The Fulton County 4-H Fair started a week early for 16 4-H’ers and a crowd of well-wishers who gathered in the fairground’s Everett Smith Building Wednesday, June 29, for an evening of model tractor pulling. For roughly 15 years, Fulton and Cass counties have been among the few counties in Indiana to hold the event, in which 1/16-scale model tractors are modified with a motor, gear box and rubber tires to pull sleds with weights of 118, 143 and

The winners of the pulling contest were: Mini, Graham Miller; Division 1, beginner (grades 3-5), Caleb Vigar; Division 2, intermediate (grades 6-8), Brayden Calvert; Division 3, advanced (grades 9-12), Caleb Gardner.

“It’s just like real pulling, but they’re smaller, which makes it fun,” said Gardner who has been competing in model tractor pulling for eight years.

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR Backus looks forward to coaching Rochester High School soccer %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Many Fulton County soccer families were excited to learn of the recent hiring of Eric Backus as the new head coach of the Rochester High School boys soccer team. For 10 years, Backus has been involved with youth soccer, both as a coach and a board member of the Fulton County Soccer Association. Now, he brings his work ethic to the high school level.

“He is amazing. We’re very happy he will be doing this,” enthused FCSA’s Michelle Maroney. This sentiment was echoed several times on the Facebook page as well.

As RHS Athletic Director Kevin Renie noted, Backus has been involved at all levels of boys and girls youth soccer. “He’s very familiar with the kids and the soccer community … it’s a really good fit for us.”

Backus grew up in Akron and graduated from Tippecanoe Valley High School where his older brother Scott later coached baseball. He and his wife, Ryann, later moved to the Rochester area, where she works.

Though Backus has loved sports his entire life, it was his oldest son, Layne, a recent RHS graduate, who introduced him to soccer.

“My oldest son fell in love with soccer when he was young … when he was in third grade I started coaching.”

Layne eventually sought a more

competitive soccer environment and joined a travel team in Argos, and Backus took note of the instruction he received. “Argos has been good at soccer for years,” he commented.

The Backus’ younger son, Spencer, and daughter, Charlie, also fell under the spell of “the beautiful game,” and both parents coached along the way. Eric was asked to join the FCSA board when he noticed a lack of referees, a problem that is particularly acute in the fall, the start of the season for high school players who ref in the spring.

“There’s always a need for both coaches and referees,” he said.

Backus is under no illusions about the learning curve he faces in his first season coaching high school, where the play demands greater “speed and physicality.”

However, his and assistant coach Travis Bonfiglio’s core philosophy remains unchanged.

“We’re big on effort. If you put in the hard work, the skill is going to come.” Backus judges his previous teams in terms of how much they improved over the course of the season. “I want my kids to be better at the end of the season … a lot of years it’s been that way.”

Backus noticed Bonfiglio’s coaching of a travel team and even suggested he apply for the head coach position at Rochester. “I really liked his mind set and philosophy.”

He recalled something his brother, Scott, once told him about coaching, “Always surround yourself with

coaches who are smarter than you.”

The coaches also agree on the importance of possession. “I don’t like kickball,” he said. “I like controlling the ball, making a pass to create something.” Such play requires effective movement without the ball as well, finding creases in the defense, switching fields and more creative use of the goal keeper. Backus looks forward to utilizing “fun, competitive drills” to convey these principles.

When not involved with sports or his job at Depuy in Warsaw, Backus also enjoys music. He plays drums and guitar every Sunday morning with the Mill Creek Missionary Church worship team.

But even at Mill Creek, Backus is within shouting distance of the Blacketor soccer fields. “We’re excited to get going with the players.” He faces a tough schedule including four ranked opponents.

Still, Backus stated, “If they give me effort, they’ll get better.”

heal us emotionally. He bore our grief and sorrow; he carried them away. His sacrifice gave us victory over bitterness, unforgiveness, fear, grief and depression. No regret for the past nor fear of the future has the power to diminish our lives.

Third, Jesus Christ died to heal us spiritually. God laid on him the sins of humankind, our wrong rolled onto Jesus so that we could be made right with God. Though our sins were as scarlet, Jesus washed them white as snow.

Jesus Christ bought our way into Heaven. Through him, we are set free.

Yes, Jesus Christ is God’s son.

Yes, he died for me. Yes, he died for you too. Anyone who sincerely says “yes” to Jesus Christ and “trusts” him as Lord and Savior will have their sins forgiven. The Lord will give us a home in Heaven.

Blueberry muffins Good neighbors: For the person seeking a blueberry muffin recipe. I stayed at this inn on business trips and these muffins were (are) so good. From what I heard, this inn closed awhile ago. I always tried to get the recipe and then they relented when Midwest Magazine did this article.

“These muffins have been regulars on the lunch menu at Chesaning Heritage House since it opened in Chesaning, Mich., in 1980. A brush of melted butter and a sprinkling of sugar finish off the tender treats. Best brunch muffins: 2 cups all-purpose flour, 2/3 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2 eggs, 1 cup milk, 1/3 cup butter or margarine, melted, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries, rinsed, drained and patted dry, melted butter or margarine, sugar or coarse sugar.

“Grease 18 2 1/2-inch muffin cups or line with paper bake cups. In a medium mixing bowl, stir together flour, the 2/3 cup sugar, baking powder, nutmeg and salt. Make a well in the center of dry ingredients; set aside. In another mixing bowl, beat eggs. Stir in milk, the 1/3 cup melted butter or margarine and vanilla. Add all at once to dry

ingredients. Stir just till moistened (batter should be lumpy). Fold in blueberries. Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups, filling each 3/4 full. Bake in a 375° oven for 20-25 minutes or till tops of muffins are golden. Place pan of muffins on wire rack.

Brush with additional melted butter or margarine; sprinkle with sugar. Remove from muffin cups.

Serve warm. Makes 18 muffins.”

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Catherin; granddaughter, Caitlin Heisler; sisters, Linda Kelly, Sandra Mitchell, and Reta Bahney.

Memorial visitation was held Tuesday, July 5, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron.

A private interment followed in the Akron Cemetery, Akron.

There is more to the 2022 Fulton County 4-H Fair than livestock exhibitions. In fact, even those who are not 4-H members have a variety of opportunities to participate and show off their talents. Open class exhibits are available to any Fulton County resident or member of the Fulton County Extension Homemakers Club. Exhibitors may enter more than one entry in each category.

Adults and children 8 years of age and under are eligible to submit exhibits.

Exhibit options this year include photography, quilting, needle arts, flowers, Christmas at the Fair, arts and crafts.

Food categories are a favorite and include baked goods as well as candy and food preservation.

Children’s categories are special categories for children 8 years of age and under. These categories include photography, cookies, single flower and crafts.

All exhibits in open class categories are to be checked in 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 9. Exhibits

must remain in place in the community building until they are released 9 a.m. Saturday, July 16.

Until then, fairgoers can view the wide variety of exhibits, including those which have earned their creators ribbons.

The cookie contest happens 5 p.m. Thursday, July 14, on Ladies Night at the fair. Judging for the open class baking contest will take place, sponsored by Fulton County Extension Homemakers Club. Cookie entries can be the same recipe as what’s submitted for open class or an entirely different recipe. This year’s special ingredient category is apricots.

Entry fee per plate of cookies is $2. Cookies must be entered into the contest between 4-5 p.m. and must be accompanied by their recipe.

Minnow Creek is one of two major drainage ditches that run through the City of Rochester.

Mill Creek, located to the east, and Minnow Creek in the west part of the city both drain north to the Tippecanoe River. The city street department, in collaboration with the county highway department, took on a project to upgrade and clean a substantial amount of Minnow Creek running through the city limits.

In the past two weeks, three new culverts (Sixth Street, Third Street and behind Riddle School) have been dug, cleaned and replaced with steel pipe 6½ feet in diameter: 75 feet of pipe for Fifth Street, 50 feet of pipe at Riddle School and 80 feet of pipe for the Third Street culvert. Lease Excavating Company was used for the digging. Seth White, the

county surveyor, shot the grades for the project to ensure proper drainage fall when installing the pipe. City and county employees under Duane Border and John Geyer worked together to make the installations. Most of the material was purchased with city funds. A combination of city and county equipment was used for the project.

RTC Communication was on site to assure protection of underground fiber cable. The city water department, waste treatment department, as well as NIPSCO, were utilized to process locates for their respective utilities.

Left to finish is fall cleaning of new debris, curb replacement, blacktop and guard rails installed at both sides of Sixth Street crossing. This project will benefit our community for some time. A thank you to all involved.

Fulton County Continued from page 1 successful pull (the smell of burning rubber permeated the room as competitors worked their tires to achieve the desired softness while staying within the event’s parameters), Gardner noted front-end weight — so the tractor stays down — and gearing as other important factors. Gearing is unrestricted in the advanced class.

“We treat it just like a regular tractor pull,” said Skeeter Daughtery, who oversaw the event. Daugherty discovered model tractor pulling 15 years ago at the Indiana State Fair when he happened on a demonstration. Within a few months the project was up and running in Fulton County with the help of Phillip Padgett in Clinton County.

“It’s gotten pretty big,” he observed, as evidenced by the packed room.

“It’s an inexpensive project … it takes about six hours to build one,” said Daugherty, whose daughter, Lauren Adey, and Brandon Overmyer were among the first competitors. Both were on hand as judges,

along with Mike Doran, who drills the holes for mounting the electric engine. The sled used for the pulls was built by Craig Welding and Manufacturing.

“The kids buy a 16-scale tractor like they use in the sandbox, and they strip it down to nothing. All they need to supply is the tractor and the hubs.” The kits are supplied by 4-H. While rules state methane/nitrofuel may be used at intermediate and advanced levels, the overwhelming smoke and other dangers led Daugherty and others organizers to stick with electricity.

Recently, kits have been unavailable due to COVID, so most of the tractors used this year are holdovers from previous competitions.

“We want everybody to be able to pull,” said Daugherty.

Colton Baker, who competed in the beginner division, echoed the sentiment of many of the competitors when asked what they enjoy about model tractor pulling. “I like tractors and how they work.”

Full line up for Livestock Shows Fulton County 4-H Fair has a full slate of livestock competitions, culminating with an auction Friday, July 15.

The calendar includes multiple days of check in times for various types of livestock: Saturday, July 9 — 7-10 p.m., swine Sunday, July 10 — 11 a.m to 1:30 p.m., beef, feeder calf, dairy — Noon to 2 p.m., poultry — 2-4 p.m., sheep — 4-5 p.m., goats — 4-6 p.m., rabbits For the next several days, livestock shows will take place at Hudkins Arena or in the animal

respective barns: — Monday, July 11, poultry at 9 a.m., dairy at 9:30 a.m. and sheep at 12:30 p.m.

— Tuesday, July 12, rabbits at 8 a.m. and beef at 1 p.m.

— Wednesday, July 13, swine at 8 a.m.

— Thursday, July 15, goats at 8:30 a.m.

The auction will take place at 5 p.m. Friday, July 15, at the Hudkins Arena. The sale order will be poultry, milk, beef, rabbits, sheep, goats and swine.

Queen pageant July 9

The crowning of Little Miss, Teen Miss, Junior Miss and Miss Fulton County 2022 will take place Saturday, July 9, at Rochester Community High School. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. with the pageant starting at 4 p.m.

There are six girls, between the ages of 16-22, vying for the title of “Miss Fulton County Queen.”

The Teen Miss competition, those between the ages of 1315, will have five girls vying for the title. There will be 10 girls between the ages of 1012 vying for the Junior Miss title and 15 girls between the ages of 6-9 vying for the title of Little Miss.

Contestants for the Miss Fulton County title are: Jessa Whilhelm, 20, daughter of Jared and Jennifer Wilhelm, is a 2020 graduate of North Miami High School and graduate of Ivy Tech Community College with an associate of applied science in agriculture and major in ag business management.

Madison Heinzman, 17, daughter of Stephen and Staci Heinzmann, will be a senior at Rochester High School. She will intern with an orthopedic surgeon at Woodlawn Hospital and following graduation she plans to pursue a career in orthopedics.

Kimberly Batten, 19, daughter of Greg and Kris Batten, is a 2021 graduate of Rochester High School and continued her education at IUPUI where she studies political science and is working toward her goal of a career as an attorney.

Kallie Watson, 17, daughter of Jon and Kathy Watson, will be a senior at Rochester High School. She plans to attend Purdue University to pursue an education in interior design and real estate.

Kaydence Shepherd, 18, daughter of Josh and Stephanie Shepherd, is a graduate of Tippecanoe Valley High School and will be attending Ball State to major in music education.

Erika Yard, 18, daughter of Staci Yard, is a 2022 graduate of Manchester Junior/Senior High School. She will be attending Ivy Tech and get a de-

gree in liberal arts.

leader since sixth grade. She also has many family members involved such as cousins and Jeannie Rock, who is an adult advisor. As 4-H Junior Leader President, Emily and Vice President Brook Nelson are working hard to improve not only 4-H, but the community as a whole through community service, which currently includes helping clean up the county fairgrounds in preparation for the 4-H fair. They are also involved with the FFA auction at Rochester Sale Barn and the annual Easter egg hunt.

Emily explained that because Fulton County does not have a Purdue extension agent, it falls on junior leaders like herself to create 4-H camps, where younger 4-Hers are exposed to different projects.

Vigar observed many younger kids spend so much time on their phones they have difficulty socializing and speaking in public. She and other leaders encourage these sorts of inter-

ers president, she hopes to help pass on the benefits of her own experience to younger kids just starting their own 4-H journey.

Emily comes from a family long involved with 4-H and agriculture in general. She grew up on a farm outside Fulton, and her grandparents, Jeannie and Rick Rock, raised Holstein dairy cattle, as did her mother, Tammy Vigar. In fact, Emily’s first experiences showing cattle were likely around the age of 16 months, being carried by her mother. “I’ve been doing this as long as I can remember.”

Along with dairy cattle, Vigar also raises and shows beef cattle, dairy goats and sheep, which her father also showed as a 4-H’er. On top of all this, Emily plays basketball with the Lady Zebras. How does she do it all?

“It’s something I love, so I find the time … Last night I was in the barn until 10 p.m.,” she related.

“It’s a fun time to get to know kids growing up in 4-H,” she said. “We try to get them a little out of their comfort zone, so they can have the best experience … like I did growing up in 4-H.” One of Vigar’s personal 4-H highlights was born out of adversity. The 2020 Fulton County 4-H Fair was a difficult one due to COVID. Many could not even attend. For Emily, however, the recent death of her Grandpa Vigar was predominant in her mind. Furthermore, Emily was showing a beef heifer she

called “Peanut.” She was the first in her family to show beef cattle, and she wanted to make her grandpa proud. When she placed fifth overall and earned champion county born and bred, it was a surprise. “I didn’t think I would show.”

Vigar has high hopes for the Junior Leaders. Currently, the program is “small,” she noted.

“I want to bring more kids in … When I leave here I want to leave a good legacy behind.”

As for herself, she said, “I hope to continue growing my livestock and succeed at both the county fair and state levels.

I’m willing to put in the hard work to be successful.”

The 2022 Fulton County 4-H Fair once again returns to the fairgrounds July 7-16. The event is a celebration of all things 4-H, featuring the fruits of county residents’ hard work and creativity. And along with the myriad livestock and horse shows, pageants and exhibits, this year’s fair brings a wide variety of entertainment, including live music, competitive events such as lawn mower races and tractor pulls and much more.

Featured activities through the week include the Fulton County Fair Queen Contest, 4 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at Rochester High School. Also at 4 p.m., July 9, will be lawn mower races in the Clauson Amphitheater.

A vesper service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 10, at Jud Hudkins Arena. The first of two tractor pulls kicks off at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, in Clauson Amphitheater, followed by the Antique Tractor Pull at 5 p.m.

Friday, July 15. And the perennial favorite, Demolition Derby, will get down and dirty at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 16, in Clauson Amphitheater.

Lane Coby, son of Alisha and Jeff Coby, is a member of Aubbee Gamblers. “4-H has provided me with many life skills,” he said. Coby’s favorite project is models and his favorite 4-H activity is making the models.

McKenzie Craft, daughter of Veronica Coby and Paul Craft, is a member of Burton Busy Bees. Her favorite project is pigs. Craft enjoys the whole fair week experience.

When asked what 4-H has meant to her she said, “Making friends, learning about the animals I’ve shown and a lot of hard work and responsibility.”

Kaillie Woods, daughter of Kathleen J. Shriver and Chad B. Zeigler, is a member of Might Mutts and Horse and Pony. Her favorite project is Might Mutts. “4-H has been an experience with it’s ups and downs, but for the most part the memories have been good,” Woods said.

Erika Yard, daughter of Staci Yard, is a member of Burton Busy Bees. “It has been an honor to be in 4-H for the last six years,” she said. “It has taught me responsibility and hard work which are great skills to have. I have enjoyed every minute and will miss it dearly.”

Fulton County 4-H’ers reach 10-year mark The following local students have been active in 4-H for 10 years: Reagan Becker, daughter of Jeff and Lisa Becker, is a member of Reiter Busy Workers. Her favorite projects are goats and photography. “Raising goats in 4-H not only taught me about livestock, but gave me confidence and skills in public speaking and problem solving,” she said. “4-H has shaped my childhood and will continue to influence me in the future. Taking my goats to camps for kids with disabilities helped me realize my interest in assistive technology. 4-H led me to my future career, as I plan to earn a de-

gree in design engineering and develop assistive technology for people with disabilities.” Her favorite activities are goat committee, farmer Olympics and pig wrestling.

nities I would otherwise not have.

Form competing at the county level, to being a State Fair 4-H exhibit hall worker, I have learned so much and met so many great people.” He favorite projects are horse and pony, swine and photography.

Ethan Lawson, son of Allyson and Eddie Lawson, is a member of Reiter Busy Workers. His favorite projects are sheep and cattle. “4-H has meant a lot to me. It has helped me grow in every aspect of my life,” he said. “I will always be grateful for the lasting affect 4-H has and will have on me.” His favorite activity is pig wrestling.

Mariah Leininger, daughter of Greg and Megihann Leininger, is a member of Henry Hardy Farmers. She said, “I like to share what I learn. I have learned to work hard and to accomplish my goals. I have also enjoyed time with my family and close friends. I am thankful for their help and support.” Her favorite projects are sheep and floral, and her favorite 4-H activities are working with her sheep and seeing what she can accomplish.

Overmyer is proud of winning a banner that her brother never was able to win throughout her years in 4-H. Making friends has been her favorite activity during 4-H. Adrian Schouten, son of Andrew and Emily Schouten, is a member of Aubbee Gamblers. “4-H has given me the opportunity to make friends and learn new skills,” Schouten said. “I learned new skills and gained new knowledge from the different 4-H projects I have taken on.” His favorite projects include poultry, geology and foods. He enjoys the many activities throughout the fair week.

His favorite project is Beef, and his favorite 4-H activities are pig wrestling and the rodeo. “4-H has helped me connect with friends in the farming community,” Shriver said. “Showing animals has taught me patience and the value of hard work.”

%\ $/,621 +$1'< 6WDII :ULWHU A vesper service will be held at the Fulton County Fair and will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 10, in the Hudkins Show Arena; however, it might be a little different than what patrons are used to.

“We are going to change things up a bit for this year’s vesper service,” stated Brian Sewell, pastor of Whippoorwill Church in Rochester. Sewell has been organizing the service for 28 years.

The service will feature a special musical guest; “We have a unique opportunity to have Kate Karter share in music along with her dad, Pastor Thad Stewart. Kate is a rising star in country music and the blues and has released her first single. She currently lives in Florida and has been on the road doing concerts throughout the southern United States. Kate opened for Grammy Award Winner Linda Davis. She regularly sings at the Orange Blossom Opry in Wiersdale, Fla.,” explained Sewell.

Karter is a singer and songwriter that was born and raised in Rochester. Stewart is also a seasoned local musician as well as the pastor of Omega Church in Akron.

Sewell continues, “Kate will be singing gospel music, along with her dad. There will be opportunities to join in singing with them in a few of the songs.”

Following the musical concert, Pastor Rod Ruber of Reiverview Community Church will provide a message titled “Shame & Ashamed.” Service will last approximately

an hour. “The community vesper service is always an encouraging time as churches from the area come together and honor our Lord and Savior,” Sewell shared.

Sewell anticipates to have approximately 175 parishioners in attendance of the vesper services. The attendance varies on the weather and temperatures outside. “We would love the community to join us for this inspirational time of music and learning from God’s word together,” Sewell added.

At the end of the vesper service, there will be a love offering for the transient ministry in Fulton County for United Ministries Outreach. Guests of the service are also encouraged to bring a bulletin from church or a canned good to show the park attendants to enjoy free parking at the fair the evening of the vesper service.

Fulton County Fair features wide variety of entertainment Fulton County 4-H Fair will include a variety of entertainment opportunities throughout the week of July 9-16 at the Fulton County Fairgrounds, 1009 W. Third St., Rochester.

A recent addition to this year’s fair will be lawn mower races 4 p.m. Saturday, July 9, in Clauson Amphitheater. Admission is $5. Organizer Nick Richter has been involved with the races since he was a little kid. “This is an opportunity to bring to the fair something a little different we haven’t seen.”

There will be standard and modified classes, with the latter including four-wheeler or motorcycle engines with “something resembling a lawn mower” for the chassis. These can reach speeds over 40 mph; however a limit will be set for safety. Timed laps will be run to determine limits. The dirt track shape is yet to be determined; however, Richter said it will likely not be a standard oval. “We’ve had a lot of early interest,” said Richter. Ages will be 13-14 years of age and up. Sweetcakes Entertainment will be on hand from 5-9 p.m.

Monday, July 11 and Tuesday, July 12, in the Everett Smith Building. Sweetcakes offers face painting, caricature drawing and elaborate balloon animals for the entire family.

Silly Safari will be at the Everett Smith Building at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 13. Silly Safari provides live animal conservation education, featuring all manner of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and insects, and are a big hit with kids, as was recently shown at a well-attended event at Rochester Public Library recently.

Junior Achievement grant for Biz Town During the 2021-2022 school year schools in Wabash, Miami and Fulton Counties were all able to be a part of the Junior Achievement Biz Town opportunity. The students traveled to Fort Wayne for a day of fun and learning. Many students went home with the knowledge of knowing how hard their parents work each day and how their paychecks work after you earn them.

The Duke Energy Foundation was able to donate $2,500 toward these events and helped to make it possible for these students to learn what it was like to be a part of a real city, hold a job, pay bills and have a little responsibility. Many kids are very tired by the time they go home, but tend to appreciate their parents just a little bit more.

Fulton County Retired Teachers volunteer hours The Fulton County Retired Teachers met Thursday, June 23, at the Family Dining Restaurant on SR 25 for their meeting introducing the Top Volunteers.

Special guest was Mayor Denton, who received a replica check in the amount of $47,438.25 or the volunteer hour amount of $28.54 per hour.

President Stephenia Barkman called the meeting to order by having everyone say the Pledge to the Flag, followed by Judy Climie saying grace before the meal.

While ordering, they were asked to say something about their fa-

thers; what he did for a living, some special traits he was known for and his name. Some special memories were remembered.

Barkman, Ilene Howard and Kay Horn attended the 57th Representative Assembly at the Primo Banquet Center in Indianapolis Wednesday, June 8. New Area Directors were installed by outgoing Executive Director Barry Conrad, Wabash. Fall workshops will be happening in the fall in Kokomo.

Mayor Denton thanked the teachers for their dedication to Fulton County and says he will hang the check on the “Wall of Pride” in his office. The Mayor gave further remarks about how busy downtown is and the Minnow Creek project with new tiles going into place and how they should be in place by Fair time.

He also addressed the question about a street light out on Rochester Boulevard and how dark it

is and people are leaving their porch lights on.

Horn gave the Secretary’s report and Treasurer’s report of $281.64. $90 came in as three dues, scholarship, A Hand Up and The Foundation. This leaves a balance of $371.64.

Horn closed with a thought about not keeping a chip on your shoulder.
