Nickel Plate Music & Arts Festival %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU Downtown Rochester will ring with a variety of styles of music, entertainment and revelers at the inaugural Nickel Plate Music & Arts Festival, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, on 8th Street between Madison and Main streets and on the courthouse grounds. The event is hosted by Rochester Downtown Partnership. “We have many sponsors and donors who are helping make this event possible,” said Christine Walsh, director of promotions for the partnership. “I am part of a great team putting the festival together. We are really excited to be bringing a festival, especially after what we experienced, or really, didn’t get to experience this past year with COVID.” Among the scheduled events: • 11 a.m., Rochester High School band

• 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., face painting, balloon art, henna and caricature drawings by Sweetcakes Entertainment • Noon, singing of the national anthem by contest winner • 1 to 3 p.m., first slate of musicians • 3:30 to 5 p.m., second slate of musicians • 8 to 10 p.m., closing band Hideous Business Musicians include guitarist and singer John Bahler and De Hurricane Reggae Band “and a couple of local musician favorites are planning to pop in later in the day,” said Walsh. “When we know the time slots we will update the schedule on our Facebook page. And I’m still collecting local and out-of-the-area artists.” From now through Sunday, Aug. 22, the partnership is holding a contest to determine who will sing the national anthem. Contestants are asked to post a video of their singing the na-

tional anthem on the festival’s Facebook page. The person with the most likes will be given the honor and win $25 in Chamber Bucks. Likes posted after Aug. 22 will not be counted. Other activities will include several make-and-take art projects; face-in-the-hole photo ops; and a musical petting zoo, which allows kids to “come up and try out different instruments,” said Walsh. “We have a few more things, but people will just have to come and see what else is going on.” “We have limited space this year,” Walsh said, “but are looking for vendors who specifically do art or handmade items. The spaces are filling up quickly.” The event is free to the public, with the only cost being purchases from the food, art and craft vendors. Walsh offered some advice so attendees can maximize their experience at the festival.

“People should come with chairs or blankets and be prepared to take their time. Listen to music, do all the art projects, grab some food and don’t forget the sunblock.” She also issued a call for participation in administrating the festival. “We are looking for volunteers who would like to be part of this event for the community. Even if it’s only for a couple hours, we would sure appreciate the help. The more volunteers we have, the more art projects we can do. We are also looking for sponsors and donations.” Monetary donations can be dropped off at the chamber office, 822 S. Main St., Rochester, or mailed to P.O. Box 975, Rochester, IN 46975. For more information or to request a vendor application, email promotions@rdpworks.com. Festival updates can be found at www.facebook.com/nickelplatemusicartsfestival.
