raise awareness of homelessness

On Nov. 17, in a rare show of bipartisanship, the United States Senate passed a resolution designating November as National Homeless Children and Youth Awareness Month.

The announcement coincided with Rochester High School juniors’ American Studies unit on the Great Depression, taught by U.S. History teacher Jesse Atkinson and English Teacher Hope Showley, and featuring texts including “Of Mice and Men,” by John Steinbeck, a 1937 novel about displaced migrant farm workers looking for work in California.

“Migrant workers were not living lives with a lot of stability,” said Atkinson. This time in history provided a lens though which to study homelessness, said Atkinson. The students also heard a presentation by Virga Smith, who helped found

Business development director feels at home in a medical facility

“I was introduced to the medical field as a child,” stated Amber Basham, Rochester. “My mother was in the radiology department of a hospital. My dad worked nights. When Mom was on call at night, my brother and I spent the night at the hospital. The medical personnel took us under their wing.

Sometimes we had wheelchair races. Other times we got to ride on a gurney. Through it all, I became very aware of people who are sick and in need. I’m one of the few people who feels at home when I experience the sights and smells of a medical facility.”

Basham has been the business development director of Life Care Center, Rochester, for over two years. But her history goes back even further than that. She graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington, with a degree in recreational therapy.

“I was an activity director at

LCC for 10 years. Then I worked as a pharmacy technician at Webb’s Family Pharmacy, but now I’m back and loving it.”

As a business development director, Basham touches base with many people. “I’m in charge of marketing and admissions for the facility. I’m the contact person for hospitals, doctors, nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

We are a skilled nursing facility that accepts long-term care patients and short-term rehab patients. We have respite care for families that may want a break as caregivers for short periods of time. We offer outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy.”

Basham is often on the move.

“When I get referrals from hospitals or nursing homes, I’ll visit the patient and make an assessment. I’m really the liaison between the family and the medical facility.”

Many times, families and future residents will want to tour the facility. “I take them through.

I believe there’s a special spirit at LCC. Staff members love the residents and it shows.”

Basham sees more and more younger people staying temporarily at LCC. “They have to be over 18 years old to qualify for therapy here. We get many 40- to 50-year-olds who have had knee or hip replacements. Our goal is to get them ready for life at home.”

One of her challenges is working through the ever-changing world of insurance companies. “Our No. 1 priority is to meet everyone’s needs.”

Daily contact with the residents makes them her extended family members. “We grieve along with the family when a resident passes away.”

Her office is right by the front door. “I have candy in a basket on my desk. I welcome visits from residents and staff members alike. One of our dementia patients likes to sit on our front couch. I’ll sneak her a piece of chocolate every once in a while.”

When asked if she misses being an activity director, she remarked, “I still get to help with events. If we have music, I’ll dance with some of the residents. During our Veteran’s Day celebration, I watched our veterans receive plaques. Many of the men kissed those plaques and we all cried together.”

Basham concluded, “I enjoy the family atmosphere here. I love spending the holidays with residents and staff members.”

Walk right this way, cookie lovers

If you’re a smart cookie, you’ll arrive early this year to the Community Cookie Walk because arriving too late carries one distinct risk: The only thing left might be crumbs.

Doors open at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at Community Presbyterian Church, corner of Sixth and Jefferson streets, Rochester. The cookie sale runs until noon, but last year pickings were “slim” by 10:30 a.m. and everything was sold out by 11:30 a.m., said Ashley Chipps, who is the church’s mission and outreach coordinator that organizes the Cookie Walk.

“We were really happy with the turnout and the support we received from the community last year,” Chipps said.

The church raised $1,010.00 and all proceeds were donated to the children’s backpack food program at Rochester Community Schools.

This year, the church will give its Cookie Walk money to the outreach program of United Ministries of Fulton County, which helps local families in need pay for rent, utilities and medicine.

The Rev. David Smook, president of the board for United Ministries, is already grateful for the expected financial gift.

Earlier in November, United Ministries, which relies strictly on donations, had to suspend accepting applications for outreach assistance because it had no

money left for that program.

Between $2,000 and $3,000 in donations have come in since then, Smook said last week, but around $10,000 is the target amount needed to restart the program. Smook said the need for rent, utilities and medical assistance is great.

“I’m really glad the community is taking this seriously and trying to help out,” Smook said. Events like the Cookie Walk, he said, can be a “big help.”

Community Presbyterian held an annual Christmas cookie walk for 17 years before the event was put on hold for a few years. Last year it was revived, and community response was strong because of the hiatus, according to Chipps.

Fulton County Hope for Homelessness in 2019.

As part of the unit, all three junior American Studies classes took part in a “Hooverville reenactment,” referring to the shantytowns built by homeless persons during the Depression. Approximately 90 students spent the morning of Nov. 22 on the lawn in front of the Fulton County Courthouse, where they took turns displaying signs on which were written statistics on modern homelessness in Fulton County and Indiana they learned from Smith and their own research.

Lindsay Barts of Ladybug Foundation, which last spring took part in art projects addressing mental health in area schools, was impressed with the students’ efforts. “We helped organize things and then they took it from there.”

One statistic hitting close to home was the fact that roughly 20,000 students in Indiana lacked adequate housing at one time or another during the year. This includes students sharing the housing of others due to loss of housing or economic hardship, living in motels, hotels, trailer parks or campgrounds due to lack of alternative accommodations; living in emergency or transitional shelters or are abandoned in hospitals. It does not include children waiting for foster care.

Rochester High School student Avery Brouyette held a sign reporting 2,655 Indiana youth are homeless.

“There’s more homelessness around Fulton County than people think,” said RHS junior Wesley Steininger, noting 9% of the population meets the description.

“It’s shocking to see how many

people are actually struggling in this county that you don’t see,” said another student, Lily Watson.

Studying homelessness also shed a light on related issues. Watson was surprised to learn about the number of teachers who must hold down more than one job to support their families.

Another surprise for the students was the number of homeless military veterans in Indiana, 530 according to recent studies.

“There’s all kinds of reasons someone might find themselves homeless,” said Showley. “A lot of kids in smaller communities like ours just think of it as being in huge cities.”

In addition to raising awareness about homelessness, the students learned about efforts to address the problem. Steininger noted they had been able to direct at least one passerby to Fulton County Hope for Homelessness, where they may get help.

In fact, according to Smith, the organization has helped 325 people find housing in the last two years, many of them escaping abusive situations, often with children, “with maybe two bags of things and that’s it,” she said.

In order for Smith to arrange for

Church families donate all of the ingredients, labor and supplies for the Cookie Walk, Chipps said. Last year, a dozen church members each baked between six to eight dozen cookies.

That sounds like a lot, but they went fast.

“Some people like to make this a tradition,” Chipps said about the Cookie Walk. Last year, “We had people waiting at the door at 9 a.m.”

housing, which includes a security deposit and first month’s rent, recipients must be on social security or have a job, to ensure they can meet the next month’s rent.

“I don’t want to set them up for failure again,” she explained. “It’s traumatic for kids to leave, and I don’t want them to have to go back through the same situation.”

Smith is also involved with St. John Lutheran Church’s Helping Hands Food Pantry, which collects home furnishings. While it’s great she can provide shelter, Smith said, “I need help to be able to furnish the home.” This may include furniture, bedding and toys for children.

In fact, Smith was unable to attend the Hooverville reenactment because she had received a call from a woman in an abusive situation. “I can’t say ‘I can’t talk to you right now.’”

“I get asked, ‘why do you want to deal with these people?’ … Because that’s the kind of people Jesus went with. I don’t see them as ‘those people.’”

Tom Migonis

Tom Migonis, 80, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022, at his home with his wife Sandi at his side.

Born on April 18, 1942, in Chicago, Thomas was the first-born son of George B. and Josephine Rouden Migonis. Growing up he shared his childhood with two brothers. After high school, Tom served our country with the United States Army. As a careerman, he served multiple tours of duty, that spanned over two decades in Korea, Germany and Vietnam. At the time of his honorable discharge, he was known as 1st Sgt. Tom Migonis.

On April 21, 1997, Tom married Sandi in Booneville, Ky. Together they shared 25 years together. A man of strong faith, Tom was very active at the Gospel Lighthouse Church. He was especially dedicated to mentoring Celebrate Recovery. With a servant’s heart, Tom served our veterans as the district commander of the Veterans of Foreign War. He was past commander of the Leroy Shelton American Legion Post No. 36 and was a member of the Fulton County Veteran’s Honor Guard.

At home there was no better way to relax than chopping wood. In the spring, Tom could be found on his tractor doing custom work for friends and neighbors, prepping their garden plots for planting. A lifelong American patriot, Tom kept a watchful eye on our flags around the county. Keenly observing for their pristine appearance. If not, he politely mentioned that he could help them with proper disposition of our symbol of America.

An avid gardener, Tom planted a truck patch garden. Some years containing over 50 tomato plants, of course there was always an abundance of cabbage, green beans and a variety of peppers. He enjoyed visits from his grands. Jeffrey Jr. and companion Bri, Alicia and husband Sean, Amanda and husband Kevin loved to hear stories from earlier years and the patriotism of their Grandpa Tom. They went on nature hikes with him, exploring the back woods while catching glimpses of wildlife. He conducted many tours of his prized garden, always sharing the bountiful harvest with them.

Left to cherish Tom’s memory are his wife, Sandi; four children, Christine Calvert of Rochester, Toni Walker of Galveston, Kimmy Gard of Macy and Jeff Ferrell Sr. and wife Ellen of Rochester; 15 grandchildren; 19 greatgrandchildren; and his canine companion, Millie the English Mastiff.

A celebration of life will be announced later. Burial will follow at the Arlington National Cemetery. The United States Army Honors Team will accord military honors.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Delong Gospel Lighthouse Church, 5823 Center St., P.O. Box 440, Delong, IN 46922.

The Good Family Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. Online expressions of sympathy may be made to his family at www.goodfamilyfh.com.

As of Wednesday, Nov. 23, FCAC dog kennels were full and the center is in need of more adoptions. To get a good

look and descriptions, go to petfinder.com/search/pets-foradoption/?shelter_id%5B0%5D =IN567&sort%5B0%5D=recent ly_added.

All dogs are spayed/neutered, on monthly preventatives and current on vaccines.

Dog meet and greets and adoptions are by appointment. Please submit an application online at fultoncoanimalcenter.org/application-to-adopt.

Once submitted FCAC staff will review and then contact you to set up a meet and greet. If it’s a match, you can take the dog home on the same day. Any other dogs in the home must come to the meet and greet at FCAC also.

FCAC currently has 30 cats and kittens available for adoption as of Nov. 23.

FCAC allows walk-ins for kitten/cat adoptions, but they highly recommend submitting an application ahead of time to streamline the adoption process. Please allow for extra time and

To get pre-approved to adopt submit an application at fultoncoanimalcenter.org/apply-toadopt-a-cat.

The kitten/cat you select on your application does not have to be the one you adopt. You can meet other cats and see who you fall in with. To see available kittens/cats go to petfinder.com/ search/pets-for-adoption/.

Remember to bring a cat carrier. If you don’t have one, FCAC has cardboard carriers available to purchase for an additional $5. All kitties must leave FCAC in a secure carrier.

FCAC also offers a two-week “Foster with Intent to Adopt Program” which allows up to two weeks to make sure your feline choice is a great fit for your home before finalizing your adoption.

Outlet Youth Center hosts Thanksgiving dinner

On Nov. 22, The Outlet Youth Center hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for all attending students and families, volunteers and board members. 65 people attended the event at 491 Apache Drive.

“It was such a cool experience to watch our students take pride in the space and share it with their families. They introduced them to our volunteers, and we got to meet so many parents we hadn’t yet been able to meet. It was the first time we were really able to bring the entire ‘family’ together,” said Taylor Showley, assistant director at The Outlet. The Outlet was closed the remainder of Thanksgiving week but reopened on Tuesday, Nov. 29, for the After School Program open from 3-5:30 p.m. to students in sixth through 12th grade.

Hope for the future

(Read: Phillippians 3:17-21)

“For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20)

If you were moving to a new home, you would want to know all about the community to which you are going. And since we will spend

Let’s study the Bible

eternity some place, we ought to know something about it. The information concerning heaven is found in the Bible. When we talk about heaven, earth grows dilapidated by comparison. Our problems and sorrows here

seem so much less, when we have a clear anticipation of the future. Nothing will keep our minds spiritual more than looking for the coming of Christ; but “watch out for the worldly crowd,” Paul warns his readers. He expresses here great sorrow in a letter filled otherwise with joy. Paul is weeping over the professed Christians whose lives were bearing the fruit of worldlymindedness. He describes them: (1) they mind earthly things, which means they think only of this world and what it has to offer; (2) they live for the flesh, for their god is their stomach; and (3) their end is destruction. These people are the enemies of the cross of Christ. The cross defeated the world and the flesh; the cross speaks of sacrifice and suffering, yet these people live for the world and seek only to please themselves. What an awful

thing, to be an enemy of the cross, yet a professed Christian.

Our citizenship (“conversation”) is in heaven (Philippians 3:20).

When people become members of God’s family, their names are written down in heaven (Luke 10:20).

They become citizens of heaven. This means they live for the glory of heaven and not for the praise of this earth. Citizens should honor their own countries, and surely the Christian will honor heaven. The people in Philippi were not governed by Macedonian laws, but by Roman laws; likewise, the church lives by heaven’s laws. Philippi was a colony of Rome in Macedonia, and Christians make up a colony of heaven on earth. Many times, the laws of heaven conflict with the laws of earth, but our responsibility is to obey God, not men.

What a blessed future the citizen of heaven has. Paul proclaims, “We shall be like him.” Our humble body will be changed to be like his glorious body. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 to see what a happy event the return of Christ will be for the saint. Of course, this will be a day of resurrection and reunion, but it will also be a day of reckoning and reward. May we be found faithful to him and not ashamed at his coming (1 John 2:28-3:3).

A Christian has peace of conscience, peace of soul, and peace with God. In the midst of troubles and difficulties he has a spring in his step, a joy in his soul, a smile on his face and a home in heaven for all eternity.
