Riddle’s Optimist Bunch %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Throughout the 2021-22 school year, George M. Riddle Elementary School’s Junior Optimist Club — also known as the Barkman Optimist Bunch — was engaged in several activities designed to benefit not only the school, but also the wider Rochester area.

The club’s membership exceeded 50 students this year, all of whom were in the third and fourth grade. The name is in honor of Tim Barkman, a former Riddle principal and Rochester Optimist.

On May 11, 26 BOB members volunteered at Grace United Methodist Church’s Wednesday free meal outreach ministry, which serves over 150 people each week from 5:30-7 p.m. “With a significant percentage of the Rochester Community School students on the free or reduced lunch program, the idea of a Grace free meal outreach ministry was conceived,” reads the church’s website. On May 11, BOB members helped prepare the dessert, main course, side dishes and to go boxes.

It was the club’s first time working at the free meal, said Mona Zeyen, third grade teacher and club leader. “Some were there until 7 p.m.”

“It made me feel good helping people in the community,” said Lindy Armstrong, a fourth-grader and co-president along with Katelyn Conliff and Charlie Backus.

“Having the opportunity was the best part,” said Conliff, who recalled volunteering at the meal one other time with her grandmother.

Backus noted the volunteer experience was not only a good way to learn about the weekly event, but also to “spread it around the community.”

Armstrong, Conliff and Backus are among several students who will go on to fifth grade at Rochester Middle School next year, where, according to Zeyen, the Junior Optimist Club will be reestablished after a hiatus resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. But Continued on page 3

Luce ready to take Valley basketball to the next level %\ .(,7+ .1(33 6WDII :ULWHU Joe Luce might have left the bench for a few years, but he never left the gym.

Last month, the veteran basketball coach agreed to pick up the whistle again following a threeyear stint as an administrator with the Whitko Career Academy in Larwill, a job that didn’t include leading young men onto the hardwood.

But that certainly didn’t mean Luce wasn’t in the gym. During that hiatus, he had the opportunity to watch his son, Tommy Luce, play basketball at Purdue University.

He also kept up with the game at area high schools and colleges, never letting his passion for the game diminish.

“I’m a professional high school basketball coach,” said Luce.

“That’s what I’ve done for my ca-

reer. This is a great opportunity at Tippecanoe Valley and I’m grateful for the support I’ve received from my family.”

Luce grew up in Selma, a rural community in east central Indiana.

As a student athlete at Wapahani High School, he excelled on the basketball court and the baseball diamond under Hall of Famers Paul Keller and Brian Dudley, respectively. He said Wapahani is a similar community to Tippecanoe Valley, which he believes will help him to easily transition into his new school.

His career began as the freshman coach at Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, where he was later promoted to the junior varsity bench. He eventually was named varsity coach at Fountain Central High School in Veedersburg, and later to Benton Central High School, located northwest of Lafayette, which Luce noted

is close in size and has a similarly large corporation footprint as Tippecanoe Valley. His success in turning around the Benton Central basketball program earned him recognition as an Indiana District Coach of the Year.

Eventually, he followed his whistle to Marion High School, where he led another rebuild and “won a lot of games.” He then tried his hand at college coaching as an assistant at Ball State University but found that his heart was in the high school gymnasium, not the college arena. Luce soon returned to the prep game, accepting the job at Richmond High School where he led the Red Devils to their first semistate since Indiana transitioned to class basketball in 1997.

Following his success at Richmond, Luce eventually moved to Jeffersonville High School, where he coached Tommy during his 2015-16 senior season. After the 2019 season, he hung up his whistle to take the job at Whitko, seemingly leaving behind a storied career as a basketball coach in nearly every corner of the Hoosier state.

As fate would have it, however, Luce struck up a friendship with Blaine Conley, the superintendent of the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation. When the job on the Viking bench became available this spring, Conley reached out to Luce, who was eventually offered the job.

Luce understands he has big shoes to fill, following the legacy of Bill and Chad Patrick. He added he has great respect for the fatherson duo, whose family name has become synonymous with Valley basketball.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity to coach at Tippecanoe Valley,” he said. “I’m looking forward to building upon what has been happening with Tippecanoe Valley basketball. I want to continue moving the program forward and raising the expectations by engaging the players and earning their trust.”

He and his wife, Karrie, currently live in Roanoke. She is currently employed as a nursing assistant at Whitko High School.

They are keeping an eye on the local housing market and are hoping to move closer to Tippecanoe Valley in the coming months. Between them they share seven children and three grandchildren.

FCPL’s ‘Poet Tree’ available June 1 %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU The second edition of “Poet Tree,” a free collection of roughly 30 poems by area writers compiled by Fulton County Public Library Literacy Director Tim Roe, will be available starting June 1 at a variety of locations.

“Poetry is the ability to be a child again. To see with eyes of wonder, awe,” said Roe. The collection gives readers a “glimpse of grandparents, teens, everybody … It’s a way to bring the community together, to show the different ways people look at life.”

Roe, who has also produced a local short story collection, “Stories,” expressed his belief every-

body has a story to tell. “With the shorter stories and poetry, everybody can read them.” In many cases, he added, they may know the writers, some of whom have been teachers or other public figures.

Roe requested submissions in April, National Poetry Month, and then began compiling the book in May, using Microsoft Publisher. The poems are accompanied by graphic illustrations in a variety of mediums.

Roughly 500 copies of “Poet Tree” will be available at several locations in addition to Fulton County Public Libraries, including: Flirt Boutique, Webb’s Family Pharmacy, Native Nook and Brooch Boutique.

BOB fundraising efforts this year included an in-school lemonade stand, earning over $700 for a book vending machine. The goal is to fully fund the books as well, which students can purchase with tokens earned during the school year.

The students also raised funds by taking part in the Optimist Club of Rochester’s annual pumpkin patch event. In September 2021, BOB members helped pick the pumpkins and then helped out at the stand at 803 E. Ninth

St., Rochester.

In addition to the vending machine, the club also raised money for the new City Park splash pad and the One School One Book reading initiative.

Many of BOB’s activities this year also reflected the Optimist creed, which exhorts members to “talk health, happiness and prosperity to everyone you meet.” In February, members composed valentine cards and made “cookie bouquets” for residents at Life Care Center of Rochester.

On another occasion, members planted notes with sayings such as “keep smiling” and “be positive”

in books at the Riddle library. The club also expressed its appreciation for Riddle’s instructional assistants, presenting them with cards, snacks and candles.

During Mental Health Awareness Month in April, the club assisted The Ladybug Foundation and Fulton County HOPE, distributing pages for a countywide coloring contest featuring sayings such as “Be Kind to Your Mind” and “Choose Kindness.”

Armstrong explained why she felt positivity was important. “It helps people to be stronger and do new things they thought they could never do.”

Ivy Tech honors local woman as top dual credit faculty member Ivy Tech Community College has honored Valerie Hoover of Rochester Community High School as one of 19 individuals across the state selected to receive the inaugural Excellence in Dual Credit Instruction President’s Awards, the highest honor for Ivy Tech dual credit faculty.

The College honored each one of the winners for their excellence in instruction and their positive impact on the dual credit students they served during the 2021-22 academic year. A selection committee made up of Ivy Tech faculty, program chairs and college administration selected the honorees based on nominations from various stakeholders including

dual credit students, secondary and post-secondary administrators and Ivy Tech K-14 team members.

“Dual credit faculty serve an important role by introducing our high school students to college material and providing them with an opportunity to see that they can do college-level work,” said Ivy Tech President Sue Ellspermann. “Without a dual credit experience, many students would never take the next step into higher education.”

“Our dual credit faculty work tirelessly to ensure high quality, college-aligned content to students for little to no cost, saving families thousands of dollars,” said Dr. Re-

becca Rahschulte, vice president of K-14 initiatives and statewide partnerships, “We are honored to be able to recognize dual credit instructors throughout the state through this award.”

The Excellence in Dual Credit Instruction President’s Award is modeled after the college’s President’s Award to recognize college faculty and adjunct faculty members from Ivy Tech locations throughout the state.

The college will honor all the winners at a ceremony on June 8 in Indianapolis. The evening will conclude with the announcement of the 2022 statewide award recipient.

Nominations accepted for Golden Hoosier Award Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, in collaboration with the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Division of Aging, has announced nominations are now being accepted for the 2022 Golden Hoosier Award.

This is the 15th year for the program.

“Our state is filled with generous Hoosiers who are constantly giving back to their neighborhoods and communities,” Crouch said. “I am excited to once again partner with FSSA and AARP Indiana to honor those who are going above and beyond to better their town and our

state. The best thing about Indiana are her people, men and women who find ways to leave Indiana in a better place for their children and future generations.”

Crouch said the award began in 2008 and annually honors older Hoosiers for their lifetime of service and commitment to their communities.

To be eligible for the Golden Hoosier Award, the nominee must currently be an Indiana resident, aged 65 or older, and have been a volunteer in the community for

the past three years.

The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, June 10.

Cheerleaders compete at State Competition %\ $/,621 +$1'< 6WDII :ULWHU Rochester Reckless Champion Force Athletics, a recreational cheerleading program that practices just northwest of Rochester, has had a busy spring season preparing for their State Competition, and all their hard work has certainly paid off.

Four different teams represent Rochester Reckless. Division one team is made up of athletes ranging from 4 to 6 years old. Division two has athletes from age 6 to 9; division three has athletes from age 8 to11. Division four is a try out team, and athletes range from 9 to 18.

All four teams competed and placed within the top five at the Champion Force Athletics Spring 2022 Indiana State Competition.

Rochester Reckless’s Assistant Coach, James Handy, says he is proud of the progress the teams have made.

“At the end of the season, seeing them go from where they started and seeing the growth they’ve had, and then seeing it all pay off in the end because they were able to reach that goal, that’s something really special,” Handy said. “Some of our athletes have never cheered before, so just seeing them grow within this sport is even more special,” Handy added.

The majority of the division one and two athletes are based in Fulton County; however, many of the older athletes are from surrounding communities, some traveling almost an hour to participate on the team.

“They have only an hour practice once a week, for 16 weeks, to prepare for State. That isn’t a lot of time compared to other programs where they have about nine months of multiple practices a week for hours to prepare for a big competition,” Handy explains. “It is awesome to see just want these kids can do in such a short amount of time.”

Division three and four have also earned bids to compete at the Champion Force Athletics Nationals in July. Their preparation begin Monday, June 6; just 2 weeks after their regular spring season ended with State Competition.

Rochester Reckless offers cheerleading classes in addition to beginner tumbling classes. Their open registration for the fall season will begin in August. You can find them on Facebook by searching Rochester Reckless Champion Force.

Splash Pad organizers honored by Fulton Chamber The Fulton County Chamber of Commerce staff and board of directors presented the Shining Star Award to Andi Lee and Wendy Zent of the Wilson Family May 26. The Shining Star Award is presented to individuals or businesses who have gone above and beyond to be a Shining Star in and for the community. Andi and Wendy were nominated for and received this award upon the completion and opening of a splash pad located within Rochester City Park.

Sisters Andi and Wendy recognized a need in Rochester for more kid-friendly activities, so they researched together what would be needed to open a splash pad. They developed plans, wrote and distributed donation letters, pursued grant opportunities and worked with the City of Rochester and many local businesses to execute their plans. When asked what made them decide to pursue a splash pad in Rochester, Zent joked, “I was tired of driving to Argos with my grandkids all summer.” Fulton Economic Development Corporation served as the fundraising mechanism for the project. “One of our most important initiatives is quality of life for Fulton County residents.

We are happy to be a part of this project that improves Rochester’s quality of life,” says FEDCO Director Tiffany Futrell.

Roughly 40 Riddle Elementary School children got a preview of the Splash Pad at there end-ofthe-year water party on May 24.

Zent, who was a Riddle secretary for 25 years, reported, “To hear the kids screaming and hollering was so much fun.” Zent also noted all 40 children were comfortably accommodated with room for more.

Lake Manitou preps for opening day The Lake Manitou Association has been working diligently to prepare the lake for another great season. They announced that the lake is set to open at noon Saturday, June 11, with the Opening of the Lake parade.

This announcement, along with other information, was sent out in the spring edition of the Manitou Messenger, a newsletter by the Lake Manitou Association.

The associations continues their efforts for aquatic plant control. “We have applied for aquatic

plant control treatments designed to access areas most susceptible to plant affecting public navigation,” the newsletter states. This comes with assurance as they contract Tier 2 testing, ensuring all plant life needed for fishery and ecosystem is viable.

New dusk to dawn lights will be installed on the Prairie buoys for safer navigation during nighttime hours. The news letter states, “Now that the Prairie has been reduced in size, we need to add additional protection to the

area.”

Nine new lighted buoys will also be installed along the perimeter of the lake after the association received input and concerns from citizens. The association asks to remember when navigating within areas between buoys and the shoreline to use idle speed as well as travel perpendicular to shoreline. This is a safety precaution due to swimmers in the area.

In addition, they are installing a new informational sign at the boat ram just north of the Elks Golf Course and updating the sign at the north boat ramp on State Road 14. These signs are to remind everyone of basic navigation and safety rules while enjoying the lake.

Organizers are gearing up for the Fulton County Historical Power Show June 10-12, located on the Fulton County Historical Society grounds four miles north of Rochester on U.S. 31. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission Friday and Saturday is $3 for adults (age 12 and over), free for children age 11 and under. Sunday is free admission. Free parking and tram rides will be available. The grounds are handicapped accessible.

The three-day event will host exhibitors of antique tractors, lawn tractors, hit-n-miss engines, farm equipment and antique trucks.

Toy Show and vendors of a variety of foods, crafts, flea market items and swap parts will also be available on the grounds. The museum and Living History Village called Loyal, Indiana, will be open during the festival, free of charge to festival attendees. Other visitors coming to the museum and Toy Show that weekend will have to pay admissions to the grounds to visit the museum normally open Monday thru Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

unusual tractor or piece of equipment, no matter what condition, to bring it out for display; you do not have to be a member to exhibit. A variety of tractors will be at the show including International Harvester, Farmall H, Allis Chalmers, Ford, John Deere, Case, Minneapolis Moline, Massey Harris, Oliver, Cockshutt, McCormick Deering and more. All colors are welcome, including displays of hit-n-miss engines, combine, trucks and other various farm related equipment and miniature train to name a few.

This will be the eleventh year for Antique Trucks Display. All colors and brands are welcome. Calloway’s plan on bringing horses to give wagon rides on the property.

This year’s featured business will be Ringle Trucking, Rochester. They will have a tent in center field of the show and have a display of memorabilia along with the semi and trailer.

Also there will be a director’s tent to exhibit tractors from the various board members — come see what they have to offer.

Tractor games will start at 2 p.m.

Friday followed by antique tractor light and medium weight pull at 7 p.m. At 1 p.m. Saturday will be the team tractor pull — two tractors pull one old-fashioned stone boat.

The teams have to pull evenly to make it work. The antique tractor heavy weight pull will be at 5 p.m.

The 50/50 pull is at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Both the driver and the tractor have to be 50 years old or older to participate.

Food vendors will provide something for everyone’s taste buds: Sandwiches (hot and cold), onion rings, ice cream, elephant ears and cotton candy. The Historical Society will be serving all you-caneat breakfast buffet each morning starting at 7 a.m. This includes sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, scrambled eggs, ham, pancakes, fruit and drinks. Also in the air-conditioned meeting room of the museum, lunch will include a submarine sandwich and homemade pie.

Activities during the show will include a parade of trucks and tractors at 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Tractor games will take place all three days. These contests are all done while on a tractor or garden tractor. Games for the kids are also being planned for 3-4 p.m. Saturday, such as pedal tractor pull in front of the museum. Other games include Money in the Straw, train rides for kids and more.

Demonstrations will include baker fans, buzz saw, edger, steam engines and cornshelling. These activities will take place at different times during the day.

Let’s study the Bible Seeing past the pain (Read Romans 8:18-39) “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18) First, the cessation of suffering (Romans 8:18-22). “The sufferings of this present time” are the common lot of all believers. %\ 5(9 521 This genera385.(< tion, which is enjoying more creature comforts than any other in history, frowns upon this statement, but even present-day Christians cannot escape suffering.

Second, the redemption of the body (Romans 8:23-25). We

groan within these bodies. Paul says, “For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven” (2 Corinthians 5:2). Also the psalmist wrote, “I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears” (Psalm 6:6).

We have a redeemed body coming up in the future. Faith, hope and love are the vital parts of the believer’s life. There would be no hope if all were realized. Someday hope will pass away in realization.

In fact, both faith and hope will pass away in the glory which shall be revealed in us. Only love abides.

Third, the intercession of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:26-27).

Have you gone to God sometimes in prayer when you actually did not know what to pray for? All you could do was just go to him and say, “Father.” You could not ask anything because you didn’t know what to ask for. At times like this the Spirit “helpeth our infirmities.”

How wonderful that is. It’s wonderful sometimes to go to the Lord and say, “Lord, I don’t know what to ask for. I don’t know what to say. But I’m coming to you as your child.

And I want your will done.” And the Spirit of God then will make intercession for us according to the will of God. How wonderful that is.

Fourth, the future glory (Romans 8:27-30). In Romans 8:27 the Greek word for “intercession” that Paul uses means “to appeal.”

In our weakness, we may simply be groaning, but the Holy Spirit translates that into an appeal that is according to the will of God. If we pray from the heart — even if our prayers are only groans — they are exactly as they should be by the time they reach God. Everybody likes the first part of Romans 8:28, where all things work together for the good of those who love God. But most people, though, ignore the second part — which is even more important.

So, what exactly is God’s pur-

pose for our lives? God desires to conform us to the image of his Son (see Romans 8:29). God always finishes what he starts; it’s an unbroken chain. Notice that all who are called reach glorification, which guarantees the eternal security of all believers (Romans 8:30).

We should be sure to read Romans 8:35-39. This should give us tremendous assurance.

Graduates of Leadership Academy to lead new paths in community %\ $/,621 +$1'< 6WDII :ULWHU The Fulton County Purdue Extension honored the Leadership Academy Class of 2022 with a graduation celebration on Tuesday, May 17 at the Geneva Center, Rochester.

Through this series of interactive modules, participants learn about their own leadership capacity, the people, organizations and institutions that make up their communities and how they can engage in serving their communities more deeply.

During the program, the 16 participants attended a variety of

classes throughout nine-months.

The classes highlighted various parts of the community from higher education to health care to economic development to public safety. The goal of the program is to develop and foster the participants’ leadership skills, broaden their knowledge of the community as well as create networking opportunities with peers, alumni and community leaders.

In addition, Fulton County Leadership Academy class will be completing four different class projects as a way to give back to our community, while simultaneously working on team-building and leadership

The children’s program is for ages three through fifth-grade and the teen program is reserved for sixth-grade and up.

Both programs offer prizes and incentives for reading books.

An adult program will be offered later in the winter.

Some of the fun activities planned for the children’s program will include: a visit from Silly Safaris, a foam party; a new story walk experience, all at Pike Memorial Park; and a weekly craft for the kids. Children will receive fun prizes at designated point levels, and will be eligible for a weekly drawing for additional prizes.

Teen readers will receive scratch off tickets for every three books that they read to win prizes. They also have the opportunity to attend craft classes where they will make an ocean string art creation, create a unique clay fish of their own and play water games.

All Summer Reading Program participants and their families are invited to attend our summer reading program beach picnic and games finale 4-6 p.m. Monday, July 25.

Stop in the Akron Library to pre-register and sign up for activities and crafts. Pre-registration can also be done on akron.lib.in.us. Most of their programs require that you sign up for a time slot in order to attend and a special parental waiver must be signed in order to attend the foam party.

Now, 18 years later, the memory of Kelsey lives on, even through people who never met her, including some who weren’t yet born when she died. Each Thanksgiving morning since 2004 faithful supporters show up for the “I’m Thankful Four,” a four-mile road run to benefit the Kelsey Mikel Memorial Foundation, which provides two scholarships to NorthWood High School seniors.

They have been active in the Indiana Donor Network, which helps facilitate organ, tissue and eye donation and transplants across the country. They are also active with the organization’s annual “Gift of Life Celebration,” at which Mikel has played an integral role as its emcee for several years.

“August 21 is a day that I’ve always allowed myself to be in a bad mood,” Mikel said, referring to the anniversary of his daughter’s death. “Last year on August 21, my daughter, Mattie, gave birth to our first grandchild. It has allowed me to redefine that day.”

Mikel said one of his wife’s biggest fears was people wouldn’t remember Kelsey. Through their efforts and the support of their community, it is assured that her memory will continue to live on.
