Salvation Army bell ringing starts in Fulton County Text and Photos

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer A Christmas staple has returned to Fulton County for the 2023 holiday season.

Bell ringing for The Salvation Army started Friday, Nov. 24, and runs through Saturday, Dec. 23.

People may sign up at registertoring.com for two-hour shifts or by calling Pastor David Smook at (574) 343-0568 or Pastor Mark Spencer at (574) 835-3613.

Burton-Richland Center United Methodist Church Pastor Steve Hartman is in his second year of serving as the chair for The Salvation Army in Fulton County.

He said bell ringing locations include Walmart, Kroger, Smith Farm Store and R.P. Home and Harvest in Rochester. Days are Monday through Saturday, with the exception of Smith Farm Continued on page 3

Wellness coordinator combines training in exercise science with love for senior citizens

By LAURIE LECHLITNER Staff Writer “I graduated from Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science,” stated Taylor Boyd, the lifestyle wellness coordinator at Wynnfield Crossing in Rochester.

“Actually, I work for Aegis Therapies. We contract work to different health care facilities. I love the fact that I can use my training in exercise science and my affection for seniors in my present job,” she said.

Boyd creates programming in seven different areas: emotional, environmental, intellectual, occupational, physical, social and spiritual.

“My goal is to create an atmosphere of progress in all seven of these areas of wellness,” Boyd said.

For example, in the intellectual area are a variety of activities that stimulate the brain.

“Since Wynnfield Crossing is an assisted living community and not a nursing home, our seniors are a bit more independent. I’ll give them brain games, puzzles and trivia questions. Stimulating the brain helps prevent early onset dementia,” said Boyd.

Of course, the spiritual aspect ties in with the church services offered at the facility.

“We also have two churches that supply Bible studies each week,” she said.

The occupational area required Boyd to do a little research.

“I listened to find out the jobs many of our residents had done in their lives. I found that most of them were either teachers or farmers. We have one resident who was a teacher,” said Boyd.

“So, when Columbus Day rolled around in October, we studied the history of the holiday. For fun, we had makeshift boat races, using ice cubes with construction paper sails attached.

The starting line was the head of a long table. Residents were instructed to take their drinking straws and blow the ‘boat’ down the table to the finish line.”

For the golfers, Boyd constructed an inside mini golf course.

“It was for Halloween, so residents were instructed to hit their ball into a shoe box at the end of each lane; however, we had spooky obstacles in the ball’s path,” said Boyd.

Boyd has been in her position for a year and a half. She is also busy earning a master’s degree in health care administration and leadership from Saginaw Valley. She is a very busy young lady.

This past Oct. 30, Boyd flew to Anaheim, Calif., with a national director of Aegis.

“I presented a seven-week nutritional program that was accepted by the International Council on Active Aging back in April. I presented it at their conference in Anaheim,” said Boyd.

“I worked at a nursing home right out of high school. And I’ve discovered that senior citizens often prefer junk food to healthy eating,” said Boyd.

She admits she’s not going to argue with a 90-year-old who’s a junk-food junkie “But I do want to supply seniors with the educational tools to make wise choices.

For example, junk food has an inflammatory response in our bodies. Those with joint problems can help themselves by substituting some of the junk food for healthful alternatives, like fruit. It will help them feel better and give them more energy,” she said.

Boyd is engaged to Clayton McCarthy, who is working on his doctor of physical therapy at Indiana Wesleyan University. She lives in Wabash.

Boyd concluded, “I love hearing the residents’ stories. And they are never too busy to stop and listen to my own stories.”

Though believers endure suffering now, they will enjoy glory when Christ returns. In fact, the whole creation (“creature” in verses 19-21) is groaning under the bondage of sin, because of Adam’s disobedience.

When Christ finally imprisons Satan, he will deliver the entire creation from this bondage, and all nature will enjoy with us “the glorious liberty of the children of God” (verse 21).

What a thrilling salvation we have: free from the penalty of

sin because Christ died for us (chapter 5); free from the power of sin because we died with Christ to the flesh (chapter 6) and to the Law (chapter 7); and someday we shall be free from the very presence of sin when nature is delivered from bondage.

We have the spirit of adoption, but we are “waiting for the adoption, that is, the redemption of the body” (verse 23). The soul has been redeemed, but not the body. We wait in hope, however, because the indwelling spirit is given as “the first fruits” of the deliverance God has for us in the future. Even if we die, the spirit who has sealed us unto the day of redemption (Ephesians 1:13-14) will raise our body to life (verse 11).

We have the privilege of praying in the Holy Spirit. Perhaps too much of our praying is of the flesh — long, beautiful, “pious” prayers that glorify man and nauseate God (Isaiah 1:11-18). Paul indicates the most spiritual prayer could be a wordless groan that comes from the heart! “Sighs too deep for words” is the way one translation renders verse 26.

The Holy Spirit always prays in the will of God. What is the will of God? That believers

might be conformed to the image of Christ (verse 29). We can claim the promise of verse 28 because of the purpose of verse 29. Notice all the verbs in verse 30 are past tense: the believer has been called, justified and glorified. Why faint under the sufferings of this world when we have already been glorified?

We simply wait for the revelation of this glory at the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We might never have had the songs of Fanny Crosby had she not been afflicted with blindness. George Matheson would never have given the world his immortal song, “O Love That Will Not Let Me Go,” had it not been for his passing through the furnace of affliction. The “Hallelujah Chorus” was written by George Frederick Handel when he was poverty-stricken and suffering from a paralysed right side and right arm.

Affliction may be for our edification and Christian development. Sickness is one of the “all things” which work together for good to them that love God. Don’t resent it. Don’t be embittered by it. God loves you!

Hours run from the first shift of 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. through 5 p.m., 6 p.m. or 7 p.m., depending on the location.

People are welcome to ring alone or with school, church groups or clubs. Those at Walmart are encouraged to dress warmly as the bell ringing is outside there.

Of the funds raised, 70% goes back to help those in need in Fulton County, with 10% going for Salvation Army operations costs and 20% to help with disaster relief. Hartman said the disaster relief could come to the county if an event were to happen here.

Social services organization, United Ministries of Fulton County, administers The Salvation Army monies which come into the county, with Smook, the president of United Ministries’ board, mentioning funds help cover rent or house payments, utilities or medication assistance.

“I had a girl come up ... with a $20 bill,” he said. “She said, ‘Well, Salvation Army saved my life ...

I was going from house to house to house to house being shifted around in the system until I got to the Salvation Army, and then your organization placed me in a home that was my forever home and you saved my life.’”

“We’ve had a couple stories like that of people who have said what

Salvation Army’s done,” said Hartman.

Hartman also added the bell ringing is simply “fun.”

“It’s just kind of fun to watch people and their faces as they put the money in ... because they know it’s going to help somebody,” he said.

Obituaries David Charles Leavell Owner Of Leavell Sales

Abraham Lincoln once famously stated, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”

David Charles Leavell was born on April 8, 1951, and peacefully departed on Nov. 18, 2023.

David was born as the youngest child of Pete and Goldys Leavell on April 8, 1951, in DAVID CHARLES Twelve Mile. He pursued his education at CasLEAVELL ton High School and successfully completed his studies as a proud member of the class of 1969. After graduating, he furthered his academic journey at Western New Mexico University in Silver City, N.M. Equipped with knowledge and skills, David embarked on his professional career by joining Diamond Automation, where he excelled in the role of selling chicken equipment. It was during this time that he had the pleasure of encountering his beloved wife, Patricia Leavell. Their affectionate bond led them to unite in marriage on Dec. 20, 1974, after a brief engagement.

Following his marriage in 1974, David embarked on a journey of travel and work with Diamond Automation until the arrival of his son Shane in 1977. Subsequently, David and Pat briefly assumed ownership of the Fulton Lumber Yard, allowing him to devote more time to his family. Soon after, he ventured into the poultry industry alongside his esteemed companion, Ray Blanchet, founding Midwest Agriculture. After several years there, David yearned for the presence of his children at home, prompting him to establish Leavell Construction, catering to the needs of the local community.

In the early ‘90s, he joined Farmer Automatic of America as the national sales manager, commencing a remarkable career spanning over 25 years. Recently retired from Farmer Automatic, David has once again embarked on an independent endeavor, providing services to his cherished long-term customers through Leavell Sales. In this new chapter, he has enlisted the assistance of his trusted and dedicated assistant, Patty Johnson, who will ensure the continuity and success of this enterprise into the future.

A devoted husband, caring father, doting grandfather, trusted mentor and most importantly, our dearest friend, Dad exhibited a profound appreciation for life and embraced it to the fullest extent.

His warm and welcoming nature allowed him to effortlessly connect with others, always extending a helping hand whenever needed.

For countless years, he selflessly dedicated his time and efforts to the local horse and pony club, graciously volunteering and making a positive impact within the community. In his professional endeavors, he consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities, guided by unwavering integrity and a steadfast moral compass. Not only did he raise his own children with unwavering love and care, but he also opened his heart and home to others, bringing them into the family with unconditional love and treating them as if they were his own.

Dad’s influence on our life has been immeasurable. From imparting lessons in independence and the art of working smart, to teaching us the importance of forging meaningful connections and empathizing with others, his wisdom has shaped the people we are today. While acknowledging his imperfections, for no one is flawless, he possessed the admirable ability to recognize and address his shortcomings, continuously striving for personal growth.

His smile and infectious laughter will ring in our ears for years to come.

To his grandchildren, he was an affectionate and cherished grandfather. Despite physical limitations in recent years, he never ceased to shower them with unconditional love, imparting his grandfatherly wisdom and counsel. Although our earthly encounters may cease, his enduring presence will reside within our heart indefinitely. Nevertheless, we cannot help but yearn for our almost daily conversations and the comfort of knowing he’s there if we hop in the car or pick up the phone.

David is preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Goldys Leavell; his sister, Betty Leavell; his brother, Don Leavell; and his father-in-law, Richard Eckert.

He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia; son, Shane Leavell and wife Darla of Kentucky; daughters, Kim Leavell Crawford and husband Brian of Winamac and Heather Leavell of Fort Wayne; brother, Mitchell Leavell and wife Dorothy of Jackson, Miss.; seven grandchildren, Xander Leavell, Liam Leavell, Keisha Troutman and husband Ryan, Bryant Brown, Mackenzie Leavell, Adrian Leavell and Ethan Sanders; and four great-grandchildren, Easton Troutman, Wyatt Troutman, Lucas Troutman and Eli Temple; mother-in-law, Darlene Eckert; sister-in-law, Donna Phelan; and brother-in-law, David Yeakley.

The departure of our beloved father signifies not a farewell, but rather a perpetual bond that transcends time itself. His legacy will forever resonate, a testament to a life well-lived and the profound impact he made upon those fortunate enough to have known him.

A celebration of the life of David C. Leavell was at 2 p.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Friends visited with the family from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Edward D. Bigler U.S. Army Veteran

Edward D. Bigler, 93, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023.

Ed was born Sept. 8, 1930, near Lacrosse, to Edward and Ruth (Dutton) Bigler. He had three sisters, Rosemary Krueger, Margaret (Peggy) Simmons and Elizabeth (Bitsy) Darda. Both Rosie and Peggy preceded Ed in death.

EDWARD D. After growing up on a farm in LaPorte County, BIGLER Ed graduated from Portage High School in 1948 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He attended both Purdue and Indiana Universities after his military service.

In Chicago, Ed married Gail Lawler on April 27, 1957. She preceded him to heaven in March of 1983. Ed began his career with TransAmerica Finance in Gary and transferred to Fort Wayne, where he was the branch manager until 1964. That year he and Gail purchased the first of what would be multiple neighborhood bars and restaurants in and around the Fort Wayne area, owning many establishments while also pursuing other endeavors.

He went back into the finance field in 1968, serving as the district sales manager for Economy Finance. He was then the Northern Indiana business development manager for Manpower Inc. until 1972. From 1972 through 1979, Ed was the co-founder and president of Excel Temporary Placement Services in Fort Wayne. During his time in the business world, Ed was active in Kiwanis Club, Fort Wayne Lenders Exchange, the Heart Fund and was sixth district director for the Indiana Licensed Beverage Association.

He was nominated and listed in “Who’s Who in Indiana” in 1974. He came to the Rochester area having purchased the defunct Leiters Ford Tavern with his sons, Tim and Guy. After extensive refurbishing and remodeling, the business reopened in 1983 and the “LFT”, as it was known, was later listed in the Indianapolis Star as “One of the Best Places to Meet and Eat” in towns of less than 5,000 people. Ready to retire once again, Ed and the boys sold the tavern at the end of 1987.

During his time at Leiters Ford, he became acquainted with Patti Eudy and they were companions for over 20 years until her passing in January of 2014. During his time with us, Ed was known as a teller of tales and was always ready to share an interesting story about the many experiences and adventures he had during his long and interesting life.

Ed leaves behind many loved ones, including sons, Tim (Deb), Cypress, Texas, and Guy (Merlee), Rochester; grandchildren, Chase Chappell, Olpe, Kan., Michelle (Craig) Brouyette, Rochester, and Ryan Fall, Fort Wayne; great-grandchildren, Lori Chappell, Olpe, Kan., Dylan Aven and Macy Fall, Fort Wayne, and Evan, Madalyn, Avery and Molly Brouyette, all of Rochester. He was preceded to heaven by grandson, Clay Chappell, Cypress, Texas.

Scott Lawrence Barber, 39, North Manchester, and formerly of Akron, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023.

He was born on Aug. 30, 1984.

Gladys Joyce (Berger) Kolar, 83, Plymouth, and formerly of Argos, died at 3:25 p.m. Nov. 17, 2023, in Autumn Trace Senior Living, Plymouth.

She was born on March 8, 1940. On GLADYS JOYCE KOLAR Sept. 27, 1958, she married Richard Andrew Kolar; who preceded her in death.

She is survived by three daughters, Cindy Rhoads, and Jackie (Steve) Mullaney, both of Valdosta Ga., and Pamela (Brian) Shippy, Rochester; one son, Dean (Lynn) Kolar, Argos; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Obituaries Anita A. Castleman Retail Supervisor

Anita A. Castleman, 77, Rochester, was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away at 11:58 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, at her home.

On Nov. 9, 1946, Anita Ann Yeazel was born to Wayne Robert and Kathleen J. Perdue Yeazel. Growing up she shared her childhood with four sisters and a brother. In 1964, Anita graduated from Culver High ANITA A. School.

CASTLEMAN On March 22, 1968, Anita and Loyd “Jack” Castleman were married. They shared 54 years of life’s adventures. Sadly, he passed away on July 15, 2022. From their union came four wonderful children, Allen, Kurt, Carmen and Angela. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

As a retail supervisor, Anita worked at Rochester’s 3-D Department Store until they closed. To relax, she read romance mystery authored by Lisa Jackson. Her favorite pastime was bingo, where she could be found many times at Plymouth’s Knights of Columbus playing multiple cards. Anita surrounded her home with flower gardens to add color to the landscape. She annually planted a garden and canned the harvest for winter’s use.

Grandma Anita was very proud to oversee four generations. From her kitchen command post she made peanut brittle and caramel corn while listening to the music of Elvis. In demand were her Christmas cookies, always made with lots of love.

Left to cherish Anita’s memory are two sons, Allen Castleman, Indianapolis, and Kurt Castleman and companion Christina; daughter, Carmen Castleman and companion Tim, all of Rochester; 10 grandchildren, Amber Calvert, Garret Loyd Sommers, Cearra Castleman, Brody Alber and companion Taylor Long, Madison Smith and husband Isaac, Seth Castleman, Riley Alber, Francis Alber and companion Max, Emily Castleman and Brayden Castleman; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Roberta Keller and husband Jim, Monterey, and Karen Sue Chaney and husband Tom, North Manchester; brother Wayne Yeazel Jr. and wife Charleen, Kewanna; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Violet M. Fisher Passionate Farmer

Violet M. “Cricket” Fisher, 87, Rochester, was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away at 5:32 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, at her home.

On Nov. 26, 1936, Violet M Smith was born to Sam C. and Hazel M. Sutton Smith near Tiosa. Growing up as the third born of five of the Smith kids, she shared her childhood with two sisters, Betty and Alice, and two VIOLET M. brothers, Allen and Rich.

FISHER At Rochester’s First Presbyterian Church, Violet and Roy Lee Fisher were married on Dec. 19, 1958. They have shared nearly 65 years of life’s adventures. From their union came two sons. The family tree continued to grow with the blessings of two grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren.

A passionate farmer, Violet could be seen seated on her Farmall - International Harvester tractor, turning the soil in the spring preparing for planting. Her standard apparel included a Dekalb Seed Corn cap with a silk head scarf. She took great joy with helping to run their family’s farming operation.

In the early years, milking 110 head of Holsteins. For a few years, their farm raised feeder cattle then went into hog farming as their primary livestock.

The only event to top the plowing and planting was the harvest itself. Violet and John handled trucking the grain to the elevators while Roy drove the combine and Bill handled the discing.

An esteemed leader in Fulton County government, Violet served as chairman of Fulton County Democrats. She was the longest continuous running chair, passing the torch and retiring in 1988. With a diverse interest level, she was a Fulton County’s bail bondsmen for over three decades.

Gifted with her hands and an eye for aesthetics, Violet was a crafter and created many floral pieces, including flowers for her family’s wedding events.

With the heart of a lion, she was devoted and loyal to her family and friends, always there for them and never let them down.

Left to cherish Violet’s memory are her husband, Roy; a son, John Fisher and wife Lee Ann of Rochester; two grandchildren, Wendy Merrill and husband Jimmy and Nathan Flory and wife Britney; six great-grandchildren, Lukas Clark, Maverick Pyle, Kadyn Merrill, Asher Merrill, Brayson Flory and Kinley Flory; a brother, Allen R. Smith of Akron; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Violet in death are her parents; son, William “Billy” Fisher; two sisters, Alice Gaerte and Betty Little; and brother, Richard L. Smith A celebration of the life of Violet M. “Cricket” Fisher will be at 11 a.m.

Gary W. McGee Passionate Lifetime Farmer

Gary W. McGee, 77, Argos, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at 9:08 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023, at Elkhart General Hospital.

On Dec. 12, 1946, Gary Wayne was born in Wynne, Ark., to Arthur Garfield and Allie Kelso McGee. Growing up he was one of the 10 McGee children that included six sisters and three brothers.

GARY W. MCGEE Gary and Anita Faye Goff were married on Jan. 14, 1966, in Hornersville, Mo. They have shared 57 years of life’s adventures. From their union came three daughters, Marla Faye, Paula Lynn and Valerie Jo. Two more generations have been added to the family tree with blessings of four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

With a strong work ethic, Gary was a group leader at a trailer manufacturing company. A passionate lifetime farmer, he farmed row crops atop his John Deere tractor. His love of the green and yellow initiated his fine collection of John Deere memorabilia. To relax, he enjoyed fishing at the pond in the woods by the house. During hunting season, he was on the lookout for deer and squirrel. Gary was a member of New Life Church of Hamlet.

Left to cherish Gary’s memory are his wife, Faye; two daughters, Paula Cline of Hamlet and Valerie Gross and husband Christian of Argos; four grandchildren, Michele Phillipy, Gary Parker, Brooklyn Mason and Caylee Mason; two great-grandchildren, Camrun Phillipy and Jamie Phillipy; three sisters, Lucille Morgan of Cedar Bluff, Ala., Pat Bonds and husband Earl of Ozark, Ark., and Garnett Orman of Forrest City, Ark. Brenda J. Harrell Retired From Standard Motors

Brenda J. Harrell 76, Rochester, passed away at 12:47 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023, at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne.

She was born Jan. 13, 1947, in Rochester, the daughter of James Fairly “Junior” Hooks Jr. and Rosalee (Cole) Hooks. On Dec. 19, 1965, Brenda married Gerald A. DePoy and they became the parents of two BRENDA J. daughters, Tammy and Melissa. They later divorced.

HARRELL On Feb. 1, 1974, she married Frank L. Harrell Jr. They later divorced.

Brenda had worked for Ristance Products in Argos, eventually becoming Standard Motors, retiring in 2011 after 35 years. After retirement, she became active with the Fulton County Senior Center. She helped answer the phones for Retire Senior Volunteer Program, the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce and volunteered at Woodlawn Hospital. She dedicated herself to helping other seniors by helping them with their household chores, shopping, running errands and driving them to doctors appointments. In 2012, on Valentine’s Day, she was recognized as “Queen” by the Fulton County Senior Center. As someone always on the go, she along with her fiancee’, Sam Halliburton, enjoyed taking trips and traveling across the country. She had been a member of Faith Outreach Center.

Survivors include her daughters, Tammy (Jack “Bill”) Utter, Akron, and Melissa (DePoy) Artist, Rochester; grandchildren, Brandi Utter, Argos, Allen Morgan, Plymouth, Cody (Shay) Utter, Athens, Derrick Morgan, Rochester, and Jack Utter Jr., Rochester; great-grandchildren, Bruce, Skilee, Jeff and Sam Utter and Rylee Jonas; nephew, Chris (Kelli) Hooks, Rochester; and several cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, James Kenneth Hooks; and fiancee’, Sam Halliburton.

Funeral services were conducted at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester. Friends visited from 4-6 p.m.

Joshua David Beery, 51, North Manchester, died at 8:26 p.m.

W e d n e s d a y, Nov. 22, 2023, in his residence.

He was born on July 8, 1972, in Warsaw. On May 20, 2006, JOSHUA DAVID BEERY he married Heather Beth Foust; who survives.

Additional survivors are his children, Jackson (Ally) Beery, Indianapolis, and Melanie (Payton) Ensor, North Carolina; parents, Paul and Kathie Beery, Claypool; siblings, Scott (Beverly) Beery, Missouri, Lisa Miller, Akron, and Lee Beery, Claypool; several nieces and nephews; motherin-law, Linda Griffis, Mentone; and Ranger, his Doberman.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; and brother-in-law, Chris Griffis.

A memorial visitation is being planned for a future date.

Tilden-Geiger resigns from Valley PR role for new job

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Lori Tilden-Geiger has opted to resign from her Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. public relations role for a new job.

At its regular board meeting Monday, Nov. 20, the TVSC Board accepted her resignation.

Tilden-Geiger, who co-owns The Grounded Coffee House at The Depot in Akron with her husband, DeLynn Geiger, is taking on the part-

time role of volunteer coordinator for the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum.

Before the board accepted Tilden-Geiger’s resignation, several people spoke, thanking her for the work she’d done as the TVSC director of marketing, public relations and grants.

One of them was Board Member Tom Bauters, who thanked her for helping the corporation get money for projects through grants and mentioned as head of public relations she was “the first friendly face” people would meet.

“She’s made such a big difference for our school corporation,” he said.

“No one cares more about Valley than you,” said TVSC Superintendent Blaine Conley.

Tilden-Geiger thanked the board for its “trust and support,” mentioning she was “proud of” what she and the corporation had been able to do “over the past five and a half years.”

No announcement was made at the meeting regarding Tilden-Geiger’s replacement.

In other business, the board accepted a $300 anonymous donation for Burket Educational Center.

The board’s next regular meeting is 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18, at Mentone Elementary School.

Amezquita, Sanchez, Sanders winners in DYW competitions Breana Amezquita, Emily Sanchez and Allie Sanders are the winners of the recent Distinguished Young Women competitions of Fulton County, Cass County and Pulaski County respectively.

The competitions were held Nov. 18 and 19 at Caston High School.

Each of the three won $1,000 scholarships. Amezquita attends Caston, Sanchez goes to Logansport High School and Sanders is a student at West Central High School.

Additionally for Fulton County, first runner-up was Caston student Alexa Finke, who won a $750 scholarship; and second runner-up was Caston student Macee Hinderlider, who received a $500 scholarship.

Amezquita also got $750 extra in scholarship money for winning the interview, self-expression and talent categories. Finke received an additional $1,000 in scholarship money for winning the “Be Your Best Self” essay, spirit, scho-

lastic and fitness categories. Contestant Kaylee DeSonia of Rochester High School was the winner of the “We Got The POWER” award, getting $100 in scholarship money.

For Cass County, the first runner-up was Caston student Jullina Sherrick, who received $750 in scholarship funds, with second runner-up Logansport student Aimee Martinez, getting $500 of scholarship money.

Sanchez also won the interview and fitness categories, receiving $500 more in scholarship funds.

Sherrick won the self-expression category, gaining $250 additionally for college money.

Martinez also won $500 in scholarship money for winning the spirit and talent categories.

Caston student Haley Logan won $500 in scholarship funds for taking the “Be Your Best Self” essay and scholastic categories, and Logansport student Alejandra Zamora-Arias got $100 in scholarship money by winning the “We Got The POWER” award.

In the Pulaski County competition, West Central student Alexa Schultz got first runner-up, winning a $750 scholarship; and Winamac High School student Destini Gould received second runner-up, getting a $500 scholarship.

The Fulton County Community Foundation’s Ambassador’s Club granted $2,000 to Recovery Cafe, a local organization focused on providing support and resources for individuals in addiction recovery. Recovery Cafe programming includes weekly recovery circles and small groups, social events, free meals, life skills training, and a mental health specialist staff member.

“Being in a small town sometimes feels limiting,” said Recovery Café Executive Director Pat Brown.

“But not when it comes to care and support. The Ambassadors at the Northern Indiana Community Foundation are such a blessing.

“They know us, they see us, they talk with us, and they help us.”

The Ambassador’s Club, made up of former foundation board members, meets twice a year to award grants to worthy causes in Fulton County. Like many grants, funds for Ambassador’s Club awards come from community funds, which are used to make grants meeting the current local needs.

To help grow community grant funds, the Fulton County Service Committee Legacy Fund was established by current and former members during Lilly Endowment, Inc. Give Indiana Funds for Tomorrow program.

There is currently an opportunity through Lilly Endowment for donors to help grow community funds. All gifts to community funds are being matched by $2 for every $1 donated.

Other examples of project and organization grants by community

funds include the Rochester Splash 221 Rouch Place Dr. Rochester, In 46975 Pad, Lucas Devices for fire departments, new dugouts and fencing for local ball diamonds, a generator for the Kewanna Food Pantry, and more.

Indiana author, Dennis Collins, will be sharing his book, “Conflict in History, Measuring Symmetry, Thermodynamic Modeling, and Other Work,” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7.

Homeschoolers At The Library Homeschoolers at the library program is back and it’s all about science.

State General Assembly starts 2024 session State Sen. Stacey Donato (R-Logansport) gathered with fellow legislators Nov. 21 at the Statehouse for Organization Day — the ceremonial start of the Indiana General Assembly.

Organization Day marks the annual first roll call of all state lawmakers. This day also provides members of the Senate and House of Representatives with the opportunity to meet before session officially reconvenes in January. By state law, the 2024 session will conclude on or before March 14.

“The General Assembly gathers valuable information each interim through our interim study committees,” Donato said. “I am eager to see what legislation is created as a result of that hard work during the 2024 session, and as always, I will continue to serve Senate District 18 to the best of my ability.”

Book signing for Frisinger’s newest book is Dec. 1

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer There’s a shortage of children’s picture books available addressing the topic of death written from a Christian perspective, said Donna Frisinger.

It’s why the Fulton County author opted to publish such a book, “Bye-Bye Earthsuit - Hello Heavensuit.”

Frisinger will sign copies of the book, published in 2022, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, at Mustard Seed Mercantile, 602 Main St., Rochester.

In the foreword to “Bye-Bye Earthsuit - Hello Heavensuit,” Frisinger dedicates the story to her three grand-nephews, Matty, Sammy and Wiley.

Matty actually inspired the book, said Frisinger.

She mentioned Matty “is really close” to her husband, Barry, and just asked Barry one time, three years ago, if Barry was “going to die.”

“So, Barry got to lead him to Jesus as a result,” she said.

“I started looking online trying to find children’s books written from a Christian worldview ... to help explain what death is,” she said.

She noted she couldn’t find any and actually many books simply dealt with “losing pets.”

“This is the most important question in life and children need to know, and sometimes they lose a little friend even and don’t even know what happened,” she said.

She noted the book is for ages 4 and up, but “it’s really ageless.”

She put a Bible verse on each page.

“So the kids may not get that, but as the adults are reading to them, I hope they (see the Bible verses),” said Donna.

“Honestly, I think anybody that has lost somebody that they’re really close to, whether they’re a child, a teen or a senior citizen or anything in between, this will be a comfort to them,” she added. “I hope it will take away the fear of death and get them to face their own mortality because any moment our life could be taken from us and we don’t have to fear it if we love Jesus.”

“Bye-Bye Earthsuit - Hello Heavensuit” recently won an Advanced Writers and Speakers Association Golden Scroll Award.

“They give yearly awards for the best new Christian books on the market,” said Donna.

Due to a friend funding a number of the books, Donna has some to give away for free to churches, funeral homes and the like.

“Bye-Bye Earthsuit - Hello Heavensuit” is her fifth book, with the others including those in the Bink and Slinky series and “A Transistor Christmas.”

She’s currently working on other books, including two “Chicken Soup For the Soul”-type nonfiction books.

The first is called “One Chance ... One Dance: Don’t Miss the Moments of Your Life” and should be out next spring.

It includes stories by Donna and other authors regarding “missed opportunities” or ones that people did take advantage of, she said.

“It’s missed opportunities you wish you could redo,” she said. “It’s an encouragement to live life to the fullest.”

The second book, set to come out around Christmas 2024, is “Heaven’s Kiss: Hugs and Tugs For the Christmas Season.” It’s also an anthology of stories by Donna and other authors.

“It’s all just encouraging stories to live your life. Don’t miss it, and I think so many people don’t do that,”

she said.

Donna is also working on a patriotic children’s book called “Why We Stand,” which refers to why people stand for the national anthem, and a book called “Monkey in the Middle.”

The latter tells of three girls being brought together by an “ornery capuchin monkey,” she said.

Turkey Day was at Black Pine Animal Sanctuary Black Pine Animal Sanctuary’s annual Turkey Day was Saturday, Nov. 25. Animals were given Thanksgiving favorites, such as turkey, chicken, cornish hens, and pumpkins.

The foods are not the standard, everyday part of the animal’s specific diet plans and are given as enrichment for the animals to enjoy.

Guests wandered the paved pathways and watch the residents enjoy their treats.

This was the last day Black Pine Animal Sanctuary was open until the first weekend of May 2024.

Valley Entomology Team headed to state contest Dec. 9 The Tippecanoe Valley High School Entomology Team is headed to the state contest at Purdue University Saturday, Dec. 9.

The team placed first at the Triton High School Invitational

and the Northwestern High School Invitational with students placing as top 10 individuals at each contest. At the Area 10 contest held Nov. 14, the team placed second in the FFA division and

third overall with Trista Van Doren placing first individually in the FFA division.

The team is coached by Tippecanoe Valley FFA Advisor Hope Slagle.

The game was the first for Tony Stesiak as the coach of the visiting team at the RHS gym. Stesiak was the Rochester girls coach from 2000-17 and coached the Lady Zs to the Class 2A state title in 2004 and to a regional title in 2015.

Rochester led 17-10 with under two minutes left in the first half after a Wilson pullup 15-footer, and Winamac starters Kroft and Maggie Smith as well as reserve forward Marissa Iverson all picked up their second fouls in the second quarter.

They walked through the handshake line following the team’s game with Tippecanoe Valley Nov. 21, Valley beat Rochester for the third straight year and improved to 7-1. Rochester fell to 3-4.

Valley led wire to wire. Already leading 24-13, Valley went on an 18-0 run covering the third and fourth quarters.

A 3-pointer in the final 30 seconds was Rochester’s only scoring in the final 10 minutes.

Aubrey Wilson scored a careerhigh 15 points. Rylee Clevenger added 11 as the Rochester girls basketball team hung on for a 4140 win over host Maconaquah.

Swimming The Rochester boys swimming team went 3-2 at the Goshen DecaDuals Nov. 21, while the girls team went 1-4.

Senior Jake Seuferer was the only Rochester swimmer of either gender to win an individual title.

Rochester travels to the Warsaw Invitational at 10 a.m. this Saturday.

Boys Wrestling Rochester improved their dual match record to 2-0 with a 48-18 win over Northfield.

Rochester hosted Wabash before traveling to the Plymouth Invitational.

Rochester is ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, per the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association poll.

On a most difficult day for the Rochester wrestling team, they went about their business while trying to process their grief. They are still working through everything, both on and off the mat. As for the on-the-mat part, they won their season opening dual meet over host Manchester 49-21 Friday, Nov. 24.

Before that all happened, the team attended the viewing of Carlos Orduño at Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester.

A 2023 Rochester graduate, Orduno, 18, was killed in a single-vehicle accident Nov. 10.

Orduno was the reigning Three Rivers Conference heavyweight champion; he later advanced to semistate. Marco Orduño, Carlos’ younger brother, is a freshman wrestler at Rochester.

Girls Wrestling Led by 105-pound champion Lilly Gerald, the Rochester girls wrestling team scored 140 points and finished third at the Rochester Girls Invitational recently.
