Tiffany Noble readily admitted she had to step out of her personal comfort zone when Debbie Fernandez asked her to lead The Compass at The Cross church in Rochester. However, since that time early in 2021, Noble has taken it from an idea to a weekly reality benefitting many people in the area who could use a hand up during uncertain times.

As it is described, The Compass provides “navigation through life and sobriety with fun, interactive lessons such as cooking, grocery shopping on a budget, GED information, creating a resume with a felony, job fairs and so much more.”

Each Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., The Compass hosts a program at The Cross church, located at 100 W. Third

St. in Rochester. Noble admitted the live program usually doesn’t have many people in attendance. However, the corresponding real-time Facebook Live broadcast of the program usually draws a nice audience. Those who are able to come to the church in person also have the opportunity to receive free groceries from Matthew’s Market. For Noble, however, she is thrilled with everyone who participates in the weekly program, whether virtually or in person.

Each week, Noble invites a different person to make a presentation on their area of knowledge. Each lesson focuses on a different life skill, whether it be financial, educational, personal care, nutritional, legal or otherwise.

Rochester Police Department, Pastor Martin Furrow of The Cross; Stephanie Harding who spoke about couponing; Jennifer Reed of the parent advisory board connected with the department of child services; Mary Kay, director of Compassionate Health Care in Rochester; and Lori Stiffler nutrition educator for Purdue Extension Fulton County, just to name a few.

This summer, The Compass also offered classes on helping people earn their high school equivalency diploma, formerly known as the GED. In fact, Noble said she participated in the classes in her own personal quest to receive her diploma.

Another very important outreach ministry of The Compass is a regular job fair, which is held at the church.

Noble said the job fairs have been taking place monthly, but they will be moving forward with a quarterly schedule to help maximize the time and opportunities for both the employers and those seeking jobs.

One employer who has found success through The Compass’s job fairs is Modern Materials, a metals manufacturing company located in Rochester. According to Modern Materials’ human resources director Celia Kramer, the business has hired two employees through the job fairs, one of whom has been with the company for four months and another who has worked for two months. She noted both employees have become very valuable members of the team.

Local artist creates ornament displayed at Indiana Statehouse %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “Many artists are solitary people,” stated Erica Coffing, Rochester. “Sometimes we get in the habit of hiding behind our easels.

But I’m finding that the biggest part of art is sharing it with the community and beyond.”

This Christmas season, Coffing designed an ornament highlighting Fulton County’s historic round barns, which will be on display throughout the holiday season at the Indiana Statehouse.

“I got an email from Chamber Director Jillian Smith in November about the ‘92 Reasons to Celebrate,’ a county-wide endeavor sponsored by First Lady Janet Holcomb to decorate the Statehouse Christmas tree. Each county was to submit an ornament that represented what their particular area was noted for. In Fulton County, we are known for all the round barns in our area. So that is what I created.”

The round barn ornament is not only an artistic masterpiece, but it also required some carpentry craftsmanship.

“I started by drawing the ornament on paper, playing a bit with the shape. Then I traced it onto a piece of red oak that was about a fourth-inch thick. I used a bandsaw to cut it out, then I sanded it and

drilled a hole in the top for the ribbon. I painted it with acrylic paint and used a sealant on it.”

Smith mailed it to the Statehouse before the Dec. 1 deadline.

“I felt like it was a great honor to be chosen by the Chamber to create the ornament,” Coffing explained. “There are so many other great artists in the area, so it was quite a responsibility.”

Coffing is not only a great artist in her own right, but also a great art teacher. She taught a year at

Caston and since then, has taken on some art students, giving them lessons out of her home. Her real dream is to create an atelier, an area art school and workshop for people who want to explore and create.

“My vision is to create a studio where artists can come to find guidance and the tools to make their art dreams come alive. I’d like to have easels and paints, a printing press, and sculpting tools.

It’ll be as simple as having a gym membership. People will pay a membership and have a place to create. We’ll also host shows and workshops there.”

To Coffing, art is deeper than drawing and painting. “I’ve had students come to me and say, ‘I can’t even draw a straight line.’ I enjoy telling them, ‘You don’t have to! You might be more interested in carving a piece of linoleum and printing it. Or experimenting with chemical or organic natural processes. Some artists watch crystals grow. The world of art is full of unlimited possibilities! It’s bigger than you and I can even imagine!’”

She is also on the board of the Round Barn Lab. “We hope to create an art makerspace, where people can come together to work on projects and share knowledge and dreams. We’ll have industrial equipment and a loom for weaving, crafting tools, as well as sewing and woodworking equipment. We want it accessible to all of Fulton County” Coffing teaches at the Logansport Art Association and the Heartland Artists. This past summer she taught classes at the Fulton County Historical Museum.

“I love it when my students begin to see their work improve,” she concluded.

Cornbread recipes Good neighbors: Here are two very good cornbread recipes, one with meat and one without. Cornbread stuffing with fruit and vegetables: 1 package (81/2 ounces) cornbread/muffin mix, 1-2/3 cups chopped onions, 2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms, 2 cups sliced celery, 6 tablespoons butter or margarine, 1-1/2 cups grated peeled apples, 1 cup chopped pecans, 3/4 cup shredded carrots, 2 tablespoons fresh minced parsley, 3/4 teaspoons each dried thyme, marjoram and rubbed sage, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, 1 cup chicken broth.

Prepare cornbread according to package directions; cool on a wire rack. Cut cornbread into cubes; place on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until lightly browned. Place in a large bowl.

In a skillet, saute chopped onions, mushrooms and celery in butter; add to cornbread cubes. Gently stir in apples, pecans, shredded carrots, parsley, herbs and pepper. Add broth; toss gently. Grease a 2-1/2 quart casserole dish. Cover and bake at 325 degrees for one hour. Uncover and bake 10-15 minutes longer or until

heated through. Yields: 8 cups.

Cornbread sage stuffing: 4 cups cubed 1/2-inch French or Italian bread, 4 cups cubed 1/2-inch prepared cornbread, 1/2 pound bulk pork sausage, like Bob Evan’s or Jimmy Dean, 1 medium onion (1/2 cup) onion, chopped, 1 rib (1/2 cup) celery, chopped, 1-1/2 teaspoons dried thyme leaves, 1/2 teaspoon dried sage, 1/2 cup butter, melted, 1 can (14.5 ounce) chicken broth, 1 egg, lightly beaten. Note: For cornbread, use Jiffy’s (8.5 ounces) cornbread mix and bake according to directions. Heat oven to 375 degrees. Butter a 2-1/2 -quart casserole or baking dish; set aside. Place bread cubes onto ungreased (or use parchment paper on pan) 15 by 10 jelly-roll pan. Bake, stirring once, for 10-11 minutes or until lightly toasted. Add cornbread cubes to pan; continue baking, stirring once, for 10-11 minutes or until all cubes are toasted and dry. Cool completely. Meanwhile, place sausage into a 10-inch skillet. Cook over medium heat until sausage is no longer pink (3-5 minutes); drain. Add onion and celery; continue cooking until vegetables are tender (2-3 minutes.) Place bread cubes and cornbread cubes into large bowl. Add sausage mixture and thyme and sage to cornbread mixture; toss to mix well. Add butter, broth and egg; stir until well mixed. Spoon dressing into prepared casserole dish. Bake for 35-45 minutes or until thoroughly heated and top is crisp. Yields: 8 servings.

Free pilot ground school offered Mentone Flying Club is offering free private pilot ground school at the Rochester Airport terminal building. Classes run from 7-10 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 20 thru March 17.

The classes are designed for private pilot students who want to prepare for the private pilot knowledge test, students who want to supplement their flight

training, current pilots who want a refresher or anyone interested in becoming a pilot.

Al Capone picture — I have read in many publications about Syracuse-Wawasee history a picture exists of Al Capone at the Spink-Wawasee. He was born Jan. 16, 1933.

On Nov. 29, 1952, he married Gloria Dawn Gardner, she sur'21$/' vives.

Also surviv- &/,1721 '5$&+ ing are his sons, Donald R. and Lucinda Drach, Davenport, Iowa, Douglas William Drach, Winamac; daughters, Deborah D. Drach, Rochester, Dixie D. and Michael Jr. Weldon, Kewanna; 15 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Danford; several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac.

Burial took place at Star City West Cemetery.

Eileen Gross

E i l e e n Gross, 99, died Dec. 2, 2021.

She was born Sept.

9, 1922. She married Kenneth Gross, he preceded her in death during World War II. On Oct. 29, 1945, she mar- (,/((1 *5266 ried Don Gross, he preceded her in death.

She is survived by her children; Jim Gross, Argos; Jerry and Janeal Gross, Statesville, N.C.; Jean and Ron Brown, Anchorage, Ark.; Ron and Bettie Gross, Rochester; Dan and Deb Gross, Leiters Ford; Donna Higgins, Wake Forest, N.C.; grand children; great-grandchildren; great-great grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 21 at Odom Funeral Home, 104 E Lakeshore Drive, Culver, IN 46511.

Odom Funeral Home was entrusted in assisting the family with arrangements.

John W. Ortman

John W. Ortman, 76, Winamac, died Dec. 10, 2021.

He was born Jan. 19, 1945.

On Nov. 18, 1967, he married Rachelle Lain, she survives.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Dec. 18, at Bethel Bible Church, Winamac. Burial took place at Winamac Cemetery, with military graveside services provided by American Legion and VFW. Arrangements were entrusted to Frain Mortuary, Winamac.

Richard C. ‘Dick’ Rader

Richard C. “Dick” Rader, 97, Akron, died at 3:35 p.m. Dec. 16, 2021.

He was born July 19, 1924.

On Nov. 18, 1945, he married LaDonna M. Summe, 5,&+$5' & she preceded ´',&.µ 5$'(5 him in death Jan. 24, 2019.

He is survived by a daughter, Candi Newell, Silver Lake.

Services took place Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron. The interment took place following the service in the Akron Cemetery.

Mike Saner

Mike Saner, 67, Akron, died at 1:10 a.m. Dec. 13, 2021.

He was born May 6, 1965.

On Feb. 14, 1981, he married Mary K. Malott, she survives.

A funeral service was held Thursday, Dec. 16, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron. The burial took place in the Athens Cemetery.

people die in drunk-driving crashes in the U.S. That’s approximately one person every 52 minutes. While driving under the influence is a daily concern, it’s more prevalent around certain holidays, with Christmas and New Year’s among the deadliest.

Last December, 73 people lost their lives in fatal collisions in Indiana. Of those, 11 involved a drunk driver, according to ICJI. “It’s important to remember that these aren’t just numbers we’re talking about,” said Robert Duckworth, ICJI Traffic Safety director. “These are people with loved ones whose lives were cut short due to impaired driving. Your choices behind the wheel matter, and they can have serious consequences.”

Throughout the campaign, officers will be working overtime to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, which includes more than just drugs and alcohol.

Certain prescription and over-thecounter medications can also affect a person’s ability to drive safely, so it’s important to read and follow all warning labels or consult with a doctor before driving.

The department is asking for the public’s help to keep Indiana roads safe this holiday season by designating a sober driver or using a ride service, public transportation or taxi if alcohol is consumed. Motorists are also encouraged to wear a seat belt, slow down, put down the cellphone and to make sure kids are properly buckled up. In addition to being required by law, wearing a seat belt also reduces the risk of injury or death in a crash.

“If your holiday celebrations include alcohol, make arrangements ahead of time to get home safely – don’t wait until after you’ve had a couple of drinks,” said Devon McDonald, ICJI executive director.

“One wrong decision behind the wheel is all it takes to cause a tragedy.”

Healthy immune systems produce a few different types of immune cells that develop when exposed to a vaccine or a virus. Vaccines introduce a foreign protein to your body’s immune cells. It is important to realize immunity is not an absolute block from getting an infection. Especially if it has been several months since that foreign invader has been seen. If you are exposed to COVID-19 virus by an infected person for an extended period, the number of viral particles you breathe in can number in the millions. With only a few guards at the gate, it is common for the virus to get into the body and start replicating. But because your immune system has seen this invader before, it can quickly jump into action and produce millions of fighting cells that neutralize the viral invader.

it off without the need for hospitalization. But they will feel sick and be contagious for a few days.

DRINK & DRIVE Don’t spoil Christmas by drinking and driving Christmas gatherings this year will likely be more numerous than they were in 2020, but don’t cause any grief for the family by drinking and driving. Getting caught driving while drunk in Indiana can bring severe consequences.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one person in the United States dies every 50 minutes in a drunk driving crash, claiming more than 10,000 lives per year. NHTSA defines drivers as being alcohol impaired when they test for a blood alcohol concentration of at least 0.08 grams per deciliter. Any fatal crash involving a driver at that BAC level is categorized as an alcohol impaired-driving crash; thus, any fatalities that happen in a crash meeting that criterion is deemed an alcohol-impaired fatality.

During 2019, 106 people were killed in alcohol-impaired collisions in Indiana, accounting for 13% of the state’s traffic fatalities. Males accounted for 76% of all drivers in Indiana fatal crashes, 16% of which were reported to be legally impaired. Alcohol impairment in fatal collisions was highest among male drivers aged 21-24 and 25-34 years.

Consistent with collision rates involving other types of risky driving behaviors, rates of alcohol-impaired crashes were highest during weekend overnight hours, the same time frame when crash-related fatality and incapacitating

injury rates peaked.

Getting caught drunk behind the wheel can have serious legal, financial, personal and professional consequences. You could serve jail time and/or up to 480 hours of community service, and have a suspended or revoked license, fines and court costs. There are other possible consequences, such as civil lawsuits, mandatory enrollment in one or more assessment and treatment programs, higher insurance rates or denial of coverage, job loss or restrictions, restitution to victims, diminished credit ratings and weakened future job prospects.

Indiana law says a person operating a vehicle, whether or not on a highway, while intoxicated can face charges ranging from a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine, to a Level 4 felony (up to 12 years in prison and $10,000 in fines), depending upon prior record and whether an accident caused injury or death. Each injury or death constitutes a separate criminal offense.

If you refuse to submit to a Breathalyzer or chemical test, it will result in a mandatory license suspension of at least one year.

During the holiday season the Indiana State Police and other law enforcement agencies will be out in greater numbers to discourage impaired driving. As of early October of this year, 683 people have been killed in crashes

Some preachers and some people who present Christmas pageants like to condemn the innkeeper because he did not give Mary a decent place to give birth to her baby, but the Bible is silent about the matter. The “inn” was probably a typical Eastern “caravansary,” a two-story structure (the lower level was for animals) built around a courtyard where travelers could camp. Jesus must have been born in one of the cattle stalls; the feeding trough was his bed. See Philip-

The Shepherds And Angels.

(Luke 2:8-20). In that day, shepherds were considered to be at the lowest rung of the social ladder.

Their work not only kept them away from the temple and the synagogue, but it made them ceremonially unclean. Yet in his grace, God gave the first announcement of the Savior’s birth to lowly shepherds. (See Luke 1:52.)

Was Gabriel the angel who appeared? What a privilege this messenger had to tell about the advent of the Messiah. We have the privilege of sharing the good news with the world and angels cannot take our place. The “singing army” of angels proclaimed the glory of the Lord. Luke’s Gospel is filled with praise (Luke 1:64; 2:13, 28; 5:2526; 7:16; 13:13; 17:15, 18; 18:43; 19:37; 23:47; 24:53). Since 27 B.C., the famous “Roman peace” (Pax Romana) had been in effect; but there was no real peace on earth, nor can there be until the prince of peace reigns on David’s throne.

The first human ambassadors of the Gospel were humble shepherds who hastened to see the baby and then told everybody what they had seen and heard (Acts 4:20). The word in verse 16 means “to find after a search.” The Magi had a star to guide them (Matthew 2), but all the shepherds had was the sign given them by the angel (verse 12). The shepherds, like the angels before them, glorified and praised God (verse 20).

The Faithfulness Of Mary And Joseph. (Luke 2:21-24).

Jesus was “made under the law” (Galatians 4:4) and was therefore circumcised on the eighth day (Genesis 17:12) and given the name “Jesus,” which means “Jehovah is salvation.” But there were two other Old Testament laws Mary and Joseph had to obey: the purification of the mother after 40 days (Leviticus 12) and the redemption of their firstborn (Exodus 13:1-12). Because Mary and Joseph were too poor to purchase a lamb, they purchased two birds.

The redeemer was redeemed. Oh, how they loved Jesus.

FCPL activities for kids Fulton County Public Library in Rochester will be showing movies in the children’s department at 4 p.m. Dec. 30.

Virtual story time takes place on the FCPL Facebook page at 3 p.m. Thursdays. In-person story time, with grab-and-go crafts available, takes place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays at the library.

Pop-In-Kin Elves at Akron Public Library The Pop-In-Kin Elves are back at Akron Public Library. Kids and families can stop and try to find their hiding places in the days leading up to Christmas.

The library also has a Christmas “I Spy” display with a brand new challenge.

The library shows “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 22. Bring a blanket and pillow. Snacks and interactive fun are provided.

The public is invited to stop in and view the library’s mini canvas Christmas Art Show, featuring works by its patrons, The mini canvases will be on display until the end of the month.

On Dec. 14, Fulton County was one of six counties awarded $30 million through the Indiana Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative, also known as READI, a joint effort involving the North Central Indiana

Regional Planning Council and included six counties: Cass, Clinton, Fulton, Howard, Miami and Tipton.

its portion of funds for quality of life and workforce attraction opportunities including new multifamily housing opportunities, a long sought-after hotel development and other infrastructure developments within the county.

Fulton County Commissioners and the Fulton County Council committed the funds necessary to join other cities and counties in the region in retaining Indianapolisbased HWC Engineering. HWC led the process, compiled the plan, and completed the successful final application.

The award followed four months of planning and collaborating with others within the region. Representatives most involved in the process included interim director of Fulton Economic Development Corporation, Tiffany Futrell; Director of Development for the Fulton County Community Foundation, Brian Johnson; Former Executive Director of Fulton Economic Development Corporation, Terry Lee; Fulton County Council member, Randy Sutton; and Rochester Community School Corporation Superintendent, Jana Vance. The Fulton County Steering Committee listed above would like to thank all Fulton County employers and residents who participated in the planning of the plan.

Following administrative processes that are required, it is anticipated work on projects will begin in 2022.

The 2022 Waterfowl Workshop for waterfowl control operators will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Jan. 25. The workshop will be held virtually.

The workshop is required for all contractors who want to become qualified as WCOs to conduct waterfowl trapping, transporting, relocation and/or euthanasia for hire in Indiana during 2022.

All first-time WCOs must attend the workshop to be eligible to work as a WCO in 2022. Attendance is also encouraged for all WCOs, but those who have attended the workshop in previous years may opt to test out.

Those interested in taking the test should contact Debbie Walter at dwalter@dnr.IN.gov or (812) 789-2724. The 2022 exam will be available Feb. 1.

Employees of WCO contractors are welcome to attend the workshop, but it is required only for individuals who will physically conduct waterfowl

trapping, transporting, relocating and/or euthanizing for hire.

Individuals pursuing qualifying status for goose euthanasia for the first time will also need to provide the division with a certificate of attendance to the Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators Association goose management course or complete a Division of Fish & Wildlife approved eight-hour equivalent goose course.

Before any waterfowl management activities can legally be conducted, WCOs must ensure the DFW has received all necessary paperwork.

Registration by Jan. 17 is required to participate in this virtual workshop. Once registered, participants will be provided the webinar link and training materials.

ship to artists and creative professionals by focusing on a portfolio career, a community-engaged artistic practice and several key business concepts.

The workshop takes place May 11-13 in Noblesville. The deadline to apply is 4:30 p.m. Jan. 6.

the administration of booster doses to individuals who attest to meeting CDC guidelines as outlined below: • 16 and older and completed their primary vaccination series of Pfizer at least six months ago.

• 18 and older and completed their primary vaccination series of Moderna at least six months ago or completed their primary vaccination of Johnson and Johnson at least two months ago.

Teens 16-17 years old are only eligible to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine booster.

Individuals 18 years and older may choose which vaccine they receive as a booster dose. Some people may have a preference for the vaccine type they originally received and others, may prefer to get a different booster. CDC’s recommendations now allow for this type of mix and match dosing for booster shots. Anyone age 5 and older may now receive a Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccine.

Pfizer Adult, Pfizer Pediatric and Moderna primary and booster doses are all available at the Fulton County Fairgrounds. Appointments can be scheduled online or walk-ins welcome.

Fulton County Health Department also offers a COVID testing site at the Fulton County Fairgrounds for free drive up testing, no appointment required. Hours for testing are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Winenger selected as Woodlawn interim CEO Originally from the Argos area, John Winenger has been selected as the interim chief executive officer for Woodlawn Hospital. He officially started Monday, Dec. 13.

Winenger is a seasoned leader and consultant with more than 30 years of leadership and management experience. During the past 20 years, he has worked closely with physicians and hospitals on sustainability and change management, MD leadership development and clinical integration strategy within large health delivery systems. This included health system business development, hospital operations and hospital service line leadership roles.

Since 2008, Winenger has served in 10 CEO and COO executive/C-suite leadership roles with small and mediumsized community hospitals, MD practices and health systems.

He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives since 2003. He also is a part time

adjunct faculty member with Indiana Wesleyan University and Nebraska Methodist college since 2016, teaching more than 25 different classes in strategy development and execution, business development, high reliability organizations and quality, as well as current topics in board governance and leadership.

Winenger’s credentials include an undergraduate degree in public healthcare administration from Indiana University in 1984 and a master’s degree from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1993. He enjoys golf, reading, volunteer work and networking with friends and professional colleagues.

He has been married to Lois for 35 years. They have two children: Justin works in environmental engineering and graduated from Purdue University in 2018. Elena graduated from Indiana University in 2021 and works in health services with CVS and Roche Diagnostics in Indianapolis.

Hunting, fishing, trapping license fees increase For the first time since 2006, Indiana DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife has increased fees for hunting, fishing and trapping licenses. Commercial license fees also increase, some for the first time since the 1980s.

The increases will be applied to personal licenses starting with the 2022-23 license year (April 1, 2022 – March 31, 2023) that will go on sale in January. The fee increase does not affect licenses for the remainder of the 2021-22 license year (April 1, 2021 – March 31, 2022), even if those licenses are purchased after Jan. 1.

The new fees allow DFW to maintain core programs including habitat restoration, maintenance of public lands, scientific

research and education, and expansion of other services to manage Indiana’s fish and wildlife for everyone to enjoy.

Funds will also go to the DNR Division of Law Enforcement to ensure it is equipped to provide public safety and enforce the laws governing natural resources.

The new license prices were determined by comparing license fees among other Midwestern states and balancing the rising costs of resource management.
