Boy Scout troop celebrates 100 years in Fulton County %\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Throughout the years, many young men, and now young women as well, have been part of the Boy Scouts in Fulton County. In 2021, Boy Scout Troop 219, often referred to as the Rochester Boy Scouts, celebrated its 100th anniversary.

However, according to Scoutmaster Adam Harrington, the troop has become more regional — including scouts from Macy, Denver and Akron — to the point it should more broadly be called the Fulton County troop.

The troop’s centennial anniversary actually occurred March 21, but they only held a celebration recently due to COVID concerns.

During the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 22, troop members past and present gathered at the Fulton County Historical Society. Former Scouts from as far away as Texas, Illinois and Ohio returned to Fulton County to join in the celebration alongside the 16 current members, who range in age from 11 to 18 years.

Currently in his third year as scoutmaster, Harrington is well aware of the troop’s storied past.

He specifically pointed to the leadership of George Riddle, one of the first Scoutmasters in Rochester, as well as the roles played

by Dewey, John and George Jones.

Harrington noted past iterations of the troop were a bit more adventurous in their activities than the current group. Records show some even did mountain climbing as a group activity.

“The boys were a bit more aggressive back then,” Harrington noted. “How times have changed!”

That certainly isn’t to suggest the current group is stagnant.

They also volunteer their time with the annual Trail of Courage. The local troop currently includes two Eagle Scouts, Jacob Kiefer and Anthony Peterson.

Earlier this year, the local group organized the “Spring Camporee,” in which they hosted 200 scouts from around the region at Tippecanoe State Park.

They plan to host the group again next year, this time at Camp Buffalo outside Monticello.

The Scouts also have shared some of their activities with the Rochester girls troop, formed a year ago and includes six young ladies who are eager to learn and Continued on page 2

Akron hairdresser enjoys helping people feel good %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 )HDWXUH :ULWHU “I’ve always been passionate about hair. We went to a beauty shop when I was in junior high, and I just loved it. I loved everything about it — the smells, the sound of the girls chattering — I knew at that moment, what I was meant to do,” stated local hair aficionado Stephanie Ellenwood.

Time progressed and Ellenwood graduated from high school. “I was working at a gas station broasting chicken when my high school friend popped in and said, ‘Hey I’m going to a beauty school in Shelbyville, you ought to come.’ So, I did!” she recalled with a laugh.

Fresh out of cosmetology school, Ellenwood, only 19 years old at the time, settled in at a shop in Warsaw. “The

owner, Dave Becknell, was a barber and I learned a lot of my techniques from him,” she said.

Ellenwood met her husband Jeff and they started a family. When their first child was born, she decided to dedicate most of her time to staying home and being a mom. But her love of hair never left and she worked off and on whenever she could.

Life marched on and the Ellenwoods, who thought their family was complete, began caring for their great-nephew, Blake. After some time had passed, it became evident he needed to become a permanent part of their family. Five years later, they were finally able to make his adoption official.

With her family settled, Ellenwood was ready to put down some roots and find

a hair home again. So, one Saturday afternoon in midMay she strolled into Terry Runkle’s barber shop in Akron.

When she finished telling Runkle her hair story, he said, “I’ve got to show you this.” In a frame on his office wall, was a newspaper clipping of Dave Becknell.

It just so happened, the guy who trained Ellenwood was Runkle’s best friend and barber mentor. An hour later she left with a key to the shop.

Ellenwood is happy with her new hair home. “I feel like the puzzle pieces are finally coming together for me. I’m at an age where I want to hang my hat and have a hair home and feel good about it, and I’ve found that at Runkle’s,” she said.

“It’s been fun,” she said of her latest endeavor. “It gives people choices too. If someone wants the barber experience, they’ll go to Terry.” And, if they’re looking for something more in depth, like a color or a perm, then Ellenwood is at their service.

“I’ve always practiced quality over quantity when it comes to hair and I love talking to people. I told Runkle, we’ve got the greatest job in the world really. A person can come in here feeling the worst. But once you give them some love and spin them

around, they walk out of here feeling totally transformed. I mean how cool is that! I love that part of my job,” she said.

In her spare time, she enjoys being a mom to her five kids, making wreaths, cooking, spending time outdoors working in the yard and gardening. And when time allows, socializing with her friends is a must.

Harrington noted some of the activities they do include hiking, canoeing, camping and attending a South Bend Cubs game each year. The group holds its weekly meeting from 7-8:30 p.m. each Wednesday at the Fulton County Historical Society.

“The biggest thing I want to instill in the boys is a sense of self-sufficiency,” Harrington said.

“The boys must help fund themselves to go to do things, such as camp and other activities. We encourage the parents to help their Scouts set a goal and save money toward that goal.”

He added several of the boys are saving money to go to Alabama next summer. Those who are able to attend will have the opportunity to spend the night on the USS Alabama and tour the Gulf Coast. Harrington has an entire week of activities planned for the drive there and back.

Those Scouts who are not able to attend, including the younger members, will go to Camp Buffalo for the week-long summer camp.

“Without the community, this troop wouldn’t be around,” Harrington concluded. “It takes everyone to make it work!”

TVSC awarded secured school safety grant Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation has again been awarded a grant from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, the Fiscal Year 2022 Secured School Safety Grant Program in the amount of $100,000.

The SSSG is a competitive and matching grant. Of the 392 awardees, TVSC was one of only 52 awarded the maximum grant award this grant cycle. This is the fourth consecutive year TVSC has been a maximum

grant awarded school district.

TVSC places high priority on school safety. All TVSC administrators have earned with new administrators earning the school safety specialist or advanced school safety specialist status as designated through the Indiana Department of Education’s School Safety Academy.

In May 2021, TVSC conducted a district-wide threat assessment through Safe Havens

International through the Fiscal Year 2021 Secured School Safety grant. Through recommendations of the assessment and priority lists compiled by the TVSC safety team, the projects for 2022 will commence immediately. The grant period is Sept. 1, 2021, through Aug. 31, 2022.

OBITUARIES Pat A. Calvert Past Worthy Matron

Pat A. Calvert, 77, Rochester, passed away at 7:01 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021, at Woodlawn Hospital.

On Dec. 25, 1943, Patricia Ann Ullery was born in LaPorte to Lester and Edna Wallace Ullery. Growing up, she shared her childhood with a sister, Carol, and two brothers, Vernon and Robert. 3$7 $ &$/9(57 As a young lady, Pat moved with her family from Marshall County to Rochester in 1951. Proudly, she graduated with the class of 1962 from Rochester High School.

In the Talma United Methodist Church, Pat married the love of her life, Roy Dale Calvert, July 4, 1963. They shared 51 years of life’s adventures. Sadly, Roy passed away Oct. 9, 2014. Their union produced three wonderful children, Jennifer, Jeffery and Gary. Two more generations have been added to the family tree with the blessings of 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

With an appetite for adventure, Pat and Roy toured all over exploring most of the 48 United States. They enjoyed cruising the Caribbean and taking a train trip thru Canada. The Calverts floated the Tippecanoe and went four-wheeling around the property.

Pat was a former member of the Talma United Methodist Church and currently attended the Burton-Richland Center United Methodist Church. As a lifelong conservative, Pat was currently president of the Fulton County Republican Women. She was also a precinct committeeman for Newcastle Township, campaigned with those seeking office and served as a consultant and strategist. For the last several years, she worked as a poll worker at the courthouse during pre-election day voting. Pat was also a devoted member of the Royal Center Eastern Star 524, holding many leadership roles including past worthy matron.

Many will remember Pat at Farmers and Merchants Bank, where she worked for 25 years. More recently, Pat worked as a secretary for Rick Brown, prosecuting attorney, for 12 years. Since retirement, she had enjoyed visiting, traveling and going for coffee with the girls. To relax, Pat enjoyed listening to the music of The Elderly Brothers.

As the matriarch of the Calvert family, Grandma Pat was proud to oversee four generations. She cherished the time spent with her family, making noodles with the grandchildren were the best of times. She annually planted a bountiful vegetable garden, sharing the harvest with her family. Pat was proud of the colorful flower gardens that highlighted the landscape. Sometimes she would plant new peach trees to increase the crop output.

Many good times making memories with family and friends were had at the pavilion built by Roy, embracing the east edge of the Tippecanoe River. Pat loved hosting birthday parties, family reunions and special family celebrations here and, as an extraordinary cook, delivered the best buffets, many times serving her specialty chicken and noodles.

Fredrick R. Van Duyne Farmer

Fredrick Richard Van Duyne, 93, Rochester, passed away at 10:55 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021, at Wampler Senior Retirement of Bourbon.

On Feb. 10, 1928, Fredrick was born in Fulton County to Fred K. and Mildred Fultz Van Duyne. As one of four children, he shared his childhood with two sisters, Evelyn and Marilyn; his brother Dean passed )5('5,&. 5 at the age of 3. With great pride, he graduated with 9$1 '8<1( the class of 1945 from Rochester High School.

Fredrick and Dorcas June Riddle were married Sept. 11, 1949, in the Brethren Church of Tiosa. They shared nearly 65 years of life’s adventures.

Sadly, she passed away Feb. 27, 2014. They were blessed with a family of seven children and enjoyed the family life on the farm. The blessings continued with the addition of grandchildren and great-grandchildren to the family tree.

Fredrick was a farmer all of his life. He also worked in construction for 16 years and finished working as the maintenance director for the Argos Community School system after 15 1/2 years. Committed to serving his community, he was a mail carrier, Walnut Township trustee and Argos Community School board member. His service continued with his faith, he was a Sunday school teacher, a deacon, a Gideon and on the Brethren Retreat Board at Shipshewana. He would say, “Church is important in my life. I’m a representative to the kingdom and I do what I think God has for us for our lives.”

Fredrick is lovingly remembered by a daughter, Linda Gates and husband Troy of Huntington; six sons, Richard Van Duyne and wife Barbara of Rochester, Kenneth Van Duyne and wife Sherry of Ashland, Ohio, Dennis Van Duyne and wife Ann of Warsaw, Michael Van Duyne and wife Cathy of Plymouth, Tim Van Duyne and wife Tracy of Argos and Kevin Van Duyne and wife Jill of Wabash; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; sister, Marilyn Masterson and husband Randy of Rochester; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Patsy Pauline Holcomb (Leap), 76, passed away peacefully at home after an extended illness Monday, Aug. 30, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.

She had been a resident of Anderson for more than 30 years. Patsy was born at home outside Leiters Ford April 18, 1945, to Manson and 3$76< 3 Gladys Leap (Shidaker), and was the oldest of +2/&20% their three children. Patsy was active in school as drum major, cheerleader and prom queen before graduating as salutatorian from Aubbeenaubee Township Schools in 1963.

She moved on to achieve her bachelors in elementary education at Indiana University Bloomington. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, where she worked the dining halls to help put herself through school. One of her favorite memories of her time there was participating in the Little 500.

She spent many years as a teacher, one of her great passions, then moved into insurance, and finally worked for the state in the Department of Family and Children until her retirement. Through it all, she remained a teacher of life.

Though she grew up knowing her future husband, they did not truly find one another until he returned from the war in Vietnam.

They were married on June 22, 1968, and spent their years moving around the country, raising their two children until they finally settled back home in Indiana in 1988.

Among their many travels, they spent much time researching genealogy and visiting lighthouses, two of her passions. Another was music and they spent many years in retirement bringing light and joy to others through song until dementia fully took hold.

Patsy is preceded in death by her parents, Manson and Gladys Leap (Shidaker); and her granddaughter, Savannah Grace Thompson. She is survived by her soulmate, Jerry Lee Holcomb; their two daughters, Shannon Rae Hartzell and Dulcie Lynn Holcomb, both of Anderson; her brother and sister-in-law, John and Debi Leap of Rochester; and her sister Ann Blair, also of Rochester, their beloved children and families, as well as a host of other family and friends.

Services for Patsy were held Saturday, Sept. 4, at Loose Funeral Home, Anderson. Visitation was from 1-3 p.m. and services began at 3 p.m.

Letter to the editor Thankful to live in Rochester Dear Editor: I’m thankful to live in Rochester Indiana in the United States of America.

This blesses us with freedoms that are not available every where.

It has cost us a lot to have these freedoms.

To protect these freedoms we must keep informed on what our elected officials are considering to vote on and let then know what we want.

Some of these large package bills hide small bills that are not good for our freedoms.

Ronald C. Bird, 89, Rochester, passed away at 10:37 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2021, at Compassus Hospice of Indianapolis.

On Sept. 15, 1931, Ronald Copley Bird was born in the General Hospital of Indianapolis. He was the treasured son of Cecil and Henrietta Copley Bird. After graduation from Carmel High 521$/' & %,5' School in 1949, Ron answered the call of patriotism, by joining the United States Army Air Corps.

He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1953. Ron continued his education at Butler University. While there, he was a drummer in the pep band.

On Nov. 19, 1983, Ron and Gladys Harling were married in Knoxville, Tenn. They shared 38 years of life’s adventures. With a love for exploring and cruises, Gladys and Ron enjoyed more than 48 cruises navigating waters all over the world. At home they looked forward to cruising around Lake Manitou and watching the sunset. Hosting the Indianapolis 500 Race party Memorial Day weekend was always a great opportunity to make memories, being with family and friends.

Ron had diverse interests, including a love of cars and photography.

The Birds also shared a passion, cheering for Indiana University men’s soccer team. From 1982-2008 they did not miss a game and traveled to all venues wherever they played. The Birds were recognized for their contributions and support of the team.

As entrepreneurs, the Birds founded the Ameri-Can Engineering Company of Argos in 1988. Their firm engineers and develops premier quality luxury restroom and shower trailer systems. In 2018, AmeriCan celebrated its 30-year anniversary. For many years Ron was a member of the Potable Sanitation Association International. He was also a member of the Rochester Lions Club. In 2017, Ron was recognized as a Melvin Jones Fellow, the pinnacle award in Lionism for his service, dedication and contributions to the club.

Princess Christmas Extravaganza to benefit CASA Little girls seeking to meet princesses in real life will have a chance to do so soon locally.

Emperia 110, an event venue at 5729 SR 110, Rochester, around 8 miles west of Mentone, is hosting its first annual Princess Christmas Extravaganza later this year.

Tickets are now on sale for the event Saturday, Dec. 4. There will be two shows from noon to 2 p.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Six to eight Disney princesses are expected to perform and interact with guests. Proceeds from the event will benefit Court Appointed Special Advocates of Kosciusko County.

Tickets are $20 for adults and children and are limited. There’s also an 80 cent service fee. Each child who attends must have an adult with them.

“We hope to raise awareness and funding for the needs of CASA in our area,” said Empeiria 110 Co-Owner Angie Swihart. She also talked about the importance of the organization.

“I was unaware of CASA until I knew someone involved with social work for Kosciusko County,” she said.

“Unfortunately, we live in a world of neglect and abuse. It is so heartbreaking to read and hear stories of innocent children who long to be loved and have security in their home life. This organization gives a voice for that neglected and abused child and helps paint a picture for the judge.

CASA’s ultimate goal is to give the child the best possible outcome. I hope to be more involved with CASA in the future,” she said.

Swihart added she thinks everyone will enjoy the event.

“This event will bring a lot of joy to all those who love their princesses,” she said. “I think it will be just as exciting for Mom, Dad, Grandma, etc., to see the look on their child’s face.”

Fulton County farmer receives River Friendly Farmer award Indiana’s lakes, rivers, streams, and wetlands are valuable natural resources. Protecting these water resources is imperative and 47 farmers received accolades Aug. 18 at the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds for their river friendly efforts.

Glen Jones was named Fulton County’s River Friendly Farmer this year. Jones’ farm currently produces sheep, alfalfa hay, pasture, timber, and row crops by a tenant.

Jones uses intensive rotational grazing. All riparian areas have been converted to hay or pasture.

No till and cover crops are required of his tenants on row crop areas.

His soils are mostly alluvial or outwash with coarse textures. Wind erosion, low organic matter levels and drought are major concerns on the outwash soils. The practices mentioned above have helped to mitigate these issues. They have reduced sedimentation into the streams from erosion. They have trapped sediment during periods of flooding along the Smith Ditch.

The annual River Friendly Farmer Award ceremony recognizes

farmers for their implementation of conservation practices like no till and cover crops, which ultimately protect waterways and improve water quality in Indiana. These farmers were nominated by their local Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

Sponsored by Indiana Farm Bureau, the River Friendly Farmer Award program began in 2000 and has honored more than 1,000 Indiana farms.

This year the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts hosted the event and Board President Bobby Hettmansperger opened the ceremony and remarks were made by Randy Kron, Indiana Farm Bureau president; Jerry Raynor, Indiana state conservationist, Natural Resources Conservation Service; and, Trevor Laureys, director of soil conservation, Indiana State Department of Agriculture. ShriveFest to honor Jeff Shriver and benefit memorial fund %\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Nearly everyone in the Tippecanoe Valley community, and really throughout Fulton County, is aware of the tremendous impact Jeff Shriver had on that school. Shriver died of cancer in 2019, but left behind a legacy that is truly of Viking proportions.

To honor his memory, Valhalla Farms, which is owned by his daughter and son-in-law Stephanie and Drew McCulley, will host the inaugural ShriveFest from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11.

The memorial event will kick off Bell Week (the annual football game between Tippecanoe Valley and Rochester) with great food, live music and lots of fun — all in the company of Shrive’s fa-

vorite people — you, because “You Rock!”

Mouth-watering barbecue with all the fixings will be provided by Outlaw BBQ Smokers and Game Changer Smoker. Live music will be played by Fog Delay featuring several local Valley legends.

“Shrive demonstrated great enthusiasm and passion for his community, epitomizing the Viking spirit,” noted the McCulleys on social media. “With your help we hope ShriveFest will become an opportunity to impact others as he did! All proceeds will benefit the Jeffery Smith Shriver Good Better Best Memorial Funds.”

“ShriveFest is a way to continue to give back to the community,” noted Stephanie McCulley. “It’s a celebration of the dedication and enthusiasm he had for the community and the people around

him.”

McCulley also noted a scholarship fund has been established through the Fulton County Community Foundation. Already the fund has been able to provide scholarships to two Tippecanoe Valley football players, as well as 10-year 4-H Beef Club members.

“We’ll have pulled pork and brisket for dinner,” she continued.

“It will be a great chance for people to hang out, tell stories and enjoy some good food.”

The cost of the meal is $12 per plate, and includes meat, sides, dessert and drinks. Any additional contribution is welcome and appreciated, and will go to the scholarship fund.

Benefit dinner in honor of Zebra football coach First Christian Church of Rochester is hosting a benefit dinner for Ken Hughes; it will be held at the practice football fields at Rochester High School 4-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, prior to the Rochester versus Tippecanoe Valley football game.

Enjoy Burkett’s pulled pork sandwiches, chips, cookie and a drink for $8. Tickets are available at First Christian Church, 1101 Madison St., Rochester, any Rochester school or at the dinner.

Hughes has been a fixture on the sidelines of Zebra football since 2005. He is currently in 35th year of coaching, with the past 16 being at Rochester High School. While he enjoys winning football games, his biggest victory has been beating cancer.

He was diagnosed in 2005 with chondrosarcoma in his right hip and had surgery at that time to remove the 28 centimeter mass.

The cancer returned in 2008 and

was treated with radiation. When it returned in 2011, he underwent a hemipelvectomy to remove his right pelvis, hip and leg. This radical surgery removed all the bones that contained the cancer and has allowed him to remain cancer free.

In January 2021, he lost the use of his arms due to a herniated disc in his neck. While surgery to repair the disc was simple, the recovery was not. He did not regain the strength of full use of his arms and this meant he couldn’t transfer or move himself independently as he had before this surgery. The extended time spent in bed recovering led to pressure sores. In March, he had surgery to clean and stabilize the wounds and spent three months in the hospital. At this time, he is back to teaching and coaching, but he still requires wound care three times a week. This eight month medical journey included two

surgeries, and extended hospital stay, home healthy care equipment, wound care supplies, a new wheelchair and generates substantial medial bills.

Hughes and his wife, Christina Hughes, along with his children are thankful for the First Christian Church, the Rochester Community Schools and the community for their support.

Community meals return to Rochester The popular weekly Wednesday night community meals are coming back to Rochester.

The meals will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 201 W. Seventh St., Rochester.

They will begin every Wednes-

day from 5:30-7 p.m. starting Sept. 8. The doors will open at 5:15 p.m.. Carry-out will begin at 6:30 p.m.

If any COVID changes are necessary, the meals will continue with carry-out only.

United Way celebrating 2020 with a free lunch Fulton County United Way had a fantastic 2020 year. Not many can say that due to the pandemic, but the community stepped up and allowed Fulton County United Way to meet its goal.

Each year the goal is raise more than $100,000 and for the first time in recent history that goal was met.

Fulton County United Way Inc. is vital to the community.

Their mission is to educate the community about United Way and gather donations for various groups and organizations within the community.

On top of the money raised this past year, Fulton County United Way was able to apply for a few grants and received additional funding related to COVID relief.

With the grant money they were able to assist with community needs including housing and food.

The money raised each year is currently used to support the fol-

lowing organizations: United Ministries, Pack a Backpack, Fulton County Animal Shelter, CASA, RSVP, Fulton County Council on Aging, Salvation Army, Manitou Training Center and Helping Hands.

Looking ahead to 2021 they know there are still many uncertainties within the community due to the pandemic, but Fulton County United Way is still pushing ahead and hoping for a great response this year. The United Way is celebrating their kick off to the campaign season 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10. Join them for a free lunch of pulled pork, chips, cookies and drinks outside the Fulton County United Way Office in downtown Rochester.

Several times I saw a hairy woodpecker

By Neil Case and once, a few days ago, I saw a flicker. But for several days now there have been no red-bellied woodpeckers.

The red-bellied woodpecker is named for a patch of red on the belly of an adult, both male and female. But a red-bellied woodpecker has more red on its head than on its belly. It’s bright red from its bill over the top of its head and down the back of its neck. Its back is banded, black and white. Its breast and belly are gray, its rump is white and its tail is black.

The range of the red-bellied woodpecker is from the Atlantic Coast to the western edge of the Great Plains of America and from the northern states of the U.S. south to the Gulf Coast and all of Florida. That range, according to maps in my books, includes northwest Iowa where I lived when I was young. But I never saw a redbellied woodpecker in Iowa, not when I was young and not since.

The first red-bellied woodpeckers I ever saw were at the bird feeders outside my dining room window, here in Indiana.

Was this the first year I’ve seen red-bellied woodpeckers at my feeders? I don’t remember. But I assumed so and when red-bellied woodpeckers didn’t come to my feeders anymore this year, I just thought they had gone south, migrated. That or they were going

to somebody else’s feeders or they had moved into a woodlot they found attractive.

All woodpeckers have sharppointed bills, short legs with sharp claws and stiff tail feathers. They cling to the wood of trees and use their tails as props. They chisel into the wood of trees and get grubs and other insects for food.

They also chisel out holes in trees and nest in the holes they make.

Woodpeckers don’t always nest in holes. They sometimes hollow out the top of a rotting stump, then lay their eggs and raise their brood in the top of the stump. I found a woodpecker stump nest, once. It had two nestlings and adult birds were flying back and forth to the stump, carrying food and feeding the nestlings.

There are no woodpeckers in Australia or Madagascar, but there are woodpeckers in almost every other area of the world. In the United States, there are 45 species and subspecies. But the numbers have changed and are changing. As I have already written, I have never seen a red-bellied woodpecker in my hometown in northwest Iowa.

Red-headed woodpeckers were common in northern Iowa, where I lived when I was a boy. I saw them going to nest holes commonly. But the last time I was in my hometown, I didn’t see a single redheaded woodpecker. Red-headed woodpeckers have become rare, not just in Iowa, but everywhere.

Red-heads have a broad range, however, and I have seen a redhead in Indiana, rarely, and never more than one at a time.

Woodpeckers are numerous and varied. A downy woodpecker is slightly smaller than a cardinal.

A pileated woodpecker is nearly as big as a crow. Many species of woodpecker have red on the head or, in the case of the red-headed woodpecker, a red-head, the pileated woodpecker, male, has a pointed, bright red crest. The crest of the female is black. I’ve never seen a pileated woodpecker at one of my bird feeders, but my older son has a pileated that visits his bird feeders occasionally.

My question now, a question that makes bird watching particularly interesting, will red-bellied woodpeckers return to my bird feeders next summer?

While the Haney family is now in its seventh generation on the same land, it was only last year Haney Farm Market opened for business to offer farm-to-table beef to area residents.

“We thought about doing this for a long time,” said owner Jeremiah Haney. “We had planned to open in March 2020, but because of COVID we weren’t able to start until last September.

When we opened, we had no idea what to expect.”

This month, the Haneys are celebrating the one-year anniversary of a highly successful business venture. Each month, they send three of their familyraised cows to J & J Quality Meats in Bourbon for butchering. The meat is packaged and then sold at Haney Farm Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Saturday. Every cut of beef is available, although Haney noted the most choice cuts of steak are often sold out quickly.

The family has around 500 head of cattle on the farm, plus around 160 dairy cows. Haney works closely with his father, Kevin Haney, and wife Rachel to keep the farm in top operational shape.

“We saw a need for this in the community,” Haney said. “We

During the Saturday business hours, Haney noted Lauren Shafer of Rock Lake Farms is there as well, selling local chicken, pork and produce. He added they usually have a supply of locally-sourced eggs and honey for sale.

In the past week, two school boards in the region have held closed-door executive sessions to discuss possible changes to backto-school guidelines as cases of the diseases caused by the novel coronavirus continue to rise in Miami County.

In both instances, the boards provided notice of the meetings citing, as required, one of the enumerated reasons within state code that allows for private meetings. Both provided the language in the code saying they were meeting to “discuss the assessment, design and implementation of school safety and security measures, plans and systems.”

Superintendents at both schools said they were advised by their attorneys to use that provision to call

But Luke Britt, the Indiana Public Access Counselor, said he doesn’t believe that is the proper use.

“No, in my opinion it is not,” he told the Tribune Monday, Aug. 30.

Instead, he said, it was designed to discuss things like responses to “more of a man-made hazard.” In such a meeting, boards could discuss things like lockdown procedures for instances when students’ safety is threatened.

Keeping discussion of that information out of a public meeting has the benefit of keeping it from people who “could exploit that for nefarious reasons,” Britt said.

Monday was not the first time Britt had been asked.

In an October memo, available through his office’s website, Britt said the question of school boards’ usage of executive sessions to develop back-to-school plans had been a “frequent inquiry.”

The memo notes the enumerated reasons, and applicable code, under which the boards may hold such a session and said that “active threats and responses should indeed be kept in-house to ensure those who intend to visit harm schoolchildren or staff are not privy to those plans.”

“Back-to-school plans during the COVID-19 pandemic may be a separate issue, however, and not exactly what the legislature intended,” he wrote. “While serious and not to be dismissed, COVID-19 is a passive threat insofar as public knowledge of public health plans will not give COVID a heads-up to target a child or a building. The virus, thankfully, does not have eyes and ears. The

harm comes from the virus itself and not from knowledge of mitigation efforts.”

“It is difficult to imagine a scenario wherein those plans – or safety considerations generally – would be compromised if discussions were held during a public meeting.”

However, he pointed out in the memo, “the statute is clear and unambiguous in that it includes school safety plans without qualification.”

“To the extent school boards

choose to hold executive sessions under these auspices, the wording of the law would likely support that decision,” he wrote. “The intent and purpose of the law, however, is another matter altogether. Therefore it is the official position of this office that back-to-school pandemic plan discussions should be held in public.”

When asked if boards were holding executive sessions in order to deliberate in a more peaceful en-

vironment before presenting a proposal to the public, Britt said that shouldn’t matter.

Any board, he said, has the authority to remove people from a public business meeting who are causing a disruption, and calling a private meeting to avoid having to do that in anticipation of a discussion becoming heated is not the proper use of an executive session.

“The board has control over its meeting,” he said.

The hearing was originally supposed to happen Wednesday.

However, as Town Clerk-Treasurer Nicki Norris explained, she had trouble with the internet connection during a meeting with the state regarding the budget.

She was able to meet online with a state representative on a later date, but that pushed back the date of the public hearing as entities must wait at least 10 days after meeting with the state on the budget to have a public hearing.

The council’s next regular meeting is 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at Mentone Town Hall.

Let’s study the Bible Walking with God Read Genesis 5:1-27 “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had trans%\ 5(9 521 lated him: 385.(< for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impossible to

please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Hebrews 11:5-6) Enoch is one of only two people who did not experience death (Elijah is the other; see 2 Kings 2:1-12). Why? Hebrews says it’s because he pleased God (Hebrews 11:5). That doesn’t mean, of course, if you’re pleasing God you won’t die. But it does mean his departure from the world was a direct result of how he lived. He lived a godly life within the context of an evil and corrupt society.

What he did mattered.

Do you want to live in a way that pleases God? Then you must know without faith it is impos-

sible to please God. You must believe he exists and rewards those who seek him (Hebrews 11:6). You must operate by faith, even if you must do so alone and go against the accepted norms of the day. You must believe with expectation God responds — regarding his will for your life — when you seek to please him.

In a wicked age, Enoch lived a dedicated life; he did this by trusting God’s word. “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly

deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him” (Jude 14-15). He believed God would reward him for his faith, and God did so by taking him to heaven so he did not die. The reward of faith is important in Hebrews (Hebrews 10:35; 11:26; 12:11).

Our faith in God grows as we fellowship with God. We must have both the desire to please him and the diligence to seek him. Prayer, meditating on the word, worship, discipline — all of these help us in our walk with God. Enoch walked with God in the wicked world, before the flood came; he was able to keep

his life pure. Enoch was taken to heaven one day (“translated” i.e., “carried across”) and seen no more. Abel died a violent death, but Enoch never died. God has a different plan for each one who trusts him. Some see in the translation of Enoch a picture of the rapture of the church when Jesus Christ returns (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).

May it be said of you and me as it was said of Enoch: “He walked with God.” We must go in God’s direction, doing what God wants us to do.
