Blacktop Cruisers to celebrate 25th car show in Rochester

%\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Next month, the Blacktop Cruisers Car Club will celebrate the 25th Red Hot Car Show & Swap Meet in downtown Rochester. The event Oct. 9, is to be held in conjunction with the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce’s 29th annual Chili Cook-off. Last year’s car show was cancelled because of COVID concerns in what would have been the 25th annual event. Organizers are ready to come back with the best show ever in 2021, according to Chris Peterson, the club’s president. The Blacktop Cruisers Car Club held its first meeting in January 1998 with 26 members in attendance. Founding member Sid DeVries and his wife began discussions of a club after participating in the first Red Hot Car Shows, which were run by the Chamber of Commerce, as well as other shows for many years. A number of guidelines were set forth at that first meeting. They always have included all models of cars and trucks in the membership of the club. According to Peterson, the club never wanted to limit its numbers by having an exclusive membership. He emphasized the club remains all-inclusive for all automotive enthusiasts. In fact, they have had people who did not have a car to show become members of the club only

because of their interest in the hobby. At the April 1998 meeting, a vote was taken to officially call the club the Blacktop Cruisers. The name was suggested by Rod Howell, and a logo was drawn by Kathie Adams. By May 1998 the club had 33 paid family memberships. The first outing as a club was to travel to the Lakeview Diner in Warsaw for a cruise-in May 15, 1998. Through the years, they have taken several road trips, including to the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum, a chartered bus trip to the Gilmore Museum in Michigan, the Corvette Museum in Fort Wayne, a Sunday cruise to Roscoe’s Restaurant and Door Prairie Museum, the Studebaker Museum, a farm and car museum in New Haven and a weekend cruise to Somerset, Ky. Club members also have toured several factories, such as Craig Welding, Dean Foods, Camcar Textron and Logansport Municipal Utilities. The high-mark of its membership was 102 families, while the current membership includes 51. In 2004, the club took over the Round Barn Festival’s Cruise-In from the chamber of commerce, and in 2008 it began managing the Red Hot Car Show, which they continue to organize annually, including this year, in conjunction with the Chili Cook-off. Over the years, the club has lost a number of its founding members who have been

remembered with memorial awards at the car shows, including Greg Miller, Don Snipes, Earl Gaerte and Richard Peterson, Chris’s father. Each had their brand preference: Mopar for Miller, Studebaker for Snipes, Chevrolet for Gaerte and Ford for Peterson. Each year they give an award in each man’s name with something they would have liked. In 2014, a scholarship was established through the Fulton County Community Foundation in the name of the Blacktop Cruisers and Gaerte. The $1,000 award is presented to an area high school student who is entering the automotive field, preferably in performance automotive, but can include anything in the automotive realm. “The show is weather dependent,” added Peterson. “It will draw vehicles from all surrounding states. We’re usually in the 400 range (for entries) but have been up to 600. It is one of the largest one-day car shows in Indiana. We are a 501(c)(3) organization and all proceeds go to charities.” The Blacktop Cruisers meet the fourth Wednesday of the month, typically at Jarrety’s Place in Rochester. Anyone is invited to stop by and check out a meeting. For further information about the Blacktop Cruisers Car Club, visit www.fultoncountyblacktopcruisers.com. New members are always welcome and an application form is available to download on the website.
