Akron native returns to create ‘Reese Lake’ %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU They say there is no place like home, and for Orville and Julie Reese of Akron, that is certainly true. After living and working in Warsaw for decades — Orville at Depuy for 26 years and Julie at Zimmer Biomet for 35 — the couple retired and in 2015 purchased 11.9 acres on CR 225N outside Akron, near where Orville grew up. They have since invested both money and sweat equity into transforming the previously untamed acreage into a bucolic getaway complete with a large, stocked, spring-fed pond, beach and two fully-functioning cabins, all of which they share with friends, family and others who adhere to a simple set of rules, the most important being “no lying and stealing.” Other rules include, “clean up your mess and call ahead.” “It’s real simple,” Orville observed, “and we’ve never had an issue.” (Just in case, he has also invested in substantial liability insurance.) “Reese Lake” has also been the site of nine baptisms, which took

place during an Athens Community Church cookout. For a time, the Reeses also hosted a regular Wednesday young adult Bible study, as well as youth revivals and there have also been two marriages. “God owns this property,” Orville emphasized, “and we do the best we can to share it with other people.” The Reeses good fortune is also the result of years of hard work, which did not end with the purchase of the property. It had been uninhabited for nearly four years, and their current home and “lake” were literally carved out of the landscape. Four years ago, Kirk Ingram of Winamac was hired to dig out the existing pond. He told Orville, “You’ll hate me before this is done.” Nevertheless, Reese hired on to help do work few can put up with for long. “We became good friends over this.” Over the course of three months the two-acre pond was drained and then dug down to 14 feet. Orville described the slimy mixture of grass, mud and weeds as “snot” and around 150 truck loads of it were hauled away. At one point, the

pile was so high the Reeses could not see the road from their house. Meanwhile, Orville worked in the “snot,” moving mats used to keep the cranes stabilized. Everyday, he remembered, cars would park along the road and watch. Eventually, a creek developed as the springs began to fill the cavity. Then spring rains did the rest. “It filled right away.”

The pond is stocked with largemouth bass and Georgia Giant Bluegill, which grow to 4-5 pounds. However, fishing is generally restricted to senior citizens due to the fact the bluegills don’t survive catch-and-release due to their fighting spirit. Forty-four tons of sand were brought in for the lake, which has Continued on page 3
