at area nursing homes Nov. 9 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Veterans Day will be coming a couple days early for 19 military veterans residing at Wynnfield Crossing Senior Living and Lifecare Center of Rochester.

Starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, members of the LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post 36 will visit both locations, where they will hold a flag raising ceremony and present every veteran with certificates of appreciation. Mayor Ted Denton will also be in attendance.

“I don’t want vets forgotten at nursing homes,” said Post Commander Rob Beckman, who is in his third year as commander. “It means a lot to them.”

At Life Care Center, the legion will be joined by Kindred Hospice, who has been conducting Veterans Day services at various locations around northern Indiana for around 25 years, according to Chaplain Teri White.

In addition to the legion’s activities, Kindred Hospice volunteers will have a “missing man” or “fallen comrade” table setting, acknowledging prisoners of war and those missing in action. The table setting includes a plate sprinkled with salt, symbolizing the tears of loved ones; a white table cloth, representing service members’ pure intentions in answering their country’s call to arms; a single rose symbolizing the blood shed in sacrifice to ensure the freedom of the United States of America; a lit candle representing a light of hope to illuminate the missing’s way home; and other elements as

“It’s always humbling and emotional,” said White of the event, which also includes a medley of each military branch’s fight song, such as “The Marine’s Hymn” and “Anchors Away.”

One year, at an event in Marion, White recalled seeing a veteran, who had been nonverbal for a long time prior to the ceremony, sing along. “It’s just heartwarming.”

Kindred Hospice is presenting another such event at 3 p.m. at Moose Lodge 1107 in Rochester with the Grissom Air Force Base Honor Guard.

She noted how two residents stop every morning to salute the flag.

These sentiments are heightened at the Veterans Day event, however, and staff are similarly

affected. “The staff gets tearful for the pride in our residents,” said Thomas.

projects each year that made it to the state fair. I made my own clothes until I was 40. Then it became cheaper to buy them.”

Zentz has a double major in both home economics and art from Ball State University. She got her master’s in education from Indiana University.

“I’ve always loved fabric. When I was a child, my mother was a seamstress. When I was 5 and 6, I watched her sew prom and wedding dresses. When I was 7, Mom inherited my grandma’s treadle machine and let me create my own projects. Fabric is my comfort food.”

One of the things Zentz enjoyed most when she was teaching students at Caston was watching them grow. “I had them in both junior high and high school. I could see them mature as students and become better artists.”

When Zentz retired from teaching in 2010, she joined Heartland Art Gallery in Plymouth. “Now I am able to devote my time to my own artwork. And I also get the opportunity to teach classes there for beginning art students. I do a lot of mixed media classes. This past October I taught students how to make a clay art project.”

Zentz has always believed in continuing education. “Everyone can enjoy art. The adults who sign up for art classes definitely want to be there. I enjoy seeing their faces light up when they understand a concept for the first time. I believe in positive rewards. I’ll pick out their attributes first, before I make sugges-

tions on how they might improve a project.”

She and her husband Roger began traveling even before she retired from teaching. “I see the world with the eyes of an artist.

I remember visiting New York City and telling Roger to hang on to me. I was looking up at all the tall buildings and noticing their colors and perspective.”

After her husband passed away eight years ago, she began traveling with her sister Nancy.

“In the past 22 years, I’ve visited 66 countries and islands. This coming December Nancy and I are going on a world cruise for 4½ months.”

Being a widow is never an easy road. “My artwork is what kept me going. I also surrounded myself with caring friends at Heartland. They’re a group of sunny, supportive individuals.”

Right now, Zentz has an art piece on display at the 44th Elkhart Juried Regional. Showing her love of fabric, she entered a fabric collage titled “Morning Delight.” She received the David and Dawn Weed Purchase Award for the piece. “I’ve entered for the past five years and received a purchase award for four of those years.”

Zentz’s hobby is yardwork. She also enjoys flower gardening.

OBITUARIES Jackie C. Hoppenbrouwer Bookkeeper

Jackie C. Hoppenbrouwer, 83, Rochester, was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away on Friday, Nov. 4, 2022, at Life Care Center of Rochester.

On Dec. 24, 1938, Jackie Cecelia Stone was -$&.,( & born in Jacksonville, Fla. She was a treasured +233(1%528:(5 daughter of Jack and Teresa Wilson Stone.

Growing up she shared her childhood with a sister, Tessie.

In Waynesville, N.C., Jackie and Eddie Hoppenbrouwer were married on Feb. 4, 1978. They have shared 44 years of life’s adventures. Together they blended a beautiful family that included five wonderful children. Their family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of two more generations, including 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

As a bookkeeper, Jackie worked in their family’s automotive repair business known as Eddie’s Auto of Panacea, Fla. With a green thumb, Jackie enjoyed planting flowers to enhance the landscape of her home. To relax, she read novels and magazines. Nana Jackie cherished the time making memories with her grandchildren, looking forward to their visits.

Left to cherish Jackie’s memory are her husband, Eddie; daughter, Bonnie Bowyer and husband Wayne of Rochester; sons, Shane Johnson and wife Christine of Montross, Va., Gary Hoppenbrouwer and wife Stephanie of Dearborn, Mich., Terry Hoppenbrouwer and wife Deb of Panacea, Fla., and Traci Royster of Waynesville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, Luke and Courtney Bowyer, Kyle and Ashley Bowyer, Will and Morgan Strunk, Desiree’ and Harry Haskell III, Aubrey Sullivan and husband Keegan, Timothy Johnson, Kaitlyn Barnum and husband Justin, Hailey Johnson, Adam Hoppenbrouwer and wife Danielle and Joshua Hoppenbrouwer; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Jackie in death are her parents; daughter, Teresa Jameson; grandson, Christopher Johnson; and sister, Tessie Koontz.

Private family services will be held. The Good Family Funeral Home of Rochester has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Burial will be in Rochester IOOF Cemetery.

Morris D. Davis, 89, Rochester, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2022, at Life Care Center, Rochester.

He was born Sept.

He is survived by two sons, Roger Lee Davis and Mark Duane Davis, both of Florida, and his friends and work family at Rochester High School.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mirna Davis.

A celebration of life was held Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester.

Military honors was conducted by the Fulton County Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Army Honors Team. Interment was in the Florida National Cemetery.

Kitten M. Grimm

Kitten M. Grimm, 63, Rochester, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022, at Hickory Creek of Rochester.

She was born Jan. 3, 1959, in Tacoma, Wash. On Aug. 3, 2006, in Plymouth, she married Richard L. Grimm, who survives.

Indiana launches new education platform

Eligible families can now access the Indiana Learns family platform, an online portal where they can view their grant funds, see Learning Partner vendors and schedule tutoring services for their qualifying student. Indiana Learns is a new statewide grant program that provides families, demonstrating both financial and academic need, with up to $1,000 to spend on math and reading high-dosage tutoring and approved out-of-school academic programs for their students.

“We know that student learning really takes off when we have our schools and families working together,” said Dr. Katie Jenner, Indiana Secretary of Education.

“For some families, obtaining tutoring services for their child is not an option financially. Through Indiana Learns, additional tutoring opportunities are now available to more families to empower their children’s learning, with a specific focus on reading and math, which are essential for all future learning.

I encourage all eligible families to take full advantage of this new resource.”

Announced in August, the initiative’s goal is to increase access

to effective, out-of-school academic support to help fourth and fifth grade students recover from learning disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mind Trust is administering the operations of the program on behalf of the Indiana Department of Education.

Accessing the family platform Interested families can visit IndianaLearns.org to check if their student is eligible. Families will need to enter a student’s Student Test Number (STN) and date of birth to verify eligibility. Parents can locate their student’s STN on their ILEARN score report or by reaching out to their school’s registrar or office staff. If eligible, families will immediately be able to view available funds and schedule approved services after viewing multiple Learning Partners that can provide service in their area. Indiana Learns is continuing to receive applications and approve additional Learning Partners to serve students.

All qualifying students will have access to $500 to apply toward approved in-person or virtual tutoring opportunities listed in the online platform. Examples of qualifying expenses include: private tutoring, small group tutoring, or academic-

Local Vietnam War veteran continues to serve as legion chaplain %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU When Harry Migonis returned from Vietnam in 1968, he was sure he was done with the military forever. His legs were badly injured in an explosion when he drove an 8-ton tanker truck over a landmine at a checkpoint near Pleiku, and he still had years of surgery and physical therapy ahead of him.

He was 19 years old. “That was the last I wanted to hear about it,” recalled the 73-year-old.

Nevertheless, decades later, during a funeral in southern Illinois held for his brother-inlaw, also a veteran, he watched the local honor guard salute a fellow soldier and thought, “How can I get into that when I retire?”

In 2009, after driving trucks for over 30 years, Migonis did retire. Within a month he joined the Rochester VFW Post 1343 and has been a member ever since. He is also a member of the American Legion Post 36, where he currently serves as chaplain. He also still serves on the honor guard, though his war injuries have made this more difficult as he’s gotten old-

er. “I’m still hanging in there.”

As chaplain, he speaks at funerals and other events and is also there for legion members who need a sympathetic ear.

“Maybe it’s a sick vet or someone down and out, and we try to talk about that. … I’m here for whoever needs me.”

Harry Migonis is one of three brothers, the others are named Tom and Dick. “My parents had a sense of humor.” Tom, who has served in many capacities at Post 1343, including commander and quartermaster, is also a Vietnam veteran. In fact, while there, Tom used his in-country vacation time — or “R and R” — to visit Harry, who was stationed in another part of the country.

The elder brother, who was serving in the infantry, hitchhiked his way through dangerous country to see Harry in Pleiku. “That was pretty cool,” Harry recalled.

The brothers grew up in Chicago before moving to Cicero, Ill. However, their grandfather had a farm near Kewanna. Later, their father purchased land near Leiters Ford, which they inherited. “I’ve been here on and off since I was a kid,” said Harry.

From a young age, Harry showed an aptitude for working on cars and trucks, so it was not a surprise when, after he was drafted in 1966 and went through his advanced infantry training, he was assigned to the 523rd Transportation Company.

Migonis traveled to Vietnam by ship, which took 30 days. The 523rd was experimenting with the use of large, 8-ton trucks, called “Goers” (Go-ability with Overall Economy and Reliability), and he was assigned the task of driving these vehicles over rough roads to supply highly flammable helicopter fuel to bases in the field.

After 8 months of driving and only 3 months left before shipping out back home, Migonis had not encountered a single ambush. Neither had anyone else he knew. “I was the first one who really got hurt.”

He vividly recalls the moments before the explosion “like it was yesterday.” He and his partner were at a checkpoint watching soldiers sweep for land mines on the road ahead.

Then he was waved through, and as they drove on, his partner — a sergeant with a dry sense of humor — said something funny, he leaned back laughing and at the same time an explosion tore through the bottom of the truck.

“The MEDEVAC landed in front of me … the windshield was black from smoke … “ His memories are spotty after that, but he recalled being part of a group of other wounded soldiers moving to a field hospital and another facility before making

the nine day journey back to a hospital in Pennsylvania.

In spite of his wounds, Migonis counts himself as lucky for many reasons. First, his time in Vietnam was, he said, “like a resort compared to those infantry guys. I take my hat off to those guys.” Second, his legs were spread wide to operate the pedals of the truck and the explosion went between them.

Third, because he was laughing, he leaned back out of the way of the blast. Fourth, the explosion did not ignite the helicopter fuel he was transporting.

Roughly 80,000 military personnel were killed in Vietnam, and Migonis was not one of them. He never really thought of himself as a military-type, he said; however, “when they called, I went.”

Since joining the VFW/Legion, Migonis has attended every Veteran’s Day service held at the Fulton County Courthouse. This year will be different, however, as he will be visiting his grandson’s school in Schererville, where he will be honored for his service along with other veterans. “You’ve got to do things for your grandson,” he commented fondly.

Shifting Veterans Day to a different day proved unpopular, though, and another law signed in 1975 returned the holiday to its original date — the 11th day of the 11th month — starting in 1978.

What else is there to know about Veterans Day? There is no apostrophe in the term Veterans Day. It is a day honoring all veterans and does not “belong” to one or more veterans as an apostrophe might suggest, according to Lange’s article.

Veterans Day is different from Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May as a holiday to remember those who gave their lives for America, particularly in battle or from wounds suffered in battle. Veterans Day honors all those who have served the country in war or peace, dead or alive, although it’s largely intended to thank living veterans for their sacrifices, according to the article.

Other countries also mark their own veterans days. For instance, Canada and Australia both call Nov. 11 “Remembrance Day.” Great Britain calls it Remembrance Day, too, and observes it on the Sunday closest to Nov. 11, Lange noted.

Brelynna “Bre” Felix was “loving, carefree, gentle, goofy” among other things, remembers her aunt, Ali Steyn.

Steyn made the comments to InkFreeNews regarding the late Tippecanoe Valley Middle School student who passed away a year ago today.

“She loved her family, friends, her dog Mia and pretty much any pet she came in contact with,” said Steyn. “She was passionate about life and found joy in the simplest things. (Pickles, Takis, Crocs, Monster energy drinks and tie-dye were her love languages).”

“She loved to laugh and play basketball, but annoying her brothers took rank,” Steyn added.

Felix, 12, was killed on Nov. 5, 2021, in a hit-and-run accident north of Akron on SR 19 in Fulton County in which her brother, Isaiah Felix, was also injured. The driver in that wreck, Gage Rogers, 27, Akron, recently pled guilty to two felony charges stemming from the accident and is set to be sentenced in January.

Though Felix’s life ended too young, her interests and passions are to still be remembered through several memorials.

As Felix played basketball with TVMS, the school “will be honoring her life by presenting a memorial plaque at a basketball game,” said Steyn. That’s to occur early next year.

Felix had also talked about playing basketball in the future at Grace College where family members had attended.

Steyn said the family plans to announce a Grace College basketball scholarship that they have created in her honor in the spring.

Felix’s love of animals is also to be memorialized, said Steyn.

The family plans to continue the tradition of a yearly fundraiser and donation to the Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County to mark Felix’s birthday of March 2 that they started around what would have been her 13th birthday earlier this year.

Steyn considers her niece’s legacy to “forever be her heart.”

“She was always helpful and thinking of other’s feelings before her own,” said Steyn. “She never wanted to leave people out of things in fear of them being sad.”

“She was always up for an ad-

venture, even if it meant sitting in the salon for four hours just to get Chick-fil-A and Starbucks afterwards,” Steyn continued.

“The love Brelynna had for us, her family, will be felt for the rest of our lives.”

Steyn said the family hopes Fulton Superior Court Judge Gregory Heller is “fair” regarding his sentencing of Rogers.

“Although, no amount of time could ever make up for such an amazing girl losing her life at such a young age, we hope the judge is fair in the January sentencing,” she said.

“We appreciate all of the love and prayers we have felt throughout this first year without her,” added Steyn.

Steyn said she believes Felix would want her family and friends “to live their lives in honor of her.”

She would also want them “to live life to the fullest, be happy, and not dwell on the hurt and pain we are feeling now,” said Steyn.

Christkindlmarkt set for Nov. 18-20 Christkindlmarkt is a Christmas market with a German theme which starts from 4-10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20. The event will occur on Court Street and East 5th Street in downtown Peru. There will be an ice skating rink, vendor market with Christmas décor, carved wood animals and laser cut Christmas items, candles, live wreaths, poinsettias and greenery, decorative greenery pots, ornaments and other wonderful items.

The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction is launching a new program to support Hoosier youth in building a stronger sense of self through the “Believe in You” campaign.

The campaign includes resources focusing on specific topics and behaviors that have been identified as risk areas for alcohol and substance misuse, such as developing mental strength, positive thinking, coping techniques and self-control.

Community groups or organizations that engage with youth are invited to consider adopting the program and encouraging youth to opt in.

Youth who engage with the Believe in You campaign will receive a series of weekly text messages that provide a mix of verbal and written support, education, polls, questions and links to a video portal. The videos focus on specific topics identified

by Hoosier youth as critical points of importance to them and their mental wellness, including mental well-being support, inspirational stories and helpful information from mentors, health professionals, peers and influential members of the community.

As an added layer of encourage-

ment, youth who take the campaign’s challenge to have a sponsor to guide them through the program may be eligible to receive an additional incentive. At the end of each four-week challenge period, participants meet with their sponsor to discuss the program’s messaging and takeaways. In exchange, each participant may be eligible to receive a $10 gift card for their participation. While having a sponsor is encouraged for the campaign, it is not required for youth to opt in.

+ + 9(7(5$16 '$< Sandhill cranes flying through Thousands of sandhill cranes have been moving through the area, visiting the shallow marshes at the Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area, Medaryville.

The birds migrate October through December, reaching peak numbers in late November or early December.

The peak last year was more than 28,600 sandhill cranes, which were counted the day of Nov. 23 by staff of the Indiana Department of Natu-

ral Resources, who count the cranes one day each week during the migration. This fall so far, cranes numbered 2,069 on Oct. 4; 3,485 on Oct. 11; 3,804 on Oct. 18; and 4,881 on Oct. 25.

The crane spectacle is best seen from the observation platform at the Sandhill Crane Observation Area, according to the DNR. A few stationary viewing scopes are available, but bringing your own spotting scope

or binoculars is recommended. If you are photographing cranes, your most powerful zoom lens will be handy because trying to get too close to the birds will spook them, the DNR says.

During the day, cranes can be spotted feeding and dancing in nearby harvested farm fields. But the DNR recommends sunrise and sunset as the best times to view the birds. In the early morning, huge flocks rise and fly from their roosting marshes. About an hour before sundown, flocks of cranes kite into the refuge near the observation area from all directions, gabbing and socializing before going to roost for the night.

State agency wins marketing awards IN Indiana open-source campaign.

Visit Indiana also took home a gold award (the second highest) in the marketing category of digital media/web video for the “There is More to Discover IN Indiana” tourism video.

On June 8, Visit Indiana and the Indiana Destination Development Corp. launched the IN Indiana marketing campaign to tell the Hoosier state’s story. Visit Indiana developed an extensive customizable toolkit of resources available free of charge to every business, small town, big city and destination in the state.

“The IN Indiana campaign is an easily adaptable message com-

munities, businesses and universities, large and small, can utilize as creatively as they want,” Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch said in a news release. “The IDDC staff worked incredibly hard on this campaign, and it is gratifying to see Visit Indiana’s efforts being rewarded through multiple MarCom awards.”

Visit Indiana received another platinum award in the social campaign category of digital media/ social media for the Pie Day-to-Pi Day campaign. From Jan. 23 (National Pie Day) through February (National Pie Month) to March 14 (Pi Day), Visit Indiana teamed up with the Indiana Foodways

leave such a meeting to lead one soul to Christ. Philip obeyed the Lord and found an Ethiopian, undoubtedly a proselyte to the Jewish faith, a man who was a high officer in his land. We see in this event the factors necessary for effective witness for Christ.

First, The Man of God. Philip was obedient to the Spirit, going where God led him. He knew Christ as his own Savior. God’s method for winning others does not use organizational machinery, worldly attractions, or high-powered promotion.

God uses people — dedicated men and women who will obey the Spirit. Philip was the kind of evangelist who was willing to leave the public

meeting with its excitement to help a soul find peace in a private place where only God could see.

Second, The Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is the Lord of the harvest, and it’s through him that we have the power to witness (Acts 1:8). The Spirit opened the way for Philip to come to the man; He opened the scriptures to the seeking sinner; and he opened the sinner’s heart to the Savior. A man cannot be saved who does not understand what he is doing, and only the Spirit can teach the sinner the truths of the Gospel. When the Spirit brings a prepared servant and a contrite sinner together, there will be a harvest.

Third, The Word of God. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God,” says Romans 10:17. Isaiah 53 was the chapter Philip used (Acts 8:32-33), that wonderful picture of the Lamb of God; from that chapter Philip preached Christ. He began where the man was and took him through the Scriptures, explaining who Jesus was and what he had done.

There can be no real conversion apart from the word of God. Consider these Scriptures: John 5:24; Ephesians 1:12-14; 1 Thessalonians 2:1-6; 2 Thessalonians 3:1; 2 Timothy 4:1-5; Titus 1:3. The personal witness that finally bears fruit is the witness that plants the seed of the word and exalts Jesus Christ.

The Ethiopian proved his faith by his baptism, in obedience to the word of God. Philip was caught away for a ministry elsewhere; and the Ethiopian went on his way rejoicing. When Philip preached Christ in the city, there was great joy (see Acts 8:8), and when he presented Christ in the desert, he sent the new believer on his way rejoicing. Joy is one of the evidences of true conversion (see Luke 15:5-7, 9-10, 23-24, 32).

Area schools salute veterans %\ 0$5< %(7+ 63$/',1* 6WDII :ULWHU Area schools are planning their own salutes to veterans in honor of Veterans Day. Veterans, students, teachers, parents and the community will be brought together during ceremonies, songs, speeches, lunches and ice cream socials.

Such special events are aimed at helping youth understand that Nov. 11 is not “just another day,” said Cathy Olson, a retired veteran and special education teacher at Tippecanoe Valley Middle School, who is planning a program at her school.

“It’s important kids understand why they have their freedoms,” she said.

Rochester Schools At Rochester Middle School, Riddle Elementary and Columbia Elementary, students may invite a veteran in their life — a grandparent, parent, relative or friend — to share a free lunch with them on Thursday, Nov. 10.

At Columbia, local photographer Bailey Warren has volunteered to capture images of the students with their veterans.

Also at Columbia, at 6 p.m.

Nov. 10, the first-grade classes will hold their annual “Salute to Our Veterans” musical program, during which veterans in attendance will be recognized.

Afterward, the parent-teacher organization will hold an ice cream social in the cafeteria.

Veterans will receive a special pin and a free cup of ice cream.

Caston Schools Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Alan Miller, an area veteran, will be the guest speaker at Caston School Corp.’s Veterans Day program at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11.

Stuber, who organizes the program, said it’s an all-school event in which junior/senior high school students participate, such as by escorting visiting veterans, and elementary students create artwork that is then given to veterans. After the program, veterans are invited to eat a lunch prepared by high school students.

Tippy Valley Schools The Tippecanoe Valley Middle School program will feature guest speaker Ric Fouts, who heads the Fulton County Veterans Service Office. Members of the Leroy C. Shelton American Legion Post 36, Rochester, will be on hand to conduct a flagfolding ceremony. The school’s band and choir also will perform.

Veterans, parents and the community are invited to attend the program, which will start at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 11, in the gymnasium. Refreshments will be served afterward in the cafeteria.

At Akron Elementary, the third-grade classes will perform a short program of songs, followed by an ice cream social, said Principal Scott Sterk. The program begins at 1:30 p.m.

Local veterans, other groups mark Veterans Day Rain or shine, the lawn on the west side of the Fulton County Courthouse in downtown Rochester is where area veterans will gather to officially commemorate Veterans Day. The approximately half-hour ceremony will start at 11 a.m.

Friday, Nov. 11.

Opening the ceremony will be singer Erica Yates, Roann, who will sing the national anthem.

Area Boy Scouts typically lead those assembled in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. This year,

Rochester Mayor Ted Denton is scheduled to deliver remarks, and the Fulton County Honor Guard will play taps and fire a threevolley salute.

Afterward, a free chili lunch will be served to veterans and their families at the Rochester American Legion Post.

At 4 p.m., the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1343 in Rochester will serve a free dinner to veterans and their families.

The Fulton County Public Library in Rochester is planning a veterans-themed display that will include highlighting Operation Green Light, a program spreading in communities across the country. The effort aims to draw awareness to veterans, the challenges they face and the resources available to them by encouraging people to shine a green light.

In late October, the Rochester library hosted speaker and author Dr. Lori Goss-Reaves, Fort Wayne, where she shared memories of her father, who was killed in action in Vietnam. Her book,

“Kiss Lori for Me,” is available at the library and its Fulton and Aubbee branches.

Also at the Aubbee branch, packets of crafts and coloring pages are available for children to learn about Veterans Day and Remembrance Day. The Kewanna Union Township Public Library will be hosting a “Thanking Our Veterans Reception” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10. All veterans, family members of veterans, those currently serving in the military and anyone else who would like to honor veterans are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

The Kewanna library will host a talk at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, by author James F. Walsh of Culver, who will share his memories serving as a staff sergeant during the Korean War. The Kewanna Union Township

Rinehart donates his time to American Legion

That was good news to Mike Rinehart of Rochester, who had been a Sons of the American Legion member. “I jumped right in,” he recalled, and he currently serves as financial officer and post adjutant of American Legion Post 36 in Rochester.

Rinehart is originally from Monon; however, his wife, Michelle, is from Rochester. The couple has lived in the area for roughly 20 years.

Rinehart graduated early from high school to find few employment opportunities in Monon apart from a trailer factory, so he joined the Army, where he served in and artillery unit in the 5th Infantry.

His responsibilities involved “fire direction control,” mapping out targets for the gunners. “I enjoyed my time in the military,” he said. “I met a lot of cool people.” He served from 1978-79.

Unfortunately, an injury to his foot led to his honorable discharge.

Because of disabilities, Rinehart said, “I had nothing but time. …

Now I donate all of my time at the legion.”

When he first learned he was unable to join the legion, Rinehart joined the SAL after researching his family history and discovering his great-great grandfather, Allen Rinehart had served with the 86th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers in the Union Army during the Civil War. He has been in SAL for five years and served as second vice commander.

Rinhehart has a family Bible, written in German, which dates back to his first American-born relative, David Rinehart, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1790.

Now, as Post 36 financial officer and adjutant, Rinehart fulfills duties similar to those of a first sergeant on a military base. Primarily, he takes care of membership questions. “If I don’t have the answers I get the answers,” he said. “A lot of it involves tracking things down on computer and talking to people at the state office.” He also serves as secretary at meetings.

The legion offers a number of insurance plans to veterans at competitive rates and can help vets get the information they need.

The legion also offers wheelchairs and walkers at no charge and has aluminum ramps available for veterans’ homes. The banquet hall is also available and has been used at no charge for many events.

“We’re here to help other veterans,” he added, which primarily entails the camaraderie of people who understand something about being in the military, an increasingly rare thing at a time when less than 1% of the US population serves.

As financial officer, Rinehart handles donations, expenses and the post’s bank accounts, “a numbers game.”

Rinehart noted the last post adjutant, John Lybarger, held the position for 15 years. “I’ve got a lot to

learn. I’m just getting my feet wet.

I’d like to become as knowledgeable as I can about what I do.”

When not at the legion, Rinehart enjoys outdoor activities, particularly fishing. He and Michelle have four kids, eight grandkids and one great-grandchild.

Donato touts state’s responsible spending In a recent press release from District 18 State Senator Stacey Donato, she said, “Indiana is consistently recognized as one of the most fiscally responsible and business-friendly states in the country, in large part because of our steadfast commitment to operating within our means.”

According to Donato, “Here in Indiana, we balance budgets and stay committed to our priorities, including investing in important public needs like schools and roads, maintaining a favorable tax climate and paying off debt.

“For example, we continue to aggressively pay down our outstanding obligations to the Pre-1996 Teachers’ Retirement Fund, so it doesn’t remain hanging over the heads of Hoosier taxpayers. We were pleased to have recently paid down an additional $2.5 billion this year.

Once this fund is fully financially self-sustaining, Indiana

will have $1 billion a year freed up in our state budget.

Because we operate within our means, we were also able to pass House Enrolled Act 1002 to phase down Indiana’s income-tax rate to 2.9%, which is tied for the lowest rate in the nation among states with an in-

Ginger Slisher crowned 2023 Miss Cardinal Ginger Slisher of Fulton was crowned 2023 Miss Cardinal at a competition held Oct. 15 at Havens Auditorium on the IU Kokomo campus. Slisher was chosen over six other candidates, earning a $300 academic scholarship and an opportunity to compete in the Miss Indiana competition.

The competition included a social impact pitch and onstage interview, as well as a talent competition, in which Slisher, an FFA member, recited Paul Harvey’s “So God Made A Farmer” speech, which was first given at a 1978 FFA convention.

Miss Cardinal and Miss Cardinal’s Outstanding Teen is a scholarship program and competition within the Miss Amer-

ica Organization. Titleholders represent the area in the Miss Indiana and Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen competition with the goal of representing Indiana at Miss America and Miss America’s Outstanding Teen. Miss Cardinal is an open preliminary competition, anyone throughout the state who meets the eligibility requirements is able to compete.

—o— Fruit turns into shoes. The Rochester Rotary Club is selling fruit again this year to raise money to support its “Shoes for Students” project. The club provides shoes for students in need in Fulton County, regardless of which school they attend. Rotarians say this year they are seeing an even greater need than before.

Indiana Historical Society’s Festival of Trees is for all ages The Indiana Historical Society’s 2022 Festival of Trees is making spirits bright as one of central Indiana’s biggest holiday traditions for families and people of all ages.

From Nov. 11 through Jan. 7, visitors can take part in the annual holiday extravaganza at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, located at 450 W. Ohio St. in Indianapolis. This year’s winter wonderland features 75 elaborately decorated trees representing individuals, families and organizations from around Indiana.

Whenever they visit, guests will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite tree. They will also have the opportunity to help a child in need with The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree.

must-attend annual event, and we are so excited to bring it back to the Indiana Historical Society,” said IHS President and CEO Jody Blankenship. “As is tradition, we will have an amazing centerpiece tree and dozens of elaborately decorated trees.

We’re pleased to be making spirits bright while also remaining an affordable option for friends and families alike. There really is something for all ages — our youngest guests enjoy hunting for Hoosier Buddy (our Elf on a Shelf) and 10 hidden pickle ornaments hidden in trees around the building as well as looking at all the trees. We also have special programs to get people into the holiday spirit.”

Visitors can take part in scavenger hunts for The Elf on the Shelf or the Weihnachtzgurken(10 pickle ornaments hidden in trees throughout the building). And as guests wander through the building, they can sing holiday favorites

in the Cole Porter Room, with Caroling through the Holidays, sponsored by Citizens Energy Group. In addition, visitors can check out a recreated scene from “A Christmas Story,” complete with pink bunny onesie, sponsored by Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre.

Throughout Festival of Trees, the Stardust Terrace Café by Jonathan Byrd’s will offer extended hours and additional menu options, including holiday-inspired treats and tasty specialty beverages for both children and grown-ups. Members receive a 10 percent discount on café purchases.

Back by popular demand, Twilight Tuesdays offer an after-hours experience from 5-8 p.m. for those who wish to see the trees by night. And with paid admission, those 21 and over can sample a selection of Heaven Hill Brands bourbon.
