Locally, Fulton County Public Library in Rochester has been actively addressing literacy issues at all age levels since The Literacy Coalition was formed in 1988. In 2015 Tim Roe assumed the role of literacy director, succeeding Gordon Bohs, who held the position for nearly 15 years; however, Bohs stayed on at FCPL to continue his work getting books into the hands of young children.

“What children do in the first five years is very important in learning to read,” said Bohs. He noticed this first as an elementary school principal. “I saw children coming into kindergarten, and there was a big difference between those kids who were exposed to books at an early age and those who were not.” As FCPL literacy director, Bohs approached the Fulton County Health Department, Head Start programs, WIC and others about distributing books to children they come into contact with, as well as mothers of newborns at Woodlawn Hospital. He continues to hand out 30-40 books per month.

“The essence of learning is the ability to problem solve and have an awareness of the tools available to us,” said Roe. The library is a veritable Swiss Army knife full of such tools. One of Roe’s most successful projects has been “Poet Tree,” an annual collection of work by local writers and artists of all ages he compiles during Poetry Month in April. “I do a lot of editing,” he added. This includes not only poetry, but also books written by local authors, often for the first time.

FCPL’s literacy programming came full circle with a planned presentation by Riley Child Development Center’s Stephan Viehweg on learning the signs of child development from birth to age 6. Unfortunately, Viehweg was forced to postpone the Aug. 18 program; however, it is expected to be rescheduled.Formore information on FCPL’s literacy programming, including specific times and locations, visit fulco.lib.in.us or facebook.com/ fcpublib or call (574) 223-2713. The Rochester branch of FCPL is located at 320 W. 7th St.

“They’re excited about getting those books,” said Bohs. “It’s a good way to try to fill thatWithgap.”Bohs continuing his work with early readers, Roe turned his attention to lifelong learners upon becoming director in 2015. This includes addressing the needs of library patrons that go beyond simply borrowing material. Among his many responsibilities are tutoring English language learners, proctoring examinations, training adults in skills needed for work and implementing new literacy programs.

FCPL’s literacy department also works with Indiana Humanities’ “One State One Story” program. For this year’s story, Aimee Nezhukumatathil’s “World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments,” the library is hosting a bird walk at the Judy Burton Trail Saturday, Oct. 29, followed by a watercolor project led by local artist Erica Coffing on Thursday, Nov. 3. Likely as a result of “Poet Tree,” Roe received a grant to work with Indiana Authors Awards honoree Kevin McKelvey, who will be at the Rochester library Saturday, Oct. 22, to lead a multi-genre writers workshop. “Writing is one of the main focuses of the library,” stated Roe. “It is how we organize our thoughts, discover our learning velocity.”

In 1987, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization designated Sept. 8 as International Literacy Day to raise awareness of the value of literacy and to encourage children and adults alike to develop their literacy skills.

The Fulton Economic Development Corporation is taking steps to reimagine its economic future. Key economic drivers in the county are manufacturing and agriculture. In March, FEDCO launched a five-month-long effort to examine what residents aspired for the county of 20,000 people.

“We’re looking at doing a housing study and strategy. What kind of housing do we need, and we’re looking countywide, not just focused in Rochester; we want to look at the county as a whole,” said Futrell.Fulton is a member of the North Central Indiana Regional Planning Council, which was awarded $30 million from the state’s Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative. Futrell said the county wants to use some of the funding to improve sidewalks and roads leading to a shopping center area and a former winery.

Two weeks ago, the parent company of Schnabeltier Winery donated the building and property to the Rochester-based Outlet Youth Center. “The gift of this property will allow us to greatly expand our services, provide outdoor activities and open up many new programing possibilities for the kids that attend our programs and events,” said Patience Hisey, director of The Outlet Youth Center. Futrell said the youth center is an example of a community amenity that new residents might look for.“Having those amenities to attract people, what can we do to keep growing, keep either retaining residents … or attracting new ones,” wondered Futrell. “We are working diligently to get all those plans ready so we can get that submitted to the state for READI dollars.”Futrell said with the priority list in place, the board of directors has drafted a strategic investment plan for ensuring operational goals all have accountabilities and measurable results. She said it will be finalized soon.

In an interview with Inside INdiana Business, FEDCO Interim Director Tiffany Futrell said the resignation last fall of her predecessor, Executive Director Terry Lee, prompted the organization to examine its mission. “We were at a point of opportunity to look at ourselves as an organization. Where do we go from here? How do we keep moving forward? And to also bring our city, county, all of our elected officials to the same table,” explained Futrell. FEDCO conducted two dozen listening sessions and meetings to gather input from residents and other community stakeholders. Futrell says participants shared their ideas of growth and where they wanted FEDCO to focus to keep residents there and attract more workers. But to do so also required new opportunities and amenities.“AsCOVID has shown us, you can almost work from anywhere. People no longer follow jobs. Jobs follow people,” Futrell said. “Our biggest thing is looking at how can we keep growing. How can we keep our current residents and future residents happy with quality of life.”As FEDCO continues to lay out its game plan, it has established five priorities, including hiring a chief executive officer to guide the organization in carrying out the newFEDCOvision. will be creating a diversified funding plan for organizational sustainability, and also plans to create an economic environment to simplify the process for businesses to locate and grow there. The organization plans to create a marketing plan to target its messaging.Economic development officials also understand the need for quality affordable housing.

Shepherd has a passion to coach

Shaun Shepherd has been an avid member of the Fulton County community, from coaching at Tippecanoe schools to raising his kids through the schoolShepherdsystem.is married with five kids ranging from 2 to 18 years old. His life is busy enough without adding in his job of 25 years as a new product introduction sourcing engineer II at Zimmer Biomet. Starting as a machinist, Shepherd worked his way up to the role he currently holds at Zimmer where he assists with the launch of new medical instrumentation that aids with implantation procedures. Although he didn’t go into Zimmer looking for much other than a job, he soon found it turned into much more as the years progressed. Over the years, Shepherd has been blessed with the chance to travel to many different countries, including Switzerland, Ireland and his favorite and most frequently traveled to country, China.Traveling to China so much, Shepherd has grown to love his colleagues there as his family. “They are friendly and cordial,” Shepherd quoted about his friends. With all the COVID restrictions, Shepherd has not been able to travel as much as he had before 2020. Although he misses all the experience and food, especially the dumplings, he acquired while traveling, with his kids in so many sports and activities Shepherd would hate to miss their accomplishments because he wasn’t home. For the past 14 years, Shepherd has loved being able to work with the youth in the community and helping them achieve their dreams in sports. For the past seven years he was the head coach for the boys seventh-grade basketball team at Tippecanoe Valley Middle School and has recently ac-

A recent letter to Fulton County Historical Society members from Museum Director Melinda Clinger and FCHS President Dan Tyler announced FCHS received a grant of $3,900 made possible by appropriated funds from the Indiana State Legislature in conjunction with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, Indiana Arts Commission and the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County. (StatePoint) Radon is present at high levels in a surprisingly large number of American homes, schools and other buildings. While this naturally-occurring gas is odorless, tasteless and colorless, it’s far from harmless. Experts are raising awareness about the serious health risks associated with radon exposure and what you can do about it. “Elevated radon in homes is more common than you may think. In fact, at least one in 15 American homes have elevated levels of radon, and this is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States,” says Albert Rizzo, M.D., chief medical officer for the American Lung Association. “The good news is that it is easy to test for radon. Do-it-yourself test kits are simple to use and inexpensive.” In an effort to eliminate this preventable lung cancer risk factor, protect all communities and buildings, and save lives, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), along with strategic partners like the American Lung Association, have launched a new five-year National Radon Action Plan. The campaign is sharing five important things to know about radon: 1. Radon exposure is lifethreatening. Radon-related lung cancers are responsible for an estimated 21,000 deaths annually in the United States.

Important things to know about radon exposure

2. Smoking and radon exposure can separately increase the risk of lung cancer. If you smoke, exposure to both tobacco and radon enhances the risk of lung cancer even further.

3. The only way to detect radon in your home is to test the air. The EPA urges anyone with radon levels above 4 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L) to take action to fix their homes. Both the EPA and the American Lung Association recommend that mitigation be considered if levels are greater than 2 pCi/L. After high levels are detected and confirmed, a radon mitigation system should be installed by a radon professional.

4. Radon testing should always be done when you buy a home and after building a new home. Many states now require radon results (if known) to be disclosed during a real estate transaction. Some states require testing in priority buildings like schools and daycares.Learnmore about radon testing and mitigation at Lung.org/Radon. While elevated radon is common, it is a problem that is easy to address. By finding, fixing and preventing high indoor radon levels, its health impacts are preventable.

Wheels on Fire Cancer Crusaders’ Out’ a success Wheels on Fire Cancer Crusaders held their annual Smash Out event Aug. 20 at the Akron Community Center, where hundreds of patrons were treated to wonderful food, exceptional entertainment, fabulous live auction items, delicious goodies and pies up for bid and a beautiful memorial lighting ceremony to remember those who have lost their fight to cancer and celebrate those who are still in the fight and who have won the battle against the dreaded disease. The evening kicked off with music provided by Mike Bowers. He entertained the crowd with selections of gospel music. Following Mike, Kylene Crabb wooed the crowd with her amazing voice. belting out country hits to the delight of the Debaudience.Collier’s School of Dance, a Smash Out favorite, took to the stage next and amazed everyone with their talented array of young dancers. New to the event this year was Erica Snyder, who performed a chalk talk of Elvis Presley to the wonderment of those in attendance. Ed Rock rounded out the night’s entertainment with his familiar and comforting voice before the live auction action began. The live auction consisted of 50 donated and handcrafted items. Audience members had the opportunity to bid on a custom fire ring, a Milwaukee carry-out pack, custommade memorial candle boxes and a beautiful handmade sofa table. Four gorgeous pieces of numbered artwork were also up for bid. The high bid item of the night was a donated helicopter ride from WIOE Radio.Once the live auction ended, it was time for the 59 pies to be auctioned off. The pies were made by various members of the church and the community and the bidding got quiteEstherintense.May’s peach cream pie was set to be the big seller of the night until the pie made in memory of Lori Miller was presented. Lori, who passed away in April, was the chairperson of Wheels on Fire, and was an integral part of the organization. The pie sold for $1,000 but it didn’t stop there. It was then cut into 10 pieces and each piece was then auctioned off. Those pieces each went for an additional $100. After a short break, the memorial candle lighting ceremony began. Ed Rock performed “Angels Among Us” and a short ceremony honoring Lori Miller and Ned Heighway, who was also a member of the Wheels on Fire team and who had just passed the week before, was held. As names were read, patrons approached the lit candle to light their loved one’s candle or their own candle. The Wheels on Fire Cancer Crusaders formed in 2004 as a Relay for Life team with just a few members participating in the overnight event. In 2016, the team made the decision to go out on their own as a mission of the Beaver Dam Church, so the money raised would benefit local cancer patients in Kosciusko and Fulton Counties. If you or someone you know suffers from cancer and needs assistance, please contact the Kosciusko or Fulton County Cancer Care Funds for assistance. The date for next year’s Smash Out is Aug. 19. The Wheels on Fire Cancer Crusaders would like to thank all who donated items or pies, helped with food, volunteered their time at the event and those who attended the event. Without the community, none of this would be possible.

The allocation of eligible funding for FY23 includes:

The General Assembly allocated $19 million the past two years for the Secured School Safety Grant. Legislators will set future allocations during this year’s budget session. With the addition of $3.9 million in funds unspent from previous grant cycles, Indiana was able to fully fund all top priority, eligible requests from all schools that applied. Additionally, the funding will cover all eligible requests for additional training for School Resource Officers and staff. With this funding, Indiana now has invested more than $132.9 million in school safety since 2013, when the SSSG program was initiated.

Acclaimed interior designer Mark Cutler has offered a few thoughts on what’s hot for fall decor and his tips for trying out the trends without breaking the bank. Bringing The Garden Inside Now that everyone took up gardening during the pandemic, the current trend I’m seeing is now bringing these gardens indoors for year-round growing and gardento-table cooking. It also fits with the trend we’re seeing of increased indoor plants and greenery and sustainability in the home. Now the influx of hydroponic “smart” indoor garden systems guided by apps and voice control that are attractive enough to look like a piece of furniture in the home makes these gardens not only a beautiful addition to the interior of your home, but a practical one, too. I particularly like the Rise Gardens system — and their smaller Personal Garden is great because it can fit on a countertop or shelf. Arrival Of The Deep Naturals We are finally seeing an end to the cool wood trend. Gone are the light pale grey floors, and many are opting for deeper and warmer tones. We are not seeing black as a trend, but warm, deep browns for sure, especially a return to walnut floors after years of rift sawn oak. Tip: When selecting wood for your home, go with a species that naturally has more color and grain to it. I like European walnut, but cherry is another great choice if you want cleaner grain and more of a red tone. The warm wood trend is extending beyond floors into furniture as well. Natural wood is hugely popular but expect to see more and more furniture in deep tones thisTip:fall.Vintage furniture is going to be a great resource when looking for wood pieces in a richer color. The ‘70s trend is now just starting to bloom, so there are still some great bargains to be had. I love Chairish and think it’s a terrific vintage resource. ‘70s Are Back All of these trends are tied to the larger one of a shift in taste from mid-century (‘50s and ‘60s) to an interest in the ‘70s and ‘80s aesthetic. That is giving us warmer tones like deep naturals such as ochre, teal and brown. Also a softer, more curvilinear silhouette is creeping back, too. Tip: If you are looking for inspiration and want to go back to the source, old design magazines which are easy to come by on eBay are an amazing way to see this style in action and I think are great inspiration for reinvention.

Take note of what you do have, what you already have duplicates of and what needs used earliest. This is not only the first step in organizing, but also a budget saving strategy by preventing purchasing duplicate items or more than you and your family can use before the expiration date arrives. Dry food storage basics remind you of the importance of keeping foods in cool and dark places. The ideal temperature for pantry storage is 50-70°F. Temperatures above this can cause canned goods, whole grains and flours, vegetables, olive oils and vinegars to suffer. Foods stored on shelves closer to the ceiling may reach upwards of 90°F. Your stove and dishwasher are additional sources of heat in the kitchen and you want to do your best to keep shelf-stable food items away from these appliances. In fact, flours, especially whole wheat flour, will have an extended shelf life if stored in the refrigerator or freezer. Staples, like flour, dry beans, pasta, and whole grains, come in containers of all shapes and sizes and are often used in small quantities at a time. After opening these foods, it may be helpful to store them in uniform, clear containers that are labeled and dated. By putting these food items in airtight, food grade containers, moisture and pests have a harder time getting to them. If you begin this practice, be sure to use the contents until empty before adding new. It’s also best practice to wash a container before refilling. This helps keep food safe and prevents what’s continuously left at the bottom from going bad. Don’t feel like you have to go out and purchase all new containers. Recycle and reuse various condiment containers and food jars after thoroughly cleaning and drying them. It’s important to write the food’s purchase date or when it was opened, expiration dates, and to tape cooking instructions to the outside of the container. Rice is a good example of a food that typically comes in a box or bag, not used all at once, and would fit into a recycled/airtight condiment container.Cleancardboard boxes can also be used to organize snack bags or irregularly shaped pantry items. By putting these items in boxes, you now create a pull-out drawer for a shelf or pantry.

Feed and Grain purchased the steer at the 2021 Kosciusko County 4-H Fair from Andrew Wise of Mentone. Said Wohead of the donation, “We just wanted to give back to the community and help a number of people less fortunate than us.”

“And everything you needed for the chickens was right in this area. You didn’t have to ship anything in,” said Keirn. She credited new government rules regarding egg production with helping shut down small egg farms in the area.

“I had a friend, Linda Cochran, who was very active in the (Lawrence D. Bell Aircraft Museum and Mentone Historical Museum in Mentone),” said Keirn. “She looked at me a year ago in March or April and said, ‘We need to do the story about all the little hatcheries and layer farms that made Mentone the “Egg Basket of the Midwest.”’” “Her next words were, ‘If we don’t do it, it won’t be done, because nobody will remember,’” added Keirn. Cochran passed away in August 2021, and Keirn, a former Mentone resident, is seeking to fulfill what her friend wanted. She’s compiling photos, articles and more related to Mentone’s past egg history for an exhibit to go up at the Mentone Historical Museum beginning during Rotors Over Mentone, set for Saturday, Sept. 10. People will be able to view the exhibit from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day in the museum located at 210 S. Oak St., Mentone. Keirn started seeking information for the project early this year. “I put a thing out on (Mentone News & Information’s Facebook page) wanting stories of the little farmers who had chickens or hatcheries. Some of them had both. I started getting answers back in, and I think I have close to 20 who have said they have things,” she said. One of the farms to be featured in the exhibit is that of Everett Besson. His farm was actually next to where Keirn lived in Mentone. It was Besson’s grandson that gave Keirn the information, with him having obtained mementos about the farm after his grandparents passed away. His other relatives were going through their possessions and “they were throwing all this stuff about the farm away,” said Keirn of what the grandson told her. For the Everett Besson farm, as for the other ones in the exhibit, there will be an individual binder displayed. The Everett Besson one includes photos of his family working on their farm and at the local egg show in Mentone. That egg show ran from 1935 to 1959 in town, save for three years during World War II when it didn’t go on, said Keirn. She has ribbons and trophies from the show people gave her to put in the exhibit. The Mentone egg show included the crowning of an egg king and queen. One of the former queens, Diana (Ballenger) Nellans, provided her crown to be placed in the museum.Another woman who knew Keirn was working on the exhibit obtained a late 1940s Farm Journal magazine article off eBay. It turned out to mention Nellans’ grandparents and traces the journey of an egg from their farm to a consumer. “It follows the egg from their farm on the truck and then where (the egg) was delivered in New York. … The street wasn’t wide enough for the truck to even go down. It went on horse and wagon, and it ends up in a lady’s skillet. But (the article) breaks down how much money these people got,” said Keirn.Keirn also detailed some egg history“Infacts.1947, there were 93,377,376 eggs sold in Kosciusko County,” she said. “Manwarings started into chickens in 1911; Creighton Brothers started in 1925. Manwarings merged with Strauss Elevator in 1969 and became Midwest Poultry.”

Kralis Brothers Foods took old hens who’d been at the farms and processed them, with the meat going to places like Campbell Soup Co., she said. Keirn noted Creighton Brothers is the only one of all that she’s researched to still have chickens. She herself worked for Creighton for more than 45 years. She spoke with Eddie Creighton, the son of one of the founders of the company, Hobart Creighton, about why Mentone was known so much for its egg production in the past. Eddie Creighton said his father noted that raising chickens was cheaper than swine or cattle, leading local farmers to become involved in egg production.

“What happened with all the little hatcheries and the layer farms was when new regulations came in from the health board and stuff, a lot of farmers didn’t meet those, so that’s when it went to the bigger chicken houses,” said Keirn, mentioning that was in the latter half of the 20th century. Keirn is still welcoming items for her exhibit. Though Keirn has set Sept. 10 as her date to get it up, she said she’ll still accept items after“Therethat. will never be a deadline, because families are going to keep finding information and it can always be added,” she said. If people have items they want to submit for the exhibit, they should contact Keirn at (574) 3715711.Those who want to see the exhibit, but can’t during Rotors Over

Mentone Feed and Grain LLC recently donated the meat from a 1,489-pound 4-H beef steer to Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry.

“The God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” Hebrews 13:20-21. Hebrews 13:20-21 informs us that today Jesus is the great shepherd who cares for the sheep. We are his sheep, and as we follow him he ministers to us. Jesus did not simply die for us; he rose again and lives for us. He is the great shepherd, the great high priest.

Each of the Old Testment names for God is seen in this psalm: Jehovah-Jireh, “The Lord will provide” (Genesis 22:13-14); Jehovah-Rapha, “The Lord will heal or restore” (Exodus 15:26); Jehovah-Shalom, “The Lord our peace” (Judges 6:24); JehovahTsidkenu, “The Lord our righteousness” (Jeremiah 23:6); Jehovah-Shammah, “The Lord is there” (Ezekiel 48:35); JehovahNissi, “The Lord our banner” (Exodus 17:8-15); and Jehovah-Raah, “The Lord my shepherd” (Psalm 23:1).In other words, the Lord Jesus Christ is to his sheep all that they ever need. As the little child said when misquoting this psalm, “The Lord is my shepherd — what more shall I want?” Submit to “the great shepherd of the sheep” (Hebrews 13:20), our Lord Jesus. He lays down his life for his sheep (see John 10:11), and through his wounds we are healed (see 1 Peter 2:24). If you have gone astray, return to him (1 Peter 2:25), because he knows his sheep and they know him (see John 10:14). He will welcome you. Let’s study the Bible

“I shall not want” is the theme of Psalm 23. “I shall not want” for rest and refreshment (v. 2), “I shall not want” for restoration and righteousness (v. 3), “I shall not want” for protection in trouble (v. 4), “I shall not want” for provision in the wilderness (v. 5), and “I shall not want” for a home to go to at the end of the day (v. Of6). course, the picture here is that of the Oriental shepherd and his flock. Such a shepherd knows each sheep by name. The shepherd goes before the sheep and makes sure they are not walking into danger (John 10:27-28). The sheep never need worry when they follow the shepherd, for he will protect them and provide for them. Even when they go through a dangerous valley (verse 4), the shepherd is beside them, and beyond the valley is the house of rest. At the end of the day, the shepherd leads the flock back to the fold and stands by the open door to examine each one as it enters. If he sees one that is bruised or weary, he puts the refreshing oil upon it to soothe and heal it, and gives it a drink of cool water. How gracious our shepherd is to care for us.

Saying Scouting prepares young people for the world they have in front of them, Mike continued, “We need more Scouts, with the values and work ethic that Scouting instills.” The event raised more than $22,000 to support the programming of the Sagamore Council, which serves 15 counties in central Indiana.BothKarickhoffs have made extensive contributions to Ivy Tech and the Kokomo community.
