The process was a little different in 2020 for the Fulton County FOP 143 Shop with a Cop program. This year, organizers of the annual goodwill event are hoping for a bit more normalcy, which has played an important holiday role in the lives of local children since its inception in 1996. Its humble beginning started 25 years ago when Dennis Price, then an officer with the Rochester Police Department, initiated the program to help make Christmas a little brighter for some less fortunate children in Fulton County. “We didn’t know what we were doing,” Price recalled. “We were playing it by ear. We went to schools and collected money. That year we helped around 80 kids.” Since that first year, much has changed. The program has become much more streamlined. It now serves more than 250 kids each year, providing them with new clothes and a special gift, all of which the child picks out with the help of a local law enforcement officer or 911 dispatcher. “There are a lot of families in need every year,” said Price. “It’s not just

parents out of work because of COVID. In some cases it’s because of family illness. I’ve had a case where a parent passed away a week before we did the shopping trip, as well as a week afterward. There are a lot of families who have fallen on hard times and whose kids need help at Christmas.” Price and his volunteer team, which includes his daughter Gail Karas, culls its list of children from local schools, the Department of Children’s Services and Area Five Agency. He noted the organizations are very familiar with the program and know the kids who could use assistance during the holidays. Once the list is cultivated, the children are invited to Walmart on a particular day — this year Saturday, Dec. 11. In past years, Walmart has provided portable breakfast foods and drinks for the children and their families. As the children arrive, they are paired with a police officer along with $100. Together, the child and adult use two-thirds of the money on clothing items — the needs and sizes are provided by the family — as well as one toy or personal item using the remainder of the funds. “The kids have an opportunity to interact with the officer and ask questions,” Price said. “It also pro-

the program. “A lot of people in the community know that they shouldn’t come to Walmart that day,” Price joked. “We don’t leave much left in the store!” Last year, because of COVID, the families were given a $100 gift card
