By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer A blend of comedy and suspense is the makeup of Rochester High School Tri-Epsilon’s fall play.

Students will perform “The Murder Mystery at the Murder Mystery” at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17-18, in the RHS auditorium. Tickets are $5 for those 6 and younger and $7 for those 7 and older and may be purchased at the RHS attendance office or the door.

Megan Allen, who’s co-directing the play with Brenda McClain, said the production by Brian D. Taylor is a “murder mystery ... with a twist.”

It follows the cast of a play who have one of their own pass away during a rehearsal, with cast members working to find the murderer.

Allen said students get “to play multiple roles” through the show.

“We were drawn to the idea of students being challenged to alternate between using a British accent and an American accent,” she said. “With this being a lesser known play, it allows the students to interpret their own version of the characters that they are performing instead of basing their characters on something that they have seen before.”

There are 14 kids in the cast, with three understudies, five crew members, and six theater production crew members.

Allen said she hoped students can “gain confidence, friendships, memories, public speaking and performance skills along with time management and problem solving abilities” through their involvement in the play.

“We hope that the audience will be able to have an evening of humor and quirkiness when attempting

Good: Role as deputy coroner helps others

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Jon Good said his role as Fulton County deputy coroner helps others.

“It’s rewarding to the standpoint that you are helping people and you’re giving the deceased a voice because you basically do the who, what, where, when, why and how of a person’s death,” he said. “You’re helping the families who are surviving because they want to know what happened to this person and how did it happen? There’s always questions about that.”

Good of Rochester serves as deputy coroner under his sister, Jeri Good. Previously, he was deputy coroner under his father and mother, J.D. and Joyce Good, and coroner himself for 11 years.

He’s also had a 40-year career with his family’s Rochester funeral home, now known as Good Family Funeral Home, working presently as funeral director, embalmer and reconstructive artist.

Jon originally hadn’t planned on entering the family business, however.

After graduating from Rochester High School in 1977, where he ran cross-country and was on the first-ever boys swim team, he went to then Manchester College. Jon graduated in 1981, getting his degree in secondary education.

He wanted to be a biology teacher, but after student teaching his senior year, he opted to change his career trajectory.

“By the time I had gone through the four years of college, the kids had changed so much,

Photo by Leah Sander. and the parental support wasn’t there, so I decided if I’m going to teach, I’m going to go on to a collegiate level or something like that,” said Jon. “I never did do that because my father said, ‘well, as long as you’re not going to be in a teaching field, you might as well help out here around the funeral home. We can use you.’”

“So, I worked for him a year and then I went to mortuary school,” said Jon. “It was kind of like second hand to me because

I had been working in and out of the prep room and helping since I was probably 14, 15 years old.”

Good was the valedictorian of the 1983 Mid-America College of Funeral Service.

He’s continued to learn, through required educational hours as deputy coroner.

Jeri vouched he goes above and beyond in continuing education.

“Last year, I believe he had probably 56 hours that he took because he did some extensive

training in Indianapolis,” she said.

Jeri called her brother “compassionate and caring” in working with families as deputy coroner and through the funeral home.

“He empathizes with them and really has been there to help them,” she said.

Good has two children, with his daughter, Corinna, working to become a nurse practitioner and daughter, Cassidy, studying premed.

Let’s study the Bible Jesus Christ has overcome the world

Christ supplies an abundance of grace with which to bear it, and in our weakness, we are made strong.

“In that day” (John 16:23) refers probably to the day when the Holy Spirit would come and begin his ministry among them. While Christ was on earth, the disciples were accustomed to taking their questions and needs to him personally. When Christ returned to heaven, he sent the Spirit to assist them in their praying (Romans 8:26-27), and instructed them to pray to the father personally. Bible prayer is to the father, through the son, in the Spirit.

It will not be necessary for Christ to beg the father on our behalf (verse 26) because the father is willing to answer our requests (verse 27).

Prayer is a tremendous privilege!

Consider these other words of Christ about prayer: John 14:13-14; 15:7; 15:16. As the believer allows the Holy Spirit to teach him the Word of God, he grows in his prayer life, for prayer and the word go together.

Jude 20 commands us to “pray in the Holy Ghost.” Too much praying today is in the flesh, asking for things that are not in the will of God (see James 4:1-10). It is wonderful

to allow the Holy Spirit to burden us with prayer requests (Romans 9:1-3). The Spirit knows the mind of the father and can lead us to pray for those things God wants to give us. It has well been said that prayer is not overcoming God’s reluctance; it is laying hold of his willingness.

The testimony of the disciples must have pleased Christ’s heart, but He warned them of their coming failure (verse 32). Even God the Father would finally forsake Jesus on the cross! What a blessing to hear the Lord say, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (verse 33). He was about to be arrested and crucified, yet Jesus gives peace and joy to His followers! He promises them his victory: “I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

God has a special ministry in our lives. Are we allowing him to have his way?

The flowers provided by family and friends were a tribute to how Ned was liked by all. The outpouring of cards, texts, calls and those who signed the book and attended the funeral as well as the kinds words brought forth helped us through this difficult time.

To all who donated to Trinity UM Church, God bless you! To the ladies of Trinity Church, the funeral dinner was delicious and to Trinity Church family for providing their new CommUnity Hall for us to sit together and reminisce, thank you!

Obituaries Franklin L. Swick

Carlos G. Orduno Passionate Wrestler

Carlos G. Orduno, 18, Rochester, was fatally injured in a motor vehicle accident in the early morning hours of Friday, Nov. 10, 2023, in Akron on his way to work at Pike Lumber.

On Nov. 13, 2004, Carlos Giovanni Orduno was born to Juan Carlos and Ivonne Orduno Rodriguez. Carlos was the oldest son of the OrCARLOS G. duno family and grew up sharing his childhood ORDUNO with three sisters, Cyndy, Evelin and Yadira, and a younger brother, Marco. Carlos graduated from Rochester High School this past May. As a member of the RHS wrestling team, he wrestled the heavyweight division, usually dominating his opponent by using his power, balance and athleticism with great finesse. 2023 was especially memorable for Carlos as he was Three Rivers Conference champion, sectional runner-up and ascended to IHSAA SemiState Competition. He revered Coach Gard who was a treasured mentor on life as well as the mats. Carlos excelled in lifting; it was by far his favorite class.

With great positivity, sporting a radiant smile, Carlos made friends with all who met him. As a role model to his younger brother Marco, Carlos was especially proud of him and his accomplishments as a wrestler. At North Miami High School, he was known as Coach Orduno and was currently serving as a volunteer coach for their wrestling team.

Melody and Carlos enjoyed collaborating on intricate LEGOs construction projects. Making memories while creating some very unique pieces. Fishing was fun but serious as Carlos would let you know there’s only one way to fish; “catch and release.” Mechanically inclined, Carlos built his own bicycle, and he had a sneaker to coordinate with every outfit. Carlos is also remembered as the king of trade-ups. He enjoyed tinkering on the mechanics of his car, shopping at Walmart and riding bicycles.

Video games was a way Carlos could relax with friends. Forest green was his favorite color, and he was the proud owner of a unique collection of Hot Wheels. Carlos loved photography and took many pictures, thrift, long drives and listening to music.

Left to cherish Carlos’s memory are his parents, Juan Carlos and Ivonne Orduno of Rochester; his siblings, Cyndy Graves (David) of New Richmond, Evelin Dittman (Dean) of Rochester, Staff Sgt. Yadira Orduno (Guiseppe Lena) of Aviano Airforce Base in Italy and Marco Orduno of Rochester; his girlfriend, Miss Melody Hisey; bonus family, Brad and Patience Hisey and Mason Hisey; mentor and coach, Mr. Clint Gard; paternal grandparents, Salvador Orduno and Margarita Orduno of Nevada; nieces and nephews, Ethan Graves, Sophia Graves, Carson Dittman, Jonah Dittman and Benjamin Dittman.

A celebration of the life of Carlos G. Orduno will be at 11 a.m.

Saturday, Nov. 18, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Carlos’ family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, and an hour prior to his service Saturday at the funeral home.

The family asks that everyone wear bright and vibrant clothing to the visitation and service, which reflects Carlos’s positivity and radiance.

Burial will follow in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.

Ruth Barker

Ruth Adell Barker, 99, died at The Pavillion, Crescent Lake, Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023.

She married Howard L. Barker; who preceded her in death.

She is survived by five sons, William Barker, John (Gwen) Barker, Jack (Elizabeth) Barker, Robert (Rose Baker) Barker, and James Barker; five daughters, Mary (Roger) Bond, Rochester, Nancy Smith, Doris Dewitt (Glen) Gould, Juanita (Charlie) Harris, and Rose (Aaron) Whitmore; one sister-inlaw, Jadis Fingerlos; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to the time of service at 11 a.m.

Saturday Nov. 18, in Faith Bible Church, Pastor Richie Thomas will be officiating.

Interment will be held in Eden Cemetery, Crescent City.

Eldon V. Grube

Eldon V. Grube, 84, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, in Kokomo.

He was born on Nov. 4, 1939.

He married Linda Grube; who survives.

Additional survivors are ELDON V. six children; GRUBE Jane Musarra, Laura (Jeff) Cochran, Melissa Grube, Angie (Gabe) Gonzales, Tammy (Pat) Singleton, and Ryan (Nikki) Grube; one sister, Dorothy Etchison; one brother, Paul Grube; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Max, Walter, Rex, Carl, Allen, and Betty Dunlap.

No services will be held at this time.

Franklin L. Swick, 86, Burket, died at 1:03 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2023 in his residence.

He was born on Oct. 22, 1937. On December 22, 1962, he marFRANKLIN L. ried Judith SWICK E. Cook; who preceded him in death on January 21, 2023.

He is survived by his children Annette Swick, Burket; Derrell (Paula) Swick, San Antonio, Texas, Ginger (Joe) Bishop, Indianapolis, Pepper (Robert) Bell, Fort Wayne; and Mike Swick, Warsaw; seven grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; sisters Arlene Miller of Pierceton and Marilyn (James) Collins of Rochester; brothers Ronnie Swick of Claypool, David (Tammy) Swick of Mentone, and Mark (Valerie) Swick of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla. Frank was preceded in death by his parents Claude E. and Fern E. (Warren) Swick. wife Judy, sisters Nancy Kuhn and Phyllis Swick, and brothers Eldon and Macks Swick.

No services are being held at this time.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Interment will be held at a later date in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw Arrangements have been entrusted to King Memorial Home 101 N. Tucker Street, Mentone.

Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Burket Volunteer Fire Department.

Daniel Alvin Disinger

Daniel Alvin Disinger, 89, Francesville, died, Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023, in Parkview Haven Retirement Home, Francesville.

He was born on Aug. 7, 1934.

Interment was held at Roseland Cemetery, Francesville.

(Tennille) Calabrese, all of Winamac; and two daughters, Regina M. Calabrese, Winamac, and Christina A. (Jason) Fritz, Ennis, Texas; 16 grandchildren; one brother, Michael Hazzlet; three sisters, Audrey Hernandez, Deborah (Javier) Silva, and Janet Reiss; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Byron and Emma (Fry) Hazzlet; son, Rocco Joseph Calabrese; grandson, Cameron Calabrese.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Nov. 11, at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Winamac, with Rev. Leroy Kinnaman officiating.

Interment was held in Peter’s Cemetery, Winamac.

Attendees hear about veterans’ ‘service, sacrifice and selflessness’ at TVMS Veterans Day ceremony

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer All veterans are defined by “service, sacrifice and selflessness.”

Veteran and Tippecanoe Valley Middle School paraprofessional Ed Daggett spoke on that topic during Tippecanoe Valley Middle School’s Veterans Day ceremony Friday, Nov. 10.

“These words have great power to change and transform the lives of those that they touch,” he said.

“In every generation, brave men and women from all branches of the United States military have accomplished amazing acts of service to this country, on many fronts and many nations.

“In all these times, places and battles, our military members and those in leadership have given of themselves with the idea of

preserving the freedoms that we enjoy and extending their help to other countries so that people around the world can have their freedom as well,” Daggett continued.

He said when he reflects on how service, sacrifice and selflessness link to American soldiers, he thinks of the Soldier’s Creed.

“I often repeat it to myself whether to psych myself up or to remind myself of my purpose in life,” said Daggett.

The Creed includes such as elements as “I serve the people of the United States, and live the Army values” and “I am a guardian of freedom and the American way of life.”

“Even though none of us who joined the U.S. military did so with the thought that we would live these lives, the moment we signed our names on the dotted

line, we were ready to do our duty and lay down our life for God, our country, our Constitution and our families and to secure the freedoms we all enjoy,” said Daggett.

He said he “witnessed firsthand” the values of American soldiers when he was a boy in Panama during Operation Just Cause. Then the U.S. military worked to overthrow the Communist dictator of the country, Manuel Noriega, and his forces, from December 1989 to January 1990.

He said after the fighting stopped and American soldiers came near his home, “everyone was cheering for them because they had just liberated us from Communism.”

Daggett said one of the soldiers came over to him and gave him Snickers and other food.

Foundation launches ‘Giving Tuesday’ campaign The Fulton County Community Foundation is launching its annual Giving Tuesday campaign leading up to the Tuesday, Nov. 28 event. Similar to previous years, there is a significant community fund match initiative. Additionally, there is a $1 for $1 match opportunity for up to $10,000 for the Fulton County Parks Department and $15,000 for The Outlet Youth Center.

Giving Tuesday is an international day of celebration for local and global nonprofits, which work year round serving its communities.

Yakym recognizes veterans at Rochester High School ceremony

Military veterans are “living monuments of sacrifice, bravery, courage, valor and patriotism.”

So said U.S. Rep. Rudy Yakym of Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District at a Veterans Day ceremony Friday, Nov. 10, at Rochester High School.

Yakym, the keynote speaker for the event and son of an Air Force veteran, said “veterans represent the very best of what the United States of America has to offer.”

“Our veterans are the special 1% of Americans who were willing to give up their today, so we can have our tomorrow,” he said. “They put their life on the line to protect our nation and preserve our freedoms.”

Yakym referenced Vietnam veteran, Allen Reed, whom he had just met with earlier Friday in Mishawaka to replace one of Allen’s Purple Hearts which had been stolen. “(In the war) Allen was shot in the chest and had a collapsed lung.

He spent 76 days in the ICU, and after he going through all of the pain and all of the rehab, he told the Marine Corps he wanted to go back to the front lines,” said Yakym. “He spent the next three months on the front lines (before

being) shot again.”

“After going through rehab and coming back from that, he told the Marines that he wanted to go back to the front lines where he had so many of his friends, who were shot and killed right next to him,” said Yakym. “They wouldn’t let him go back after he had been shot twice.”

“Our veterans also served and sacrificed so that we can have and enjoy our American way of life, so we can live in safety, worship in freedom, enjoy our First Amendment rights to speak our minds, choose our leaders and who will represent us, build a ... career and provide for our families,” he continued. “We know it’s because of their bravery and because of the battle scars that they have borne that we are able to gather here today as citizens of the greatest, most powerful, prosperous, generous and freest nation in the history of the world.”

“And the day that we start forgetting that, is the day that we will cease to be all of these things,” Yakym added.

Earlier in the ceremony, Rochester Mayor Ted Denton spoke.

He referenced the horrors that World War II veterans went through in Europe fighting Nazism.

Denton also recalled his college friend who was killed in Vietnam.

Governor Eric J. Holcomb and the Indiana Department of Transportation gathered Friday, Nov. 3 at the Eagles Theatre with cities, towns, and counties from across northeast Indiana receiving portions of the $91.5 million awarded through the Community Crossings matching grant program, a component of Governor Holcomb’s Next Level Roads program.

“Community Crossings continues to provide opportunities for Indiana local communities, large and small, to make connectivity and safety road improvements for Hoosier families and our visitors,” Gov. Holcomb said. “The importance of this matching grant program is immediately obvious as we take our award-winning statewide infrastructure network to the next level.”

Communities submitted applications for funding during a highly competitive call for projects in July. Funding for Community Crossings comes from the state’s local road and bridge matching grant fund. The Community

Crossings initiative has provided nearly $1.5 billion in state matching funds for local road improvement projects since 2016.

“It’s encouraging to see continued dedication and commitment to transportation infrastructure at the local level,” INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith said. “Seeing the completed projects from this program is a reward in itself and a win for the state.”

State legislators identified long-term funding for Community Crossings as part of House Enrolled Act 1002, passed by the General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Holcomb in April 2017.

Among the communities that were awarded part of the funds were Kewanna, $78,256.50; Bunker Hill, $73,217.776; Argos, $802,731.03 and Mentone, $236,143.35.

A list of all 188 communities receiving matching funds in the 2023 fall call for projects is available on INDOT’s website. The next call for projects will open in January.

Rochester had been 0-3 against Northwestern with the three losses being by an average of 24 points per game since Northwestern was added to the schedule in 2020.

Rochester begins Three Rivers Conference play with road games against Peru at 7:45 p.m. Thursday and Maconaquah at 7:30 p.m.

Girls Wrestling Led by individual champions Lilly Gerald (103-106), Kyra Doran (124-129), Laine Peppler (138-142) and Grace Hiroms (148-152), Rochester, won the

season-opening East Noble Invitational Saturday.

Rochester scored 175 points to top the 33-team field.

Hiroms, a senior who was a state runner-up last year, won all five of her matches by fall.

Doran won all five of her matches by fall, including a win in 37 seconds over Shelbyville’s Sydney Dudgeon.

Gerald also won all five of her matches by fall, including two that lasted less than 30 seconds.

Peppler went 5-0 with four falls and a 4-2 decision over Warsaw’s Mariana Castro in the championship.

All nine Rochester wrestlers finished in the top four in their weight class.

Makenna McKee was second at 124-130 after going 4-1 on the

day. All four of her wins were by fall.

Fourth-place finishers included Rilyn Strasser (108-113), Amber Blackburn (130-134), and Lexi Haughs (139-141).

Rochester will host its own girls invitational at 9 a.m. this Saturday.

Schedule highlights include the regional at Mishawaka Dec. 30, semistate at Rochester Jan. 5, and the state finals in Kokomo Jan. 12.

Boys Wrestling Brady Beck, a two-time state placer who finished seventh in the state at 220 last year, moves up to 285 this year and is ranked No. 2. Brant Beck is No. 5 at 165.

Alex Deming, who was seventh last year at 195, is No. 6 at 190 this year. Layne Horn begins the

year ranked No. 8 at 120.

Brant Beck and Horn are both sophomores and state qualifiers from last year.

The season begins with a dual match at Manchester at 6:30 p.m.

There are weekend and evening hours and start and end times are not always set. There are many positives about this job. Being around athletes and their sports is always exciting, and no two days are the same. Athletes are a motivated population and are anxious to get back to playing. It is fun to push and challenge athletes, watch them regain the confidence they had before their injury, and then see them excel when they return to the court or the playing field.

What advice would you give someone who wants to pursue this profession?

I would advise doing an internship or job shadow with someone in the profession to truly understand what the day-to-day job will look like. Most people are familiar with the game coverage aspect.

When you watch the NFL or college games on TV, you see athletic trainers run out onto the field or court. There is a lot that goes on in between games that make up the majority of the job.

The type of person who is a good fit for this job needs to be able to work with various people in various settings. What education is needed to become and athletic trainer?

To become certified as an athletic trainer, you need a master’s degree in athletic training. The master’s degree program is a combination of classwork and clinical experiences.

Upon completion of the degree, you sit for the national board exam. In addition to a certification, you need to be licensed in each state that you practice in.

What are the daily responsibilities in the high school setting?

Athletes come to the training room after school for treatment and evaluation. I evaluate new injuries and re-evaluate existing athletes to determine their participation status. Treatments include strengthening and stretching exercises as well as taping or bracing as needed. I communicate with parents and coaches daily about athletes and modify their activities if they aren’t able to participate in all aspects of practice. I also cover games to provide acute care for any injuries that may occur in a game situation.

A large part of my responsibilities include developing, rehearsing, and communicating about emergency action plans. This includes working with school personnel to maintain AED (defibrillators) at all athletic venues and coordinating with law enforcement and emergency services to review our emergency plans.
