BOATER EDUCATION
For many, Memorial Day weekend was the start of summer; and summer is the season for boating.
From 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 10, Rochester Ducks Unlimited and the Lake Manitou Association will be offering a free boater education class which offers many benefits for safe boating. Lunch will be provided, and registration is required.
The course will be held at Moose Lodge 1107, 1911 Westside Road, Rochester.
The six-hour course is designed for beginning boaters, and the information should be able to be understood by anyone age 12 and up, but others could benefit as well. Those who are 15 and without a driver’s license need the certification to operate most larger boats. Also, Kosciusko County DNR officer Ashley Jackson noted members of the Amish community may also find certification useful.
While the course is also available online, a fee is required to take the test. The in-person class, on the other hand, offers the test for free. Furthermore, said Jackson, “When you take the inperson class, more information is retained.”
Those who stay for the entire class and take the test at the end will benefit in other ways as well. Some states require certification to operate a boat out-of-state, said David Horvath, one of the class organizers. So if you are considering a fly-in trip or boating out of state, the class could help. Horvath added that some insurance companies offer a discount for obtaining safety certification.
The class covers the basic parts of the boat, including navigation
instruments, as well as the laws governing boating, such as limits regarding speed and alcohol consumption. Crucially, the class also addresses boater safety.
Both Jackson and DNR Captain Jet Quillen emphasized the importance of keeping Coast Guard-approved life jackets on hand for everyone on the boat.
“A big thing is having life jackets,” said Quillen. “It’s unfortunate to see a lot instances where if life jackets had been in use there might not have been a fatal accident.”
“A common mistake is going out on the water without being prepared,” said Jackson. Don’t just have the life jackets on hand; let people know where they are.
And while the DNR realizes boating is an opportunity to “have a good time and relax, take a break from the daily grind,” Quillen said, he also emphasized “having a designated boat opera-
tor is key.”
For one, alcohol consumption can lead to inattention, the number one cause of boating fatalities, even if the driver is not legally intoxicated.
len. “Even if the boat sits a week it can transfer invasive plant species. Cleaning all vegetation before putting in is key.”
Staying hydrated in the hot sun is also important. Dehydration can also magnify the effects of alcohol.
“Take your time when you’re on the water, and stay hydrated,” said Quillen. “Anticipate other boaters on the waterway.” This includes watching out for those behind the boats on water skis and inner tubes.

It is also important for boaters to regularly clean their boats to prevent spreading invasive species, especially if you are visiting multiple waterways. “Spray all vegetation off the boat when you’re leaving,” said Quil-

World War II veteran reflects on 100 years of life
On Dec. 10, 2022, Louis Horvath of Plymouth turned 100 years old. This is a remarkable feat in itself; however, before Horvath turned 25 he had already experienced the Great Depression and World War II firsthand.
Horvath grew up in South Bend, where his parents had emigrated from Yugoslavia. His father, who reached the US in 1912, made and repaired shoes, with storefronts in various locations, including the family home. He spoke little English, but, Horvath recalled, “He’d be working on his sewing machine and break a needle or something and say, ‘Damn the Bolsheviks!’ ”
The Horvath home was heated by a pot-bellied stove in the living room. Louis and his brother Pete shared a bed until the latter married.
Much of Horvath’s youth was spent out of doors, playing baseball, softball and horseshoes — “sandlot stuff,” he recalled.
“We were pretty primitive compared to today. There were no electronics in those days.”
That changed when the family acquired a crystal radio in the 1930s. Horvath was listening to that radio when Chicago Cubs’ player/manager Gabby Hartnett hit a walk-off home run in the ninth inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates as darkness was falling on Wrigley Field, just as the umpires were preparing to call the game. The “Homer in the Gloamin,” as it came to be called, helped the Cubs come from behind to win the National League pennant in 1938. He has been a Cubs fan ever since.
Horvath graduated from Central High School just before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, and the US entered World War II. He was working for the Bendix Corporation as a shop clerk.
“I listened to the president’s speech on the radio that Sunday morning, the ‘day of infamy.’”
Horvath was drafted into the Army in 1942, and by 1943 he was training at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He was initially assigned to an anti-aircraft battalion before transferring to the 11th Airborne Division. He qualified to be a paratrooper at Fort Benning, Georgia, in 1945, but not before suffering serious whiplash on the last of five-straight days of jumps.
“I didn’t know I hit the ground. I was out. … But they woke me up … and I guess I was a paratrooper.”
Horvath got the news President Roosevelt had died from a farmer just after a practice
jump. “That same day he died, they took us back to camp. We got cleaned up and stood honor guard for him.”
Roosevelt was staying at the “Little White House” near Fort Benning when he died, and Horvath stood at attention as his body was taken to the train station, accompanied by Eleanor Roosevelt and Chief of Staff George Marshall.
Horvath was deployed to the Phillipines in May 1945. He left from San Francisco on a large transport boat, and while there he ran into a friend from South Bend, a medic who was accompanying wounded soldiers. “He was coming up the stairs and I was going down. … We ran into each other that way, a thousand miles from home.”
As “primitive” as his upbringing in Depression-era South Bend was, Horvath still experienced culture shock in the Phillipines during the war. “You go back 100 years from what America looked like at that time and you get an idea of what it was like.”
Horvath emphasizes he was deployed as a replacement and “never saw serious combat.” However, he did make a combat jump to cut off the Japanese in northern Luzon. Landing in a rice paddy, he was one of several who were injured. “You had just as many guys get hurt on the jump as you do in combat,” he said with a chuckle.
While on this mission, Horvath learned the atomic bombs had been dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He felt relief, and for good reason. “They told us in
training there would be 1 million casualties if we had to invade Japan. So we figure we’d never get out of that.”
He did go to Japan, but it was for the surrender. Horvath was part of the biggest movement by air ever attempted at that time. “They flew a whole division into
Japan on that surrender. When the surrender was signed, we were there.”
The remainder of Horvath’s time in Japan was spent “standing guard” in a rural area mostly populated by farmers. At one guard post he met a fellow Hoosier from Mishawaka. “A year
later I saw him again. My sister married a guy in Mishawaka and this guy was there too. He worked with my sister’s husband. He was a paratrooper too.”
The second installment of this story will appear in the June 7 edition of The Shopping Guide News.
Burket celebrates 20th graduating class
Burket Educational Center has marked its 20th graduating class.
Fifteen students were honored during the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation alternative high school’s commencement ceremony at the school’s historic gym on Thursday, May 18. Eight of them were present.
That means more than 415 students have graduated from Burket since it opened in fall 2003.
Tippecanoe Valley High School Assistant Principal Dayna Kolanowski, who helps oversee Burket, briefly spoke at the ceremony.
“I want you to know I’m very
proud of each and every one of you,” she said in her remarks. “The journey has finally come to an end.”
Burket teacher Micah Lukens also spoke, giving statistics on what the class of 2023 has accomplished.
“Of those graduates, one earned an academic honors diploma. Thirteen have earned Core 40 diplomas,” he said. “The group has collectively combined to complete 268 courses of study, mastered 1,613 units, 10,375 assessments and spent 396,841 minutes on their coursework, which is 100,000 more minutes than last year’s class.”
“This group is truly one that
holds a lot of promise for the future, and the future’s now because many of them have already begun their path towards that,” he said.
Each graduate was then recognized on stage, with Lukens sharing a bit about their journeys to and at Burket and their future plans. The latter includes college, employment and the military.
Following the ceremony, Lukens said that this year’s class had “a lot of hard workers, some big personalities and some that were here multiple years, which it’s really rewarding to see them finish.”
“I’m going to miss them,” he said.

Old bed pillows
Good neighbors: This is a reply to the person who wants to know what to do with old bed pillows. I’ve used many to make throw pillows. First wash the pillows then take the filling out and tear it all apart so that it’s fluffy again. Use to stuff pillows, dolls, toys, hassocks. — A reader

Editor’s Note: Megan Cook is a Registered Nurse and an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant at Woodlawn Health.
Most breastfeeding moms who return to work need to use a pump to supply milk while away. When it comes down to picking a pump, find one you’re comfortable using. Make sure you use it and check it out before returning to work.
When it comes to flange, the right fit matters, and most pumps come with different sizes. Just because it comes with it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right size. One of the reasons to see a lactation consultant is that we can fit the size of the flange, which can help with pumping comfort and
While at work, plan to pump the number of feeds that you’re going to be missing. If the baby is going to have three feeds while you’re gone, then try to plan for three pump sessions while you’re gone to help protect your milk supply.
Freshly pumped milk at room temperature is good for up to four hours; in the refrigerator it’s ideal four hours and OK up to seven days; in a regular freezer it is good for up to six months; and in a deep freeze for six months to a year.
When it comes to freezing milk, first we recommend you freeze smaller quantities in a bag just until we get used to how much baby takes at each feed to minimize waste.
Lastly, I always recommend trying to introduce the bottle before you go back to work. Baby may take a bottle from someone other than mom easier.
If you need help or support, I would be happy to assist. Call (574) 223-2020 to schedule an appointment with me.

The
Let’s study the Bible
The eternity of God (Read: Isaiah 57:1-21)
“For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabited eternity, whose name is Holy; ‘I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.’” (Isaiah 57:15)
The scripture speaks of the great and mighty God in time. He inhabits eternity. Language staggers under the weight of the magnitude of the burden laid upon it. God dwelt in eternity in the eons and ages before creation, and will dwell in the great consummation of the eons that are yet to come. He is ageless and unchanging.
Deterioration (Isaiah 57:1–2). When God wants to judge his people, he sometimes takes the godly leaders away; they are spared the pain of seeing their nation deteriorate and then go into judgment (Isaiah 57:1–2; 3:1–5). Do you appreciate the men and women God has given to provide spiritual leadership, and do you encourage them?
Condemnation (Isaiah 57:3–13). This description of the godless society in Judah seems quite contemporary. God denounced them for lying, worshiping idols, indulging in sexual sins, sacrificing their children and mocking the godly. These people had no fear of God because he did not immediately send judg-
ment, but their day was coming.
Dedication (Isaiah 57:14–21). Even in a godless society, here and there are dedicated people who have fellowship with God. God longs to dwell with his people (John 14:21–24), and he will if they are humble and repentant (Psalm 51:17; Isaiah 66:2). Does God “feel at home” in your heart (Ephesians 3:14–21)?
In Isaiah’s day God had a word of encouragement for the faithful. A highway would be built and the obstacles removed, so the exiles might return to the land and serve the Lord (see Isaiah 11:16.). God will dwell with his people because they are humble in spirit. (See Isaiah 66:2; Psalm 34:18; 51:17.)
Pride is a sin that God hates (Proverbs 6:16-17) and that God resists (1 Peter 5:5-6). God was “enraged” by Israel’s “sinful greed” and repeatedly chastened them for it, but they would not change (Isaiah 57:17). How often he had “taken them to court” and proved them guilty, yet they would not submit. But now that was over. The time had come for God to deal with them, guide them and comfort them.
The tall, graceful former Sears Building is located in Chicago. It was for many years the highest man-made structure in the world, towering a quarter of a mile high above the streets of the city. The thickness of a nickel placed on top of that vast building would be relative to the age of humanity, compared to the age of creation itself. Yet creation is but a small part of the eternity before creation and the eternity that shall follow after creation. In all of the ageless eons, God dwells.

Caston students learn about the watershed
Megan Malott with Fulton County Soil & Water Conservation District worked with fourth grade science students of Teresa Button at Caston Elementary School May 10 in a watershed education program, focusing on water quality.
Malott instructed the students using a watershed demonstration to explore how various pollutants travel with water from its original source.
The demonstration includes building a basic “topography” on a table to represent landforms. Cards were distributed to students representing a community, such as farm, golf course or business district. The students then created their community by placing the cards on the topography.
Pollutants were represented adding a variety of food products to the model and then rain was simulated with a water can. Sponges were used to represent wetlands and buffer strips.
Students, as a group, discussed how pollutants including animal waste on a farm can be carried by water downhill into areas such as streams and parking lots. Leah Walthery, Cass County Soil & Water, then discussed with the class ways to prevent this from happening. One way is with filter strips.

TVHS Building Trades celebrates construction of Cohagan house
Dayton and Tisha Cohagan have gotten their “dream home” built thanks to the help of some Tippecanoe Valley High School students.
The TVHS Building Trades Program had an open house at the home students helped construct for the couple at 4245 W. 200S, Warsaw, on Sunday, May 21.
The kids did most of the work on the one-story home, said Building Trades Teacher Wes Backus.
“We started at the beginning of the school year with the concrete foundation,” he said. “We went through there, framed the basement, got the first floor put on.”
“We did sub the roof out this year (due to the pitch),” he added. “We subbed the finishing of the drywall out, so the mudding, but we hung it all. We subbed the heating and cooling stuff out, but the kids went through there, helped do all the drain lines. They helped a little bit on water lines.”
Kids also “installed windows, doors … did all the trim work at the end (and) installed the kitchen cabinets,” said Backus.
There were 17 juniors and seniors that worked on the home for at least part of the year. The seniors, in their second year of the program, were allowed do more difficult work.
Backus noted he had fewer kids this school year versus the previous one, but they “got just as
much (work) done” as the larger group.
Members of the Cohagan family and their friends also helped.
Backus said the home is around 5,000 square feet, including the basement, garage and porches.
The home has three bedrooms, “with the potential of a fourth one in the basement,” he said. There are two-and-half bathrooms, with the homeowners planning to put
in a third full one in the basement.
Kids can earn 15 dual credits through Ivy Tech Community College through building trades “if they take it both years,” said Backus.
“I’ve had kids go on, and they’ve become electricians. Some have gone on for carpentry and … some have gone on and done plumbing,” he said. “Some have
gone on and done … general contractor-type stuff.”
“There’s a lot of companies
around here that just blow my phone up at the end of the year. They want to know if any of the trades students are available and are looking for jobs,” added Backus. “They love the fact that they’ve made it through the building trades program.”
Two students shared what they’d learned through building trades, what they worked on in the home and their plans after high school.
“It not only taught me a lot of stuff that I’m going to use on my own house, but it taught me how to work with a team and do other things like that,” said senior Blake Wiggs, who said he worked on “electrical work and framing.” Wiggs plans to study electrical engineering at Purdue University.
Senior Karl Parker also helped with the home’s electrical work as well as doing plumbing and trim and putting in windows and doors.
He said he might become an electrician in the future.
The Cohagans said it’s “exciting” that the home for them and their son is nearly complete.
“It’s definitely a good program,” said Dayton Cohagan. “It’s an interesting program to … watch … breaking ground to a full house, and the high schoolers do it. It’s pretty amazing. They do great work.”
“I hope they enjoyed it though too,” said Tisha Cohagan.
The two thanked Backus, the students and the high school for “mak(ing) our dream home come true,” said Dayton Cohagan.
The public is welcome to get on the list to have homes constructed through the program.
