Tippecanoe River

Did you know the Tippecanoe River is considered the eighth most important river to conserve in the United States due to its ecological diversity and the number of endangered species it contains?

Or that the word “Tippecanoe” is derived from a Native American term meaning “buffalo fish?”

These are just a couple of the facts learned by local high school students who took part in Arrow Head Country Resource Conservation and Development’s annual river raft expedition, now in its 30th year of operation.

The expedition, which took place Sept. 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12, was conducted in collaboration with soil

and water conservation districts from Fulton, Cass, Pulaski, Kosciusko, Jasper, Miami, Starke, White and Newton counties. New Fulton County SWCD Director Megan Malott and SWCD board member and local farmer Mike Norman were both on hand throughout the expedition.

“The students are separated into groups to learn and are tested on what watersheds are and where their boundaries lie, how water flows, how and where everything placed within the watershed affects what goes into the water and what causes water pollution,” Malott explained.

The students were also educated on the importance of filter strips and wetlands, and foresters were on hand to explain the importance of trees, the different species and why the distinction between native and invasive species is important for ecological health.

“The last section of this event is the raft trip down the Tippecanoe

River. The students learn and are tested on the history of the river, the diversity and importance of living organisms within the river and the water temperature. The students take a water sample and test the water quality for oxygen and phosphates,” said Malott.

According to Norman, these tests come back “clean as a whistle.” The river’s fishery is very much the same as it was in the early 1900s, and it continues to support several endangered species, including 57 species of mussels, which are particularly susceptible to pollutants.

Norman, who has served 30 years on the board and earned the “River Friendly Farmer of Indiana” award, has volunteered all five days of the expedition for 13 years, taking on a number of roles, including those of chaperone, “helmsman” of the river raft and guide, imparting historical and ecological facts about the river along the way. “My job is to get them there and back safely,” Continued on page 3

Local cook seeks to provide community with food for the soul

“I believe we can serve Jesus with the skills we possess,” stated Alisha Gonzales, Rochester. “I’ve been in food service for years. I cook tasty food. God put it on my heart to start the Truth Soup Kitchen. It’s not just a place for people to come and eat; because of the opportunity to fellowship together, I believe we will offer them food for the soul.” Gonzales is in the process of finding a place for this soup kitchen.

Gonzales herself knows what it’s like to struggle financially, “I was a single parent, raising two little girls. I made too much money to get government aid. I remember those days when an emergency developed, and I wondered how I was going to make ends meet. My heart goes out to people who are struggling. I feel like I can help them by providing a good, hot meal for dinner weekdays from 4-6 p.m.”

She also has a heart for old people who are struggling, “My grandmother had prescription medicine that cost her $900 a month. Being on a fixed income, she couldn’t afford to get both her medicine and her food. I don’t want senior citizens to be hungry. I will feed them.”

“Children can focus better when they’ve had a hot dinner meal,” says Gonzales. “They do better in school. They feel better.”

She continued, “God provides for me daily. So, I feel like I’m paying it forward by offering meals to the community.”

Gonzales’ husband Ramon will help her serve the meals. She added, “I’ll also be enlisting the help of church members in the community. We will reach out to the area schools in hopes that National Honor Society students will lend a hand. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts may also lend us eager volunteers. We also plan to reach out to the Optimist Club.”

Feeding the hungry was important in the ministry of Jesus.

“My Lord fed 5,000 people with five loaves of bread and two fish. He was always feeding hungry people as he was preaching to them. I believe that when we feed hungry people, we are actually serving God in a special way. And we are spreading the word that he cares.”

Although Gonzales had been attending church for quite some time, she was not seriously committed until this past October. “I remember going to church and afterwards turning into the liquor store. Ramon and I had been living together for five years before I got serious about following Jesus.”

Gonzales dedicated her whole heart to Jesus. “I realized that following the Lord is a day-today journey, a heart-to-heart connection. Ramon and I

decided we couldn’t live in sin anymore but needed to get married.” The couple was married this past May.

Her hobbies include crocheting, studying history, listening to Gospel music and interacting with friends. She and Ramon have a Schnauzer named Lucy and a calico cat named Ethel that are the best of friends.

Gonzales said, “Ramon’s dream is to one day purchase a heated serving truck so we can deliver meals to senior citizens who are homebound.”

“As soon as we have a place to serve the meals, our ministry can begin.”

Anyone who can assist Gonzales in finding a place to start her soup kitchen can contact her at truthsoupkitchen@gmail. com.

Local Tri Kappa chapter raises money

The local Tri Kappa chapter began their annual nut and candy sales on Sept. 13 to raise money for the community and will continue taking orders un-

til Monday, Oct. 11.

Tri Kappa is selling various sweet and savory items to help benefit the community.

Terri Lynn products include many varieties of premium nuts, snack and party mixes and candy, all of which are known for exceptional quality.

Perennial favorites include giant cashews, pecan halves, walnut halves, deluxe nut mix and harvest mix. Prices start under $10 and most regularly packaged products in 1-pound airtight bags are under $15.

Many people buy from the nut and candy sales for their holiday baking, to give as a gift during the holidays or just as something to snack on as fall sports are wrapping up. Tri Kappa has 10 types of plain or honey roasted nuts, five types of chocolate-covered nuts, eight nut mixes, gummy bears, chocolate malted milk balls, two types of chocolate-covered fruit, milk chocolate pecan clusters, dark chocolate sea salt caramels and a few different gift tins.

Tri Kappa has been doing these sales for at least 25 years,

but likely much longer than that. By supporting the annual nut and candy sale, you will be contributing to the many causes Tri Kappa has chosen to disperse proceeds amongst.

Every year, the chapter is able to give two scholarships to Rochester High School students as well as donate to the United Ministries, Quilts of Valor, Girls on the Run, Kids Bridge food program, FCA and others through the proceeds of candy and nut sales.

They have also been able to contribute to other local causes, such as a new building project at the Fulton County 4-H Fairgrounds, Compassionate Healthcare, Distinguished Young Women, Riddle Elementary One School, One Book project, Junior Achievement and Miracle Tree.

On a state level, Tri Kappa supports the Riley Children’s Hospital Cheer Guild.

Bayer Fund and Fulton County Farmers team up to direct donations to nonprofits and schools

Local farmer Steve Haselby, Haselby Farms, recently directed a $5,000 Bayer Fund America’s Farmers Grow Communities donation to Fulton County 4-H.

Fulton County 4-H will use the funds for a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program through Fulton County 4-H.

“This generous gift, courtesy of Haselby Farms, will be used to start innovative programming we will make available through Fulton County 4-H to enhance education in our community,” said Mark Kepler, extension educator, Fulton County.

In 2022, Bayer Fund revamped America’s Farmers Grow Communities program, making it easier for farmers across the country to find and fund the organizations and institutions that keep their communities thriving. This included doubling the individual donations to $5,000, up from $2,500 in previous years to provide a greater impact to local rural communities.

For more than a decade, Grow Communities has partnered with farmers to direct funds to pro-

grams and organizations that contribute to their communities’ health and vibrancy, such as food banks, schools and youth agriculture programs. Since the America’s Farmers programs began in 2010, the initiatives have awarded near-

ly $65 million to such programs.

“Each year we hear from several nonprofit and school leaders, as well as farmers, about the ways Grow Communities has made a difference,” said Al Mitchell, Bayer Fund president. “Bayer Fund is proud to work side by side with farmers to identify local nonprofit organizations and schools that are improving rural communities in the areas of health and wellness, food and nutrition and STEM and ag education.”

Farmers can enroll for the opportunity to direct a 2023 Grow Communities donation. To learn more about the enrollment process and how America’s Farmers programs are making an impact, visit americasfarmers.com.

Don’t be afraid (Read: John 6:10-21)

“Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and draw-

Let’s study the Bible

ing near the boat; and they were afraid. But He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.” (John 6:18-21)

When Jesus fed the 5,000 men and their families (John 6:10-13), with the women and children included (see Matthew 14:21), there could have been over 15,000 people present.

When everyone was full, Jesus had the disciples collect the leftovers, which filled 12 baskets. That’s one “doggy bag” per disciple, each a reminder of the Lord’s supernatural provision for each disciple.

When the people saw the miracle that Jesus did, they exclaimed, “This truly is the Prophet who is to come into the world” (John 6:14; see Deuteronomy 18:15-18). They recognized that Jesus’s miracles pointed to his identity. So far, so good. But when Jesus realized they wanted to take him by force to make

him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself (John 6:15). As we will see in John 6:26-27, they only wanted the physical benefits he offered. They wanted the blessings without the blesser.

While Jesus was still on the mountain, the disciples got into their boat and started across the sea because Jesus had not yet arrived (John 6:16-17). A high wind started to blow, and the waves began to churn (John 6:18). As if that were not bad enough, they saw Jesus walking on the water, and the sight terrified them (John 6:19). They feared that he was a ghost (see Matt. 14:26).

Jesus calmed their fears and assured them that he was no ghost (John 6:20). So they were willing to take him on board. Then, immediately the boat was at the shore where they were heading (John 6:21). So, one moment they were in the middle of a stormy sea; the next moment

they had miraculously reached their destination.

Don’t miss that once they were willing to receive Jesus into the boat, he dealt with their problem and delivered them where they needed to go. When believers recognize and respond to the presence of Jesus in the midst of their struggles, they invite the supernatural into their negative circumstances. And Jesus takes care of the problem.

Like the disciples, we have no idea what is coming in our storms, but we find comfort as we learn to know the Lord as the one who is always faithful and true. We learn that in all of our struggles we can experience the power of the Lord’s calming presence. Because he is there powerfully working in our lives. We do not need to afraid.

Whitley Yates Guest Speaker At Fulton County Lincoln Day Event

Whitley Yates will be the special guest speaker at the Fulton County Republican Party’s annual Lincoln Day Event, Friday, Oct. 14. The event will be held at the Fulton County Historical Society.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14. The deadline to purchase tickets is Oct. 9.

Yates, the director of diversity and engagement at the Indiana Republican Party, has been named a 2022 Trailblazer by the Republican National Committee.

The Trailblazer Award, presented annually by the RNC, celebrates the achievements of Black Republican leaders and recognizes their leadership and commitment to paving the way for Black Republicans.

Yates is an award-winning publicist, entrepreneur and political power player. She is the first person to hold the position of director of diversity and engagement at the Indiana Republican Party.
