering high-speed fiber-optic backbone capabilities to owners, telecommunications providers and direct commercial clients such as hospitals, schools and government institutions. “As a middle-

mile network that connects 27 ISPs in Ohio, Independents Fiber Network is pleased about investing and working with Indiana Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers and Rural Electric Membership Corporations to develop Hoosier Net,” said Rob Shema, CEO of Hoosier Net and CNI. The Indiana fiber network will partner with INDATEL, a national network dedicated to providing fiber-optic telecommunications services in rural and urban areas. “INDATEL provides us with the competitive advantage we require, whether buying or selling transportation. It is the common link that provides Hoosier Net — and its member firms — with access to fiver that allows us to build our business,” said Dave Fox, Hoosier Net board member and general manager of Sweetser Telephone Company.

Prosperity and good times in the ‘50s %\ 5866 '$9,'621 *XHVW :ULWHU As a senior at Rochester High School in 1956, I made many trips around the Streamliner in my 1940 Chevy.

Downtown was a busy place, but of course the most important place to a teenager was the Streamliner because of the good food and the good looking car hops. It was located on the south end of Main Street back then. The following are some of the businesses I remember being downtown.

The Evergreen Restaurant, owned by Walt Bowen, was a great place to get lunch. Felts Stag Bar had great hamburgers.

Other eateries included Hamburger Hut, next to the Times Theater; Berghoff Cafe; New York Candy Kitchen; and Karnes Restaurant.

There was also a popcorn stand at 8th and Main, run by Ms. Sherbundy, that was painted red and looked like a real circus wagon.

There was Baxter’s Drug Store, and do you remember the mushrooms in the glass container at Gilbert’s Drug Store? I remember Freddy Perschbaker grocery

Let’s study the Bible What is the purpose of the Bible?

(Read 2 Timothy 3:14-17) “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteous%\ 5(9 521 ness.” (2 Timo385.(< thy 3:16) Many people reject the Bible without ever actually reading it.

But since the Bible claims to answer life’s deepest questions, it makes sense to see what it has to say. Even if you read a paragraph at

a time, God can teach you the Bible’s truth and use it in your life. You will also discover that Jesus Christ was a real person who loves you and that life’s greatest joy comes from following him.

Timothy’s relationship to the Bible began when he was a child and learned the OT Scriptures from his mother and grandmother. They did not merely teach him the facts of the Bible; they gave him assurance and spiritual understanding.

Timothy knew for himself the truth of the word; he did not depend on others to defend the word for him.

This word imparted faith to him (Romans 10:17), and this faith in Christ brought salvation. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 are a great testimony to the divine origin and character of the Bible. The Bible is the inspired Word of God. The word “inspired”

means “God-breathed — filled with the breath of God.” The Spirit of God enabled men of God to write the Word of God (see 2 Peter 1:20-21), for the Spirit of God is the “breath” of God (John 3:1-8; Ezekiel 37:1-14).

“All Scripture” means that every word of the Bible is inspired.

What is the purpose of the Bible?

Of course, salvation is the first purpose (2 Timothy 3:15), but Christian living is also included. The word is profitable for teaching (doctrine), conviction (reproof), setting right (correction), and discipline (instruction). It enables the child of God to become a man or woman of God, matured in the things of the Lord. “Per-

fect” (2 Timothy 3:17) does not mean sinless; it means “mature.” And “thoroughly furnished” means “fully equipped” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). So, the Bible transforms the child of 2 Timothy 3:15 into a mature person in Christ; it equips God’s people to be servants. It is fine for Christians to take study courses and learn methods of ministry, but the best way for them to equip themselves to serve God is to study and practice the Word of God. Study books tell us how, but the Bible gives us the motivation and power to live what we learn.

It is interesting to compare the uses of the Bible with the order of the

epistles: doctrine — Romans; reproof — 1 and 2 Corinthians; correction — Galatians; instruction in righteousness — Ephesians and Colossians.

The great need among churches and Christians today is to return to the Bible. If the churches do not get back to God’s Word, the false religious teachers will take over and millions of lost people will face the judgment of almighty God because they were led astray by religious lies.

School safety and gun violence discussion held June 27 Recovery Cafe and The Outlet Youth Center will host a discussion on school safety and gun violence from 5-6:45 p.m. Monday, June 27, at Fulton County Public Library in Rochester, 320 W. 7th St. This is a chance for students to share thoughts and ideas that can increase their feeling of belonging, not being alone and connectedness

with other students.

Organizers emphasized the event is not a political forum or a debate.

Students will work together in small groups and adults will have their own separate tables for discussion. Each student group will have one professional counselor to moderate the conversation.

The organizers reserve the right to remove anyone who argues politics, interferes with student groups, engages in aggressive, threatening, argumentative or disrespectful behavior.

The event is intended to help participants discuss ways the community can help students feel (and be) more safe.

It was reported a few weeks ago that we are very 0$<25 7(' busy at the '(1721 city level. The process for the past six-and-a-half years of an administration that has operated under the mantra of “A New Direction” has completed and started so many projects to improve Rochester, that it has become necessary to

turn our small conference room at City Hall into a “Projects Room.”

We have white boards (boards that can be written on, changed and added to) listing current projects by project number, how financed, project manager and current status.

This report is intended to keep the public informed of the progress we are making, including any completion or addition of projects.

It will also be a time to highlight a project with updates and pictures.

The following is a list of the current projects: • The waste treatment plant upgrade.

• The installation of nine LED lights and poles around the courthouse.

• Water main “loop” installation for the Deer Run addition.

• Clarifier covers to be installed at

the waste treatment plant.

• Main Street storm water upgrade and paving, Phases 1 and 2.

• Minnow Creek reconstruction and upgrade.

• Federal grant sidewalk program.

• Fourth Street drainage project.

• Construction of new Salt Barn.

• Construction of new street “Apache Drive.”

• Nickel Plate Trail completion (Redevelopment Commission).

• Monroe Street storm sewer line and phone line obstruction.

• City Pool revamp.

• Republic landfill transmission line installation.

• Putting green repair and replace at golf course.

Now, 18 years later, the memory of Kelsey lives on, even through people who never met her, including some who weren’t yet born when she died. Each Thanksgiving morning since 2004 faithful supporters show up for the “I’m Thankful Four,” a four-mile road run to benefit the Kelsey Mikel Memorial Foundation, which provides two scholarships to NorthWood High School seniors.

The Mikels have been active in many other organizations to help preserve their memories of Kelsey.

They have been active in the Indiana Donor Network, which helps facilitate organ, tissue and eye donation and transplants across the country. They are also active with the organization’s annual “Gift of Life Celebration,” at which Mikel has played an integral role as its emcee for several years.

“August 21 is a day that I’ve always allowed myself to be in a bad mood,” Mikel said, referring to the anniversary of his daughter’s death. “Last year on August 21, my daughter, Mattie, gave birth to our first grandchild. It has allowed me to redefine that day.”

Mikel said one of his wife’s biggest fears was people wouldn’t remember Kelsey. Through their efforts and the support of their community, it is assured that her memory will continue to live on.

Fulton Fun Day entry forms available soon The return of the Fulton Fun Day Festival is fast approaching. The Fulton-Liberty Lions Club has prepared a jam-packed day Saturday, July 30, and will feature many past favorites along with a few new activities.

Beginning the week of June 27, the foyer of the Fulton Branch Public Library will display all of the entry forms for competitive events and highlights of the many free participatory activities available. On the library’s Art Walls will be a showcase of the Caston Elementary students’ artwork that placed in the festival’s contest spotlighting the theme of “Color Our

New events for the Festival: 8-10 a.m. will be the Lions Breakfast in the Park; at 1:30 p.m. there will be a Doubles Horseshoe Tournament; at 2 p.m. a Round Robin 14U Softball Tournament will begin; and at 3:30 p.m. a Bike Safety Talk will be near the stage.

Music will be provided this year by Mainstage Karaoke from 12:30-4:30 p.m. followed by NightShift from 5:308 p.m.

Other events to compete in are Mushball, 5K Race/Walk, Free Throw and 3 Point Contest, 3-on-3- Elementary, Middle School (next year’s grade) and Open basketball, Euchre and Cornhole. And for pure fun, there will be a dunk tank.

Children have many free activities to pursue: Pedal Tractor Pull, Chalk Art Contest, Princess Makeover, a bounce house, Blue Dragon Taekwondo demo and Bike Safety Talk.

Food favorites include Red Barn Elephant Ears and Becca’s Concessions’ steakburgers, along with the Lions Club’s porkburger sale downtown from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
