In 2003, Snyder was deployed with an infantry battalion into the Middle East.

The battalion was in charge of security inside a 10mile perimeter of the base.

As the officer in charge, Snyder reported to the Tactical Operations Center. He was responsible for the army’s reaction to anything happening in the area, with a variety of options including everything from mortars to quick reaction teams. The battalion also had a small POW camp to secure detainees.

“We lived in buildings with no electricity and no water,”

Snyder recalled. “We went seven weeks without a real shower until a general passing through brought with him some portable shower units for the 600 men stationed there.”

Following that assignment, Snyder transitioned to a civil affairs role, helping schools, farmers and medical facilities get the supplies and medications they needed to run. For his efforts during the deployment, Snyder was given the Bronze Star and Combat Action Badge, among other notable commendations.

After a return to the United States, where he was stationed at several bases throughout the country, he was deployed for a second time in 2008, Continued on page 2

Hobby farmer shares his passion for community involvement %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 )HDWXUH :ULWHU “Get to know people. Life is short, so make the best of it, and choose to be involved and plug into other people’s lives,” those are the words Stephen Williams tries to live by.

Williams was born and raised in Rochester. He graduated in 2004 from Rochester High School before attending Vincennes University where he obtained his associate’s degree in law enforcement and a bachelor’s degree in homeland security and public safety.

He worked as a police officer for Vincennes while he attended school.

When he moved back home, he worked for a couple of area farmers and became further involved in agriculture.

In addition to his full-time gig as an equipment road salesman for a New Holland dealer out of central Michigan, Williams also hobby farms his grandparent’s land. He raises soybeans and corn on rotation which gives him more direct involvement with understanding feed options, fertilizer, chemicals, and other elements for optimal crop growth.

One of the ways Williams is involved in the community is through the Fulton County Fair Board. He has belonged to the organization for seven years; the last three he has served as the president.

“We are always looking for indi-

viduals who will put effort into the fair board. Outside perspective is beneficial,” he said.

They are always looking for ways to better utilize the fairgrounds, especially in the off-season. During the off season, the horse and pony building is used for horse shows.

The board is also in charge of the entertainment during the fair.

“My goal is to make the fair worthwhile for the community to come to. We put a lot of effort into trying to find entertainment and activities for folks to enjoy,” said Williams.

Williams encourages anyone interested in being involved with the fair board to contact him at (574) 835-2668. “Anyone can be involved. Purdue Extension is always looking for volunteers for the 4-H side too. There’s a lot of great programs offered for kids that help teach education and responsibility,” he said.

Williams’ other community passion is the Fulton County Farm Bureau board, which he is also currently president of. He has been a member since 2012. The grassroots organization started in the early 1900s.

“We do a lot of political advocating for the betterment of the farming community. Whether it’s farmers, agrobusiness, really, anything on the agriculture end of it, that’s what we’re there from” he added.

“Farm Bureau members gain info about what’s going on at the state level and federally. It gives you an opportunity to plug-in locally. Every year we team up with the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce for the legislative breakfast. It’s an opportunity for your voice to be heard and you can be as involved or noninvolved as you want.”

Williams’ other hobbies include tractor pulls. He is currently involved in two different clubs. He also enjoys traveling to see friends in various states, spending time with his family and doing his best to help people in the community whenever he can.

“I try to be the friendly face for people to interact with whenever I can.”

The cell was a joint operation, utilizing not only the resources of the Army but of the Air Force and Navy, as well. The operation was in charge of security for the assigned region, including everything from drone support to medical evacuations. Snyder once again was serving as battle captain, this time of a larger area.

Upon his return from deployment, Snyder knew he had a choice

to make — continue in the Army or go back to teaching. Although he didn’t yet have a family, he chose to settle in Rochester and pursue a career in education. However, because of his now-captain rank and his specialty, he has not technically been released from the Army and is still a member of the active reserves.

“The Army could call me up any time they wanted, although I’d have to lose a few pounds and get in to better shape,” he joked.

Columbia for six years. Previously, he was principal at Rochester High School from 2011-14. Now married to Jennifer, a teacher at Rochester High School, the couple has three daughters, Ripelee, 11, Piper, 9, and Benning Georgia, a kindergarten student in his school who was named after the beloved Army base where Snyder did much of his training.

“I learned a lot in the Army — hard work, teamwork, working side-by-side with other soldiers to make sure you both come home safely,” he recalled. “That’s real life.

Every day I think of my brothers and things that happened.”

Vaccination site closed The vaccination site located at the Fulton County Fairgrounds will be closed Thursday, Nov. 11, due to Veterans Day. Ages 5-11 is now available at the vaccine site during business hours (Pfizer).

OBITUARIES Lois E. Van Meter Former Avon Representative

Lois E. (Burton) Van Meter, 86, formerly of Jackson, Mich., and Fulton County, passed away Friday evening, Oct. 29, 2021, in Fairlawn, Ohio.

She was born Feb. 7, 1935, in Fulton, the daughter of Fred A. and Lelia Belle (Gault) Burton. On July 12, 1953, in Cass County, she married Harold Van Meter. He preceded her in death Jan. 15, 2012. /2,6 ( Lois was an Avon representative, real estate 9$1 0(7(5 agent, 7-Eleven employee and a volunteer at the Jackson Hospital. She enjoyed sewing, playing cards and baking, especially with her family and friends. Her family will cherish the quilts she made as well as many memories of baking together and eating her famous waffles.

She led two card clubs and was a member of the Lois Club and the Calvary United Methodist Church. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She enjoyed having long phone conversations with her loved ones.

Survivors include her son, David (Barbara) Van Meter; grandchildren, Ron (Jenifer) Van Meter, Carrie (Robert Mast) Van Meter, Ashley (Andrew) Klug, Jessica Van Meter, David (Hannah) Van Meter and Lauren Van Meter; great-grandchildren, Joey Van Meter, Emily Van Meter-Mast, Tyler Klug and Paige Klug.

She was preceded in death by her daughters, Barbara Jo Van Meter in 1999 and Brenda Kay Van Meter in 2016; siblings, Lincoln Burton, Donald Burton, Wanda Burton and Alberta Barker, who passed away earlier the same day.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Fulton. Friends called from 10-11 a.m.

Thursday at the funeral home. Burial was in the Metea Baptist Cemetery.

Jack Lloyd Butts U.S. Navy Veteran

Jack Lloyd Butts, 81, Naples, Fla., passed away comfortably Thursday, Oct. 28, 2021, in the presence of his loving family.

Jack was born July 10, 1940, to J. Lloyd Butts and Clara Annabelle (Tootie/GGB) Butts in Michigan City.

Jack attended Purdue University, where he -$&. //2<' graduated with a B.S. in industrial management in %8776 1962. While attending Purdue, he was student body president, Cary Quadrangle president, a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Iron Key, Scabbard & Blade; and he was on the president’s council. He was also in the ROTC. After graduating from Purdue, Jack joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Diego, Calif., and assigned as an anti-submarine warfare officer aboard the USS Uhlmann DD 687. Jack married Ann Elaine Swihart on Feb. 9, 1963. Upon completion of his service in 1964, Jack and Ann moved to Valparaiso, where Ann completed her college degree in education.

Jack was hired by Arthur Anderson (now known as Accenture) from 1965 to 1969, and he and Ann moved to Arlington Heights, Ill. They later moved to Hinsdale, Ill., where they had their two sons, Jason (1972) and Kevin (1976).

Jack completed his MBA at the J.L. Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He made partner in charge in Arthur Anderson’s Chicago office. In 1983, Jack and his family moved to Weston, Mass., where he was named managing partner for Anderson Consulting until 1990. At this time, Jack was transferred to Seoul, Korea, where he was named country managing partner of Northern Asia. After living in Seoul for four years, Jack and Ann returned to the U.S. and he retired from Anderson Consulting in December of 1996. He was also proud to be a 32nd degree Mason.

Post-retirement Jack was an adjunct professor of management information systems at C.H. Kellstadt Graduate School of Business at DePaul University and an adjunct professor of technology at J.L. Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

When not working, Jack threw himself into a myriad of activities and spending time with his family. He enjoyed traveling the world, riding his motorcycle, snow skiing, water skiing, bicycling, fishing, kayaking and, of course, playing tennis and golf — his favorites. He has been described as the truest of gentlemen and the kindest of souls. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; his sister, Barbara Savage of Peru; his two sons, Jason (Amy) of Zionsville and Kevin (Renée) of Arlington, Tenn.; his three grandchildren, Alex, Teel and Tinley; and his two nieces, Jennifer DeGroff of Warsaw and Erin Savage of Peru, and their families; as well as the entire Swihart family of Indiana, Missouri and Tennessee.

He will be interned at Culver Masonic Cemetery next to his parents in Culver, his home away from home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests friends and family make donations to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or a charity they hold dear.

Florence C. Perdue Quality Supervisor Manager

Florence C. Perdue, 91, Rochester, passed away at 9:27 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021, at her residence.

She was born July 11, 1930, in East Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Atly and Lillie (Arnold) Cencion, and graduated from Akron High School in 1948. On Aug. 6, 1948, in Akron, she married Thomas “Sonny” D. )/25(1&( & Perdue Jr. He preceded her in death Aug. 2, 2011.

3(5'8( Florence retired from Hart, Schaffner and Marx after 33 years as a quality supervisor manager. She had been an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Rebekah’s Lodge for more than 50 years, where she held offices at the local, district and state levels, American Legion Auxiliary and Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing the piano, was an avid reader, enjoyed collecting bells, loved to dance and was an adventurous traveler.

Survivors include her sons, Thomas D. Funeral services, along with a Rebekah Lodge service, will be conducted at noon Saturday, Nov. 13, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester. Friends may visit from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester.

Linc Andrew Townsend Rochester Meats And Deli Owner

Linc Andrew Townsend, 57, Rochester, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at 8:47 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2021, at his residence.

This followed a valiant battle with cancer.

On Nov. 5, 1963, Linc was born in Rochester to Jack L. and Wanda Cloud Townsend. Growing up, he shared his childhood with a sister, Tammy, and two /,1& $ brothers, Jay and Brian. Linc graduated with the 72:16(1' class of 1983 from Rochester High School. During his years at RHS, he was active in the FFA. Linc married the love of his life, Miss Lisa R. Teel Sept. 22, 1985, in the Fulton Baptist Temple. They shared 36 years of life’s adventures. Their union produced two handsome sons, Blayne and Brody, and a grandson, Jake Andrew, has been added to the family tree. Three more arrivals are coming, one in early December 2021 and two more in the spring of 2022.

With a strong work ethic, Linc and Lisa have collaborated sharing their culinary skills and meat cutting talents to best serve their customers at Rochester Meats and Deli and the Manitou Banquet Hall since 2006.

In the earlier years, Linc served the Liberty Township Fire and Rescue Team, with some of those years as their chief. He was a member of the Red Knights Firefighter Motorcycle Club.

In the early 1990s, Linc restored and rebuilt his 1986 Caribbean Blue Jeep CJ 8 Scrambler show truck, known as the “Missing Linc.” He enjoyed stock car dirt track racing, driving the purple No. 94 with adventure and great success. His racing rides were always a Chevy product, either a Monte Carlo or Camaro. Linc loved coaching his sons and their friends on minor league baseball.

A Harley Davidson enthusiast, Linc was the proud owner of a 2004 pearl white Ultra Classic and a 2020 Tri-Glide, also in pearl white. He and Lisa looked forward to the freedom of catching the warm summer breezes as they enjoyed day trips around northern Indiana. Linc was a great patriot who loved his country. He flew the United States flag with great pride and had his motorcycles customized with a flag emblazoned on the fender.

Left to cherish Linc’s memory are his wife, Lisa; parents, Jack and Wanda Townsend of Rochester; two sons, Blayne Townsend and wife Corbin of Culver and Brody Townsend and wife Brooke of Rochester; a grandson, Jake Andrew Townsend; three siblings, Jack “Jay” Townsend of Kewanna, Tammy Townsend of Rochester and Brian Townsend of Fulton; mother-inlaw, Judy Teel Green and husband Jim of Rochester; brother-in-law, Jim Teel of Lafayette; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Linc in death are his grandparents; father-in-law, Robert Teel; sisters-in-law, Rosi Townsend and Linda Teel; and Yoko, a special three-legged German Shepherd that amazingly swam upstream.

A celebration of the life of Linc Andrew Townsend was held at 11 a.m.

Tuesday, Nov. 9, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Friends visited with the family from 4-7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the funeral home. The Red Knights conducted a memorial service prior to the life celebration. Interment was in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.

November happenings at Akron Carnegie Public Library Here’s a look at some of the thing happening at the Akron Carnegie Public Library during November.

• DINOvember is back. The dinosaurs are on the move daily at Akron Carnegie Public Library throughout the month of November. Stop in when you can or every day to see what the reptiles are up to. Be sure to make a weekly stop and pick up one of the dino crafts to take and make at home.

• The library will have available the Oculus Quest2, a virtual reality 3-D gaming system on loan from the Indiana State Library through Nov. 24. This item is available for in-house use only and sign-up is required for all 45 minute slots. This is available each day starting at 4 p.m., and users must be at least 13 or older with a valid ACPL library card, to use the gaming system.

• Join the library each Wednesday at 10 a.m. for preschool story hour. The theme for fall is “What do you want to be when you grow up?’

Story Hour lasts approximately one hour. Children ages 3-5 will enjoy stories, songs, crafts and more.

• The Adult Readers’ Book Club will meet Thursday, Nov. 4, starting at 5 p.m. New members are always welcome.

• Patrons are invited to stop in and pick up a mini canvas any time after Nov. 8 to make a Christmas scene and return to the library.

During the month of December, all

returned canvases will be on display for our Christmas Art Show on the art wall. The canvas can be decorated with any medium you choose. Canvases need to be returned by Nov. 29 to allow for display to be made. For more information, ask a staff member.

• Akron Carnegie Public Library will host its first Book Talk at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9. Indiana State Librarian and Regional Coordinator Laura Jones will be sharing her list of must reads for Christmas this year. Jones has done all the work, now it’s your turn to make your Christmas reading wish list from her recommendations. Join in for an hour of reviews and get a head start on some great Christmas reading material for the holidays. Sign-up is encouraged.

• WOW Club Wednesday will start at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10. Children in grades one to five are encouraged to join this free club with lots of fun activities and crafts.

• The library will be closed Thursday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day. • From Nov. 13 until Dec. 10, patrons may come in and pick a name off the Miracle Tree to help a Tippecanoe Valley Family in need for the holidays.

• Nov. 15 will begin Thanksgiving celebrations leading up to Thanksgiving Day. You can pick up warm and inviting holiday books from the Thanksgiving feast table.

(There will be an adult and kids table.) While you’re here take a

picture in front of the turkey art wall mural. You provide your own camera and the library will have the photo op ready for use. Before you leave, pick up information on Akron Day Before Thanksgiving Day Balloon Parade. Just like Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade where you see all the giant balloons coming down the street, they are inviting patrons to make their own unique creations using balloons. Design your character at home and bring it into the library at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, when everyone will parade around the library showing off their creations.

The week leading up to Thanksgiving will be a fun-filled one at ACPL. • The Chain Gang meets at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, for those who enjoy crocheting, knitting, sewing or needlepoint. Bring your materials with you and work alongside others who enjoy this hobby.

• The theme for Adult Crafty Corner will be a Christmas ornament tree board. Come to the library at either 4 or 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18. This event is moved a week earlier due to accommodate the holiday. This is a free class with all materials provided. Sign up is required and class size is limited.

• The library will be closed Nov. 25-26 in observance of Thanksgiving.

• LEGO Club will be held from 4-5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29. Come join in and explore your creativity with LEGOs and snap circuits. You never know what you can create.

This includes all

those who have served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, National Guard, Air Force and the Coast Guard.

Veterans Day pays tribute to all American soldiers, both living and dead. The holiday’s primary purpose is to thank living veterans for their service and sacrifices. There are several different events honoring the veterans of Fulton County.

Local service men and women are invited to the Kewanna-Union Township Public Library, 210 E. Main St., to the library’s coffee and tea time 10:30 a.m. Veterans are welcome to share stories of their service. Snacks and drinks will be provided. All are welcome to attend.

The Fulton County American Legion Post 36 will be begin its Veterans Day ceremony approximately 10:40 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, downtown at the Rochester Courthouse. The ceremony will consist of the Mayor Ted Denton speaking, three gun volley salute by the Legion Honor Guard, flag raising, national anthem sung by Erika Yatez, the grand daughter of VFW Commander Jean Maners, pastor of Grace Methodist and VFW member Kurt Nichols, officiating, playing of taps by a Legion member and Legion Post Commander Ron Beckman will be speaking as well.

Immediately following the ceremony at the courthouse, veterans and their families are invited to the VFW, 1703 Federal Road, Rochester, to warm up with a soup lunch.

Later that day, veterans and their families can enjoy a turkey dinner 4 p.m. at the Legion, 611 Main St., Rochester.

According to flrst-grade teacher Beth Piper, the students are on a rotation each week and get to choose their jobs. Each student has several chances to do each job. Every afternoon, toward the end of the school day, the students go outside and pull the ‡ag down. After carrying the ‡ag inside, each student takes a corner and spreads it out before properly start folding it. Local schools honor Veterans Day Several area schools will have special programming to honor Veterans Day, which is recognized Thursday, Nov. 11.

• Mentone Elementary will have a virtual Veterans Day video that will be available Thursday, according to Principal Randy Dahms.

• Tippecanoe Valley Middle School also will have a virtual Veterans Day video available Thursday, according to Principal Scott Backus.

• Caston Jr./Sr. High School will be hosting a Veterans Day program at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11. All veterans are welcome to attend. Guests are asked to arrive no earlier than 8:30 a.m. and

enter through door two. Coffee and refreshments will be provided from 8:30-9 a.m.

• The first graders of Columbia Elementary will be honoring veterans during their music concert, which will be held at 6 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 11, at the Fulton County Courthouse on the west

lawn. Their concert is titled, “Let’s Celebrate Veteran’s Day.” Any veteran is invited to the concert as the students are looking forward to honoring them. Additionally, the American Legion Honor Guard will be folding the flag at the end of their performance.

The birthday itself was formally recognized in 1921 at the behest of Major Gen. John Lejeune, who ordered Nov. 10, 1775, to be officially recognized service-wide

as the Marine Corps birthday.

The origins go back to the Revolutionary War in October 1775.

At that time, the Continental Congress developed an official plan to use Marines to oversee a mission to intercept ammunition shipments from Britain. This,

In 1970 Dennis Jaeger was a 17 year old high school senior from Crown Point when his father, a Marine himself, sent him to the military after Jaeger found himself in some trouble. This was the beginning of the Vietnam War, “it was scary to enlist at that time,” stated Jaeger.

He was sent to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif., for basic training, then to Camp Pendleton in California which is one of the largest Marine Corps bases in the U.S. There he was trained as a radio operator. Later that year, he then went to Camp Schwab in Okinawa, Japan, on duty for almost seven and a half months. Early in 1971 he left for the Philippines for two months, and from there to guard an air base in Vietnam for eight and a half months.

“I’m not a hero,” claimed Jaeger.

“I’m above ground still talking.” He said it took a lot to calm his nerves.

He shares a story of a Friday night they showed a film on an old sheet and all of a sudden there would be the ring of gunshots and bullet holes through the sheet. He stated, “I’m still here,” as he continued to say he doesn’t have a story like some of his friends.

The military taught Jaeger about respect and honor. As a radio operator he had to have top secret clearance and was able to listen to all frequencies, which was an honor in itself, said Jaeger. The military gave him a new view on life, “you see things differently,” explained Jaeger, “in the military, everyone is one, you have to work together. No one works alone, you have to do it as a unit.”

Jaeger has been using the skills he learned from the military throughout his life.

After his time in the military, he worked as an operating engineer through the Union Laborers, ultimately accepting a job in Fulton County at the landfill. He has made Rochester his family’s homestead.

“Something just made you stay here,” he joked when asked why he made Continued on page 13

Jaeger is now a member of the American Legion and honor guard.

He tries to help with whatever and whenever the Legion may need it. He is one of two members at the legion who are Marine veterans. He is also responsible for the Fulton County Salvation Army, where they have raised money for Hope Ministries.

“We do as much as we can, it makes you feel good knowing you are helping other people,” Jaeger commented.

He continued to state it’s about giving back to the community of Ful-

ton County.

Jaeger will be helping fold the flag of the United States at the end of the Veterans Day program at Columbia Elementary School Nov. 11. He also wants to educate children about the flag and what it means to appreciate it. Jaeger explained local elementary schools Riddle, Caston, Mentone and Akron participate in the flag appreciation program, “a lot of kids don’t know what the flag represents.”

He is honored to be a part of something that educates kids, “They need to be proud of their country,” Jaeger added.

On Friday night, Tippecanoe Valley Middle School student Brelynna “Bre” Felix, 12, of Akron, was killed after being hit by a vehicle near SR 19 and CR 50N north of Akron in Fulton County. Her brother Isaiah Felix, 15, a Tippecanoe Valley High School student, received head and facial injuries and was taken first to Lutheran in Fort Wayne before being transported to Indianapolis for treatment.

Police found the driver of the vehicle, Gage Rogers, 26, Saturday, Nov. 6. He left the scene of the accident Friday before police arrived.

Rogers was booked into the Fulton County Jail Saturday with charges of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury.

Rochester Rotary Club fruit sales Rochester Rotary Club is selling fruit again this year to raise funds to support its “Shoes for Students” project. Rochester Rotary Club provides shoes for students in need in Fulton County, regardless of which school they attend.

This year they are seeing an even greater need than previous years.
