Santa and Mrs. Claus encourage Fulton County residents to keep the Christmas spirit.

The couple did an interview from their temporary home on the Fulton County Courthouse lawn Wednesday, Dec. 13.

“Even though times are tough for everybody, it’s extremely important to not lose that Christmas spirit,” said Santa.

“Just don’t lose it.”

Mrs. Claus said she thanks county residents for “keeping the (Christmas) magic.”

Santa said overall the Christmas spirit seems up in the county.

“Compared to previous years, it’s a lot better,” he said. “The whole COVID thing took a major toll. It seems to be a lot better.”

“There’s a lot more participation,” said Santa. “The community has participated a lot more.”

Santa said the Rochester Downtown Partnership’s Holiday Stroll Friday, Dec. 1 when he and Mrs. Claus arrived “had more activities” than the year before.

As of Wednesday, Dec. 13, he and Mrs. Claus had visited with approximately 500 kids at the house.

Rochester Middle School athlete looks forward to excelling in high school

By LAURIE LECHLITNER Staff Writer “I love sports,” stated Colton Newcomb, Rochester. “I’ve been involved in football, baseball and wrestling for the past four years. I want to try basketball next year.”

Newcomb is in fifth grade at Rochester Middle School. He looks forward to continuing his athletic endeavors in high school.

Newcomb is a defensive lineman on the football team.

“Sometimes I’m a linebacker. It depends. The coaches move us around a lot.”

He loves tackling his opponent in a game. “I’m built for football. I want to practice up for high school.”

In baseball, batting is his favorite position. “I’m in the outfield when the other team is at bat.”

According to Newcomb, wrestling is a game of strategy. “A wrestler needs to be strong. We also need to be fast thinkers.

When we are pinned, we need to figure out moves that put us back on top.”

Newcomb has made many friends in sports. “Colton is very social,” stated Mom (Brittney Newcomb.) “He loves being in sports and has a great attitude. He’s also a leader who sticks up for those who might be smaller or younger than he is. He makes sure the underdog is not picked on.”

When asked what it takes to be a good athlete, Newcomb remarked, “An athlete needs to be strong. We need to be able to figure out strategies and be thinking about what our opponent is going to do next. We have to be fast on our feet.”

He’s been part of the Royal Rangers for a year and a half, a

By RUSS DAVIDSON Guest Writer A city with Christmas lights makes a beautiful sight. A drive through our town tells us Santa Claus is still around.

Christian-based club much like the Boy Scouts. “We go camping and are trained to survive in the wilderness. For example, we learn about safety gear and how to put up a tent. Already I’ve been to day camp and spent a night at a campground with the club members and our sponsors.” Royal Rangers meet at The Cross Wesleyan Church, Rochester. Newcomb has earned numerous merit badges.

The family attends Mill Creek Missionary Church in Rochester, where Colton is part of the youth group. “Youth meetings are a lot of fun. I enjoy the fact that we are able to talk about funny videos where the characters are learning how to be better Christians. We learn right along with them.”

Newcomb is good with his hands. He thinks he might want to be either a construction worker or mechanic after he graduates from high school.

“My grandfather was a mechanic. And besides, I love cars.

My favorite is a Challenger SRT Hellcat. I like sports cars.”

Although he doesn’t have a favorite class in school, he likes science and math. “I especially like studying maps of the United States. Homeroom is a fun class, too, this year.”

He describes his sisters as “real pains.” But, in actuality, they are a couple of his dearest

temperatures, and all of this is like summer vacation for us,” said Santa. “It’s a summer temperature for us. It’s bizarre.”

Santa said he and Mrs. Claus brought one reindeer, Prancer, to the Holiday Stroll.

“The sleigh’s in the shop getting repaired. That way we can make it home in 10 days ... to get everything loaded up,” he said.

Santa detailed his preparation for working all night to deliver Christmas gifts.

“It’s making sure we get plenty of sleep and we’re ready, obviously checking the list, making sure we didn’t miss anybody,” he said.

He said he keeps going while delivering gifts via eating cookies and drinking hot chocolate as well as coffee and energy drinks.

Mrs. Claus noted Santa’s favorite cookies are sugar and chocolate chip, if people are wondering what to put out.

The couple said people should also have one carrot for the reindeer if possible.

“So each house we visit, one reindeer gets one carrot, so if we

keep it in line and keep it sequential, that way they all get fed and they all keep their bellies full,” said Santa.

He and Mrs. Claus reflected on their favorite Christmas songs, with Santa preferring “White Christmas” by The Drifters. Mrs. Claus likes “Silent Night,” though not by any particular artist.

Visitors to the couple’s house may notice the decor is scaled down from last year.

“Last year, we had two trees,” mentioned Mrs. Claus.

“It was just too much,” added Santa.

He and Mrs. Claus decide how the house will look each year, with the elves helping decorate.

Santa said the couple may “hopefully” get a new house next year.

“That’s what we were told,” he said.

Kids may still share their Christmas wishes with Santa from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, before the couple leaves to return to the North Pole.

friends. “Izzie is 7 and Ellie is 9. We play games like Uno together. We also like virtual games.”

His family members are most important to him. “I love it when Dad (Solomon Newcomb) takes us camping or fishing. We enjoy spending time in the great outdoors together.

Even though my sisters and I fight sometimes, when it comes down to it, we’re always there for one another. I guess that’s what family’s all about.”

Let’s study the Bible We can be sure of the word of God (Read James 1:21-27)

(James 1:22- 25) James uses the word “perfect” several times in this chapter. In verses 1-2 we have God’s perfect work; in verses 13-20, God’s perfect gift; and in verses 21-27, God’s perfect law. God’s perfect work is his purpose to mature us; his perfect gift is his goodness to us in times of testing; and his perfect law is the word (the Bible) that strengthens and sustains us.

The phrase “swift to hear” (verse 19) reminds us of how the

Christian should hear and obey God’s Word, the theme of this section. James uses an illustration from agriculture in verse 21 when he talks about “firstfruits” and “the implanted (engrafted) word.”

James may be referring to the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23) in which the heart is compared to soil and the word to seed. If believers are going to receive the word and get strength from it in trials, then they must pull out the weeds!

“Superfluity of naughtiness” can be translated “rank growth of wickedness” — weeds! The soil of the heart must be prepared to receive the word. If we have unconfessed sin in our hearts, and bitterness against God because of our trials, then we cannot receive the word and be blessed by it.

In verses 22-25, James changes the picture and compares the word to a mirror (glass). The word of God reveals what we are on the inside, just as a mirror reveals how we appear on the outside.

When Christians look into the word, they see themselves as God sees them and thus are able to examine their hearts and confess

their sins. But it is not enough merely to look into the word and read it; we must obey what we read.

A person who merely hears the word but does not obey it is like a man who glances casually into the mirror, sees that his face is dirty, and goes on his way without doing anything about it. Such a man thinks he has bettered himself spiritually when he has actually harmed himself.

Verse 25 tells us we must gaze carefully (not glance casually) into the word, study it, and through it see ourselves. We must then obey what the word says. If we do, we will be happy (blessed).

It is not reading the Bible that makes a person happy; it is obeying what it says.

James calls the word (the Bible) “the perfect law of liberty” because obedience to the word produces spiritual liberty (John 8:30-32). Living the Christian life is not bondage, it is wonderful liberty!

Auditorium, locker room work part of TVHS construction project progress

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Work done in the new auditorium and locker room areas is part of the most recent monthly progress in Tippecanoe Valley High School’s construction project.

At its monthly work session on Thursday, Dec. 14, the Tippecanoe Valley School Board heard that information from The Skillman Corp. Project Manager Scott Rogers. The Skillman Corp. is the construction management company for the project.

In the last four weeks, workers have “backfilled the seating risers with stone” in the auditorium and “set spiral stairs” there, according to information from Rogers.

He said “masons have also been working in the locker room additions, getting the rest of those

walls built.”

“For the pool, we’re almost done with all the painting,” said Rog-

ers. “And we’ll get that scaffolding down again about the middle of January.”

Joseph R. Bailey Zimmer Employee

Joseph “Joe” R. Bailey, 69, Rochester, passed away at 12:53 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 20, 1954, in Rochester, the son of Curt and Audrey (Brown) Bailey. Joe was employed at Biomet, currently Zimmer, in Warsaw for the past 20 years and had also worked for JOSEPH R. Lobdell Emery for many years prior, where he had BAILEY served as union president. In his younger days, he had worked at a gas station and for Pike Garage Doors. He enjoyed playing frisbee golf, rock collecting, crystals, loved cooking and entertaining friends and family.

Survivors include his children, Jennifer (Kory) Warstler, Syracuse, and Casey Bailey, Indiana; brothers, Thomas Bailey, Charles (Nancy) Bailey, Sheldon Bailey and Douglas Bailey, all of Rochester; sisters, Ann (Gary) Douponce, Winona Lake, Pamela Bailey, Rochester, and Kimberly (Todd) Springer, Sarasota, Fla.; grandchildren, Ripley White, Syracuse, and Parker Thompson, Rochester; and great-grandchild, O’Rion Thompson, Rochester.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roger Curt Bailey; and grandson, Jesse Lee Bowers.

Funeral services were conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester. Friends visited from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Rita Carolyn House

Rita Carolyn House, 75, North Judson, formerly of Lexington, Okla. died Thursday, Dec. 7, in Pulaski Health Care Center, Winamac.

She was born on Nov. 26, 1948.

On Feb, 3, 1968, she married Dennie House; who preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Yvonne Rodgers, and Kimberly Brooks; four grandchildren; one greatgrandchild; one brother, Charles Gregson Jr.; one sister, Serretha (Lawrence) Gruszka; stepbrother Raymond Jones; stepsister, Kathy Sommers; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Gregson; her mother and stepfather; Martha and James Jones.

The family will host a celebration of life at a later date.

Cheryl L. Hodge, 70, Akron, died We d n e s d a y, Dec. 13, 2023, at her residence.

She was born Jan. 14, 1953. On Dec. 14, 1986, she married Gary CHERYL L. Wayne Hodge; HODGE he survives.

She is also survived by blended family members, Richard Hodge, Mooresboro, N.C., Edward Hodge, Shelby, N.C., and George (Kelly) Hodge, Dayton, Ohio; three grandchildren; sister, Marsha Randall, Colorado; brother, Kenton Randall, Colorado; and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Garold D. and Dorothy L. Buck Randall; and brother, Kelvin M. Randall.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2644 Old US 31 North, Rochester.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service in the church. Pastor Keith Hannah will officiate. Interment will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.

Donald E. Galbreath, 91, Winamac, and Columbus, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, in Belmont Health and Rehabilitation Center, Columbus.

He was DONALD E. born on April GALBREATH 2, 1932. He married Darlene Galbreath; who survives.

Interment will follow at 1:15 p.m. in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Argos.

Ralph M. Loehmer, 91, Monterey, died at 3:53 p.m., Monday, Dec. 11, 2023, in his residence.

A mass of Christian burial was held Saturday, Dec.16, in St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Monterey.

Interment was held in St. Anne Cemetery, where military rites were performed by the U.S. Navy and the Collins-Tasch American Legion Post 399, Monterey.

Craig C. Cowie, 73, Claypool, formerly of Wakeman, Ohio, died Dec. 16, 2023, in Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester.

He was born on Oct. 7, 1950.

Ivy Tech named chamber November Member of Month The Fulton County Chamber of Commerce has named Ivy Tech Community College as its November Member of the Month.

Ivy Tech’s Kokomo Service Area includes Fulton, Cass, Howard, Miami, Pulaski and Tipton counties. The main campus is in Kokomo, with classes also in Logansport and Peru. It offers 37 academic areas of study.

Help offered for students includes academic advising, disability services, mental health services and a array of wraparound services, such as childcare and transpor-

tation assistance.

Ivy Tech Community College is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2023. Founded in 1963, Indiana Vocational Technical College offered one academic program and enrolled 3,000 students. The school is now the largest singly-accredited community college in the United States with 19 campuses, offering more than 70 programs for more than 173,000 students across the state.

Today, the Kokomo Service Area serves almost 6,000 students a year.

Ivy Tech currently serves 125 students from Fulton County, including those in dual enrollment and dual credit classes. Ivy Tech “College Connection Coaches,” including Jovanny Hernandez, who serves Rochester and Caston high schools, help prospective students get ready for higher education.

Suzanne Dillman serves adult students in Fulton and surrounding counties.

Fulton County students also are benefiting from the dual credit and dual enrollment courses offered in the high schools.

In the last year, Rochester High School offered 16 dual credit courses. Ivy Tech served 154 students who completed 559 credit hours of dual credit coursework and 71 credit hours of dual enrollment coursework, resulting in a cost savings of $96,069. Three earned post-secondary credentials.

Caston High School offered five dual credit courses, allowing 55 students to complete 252 credit hours of dual credit coursework at a savings of $42,858.

Ivy Tech is connecting with local businesses to create new training initiatives within the

workplace.

Building relationships with local companies is an initiative of Ivy+ Career Link to help meet the needs of the local workforce. These partnerships were created by the local chamber and facilitated by the following companies: Rochester Iron and Metal, ROC Fab and AAM. These same businesses joined 10 other regional manufacturing companies in sharing their stories with more than 240 students at the recent Manufacturing Day open house.

Ivy+ Career Link representatives have visited state agencies based in Fulton County to talk with their employees about the advantages of Ivy Tech’s Achieve Your Degree program. Donato was given the award for her work on Senate Enrolled Act 464, which states the juvenile court does not have jurisdiction over an individual for certain offenses if the individual was between the ages of 12 and 18 at the time of the alleged violation and is more than 21 when charged with the offense.

“I am proud to have worked with IPAC and the victim and their family who bravely brought this issue to light through their story,” Donato said. “It’s been a long journey getting this legislation passed, and it’s an honor to receive this award. Kewanna Public Library news “Warm Up to a Good Book” is the 2023 Adult Winter Reading Program at Kewanna Union Township Public Library. It will be held Jan. 2 to Feb. 29. All adult readers ages 19 and older are welcome to participate. All books must be checked out from Kewanna Union Township Pub-

Janell Mulligan enjoys working for Woodlawn Janell Mulligan has been a part of Woodlawn Health System for many years.

She has her bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University and her Master of Science in Nursing from Purdue Global. She began working for Woodlawn in 2012.

When asked what she likes about working at Woodlawn, Mulligan responded, “The staff is kind and compassionate. We have

the honor to care for our neighbors and community.”

Mulligan started work in pediatrics in 2021.

“I love watching kiddos hit milestones and being a part of their journey as a guide and positive role model,” she said.

When she is not helping children, she enjoys spending time with her family and relaxing with a good book. She also likes to garden and fish with her girls.

In today’s politically polarized world, holiday office parties and family gatherings can lead to increased tensions, arguments and even long term damage to important relationships.

Christine Miles, author of the book “What is it Costing You Not to Listen,” which offers tips on how to navigate difficult conversations, said instead of trying to challenge someone you disagree with, ask them questions like a journalist would to learn the story behind their position.

“Let that person talk more, sit back and listen to understand, seek the perspective they are coming from, and then the de-escalation begins,” Miles explained. “That’s not about agreement, that’s just about ‘where are you coming from?’”

Psychologists have warned holding back your feelings when a funny uncle makes an off-color comment can actually cause harm. Not speaking up can lead to depression and health problems including immune dysfunction, hypertension and even cancer. Miles noted asking questions is one

way to make your voice heard, lower tensions, and decrease defensiveness.

Most people tend to focus on trying to change someone’s mind, which she pointed out is where arguments begin. Listening can be the best way to stop a fight before it starts.

“Because if someone wants to engage you in a point of view that you don’t have, they might just be looking for the argument,” Miles noted. “If you take the bait, be careful, because that’s where the damage can come in.”

Miles suggested listening to people who have different opinions, using your natural curiosity, can actually strengthen social bonds, and educate younger family members about the value of healthy debate. It is also far less effective; for example, when trying to solve an important problem if you only engage with people who hold the same perspective or worldview.

“It doesn’t bring out innovation, and it really misses a lot of important points,” Miles emphasized. “Civic engagement is huge, but we have to manage our differences by seeking to understand, rather than seeking to change minds.”

Tomassi: Barn Christmas display ‘brings out the kid in people’ Text and Photos

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer A Mentone man says the Christmas decorations display in his barn “brings out the kid in people.”

It took David Tomassi four months to set up the array in his barn located at 510 S. Franklin St., Mentone. He had an electrician “increase the voltages” to allow for it.

Tomassi has opened the barn up for people to tour, with this weekend the last time it may be done for the year. People may call him at (702) 332-9449 to see what those times are.

Though anyone is welcome to stop by, Tomassi said he especially welcomes the families of police, firefighters and military members.

“It’s my appreciation for what they do for us, and I really want them to know this,” he said. “I don’t think the police officers and firefighters (get) enough credit. So anytime I see a military man or a police officer, I say, ‘Thank you for your service,’ and I want them to know that.”

Tomassi started collecting the Christmas decorations in 1999.

“It was the Christmas spirit,” he said of what motivated him to start getting the items.

Those include trains, a fullsize Santa, two full-size motionactivated snowmen and the many pieces of his Christmas villages.

He’s still buying new items.

“I prefer the older villages because they’re better made,” he said, noting newer ones are constructed of plastic.

Tomassi shops at places including eBay, Amazon, The Bradford Exchange and Mr. Christmas.

His favorite pieces include his Mr. Christmas train and the Ferris wheels and choir and ballroom dancing ones.

Tomassi first put out the display at Christmas parties he would have for friends when he lived in

Las Vegas, Nev. “They came every year, and they cried every year,” he said.

Tomassi said he views the decorations as a “fantasy world.”

“I just like the physical energy that comes from the people when they walk in. It’s like ‘Oh, my gosh,’” he said. “They look at the trains and the snowmen especially.”

He said several 90-something women came through and started dancing with the motion-activated snowmen.

“It looked like they were dancing like they were 17 years old.

It just brings the child back out,” said Tomassi.

He plans to add more items for next year.

Drive sober and safely this holiday season As the holiday season gets back to normal as pandemic panic and worry subside, don’t ruin the holly jolly season by drinking and driving.

In Indiana, driving while intoxicated is punishable by law, with repercussions such as incarceration, large fines and severe injury or death.

According to research by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drinking and driving kills 28 people a day in the United States, which adds up to more than 10,000 lives lost each year.

Impaired drivers not only put themselves and others at risk, they also take a significant amount of time and resources from law enforcement.

In 2022, the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and local law enforcement increased efforts to promote and support high-visibility enforcement in the form of sobriety checkpoints, signboards and patrol car signage. Accord-

ing to research conducted by the Center for Disease Control, sobriety checkpoints reduce fatalities, injury accidents and property damage accidents by about 20%.

According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, in 2022, the DUI Task Force program issued 35,968 citations with 2,800 DUI arrests for alcohol specifically. A total of 1,365 officers worked 18,565.78 hours and made a DUI arrest every 6.4 hours. According to the NHTSA, drinking and driving costs more than $44 billion in deaths and damages annually.

The legal limit of blood alcohol content is 0.08%, at which point one may experience poor muscle coordination and judgment, selfcontrol, reasoning and memory are impaired.

Young people are the most atrisk for drunk driving. NHTSA data shows that drivers between the ages of 21-24 account for 27% of all fatal alcohol-impaired

Your car insurance rates after a DUI or DWI will skyrocket.

Generally, after receiving a DUI or DWI on your record, car insurance companies will assess you as a “high-risk driver” and will increase premiums to cover the increased risk. For example, according to BankRate, post-DUI car insurance rates can increase anywhere from $800 to $3,000.

To avoid drunk driving, have a plan set in place before a drink touches your lips. There are plenty of ways to avoid drunk driving, such as assigning a designated driver, using a taxi or ride share app, or calling a friend or family member for a ride home. If you are hosting a gathering and someone does insist on driving home drunk, the best course of action is to report them. It could save a life.

Drivers are encouraged to report drivers that exhibit signs of impaired or unsafe driving.

‘Giving Tuesday’ held at the community foundation On Tuesday, Nov. 28, the Fulton County Community Foundation hosted its annual Giving Tuesday event, where event goers mingled and celebrated the international day of generosity.

Community member donations surpassed $193,000 and combined with $25,000 in match funds from RapidView, LLC and over $256,000 in community fund matches, the Giving Tuesday total contributions were over $449,000 for Fulton County.

Dollars will be used to generate grants and scholarships which positively impact the community now and forever through endowments.

Giving Tuesday, always held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, brings the generosity of people all around the world together to make real change, and year after year, Fulton County exceeds the day’s sentiment.

Rochester winter sports update —

Horn, Brant Beck, Deming and Brady Beck remain undefeated on the season. Horn is ranked No. 7, Brant Beck is No. 4, Deming is No. 9, and Brady Beck is No. 2 in their respective weight classes in the most recent IndianaMat.com rankings.

Brady Beck became the first, four-time McKee Invitational champion.

Rochester began the week with a 59-15 win over host Triton in a dual match Dec. 13.

Girls Wrestling Girls wrestling is hardly a novel thing at Rochester High School.

They have their own regular season tournaments, including a 55-team tournament at Lebanon in which they competed Saturday and one which they hosted Nov. 18.

They have their own state tournament under the auspices of Indiana High School Girls Wrestling. The IHSAA has declared girls wrestling an emerging sport.

Rochester has three ranked wrestlers — Grace Hiroms, Laine Peppler and Lilly Gerald — in the most recent IndianaMat.com girls rankings.

But until Dec. 13, Rochester had never participated in a girls dual match. Now one can cross that bit of history off the list as the Lady Zs won 10 of the 11 contested matches by fall and rolled to a 60-6 win over host John Glenn.

Grace Hiroms and Lexi Haughs won twice each by fall, and Kyra Doran (120), Makenna McKee (125), Amber Blackburn (130), Lakodah Clevenger (135), Laine Peppler (145) and Lilly Gerald (105) all had one fall.

Boys Basketball Tanner Reinartz hit four, 3-pointers and scored a careerhigh 26 points, and Owen Prater added a career-high 21 to lead the Rochester boys basketball team to a 74-51 win over host North Miami in the Three Rivers Conference opener last Friday.

After trailing 37-33 at halftime, Rochester switched from a man-to-man to a zone for the entirety of the second half.

Rochester travels to Tippecanoe Valley at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Girls Basketball Rylee Clevenger hit four, 3-pointers in the second half and scored a game-high 14 points.

Jadyn Field added 11 points and eight rebounds to help the Rochester girls basketball team stay unbeaten in Three Rivers Conference play in a 38-28 win over visiting North Miami at the RHS gym Thursday.

Kaiden Hanley, a Holy Cross College recruit, scored 13 points to lead North Miami.

Rochester improved to 7-6 overall and 5-0 in the Three Rivers Conference.

Swimming The Rochester boys swimming team went 2-0, while the Rochester girls swimming team went 1-1 in a three-way dual meet with Kokomo and Logansport at the Rochester Middle School Saturday.

The Rochester boys beat Logansport 102-71 and Kokomo 109-59.

The Rochester girls defeated Logansport but lost to Kokomo.

Rochester had five individual champions in the boys meet, including Tanner Reese, Wes Steininger, Spencer Backus, Jake Seuferer and Reece Johnson.

Junior Ava Thomas took second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 500 freestyle.

Tanner Reese, Spencer Backus and Wes Steininger each won an individual event. They teamed up with Jake Seuferer to win the 200 freestyle relay for the Rochester boys swimming team in a 107-68 home loss to Culver Academies Dec. 11.

In the girls’ meet, Rochester’s Audrey Widman and Aubrey Miller finished second and third.

Tom Bauters CPA named December’s Chamber Member Of Month Tom Bauters CPA is the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce’s December Member of the Month.

Bauters of Akron is following in his family members’ footsteps by being a certified public accountant.

His father was a CPA, and his mother was a farm girl whose northern Indiana family farm dates back to the land grant days.

Bauters noted his parents grew up in the Depression era and instilled in his nine siblings and him a strong work ethic, deep faith in the Lord and love of family. He has two older brothers who are also CPAs, which also influenced his career choice.

Bauters graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Notre Dame in 1985. He spent the first 11 years of his career in public accounting, helping individuals and businesses with tax compliance and planning needs.

He obtained his CPA certification in 1987 and his master’s in tax degree from Grand Valley State University in 1990.

Since 1997, he’s worked as the tax lead for multi-national, publicly traded manufacturing companies, and for eight of those years, he worked in a dual role as both the tax lead and assis-

tant treasurer.

These responsibilities expanded his experience base to include all things tax and treasury, with additional expertise in multistate income tax compliance, cash flow, tax and financial planning, merger and acquisitions, state and local tax incentives, international tax, and the successful resolution of federal, state, and local income tax exams.

In 2014, he and his wife, Lanette, opened their tax services firm, Tom Bauters CPA. He finds working with individuals and businesses in finding solutions to tax and financial issues the most rewarding part of his job.

He likes helping couples structure a new business and work with them through the challenges and ever-evolving tax and financial issues as their business grows.

Bauters said he has a servant’s heart and enjoys helping clients. He said his clients aren’t a number or a dollar sign, but rather are people with whom he works collectively to figure out solutions that make “sense/ cents” for them.
