KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR Rochester sophomore loves expressing herself artistically %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “I love expressing myself artistically, whether it be through drawing, creating graphic artwork, acting or singing,” stated Sophia Freeman, a sophomore at Rochester High School. “I love doing artwork for my friends. I’ve been singing forever. I love taking part in plays and musicals.”

Freeman started performing in plays when she was 8 years old. “I was one of the orphans in ‘Annie.’ I didn’t have a large speaking part, but there was a lot of music and singing.”

In eighth grade, she portrayed Sharpay in High School Musical. “I enjoyed playing a lead role.” In her freshman year she was in “Shrek The Musical” at RHS. This year she was in the play “Radium Girls” and the musical “Frozen Junior.”

“I think what I like best about being in a play or musical is that the cast members become one big, happy family by the end of the production.

And I’ve found that you don’t have to be a superstar singer to excel in a musical. The audience is there for a good show. If a person can carry a tune and is entertaining, they’ll do well

on the stage.”

One of her favorite performers is female vocalist Billie Eilish. “She inspires me. She’s not only an amazing singer, but she’s her own person. She steers away from the celebrity stereotype. I like that.”

When asked if she’d ever want to be a professional performer, Freeman remarked, “I enjoy watching Broadway productions and love being in any big city. But I have a feeling being in a professional production is a lot more work than a high school production.”

Recently Freeman was a finalist in a banner contest sponsored by The Honeywell Foundation Educational Outreach and Psi Iota Xi with the help of the Northern Indiana Community Foundation. The theme was “Adventure is Out There.” Her street banner will be displayed at the Fulton County Public Library until May 25.

“I was excited to create a banner for the competition,” said Freeman. “I have always loved the Disney movie ‘Up.’ In it the saying, ‘Adventure is out there,’ is frequently stated. I created a banner of the Up House, complete with balloons coming out of the chimney.”

By the time Freeman was in

third grade, she knew she was good in art. “I started drawing people and things. Pretty soon my classmates asked me to draw a picture of them. They also requested particular things they wanted me to draw for them.”

Freeman also takes watercolor classes. “I adore my friends and love painting things for them. I also enjoy depicting video game characters and doing other drawings for people.

For example, being asked to create a banner for homecoming was a great honor.”

Even though she’s still a sophomore, Freeman is looking forward to her future continuing education. “I believe I want to go to Purdue, Fort Wayne. It has a good musical and choir program. It’s also got a graphic arts program that interests me.”

She is the daughter of Matt and Amy Freeman. She has two brothers: Mason Copeland, 22, and Jake Freeman, 17. “We’re a close family. We love to go on vacations together. We recently went to Colorado and had a marvelous time.”

At home Freeman also has a pug, Wrigley; an English bulldog, Mackey; a cat, Macy; and Lydia, a bearded dragon.

Work is not a curse. God gave Adam the task of guarding the garden and tilling it. It was a fulfilling ministry for him. Man and God must work together to produce the harvest. St. Augustine said, “Pray as though everything depended on God, and work as though everything depended on you.”

Submitting (Genesis 2:16– 17). The creator has the right to govern his creatures. Love sets limits for the good of man. God calls us to obey him because we want to, not because we have to. He wants children, not machines. Notice especially the word freely in verse 16.

Naming (Genesis 2:18–25).

Man’s naming the animals was a part of his “dominion” as the head of creation (Genesis 1:26– 28). He lost this dominion because of sin (Psalm 8), but we have regained it through Jesus Christ (Hebrews 2:5.).

Insight: Adam also named his mate; he called her “Woman.” Later, he would call her “Eve.” God established marriage to meet man’s need for companionship (Genesis 2:18) and to provide for the rearing of children (Genesis 1:28). In addition it served as a picture of Christ and his church (Ephesians 5:25–32). Adam gave of himself for his bride, and Jesus gave of himself for his bride (John 19:31–37).

It’s a good mix of veterans and new folks together.”

Among the “veterans” is Assistant Manager Maegan McGlothin, who is in her fourth summer at the pool and was lead lifeguard in 2021. She looks forward to a “safe and fun” summer.

As well as being certified and “competent in the water,” a lifeguard needs to have a “high level of alertness,” McGlothin commented.

“There’s a lot going on when you have 50 people swimming a once.”

This summer she also hopes to implement some in-service lifeguard training.

McGlothin said the pool will again be offering swim lessons, which take place before opening

or near closing times Monday to Thursday. The 30-minute sessions are $40 for four lessons, $75 for eight and $100 for 12.

Daily admission to the pool is $4 for adults and children ages 4 and above; it is free for children 3 or younger.

Season passes are available at $45 for individuals; a family pass is $40 per person.

Other services include party room rental. During the day, the cost is $25 per hour and $2 per person. After hours private parties depend on the number of people: Up to 30, $100; 30-50, $125; 50 and up, $150.

Daily pool hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Charlene Patton, 74, Rochester, passed away at 7:59 a.m. Sunday, May 15, 2022, at her residence.

She was born Jan. 23, 1948, in Rensselaer, the daughter of Reuben and Virginia (Bailey) Patton.

Charlene was one of 12 children. Her siblings included Nancy Ward, Sarah Hoggan, Carol Anderson, Joyce Jacobs, Judy Carty, Melvine Grover, Linda Mc&+$5/(1( Carty, Norman Patton, Larry Patton, D.C. Patton and 3$7721 Corbet Patton.

Charlene moved from Fort Wayne to the Cardinal Services Group Home in Rochester in 2012. Charlene enjoyed going back to Fort Wayne for TinCaps baseball games, where she would sit in the sun, have popcorn and enjoy a day at the ballpark.

She enjoyed going for drives with the windows down on nice days; creating “positive rocks,” where she painted rocks with positive messages and placed them around the community in special spots for others to find; and going to the Tim Tebow “Night to Shine” dance, where she was queen for the night and enjoyed the night of dancing and listening to music. She also enjoyed the Red Hat Society and going to Schnabeltier Winery for some of her favorite wines and cheeses.

Private graveside services will take place at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester.

Pat Thompson

Former Rochester First Lady Rochester’s former First Lady, Mrs. Pat Thompson, 81, Rochester, passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 20, 2022, at her home.

On June 13, 1940, Patricia S. Partridge was born in Rochester to Harold and Opal M. Holloway Partridge. Growing up she shared her childhood with a sister, Bonnie. Proudly she graduated with the class 3$7 7+203621 of 1958 from Rochester High School and was a lifetime Fulton County resident.

At First Baptist Church, Pat and Philip Edward Thompson were married on May 1, 1959. They shared 63 years of life’s adventures. Their union produced three handsome sons, Brent, Barry and Brad. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of six grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Pat’s memberships include the First Baptist Church, Eastern Star, former Rochester Jaycees and the Fulton County Park Board.

Many will remember Pat assisting Phil as a clerk for Thompson Auctions for many years. She also served as the First Lady of Rochester for Mayor Phil’s four terms as the head of the city. Pat created delicious treats and tasty home-cooked delicacies as she catered events. As a professional cake maker, the children, young and old, enjoyed eating her special cake cuts, creating white cake sandwiches drizzled with icing from the edges of the wedding cake.

The proud matriarch of the Thompson family, Grandma Pat was known for her collection of cookbooks and rolling pins. She cherished the time with her family, cooking and baking their special meals for family celebrations, always made with lots of love. Grandma Pat also loved grilling out and sitting around the campfire telling stories while making many memories. Pat made beautiful floral arrangements and designed custom floral arrangements for Cobbler’s Corner for a number of years.

Wendell Boyd Bearss was born Feb. 15, 1930, in Mexico, Ind., to George and Merceda Boyd Bearss. He moved to Rochester in 1939, where he farmed and lived out the remainder of his days.

He began his life as a farmer, driving a team of horses alongside his father when he was just a boy, and worked the land until the age of 75. In 1951, he :(1'(// %2<' married Nancy Long Bearss and together they had %($566 six children, Patricia Nicholson (Bill Nicholson), Rochester, Susan Martin (Ricky Martin), Austin, Texas, Thomas Bearss, Rochester, Daniel Bearss (Peggy), Wakarusa, Jane Fesenmeier (Jim), Indianapolis, and Judith Bearss, Rochester.

Wendell and Nancy eventually went separate ways, but their family together grew to include 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In July of 1978, he committed his life to loving Maxine Morris and gained three stepchildren, Deborah Morris, Rochester, Christopher Morris (Janine), Kalamazoo, Mich., and William Morris (Susan), Rochester. During their marriage, four more grandchildren arrived and their combined families built wonderful memories together at their home on Lake Manitou.

He loved his family dearly, and they loved him. In addition to being a farmer, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Wendell actively served God, country and community.

He willingly enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a radio operator and technician in the Korean War from 1951-1953. He led his community by serving on both the school board and the fair board. He engaged in service and friendship as an active member of the Elks Lodge.

He served the Lord and was beloved at both the Presbyterian and Baptist Church, and he lived out the definition of what good neighbors should be. Wendell loved traveling the world with Maxine and together they walked the Great Wall of China, cruised the Nile and the Panama Canal, drank a little vodka with the KGB in Russia and explored South America, in addition to traveling all over the United States. Many of those trips were with their dearest friends, Don and Mary Brun.

In addition to traveling, he enjoyed reading, pontoon rides on the lake, bird watching, working the farm with his son, Tom and grandson, Adam, telling really ridiculous jokes and spending time with his family.

After Maxine’s passing, Wendell lived his last years at Wynnfield Crossing, where the staff, his hospice team, caregivers and children compassionately ensured that he was cared for.

He was preceded in death, but is now reunited with his parents, George and Merceda; his uncle, Gresham Bearss; his brother, Bud; sisters, Francis and Janis; and his beloved wife, Maxine.

Wendell passed peacefully in his sleep in the morning hours of May 18, 2022, to enter the eternal presence of the Lord. He will always be missed.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28, at First Baptist Church, Rochester. Friends may visit from 4-8 p.m.

Friday at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester, and one hour prior to service Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester.

Burket surpasses 400 grads (all time) %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 6WDII :ULWHU Burket Educational Center’s graduation Thursday, May 19, wasn’t only special for the Class of 2022.

It also meant that more than 400 students have graduated from Burket since its inception.

Fourteen students are members of the 2022 class, the 19th one since Burket, Tippecanoe Valley School Corp.’s alternative high school, started. Ten were on hand for Thursday’s ceremony at Burket’s historical gym.

Burket’s teacher Micah Lukens gave opening remarks at the ceremony.

“The students that you see here today have worked hard to get where they are,” he said. “They’ve had to overcome many personal obstacles and challenges. They had to make the passage from youth to adulthood.”

“When it came to earning a diploma, these students buckled down, and they focused on a very significant moment in their life, a moment that will have a great effect for them in future generations,” said Lukens.

Tippecanoe Valley High School Assistant Principal and Burket Pro-

gram Director Dayna Kolanowski also spoke. She’s been in both roles for a year.

“I just want you to know I’ve enjoyed getting to know each of you this school year, and I hope that you all keep the memories of Burket with you for a lifetime,” she said.

“Please now step out, take a deep breath and be successful in all that you do.”

Before congratulating each graduate and telling a bit about their journeys to graduation, Lukens pointed out: “Two have earned academic or technical honors diplomas, (and) six have earned Core 40 diplomas.”

“The group has completed 211 courses on their Apex Learning (the center’s online curriculum provider), mastered 1,243 units of study, including 8,356 individual quizzes,” he added. “They have spent 284,000 minutes on their coursework. This does not include the time they have spent with teachers one-on-one.”

ter the ceremony that the class has “been through a lot with three (school) years affected (by the COVID-19 pandemic).”

“All students like consistency.

Students who have had academic or behavioral issues need consistency even more and they lost that opportunity (with COVID),” said Lukens.

Byron Tinkey, a paraprofessional at Burket, also added his thoughts on the graduating class.

“I’m very impressed with the hard work of all the kids that have graduated today. They’re an inspiration,” he said.

Lukens reflected on having reached 403 Burket graduates with the Class of 2022 graduating.

“It’s a big honor for us,” he said. “I just think of each one.”

“I think it’s a huge accomplishment. I’m super proud of all of them,” added Kolanowski.

“It’s such an important thing for the whole community to chip in and help the kids and that number is a reflection on that,” said Lukens.

Valley recognizes retiring Akron educator %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 6WDII :ULWHU A longtime Akron Elementary School educator was honored at May’s regular Tippecanoe Valley School Board meeting, and a few fellow staff members openly showed their disapproval with her upcoming retirement.

Valley recognized physical education teacher Kathy Good at the TVSC Board meeting on Monday, May 16, at Akron. It had a reception with cake for her before the meeting.

During the meeting, Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. Superintendent Blaine Conley read a statement from Good she had written, which included her reflections on teaching.

Three Akron paraprofessionals came to Monday’s meeting, “protesting” Good’s exit from the school.

Tracy Murphy, Maria Baca and Alana Bogle all donned T-shirts bearing Good’s face and the words “All Opposed,” referring to her leaving.

Conley noted Good had taught for 37 years, all with TVSC. She’s been a PE teacher for 14 years, with the rest split up between teaching special education, kindergarten and first, second and sixth grades.

“I enjoyed creating a safe, caring educational environment for all the children that walked through Akron’s door just the same as I did for my own four children and continue to do for my two grandchildren,” said Good in the statement she had written.

She said she’d miss most “the daily interactions and friendships with the students and staff.”

“I felt like I did my best to create a comfortable classroom that the students would be excited to come to everyday,” Good said in her statement that Conley read. “I also appreciated the opportunity to jobshare while I raised my family.”

Carpenter honored TVSC also recognized Jaeda Carpenter.

He and staff recognized several entities at Akron: the student council, math bowl team, spell bowl team, Unified robotics team and those who’d received perfect scores on the I-READ test for third graders.

This is the first year for Akron’s Unified robotics team, which is also a new program in Indiana. Like other Unified activities Valley participates in, it allows students with and without special needs to participate together.

Akron’s team ended up placing second in the state in competition.

%\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Members of American Legion Post No. 36 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1313 held their annual Drive Around Sunday, May 22, visiting 24 area cemeteries before culminating with a memorial ceremony at Fulton County Courthouse in Rochester at noon.

Pastor Kurt Nichols started the ceremony with a prayer in which he noted modern Americans are “standing on the shoulders of giants,” veterans who gave the “last full measure” to protect the freedoms granted in our founding documents. Such sacrifices, he added, have been “handed down from generation

to generation.”

Following the pledge of allegiance, led by local Boy Scouts, and a rendition of the National Anthem by Erika Yates, granddaughter of Legion Commander Gene Maners, Mayor Ted Denton also spoke.

Denton said Americans too often take Memorial Day for granted as simply a “day off from work.” Rather, he said, it is a day to remember those who died standing up for the principles outlined in the pledge of allegiance. “Liberty and justice for all,” Denton noted, emphasizing the “all” regardless of political party.

The following events are planned for Memorial Day weekend: The Bell Aircraft Museum will have a Memorial Day service at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at the Mentone Cemetery. In case of rain, the service will be held at the Mentone Baptist Church. A reception will follow at the Bell Aircraft Museum, 210 S. Oak St., Mentone.

Kewanna Union Township Fire Department, 404 N Toner St., Kewanna, will host a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday, May 29. The cost is a free will donation.

Junior Achievement seeks golfers and sponsors Junior Achievement serving Fulton County is seeking golfers and sponsors for its annual “Golf Classic” fundraiser taking place Friday, June 10, at Round Barn Golf Course in Rochester.

Gather up to four golfers for a team and enjoy a day on the green while supporting Junior Achievement. All funds raised stay in Fulton County to support programs at both Caston and Rochester School Systems.

The registration fee per team is $240 or $60 for an individual.

The Area Five Agency Senior Open was held Tuesday, May 17.

Approximately 25 participants,

age 60 and up, all from Fulton County competed in the games.

The games commenced with Opening Ceremonies at 8:30 a.m.

Following the opening, participants were able to enjoy fellowship along with continental breakfast. Once breakfast wrapped up, the games began.

They have been active in the Indiana Donor Network, which helps facilitate organ, tissue and eye donation and transplants across the country. They are also active with the organization’s annual “Gift of Life Celebration,” at which Mikel has played an integral role as its emcee for several years.

“August 21 is a day that I’ve always allowed myself to be in a bad mood,” Mikel said, referring to the anniversary of his daughter’s death. “Last year on August 21, my daughter, Mattie, gave birth to our first grandchild. It has allowed me to redefine that day.”

Mikel said one of his wife’s biggest fears was people wouldn’t remember Kelsey. Through their efforts and the support of their community, it is assured that her memory will continue to live on.

State launches second phase of COVID-19 relief spending The Indiana Department of Education released the second phase of the statewide COVID-19 relief school spending dashboard. The newest update to the dashboard reflects the categories of spending that are budgeted and then reimbursed for all local districts.

Rochester School Corporation has an allocation of $4,949,854 and has reimbursed $22,263. Caston Schools received a $1,519,612 allocation and has reimbursed $132,484.

Tippecanoe Valley Schools were allocated $4,089,534 and reimbursed $304,000.

“Indiana is one of the first states in the nation to provide a publicly available dashboard detailing categorical information about schools’ spending of these federal relief dol-
