The living faithful place no expiration date on the annual ritual of planting or replacing flags and markers on veterans’ graves. “The willingness of America’s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude,” said former U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller of Florida.

The flags are a poignant and fitting reminder that, as an anonymous author wrote, “our flag does not fly because the wind moves it.

It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.”

Many communities include commemoration of fallen firefighters and law enforcement officers.

“Each year the Rochester American Legion Post 36 replaces several hundred veteran grave markers at 13 cemeteries in and around the county,” according to Post Commander Rob Beckman. “We feel every veteran deserves to have one on their gravesite.

“Although some are damaged during the mowing season or by the weather,” he said, “many are stolen for scrapping or for some other reason. Replacing these grave markers is quite expensive, so anyone interested in donating toward the purchase of new markers, or reporting the location of any missing markers or information on those who are taking them, please call the post at (574) 223-2617 or email me at post36@rtcol.com.”

“Studying law was not my original career path,” stated Andy Perkins, Rochester. “In my senior year of college, I took a course called law and economics. I really enjoyed the study. When I entered law school, I thought about taking my practice into the business world and earned an MBA. But now I’ve been in general practice for 20 years and love it.”

Perkins graduated from Wabash College with an economics major. He went on to McKinney School of Law on the campus of Indiana UniversityPurdue University Indianapolis. “I had the privilege of clerking for a lawyer in Mooresville and decided being an attorney was what I wanted to do.”

He began at Peterson Waggoner (and now Perkins), LLP in May 2001. “I enjoy practicing law in a small town. My wife Teresa and I grew up in Peru. We really enjoy the Rochester community.”

It is with great EXCITEMENT the Fulton County Fair Association Inc. is looking to change things up a bit at this year’s Fulton County 4-H Fair. Even though he enjoys doing legal research, without the clients, his job would be tedious.

“The heart of the practice is applying law to the facts. The client describes the dilemma, and we look at the laws that apply.”

Perkins loves practicing law in all areas, but he especially enjoys the unique challenges of real estate cases. “The evidence often involves historical documents. That’s an interesting area to delve into.”

He also enjoys municipal law. “I like working with cities and towns, giving them advice.

I also enjoy estate planning.

It gives people peace of mind when we plan for the future.”

One of his challenges is knowing exactly when a particular case will eventually wrap up. “There are a lot of variables. And a quick question can turn into a rather expanded explanation. For example, two people may come into my office and tell me they want a contract and have worked out all the details. But as we work through things, there are questions they hadn’t even considered. It’s my job to anticipate the unknown.”

Another challenge that keeps Perkins on his toes is wading through new issues. “I’ve been an attorney now for 20 years.

But there are still things that come down the pike that are new to me. That’s what makes law exciting. I’ve talked to law-

yers who have been practicing for 40 years. They, too, experience issues they’ve never dealt with before. With every case, there are new facts, and that keeps things interesting.”

Perkins is also an awardwinning photographer. “I specialize in landscape photography. I have some local pictures in my office of Lake Manitou and the Round Barn Golf Club course.” He and his wife enjoy traveling, and visiting national parks. He has visited 44 of the 50 U.S. states.

“I’m always available to help,” Perkins concluded.

“Helping clients figure out the ins and outs of a case is the heart of the practice of law.”

Valley releases refined details of $14M renovation plan %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 6WDII :ULWHU Plans for renovating Tippecanoe Valley High School are progressing.

At its regular school board meeting Monday, May 17, at Akron Elementary School, the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation had its first preliminary hearing on the project, estimated to cost more than $14 million.

The corporation already had two meetings in March for the public to weigh in. Following further analysis, the corporation presented a refined plan Monday.

Fanning Howey is the project’s architect, and the Skillman Corporation, which oversaw the Akron project completed in 2018, will serve as the construction manager.

Fanning Howey Project Manager Mike Schipp and Skillman Corporation Senior Vice President Scott Cherry. Also attending were Baker Tilly Financial Municipal Advisor Brock Bowsher and Ice Miller Bond and Legal Counsel Partner Jane Herndon.

TVSC Superintendent Blaine Conley and Schipp presented the basics of the condensed project at the meeting. The project would add an auditorium, a bigger weight room, a new wrestling area, a fieldhouse and an expanded agriculture area.

At the pool, there will be improved seating, a new deck and new mechanical systems. The high school would also like to update security and energy measures at the school.

Cherry gave an overview of the estimated cost and the potential timeline. The project is estimat-

ed at $14,359,682, which breaks down to $12,059,182 in construction and $2,300,500 in soft costs like soil borings and surveying.

Bids will be put out in January 2022, with construction to tentatively start in spring 2022. The completion date is July 2023.

Valley is seeking to pay for the project using bonds, which won’t raise taxes for those in the community.

Bowsher showed what that might look like using bonds totaling $16,210,000, with a repayment term of 19 years, 11 months.

Following the presentation, members from the public were allowed to speak in favor of or against the plan. Only one person, Akron resident Kirk Robinson, chose to speak, and was in favor of the project.

OBITUARIES Janet E. Horn

Order Of Eastern Star Member Janet E. Horn, 81, Rochester, passed away at 5:03 a.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at Hickory Creek of Rochester.

On Dec. 30, 1939, Janet Elaine Wills was born in Grass Creek. She was a treasured daughter of Paul and Reva Nickles Wills. Growing up as the second oldest of the Wills kids, she shared her -$1(7 ( +251 childhood with a sister, Lou Anne, and two brothers, Dean and Allen. In 1957, Janet graduated from Grass Creek High School.

In Lucerne, Janet married the love of her life, Maurice Fredrick Horn, July 6, 1957. They have shared 64 years of life’s adventures.

From their union came three wonderful children, Patti, Tim and Lisa.

The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of two more generations.

Janet’s memberships include the Order of Eastern Star and “The Friendly 12 Club.” She also loved snaring the bargain of the day when going to garage sales with a carload of gal pals.

With a love for the outdoors, Janet was happy to be planting radiant flowers to enhance the landscape of her home. Each spring brought on the planting of the beautiful garden usually consisting of sweet corn, a vast pumpkin patch, tomatoes and green beans. The Horn ladies, led by Janet, devoted a sweet corn freezing day. Of course there was the pumpkin carving led by Patti and the grandchildren. During the summer weeks, Janet could be seen onboard her shiny John Deere lawn mower, grooming the lawn to perfection.

An extraordinary cook, Janet was at home in her kitchen command post. From there she prepared many meals for the help while observing the activities in the field. At the holidays, Grandma rolled into action preparing the favorite dishes of the day. She made the most amazing peanut butter fudge and pumpkin cookies. Janet also made many unique creations, like her simmering ham and beans with dumplings.

Paramount in Janet’s life was her family. As the matriarch of the Horn family, she was very proud of her legacy, overseeing four generations. She was the rock and always there to lend support when needed.

Left to cherish Janet’s memory are her husband, Maurice; three children, Patti Horn, Tim Horn and Lisa Adams and husband Kent; five grandchildren, Travis Horn and wife Kristin, Ty Horn, Kyle Horn and wife Marjorie, Ben Adams and Troy Adams; three great-grandchildren, Layne Horn, Tanner Horn and Tylee Horn; a sister, Lou Anne Townsend and husband Ryan of Kewanna; two brothers, Dean Wills of Los Lunas, N.M., and Allen Wills and wife Carolyn of Altoona, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Janet in death are her parents; grandson, Jordan Cole Horn, on Aug. 30, 2007; and great-grandson, Trey Douglass Horn, on Feb. 15, 2007.

A celebration of the life of Janet Horn was held Saturday, May 22, in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester.

Chaplain Teri White officiated. Interment was in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.

Harold was born May 28, +$52/' ' 1922 in Chica-2+1621 go, to the late Edward and E. Edna (Johnson) Johnson. He married June 14, 1952, to Margaret Vurum, she preceded him in death in 1988.

He and his companion Geraldine Denning moved to Akron more than 20 years ago. Gerry preceded him in death Aug. 19, 2013.

Harold is survived by his niece Linda (Dennis) Bobson, Mishawaka; a half sister, Betty Biser, and many friends and close neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margaret, companion Gerry, and a brother Melvin Johnson.

A private service will be held at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron.

Charles “Rex” Kerr, 77, of Roann, died 7:35 a.m.

Betty Lou Rohrer, 92, of Argyle, Texas, and formerly Akron, Elkhart, and Rock Lake died peacefully May 12, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. %(77< /28 She was 52+5(5 born Oct. 23, 1928, in Akron. She was the daughter of Melvin Clark and Mildred Smoker Clark. On Feb. 18, 1950, she married Frederick D. Rohrer.

She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Warner of Champaign, Ill., Sherrie (Randy) Brandt, Argyle, Texas; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren; two sisters Mary Ann Heiser Stinson and Donna Wahlig; along with seven nieces and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by husbands Fred Rohrer and Otto Woike; son, Terry Rohrer; brother, Bob Clark.

A graveside service took place at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at the Akron Cemetery, with Pastor Jim Shrock officiating.

The person God blesses Read: Psalm 1:1-6 “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” (Psalm 1:1) Psalm 1:1 tells how to become happy. The word translated “blessed” in verse 1 can also be rendered “happy.” To be blessed

by God is to be happy.

Interestingly, the psalmist explains what the blessed or happy person does not do. First, he does not walk in the advice of the wicked. The biblical metaphor of “walking” refers to how one lives. The fastest way to miss your blessing is to take counsel from those who have no regard for God’s view on life.

Second, he does not stand in the pathway with sinners. The blessed person does not hang out with people who will influence him toward sin and away from God. Third, he does not sit in the company of mockers. Mockers make light of serious things, sitting in judgment of everyone

and everything. The one who is regularly influenced by people with little regard for God finds himself more and %< 5(9 521 more at home 385.(< with human viewpoints and misses God’s blessings.

Psalm 1:2 tells us what the blessed person does do. He delights in the Lord’s instruction.

To delight in something is to find your joy and pleasure in it. The blessed man or woman finds this in God’s word, meditating on it day and night. The psalmist doesn’t say the blessed person reads God’s instruction day and night; he says he meditates on it.

To meditate on something is to recall, ponder, and interact with it in the mind. When we meditate on the Bible, we think about how it connects to our life.

Psalm 1:3-4 tells us the blessed person is like a tree planted beside flowing streams. Such trees are not easily swayed; they hold their ground. The “flowing

streams” in view are irrigation channels, so regardless of how barren the weather, such a tree is positioned to drink from a continuous source of life.

That the tree bears its fruit in its season indicates the blessed person is productive, maximizing his potential. Importantly, fruit reveals something about the quality of the tree that bears it. If you’re not bearing worthwhile fruit, then, it’s because there’s nothing worthwhile inside of you. Moreover, trees don’t eat their own fruit; the fruit exists for the benefit of others. Therefore, you know you’re blessed when you are being a blessing.

Psalm 1:5-6 tells us the wicked will not stand among the righteous on the day when God’s just verdict is rendered (Psalm 1:5). He watches over the way of the righteous. But, because they fail to submit to God’s authority through his word, the way of the wicked only leads to ruin (Psalm 1:6).

We must choose wisely which path we will take. It’s the difference between God’s blessing and God’s judgement (between heaven and hell).

Free June corn and soybean outlook update Each month the Purdue Center for Commercial Agriculture will host a free webinar providing an update on the corn and soybean outlook following release of USDA’s monthly crop production and world agricultural supply and demand estimates reports. The webinars will review the USDA reports and provide implications for the current and upcoming crop year.

Corn and soybean exports, ethanol demand, corn and soybean basis, and farm income projections will also be regular topics.

The next outlook webinar is at 12:30 p.m. Monday, June 14.

Legion and VFW provide services honoring Memorial Day events Members of American Legion Post 36, Rochester, and VFW Post 1343, Rochester, spent last Sunday afternoon remembering many of the area’s veterans by conducting honor guard ceremonies throughout Fulton County.

Each ceremony included an honor guard salute and the playing of taps.

According to American Legion Post 36 Commander Rob Beckman, members of the Legion travelled to 12 cemeteries in the western part of Fulton County, as well as one memorial in Leiters Ford, while their counterparts from the VFW traversed the eastern part of the county.

Once their tasks were completed two organizations met on the steps of the Fulton County Courthouse for a brief ceremony and joint honor guard salute.

During the ceremony, Erica Yates performed the national anthem while Boy Scouts representing Troop 219 of Rochester led the Pledge of Allegiance. Beckman also noted the Boy Scouts also helped place flags on headstones prior to the day of the event.

Mills leaving Akron Elementary %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 6WDII :ULWHU Tippecanoe Valley School Board has accepted the resignation of one of its principals with reluctance.

The board accepted Akron Elementary School Principal Chrissy Mills’s resignation at its regular meeting Monday, May 17, at Akron.

The resignation is effective at the end of the current school year.

She’s resigning after 19 years in education within the corporation, including nine as Akron principal.

The resignation comes after she and her family decided to move to Georgia so her husband, Shannon Mills, can pursue a job.

Mills reflected on her time at Akron following the meeting.

“This has been my dream job.

You know growing up here, going to school here, just being part of that, knowing that I wanted to be a teacher and then come back and be an administrator,” she said.

“You know, God opened that path for me and it has been an amazing journey, with my staff going

Four local students receive teaching scholarships Indiana Commission for Higher Education has awarded 200 scholarships to the fifth class of Next Generation Hoosier Educators.

Selected through a competitive process based on academic achievement and other factors, recipients will receive $7,500 annually (up to $30,000 total) for committing to teach in Indiana for at least five years after graduating college.

Local students earning a scholarship include: • Arika Warren, Tippecanoe Valley High School • Carlee Blackburn, Rochester Community High School • Mallory Hiatt, Rochester Community High School • Brynn Buczkowski, Caston Jr.-Sr. High School “Hard work, passion and academic excellence are just a few characteristics of these future teachers,” said Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers. “We are pleased to award them with a scholarship as they pursue their teaching credentials that will ultimately benefit their students and the state.”

A total of 439 students applied for the 2021-22 Next

Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, with applications from 231 high schools in 84 of Indiana’s 92 counties. 72 percent of applicants were Indiana high school seniors with the remainder comprised of current college students.

To qualify for the scholarship, students had to either graduate in the highest 20 percent of their high school class or earn a score in the top 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT. To continue earning the scholarship in college, students must earn a 3.0 cumulative GPA and complete at least 30 credit hours per year.

Purdue Extension to hold mastering home food preservation program Purdue Extension mastering home food preservation team will be offering a hybrid program providing four virtual sessions and three days of home food preservation methods labs held at Purdue University this summer.

Using the latest USDA home food preservation recommended methods, this program is designed to meet the home food preservation needs of the consumer. Trained MHFP educators will provide instructional course work and hands-on food preservation labs. After completing the program, a final examination will be provided to assess the knowledge gained through the home food preservation series.

Please note, this program is for personal development only

and not for certification in home food preservation.

The MHFP curriculum chapter discussions will be held Tuesdays: June 8, 15, 22 and 29 during a one to two hour session from 1–3 p.m. with a Purdue Extension MHFP instructor.

On July 7-9, participants are required to attend each food preservation methods lab from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants will be able to take home preserved products.

It is thought Dr. John McCrae began the draft for his famous poem “In Flanders Fields” the evening of May 2, 1915, in the second week of fighting during the Second Battle of Ypres.

McCrae was serving as a major and a military doctor and was second in command of the 1st Brigade Canadian Field Artillery. The field guns of his brigade’s batteries were in position on the west bank of the Ypres-Yser canal, about two kilometers north of Ypres. The brigade had arrived there in the early hours of April 23, 1915.

It is believed the death of his friend, Alexis Helmer, was the inspiration for McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields.” The exact details of when the first draft was written may never be known because there are various accounts by those who

were with McCrae at that time.

One account says he was seen writing the poem the next day, sitting on the rear step of an ambulance while looking at Helmer’s grave and the vivid red poppies springing up amongst the graves in the burial ground.

Another account says McCrae was so upset after Helmer’s burial he wrote the poem in 20 minutes in an attempt to compose himself.

A third account by his commanding officer, Lt. Col. Morrison, stated John told him he drafted the poem partly to pass the time between the arrival of two groups of wounded at the first aid post and partly to experiment with different variations of the poem’s metre.

During 1915 John McCrae sent the poem to The Spectator magazine. It was not published and was returned to him. It was, however, published in Punch magazine Dec. 8, 1915.

The version of the first line in the December 1915 publication of the poem in Punch magazine has the word “blow.” McCrae did also use the word “grow” in the first line in other handwritten and printed versions.

Fulton County Soil and Water Conservation District has a 30 foot I&J roller/crimper available for rent. The machine terminates cereal grain cover crops without the use of chemicals.

The cost to rent is $50 plus $2 per acre. Reservations are recommended, especially during the first three weeks in June. Interested parties are encouraged to contact the office to reserve a spot on the

schedule.

A 3/4 ton or larger vehicle is required for towing and a 140 horsepower or larger tractor is required for field operation.

A signed rental agreement and proof of insurance are also required before taking possession of the equipment.

She looked online for a swing you could put the wheelchair on and found one that would work for them. Schwenk reached out to the Rochester Optimist Club and Jim Howard from the Church of the Heartland to help with the purchase of the swing which was $1,600.

6WDII :ULWHU (Editor’s note: This story was written in real time while the writer was on campus at Tippecanoe Valley High School to cover the tennis match.)

Monday, May 17, was supposed to be another day like any other. It likely will become one many in the Valley community won’t soon forget.

The girls tennis and softball teams were both on campus Monday, preparing to play conference games, tennis getting in a Three Rivers Conference dual with Northfield while softball squared off with Maconaquah. Baseball was postponed to Tuesday after the weekend’s news its teammate and classmate, Brendyn Stump, was in an automobile accident and was fighting for his life in an Allen County hospital.

The team was still around, as were some stragglers from track after its practice ahead of the sectional this week. Kids were playing spikeball both in the outfield of the baseball field and at midfield of Bibler-Shriver Memorial Field.

At 4:48 p.m. Monday, Stump passed away from the injuries he suffered from the one-car accident Saturday. He had just played in a doubleheader with the Valley baseball team, and was said to have been preparing to play in an AAU basketball tournament when his car left the road on SR 14 and hit a utility pole.

It wasn’t more than 10 minutes later Rick Shepherd left a group of track athletes near the discus area just beyond right field, hopped in his patrol vehicle and drove to a closer parking spot near the baseball stadium entrance. It was in those moments life got very real for the Valley baseball program, and the community as a whole.

Shepherd and the baseball coaches, including head coach Jarred Littlejohn, motioned over a dozen or so players and told them the news.

“Brendyn was a big part of our team, and like everyone down here, he’s family,” offered Littlejohn. “We know he’s not replaceable, but we also know he wouldn’t want us to quit on his behalf. We’ll play, we’ll play in his honor. It’s hard right now, but it will be good for our guys to get out and play.”

As word slowly worked its way east from the diamond to the tennis courts, the baseball players who didn’t stick around at the field worked to the tennis bleachers. Many were sunk into hoodies, comforted by girlfriends or classmates, a handful on their phones texting between heavy breaths and tears.

The tennis team was unaware of what was happening as its first sets were underway with Northfield. Their match was paused, though, as softball PA announcer Drew Thompson read a brief note about Stump and asked for a moment of silence, but didn’t tip the news as Valley’s administration didn’t want the athletes to hear of the

While tennis coach Andrew Luce was aware of the situation from the weekend, he didn’t immediately know Stump had passed. He was as shocked as anyone. “The girls knew the situation coming into tonight’s match. We decided to just play for him, stay focused in the moment, and work through it,” said Luce, then learning of the passing. “It’s a shame he wasn’t able to pull through. He was a great kid. I’ll talk with my girls more about this tomorrow.”

Softball had also ventured into its scheduled competition. With nearly every girl with a “B” on one cheek and a “4” on the other, signifying his moniker referred to by many who knew him – along with his baseball and basketball numbers – their support was blatant and forthcoming. The assembled crowd easily had to have surpassed 100 into the cozy seating area on Valley’s side of the field. And it wasn’t just the prototypical moms and dads. Nearly every baseball player was there. A host of Valley sports coaches were in and out, and not just spring coaches.

In what has unfortunately been attached to the Valley community the past few years, perhaps a decade or so, they had to rally around one another again in the wake of a tragic loss. What is more impressive in this day and age when technology rules the roost, not one Valley softball player found out about the news until the final out of the 4-1 loss to the Braves.

As the game ended, though, the looks on the baseball player’s faces told the bigger story as they headed for the field for a postgame prayer.

“I picked on him a lot, knowing him personally as a teacher, it’s been rough on me,” said Valley softball head coach Brittany Mathias. “I hurt more for my girls, I saw them hurting all day, and then out here. You just want to hug them and hold them. Getting ready for a game, you look at the crowd, half the community was here because they knew the girls were going to need it.”

As Maconaquah turned their postgame focus to kneeling in

silent prayer as Valley baseball and softball programs united in the middle of the infield, human element once again took over.

“There’s no manual in how to handle this,” said a red-eyed Valley athletic director Aaron Butcher as players found moms and dads for consolation.

Butcher gathered himself after a few moments and offered, “Brendyn was a great kid. He was selfless. He didn’t care how many points he scored or how many hits he had in a game, if the team won he was happy.

Brendyn celebrated his teammate’s success as much as his own. Brendyn will certainly be missed here at Tippecanoe Valley.”
