BARK PARK grand opening on May 14

%\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU A ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the grand opening of Fulton County Bark Park will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at Richland Restoration Nature Park, located on CR 450N between Old US 31 and US 31. Dog lovers — and their dogs — are invited to enjoy treats and be among the first to help break in new benches for the humans and agility equipment for their canine companions.

“We’re excited for dogs to be out and running around and for dog owners to be out enjoying the fresh air and sunshine,” said Fulton County Leadership Academy’s Adrienne Thompson, who spearheaded the project along with fellow FCLA members Emerald Blankenship, Brian Bolin, Jenni Zartman and Renell Finke.

Unfortunately, Bolin died before seeing the Bark Park’s completion.

“He was a big part of the reason we did this,” Thompson noted. “He would be proud… He loved his dogs.” Donations of over $3,000 in Bolin’s name were also instrumental in the park’s creation and he will be forever memorialized there.

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR Rochester native is proof unfathomable dreams come true %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Rochester native, Tessa Brooks, has been drawn to the world of art since a young age.

Brooks shared, “When I was younger, I would ask for art supplies for Christmas. I had a sign that hung on my bedroom wall that read, ‘Tessa Brooks, Author/ Illustrator.’”

The illustrator’s half of the sign has come full circle and the author’s portion is a work in progress; thanks in part to inspiration from Brooks’ latest endeavor.

“I didn’t really feel like I was good at art until high school when Mrs. Schaeffer (Rochester High School art teacher) helped hone my

skills. She helped build my confidence by asking me to do murals in the school,” she said.

Brooks has a vast range of artistic interests. In addition to sketching, painting and watercolors, she is also a potter, sculptor and metal worker.

Soon after her high school graduation in 2021, a chance to guide others through artistic expression presented itself.

“A family friend had asked me to make a pot for her on the pottery wheel. So, I did,” stated Brooks.

Much to her surprise, the pottery creation led to a connection that ultimately became a business prospect to open a pottery studio.

“It was such a cool opportunity. It was definitely something I

wanted to do, but not something I thought was possible until much later in my life,” she said.

Brooks’ space is called Elemental Art Studio and celebrated its one-year anniversary on Sunday, May 8.

Initially, she wanted to call it Clay and Canvas, but after some deliberation, she decided on Elemental …, which embraces all of the elements of the earth and potentially covers any medium for artistic expression the studio may offer.

Her dad helped her customize the space, and her cat, Digits, is there to greet the new faces who enter.

Right now, her main focus in the studio is pottery and canvas painting.

Customers have a wide array of pieces to select from. Brooks provides instructions and supplies and fires the pieces in the kiln to be picked up at a later date.

“People are so fun in here,” she said of the experience thus far.

She has also done to-go packages for the Outlet Youth Center and Columbia Elementary. She packs up the pieces along with paint containers filled with glaze and delivers the product. When the students are finished painting, Brooks picks them up and she fires them in the kiln.

She offers private sketching classes and has done nine-week art courses with children who are homeschooled, which includes a bit of everything, along with watercolor, canvas and pottery work.

One of the things Brooks enjoys most about the studio is meeting new people and seeing them enjoy themselves.

“Kids especially, they love coming back and seeing how different

and how cool their piece looks after it has been fired in the kiln,” she shared. “A lot of people come in here and say they aren’t artistic, but then they make something and, clearly, they’re creative.”

In fact, all of the creativity she has witnessed in the last year has inspired her to start her own book that will feature a collection of stories accentuating everyone’s talents.

“The whole experience has been unfathomable. It has been a dream of mine for some time,” she concluded. Elemental Art Studio is at 713 Main St., Rochester, and is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. To learn more, check out its Facebook page.

The story of the Bark Park’s creation also has that all-too-familiar refrain, “… then COVID happened.”

“It made things longer, everything had to be put on pause, but we were able to pull through in the end,” said Thompson.

Among the other amenities Bark Park patrons will find are a new parking lot and pole building, porta-potty and dog waste stations.

Thompson reminded owners to be sure to “pick up after your dog.”

Most important is the fencing, which was finally installed in spite of steel-price hikes, which required additional funding.

The park is fenced off into two sections, which will separate large and small dogs based on their weight. Smaller dogs will have an area of roughly 125 feet, with larger dogs accessing an area of around 250 feet. Also, a double-door gate will help owners safely move in and out. Signs will be posted specifying weight requirements.

Walsh and Thompson agreed the grand opening would not be happening without the nearly $20,000 grant received from Fulton County Community Foundation. Also, many county businesses responded to a fundraising letter.

But there is still work to be done, said Thompson. In the future she hopes to add more agility equipment and create more shaded areas. She is also looking for volunteers to assist with mowing and general upkeep.

Caston Schools Superintendent Paul Voigt announced Caston School Corporation is hosting a Listening/Visioning Tour during the week of May 9.

The goal of the tour is fostering relationships and partnerships.

bag being left and a yellow tag placed on it.

Additionally, bulk leaf pickup will end on May 31, 2022.

Johnnie Lowella Miller, 75, Macy, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2022, at her daughter’s residence in O’Fallon, Mo. Born June 29, 1946, in Peru, she was the daughter of Emerson Lowell and Viola Mae Case Rains. On April 24, 1964, at the Peru Church of the Nazarene, she was married to Gilford E. Miller Sr., -2+11,( / and he preceded her in death Oct. 31, 2018.

0,//(5 Johnnie graduated from Peru High School and was a homemaker. She and her husband farmed together in the rural Macy area, where they raised their two children. She loved caring for her family, collecting pig figurines and raising baby piggies, along with playing cards and working on puzzles.

She is survived by two children, Lowella (Tom) Wasson, O’Fallon, Mo., and Gilford E. Miller Jr., Macy, and his companion Andrea Vallo; six grandchildren, Justin (Stephany) Sherman, Wingo, Ky., Megan (Travis) Chisholm, Warrenton, Mo., Nicholas (Nichelle) Sherman, North Manchester, Alicia Miller (fiancé, Cory Shumaker), Auburn, Gregg (Megan) Miller, Macy, and Garrett Miller, Kentucky; and four great-grandchildren, Abraham Sherman, Gunner Miller and Grayson and Paisley Miller.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, with Pastor Kevin Palmer officiating. Burial followed in Deedsville IOOF Cemetery, Deedsville. Visitation was held from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Dennis E. Carlson, 74, Rochester, died at 5:55 a.m.

Sunday, May 1, 2022 at Center for Hospice, Mishawaka.

He was born Sept. 14, 1947, to Francis Tru'(11,6 ( man and Mar&$5/621 tha Jean Carlson. He married Mary Louisa Neves July 2, 1967; she survives.

He is also survived by his sons, Shawn P. (Paula) Carlson Sr., Silver Lake, Nelson M. (Tracy) Carlson, Elwood, Dylan W. (Amanda) Carlson, Akron; 10 Grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; brothers, Kent (Elizabeth) Carlson, Rochester, Keith (Chris) Carlson,Akron and Kevin (Debra) Carlson.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jerry Carlson; and a sister-in-law, Kathy Carlson.

A celebration of his life is being planned at a later date.

Charles R. Craig, 55, Rochester, passed away at 9:35 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2022, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 10, 1967, in Plymouth, the son of James and Eldora (Manns) Craig. On Jan. 5, 2005, in South Bend, he married Linda (Dixon) Matthews and she survives.

Charles had worked at various manufactur&+$5/(6 5 ing facilities including many years in trailer pro&5$,* duction. A skilled craftsman, he also did construction projects for customers with a specialty of building decks. In his spare time, he enjoyed working on cars.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Craig, Rochester; children, Jason Heuburger, Bremen, Carol Moyer, Elkhart, and Chrystal Bunch, Etna Green; grandchildren, Christopher Waggoner, Hailey Waggoner, Gary Bunch, Braxton Bunch, Isiah Bunch, Jermiah Bunch and Kensley Bunch; great-granddaughter, Harlyn Waggoner; sister, Doreen Honeycutt, Milford; and brother, Gerold Craig, Plymouth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Amanda Bunch; and brother, Mark Craig.

Friends visited from 2-4 p.m. Friday, May 6, at Zimmerman Bros.

Funeral Home, Rochester. Burial will be at a later date at Citizens Cemetery, Rochester.

Donita was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Ronald Teel.

The funeral service will take place 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, at King Memorial Home. 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone.

The interment will take place following the service in the Mentone Cemetery.

OBITUARIES Teresa Hammel

Co-owner Of Hammel Wrecker Service Teresa Hammel, 63, Rochester, passed away at 5:59 p.m. Sunday, May 8, 2022, at Lutheran Hospital of Fort Wayne.

On Oct. 27, 1958, Teresa Sue was born in Rochester to George E. Jr. and Catherine “Mick” Kirkpatrick Barnett. Growing up she shared her childhood with two sisters and two brothers. Proudly she graduated 7(5(6$ from Rochester High School with the Class of 1977. +$00(/ Teresa and Jon M. Hammel were married Nov. 1, 1986, in Sanibel, Fla. They have shared 35 years of life’s adventures.

The Hammels enjoyed traveling. They went to Lookout Mountain while in Colorado and most recently went to Florida.

As the co-owner of the Hammel Wrecker Service, Teresa served as the office manager and the vice president for 24 years. She took great pride in working on and completing expansion projects for the business.

Planting flowers to enhance her lawn and maintaining her huge vegetable garden was a favorite hobby. Hunting mushrooms was a highlight of the spring season.

Family time around the dinner table was a treasured time. There was nothing better than her sloppy joes, steamy vegetables and potato soups, and the delicious pineapple upside down cake. Usually, Beatles music could be heard in the background during these times.

Left to cherish the memories of Teresa are her husband, Jon; daughter, Hali Warnick and husband Mark of Indianapolis; son, Ian Hammel and wife Samantha of Rochester; two sisters, Sheila Banush and husband Rick of Rochester and Tami Harrah and husband Max of Rochester; two brothers, Mike Barnett and wife Rhonda of Rochester and Pat Barnett of Craig, Colo.; in-laws, Bill and Vicki Hammel of Rochester, Mike Hammel of Rochester, Lois Hammel of Rochester and Loretta and Tom Blessing of Goshen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Teresa in death are her parents.

A celebration of the life of Teresa Sue Hammel will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 13, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester.

Friends may visit with the family from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, May 12, and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Rochester IOOF Cemetery.

Donald B. Shultz Owner Of Shultz Timber Inc.

Donald B. Shultz, 82, Peru, passed away at 3:40 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 2022, at his residence.

Born March 12, 1940, in Miami County, he was the son of Ernest Porter and Mauna Fay (Piatt) Shultz. On Sept. 29, 1957, in Peru, he was married to Elizabeth Ann Guinn, and she preceded him in death Sept. 12, 2020.

'21$/' % He attended Jefferson Township High School 6+8/7= (Mexico, Ind.) and was a member of the class of 1958 and Deedsville Community Church. He was owner/operator of Shultz Timber Inc. in Macy. He enjoyed working, mowing his grass, cars, trees and being outside, but most of all, he loved his family, especially his grandchildren. Don was a storyteller and loved spending time visiting with others, many whom were privileged to be given a nickname by him.

Survivors include seven children, Tim “Dink” (Rebecca) Shultz, Kokomo, Porter “Porty” Shultz, Denver (special friend, Shari Ludlow, Kokomo), Crystal “Cristy” (Kevin) Hook, Alabama, Alisa “Lisa” Shultz, Nyona Lake (special friend, Brad Nutt, Mexico), Shelley (Troy) Stein, Chili, Kelly Shultz (Cassie Smith), Rochester, and Brandy (Kevin) Burns, Florida; many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Tony Shultz, Kewanna; and three sisters, Penny Stapleton, Peru, Karla Wolfe, Mexico, and Margaret Sixby, Florida; in addition to several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his beloved canine companion, Corky.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Troy Shultz; one great-granddaughter, Kenzie Shultz; three brothers, Marion, Ed and George Shultz; four sisters, Alma Sease, Sarah Mikesell, Pauline Wahab and Lois DeFord; and a beloved dog, Misty Lou. Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, with Pastor Bill Babb officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery, Mexico. Visitation was from 1-7 p.m. Friday, May 6, at the funeral home.

Charles M. Easton Auto Technician

Charles M. Easton, 88, Rochester, passed away at 10:37 a.m. Thursday, May 5, 2022, at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester.

He was born Dec. 30, 1933, in Rector, Ark., the son of Charles and Louise (Tyler) Easton. On July 1, 1953, in Hernando, Miss., he married Linda Lou Sommers and she survives. &+$5/(6 0 Charles was an auto technician and had owned ($6721 and operated Shell service stations in Kokomo, South Bend, Greentown, Tipton and Roselawn. He had been a member and elder at Christ Chapel and the Christian Center Church, South Bend, and a member of Gideon International. He had performed missionary work in Nepal and Honduras. Other than the love for his family, he was a dedicated fisherman, participating in many fishing tournaments, and enjoyed golf.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Easton, Rochester; children, James A. Easton, Kokomo, and Jeffrey (Linda) Easton, Elkhart; grandchildren, Michelle (Frank) Hilbert, Osceola, January Easton, Muncie, Lacey (Christopher) Sinnett, Washington, D.C., Eric (Destiny) Easton, Edwardsburg, Mich., and Matthew Easton, Fort Wayne; great-grandchildren, Angelica Sharp, Logan Hilbert, Peyton Hilbert, Austin Briscoe, Ethan Pharis, Elliana Sinnett, Easton Sinnett, Elias Sinnett and Chloe’ Leemon; brother, Gene Easton, Kempton; and sister, Cleta Bell, Amboy.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lonnie Easton.

Let’s study the Bible Live in hope

(Read 1 Peter 1:3-12) “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to %\ 5(9 521 a living hope 385.(< through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” (1 Peter 1:3-5) The person was has trusted Jesus Christ as Savior has a living hope because he has a living Savior. Jesus Christ is our hope (1 Timothy 1:1), and we look for his soon-expected return. The Christian does not work for this hope; it is a part of his spiritual birthright. We are born again (John 3:5) into this living hope.

This hope is not only a living hope; it is a lasting hope (1 Peter 1:4-5). It is reserved in heaven, where it cannot decay (“incorruptible”), be defiled, or lose its beauty and delight. But not only is the hope reserved; the believer too is kept (guarded as by a soldier) by the Lord. We are kept by God’s power because of the faith we have placed in him. Eternal security is not based on the faith of men, but on the faithfulness of God. The believer is saved; he is being saved daily (through sanctification); and he will be saved completely when Jesus Christ returns (Romans 8:15-25).

The end (completion, perfection) of our faith will be the complete salvation of the believer (1 Peter 1:9), who will inherit a new body.

However, until Jesus Christ returns, the believer must go through testing. A faith that cannot be tested cannot be trusted. Our suffering

is but “for a season” as the Lord sees it (“if need be” — 1 Peter 1:6); but the glory will be forever. 1 Peter 1:7 compares the trial of our faith to the testing of gold. The word “trial” means “approval.” The comparison suggested by Dr. Kenneth Wuest (an Evangelical Biblical Greek New Testament scholar) is that of a prospector bringing ore in to be tested.

The assayer gives him a certificate stating that the ore contains gold.

The certificate is the approval of the ore, and this paper is worth much more than the little sample of ore that was tested. In the same way our faith is tested, a “sample” at a time; and the approval of our faith means that there are more riches to follow. The suffering we endure here will result in more glory when Christ comes. Knowing this, we love him more.

In 1 Peter 1:10-12, Peter reminds us that the Old Testament prophets spoke of this salvation we enjoy.

They did not, however, fully understand the time or circumstances in which it would appear. They saw the cross and the kingdom, but they did not anticipate the “valley” in between this present age of the church.

moment the 5,000 capacity stadium will be filled by the intertwining melody and harmonies of Our Manitous, Rochester High School’s top-tier choral orchestra composed of 27 students and led

by Lisa McMillen.

The event will be the first time the choir has performed in the

venue; in fact, this is the first year they auditioned, and Our Manitous’ video, which was sent in February, was selected from roughly 120 other audition videos. McMillen learned of the selection in March.

“I’m really excited. It’s an awesome opportunity, especially con-

sidering how small our school is,” commented Lola Brady, who sings alto. “I’m really impressed with everyone on how well we’re doing and how hard we’re trying.”

Brooks, like many other choir members, has been with McMillen since elementary school.

“She’s the best teacher there is… I’ve learned a lot from her. I wouldn’t be here today if not for her.”

McMillen is in her 38th year of teaching vocal music, 34 of those in Rochester schools. “I taught K-5 general music at Riddle and Columbia elementaries for 25 years, moved on to teach grades 4-7 for four years, grades 7-12 for three years and have been teaching grades 9-12 at Rochester High School the last five years,” she recalled. “The singers who are currently freshman are the last group of students that I have taught since they were in elementary school… I ‘moved up’ each year with the current seniors, from elementary to middle school, then middle to high school, but I promised them I would not be moving on to college.”

McMillen is clearly proud of ‘her’ Manitous. “Not only are they a very musical group, but they are the kindest group of kids I’ve

ever worked with, to one another and to everyone else.”

To be in Our Manitous, students need not only be able to match pitch, but also be flexible, able to switch from bass to tenor, for example. Along with cooperation and teamwork, said McMillen, choir singing can be a “great way to build self confidence…

Singing with a group of kids forces you to come out of your shell.”

Our Manitous members are, for the most part, “academically grounded,” she added, as well as “well rounded,” involved with sports and other activities. The choir gives them an opportunity to “get away from that and deal with the emotional side of things, to relax and do something they enjoy.”

“You get the right group of people and put it all together and it sounds amazing,” explained Peyton Brooks, a bass in his second year with the group. “I help to make it sound the best I can.”

The choir will arrive at Four Winds Field at 6:15 p.m. and are slated to perform at 7:05 p.m.

Anyone interested in attending can get tickets at the box office, said McMillen, and ask to be seated with Rochester High School’s Our Manitous group.

Our Manitous’ final performance will be Sunday, May 15, in Rochester High School auditorium.

Akron Carnegie Public Library’s Dish it Up Recipe Club has moved to the third Thursday of each month. The club will meet 6 p.m. Thursday, May 19.

The theme for this month will be Pizza. Deep Dish, Veggie or whatever you want your pizza to be. All recipes need to be submitted a week in advance to make the cookbook pages. Every participant will leave with a copy of all the dishes prepared and can share at the program.

District 18 State Senator Stacey Donato released the following information regarding Mental Health Awareness Month: Many Americans deal with mental health issues, and Indiana is no exception. Between March 2021 and 2022, Indiana’s Be Well Crisis Helpline experienced an 86.9% increase in calls.

In an effort to spread awareness and fight stigmas surrounding mental health, the United States recognizes May as Mental Health Awareness Month.

These stigmas and lack of knowledge of resources can result in communities losing too many individuals to overdoses and suicide. Since substance abuse and self-harm are associated with mental illness, I supported Senate Enrolled Act 84 to help prevent overdose and suicide-related fatalities in Indiana.

SEA 84 requires the Indiana Department of Health to produce a report that tracks, by month, the number of suicide and substance abuse-related fatalities by county, the demographics of each victim, and the method of suicide or overdose. In doing so, the state will receive better data to make informed public policy decisions in an effort to curb suicide and overdose-related fatalities as well as to better help individuals in need of mental health care.
