Libraries are famous for being quiet places; however, throughout 2020, Fulton County Public Library in Rochester was even quieter than usual as a result of COVID-19 precautions, with much of its programming made virtual or cancelled indeﬁnitely. This summer all that changed, starting with the 2021 summer reading program, and now the library’s long list of in-house pro-

gramming is back up and running, offering residents of all ages classes and activities covering a wide variety of subjects, including arts and crafts, computers and technology, legal assistance, games, movies and more, nearly all of it free of charge. “In May we had a couple of inhouse activities,” recalled FCPL Director Andrea Stineback, “and then in June we had the summer reading program. Now we’re keeping up the momentum and continuing to have more programming.” Debbie’s Dandies adult craft

Rochester woman living proof of God’s love and provision %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “I was diagnosed with a brain tumor right after Thanksgiving 2020,” stated Teresita Sitjar, Rochester. “My story encourages others to walk by faith. God is in control and he works out all things for the good of those who love Him. The Lord was with me during my diagnosis, operation, recovery and now that I’m back in the work world. But what’s more amazing is that he had everything worked out ahead of time.” Sitjar is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rochester. In Sept. 2020, she began watching the movie “Our Lady of Fatima.” “The account took place in 1917. During World War I, the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. She encouraged them to pray the rosary for the conversion of sinners and for the end of the war.” The movie inspired Sitjar to organize her own rosary group. “I invited Catholics all over Indiana to pray for the conversion of sinners and for our war to end COVID-19.” In October, Sitjar met with ladies at her church on Mondays at 6 p.m. to pray. “At this time, I also began to read my Bible more and pray fervently. I was drawing closer and closer to the Lord.” However, she was also getting quieter. “I’m usually a bubbly person. I began to withdraw into myself. My husband Julius is

7(5(6,7$ 6,7-$5 a doctor and I am his nurse. I started forgetting things and he became irritated at me. My four grown children and two grandchildren also spotted a personality change in me.” That Thanksgiving, the family had a talk with Sitjar. “My husband thought I had Alzheimer’s disease. The Monday after Thanksgiving I went in for an MRI.” The MRI showed malignant glioblastoma. “The brain tumor was fast growing and my brain was swollen. When my husband told me I had a brain tumor, I was at peace. I was never afraid.” Consulting with the neurosurgeon who’d performed surgery on Julius’s neck, the doctor recommended a neurosurgeon at Mayo Clinic. Because the tumor was a fast-growing cancer, the neurosurgeon at Mayo decided to work Sitjar in, doing surgery on Thursday, Dec. 17. “The surgery was scheduled for 5 a.m. and I was to be in the operating room for nine hours. They let me take my rosary and a small statue of the Virgin Mary with me.”

The doctor warned Sitjar of the risks. “Because the tumor was attached to the optic nerve on the right frontal lobe of my brain, there was a chance I would go blind, have a stroke or become paralyzed. The neurosurgeon said I’d be in rehab for three weeks.” Sitjar came through the operation with ﬂying colors. “Even the surgeon admits it was miraculous. I could see and didn’t need rehab. I was out of the hospital and going home that Saturday.” After coming home, she was ordered to rest from work for six weeks. “My daughter and I wrote close to 500 letters to the Catholic churches in Indiana sharing my story.” Sitjar was featured in the Lafayette Diocese’s “Catholic Moment” magazine last May. “Now I’m back on the job as a nurse and sharing what God is doing for me each day. Years ago, I had arthritis in my back so bad I had a shot in my back every October for three years. When there was an article in the paper for Dr. Gotts, it mentioned soap. I tried it. As it turned out, no more shots. No more pain in my back, hands and no leg cramps. I replace it about once a month or if I need to replace the bar in the sink or tub. I put a fresh one under the sheet and use the one I had under the sheet in the bathroom where needed. It doesn’t hurt to try and it’s cheap. I’m 85 and painless. — A reader

Riverview Community Church Member Mary Beth Masterson, 71, Rochester, went home to be with the Lord at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2021, at Hickory Creek of Rochester. She was born April 11, 1950, in Evansville. She became the loving daughter of Betty (Huff) and Devon Shuman in Rochester in 1953. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1968. On Dec. 23, 1976, in Rochester, she married Delbert Masterson and he survives in Rochester. Beth had worked for Bob’s Lock and Key, had worked in the insurance industry, had been a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother. She attended Riverview Community Church. Surviving along with Delbert are her son, Dave (Allison) Masterson, Brownsburg; son-in-law, Tim Kindig, Bluffton; grandchildren, Austin (Emily) Kindig, Bluffton, Zach and Adam Tyler, Brownsburg, Grayson and Shelbee Olinger, Rochester; great-grandchildren, Giovanni, Isabella, Therese, Basil and Aurlia Kindig; sister, Debbie (Dave) Swango, Rochester; brothers, Brent Shuman, Bill (Joan) Dawson, South Bend, and Budd (Susan) Dawson, Warsaw; and brother-in-law, Tim Thompson, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, DeVona Kindig; sister, Linda Thompson; and brother, Dick McGothlin. Kewanna Public Library ends summer reading program Kewanna Public Library wants to congratulate its readers for making the summer reading program a huge success. The eightweek program began June 1 and ended July 24. One hundred thirty-two readers participated in the program this year. The readers were very busy reading, completing Craft To Go Kits, and attending lots of summer reading events and summer programs. The special summer reading events were a summer reading kick-off, peaceable primate sanctuary event, Cookies & Canvas, Tippecanoe River State Park event, petting zoo, Kewanna Fire Department safety program, Rochester martial arts demonstration, a stuffed animal sleepover & tea, and end of sum-

mer reading celebration. It is appreciated to all of those who contributed to these special events. Many prizes were given this summer including weekly prizes, art bag contest prizes, and Indiana State Park passes. June and July prize winners were Ezekiel Helt and Lyanna Snider, who won four tickets to the Isis Theater, Marshall Finke, who won a signed Indianapolis Colts football, and Harper Howell, who won four tickets to an Indy 11 game. No, for then he could have gloried in his accomplishment, and we have no record of such action in the Old Testament. What does the scripture say? “Abraham believed God.” (See Genesis 15:1-6.) The gift of righteousness came, not by works, but by faith in God’s revealed word. Notice in his argument, Paul used the words “reckon,” “impute,” and “count” (Romans 5:3-6, 8-11, 2224). These words all mean the same thing: to put to a person’s account. Justification means righteousness imputed (put to our account) and gives us a right standing before God. Sanctification means righteousness imparted (made a part of our life) and gives us a right standing before men, so they believe we are Christians. Both are a part of salvation, as James 2:14-26 argues. Salvation is either a reward for works or a gift through grace; it cannot be both. Romans 5:5 states God justifies the ungodly (not the righteous) through faith and not works. The Hebrews thought God justified

Rochester Community School Corporation announced Kevin Renie as the new athletic director, replacing Ryan Johnson. Johnson resigned July 22. Renie was hired at the Aug. 16 school board meeting. Renie will be the fourth Rochester Athletic Director since 2011, however he is no stranger to the leadership role. He joins the RHS Athletic Department with more than 10 years of experience, as he was the athletic director for Maconaquah High School and Maconaquah Middle School. While at Maconaquah he was also the assistant principal at the middle school. Following his time at Maconaquah, he was the man who helped those in the Rochester and surrounding communities ﬁnd car and home owners insurance for more than 10 years. Renie returned to his education roots and has been teaching fourth grade in Logansport for the last four years. When the position for the

Efforts underway to install Safe Haven Baby Box in Rochester The Knights of Columbus Council 5584 of St. Joseph Church in Rochester is leading an initiative to have a Safe Haven Baby Box installed at the fire department, 2006 E. SR 14, Rochester. The purpose of the box is to help prevent illegal and potentially deadly abandonment of infants by raising awareness of the Indiana Safe Haven Law and resources for mothers in crisis. It will be the 74th box in Indiana and the first in Fulton County. Since April 2016, when the first box was installed, there have not been any infant deaths due to abandonment in the state. The Knights of Columbus from St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rochester has applied for grants and is seeking the community’s assistance to raise the funds to cover the installation and ongoing expenses related to the baby box. The initial cost is $15,000 and includes the purchase of the Safe Haven Baby Box; labor to install the box, electricity and alarm; and training for emergency personnel. Ongoing expenses estimated at $500 a year include the annual recertification of the box, maintenance and alarm monitoring service fee. To date, the Knights of Columbus has secured $5,000 in funding via a $2,500 grant from REMC and fundraising efforts. The Indiana Safe Haven Law enables a person to give up an unwanted infant anonymously without fear of arrest or prosecution. As long as there are no signs of intentional abuse on the baby, no information is required of the person leaving the baby. Any knowledge of the date of birth, race, parent medical history, child’s health or anything useful to the child’s caregiver is appreciated.” The Safe Haven Baby Box legally permits a mother to surrender her newborn safely, securely and anonymously. The box will be installed in an exterior wall of the ﬁre department. Once the exterior door to the baby box is opened, a silent alarm is triggered and a call goes to police dispatch. After the newborn is placed into the bassinet inside of the box, a second silent alarm triggers a second alert to dispatch. A button can be pushed or the door simply closed to set off a third alarm and call to dispatch. The exterior door automatically locks. An interior door allows a medical staff member to safely secure the newborn. The child is evaluated and taken to the hospital. The Indiana Department of Child Services will take the baby into custody and Child Protective Services will place the infant with a caregiver. The Safe Haven crisis hot line, (866) 99BABY1, is prominently displayed on the Safe Haven Baby Box. The hot line provides 24-hour dedicated emergency counseling and support for parents in crisis. Eligible projects must provide industry relied for the impact of COVID-19 and enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops in Indiana.
