Projects ranging from improvements at Lakeside Park in Rochester to
Projects ranging from improvements at Lakeside Park in Rochester to sensory bags for children should hopefully be implemented in the future in the Fulton County area.
That’s thanks to the recent class of the Fulton County Leadership Academy.
The class had its graduation ceremony Tuesday, May 21, at The Times Theater.
FCLA has existed for at least close to 20 years, according to Fulton County Purdue Extension Health and Human Services Educator and County Extension Director Jessica Riffle. This is her first year running it, with her having taken over after former Purdue Extension educator Mark Kepler retired.
The 14 members of the class of 2024 took part in regular leadership activities.
“We started the year building skills and interpersonal communi-
cation with an emphasis on team building,” said Riffle. “Each participated in a personality assessment that was connected to communication and learning styles. We talked about the nature of leadership, cultural awareness and conflict management.”
She noted the group learned more about county government and visited the Indiana Statehouse.
“So this year the program not only promoted leadership growth within these individuals, but they were also provided learning opportunities of how do you use these skills within the community,” said Riffle.
FCLA members also divided up into four groups, coming up with projects to benefit the community.
The first group which presented consisted of Emily Fishburn with First Federal Savings Bank, Tabitha Olivares with Rochester Metal Products, and Crystal Grossman with Purdue Extension.
Their project was Color My Town, creating coloring books for Mentone and Akron elementary schools, which include local businesses and inform kids about the area.
The second group included Jadelynn Calvert with the Rochester Telephone Co., William Nestel with Rochester Metal Products, Cassie Peyton with Everwise Credit Union, and Paul Zartman with WROI. A fifth member, Micah Bradley with Pike Lumber Co., wasn’t at the presentation.
Their project was improving Lakeside Park to make it a place where people can enjoy Lake Manitou and the beach.
The third group consisted of Jon Ekhoff with the Tippecanoe Valley School Corp., Meghan McLochlin with Rochester Community Schools, and Ashley Mojica with the Kewanna-Union Township Public Library, with a fourth member, Lesley Bowers, with RTC, not present.
Their project was Fulton County Sensory Bags, giving them to first responders and other area entities to help kids with and without special needs. The bags have sunglasses, communication cards, fidget toys and more in them.
Members of the last group were Timothy Kieninger with RapidView and Christian Singleton with Renew Health Chiropractic. Their project was Supercharging Downtown, working to bring an EV charging station to the empty lot where the Fulton County Jail once sat.
After the presentations Tuesday, members received plaques.
Following the graduation, Riffle noted that class members “were so cohesive from the start and were able to build relationships with each other.”
For those who are interested in being part of the next FCLA class, information should be put out during the summer, she said.

Volunteer shares her love of crafting with seniors
By LAURIE LECHLITNER Staff Writer
“I started crafting when I was a teenager,” stated Kathy Stephens-Hawke, Rochester. “I was a bit of a hippy and enjoyed creating bead jewelry, belts and headbands. Now I share my love of crafting with senior citizens at the Community Center through Council on Aging. Coming up with craft ideas keeps me motivated and my mind occupied. I make many friends with those who come to create with me.”
Hawke has volunteered as the craftsperson at the Community Center since August 2021.
“My sister Lisa Byers is the activity director at the COA. I came onboard to help her. When I started, we did a crafting class once a month. Now we have open craft days three times a week in the winter and two times a week in the summer. I still do once a month craft classes, where we work together on seasonal and special craft items.”
The special classes are held on the third Thursday of the month from 9:30-11:30 a.m. “In June we are livestreaming a painting class with Bob Ross. I’m not much of a painter, so I’ll be learning right alongside those taking the class.”
Some of the regular crafts of-
fered on open craft days, which in the summer months are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-11:30 a.m. are diamond painting and ceramic painting. There’s also artificial flowers and other donated items crafters can use to create their own masterpieces.
“Last year a lady who had previously owned a ceramic shop in North Carolina donated all her fired ceramic items. Many of our people love painting and decorating them.”
One of the things Hawke keeps in mind when working with seniors is to custom the craft for people who may suffer from arthritis or other mobility issues.
“Those with arthritis might have trouble cutting or sewing. But generally, those who attend are able to do most things. Sometimes people with dementia come in with their caregivers, who help them with the project we are working on that day.”
Having a son who cuts her wood projects for her is a real plus. “Last year at Easter we created a triple wood cross with nails. It was such a popular project that we did a patriotic cross in June to display for the 4th of July. We used stencils for the stars.”
Something Hawke stresses to her crafters is that they are to come up with their own ideas
and designs. “Their project does not have to look like mine. Some of the people add their own unique touches and their projects are excellent and original.”
Since Hawke is a senior herself, she remarks that she’s basically hanging out with friends at the Community Center. “We have a relaxing time together. I’ll play some background music while we work. Some may be painting ceramics or working on their diamond art. We make new friends as others come to join us. It’s not only relaxing but therapeutic.”
Before retirement, Hawke also had an interesting life. She lived in Australia for 15 years where Hawke and her husband Patrick owned a bakery together. She was also involved in a construction company in Fulton County and has designed a couple houses in the area.
“Come join our COA activities. You’ll have fun and are sure to come back.”

Living for Christ
(Read 1 Peter 1:1-21)
“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:18-19).
By THE REV. RON PURKEY
First, live in hope (1 Peter 1:112). The unsaved person is “without hope” (Ephesians 2:12); yet the believer has a living hope because he has a living Savior. Christ is our hope (1 Timothy 1:1), and we are to look for Christ’s soon return. The Christian does not work for this hope; it is a part of his spiritual birthright. We are born again (John 3:5) into this living hope.
This hope is not only a living hope; it is a lasting hope (verses 4-5). It is reserved in heaven, where it cannot decay, be defiled, or lose its beauty and delight. The believer is saved; the believer is being saved daily (through sanctification); and the believer will be saved completely when the Lord Jesus Christ returns (Romans 8:15-25). The end (completion, perfection) of our faith will be the complete salvation of the believer (verse 9), who will
inherit a new body. In verses 10-12, Peter reminds us that the OT prophets spoke of this salvation we enjoy. They did not, however, fully understand the time or circumstances in which it would appear. They saw the cross and the kingdom, but they did not anticipate the “valley” in between, this present age of the church.
Second, live in holiness (1 Peter 1:13-21). The blessed hope ought to make us live holy lives (1 John 3:1-3). We must “gather our thoughts” and not let them fly loose (see Exodus 12:11). Another motive for separated living is the commandment of the word (Leviticus 11:44; 19:2; 20:7). “Holy” does not mean sinless perfection, which is a condition impossible in this life anyway (1 John 1:8-10). It means set apart, separated unto God. If we are God’s children, then we ought to be like our Father.
Third, a third motive for holy living is the judgment of God (verse 17). God chastens his children today and tests their works at the judgment seat of Christ (1 Corinthians 3:1 & following). He has no “favorites” but treats all of his children alike.
Fourth, a fourth motive for dedicated living is the price Jesus Christ paid on the cross (verses 18-21). Before we were saved, our lives were empty and meaningless (“vain”—verse 18); but now they are full and happy through him. Our salva-
tion was not purchased with money; it took the blood of Jesus Christ, the spotless Lamb of God (John 1:29). His death was planned by God ages before we ever were born; yet, God in his grace included us in his plan! How grateful we should be, and what better way is there for us to show our gratitude than to surrender our all to him (1 Corinthians 6:15-20).

“If you come in with a fractured arm, we can pull that arm fracture protocol. You come in with chest pain, we can pull that protocol,” she continued. “The nurse can go ahead and implement getting X-rays, labs, things like that done before you even see the doctor, so it speeds up the services and care, so then after all those results are back, the doctor can see them and then come in and talk to you about what might need done.”
Woodlawn contracts with its emergency room doctors, with Concord Medical Group starting as its new provider on May 1.
“They’re helping us to improve our patient experience, provide better care,” said McKinney. “We listened to the community that had a lot of concerns about our ER, so we’ve changed our provider group to bring in doctors that are board-certified ER physicians and move quickly.”
She praised the “great staff here and (thanked) the community for letting us know their concerns.”
“I think we’ve got a great team, so we’re here to take care of people,” said McKinney. Emergency Department Director Troy Phillipy thanked the hospital’s administration, board and staff for the changes, mentioning the adjustments would “make the (patient) experience what it should be and what it will always will be from now on.”

Retiring teachers recognized at TVSC Board meeting
By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer
Retiring Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. educators, June Yazel and Jenny Higgins, have been recognized for their years of service.
This occurred at the TVSC Board’s regular meeting at Akron Elementary School Monday, May 20.
TVSC Superintendent Blaine Conley read information Yazel and Higgins had provided.
Yazel, a Tippecanoe Valley High School U.S. history teacher, is leaving to work at Culver Academies. Her previous 33 years of teaching were all with TVSC.
Conley read that Yazel said that “seeing students get excited about learning has always been the most rewarding aspect.”
“Every class I taught, I tried to incorporate hands-on learning and critical thinking skills and making the content relatable and relevant,” Conley read from Yazel’s information.
Her plans after leaving Valley include spending more time with family.
Higgins, has served as Akron’s speech language pathologist, with 26 of her 34 years in education with TVSC.
“It’s always been great to see a student begin to correctly articulate sounds they have been working so hard to conquer. One of the most rewarding experiences is witnessing the moment a nonverbal child begins to use a communication device to express his wants and needs,” read Conley from what Higgins wrote. She “is going to miss the interaction with the children the
most,” read Conley from Higgins’ words.
Higgins plans to spend more time with family, do mission work and travel after retiring.
In other business, the board:
• Heard the annual update on Akron from Principal Scott Sterk. The school’s student council, art banner contest winners, math and spell bowl teams and Project Lead the Way program to teach kids about science-related knowledge were showcased.
• Bid farewell to graduating senior Benton Nellans, who’s served as the board’s TVHS senior student representative.
• Recognized TVHS student Gunnar Crispen for placing fourth place in public speaking in the national Jobs for America’s Graduates competition.
The board’s next regular meeting is 6 p.m. Monday, June 17, at Mentone Elementary School.

“Each day, cigarette smoking kills 9,000 people worldwide. In the United States, 1,300 people die each day from illnesses caused by smoking. That is more deaths than caused by aids, cocaine, heroin, alcohol, fire, automobile accidents, murders, and suicides combined,” stated Robert Shipley, Ph.D.
Over the years, there have been many national campaigns focused on educating the public about the dangers of nicotine use. Smoking and vaping cause many life-threatening illnesses, such as cancer,

Bohs retired from Eastern Pulaski School Corporation as principal of Eastern Pulaski Elementary School. A donation to “Helping Hands,” was conveyed to EPES to honor him for the difference he made while leading the academics at Winamac. Bohs was a huge advocate for literacy in the community. AEDS AND LIFEVACS The Fulton County Health Department distributed automated external defibrillators and LifeVacs to Rochester Community Schools, Caston School Corp., Akron Elementary School and Legacy Christian Academy Thursday, May 23.

Portion of county’s Health First Indiana funds pay for safety equipment for four schools
By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer
The Fulton County Health Department has distributed 26 pieces of safety equipment to four area schools.
That’s due to monies coming into the county via the Health First Indiana initiative.
Rochester Community Schools, Legacy Christian Academy, Caston School Corp. and Akron Elementary School all got LifeVacs to help choking victims and automated external defibrillators Thursday, May 23.
Caston got eight AEDs and three LifeVacs. Rochester got five AEDs and four LifeVacs. Akron received two of each, and LCA got one of each.
Fulton County agreed to opt in to the Health First state funding, which the Indiana General Assembly made available through the Senate Enrolled Act 4 of 2023.
Health Department Public Health Nurse Denise Ostafin noted the county it is receiving more money from the state than it would traditionally receive due to opting into the initiative.
“So, normally we get about $50,000 (annually), this time we got (more than) $225,000,” she said.
“Next year, we’ll get $445,000 and some odd dollars,” said Ostafin.
The county spent more than $41,000 of the Health First funds for the equipment.
Ostafin said the county’s also using funding to pay for health pro-
grams Purdue Extension is doing in the county and helping cover swimming lessons for kids and pool passes, and pay for Compassionate Health Center patients using Woodlawn Hospital’s services.
School staff expressed their gratitude for the equipment.
“Our lower (age) kids are obviously at higher risk of choking, so we’ll distribute accordingly to that, but having a day care in our building now definitely we’ll benefit having (the LifeVacs) available for us,” said Columbia Elementary School Principal Jason Snyder. “As far as the AEDs corporation-wide, we’ve already got AEDs in the corporation; however, just to make them more accessible, reaction times quicker, we’re very appreciative of
the additional AEDs that are coming in because we do have spots that they will be helpful and covering areas.”
“We’re very excited and very appreciative of the health department’s willingness to include us,” he added.
Caston Superintendent Angie Miller noted the donation “will more than double the AEDs onsite at Caston.”
She also thanked Fulton County Emergency Management Agency Director Gail Karas for helping facilitate the donations to the schools.
“We have our current (AED) in the high-trafficked, most likely area to be used, but to be able to cover further out into the out-
side areas and shortening that response time is going to be a big benefit,” said Akron Principal Scott Sterk of the donation.
LCA volunteer physical education teacher, Charlee Schwenk, said she believed “it’s great that Legacy Christian Academy will be receiving one because we are pretty far out of town (at the Geneva Center), and there isn’t one at Geneva Center already.”
“They have a lot of people that come in and use that facility for weekends and camps and things and to have this in that building will help them a lot,” she added. Karas said she was “appreciative of the collaboration” the county and schools did on the donation.
