Akron keeps the community safe with a new connecting trail %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 )HDWXUH :ULWHU The Town of Akron is home to a new trail running along Rural Street and connecting Akron Elementary School to Pike Memorial Park. Rural Street is a heavily traveled road lacking a sidewalk and connects SR 14 to SR 19. “There are lots of kids that walk to school that way and it is so congested with buses and traffic,” stated Rebecca Hartzler, town clerk-treasurer. Every school year the elementary does a safety exercise where the students evacuate the building and walk to the neighboring Akron Community Center. Even though it’s a short walk, the route is along Rural Street and the large group of children and teachers must walk in the street with the accompanying fire trucks and emergency personnel who participate in the drill. “We realized during the process that we really needed a sidewalk or a trail extension there. That’s when it really came to light that it was a need — not just a luxury, but a necessity,” said Lori TildenGeiger, who does grant writing and public relations for the Tippecanoe

With the help of Hartzler, Tilden-Geiger, the Fulton County Community Foundation, K21 Health Foundation and the stamp of approval from Akron Town Board President Jim Saner, the trail became a reality.

A $30,000 grant was obtained from Fulton County Community Foundation with a $15,000 required match. Tilden-Geiger helped write the grant for the remaining $15,000 awarded through K21 Health Foundation. Hartzler explained, “Even though Akron is not in Kosciusko County, Akron school corporation is serving the needs of students who will be part of the Kosciusko school system and kids and other people from the county utilize our

parks.” The two grants completely funded the project. The construction phase began, and Gaunt & Son Asphalt finished the addition the first week of June. “We’re so lucky — our two anchor towns, Akron and Mentone, are so supportive of whatever we need. The partnership, collaboration and support are outstanding,” said Tilden-Geiger. “People really enjoy seeing the town and the Continued on page 2
