From the first day I started, I knew I was where I belonged.”

Beth Reid has been with Gentiva Hospice for 11 years. She’s a hospice care consultant.

Actually, she didn’t start out to work in the medical field.

“I majored in retail management at Purdue University. I worked for Woodlawn Hospital in the area of human resources.

When I started at Gentiva, we were Hope Hospice and I was

the human resource director. I eventually moved to the hospice care consultant role.”

A typical day for Reid might start at the doctor’s office or hospital. “I discuss needs with physician offices, hospitals and healthcare facilities. If a patient or family would like to learn more about hospice, I meet with them to provide education on our services. This allows them to make an informed decision on what is best for them.”

One of the things Reid wants families to know is that hospice cares. “It’s our team for their team. We are there to assist families in some of the hardest

times of their lives. I feel that we are fortunate to have the privilege of walking with them at this time. We become a guide for the loved one and their families.”

The hospice care team includes a nurse, aide, chaplain, bereavement coordinator, social worker and volunteers. “It’s our job to make the patient as comfortable and safe as possible.”

When asked how the team regenerates after such a heavy responsibility, Reid smiled. “We turn to each other. We have a really close team; we are like family. When the emotions of the job become hard, we turn to our chaplains and bereavement coordinator for support. We’ve also learned to focus on the patient and their family, not ourselves. They are the people most important to us at their time of need.”

Reid calls the clinicians who are there caring for the sick person every single day angels on earth. “Those are our team

members that we should be focusing on; they are amazing.”

She firmly believes hospice is a calling, not a job. “An employee of hospice must be compassionate and empathetic.

We must truly care about people and meet them where they are.”

Reid firmly believes that hospice workers are motivated by more than just a paycheck.

“Those who stay the course, love the work. We truly care about people.”

The hospice team takes pride in helping patients fulfill their last wishes. “We might have a patient who wants to travel to Colorado to visit family. Then we’ll coordinate the trip, getting in touch with a hospice in Colorado. Perhaps a man wants to go fishing. We work hard to make each person’s dream come true.”

She concluded, “We assure families that it doesn’t matter where they call home, we’re there to make sure they are

Reid and her husband Dave Fellers are the proud dog parents of a black lab Wesson. They enjoy lake time, being outdoors and traveling.

Let’s study the Bible What does the grace of God do for us?

(Read Titus 2:1-15) “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” (Titus 2:13)

In Titus 2:11 Paul expanded the meaning of “Savior” (Titus 2:10) by explaining what was involved in this salvation that we have through Christ. The emphasis is on grace — God’s lavish favor on undeserving sinners.

Paul pointed out three wonderful ministries of the grace of God (Titus 2:11-14). What happens when a person accepts Jesus Christ as their Savior and becomes a true Christian believer?

Many things happen, but here are three important things.

First, grace redeems us (verses 11, 14a). Paul explained

this salvation further (Titus 2:14). Christ “gave himself for us,” which means that he became our substitute. “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree” (1 Peter 2:24).

The word redeem means “to set free by paying a price.” We were all slaves of sin (Titus 3:3) and could not set ourselves free; but Christ gave himself as the ransom for our sins. By his death, he met the just demands of God’s holy law, so that God in his grace could forgive and free those who believe on Christ. We have been redeemed “from all iniquity,” which means that sin should no longer master our lives.

Second, Grace reforms us (verses 12, 14b). Salvation is not only a change in position (set free from the slavery of sin), but it is also a change in attitude, appetite, ambition, and action. The same grace that redeems us also reforms our lives and makes us godly. “Teaching” has the idea of “disciplining.” We are disciplined

by God’s grace, trained to be the kind of people that glorify him.

Grace reforms us because God purifies us and makes us his own special possession (Titus 2:14b).

This process of purification is called “sanctification,” and its goal is to make the believer more

like Jesus (Romans 8:29). Sanctification is not only separation from sin, but it is also devotion to God (2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1). “Peculiar” (verse 14) does not mean “odd” or “strange.” It means “a special people for God’s own possession” (see Deuteronomy 14:2; 26:18).

Third, Grace rewards us (verse 13). We have been redeemed “from all iniquity,” which means that sin should no longer master our lives. “Iniquity” means “lawlessness.” In our unsaved condition, we were rebels against God’s law; but now all of that has been changed. This led Paul to remind us of Christ’s Second Coming (Titus 2:13).

We are looking for Jesus Christ to return; this is our only hope and glory. This verse boldly affirms that Jesus Christ is God, for there is only one article in the Scripture: “the great God and our Saviour.” Paul did not go into detail about the events surrounding the return of Christ. Believers should always be expecting his return and live like those who will see him face-to-face (Titus 2:13).

Pink ribbons and orange pumpkins have become symbols of October. This month is Breast Cancer Awareness, and if you are a female over 40, this is your friendly reminder to schedule a mammogram. The good news is you can have a mammogram all year, not just in October.

So why get a yearly mammogram every year after 40? Beyond a recommendation by the medical community, we know when we find breast cancer in its earliest stages, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent. When we wait and find breast cancer in its advanced

stages, when it has traveled to other parts of the body, the fiveyear survival rate drops to 27 percent.

Getting a mammogram can be /<1'$ a scary ex628'(5/81' perience and sometimes is not comfortable.

Still, excellent professionals are working hard to make this experience positive.

Generally, we take at least two pictures of each breast to see all the tissue in two separate planes.

Sometimes, we avoid medical care because we do not want to get bad news; however, about 85-

90 percent of screening mammograms are normal. That’s great news.

Your doctor will receive a detailed report from the radiologist, and you will receive a letter from the imaging facility with your results.

The next step will be to continue monthly self-breast exams and return for your next annual mammogram in one year. About 10 to 15 percent of screening mammograms will have recommendations to return for a diagnostic mammogram (call-back), which could also include an ultrasound.

Most of these cases turn out to be normal. Less than 10 percent will result in cancer.

So, if you have not scheduled your mammogram this year, please do so.

James “Jim” Dill Gatewood, 66, Rochester, passed away at 5:32 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023, at Memorial Hospital, South Bend.

He was born Oct. 1, 1957, in Noblesville, the son of Bill and Louann (Dill) Gatewood. Jim graduated from Noblesville High School in 1976. On May 19, 1978, in Arcadia, he married Kathy Con-$0(6 ',// away and she survives. *$7(:22' Jim had worked for the United States Department of Agriculture as a food inspector for over 32 years, retiring in 2012.

In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking, cooking, fishing, sports, going to his grandchildren’s sporting events and dearly loved spending time with his family, especially being a proud granddad to two granddaughters. He had been a double leg amputee for over a decade, but never let his disabilities slow him down from the things he loved to do; always lifting others spirits by encouraging them to stay strong and work through adversities.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Gatewood, Rochester; children, Holly (Jason) Borges, Fulton, and James P. Gatewood, Rochester; grandchildren, Ally Borges, Brookston, and Brooklyn Borges, Fulton; brother, David Gatewood, Surprise, Ariz.; and sister-in-law, Nancy Gatewood, Noblesville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Kevin Lee Gatewood and Bill Gatewood; and stepfather, Sam Craig.

She was born June 28, 1932, in Fulton, the daughter of Charles E. and Gertrude (Wichmann) Beattie. She married Lee Roy Hoehne in 1951 and they had two children, David and Darla. On '$5/(1( / Feb. 22, 1975, at the Metea Baptist Church, she 0$57,1 married Frederic S. “Steve” Martin. He preceded her in death on June 30, 2018.

Darlene had worked as a bookkeeper. She had worked for Public Service Indiana from 1964-1970, Torx-Camcar Rochester from 19701982 and for Mike Anderson Automotive in Logansport from 19872000. After retiring, she had been a substitute school teacher at Caston and Rochester schools. She had been a member of Metea Baptist Church for over 70 years. She enjoyed cheering on the Caston Comets athletic teams and sharing her excellent gardening and flower skills to family and friends.

Survivors include her children, Darla Jean (Robert) Kaminski, Lombard, Ill., Mike Martin, Kokomo, Kathy (Kristi) Stockberger, Rochester, and Lori Rochelle Higgins, Logansport; grandchildren, Kristen (Andy) Dalton, Andrea (Luke) Stocking, Matt Coleman, Tawnie Ramer, Michelle Dotson, Jackie Robertson and Kerry Brouyette; great-grandchildren, Natalie Stocking, Elin Stocking, Marek Stocking, Cameron Robertson, Jenna Robertson, Garrett Brouyette, Gaby Brouyette, Kaden Brouyette, Maddie Dalton and Abby Dalton; greatgreat-grandchildren, Keegan Martin, Kase Brouyette and Granger Brouyette; and several nieces and nephews.

Jean Ann Davis

Trinity United Methodist Church Member Jean Ann Davis, 79, Rochester, passed away peacefully at 3:59 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

Jean Ann was born March 27, 1944, in Rochester, to John and Golda (Kirk) Smith and attended Grass Creek Schools. She was in the first class to graduate from Caston in 1961. She mar-($1 $11 ried the love of her life, Gene Davis, on July 26, '$9,6 1987, in Las Vegas, Nev. They shared 36 years of life’s adventures together.

Jean Ann had a strong work ethic and devoted 18 years to Switches and another 20 years to Modine, both in Logansport. She was known for her large and frequent garage sales and enjoyed helping people sell items on eBay. In her spare time, she loved working on puzzles. The Davis garage is full of the beautiful puzzles she and Gene completed together.

Jean Ann was a people person. She attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Rochester and loved spending time with her best friend Connie. She was a very proud mother and grandmother and was always taking pictures at family gatherings, so she could show them off.

Left to cherish Jean Ann’s memory are her husband, Gene; two daughters, Tonya Cates and husband Alan of Logansport and Carla Sewell and husband Steve of Francesville; son, Darrell Moss and wife Pixie of Cleveland, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Jeremy Cates and wife Amber, Jennifer Dawson and husband Brandon and Steven Sewell and fiancé Gabriella Acosta; three great-grandchildren, Christian Dawson, Carissa Dawson and Anna Cates; and one greatgreat-granddaughter, Amaya Osborn-Dawson. Blended family members include stepson, Bill Davis and wife Penny; stepdaughters, Brenda Chilton and Barb Wagner; and numerous grandchildren.

OBITUARIES Lanny Ray Tillman Avid Sports Fan

Lanny Ray Tillman, 65, Rochester, passed away peacefully surrounded by his children at 1:02 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, at Parkview Hospital of Fort Wayne.

On Jan. 21, 1958, Lanny was born in Portsmouth, Va., to Robert and Sue Halterman Tillman. Lanny attended Akron High School with /$11< 5$< the class of 1975. He married the love of his life, 7,//0$1 Nancy Roe, on May 14, 1976. Though this relationship was not permanent, they did have eight children together during their 25-year marriage and remained lifelong friends.

With a strong work ethic, Lanny had various jobs throughout his life. He was a semi-truck driver for many years, owned a trash route and worked for several different factories until he became disabled.

Lanny had quite a sense of humor. He loved to laugh and crack jokes. He enjoyed listening to music, playing cards and watching Netflix. Taking care of his flowers and shopping for yard decorations was also a hobby. As an avid sports fan, his heart and love were for the Minnesota Vikings. He was a diehard fan and enjoyed collecting their memorabilia. Grandpa cherished the time with his grandchildren and family.

Left to cherish the memories of Lanny are four daughters, Lori Tillman of South Bend, Mindy Tillman (Steven Kovatch) of South Bend, Marcy Tillman (Jess Sampson) of Rochester and Melissa Tillman (Dave Kale) of Rochester; three sons, Lanny Tillman Jr., Eric Tillman and Bobby Tillman, all of Rochester; life friend, Nancy Tillman Hart; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; father, Robert and Delores Tillman of Royal Center; two sisters, Janet Wright of Claypool and Cheryl Burkett of Rochester; two brothers, Larry Tillman and Craig Tillman, both of Fort Wayne; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lifetime Fulton County Resident Gary L. Beatty, 64, Rochester, passed away at 8:22 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2023, at Lutheran Hospital of Fort Wayne.

On Jan. 26, 1959, Gary Lynn was born in Rochester to Loren Lee and Flossie Louise Eash Beatty. Growing up, he shared his childhood with a brother, Steve. He was a lifetime Fulton *$5< / %($77< County resident.

Gary worked in maintenance and groundskeeping for Life Care Center of Rochester. As a material picker, Gary worked for Rochester Iron and Metal for a number of years. Many will remember Gary as their server at Tweedle Dee Dee’s. Over the years, Gary enjoyed landscaping and grooming his trees. He was proud to drive his ’77 black Corvette around the county, but gave it up for a Buick, his “old man car.” Grandpa cherished the time with his grandchildren and watching their events.

Left to share the memories of Gary are his son, Logan Beatty and wife Cassandra of Kewanna; seven grandchildren; and two nephews.

In your Sept. 27 issue, there was a most wonderful obituary. The person who died was Linda Sue Kline. I just wondered if you could let her family know how much it meant to me. I want them to know that I

Mary Barnett is an avid doll collector 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ -2( 6,&,/,$12 *XHVW :ULWHU Mary Barnett is a beloved citizen of Rochester. She attends the First Christian Church in town faithfully.

She was born in Logansport in 1935 and is looking forward to her 89th birthday coming up soon.

She was a nurse in Indianapolis for three years and was called to provide her nursing services in Winamac for over 10 years.

She is also an avid collector of vintage porcelain dolls and has over 70 in her collection.

“I started this collection way back,” Barnett said.

“As a child growing up, I had two sisters and a brother, and I never had a doll of my own. By the time I was playing with dolls, mother told me to play with Marilyn’s doll, my oldest sister, because she wasn’t playing with it anymore. Well it wasn’t my doll, even though I played with it. So, I needed a doll of my own, and the next thing I know, I had all of these dolls,” Barnett laughed.

She moved to Rochester when she was 18 years old.

“My aunt and uncle had an apartment here, they had a little girl, and needed someone to watch her while they were working. My aunt said, ‘Since you’re not going to school anymore, why don’t you come down and live with us,’” Bar-

nett said.

She accepted the offer and has lived in Rochester on and off for over 70 years.

“I’ve been here quite a while,” she said about living in Rochester.

“This is my town.” She has a lot of family members watching over her and one of her grandsons lives with her now.

“I’m lucky that I have two living sons, one lives three miles north and the other lives three miles south,” she said.

Barnett admitted that she wanted a little girl as she got older. When she married her second husband, she won the jackpot.

“I like telling people we were the Brady Bunch in reverse, because I had three sons and he had three daughters,” chuckled Barnett.

She has thoughts of selling pieces of her doll collection. But, she wants them to go to people who will really appreciate them. She wants them to “go to a good home.”

“It’s not gonna be too much longer that I’m gonna be 89 years old, and I don’t expect to live much longer,” Barnett said.

She also reflected on the loss of her siblings.

“I was supposed to die in 2014, because I have a sister that died in 2005 and three years later, my other sister died, and my brother died three years after that in 2011.

She thankfully broke the pattern and is still going strong.

“One of the guys that I know real well told me one time, ‘God doesn’t want you, you’re too ornery, and the devil doesn’t want you either, he’s afraid you’re gonna turn the air conditioning on,’” Barnett laughed.

She is also a jigsaw puzzle wizard.

Her grandson, Dave, keeps buying her puzzles because he knows she really loves them.

Barnett said to him, “Dave, would you stop that,” she laughed.

She has over 50 jigsaw puzzles waiting to be solved. Barnett is sharp and can piece the puzzles together with ease.

“One of the things I did that made me happy as far as puzzles go, I got a telephone call one day, and I was asked by a friend (Deb Tyler, retired and beloved fifth

grade teacher, neighbor and, according to Barnett, sister) to help finish a puzzle she’d been working on for “I don’t know how long,” and she wanted it done before Christmas.

“She wanted to get it done and put it on her wall, but she couldn’t find the pieces, so she brought it over here and before the evening

was over, I called her and said, Deb, come and get your puzzle, it’s done,” chuckled Barnett.

Barnett describes herself as ornery.

“I’ve never minded my own business, and I may have been ornery over the years,” she giggled.

Rochester is her town, and it is lucky to have her.

I have held several professional certifications over the years, currently holding my IAMC (Indiana Accredited Municipal Clerk) and qualify for the CMC (Certified Municipal Clerk), MMC (Master Municipal Clerk), CPFA (Certified Public Finance Administrator) and CPFIM (Certified Public Funds Investment Manager). There are no required certifications for the clerk-treasurer to have, but training and professional development are required by state law.

Ground-breaking ceremony held for Apache Drive extension %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 6WDII :ULWHU Work on extending Apache Drive in Rochester to help connect SR 14 and SR 25 in another area has begun.

Leaders from Fulton County and Rochester joined representatives from the North Central Indiana Regional Planning Council at a ground-breaking ceremony Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the project site’s start behind Beacon Credit Union, 430 Rouch Place Drive.

NCIRPC representatives also presented local leaders with a $1 million Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative, or READI, state grant for the project. The rest of work is being funded by approximately $1.7 million in budgeted funds from Rochester and approximately $500,000 in budgeted funds from the county.

HRP Construction of South Bend also started working on the extension Oct. 18. The project, which includes the road extension and supporting infrastructure, is estimated to be finished by “midsummer” of 2024, said Rochester

Redevelopment Commission President Brett Curnutt.

Curnutt earlier pointed out the project will help with connectivity to U.S. 31, if the highway becomes limited access in the future, as well as commercial and residential development.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for Rochester. Action breeds action,” he said after the ceremony.

“I think we’ll see a lot of projects in the future, and I’m just speculating on what I believe ... can happen and what can domino-effect from there. I think the Rochester community wins, and it’s a great opportunity to be a part of the chemistry in this project.”

Rochester Mayor Ted Denton said the extension “will make this end of town pop as far as development.”

“We’ve been talking for a lot of years about a hotel possibly being down here. That’s being kicked around and talked about by some of the investors and developers,” said Denton.

He mentioned Dr. Ken Hoff enabled the project by “donat(ing) ... property.”

Faith Outreach support program for single, pregnant women is ‘pro-love’ %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 6WDII :ULWHU A support program for single, pregnant women, offered by Faith Outreach Church in Rochester, is “pro-love” said its organizers.

“As a Bible-teaching church, we’re definitely a pro-life church (and) pro-life is how we vote, but pro-love is how we want to respond as far as this program is concerned,” said program Administrator Alyssa Campbell.

“So the program is basically a way for the church to respond to unmarried pregnant women and be able to provide the spiritual, emotional and physical support that they need.”

The program, Embrace Grace, starts Monday, Nov. 6, at the church, 1125 E. Ninth St. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. and go “an hour and a half to two hours,” each Monday for 10-12 weeks, said Campbell.

Though she noted “it’s a brand-new program” for Faith Outreach, Embrace Grace was started by Amy Ford and Sa-

lina Duffy in 2008 and is now in churches across the U.S. and internationally.

Campbell will be assisted by facilitators Cheri Penix and Ramona Gebert. Sessions will include reflection time, special speakers and crafts, among other things.

It’s free to the women participating, and attendees don’t have be from Fulton County or go to Faith Outreach Center. Women also can already have children, with the church able to offer child care, if needed, for the program by vetted workers.

At the last session, the program culminates in a group baby shower for participants, with women able to pick out items such as strollers to receive.

The program’s leaders mentioned having Embrace Grace at Faith Outreach Center was in response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization declaring the Constitution doesn’t provide for abortion rights.

“So many women faced with an unplanned pregnancy turned to abortion because of fear,” said Ge-

bert. “How is this going to affect my life? What am I going to do?

I’ve not ready to be a mom.”

“We want to take away that fear. You don’t have to be afraid.

We’re here for you,” she continued. “You’re not going to face this alone. Whatever obstacles you may be facing, we’ll help get you through those things.”

Gebert added the program is nonjudgmental, mentioning “just because we’re in church doesn’t mean we’ve led perfect lives either.”

“There’s no one here who is qualified to throw any stones, and I think that’s a very important part of reaching out to these ladies that we call them ‘brave girls,’” she said. “To know that the church is not about condemning you. The church is supposed to be about loving you.”

Gebert also noted they’re not forcing women to convert to Christianity through Embrace Grace.

“Our job as believers is to introduce people to Jesus, but we recognize fully that you cannot force people to have a relation-

Sophomore Grant Bailey qualified after running 18:11 at the sectional, but missed the regional due to a leg injury.

The only Rochester girl to compete was sophomore Allyson Calloway, who took 107th place in a field of 246 by running a personal best of 21:23. This time was 34 seconds faster than her sectional time from a week earlier.

Tippecanoe Valley’s Chesnee Miller advanced to state. She was 27th overall and 15th among individuals on non-advancing teams in 19:20.

Fort Wayne Concordia won the boys regional with 85 points. War-

saw had 101 points, Wabash had 142, Angola had 161, and Carroll (Fort Wayne) had 188 points, and also advanced to state.

Fort Wayne Concordia’s Vaughn Hendrickson won the individual title in 15:44.

Fort Wayne Concordia also took the girls regional with 46 points.

Homestead had 65 points, Carroll (Fort Wayne) had 180 points, East Noble had 202 points, and Warsaw had 224, and also punched tickets to state.

Delta’s Nicki Southerland was the individual champion in 17:31.

Football Rochester will play Lafayette Central Catholic in the Class 2A, Sectional 34 semifinals this Friday, Oct. 27. Rochester received a quarterfinal bye in the sectional and awaited the winner of the Winamac-Lafayette Central Catholic quarterfinal.

Lafayette Central Catholic went on to beat Winamac 42-14.

Lafayette Central Catholic, ranked No. 10, defeated Rochester 24-8 in last year’s sectional final.

Rochester (7-2) is ranked No. 12.
