The eighth annual Shopping Guide News of Fulton County Christmas Bucks promotion was another success, with $1,000 in local shopping scrip being distributed to area residents, and one lucky sponsor being awarded a check for $1,000.

Hundreds of entries were dropped off at participating area merchants in hopes of winning some of the coveted currency, which can be used at any of the participating sponsor businesses.

This year, 16 merchants took part in the promotion, including Clay’s Flooring and Interiors, Rochester; Craft Crossing, Rochester; Enyart’s True Value, Rochester; Flirt Boutique, Rochester; Harvest Moon, Rochester; L&B Country Oasis, Delong; Oil Change Express, Rochester; Petunia’s Antiques & Treasures, Rochester; Refined: A Resale Boutique, Winamac; Rensberger & Phil’s Automotive Repair, Rochester; RTC Fiber CommunicaContinued on page 3

They learned the trade from their mother’s friend, who had two online clothing businesses,

and their grandmother, a master seamstress.

“When I went to college, I studied biochemistry and biotechnology,” stated Ebony. “We learned a lot about the chemical side of things. Your skin is the largest organ, and it ab-

sorbs pretty much everything you put on it. So, everything I wear is all-natural fiber.”

The sisters make mostly all their clothing.

“What we don’t make, we hire other seamstresses to make,” Ebony said. “We were raised with a somewhat traditional lifestyle, but like a lot of people, things creep into your lives. Fast food creeps in; cellphones creep in — I felt like we were being skimped on everything. For me, raising my children, I want them to have more of the values and the frame of mind that a traditional lifestyle brings. We try to do everything locally or do it ourselves to ensure it’s high quality, has longevity and is done right the first time.”

One of the many ways the sisters reflect their traditional values is through their custom clothing line called Traditional Life Styles. It is natural fiber clothing Ebony describes as prairie or western style, with skirts, dresses, aprons, bonnets, bloomers and more.

The Nava sisters have also

a large garden, Shetland sheep, turkeys, chickens and Angora rabbits.

Ivory takes care of the rabbits. She currently has four white males, a silver male and two black rabbits, along with some bunnies. The rabbits are kept for their fiber, which the girls use for spinning and weaving.

“It’s another natural fiber we work with. What’s special about the wool from rabbits is you don’t have to wash it before you card it and spin it.

With sheep, you have to shear the wool off and wash it — sometimes you have to wash it twice to get the lanolin oil out.

With Angora rabbits, you comb the hair out, and as long as it’s clean, you can use it right away,” Ivory said.

Once a month, Ivory combs the rabbit’s hair out, which does not harm the rabbits and grows back quickly. They also sell and trade the wool from the sheep and have plans to incorporate the sheep’s wool into their clothing line.

In July, the Nava sisters made their skills more accessible to the public. They opened Rochester Mending & Alterations at 706 Main St. Inside the former Gun Connection building, the shop is open by appointment and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The sisters mainly mend and do alterations, but they can also do custom work. “If someone has an idea of what they want, we’ll work with them,” Ebony said.

“We also do restoration projects. We see a lot of marine repairs,” Ivory added, “We recently remade a pontoon cover that a gentleman brought in that had been torn up from a storm.”

Whether it’s a zipper, hem or restoring a prize-winning jacket to its former glory, Ebony and Ivory Nava are happy to help.

Each sponsor displayed a box in their business into which readers could drop off entry forms printed inside the Shopping Guide News, as well as available at the store. One entry was randomly drawn from each location and winners were then pulled from those 16 entries for five prizes of Christmas Bucks, ranging from $50 to $500. The bucks can be spent in any of the participating businesses before the end of the year. In addition, each sponsor of the promotion was entered into a prize drawing, which for the fourth year was a check for $1,000.

The Christmas Bucks promotion is designed to encourage local shopping for the holidays. No purchase was necessary to be part of the contest, but entrants had to go to the individual stores to drop off their form and were permitted only one entry per visit.

This year’s first place winner of $500 in Christmas Bucks was Richard VanDuyne. His winning entry was deposited at Clay’s Flooring and Interiors in Rochester. VanDuyne noted he and his wife, Barbara, will use the Christmas Bucks at Clay’s

Kenneth Ray Hubler, 73, Rochester, passed away at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021, at his residence.

He was born April 2, 1948, in Dayton, Ohio. He was the son of Arthur and Wilma (Height) Hubler and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Kenneth had been a truck driver for many years and had also worked for Walmart before retiring. He .(11(7+ 5$< attended Grace United Methodist Church and had +8%/(5 been a member of the VFW. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and oil painting.

Survivors include his children, Matthew S. Hubler, Rochester, Jason C. Hubler, Goshen, Samantha M. Hubler, Wolcottville, Robert A. Hubler, Iowa City, Iowa, and Allen J. Hubler, Wetumpka, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tina M. (Hubler) Mead, in 2000 and his parents.

Services will be announced at a later date with interment at Citizens Cemetery, Rochester.

Patricia L. Kingery Retired From T.M. Morris Manufacturing Patricia L. Kingery, 83, Fulton, passed away at 9:35 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, 2021, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 20, 1938, in Rochester, the daughter of Arthur and Helen Louise (Tobey) Thompson. On Nov. 4, 1957, in Chicago, Ill., she married William J. Kingery. He preceded her in death Jan. 21, 2017.

3$75,&,$ / Patricia had been a homemaker raising her five .,1*(5< children. When her children’s schooling was complete, she worked for T.M. Morris Manufacturing until her retirement. She enjoyed bird watching, especially cardinals, her cats, crocheting and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her children, Bonnie Kingery, Logansport, Kenny Kingery, Fulton, Jeff Kingery, Rochester, Julie (Lynn) Miller, Russiaville, and Alan (Lori) Kingery, Kewanna; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Lorraine (Larry) Norman, Akron; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Joan Hudkins and Donna Jean Bowyer; and brother, Dave Thompson.

Private services and interment will be conducted at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester.

Georgia Mae Townsend Real Estate Agent Georgia Mae Townsend, 88, Rochester, passed away at 3:25 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 2021, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Peru.

She was born June 21, 1933, in Muncie, the daughter of Orville E. and Dessie (Edwards) Renfroe. On Aug. 27, 1950, in Macy, she married Harold L. Townsend. He preceded her in death Aug. 29, 2013.

Georgia had been a homemaker as well as real estate agent and appraiser. She had worked in real estate markets in Indianapolis and Peru. While living in Indianapolis, she had been a member of the North United Methodist Church and upon her return to Rochester, she attended Grace United Methodist Church. In her leisure time, she enjoyed sewing.

Survivors include her daughters, Victoria Lynn Townsend, Peru, and Laura Ann Mihankhah, Lexington, Ky.; two grandchildren; several greatgrandchildren; sister, Cora (Richard) Reese, Denver; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Marsha Ann Koons.

Private interment will take place at Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Logansport.

Vaughn Baugh, 77, Rochester, passed away at 10:57 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021, at his residence.

He was born July 6, 1944, in Logansport, the son of Harvey V. and Alma Edith (Cappis) Baugh.

On Jan. 20, 1990, in Rochester, he married Linda Lou Squires. She preceded him in death July 11, 9$8*+1 %$8*+ 2016.

Vaughn had worked as an owner/operator truck driver for many years before retiring. He had been a member of ABATE, American Legion Auxiliary and the American Fisherman Association. He enjoyed fishing, socializing with all his friends and tinkering on various projects.

Survivors include his children, Henry (JoEllen) Baugh Sr., Rochester, Terry Lee Baugh, Arkansas, Austin (Christina) Baugh, Terre Haute, Danny (Niki) Amich, Rochester, Trula (David) Colt, Goshen, and Jason (Victoria) Amich, Noblesville; grandson/live-in caregiver, Henry Baugh Jr., Rochester; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Sylvester Baugh, Arkansas; and several nieces and nephews.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Monday approved a new imaging drug, developed by a Purdue University researcher, that can help spot tumors during surgery with the use of fluorescent technology.

Cytalux is marketed by West Lafayette-based On Target Laboratories Inc. and was created

by Dr. Philip Low, an icon in Indiana’s life sciences sector. The FDA approved the drug for early detection of ovarian cancer, one of the leading causes of gynecological cancer deaths.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Low explained how the technology helps surgeons.

“When you turn on the fluorescent lamp, then those lesions light up like bright stars against a black sky. And it allows the surgeon to see exactly where these hidden disease tissues are located, and then they can go in and remove them,” said Low. “The surgeons were able to find additional malignant tissue or improve the practice of surgery.”

Surgeons currently rely on preoperative imaging and visual inspection of tumors. Low said that process can sometimes miss tumors, or they go undetected.

“Complete removal of all malignant tissue is the goal of ovarian cancer surgery, however identifying all lesions can be challenging,” said Dr. Janos Tanyi, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania and investigator on Phase 2 and 3 studies. “In the phase three study, additional cancer was detected in 27% of patients, showing great promise in the ability of CYTALUX to help surgeons identify malignant lesions that may otherwise be missed during surgery.”

Moving forward, Low said the technology could have other applications beyond ovarian cancer or the discovery of other tumors.

“There are also opportunities to make normal tissues, that are often accidentally damaged during surgery, we can color those different colors,” said Low. “So in the future when the surgeon goes in, the cancer may look green, and the bile duct can look blue, and the blood vessels can look orange. The surgeon can basically cut by colors.”

Feeder and other birds T h e r e were no OUTDOOR NOTES birds on the bird feeder outside the window beyond my computer when I sat down to start writing this morning. But it By Neil Case was early.

The sky was just getting light.

Six house sparrows flew in and landed on the feeder shortly after I sat down. A goldfinch joined the sparrows, then a tufted titmouse.

I hadn’t started my next article.

I was just deciding on a subject.

I could write about house sparrow, goldfinch or tufted titmouse, but I have written about each of those, some recently, some more than once. I was hoping for a bird I hadn’t seen recently, or better yet, one I hadn’t seen at one of my feeders, or at all.

Six more goldfinches landed on the feeder and another tufted titmouse. I decided to take a break, left my computer, went to the kitchen and got my lunch. I didn’t return to my computer then, but sat down at the dining room table.

Outside a large window by the dining room table are several bird feeders, a roofed platform feeder, an unshelled peanut feeder and two suet feeders. There were house sparrows on the platform feeder when I sat down. A blackcapped chickadee and two whitebreasted nuthatches landed on the platform feeder with the sparrows, then a tufted titmouse, a cardinal and five blue jays. Two more tufted titmice landed on the peanut feeder. A downy woodpecker landed on one of the suet feeders. A hairy is another that visits my feeders and a red-bellied woodpecker is another.

Then came the prize of the morning, a white-crowned sparrow. I see a white-crowned every year, but only now and then. This one landed in a bush near the feeders, flew down to the ground, then up to the platform feeder,

then back to the ground. A whitecrowned sparrow is another occasional visitor, a “some-time” visitor. Another more northern nester and sometimes winter visitor is a red-breasted nuthatch.

Leaving the dining room, returning to my computer, I found another winter visitor, a darkeyed junco. It was on the platform feeder with a number of goldfinches. Dark-eyed juncos are not rare winter visitors. We see them every winter. But we don’t usually see juncos until snow covers the ground. In Iowa, when I was a boy, my school mates and I called juncos slate-colored juncos and snow birds.

I have one more bird feeder, a thistle seed feeder, outside a kitchen window. That feeder is visited daily, summer and winter, except when the weather is severe, by goldfinches and occasionally by a purple finch. Goldfinches also visit the other feeders around the house.

I’m a devoted feeder-bird watcher. I’m a devoted watcher of birds anywhere and any time.

But at my desk, where my computer is, at the dining room table or in the kitchen, I’m frequently looking out a window. There I see my feeders birds. Birds I see, other than those I’ve already named, are hairy woodpecker and redbellied woodpecker.

In summer, I see song and chipping sparrows, red-winged blackbirds, grackles, cowbirds and house wrens. My older son has another woodpecker coming to his feeders, a pileated woodpecker, the biggest North American woodpecker. That’s a bird I would like to see at my feeders and do see occasionally in wooded areas when I go wandering.

Other birds I see regularly when I go wandering, walking or driving, are crows, turkey vultures, red-tailed, warblers, Cooper’s and sharp-shinned hawks and kestrel, wild turkey, ducks and geese, gulls and terns, shore birds, herons and all the other waders.

If it has feathers, I want to see it, and maybe write about it.

Let’s study the Bible Isaiah’s inward look (Read Isaiah 6:1-13) “So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone!

Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of %\ 5(9 521 unclean lips; 385.(< For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.” (Isaiah 6:5) Isaiah had pronounced woes on other people, but now he cried, “Woe is me!” He admitted he was a sinner, he confessed his sin, and the Lord cleansed him. Were it not for the sacrifice on the altar, we could never approach the throne.

“Men are never duly touched and impressed with a conviction of their insignificance, until they have contrasted themselves with the majesty of God,” wrote John Calvin. This was true not only of Isaiah but also of Job (Job 42:5–6), Daniel (Daniel 10:16–17), Peter (Luke 5:8), and John (Revelation 1:17).

A true vision of God and his holiness always makes us realize our own sinfulness and failure. Job saw God and repented (Job 42:6); Peter cried out, “I am a sinful man” when he saw the Lord Jesus Christ’s power (Luke 5:8). Selfrighteous rabbi Saul saw his own righteousness was but “garbage” next to the glory of Jesus Christ (Acts 9 and Philippians 3), and he believed and became the Apostle Paul. When believers have a true

experience with the Lord, it does not make them proud; rather, it humbles and breaks them.

When Isaiah confessed his sins, he mentioned especially his unclean lips. Of course, unclean lips are the products of an unclean heart. The prophet knew he could not faithfully preach for the Lord unless he was prepared and cleansed. How different from some Christians who rush out to serve Christ before taking time to meet the Lord and be cleansed.

God met the prophet’s need: He sent a seraph to cleanse him with a coal from the altar. How tragic it would be to have the throne without the altar. There would be conviction of sin, but no cleansing.

Notice it was more important for the seraph to equip Isaiah to be a soul-winner than to praise God. True worship ought to lead to witness and service. Too many Christians want to hold on to a “spiritual experience” with the Lord, rather than be prepared to go out to share the Lord with others.

God is our redeemer and let us remember he is our creator also.

We should praise him for that.

When we climb to a mountaintop or walk down by the ocean, we can praise him. “Everything that has breath” should praise the LORD (Psalm 150:6). Our breath comes from him (Acts 17:25), so we ought to use it to praise his name and tell others about our redeemer and creator.

There is a wonderful word of encouragement in Isaiah 6: God quickly answers prayer and cleanses us (1 John 1:9). The Lord longs to equip us to serve him.

How to enjoy the holidays without overloading your New Year’s resolutions (BPT) - Face it, everyone’s done it - abandoned wellness goals over the holidays, hoping to make up for it with New Year’s resolutions.

According to a recent study, half of Americans have broken a diet due to the holidays. In the fifth annual “Writing Off the End of the Year” survey, commissioned by Herbalife Nutrition, the average respondent expects to gain eight pounds over the holiday season. But most aren’t worrying about the weight gain, and instead plan on enjoying the season without sticking to their diets. What’s their solution? More than 60% say they will wait till the new year, making that extra weight next year’s problem.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Putting those extra holiday pounds on your New Year’s resolutions just makes it harder down the road. And

unfortunately, the pandemic has compounded the problem. For 40% of respondents, the extra weight they anticipate is in addition to weight they’ve already gained during the pandemic. The stress of the past year and a half has spurred many to overeat, with 65% feeling like they “deserve” treats this year more than previous years. Between the pandemic and the holidays, how can you avoid piling on the pounds - and overloading your 2022 resolutions?

“Holiday celebrations don’t have to destroy your healthy lifestyle,” said Dr. Kent Bradley, chief health and nutrition officer, Herbalife Nutrition. “Focus on your longterm goals, so you can make more thoughtful choices.”

Here are tips for staying on track over the holidays - and making res-

olutions you can keep all year.

Plan Ahead Don’t arrive hungry. Eat a high protein snack, to give you energy and keep you from overindulging at a party. Snack on hard-boiled eggs, lean lunch meat, low-fat cheese, yogurt or a handful of nuts. Other great options are Herbalife Nutrition’s protein Shakes or Protein Bites, a bite-sized protein bar.

“By focusing on proteins over carbs, slowing your eating pace and making sure you don’t go to the party hungry, you can enjoy yourself and minimize weight gain,” adds Bradley.

Stay Hydrated The body can mistake thirst for hunger, which may lead to overeating. Staying hydrated with plain or sparkling water also helps you feel fuller. Sip on a glass of water

between snacks to slow down and enjoy the day.

Pace Yourself In the survey, 48% admitted they’ve eaten so much during the holidays, they had to undo the button on their pants or loosen their belt, and 45% have eaten more than one of the same meal in a day - such as multiple lunches or dinners.

Others said they’ve eaten until they feel sick, unwell or full to bursting - or they deliberately wore stretchy clothes to accommodate overeating (both 39%).

If you’re hosting a gathering, start a holiday singalong, set up a fun craft or suggest a walk outside.

If you’re at someone else’s shindig, take breaks from eating treats by talking to people or playing games.

Food doesn’t have to be the centerpiece of every get-together.

Make Your Resolutions Count In the survey, 2/3 of respondents (64%) said they’re actively delaying attempts to be healthy over the holidays - and of those, 56% said they’ll begin postponing their wellness efforts by mid-November. But many said they’ll pick healthy habits back up in the New Year. The study found that 39% plan to make a New Year’s resolution for 2022.

The top goal? Exercising more (27%), followed by eating healthier

(25%) and focusing on self-care (22%).

Make your resolutions concrete, realistic and attainable - so you can keep them well past January.

“The most successful New Year’s health resolutions combine nutritious balanced diets and exercise, have specific, achievable goals and activate a community of likeminded supportive people,” added Bradley.

Here’s how to make effective New Year’s resolutions: * Make them simple and concrete: “30 minutes of exercise per day” or “Add 1 vegetable to meals,” for example. If you’re starting an exercise program, check with your doctor first. * Don’t overload yourself: Start with only 1-2 goals, or you can feel overwhelmed. * Use the buddy system: Find a friend or group of like-minded people to support you and help keep each other accountable.

Don’t give up on your wellness before New Year’s, and use resolutions to focus on small, reachable goals, so you can build on that success all year long.

Ways to protect your holiday budget (StatePoint) It may be the season of cheer, but for many, the holidays are rife with anxiety about expenses. A recent survey shows that staying on budget is Americans’ top concern this holiday season, followed by incurring longterm debt, shipping costs and being charged late or hidden fees.

Here are five tips to protect your holiday budget: 1. Set a spending cap with friends and family. Americans plan to spend $998 on gifts this holiday season, according to the National Retail Federation. ‘Tis the season for giving, but make sure you don’t overspend. Know your budget up front and communicate that with loved ones.

Another idea to limit spending is to put everyone’s name into a hat.

Each person draws one name and buys a gift for just the person they selected. You can add a bit of intrigue by keeping the identity of your recipient a secret until you open gifts!

2. Take advantage of deal days.

Timing is everything for getting the best prices. Do your homework in advance to pay significantly less. The typical big sales days include Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which offers online deals focused on clothing and travel. Plus, Super Saturday before Christmas is great for lastminute gifts.

3. Purchase gift cards with peace of mind. Gift cards are a popular, convenient gift, but some would-be buyers may hesitate to purchase them out of fear that the business may end up closing, especially those still struggling during the ongoing pandemic. Erie Insurance is taking away that concern with gift card reimbursement coverage, which is provided to certain eligible homeowners at no additional charge. The coverage provides reimbursement for up to $250 per gift card at local businesses within 100 miles of a customer’s home if the business permanently closes within a year after purchase. Reimbursement coverage is limited to $500 per policy period.

4. Track when products are discounted with a browser extension. Do you want the best deals but don’t have the time to spend searching for them? There are extensions you can download on web browsers that will compare prices and even apply the best coupon codes at checkout.

5. Use credit card rewards.

You’ve earned those points throughout the year and now is a great time to cash them in. The simplest way to use points is for gift cards, as it’s one of the top requested gifts and there are many categories to choose from, including restaurants, clothing and grocery stores. Another option is to take advantage of the money saved from a statement credit to cover the expense of holiday gifts.

You can enjoy festive foods if you plan ahead for holiday events, and make dishes that aren’t loaded with carbs and sugar - but still satisfy your cravings.

“It’s easy to throw your wellness goals out the window during the season, thinking you can make up for it later,” said Colette Heimowitz, vice president, Nutrition & Education, Simply Good Foods.

“But with a few smart choices, you can celebrate the season without jeopardizing your nutrition goals.”

Here are some tips - and recipes - to help you indulge more thoughtfully this year.

Prep for healthier holiday gatherings When you know you’ll be celebrating at an event chock full of carbs and sweets, plan ahead. * Keep your energy up while prepping for holiday get-togethers by enjoying an Atkins Vanilla Latte Iced Coffee Protein Shake, with 15 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar and as much caffeine as a

cup of coffee. * Don’t arrive at a party famished so you’re less tempted to overindulge. Eat a small lowcarbohydrate meal beforehand, like salmon and salad with olive oil dressing or veggies and guacamole, to stabilize your appetite and blood sugar level. * Don’t linger near the food table. But if you are planning to partake in the buffet, opt for protein, veggies, dips, nuts and cheese. * Drink plenty of water.

Thirst is often mistaken for hunger, so staying hydrated helps you avoid overeating. Flavor up your water with lemon, lime or cucumber slices.

Look for keto-friendly recipes to grace your holiday table Try these tasty, low-carb recipes developed by an Atkins nutritionist to share at holiday gatherings - or just enjoy between festivities.

Keto Cranberry Shortbread Cookies These delectable cookies blend the tangy sweetness of cranberries, a hint of almond and an orange zest icing - and may become your new holiday favorite.

Prep time: 260 minutes (20

minutes prep; 4 hours in refrigerator); Cook time: 12 minutes Ingredients 1/3 cup cranberries (fresh or frozen) 2 tablespoons water, divided 2 tablespoons Truvia Sweet

Complete 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temperature) 1/3 cup Truvia (erythritol-stevia blend) 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon almond extract 1 cup blanched almond flour 1/4 teaspoon xanthan gum 1/4 cup confectioners erythritol 1/2 tablespoon orange zest Instructions 1. In small saucepan over me-

dium heat, bring cranberries, 1 tablespoon water and 2 tablespoons Truvia to a simmer. Cook until cranberries pop - about 10 minutes from fresh or 15 minutes from frozen. Set aside to cool.

2. In bowl of stand mixer, cream together room temperature butter and 1/3 cup Truvia until lightened and fluffy. Add vanilla extract, almond extract and cranberries, mixing until well combined.

Add sifted almond flour and xanthan, mixing on low until just combined.

Create 6-inch-long log of dough on sheet of parchment paper or plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator at least 4 hours, until very solid.

Cookies will spread significantly if not chilled adequately.

3. Heat oven to 350 F and prepare baking sheet with parchment paper. Cut cold dough into 12, 1/2inch thick rounds and place on baking sheet, cut side down.

Bake 11-13 minutes until bottom edges are golden brown.

Watch closely the last few minutes to ensure cookies don’t burn.

Cool on baking sheet 5 minutes,

then gently place on cooling rack and cool completely, about 30 minutes. These cookies will be very crumbly until completely cooled.

4. While cookies cool, in small bowl, use fork to combine confectioners erythritol and water to form paste. Dip (or drizzle) cooled cookies in icing, applying about 4 grams icing per cookie. Sprinkle icing with orange zest and allow icing to set.

Store in airtight container at room temperature up to 5 days, or in freezer up to 3 months.

Makes 12 servings. One iced cookie is one serving.

Low-Carb Warm Brussels Sprouts Salad with Hazelnuts This quick and easy salad takes 15 minutes to make. I get asked these questions often. Everyone can get a COVID-19 vaccine for free. While the vaccine is free to everyone, providers such as pharmacies, health departments, doctors, and hospitals are required to bill various insurance plans for an administration fee to cover the cost of providing the injection. Pro-

viders are reimbursed by Medicare, Medicaid, or traditional insurance for administering the vaccine. If you do not have insurance, it is still free because the federal government pays providers for administering vaccine to all uninsured people.

When going for your vaccination, please bring your ID, and all insurance cards. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

If you are over the age of 65, please bring your paper “Red White & Blue” traditional Medicare card. Medicaid patients should provide their traditional

blue Medicaid card. Medicaid and Medicare managed care companies do not pay providers.

All these requirements can be confusing, so it is best thing to bring all your insurance cards and the provider can choose the ones that are needed. If you have lost or misplaced your original Medicare card; call (800) MEDICARE, (800) 633-4227, and they will provide your number over the phone and issue a new card.

If you have received a previous covid vaccination, please bring your proof of vaccination card.

NRCS invests dollars in partnership to restore wetlands The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service in Indiana is investing up to $3.5 million in a Wetland Reserve Enhancement Partnership project to bring together partners and landowners to voluntarily return critical wetland functions to agricultural landscapes.

This project provides assistance to all eligible landowners in Indiana and Illinois, with an emphasis on historically underserved farmers. This partnership is part of USDA’s broader efforts to mitigate climate change by restoring wetlands while also prioritizing assistance to underserved communities. Applications are taken on a continuous basis, but they must be received on or before Jan. 18 for the current funding period.

Restoring wetland ecosystems help filter sediments and chemicals to improve water quality downstream, enhance wildlife and aquatic habitat, reduce impacts from flooding, recharge groundwater and offers recreational benefits. Wetlands may also serve as carbon sinks by sequestering and storing carbon from the atmosphere, an ecosystem function that supports climate change mitigation across private lands.

“Wetland protection and restoration is a key component of our strategy to address climate change, and partnerships are essential to this work,” Indiana Natural Resources Conservation Service State Conservationist Jerry Raynor said. “This year, we focused our investment on a project that supports historically underserved landowners, who we know face significant barriers in accessing USDA assistance for conservation. Our partners provide a direct link to these communities, and these projects will expand conservation opportunities.”

The Lower Wabash River & White River Oxbow project, led by the Nature Conservancy, seeks to enroll 1,000 acres into wetland easements in parts of Knox, Gibson and Posey counties in Indiana

and Gallatin, White, Edwards and Wabash counties in Illinois.

This project aims to build on existing efforts of local partnerships between Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Nature Conservancy and the Conservation Law Center to enroll historically underserved landowners in areas like Lyle’s Station, which was settled in the early 1800s and is one of the last remaining Black-American settlements in the state. The project focus is to reduce nutrient export from the Wabash River and to improve important habitat around priority oxbow lakes for monarch butterflies, migratory birds and large river fish species.

Wetland Reserve Enhancement Partnership is part of the Wetland Reserve Easement component of the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program. Wetland Reserve Enhancement Partnership enables local conservation partners to provide their leadership and expertise to assist Natural Resources Conservation Service with acquiring and restoring private wetlands that have been previously altered for agricultural production, through targeting project areas and providing services to accomplish shared objectives in those areas.

Wetland Reserve Enhancement Partnership applications may be submitted at any time to Natural Resources Conservation Service; however, applications for the current funding round must be submitted on or before the closing

date, Jan. 18.

Auditions upcoming for Wagon Wheel Junior show The Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts announced open auditions for youth/teens for its upcoming Wagon Wheel Junior winter musical.

Auditions will be Saturday, Dec. 18, at the theatre’s lobby, 2515 E. Center St., Warsaw. Kids ages 9-11 will audition at 10 a.m. and ages 12-18 at 11:30 a.m.

The title of the musical will be announced following auditions.

Kids don’t need to prepare anything for the audition; they will

learn a short part of a song when they arrive.

Rehearsal times are after school on weekdays (typically from 5-8:30 p.m.) and all day on weekends. Performance dates are 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, and Saturday, Feb. 5, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6.

Due to the time constraints of putting on a production, multiple conflicts won’t be accommodated.

Mandatory rehearsals are Thurs-

day, Jan. 20, and Friday, Jan. 21, and tech week is Monday, Jan. 31, through Thursday, Feb. 3. Performance days are mandatory.

The Senate Page Program will begin in January and run through early March. Positions fill quickly, so it is important to apply early.

Pages are scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during the legislative session.

They begin their day at 8:30 a.m. and are dismissed at 3:30 p.m.

Groups serve together Wednesdays.

Owner Keitha Kunkle is bringing lake life fashion and accessories to the Rochester community through the quaint shop.

Kunkle and her husband have been long time visitors to Lake Manitou and fell in love with the area. Their decision was to

make Rochester their home after retirement. They have been living at the lake full time since last year. Retirement for Kunkle didn’t last long when she and her husband purchased the building, previously known as Story Landing, and thought a lake themed boutique sounded like a fun opportunity to stay busy.

Living on the lake herself was the motivation behind the premise of the shop; “Catering to neighbors, visitors and friends; just everyone that enjoys it

here,” stated Kunkle. Through the store, shoppers can find not only clothing items but key chains, coasters, tumblers, beach bags and so much more. Personally, she loves shopping, so she joked this is more fun than work.

Drive-thru mobile food pantry at Mill Creek Church Dec. 14 Food Finders Food Bank Mobile Pantry will be distributing food, including fresh produce, an assortment of frozen items, essential non-perishable items and breads to people in need in the Rochester area. • Avoid plastic mailboxes if possible. Some tend to shatter in cold temperatures.

If your mailbox is continually damaged or knocked down, consider changing the location, even if just by a few feet.
