over the last 20 years, just one of its regular, community-minded activities. According to Wisely, Rochester Garden Club has been active for over 50 years and has its roots in the “Welcome Wagon,” a group of “older women in Kewanna who greeted new residents with a basket of goodies.” In this tradition, club members brought plants and shrubs from their own gardens to give the new Habitat home a more lived-in feel, “so it looks less like it

popped out of the ground like a mushroom,” Wisley commented. Dot Showley oversaw the club’s Habitat for Humanity project this year, planting a variety of lilies, hostas and hardy shrubs such as golden jumper, a variety of spirea. Rochester Garden Club spans generations, with members aged 30 to 80 who meet once a month in members’ homes. “I learn something all the time,” said Wisely, who confessed

to knowing very little about gardening when she moved to the area in 1971. Along with simply sharing plants and gardening tips, the club has two primary goals: beautification and conservation. This summer members pulled weeds and planted flowers at businesses along Ninth Street to improve this “entrance to Rochester.” They also maintain flowers around the flagpole at Prairie Edge Nature Park on CR 150N.
