Pro bono service is work done by attorneys free of charge, for the good of the public.

The clients aren’t the only ones to benefit. “I think most attorneys find providing pro bono services to be a rewarding experience,” said Andrew Perkins, a partner at Peterson, Waggoner & Perkins LLP in Rochester. “It often involves relatively simple legal tasks, for which clients are very appreciative. Working with Pro Bono Indiana helps firms like ours use our resources wisely, for those individuals most in need.”

The organization’s legal aid clinic takes 15- to 20-minute reserved appointments from 1-4 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month at the Fulton County Public Library, 320 W. 7th St., Rochester. According to library guidelines, masks are suggested but not required.

Kevin Jones serves as the plan administrator for District E, which includes Fulton, Pulaski, Cass, Miami, Wabash, Howard, Grant and Tipton counties. The Rochester clinic serves both Fulton and Pulaski counties, providing help for 30 to 40 clients a year.

Some clients with simpler legal matters are assisted in using the self-help website, www.indianalegalhelp.org, which Jones helps manage. Pro Bono Indiana also helps individuals file pro se, without representation, by completing paperwork approved by an attorney.

To qualify for representation, prospective clients must have an income below 125% of the poverty guidelines, considering the incomes of every member living under the same roof.

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR Local sports figure finishes mile in under four minutes %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “I ran the mile at a professional track meet called the Music City Track Carnival in Nashville,” stated Wesley Meyer. “It’s a very popular event here in the midsouth for fast runners. It’s not uncommon for Olympians, world medalists and even world champions to race at that meet. This year, I finished second with a time of 3:59.69. This was a four-second personal best for me.”

The race is actually 1,609 meters in distance, as opposed to the 1,600 meters that is contested at the high school level.

Although Meyer lives in Ten-

nessee now, he’s a 2016 Rochester High School graduate, where he was a three-sport athlete, competing in cross country, swimming and track all four years.

“Although I was quite good at swimming and enjoyed it, cross country and track were always my main focus,” he said. “Distance running was where most of my natural talent was.”

He and his wife Karalynn met at Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois, where Meyer earned a bachelor’s degree in geology. “We moved to Nashville in July 2020, a few months after graduation. I still had athletic and career goals to reach, so I began contacting coaches from different schools with good track

and field programs. I ended up settling on Lipscomb University in Nashville, a small NCAA Division 1 Christian school with an impressive track program.”

At Lipscomb, Meyer pursued a master’s in organizational leadership. “This month I began an assistant coaching position at Cumberland University, where I will continue my graduate studies, pursuing a master’s degree in sports management. It’s my goal to become the head coach of a successful collegiate cross country and track program.”

All successful athletes know training is hard work. “During the past year, training at Lipscomb, I’ve been consistently running between 65 to 80 miles a week. This consisted of daily mileage runs, sometimes twice daily, different types of intense speed and distance workouts and weekly long runs.

I’ve not participated in any other sports other than running since high school.”

Staying with his current coach, Nick Pole, Meyer continues to train. “This time I will be more

Meyer has always loved running, whether it be for distance or speed. “I love to see where my limits are. I thought once I ran a sub-four-minute run, I would feel satisfied, but it only served to intensify the desire to keep pushing myself.”

In general, Meyer believes dedication is the key to being a successful athlete. “For a distance

runner, dedication needs to take on a slightly broader meaning.

The name of the game for distance runners is consistency over time, consistency over a long time. An athlete may see moderate success over a short period of hard work, but to truly excel and reach elite levels requires many years and thousands upon thousands of miles. The years and miles all begin to build on each other and allow the athlete to do things that seem impossible to most people.”

Living 18 years of his life in Rochester, Meyer will always consider it home. “Nashville has its perks, but I miss the neighborly, close-knit feel of Rochester and my friends there.”

Belcher to be honored by Indiana Bankers Association Richard E. Belcher, chairman and CEO of First Federal Savings Bank, Rochester, has been honored by the Indiana Bankers 5,&+$5' ( Association %(/&+(5 with the IBA Leaders in Banking Excellence award. The award, which celebrates exceptional leaders who have positively impacted Indiana banks and communities, was presented at a special ceremony at the bank June 9.

Next month, Belcher and six other Indiana bankers are to be inducted into the class of 2021 leaders at the IBA annual convention.

At the June 9 ceremony, representatives from the IBA and In-

diana banking community made presentations, and Belcher offered comments, reflecting on his career and community involvement.

Additionally, he was presented with an ebony plaque etched with his portrait and biography. An identical crystal plaque is on permanent display at the IBA offices in Indianapolis. In 2021, Belcher donated more than $3 million to multiple Fulton County nonprofits, culminating an estate plan created with his late wife, Suzanne. Belcher has been named Rochester Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen, Northern Indiana Financial Entrepreneur of the Year, and he and Mrs. Belcher together earned the Rochester Community Service award and the Purdue University President’s Council Pinnacle award.

In 2008, he spearheaded construction of the first LEED-certified bank branch in Indiana. A member of the IBA 40 Year Club, Belcher is a graduate of Purdue University and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

OBITUARIES Katrina Cantrell A Native Of Kentucky

Katrina Cantrell, 61, Rochester, passed away at 11:01 p.m. Friday, July 2, 2021, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 15, 1959, in Prestonsburg, Ky., the daughter of Luther and Beatrice (Powers) Shell.

She grew up in the Prestonsburg area before moving to Paintsville, Ky., in her early 20s. She had also lived in Florida for 20 years before moving to Rochester in .$75,1$ 2018. &$175(// Katrina had worked for Vista Products in Jacksonville, Fla., and had also worked for a laundromat and movie theater.

She loved to play bingo, tending to her flower gardens, helping and caring for others and enjoyed watching murder and mystery shows, especially “Criminal Minds,” “Law and Order” and “Forensic Files.”

Survivors include her son, Jamie L. (Madeana) Shell, Temple, Texas; grandchildren, Gabriel Shell, Temple, Texas, and Kaylee Shell, Temple, Texas; brothers, James (Connie) Shell, Romulus, Mich., Steven Shell, Macy, and Jack (Joyce) Shell, Betsy Layne, Ky.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Gladys Daniels, Virginia “Ginny” Freeman and Brenda Bradley; and brothers, Robert “Junebug” Shell and Gregory Shell.

Martha L. Schwenk Former Rochester Resident Martha “Marty” L. Schwenk, 87, Avon, longtime Rochester resident, passed away at 4 a.m. Saturday, July 3, 2021, at Hendricks Regional Health Hospital, Danville.

She was born April 9, 1934, in Huntington, the daughter of John F. and Blanche D. (Miller) Raub.

Marty graduated from Leiters Ford High School in 0$57+$ / 1951 and attended Purdue University. She married 6&+:(1.

Glenn Schwenk Sept. 6, 1952, in Rochester. Early in their marriage they lived in North Carolina while Glenn served with the U.S. Marine Corps. They moved back to northern Indiana and eventually settled back in Rochester. Glenn preceded her in death Aug. 24, 1987.

Marty had worked for Hart, Schaffner & Marx for 23 years. She then worked for the Diocese of Lafayette, serving as church secretary at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rochester, and at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Kokomo, for 10 years.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. An expert seamstress, she made clothes for her children, herself and others. Marty was known for her culinary skills as well, especially for her crescent rolls and chocolate fudge. While raising her children, she always had a large garden, canning and freezing most of what she grew. She made sure all of her children went to college and graduated, an accomplishment that made her very proud.

In later years, she enjoyed growing a variety of flowers, just like her mother. She had earned her master gardener and advanced master gardener degrees. In her mid-70s, she enjoyed taking ceramic classes. She was active with the March of Dimes organization and their annual walk and fundraiser. She was recognized as top money earner and 14 years of support.

Steven J. Johnson, 57, Rochester, passed away at 4:11 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2021, at his residence.

On March 28, 1964, Steven Jay Johnson was born in Glendale, Calif., to Eugene Ronald and Sharon Gist Johnson. Growing up he shared his childhood with a sister, Deanne, and two brothers, Howard and Rick.

In 1982, Steve graduated from Rochester High School.

67(9(1 - With a strong work ethic, Steve was employed by -2+1621 Lau Industries for 21 years. To relax, he enjoyed riding his Harley, hunting deer, squirrel and rabbits or fishing on the Tippecanoe River. Steve was an avid lover of fast muscle cars and lifted trucks.

Gifted with his hands, he was able to fix almost anything.

Left to cherish Steve’s memory are his fiancé, Amy Hiers of Rochester; son, Cory Johnson and wife Chizuru of Tokyo, Japan; mother and stepfather, Sharon and Jim Miller; two brothers, Howard Johnson and Rick Johnson; sister, Deanne Stults and husband Matt, all of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.

Theodore J. Hartstein Twin City Baptist Church Member

Theodore J. Hartstein, 90 years of age, passed away Friday, July 9, 2021.

He was born Jan. 13, 1931, in South Bend, to the late William F. and Pearl (Hoover) Hartstein. Theodore retired from Miles/Bayer Laboratories in 1993, where he worked making medical instruments. On June 16, 1951, in Mishawaka, he was united in mar- 7+(2'25( - riage to Joan Bentley, and they just celebrated 70 +$5767(,1 years together.

Theodore is survived by his wife, Joan, along with their children, Michael (Deborah) Hartstein, Corinth, Maine, Becky (Tom) Melton, Rochester, Barbara (Jim) Felten, Nashville, Tenn., John (Kami) Hartstein, Granger, and Beth (Kevin) Lockwood, Bremen; along with 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Dick Hartstein.

Theodore was preceded in death by his sisters, Cleo Boyer, Betty Nadolny, Clarice Young, Gayle Paksi and Wilma Miner; and brothers, Alfred Hartstein, Walter Hartstein, William Hartstein and Donald Hartstein.

Theodore was a faithful member of Twin City Baptist Church, Mishawaka, for over 50 years, where he served as a deacon, usher, Sunday school teacher and bus driver. He also attended Hillcrest Baptist Church until he and Joan moved to Rochester in 2014. He enjoyed camping and fishing and loved cheering on the football team at Penn High School. He was an avid cookie lover, but most of all, he was a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa and great-grandpa.

Services for Theodore will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 15, at Palmer Funeral Home-Bubb Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka. Friends may visit with the family beginning at 11 a.m. until the time of the services.

Burial will immediately follow at Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park.

Reggie Alan Ross Reggie Alan Ross, 69, rural Greencastle, died June 22, 2021, surrounded by his family.

He was born April 14, 1952. On Sept. 18, 1976, he married Beverly Hurst, who survives.

Letters to the editor Life Care Center addresses COVID-19 outbreak Dear Editor: At Life Care Center of Rochester, the health of our residents is our highest priority.

From the beginning of the pandemic, our associates have followed all guidelines from the Center for Disease Control and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. We continue to work closely with our local and state health departments, and many of our residents and staff have also been vaccinated against COVID. On July 2, during routine testing, we discovered a case of COVID-19 within the facility. Our incredible associates have worked so hard and continue to go above and beyond each day. We are thankful we have adequate staff to continue to provide quality care during this outbreak.

Here are the latest details from our facility: As of right now (Thursday, July 8), we have had nine residents test positive for COVID, as well as six associates. We are sad to report one of our COVID-positive residents has passed away, and we grieve with the family.

Our other positive residents are

being cared for in an isolated area to limit the chance of exposure for other residents, and our positive associates are home in isolation until cleared by the health department to return to work.

We are continuing our outbreak testing according to the guidance we have received from the local and state departments of health, testing residents for COVID daily and associates frequently as well.

Residents are monitored throughout the day and night, and associates are screened when they arrive and leave.

Our staff continue to follow all infection control protocols, including wearing appropriate protective personal equipment and practicing proper hand hygiene.

We stay in consistent communication with the loved ones of residents, and we welcome their questions at any time. Visitation remains restricted, but we are happy to coordinate video or phone calls.

We are thankful for the support and prayers of our community.

Fulton County Leadership Academy accepting applications Enrollment is now open and applications are being accepted for the Fulton County Leadership Academy, presented by the Purdue Extension Office and the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce.

Enrollment is on a first-come, firstserved basis.

Class sessions will be scheduled for a period of nine months, meeting Tuesday mornings, August-May from 8 a.m. to noon. Most are held in the Boilermaker Room at First Federal Savings Bank.

Because of the major time commitment involved in taking the class, all applicants must have approval of their employer prior to filing an application. There is no

deadline for the application. It is on a first come basis. Once the class size has reached 18, it will be full.

Mentone Town Council recently heard an update on working to address several unsafe houses in town.

At its Wednesday, July 7, meeting, the council heard an update from Town Attorney Andrew Grossnickle. The houses in question are at 405 N. Tucker St., 406 N. Tucker St. and 106 W. Maple St. Grossnickle spoke with the Kosciusko County Health Department’s Bill Baxter who has notified the homeowners of the buildings’ conditions and is working with them on getting the issues addressed.

With the issue being raised about the houses, though, the town has realized it needs a better process in place for remedying such violations. Grossnickle said he will work on a related ordinance.

Other Business The council also:

• Heard from Cal Jackson of First Baptist Church of Mentone.

Jackson has regularly visited the council for several months about getting paperwork done to unite two parcels of land at the church to put up a pole building. Grossnickle on behalf of the town was able to help resolve the issue. Jackson provided the council with a copy of the paperwork.

• Heard from Ben Thornburgh.

He’s purchased the property at 507 N. Broadway St. for two businesses.

He also wishes to put a house near the property. “However, the issue is the bank slammed the brakes on because the current zoning is industrial,” said Thornburgh. The council will have a public hearing at its next meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 4, on changing the zoning to residential.

• Heard from Town Clerk-Treasurer Nikki Norris the town will have the public hearing for the 2022 budget at its Sept. 1 meeting and vote on it at its Oct. 6 meeting.

Murder mystery party fundraiser for Times Theater Rochester is restoring its historic community movie house, converting it into an event center. To help them reach their goal, Mayhem 4 Hire has created a murder mystery with an “Elvis” theme, titled “Elvis is in the Building.”

The story line tracks the saga of Rod Hardcore, an Elvis impersonator who needs money and is unscrupulous about obtaining it.

“I grew up with Elvis,” said Pat Piper, owner, writer and director of Mayhem 4 Hire, “and was in love with him from the time I first heard him (like most of the female population). I still listen to his music and enjoy my huge scrapbook of magazine cutouts about him from the ‘50s and ‘60s. When I was asked to do this mystery, I chose an impersonator as my … well I can’t say ‘hero’ because he is actually a villain … instead of Elvis, himself, because you just don’t mess with ‘The King.’”

The setting for the mystery is Hardcore’s combination Blue Suede Shoes Tour and upcoming book promotion at the Elks Lodge 2120, located at 2506 Country Club Drive South, Rochester, from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, July 15. Check in is from 5:45-6:15 p.m.

Hardcore has been working as an Elvis Impersonator for a couple of years. He fancies himself a “Hunka, Hunka Burning Love,” but ticket sales show otherwise. He has written a soon to be published book about Elvis but “Suspicious Minds” doubt its credibility. And the contents have many people “All Shook Up.” After purchasing tickets online each attendant will be emailed party information, including names and bios for some, before arriving at the event. Everyone is given a clue or two to share.

Tickets are general admission and VIP. General admission tables seating up to eight people are also available for groups.

Included for the evening is the mystery and a three-course dinner, plus hors d’oeuvres, VIP tickets are “loaded with perks.”

Both can be purchased on www. mayhem4hire.com. There will be a cash bar. Tickets will not be sold at the door, and sales stop two days before the event due to time needed for communication with attendees before the show and caterer requirements. The program is for adults only.

Past participants say these events are well planned and everyone who participates love them.

The goal of restoring the Times as a venue for live music, movies and community events is a dream moving closer to reality. The revitalization project has been making great progress but there is still much to be done. The roof has been replaced and the building façade restored. A new stage support system has been constructed along with other needed interior improvements.

Currently, a handicap-accessible restroom is under construction as well as updates to the concession area. The hope is the Times will re-open fall of 2021 for small events, and then enter in to Phase two renovations, which include restoration of the historic marquee. The community’s generosity is what makes this possible and they could not do it without events like this.

Rochester resident earns certified financial planner designation Alderfer Bergen & Company in Warsaw announced Will Day, CFP, has been authorized by

the Financial Planner Board of Standards to use the certified financial planner and CFP

marks in accordance with CFP board certification and renewal requirements.

Local arts nonprofit receives grants Full Tilt Arts, a non-profit public arts organization, has been named the recipient of two grants that will help to fund upcoming projects in Fulton County.

A grant of $1,000 was awarded by the Fulton County REMC Operation Roundup Trust and a grant of $4,050 was given by the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County, an award made possible by the Community Foundation and the Indiana Arts Commission, which receives support from the state of Indiana and the National Endowment for the Arts. These funds will be applied to a planned mural project the non-profit will begin work on in the near future.

Full Tilt Arts was founded in

2020 with a mission to promote interest in the arts and to showcases local artists of all disciplines. The group’s initial effort was a mural located at 610 Main St., Rochester, where an unused lot and drab wall were transformed into a “jungle oasis” with the help of volunteers and donors.

The finished project was well received by the community and has enhanced the momentum and demand to bring more art to public spaces.

“What I really want to do is expose people to all kinds of art. By focusing on public art, this lets people get up close and interact with it and maybe gets someone inspired to create their own art in

their own medium,” said Christine Walsh, founder of Full Tilt. “And even if you don’t create art, the best way to foster appreciation for it is to make it available to everyone.”

Walsh, who also chairs the promotions committee for the Rochester Downtown Partnership, believes the mission of bringing public art to a predominantly rural area is a worthwhile cause.

“A work of art can brighten a person’s day, or even expand their mind if given a chance,” she said.

“And the benefits of community engagement and the potential for attracting more people might benefit local businesses in a positive way.”

OCRA Historic Renovation Grant Program now open The Historic Renovation Grant Program is now open for applications, according to Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch and the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs. The program is designed to preserve and rehabilitate historic properties to further incentivize downtown economic development across Indiana.

“Our state is home to many unique structures filled with history,” Crouch said. “Preserving these buildings through this grant will not only help local communities maintain their downtown buildings but also help keep

Indiana’s rich history alive.”

Applicants with an eligible historic commercial structure have the opportunity to apply for project funding between $5,000 and $100,000. The request must be no more than 50% of eligible project costs, with the local match being greater than or equal to 50% of the total eligible project costs.

“Indiana has countless beautiful, historic buildings that just need a bit of attention, but this can sometimes be costly,” said OCRA Executive Director Denny Spinner. “This grant will help communities invest in these

structures and, as a result, preserve our state’s rich history for years to come.”

Beginning this year, the program will be a competitive grant program rather than first-come, first-serve as it was in previous years. Eligible applicants include non-profits, individuals, partnerships, firms, associations, joint ventures, limited liability companies, corporation or non-profit affordable housing organization.

Free meals for all students during upcoming school year The United States Department of Agriculture has approved all schools to offer free lunch to all students regardless of income.

Those schools that offer breakfast will be able to offer free breakfast to all students, as well.

This means students will receive their meals for free this school year.

Some things to keep in mind: • Students must take the required components to make a reimbursable meal in order for it to be free. How students make a reimbursable meal will be posted/ displayed in the cafeteria or dur-

ing meal delivery. The cashier or other school staff will help students take a full reimbursable meal.

• If students purchase extras (such as a bottled drink) available in the serving line, a la carte (such as a singular milk or entree), snacks from vending machines, etc., the student will be charged for these items. If your student intends to purchase items other than a meal, make sure there are adequate funds on their account.

• Nothing needs to be sent to the school in order to have a student receive meals for free. Free

meals are automatically offered to all students regardless of income.

• Families who believe they would qualify for free and reduced meals normally should still submit a free meal application, as this can help with qualifying for other assistance programs for the family and student. Benefits from completing applications stretch far beyond the cafeteria and impact students in the classroom and at home.

What has happened to our library??

Has this question come to mind with other people in our community?

I have wondered why the shortened hours have continued even though all other businesses have their normal hours.

I have wondered why so few people are visiting the library these days. If questioned about this the answer is that many people don’t realize the library is open. That may not be the answer.

I wondered what on earth has happened to the Literacy Department. Before the current administration it was a bustling part of the library. There were Tutors helping with language needs, literacy needs, a yearly fundraiser with the spelling bowl that involved huge community participation, etc. A popular part of the library where help was given and basically run by volunteers. Now there are 2 paid employees appearing to have no direction or function. An occasional project will be seen but one that is limited to a very select few of interested participants. No help for GED programs, no language classes. If you have an interest in Greek Philosophy you might stop by . . .

I wonder where the smiling and welcoming faces are? They are gone.

Some of the best workers have left one by one and usually not on a happy note.

I wonder why the library never has job postings yet appear to have new faces fairly regularly. Many are friends or relatives which creates a nice tight environment in such a small setting as our library. Nepotism is usually frowned upon because of obvious problems that it invites. Of course if you work it so that you aren’t directly reporting to one another it appears not to be a problem.

That may be true for companies that have hundreds of employees, but not in a small building with relatively small staffs. The general public is shut out.

I wonder why the board members don’t question this. Far be it for the public to question things like this. The public has now been muzzled by the board members and the Library lawyer. Open board meetings will not allow questions by the public at their meetings any longer. They have their attorney sitting in at the meetings to protect what they are doing and saying. The reason stated is that the meetings are not a free for all. True enough, attorneys fees come at the expense of the tax payers. When did this happen? Before the current administration the public was welcome and made to feel that way and they were told they were free to speak or ask questions. No longer. The first thing that comes to mind is that they do not want the public asking or commenting on the inner goings on of the library. What are they trying to hide or protect? The tax payers of the community fund this library yet they have disdain for us and act as if we have no business being involved. When the tight group of nepotists are running the library they can all do and say what they want with the board and who will be the wiser. Are the board members there to just nod their heads yes and get on with the issues or are they to oversee how the library is being run, by actually doing the job they signed up for. I wonder if they even know what their duties are.

I wonder why we have such a lack luster group in there that are not bringing more activities and interest for patrons. Most of the activities now have been in place prior to the current administration. I remember when we had calligraphy classes, cooking classes, knitting classes, dance classes, special authors coming in, etc. Something for everyone. Most recently there was a painting class started with a large amount of people for attendance and it was cancelled abruptly. The director had mentioned that a painting class really was not something that was good in the library setting. REALLY?? Art has no place in the Library? I am reminded that poetry and Greek Philosophy apparently do.

I wonder why I didn’t even know who or what the Library Director looked like until she had been in her position for over 3 years and has apparently worked there for 13 years or so. Never before has this happened with previous Directors. This is a good environment for the management and staff to run amok. As with the board members, anything told to them is to be believed and all is well . . .

I wonder about many more things concerning OUR library but mostly I wonder what it will take to bring it back to a place that we can be proud of and not a place that brings a sneer to the face when it’s mentioned. For starters, they need to quit pitting themselves against the public and start running the Library in a manner that doesn’t bring so many questions. Questions that they don’t want to answer.

A new way to sign up as organ, tissue donors Donate Life Indiana and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources have partnered to give Hoosiers the opportunity to save lives as an organ and tissue donor when purchasing their hunting, fishing and trapping licenses. As of July 7, all online hunting and fishing license sales will include the option to register as a donor.

Governor Eric Holcomb authorized the new program in March 2020 by signing Senate Enrolled

Act 288 into law. SEA 288 adds the organ donation question to license purchases. Other ways to sign up as an organ and tissue donor include through the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, online at DonateLifeIndiana.org and through the iPhone Health app.

“This is a big step forward for donation in our state,” said Tim Clauson, board president of Donate Life Indiana. “One of our

The brethren (probably traveling evangelists and missionaries) had met Gaius and been entertained in his home. They reported Gaius was walking in the truth and faithfully trying to help the different Christian workers who came his way. Keep in mind there were no hotels in John’s day, only inns that were uncomfortable and often dangerous. Traveling evangelists depended on the saints for food and lodging. Gaius was the kind of Christian who loved to entertain the saints and “bring them forward” as they went from place to place.

Why did Gaius help the saints?

Because he loved them, for one thing, and because he wanted to share in their ministries and further the truth. A man might not be a preacher himself, but he can help others to preach.

Diotrephes also refused to help Christian brethren, and even went so far as to domineer the church and throw some people out. Third, notice Demetrius: (3 John 11-12). How refreshing to turn from Diotrephes to Demetrius. He was the kind of person others could follow (“mimic”). Demetrius had a good report from other people and from the Word itself. You could test his life by the Bible, and it passed the test.

Churches today need more members like Gaius and Demetrius, people who love the Bible, the church family, and lost souls.

July happenings at Akron Carnegie Public Library Here are some things going on at the Akron Carnegie Public Library during the month of July: • Tails and Tales 2021 summer reading program at library continues through July 23. Kids who are enrolled in the SRP can continue to earn points for prizes and participate in weekly activities at the library. It’s not too late to enroll and get started on a fun-filled July. This is open to those who have a valid Akron Public Library card and are between the ages of 3 and 18.

• Visit the library at their booth at the Fulton County 4-H Fair through July 16. They’ll have fun activities for the kids and a drawing for free prizes.

• Stop by the Akron Carnegie Public Library before heading to Pike Memorial Park between July 12-16 and pick up supplies (available to those enrolled in ACPL summer reading program) needed to enhance your StoryWalk experience. A silly, fun and engaging story awaits to be read as you use the walking path at the park. You and your family can do this activity at your leisure during park hours; however, to complete this experience, you need to stop by the library during their normal business hours to pick up a fun package before you begin. The StoryWalk boards will be up all week for you to enjoy.

• Ready! Set! Sail! Participants in the summer reading program Tails & Tales will be making boats out of recycled materials and then competing in the first Raingutter Regatta, July 20-21. The library is currently accepting plastic bottles with a semi flat side like dish soap, shampoo, suntan, lotion, etc., until July 12. They have multiple classes available dur-

ing the two days, but class size is limited so be sure to sign up soon.

• The Chain Gang meets at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, for those who enjoy crocheting, knitting, sewing or needlepoint. Bring your materials with you and work alongside others who enjoy this hobby.

• The last teen craft will be creating a wind spinner out of Popsicle sticks Thursday, July 22. This craft will take approximately one hour to make.

Teens enrolled in the SRP can join the library at either 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. for this craft.

Sign-up is required and class size is limited.

• This month’s Adult Crafty Corner program will be geared on learning painting techniques for creating a 5” x 5” Mandala canvas. Soothing to create and beautiful art to admire when completed. They will offer two programs starting at 4 or 6 p.m. Thursday, July 22. There is no cost to participate in this program. Signup is required and class size is limited, so call the library to reserve your spot today.

• July 23 – The library’s Tails & Tales summer reading program ends at the close of business Friday, July 23. Make sure all reading material is returned by the end of the day to ensure points are counted toward prizes.

• The library will be hosting an end-of-the-summer reading event to celebrate those who participated in its eight week summer reading program starting at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 27. This two hour event will be a come-and-go type of activity.
