RDP was initially “spun out of the chamber of commerce” around 2014 for the purpose of obtaining more grants, such as the Main Street Revitalization Program, which have brought nearly $1 million dollars into downtown projects, 80% of it provided by the state. The funding has gone into historical preservation and helped counteract the decline of downtown buildings. The fruits of the investment can be seen in the facade and awning projects, bike racks, benches, art and mural projects. The Times Theater board’s renovation project

On Saturday, Aug. 27, the Nickel Plate Music and Arts Festival drew a crowd to downtown Rochester, where families were able to take in a day of free activities and events. Even as the sun was setting, the courthouse lawn remained full of people in lawn chairs and on blankets listening to musicians from near and far who had covered a wide range of styles throughout the day.The Nickel Plate Festival is one of many events spearheaded by Rochester Downtown Partnership, a nonprofit organization composed of “an alliance of community members focused on creating a positive atmosphere for the City of Rochester,” as its busy Facebook partnership,facebook.com/rochesterdowntown-page,reports.“Theheartandsoulofacom-

Davis brings her energy and creativity to FCPL
Davis also helped start the Rather Be Reading Book Club, which meets at 4 p.m. every other Thursday and includes several home-schoolers. The group is very self-motivated, she noted. “I’m just there to guide them.” Currently, Davis is working on earning an LC4 library certification, and in the future she hopes to become more involved with collection development, a natural move for someone who both reads and writes young adult fiction. She is also looking forward to doing this year’s fall decorations, which will include a scarecrow.“It’sadream job,” Davis said of working in the library. “It’s different than any other job I’ve done … I get to do crafts and be creative, and when I go home I still feel energized.”
They were married in January 2022.“Ialways loved to read anything I could get my hands on.” From a young age she also created her own storybooks. Davis continues to write fiction for all ages in her free time. Davis attended Purdue University, where she majored in professional writing with minors in child development and classical literature and culture. All have come in handy at the library. After graduation she worked for five years at Fulton County Medical Clinic, which is where she also met Calvert. After starting out as a circulation clerk, Davis was moved to her current position as youth services assistant. Her responsibilities include working on outreach projects with preschools and day cares, where she does in-person story times and craft times. She is also deeply involved with the summer reading program and is responsible for much of the library decorations, which are alwaysEverychanging.Tuesday, Davis creates craft kits for kids to assemble at home or at the library. She also makes an online tutorial for home use. Past projects have included a hoop glider and a “squawking chicken,” which utilized a plastic cup and string for the sound effect. She carefully chooses the projects for young children up to the second grade. “I want to challenge but not confuse them.”
Every Thursday at 3 p.m. Morgan Davis, Rochester Public Library youth services librarian, sets up a computer in the corner of a meeting room and performs that week’s virtual story time on FacebookBecauseLive.her audience is viewing at home and often at a later time, Davis performs to an empty room; nevertheless, she interacts with the screen as though it were a room full of faces watching in rapt attention, leading them in songs, asking questions and leaving time for them to think of answers. It takes a particular sort of energy and creativity to pull off such a performance, and Davis possesses both. “I try to treat it like an in-person story time,” she said. “Even though I’m talking to myself, I think of them at home yelling at theThescreen.”library’s virtual story time is a vestige of the COVID pandemic when most programming was made virtual out of necessity. It was during this time, in 2020, that Davis was hired at the suggestion of Jennifer Calvert, youth services director. Davis, whose maiden name is Herrold, is one of three girls who grew up on their parents’ dairy farm in Grass Creek. “It was a wonderful little place to grow up,” recalled the former 4-H’er. She now resides close by in Metea with her husband, Brett.

There are still spaces available with a month remaining for families to “commemorate their hero.” In January the banners will go up and remain hanging until May, when school art posters are hung. “We’re always looking for community input,” Hisey added, in case anyone has their own idea for a downtown project. Along with the Nickel Plate Festival, activities such as Boo Fest and Holiday Stroll are also the work of RDP volunteers. The Design Committee is one of what Webb calls the “three-legged stool” composing RDP. Other committees include Organization, responsible for managing finances and overseeing the logistics; and Promotion, which works toward marketing an “appealing image of downtown Rochester to shoppers, retailers, investors and visitors. This committee also works on events and promotions in the downtown area like the Nickel Plate Festival to bring in additional visitors to the community. “We have a lot of good momentum,” Webb observed; however, RDP is always in need of volunteers. “It takes time and people. Rather than asking, ‘Why isn’t something happening?’ You just have to step up and help.” For more information,

“We still think we are hometown,” Smith said. “That’s who we are.” Smith’s parents were proponents in the Rochester and surrounding area communities. They believed it was important to give back to the community in which they serve. The Smith Sawyer Smith Agency continues those beliefs today. Smith expressed, “We invest time in local schools, events, committees, leagues and businesses.” He is proud to say they are staffed with those with a lot of community giving. “We are chamber members, council members, coaches, church members.”Theinsurance industry is constantly changing. “Change is inevitable and we will continue to change to do a good job for the people we serve,” Smith noted.
Expanding from a regional agency with one location into a national agency with agents in a multitude of states all came with help from Smith’s co-owner and agency managing principal, Ryan Zimpleman.

Mart Smith, now owner and partner, his grandfather, father, brother, brother-in-law, daughter and nephew all have worked for the insurance agency. “We have always been a family that enjoyed being together,” Smith explains. “My dad gave us the opportunity to do this together and help our community.” They are set apart from other insurance agencies because of those family principles. Those same principles have given them longevity and reliability as a national Independent Insurance Agency, managing insurance for families, individuals, businesses. They have expanded throughout the Midwest, West Coast and Northeast regions.
One big change for the agency was moving locations in 2018. For 90 years, The Smith Sawyer and Smith Agency was in the same building. When they moved into the new building, two miles of wiring was put in. This helped the agency continue constant contact with other agencies in addition to helping them expand to remote locations.
Business profile — Not your small-towntypicalagency
A small family-owned insurance agency called Hasket and Jones opened its doors in 1925 in Rochester. Little did they know then that the company would expand into a four-generation national business by Since2022.their doors opened 97 years ago, although the name on the sign has changed, The Smith Sawyer Smith Insurance Agency has maintained a family-owned status. They have instilled principles that have led the business for generations.
The Smith Sawyer Smith Agency is licensed to do business in all 50 states.“We aren’t your typical smalltown agency” stated Smith. “We employ 45 people; that’s unusual for a small-town agency.” Smith continued to explain that at The Smith Sawyer and Smith Agency, they have three national programs and have locations in Peru, Indianapolis and two in Michigan. These locations and national programs have allowed them to cater to a larger area of clients.

things which must shortly be done. Revelation 22:6. With a new heaven and earth, God reverses all the tragedies that sin brought to the original creation. The old Heaven and Earth were plunged into judgment; this new Heaven and Earth glisten withEdenperfection.hadan earthly river (Genesis 2:10-14), but here we have a wonderful heavenly river. The tree of life in Eden was guarded after man sinned (Genesis 3:24), but here the heavenly tree of life is available to God’s people. The curse was pronounced in Genesis 3:14-17, but now there is no more curse. Adam and Eve were forced to leave the original paradise and labor for their daily bread, but here mankind serves God and sees his face in perfect fellowship. When the first man and woman sinned, they became slaves and lost their kingship, but Revelation 22:5 indicates this kingship will be regained, and we shall reign with Jesus Christ forever. The present creation is not God’s final product. It is groaning and travailing under the bondage of sin (Romans 8:18-23). But one day, the Lord will usher in his new creation, and we believers will enjoy perfect liberty and fullness of life forever. Three times at the close of this book Christ says, “I come quickly!” (Revelation 22:7, 12, 20). The word “quickly” suggests “swiftly.” It means when these great events start to occur, there will be no delay. We do not know when Jesus Christ will appear, and it is wise to be ready. In Daniel 12:4, the prophet was told to seal up the book. John, on the other hand, was commanded not to seal the book because “the time is at hand” (Revelation 22:10). Daniel’s words would not be fulfilled for many years; John’s prophecy would come to pass shortly. Revelation 22:11 is not an enticement for sinners to remain unchanged; otherwise the invitation in verse 17 would be a mockery. Instead, verse 11 is warning us that continued sin defines character and character determines destiny. “The wicked shall do wickedly,” says Daniel 12:10. When Christ comes, our true character will beAnotherrevealed.lesson of this verse is that people make their own decisions; the Lord does not force them to be either wicked or righteous. Compare Revelation 22:15 with Revelation 21:8. In Revelation 22:7 and 12, the Lord has said, “I come quickly!” In verse 17, the Holy Spirit and the bride say “Come!” to the Lord Jesus. The Holy Spirit prays through the church for the return of the Savior.Lost souls are invited to “Come, drink of the water of life.” The last prayer of the Bible is that of the Holy Spirit through John saying, “Even so come, Lord Jesus!” This ought to be our daily prayer too.

The church was at the gas station for about 2 1/2 hours and they pumped $30 of gas for the first 122 individuals that came.
Susan Pyeatt, wife of Pastor Larry Pyeatt, was also giving away pennies in memory of her father, who lost his fight with cancer after running a vicious race. The pennies were a comfort to her father, Susan recalled. “As he was in the IU hospital parking lot, he found a penny on the ground and said, ‘Look at that, you know what that means?’ to my sister, who said, ‘Find a penny, pick it up, the rest of the day you’ll have good luck,’ to which he said, ‘No matter what the doctor says, the PET scan shows we will read “In God We Trust” and we will continue to trust in God.’”
There are many struggling financially right now, and this event was the church’s effort to help the community as much as they could. “People can get help with rent and utilities, but not gas,” said Larry, “and for that, people felt Accordingblessed.”toLarry, this generous act of the church was greatly appreciated by everyone who witnessed it. Everyone was touched; some were brought to tears and others even felt comfortable enough to share their story. He noted they prayed for these people, many with special needs and those who were experiencing difficulty and struggle. Susan said, “Our church knows people are having a hard time and may be facing a trial, sickness, depression or even fear, so in dad’s words, I wanted them to be reminded to trust in God.“This is just a little something we can do to help 125 families. It is the exact date a year ago that I lost my courageous dad. He was a wonderful and giving man and this would make him so proud; it is something he would be a part of.”Rochester Church of God offered their support to the community during these trying times through spreading love and prayers.
Rochester Church of God hosted an event at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, where they prayed and gave away gas and cookies to over 100 people at the Rochester Amoco gas station.

In one scam, a fraudster copies a description of a local property that was recently listed for rent on a legitimate website to create a false real estate listing. The fraudster then engages with consumers and requests a security deposit and/ or first month’s rent to be paid to them in Bitcoin using a Bitcoin ATM. Once the money has been exchanged, the scammer either avoids contact with the consumer or seeks additional funds from them.Inanother scam, the fraudster targets would-be real estate investors while posing as a legitimate Indiana-based business. The fraudster may even provide false identity documents in an effort to depict a readiness to provide capital for real estate investments. The scammer often requests significant sums of money in Bitcoin or a similar cryptocurrency to close transactions. If successful in bilking victims of initial payments, the fraudster will often seek additional sums from the victim by claiming that more money is needed to close. Before engaging in any cryptocurrency payments in exchange for products or services:
• Exercise caution. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
• Only send cryptocurrency to trusted third parties. Search for publicly verifiable reviews or articles involving the recipient.

Attorney General Todd Rokita recommends Hoosiers proceed with caution when using cryptocurrency in any transaction involving the sale or lease of real estate. “Cryptocurrency has become increasingly popular due to its ease of use and other factors,” Rokita said. “But scammers have jumped on this bandwagon as well, and we want to help Hoosiers avoid becoming unwitting victims.”
