The fairly new Fulton County Forensic Center allows the Fulton County Coroner’s Office to operate in a single location. Coroner Jeri Good said the above of the center, located inside the Fulton County Jail complex at 2006 Sweetgum Road, Rochester. Good and her staff started using it at the end of 2021. Previously, elements of the office were scattered around the county, she said. “We had no (formal) office,” she said. “Whatever coroner was in office would use their own office as their place of business and then they’d use their own vehicle and ... we partnered with Woodlawn Hospital to utilize (its) two-person refrigeration system (to store bodies).” The center includes a conference room where Good and her staff, Margo Layman, Gail Karas, Todd Bailey and Jon Good, can meet to-
gether or with families of the deceased. A main feature of the center is the examination room. It has an “emergency (cleaning) station” for staff to use if they come into contact with contaminated items, said Good. The “procedure area,” as Good called it, allows for normal examination of a body on table. It’s also ready for any autopsies, although Good says none have occurred there thus far as the coroner’s office works with the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center out of Allen County to conduct them. If that were to change in the future, the room is ready for those more formal procedures. There are hand-washing stations in the examination room, as well as places to put biohazardous items and store blood and DNA which needs to be checked. The center has a cooler with table space for five bodies. There’s also a parking bay to store the new coroner’s van for transporting bodies. Good said federal COVID-19 relief money paid for a large portion of the vehicle, which “went into service in June of 2021.” She’s worked to get grants to pay for other items in the center.
“We’re trying to save as much money as we can,” noted Good of getting grants. In the bay, there’s a lift to help move bodies in and out of the van. The center has gotten quite a bit of use, as Good said calls for service have increased by “over 300%” over approximately the last decade. She attributes that in part to people not seeking out medical care when they should. Numbers for 2023 currently stand at 60 deaths. “We’re just grateful for this facility and we’re highly complimented on it,” said Good of the center. Rochester Fire Chief Butler ‘felt a calling’ to be in military By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Tom Butler says he “felt ... a calling and a certain purpose” to be in the military. Butler, who’s served as the Rochester Fire Department’s chief since 2008, was a military medic for 24 years, with stints in both the Army and Indiana Army National Guard. He spent two tours in the Middle East. He decided he wanted to enter military service after graduating from Rochester High School in 1983. “I had a long conversation with my father,” said Butler. “My father was in the Air Force just for his obligated term, and he told me he thought I was making the right decision by choosing a branch of service, but he wasn’t going to give me a lot of guidance.” “So I had an uncle who was in the Army during Vietnam ... I wanted to be a medic. There was no question ... So the Army made the most sense with me being a combat medic,” Butler continued. Butler’s basic training was at
Fort Dix in New Jersey. Following that, he trained as a combat medic at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. Butler was then sent to Germany with the 583rd ambulance company, spending 18 months there “support(ing) all the training sites in Germany and ... field artillery and the infantry.” He went to Fort Devens in Massachusetts, next, serving as a line medic for West Point freshmen in basic training. Butler then spent time in Honduras and South Korea before heading back to Fort Devens and working with West Point again. He met his wife Samantha then, who served in the Army with medical supply. Today, they’ve been married 33 years and have two children, Alison and Daniel. The Butlers were deployed together as newlyweds in Desert Storm to the Middle East. “We were together the whole time until the ground war started,” said Butler. “She stayed back with the combat support hospital. I went forward with what was called a fast team. We

After his six and a half months there, Butler returned to Fort Devens. “I got transferred then to ... with a medical coverage, so I got to go up and serve the president of the United States,” Butler continued. “I did four missions up at Kennebunkport ... So we’d be up there a couple days before the president. We’d arrive. I did get to meet Mrs.(Barbara) Bush and the president, so that was kind of neat.” Butler then got out of the Army, returning home to Indiana and joining the Indiana Army National Guard.

Butler was deployed to Iraq in 2005 with the Guard. “We had the Camp Liberty, which was the air base. We had an aid station and ambulance complement,” he said. “I was also responsible for the U.S. embassy in the Green Zone in Baghdad. I had an aid station within the embassy and we took care of the dignitaries or any emergencies that would occur there.” Butler noted he “lost (a) soldier” while overseas then, Staff Sgt. Richard Blakley. “(He) actually was shot twice,” said Butler. “He was shot just before Easter and then actually Gov. (Mitch) Daniels came over and gave him his Purple Heart, and then shortly after that on June 6, 2006, Sgt. Blakley unfortunately was fatally shot while on patrol.” After his one-year deployment, Butler returned to Indiana, retiring from the Guard in 2007. His military awards include a Bronze Star, expert field medical badge and combat medical badge. Butler returned to his work with the RFD, having first started as a volunteer fireman around 1994 and been hired full time in 1997. He said the fire department helped to “fill that void” of serving others that he experienced after leaving the military. Butler said he definitely would serve in the military again if he could. “If I had to do it over again, I would. I don’t have any regrets about any of my time serving,” he said.

Let’s study the Bible Could this be the Messiah? Read: John 7:25-53 “And Many of the people believed in Him, and said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?” (John 7:31)
By THE REV. RON PURKEY
One ritual during the Feast of Tabernacles was the pouring out of water in the temple. It was a reminder that God gave Israel water in the wilderness. Water for drinking pictures the Holy Spirit who is given to those who trust Christ. The world is thirsty and can find its thirst quenched only by coming to Christ. The seventh day of this Jewish feast was a great day of celebration. (The eighth day was one of “solemn assembly” — Leviticus 23:36; see Numbers 29:35). Each morning of the feast, at the time of the sacrifice, the priests would
draw water in a golden vessel from the Pool of Siloam and carry it to the temple to be poured out. This commemorated the wonderful supply of water God gave the Jews in the wilderness. This seventh day was known as “The Great Hosannah” and climaxed the feast. It takes little imagination to grasp what must have happened when Jesus cried out, “If any man thirst, let him come unto Me and drink!” (verse 37) as the priests poured out the water. Christ was the rock out of which the waters flowed (Exodus 17:1-7; 1 Corinthians 10:4). He was smitten on the cross that the Spirit of life might be given to save and satisfy thirsty sinners. In the Bible, water for cleansing symbolizes the Word of God (John 13:1-17; 15:3); water for drinking represents the Spirit of God (John 7:37-38). Instead of heeding his gracious invitation to come, the people argued, and there was division among them. Some believed in him, some rejected (see Matthew 10:31-39 and Luke 12:51-52). The soldiers could not arrest him because his word gripped their hearts (verse 46). Because the religious leaders rejected Christ, they shut the door of salvation to others who followed
their bad example (Matthew 23:13). A man named Nicodemus enters the picture again (John 3:121), and this time we see him defending Christ’s legal privileges. In John 3, he was in the darkness of confusion; but here he is experiencing the dawn of conviction, willing to give Christ a fair chance. Because of this, Nicodemus learned the truth, for a willingness to obey the Word of God is the secret of learning God’s truth (verse 17). In John 19 we see Nicodemus in the daylight of confession, openly identifying himself with Christ. How did he come to make this decision? He studied the Word of God and asked for God to teach him. The leaders told him, “Search and look!” and that is just what he did. Anyone who will read and obey the Word of God will move out of darkness into God’s marvelous light. Jesus is the Messiah; Jesus is God’s only begotten Son; and Jesus is the Savior! We can believe in him. Read Ron Purkey’s Bible study online free at rcpbibleoutlines. com. Fulton County Chamber welcomes Wild Aesthetics By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Fulton County has its first medspa. On Friday, Oct. 20, the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce had a ribbon cutting for Wild Aesthetics, located at 2317 E. SR 14, Apartment 300, Rochester. It’s run by Sarah Wild. Through Wild Aesthetics, customers can get Botox and fillers, as well as B12 shots and weightloss treatment. “I’m big on medical grade (skin care), doing stuff that is highly researched and ... with good results,” said Wild. She got interested in medical aesthetics after her nurse practitioner friend did Botox on Wild. Wild said she’s “entrepreneurial minded” and wanted to start a business, which gave her flexibility to care for her young children.
“I fell in love with the aesthetics world. I’ve always cared about beauty and clean health and just taking care of your body, so it just all kind of meshed together,” she said. Before the ribbon cutting, she thanked those who have supported her in getting the business started and noted it was “super special” to start the business in her hometown.
Wild said her goal is to “enhance (customers’) natural beauty.” “I’m not in the business of making people look fake or different or change who you are, but just really helping enhance your natural beauty and just help you feel the best about yourself,” she said. To set up an appointment or learn more, people may call (727) 542-6015 or visit wildaesthetics. org.

‘The Art of Tom Hartzell’ retrospective celebrates 50 years An exhibition spanning 50 years of art by Rochester’s Tom Hartzell kicked off with a reception Friday, Nov. 3, at Fulton County Public Library’s Rochester Branch, 320 W. Seventh St. The show will remain on view through Saturday, Nov. 30. Rochester’s Tom Hartzell learned to love art combined with words as a small boy. He would sometimes fake illness to stay
home from school so his mother would read to him from her collection of richly illustrated books. His visual imagination was formed by the great children’s books of the early 20th century: Jean de Brunhoff’s “Babar the Elephant,” Hugh Lofting’s “Dr. Doolittle” and the illustrations of Arthur Rackham, Maxfield Parrish and Norman Rockwell. As a young adult, Hartzell
taught children’s literature at what is now Manchester University. He also spent several years as staff cartoonist for a West Michigan newspaper, where his barbed caricatures frequently ruffled the feathers of local politicians. But mostly Hartzell painted for the love of it, sometimes from life, mostly from his imagination. A lover of classic poetry, he created a series of comic parodies with matching illustrations. He also created a series of illustrations for non-existent books,
featuring anthropomorphic animals in very human situations. Many of his works were created for friends and family, to mark special milestones. Hartzell has a great sense of fun and an eye for beauty. His work is whimsical, yet grounded. It’s conservative in the best sense, rooted in his love for Midwestern domesticity: the country road, the corner store and the well-provisioned dining room table. This retrospective includes watercolor, egg tempera and oil
paintings. The works represented span from “Geraniums” in 1973 to “The Wolf,” painted last year when Hartzell was 87.

HONORING ALL THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED
Druding worked ‘to save lives’ as Air Force medic By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer When Kevin Druding decided to join the military two years after high school, he knew he didn’t want to be a soldier directly. “I wanted to save lives rather than take lives,” he put it. Druding of Rochester spent 21 years as a medical service specialist with the Air Force and Air Force Reserve. He hails from Arizona, graduating from Mingus Union High School in Cottonwood, Ariz. Druding said he was primed for serving others early, having been a Boy Scout. Upon entering the military, he trained at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss., and would spend six years of active duty there. He then switched to the Air Force Reserve and was stationed in places including England, Japan and Hawaii. That time included being “activated for Desert Shield,” he said. “I was discharged under Desert Storm and I received the National Defense ribbon and I also
got an Air Force achievement medal,” Druding said. “We worked right alongside of nurses and doctors,” he said of his medical work. “I started IVs, I gave intramuscular injections. I defibrillated patients. I intubated patients.” “I did everything that an emergency medical technician does, more like an actual paramedic,” he continued. “I worked in a coronary care unit ... and emergency room ... and I was actually taking care of patients that (had) received combat wounds.” Druding said he felt called to join the military. “You feel a calling. It’s something that comes from the inside and from the heart,” he said. Druding moved to Rochester after his wife Vicki passed away two years ago. She had been from Middlebury. “I fell in love with the small town of Rochester, with their ability to put God and country first,” he said. “It touched my soul, and so I transferred my membership to the VFW and American Legion out here.” Druding now serves as second

Events planned Continued from page 8 and anyone else that would like to honor the heroes are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served. Kewanna Union Township is located at 210 E. Main St., Kewanna. For more information call (574) 653-2011 or email kewanna.lib.in.us. The American Legion will be conducting a ceremony at the Rochester Courthouse at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11. Mayor Ted Denton, and Beckman will be speaking, along with Pastor Kurt Nichols, Yates, will perform the National Anthem, and the Fulton County Honor Guard will fire a three gun volley, followed by
Taps. The ceremony will conclude prior to the 11 a.m. courthouse bell chime. “We like to have the ceremony done as the courthouse bell chimes, stated Beckman. Following the courthouse ceremony the VFW Post 1343, Rochester, will be having a chili lunch for veterans and their families. The American Legion Post 36, Rochester, will be serving a turkey dinner from 4-7 p.m. for veterans and their families.

Monica Clennon is a 4th-generation veteran By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Monica Clennon is a fourth-generation veteran. Clennon, who lives near Talma, followed in the footsteps of her great-grandfather, grandfather and father by entering the military. While they all served in the Army, however, she picked the Navy. She’s originally from Fulton County, being born in Akron. Clennon was raised in Porter County after her family moved there for a job opportunity for her father when she was a baby. Clennon opted to join the military in her twenties as a way to pay for her college degree. “I certainly enjoyed traveling ... and I needed to learn something that would be marketable (for a job),” she said. “So the Navy offered me a lot more training, and a lot more traveling, and I finished my degree and ... got to see the world, or at least part of it, anyway.” Clennon went to Recruit Training Command in Orlando, Fla., for the eight weeks of her basic training. Her next stop was at apprenticeship school in Meridian, Miss.

NAVY VETERAN — Monica Clennon is shown during her time in the Navy. Photo provided by Monica Clennon. She was trained as a personnel specialist, doing administrative work. She was first stationed in Guam for two and a half years, working with “people’s service records, or their pay records, ID cards, that kind of thing.” She went next to Bremerton, Wash., for a little more than four years and spent several after that in Jacksonville, Fla. She switched to the Navy Reserve after that. “By that time, I had a spouse and a couple of kids,” said Clennon. She’s been married to Chuck Clennon for 38 years. They have two children: Tim, a current member of the Navy himself, and Amanda, with three grandchildren as well. Chuck worked as civilian firefighter on military bases while Monica was in the Navy. She would serve a total of 22 years in the military and also travel to Japan, the Philippines, North and South Korea, Italy and Spain while in service. “I didn’t finish my degree after I had retired ... and that’s kind of weird because I joined the Navy so I could get my degree, but life plans change,” she said. “I just enjoyed (serving in the military) and I stuck around, so I kept re-enlisting.” “I enjoyed the camaraderie with the people that I worked with, and we had plenty of fun times and good times,” she continued. “I certainly enjoyed the structure ... and it’s where you can depend on the people you work with.” Clennon now serves as historian for American Legion Post 36 in Rochester, archiving items, and Continued on page 3

Schools plan programs in honor of veterans day Local schools are planning special programs and luncheons in honor of Veterans Day. This year it is observed on Saturday, Nov. 11. It is a national holiday honoring all veterans past and present for their patriotism to serve and sacrifice for our freedoms. Area schools have planned and are prepared to honor the men and women who defend our country. Columbia Elementary Students will be sharing lunch with a veteran they invited on Thursday, Nov. 9. The first-grade students will be celebrating Veterans Day at 6 p.m. with a special music program on that day as well. Riddle Elementary Students in grades second through fourth will be sharing lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10, with a veteran they invited. Rochester Middle School Students will be sharing lunch with a veteran they have invited on Wednesday, Nov. 8, and will be serving cupcakes after lunch. Rochester High School The high school will be cel-
ebrating from 11 a.m. to noon on Friday, Nov. 10, in the high school gymnasium. Guest speakers will include Rudy Yakym, Second District U.S. Congressman, and Mayor Ted Denton. There will be a military flag folding ceremony, a presentation of awards (quilt of Honor) by Shoda Beehler, City Clerk-Treasurer, and performances by the Rochester High School Band and Choir. Akron Elementary The third-grade students will be hosting a Veterans Day program at 1:30 p.m. on Thurs. Nov. 9. They will be performing songs and speaking. A student in fourth and fifth grade will be playing piano and student council members will be speaking. The program will be followed by an ice cream social for the veterans. Tippecanoe Valley Middle School A Veterans Day program will be held by the student council members at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10. The community is invited. All student body groups will participate. There will be performances by the band and choir.
“it’s nice to be recognized for what (military members have done) for the benefits and the freedoms and all the luxuries that we have as Americans.” “It’s humbling because there are many veterans that obviously went way before me and obviously some of them who were injured, some of them who didn’t come home,” she said, noting especially the sacrifices of those who served in World War II. “Tom Brokaw said it the best: World War II citizens are the greatest generation and the greatest generation gave us what we have. I want to continue on with that,” she said.
You Get You Won’t Won’t Get
The program will last approximately 30-45 minutes, and will be followed by an ice cream social for the veterans.

She was responsible for obtaining a vehicle to transport the Guard members around and getting it fixed up, with Hoffman Body Shop of Akron redoing the outside of the vehicle for free. “I also do the flag education (at area schools), which I take a great deal of pride in doing because it’s really nice to know that there’s a lot of 9- and 10-year-olds who have been trained on flag etiquette and flag history,” she said. Veterans Day stems from Armistice Day By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer What we now know as Veterans Day originally stemmed
from Armistice Day. That’s according to the US Department of Veterans Affairs’ website. One year after World War I ended, “President (Woodrow) Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 (the anniversary of the war’s end) as the first commemoration of Armistice Day,” states the site.
Andrew Perkins
The day continued to be celebrated as “a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace,” said the site, with only the WWI veterans honored. However, after succeeding wars, Congress in 1954 agreed that Armistice Day should recognize all veterans, thus becoming the holiday it is today.

Fulton County Veterans Service Office offers help with VA benefits, more By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Any veterans in Fulton County are welcome to get help with Veterans Affairs benefits and more through the Fulton County Veterans Service Office. Ric Fouts serves as the county’s veterans service officer, with his office on the bottom floor of the Fulton County Courthouse open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. “The biggest thing I do, I think, is I help veterans receive VA benefits,” he said. “That is the major purpose of my job whether it be disabilities, compensation for dis-
abilities or pension, education, whatever the case may be. “After that, then it’s getting them enrolled in VA health care,” he added. The county veterans service office offers free transportation “to VA or VA-authorized facilities,” said Fouts. “If they just give me a call, we can get them set up,” he said. Drivers who take people to appointments include Rick Baber, Nathan Salvagni and Dana Smart. Fouts can also help veterans with education and debt management as well as obtaining hunting and fishing licenses. “If you’re service-connected,
you can get a 10-year hunting and fishing license for (the discounted rate of) $27.50,” he said. Another service he helps with is getting people signed up with the military relief fund. “That is for people who get in a problem financially,” he explained. “It’s up to $2,500 onetime payment for late utilities, rent, fixing the car, whatever the case may be that needs to be done to help them stay employed and stay in a home.” He also can assist wartime veterans and their spouses to get help with entering nursing homes or long-term facilities. Fouts works with Fulton Coun-
ty HOPE and local food resources like Matthew’s Market to assist veterans with housing or food.
He encourages people to call ahead at (574) 223-2217 before they stop in to his office.

Fulton Chamber of Commerce announces its Small Business season
THE GUARDIANS QUARTET —The Guardians Quartet will present a gospel concert at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, in Riverview Community Church, Tippecanoe. Photo provided by Riverview Community Church.
The Guardians Quartet gospel concert set for Nov. 12 A gospel concert with The Guardians Quartet will be presented at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at Riverview Community Church, 2780 SR 110, Tippecanoe. The Guardians have been singing southern gospel music collectively for over 200 years. They have had a Singing News Top 40 single and have recorded 17 CDs. They have sung at a variety of venues across the country, includ-
ing the National Quartet Convention. The Guardians have staked their claim in Southern Gospel Music as one of America’s favorite Southern Gospel quartets. Dean Hickman, John Darin Rowsey, Pat Barker and Scott Mullins, collectively known as the Guardians Quartet, have a unique sound, tight harmony and a passion for sharing the gospel through their music.
R E T S I G RE FOR
Their collective mission is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ and sing songs that minister to people’s hearts and touch their lives. Founded in 1988, The Guardians’ music impacts listeners with their sincerity and commitment to glorifying the Savior they sing about. There is no charge for admission. An opportunity for a generous love offering will be given.
Again this year, the Chamber is launching a program to support small business. Check out the Chamber’s Facebook group at facebook.com/groups/ShopSmallINFultonCounty. Throughout the holiday shopping season, the Chamber is encouraging consumers to “Think Small” and earmark at least part of their holiday spending in support of local small businesses. Fulton County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jillian Smith shares, “Small business is the backbone of the economy, 64 percent of new jobs in the U.S. come from small business. When people spend their dollars locally, more money stays local. On average, for every $100 spent locally, $68 of that stays here.” “By implementing Small Business Season, the Chamber hopes to encourage people to patronize all sorts of small businesses this holiday. In addition to wonderful retail options, there are dining establishments, personal service providers, even local ar-
tisans that need support. Small Business Season is a way to help residents develop a better appreciation for how their spending affects the area and quality of life.” In addition to increased marketing efforts, the Chamber is planning a Fulton County Shop Small Passport Program Nov. 25 to Dec. 10. Shoppers will be invited to patron participating businesses for their chance to win Chamber Dollars. The Chamber is encouraging all businesses to participate in its efforts to raise awareness of how supporting small business improves the quality of life for the entire community. “All businesses need one another. There’s a symbiotic relationship. But small business is the most endangered because many small businesses don’t operate with large cash reserves. When costs skyrocket, they feel it,” says Smith. The Fulton County Chamber of Commerce is challenging everyone in the area to support small business this holiday season.

and if you are outside the medical community, it can be daunting to figure out all the options for yourself and your loved ones. The good news is that I am here to help you find out what is a 3D Mammogram and what the benefits of selecting this as a care option. A 3D Mammogram is a digital picture. This was initially approved by the FDA in 2011. It is appropriate for all patients. As a breast imager, I love 3D mammography for two reasons. The most important reason is that we find breast cancer much
earlier. Multiple studies have shown an increase in the cancer detection rate of up to 40% when we use 3D vs 2D mammography. Another benefit of 3D mammography is our patients are less likely to be called back for additional imaging from a screening mammogram. The recall rate has decreased significantly. You might see statistics between 15% and 40% depending on the study you read. As a reminder, if you are over 40, today is a perfect time to schedule your mammogram.

Fulton County Chamber Celebrates New Kewanna StoryWalk By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Visitors to Union Township Park in Kewanna now have another outdoor activity to enjoy. The Fulton County Chamber of Commerce celebrated the new StoryWalk at the park with a ribbon-cutting on Thursday, Nov. 2. Portions of the story “Marisol McDonald Doesn’t Match” by Monica Brown in English and Spanish are placed at various stations around the park for people to enjoy reading as they walk on a path. It’s the second StoryWalk installed in Fulton County due to a project by former members of the Fulton County Leadership Academy. They included Mindy
Duckett, Andrea Stineback, Cora Alber, Hannah Bahney and Gina Hierlmeier. “StoryWalks are something I’ve been interested in ever since I saw the first one as a library director,” said Stineback, the director of the Fulton County Public Library. “I talked to (now retired FCLA head) Mark Kepler and Jessica Riffle (who’s now the FCLA head), and they thought it was a good idea.” “It turned out Mindy had actually worked on StoryWalks in another county, so it all kind of just fell together,” said Stineback. The first StoryWalk was put along Woodlawn Hospital’s trail in Rochester this summer. Others are to go in at Talma and Leiters Ford. Duckett said some of the feed-
back so far on the Woodlawn StoryWalk was that “it was the neatest project in Fulton County.” She also said people were glad the story was in English and Spanish. Duckett noted the stories at each site will be changed out every so often. The Fulton County Community Foundation paid for the StoryWalks via a grant to the FCPL. Duckett thanked Winamac Coil Spring for putting in holes and installing frames for the StoryWalk stations in Kewanna. Charles Rude, who serves as the director of the KewannaUnion Township Library, added the StoryWalk “will enhance the park for the local kids and (it) promotes literacy ... and physical activity.”

turnovers against Caston’s pressure defenses. Addison Zimpleman scored 22 points to lead Class 1A, No. 3 Caston (2-0). Isabel BY VAL Scales added TSOUTSOURIS 15, and DouSports Editor, glass added RTC 13. Raegan Hensley scored 16 of her game-high 17 points in the second half, and the North Judson defense forced two late Rochester missed shots in the final seven seconds to preserve a 4342 win on the road in the season opener for both teams at the RHS gym Thursday. Freshman Avaree Johnston scored eight points, and Kyleigh Lehiy rimmed in the game-winning 10-footer in the paint with 53 seconds left for the Lady Jays, who also hit nine 3-pointers. Freshman guard Aubrey Wilson hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points for Rochester before fouling out with 42.0 seconds left. Clevenger added nine, including five in the fourth quarter. All seven players in the program
scored a bucket, but Rochester also committed 19 turnovers and made just four of 11 free throws. “I’m not happy giving up 43 points,” Rochester coach Joel Burrus said. “I don’t give a rip if it’s the first game of the season or not. We don’t do that. … With the way we play and the way we’re supposed to close out to shooters, but the first game, it’s just so tough.” Rochester trailed by as many as seven in the fourth quarter but rallied to take a 42-41 lead when junior wing Ella McCarter knocked down a shot in the paint with 2:11 left. Other players in the program include junior post player Audrey Bolinger and freshman wing Brailyn Hunter. Football Seven Rochester football
players were named first-team all-Three Rivers Conference in voting done by the coaches and released to the media Saturday. Running backs Alex Deming and Brant Beck and linemen Brady Beck and Xavier Vance were offensive players recognized. Defensive lineman Peyton Young, linebacker Colton Ferverda and defensive back Dylan Hook were defensive players recognized. Carson Paulik and Wesley Meadows received honorable mention status. The Zebras went 7-3 overall and 7-1 in the TRC in 2023. The team finished in second place behind Peru in the conference standings. The season ended with a 28-22 loss to Lafayette Central Catholic in the Class 2A, Sectional 34 semifinals on Oct. 27.
Woodlawn Health hosting candy sale Wakarusa Dime Store candy sale will occur from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10 in the Hospital cafeteria. Wakarusa Dime Store will be on site with its candy. This event is open to the public, and all are welcome to come. “We are so excited to welcome the Wakarusa Dime Store back to our campus.
