7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Late spring and summer is a busy time for animal shelters everywhere, and Fulton County Animal Adoption and Education Center, 1540 Wentzel St.,Rochester, is no exception. “People are moving around more… animals are outside more and getting lost. “Unfortunately, for some people, pets become an inconvenience,” said Janet Showley, FCAC executive director.

In addition, May is the beginning of kitten season, which generally runs through October. “Having several litters makes things more chaotic at the shelter,” Showley noted.

“In May, we start getting busy with the wave of animals coming in. In the summertime, we are usually at capacity.” The Rochester facility can hold up to 75 cats and 20 dogs.

To help ease overcrowding, BISSELL Pet Foundation sponsors adoption fees up to $25 each at over 275 shelters across the U.S. and

Canada as part of its “Empty the Shelters” event. Showley became aware of the event three years ago when she saw a promotion on Facebook. BISSELL, a vacuum company benefitting from pet owners’ perpetual war with shed fur, also has a “big heart for animals,” she commented.

Fulton County Animal Center is one of 10 shelters in Indiana where BISSELL sponsors adoptions, and this year a week has been added to event, which will now run May 3-14. Throughout this time, Showley expects to get more animals in, which can be seen on petfinder.com by entering the zip code 46975.

They also post on FCAC’s Facebook page “all the time,” said Showley.

To streamline the adoption process, Showley recommended making an appointment ahead of time. With dogs, for example, meet-andgreets are required in the event the client has other animals at home.

Rouch plays host to an equine ambassador %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Vicky Rouch of Up The Lane Farm, located between Royal Center and Kewanna, has been involved with horses for over 50 years. She has been a trainer and groomer for others and has been an owner herself, most notably of standard bred harness-racer Star City Hero. Horses have taken her all over the United States, Canada and Europe.

Lately, however, her equine adventures have been closer to home. In March, she agreed to house and train Homer, an Amer-

ican Trotting-bred pony who is an ambassador for the Harness Horse Youth Foundation, travelling to camps and events as far as Maine, introducing young people and their families to the world of harness racing.

“I am exercising him every day so when he goes to camps he’ll be fit and ready to go around the racetrack,” said Rouch. “It’s just like an athlete… just like a runner,” she added.

Homer has been “out to pasture” since fall 2021 and she is slowly getting him in shape.

While riding, Rouch said it is important to pay close attention to the feet, where the horse is walking. Homer, she explained, is very responsive. “His head, neck

“We implant a microchip before they leave… it’s a nice reassurance when they try to escape,” she noted.

FCAC receives animals in four ways, said Showley. Animals are brought to the intake building by animal control officers and the public. Strays are kept for three days before being entered into the system. They also receive owner surrenders such as Pumpkin, a cat whose owner’s health prevented him from giving proper care. Lastly, when FCAC is below capacity, they may assist other shelters. All the animals receive a thorough assessment process. Not only are they physically examined, but employees find out as much as they can about each animal’s psychological state, its ability to get along with other animals as well as children and adults.

Dogs also have access to a spacious, grassy area on the property where they get lots of exercise. For some, this is a new experience.

FCAC is the only open admission animal shelter in Fulton County and in 2016 it reached “no-kill” status with a save rate over 90% for both cats and dogs. Animals are

and ears are telling me what’s going on. I can tell if he’s excited.”

In addition, Rouch recently had Homer’s feet trimmed and new shoes fitted by David Bandelier, a local blacksmith. He has also had all of his vaccinations.

Homer is a gentle, good-natured pony in spite of his racing background. This combined with his relatively diminutive size makes him the perfect intro-

duction to youngsters who love horses and may be interested in pursuing harness racing.

Rouch will accompany him to several Indiana events, including clinics at Crimson Lane Farm, July 10-14, and DeLong Farm, July 16, both in Anderson. “I’ll be teaching them how to brush and harness the horse.” She is considering traveling out east as well.

only euthanized when unhealthy and untreatable. When capacity is reached, FCAC partners with other facilities to find a space.

May 3-14 marks the first of four Empty the Shelters events throughout the year and one of the most important. The next one is at the peak

of the busy season, July 25-31.

“We look forward to placing as many animals as possible into loving homes to prep ourselves for the busy season,” said Showley.

She sees kids from the camps and clinics coming back to sport as adults. “They are coming back and buying horses, training horses… They’re riders in races who have been in the camp. They’re running the video cameras, doing tech support and working in the offices with program direction.”

Of course, Rouch also benefits.

For one, working with horses, especially one like Homer, is good for the soul. “It has a calming effect,” she said. “He just mellows you out.”

Rouch became involved with Homer and HHYF through her lifelong friendship with Ellen Taylor, HHYF executive director.

The nonprofit charity was started in 1976 “To provide young people

and their families information and experiences with harness horses in order to foster the next generation of fans and participants.” And as far as Rouch is

concerned, they are succeeding.

Jeffery Lee Kingery, 60, Rochester, passed away at 7:33 a.m. Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester.

He was born May 29, 1961, in Rochester, the son of William J. and Patricia (Thompson) Kingery.

Jeff had worked for Rochester Metals for many years and had done construction work with -())(5< /(( his uncle, Larry Norman. He had been a member of .,1*(5< the VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed Frisbee golf, golf, shooting guns and was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan.

Survivors include his son, Anthony Kingery, Logansport; daughter, Amy Kingery, Bremen; granddaughter, Amara Schneider, Bremen; brothers, Kenny Kingery, Fulton, and Alan (Lori) Kingery, Kewanna; sisters, Bonnie Kingery, Logansport, and Julie (Lynn) Miller, Russiaville; several nieces and nephews; and his special feline companion, Tootie.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary P. Marsh Retired From The FBI Mary P. Marsh died peacefully Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at her home in Fairfax, Va., after several years of declining health due to Parkinson’s disease.

Mary was born in Grass Creek to Frank and Hazel Pownell. After graduating from Fulton High School as class valedictorian, she was hired by the 0$5< 3 0$56+ FBI in Washington, D.C., where she worked for the late FBI Assistant Director Louis B. Nichols, who was a top aide to the late FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover.

Mary retired from the FBI soon after her marriage to John E. Marsh Jr., who at that time was an attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice. She had three children, a daughter and identical twin sons.

Later, Mary began a new career with the National Symphony Orchestra, where she worked for more than 30 years.

Mary loved classical music and spent many happy years at the National Symphony, first working for the NSO’s Women’s Committee and then as an executive assistant to several NSO directors. Smart, beautiful, charismatic and possessing a great sense of humor, she was much loved by the symphony’s staff, board of directors and orchestra members. When Mary retired from the NSO, then Washington, D.C., Mayor Anthony Williams honored her service by proclaiming Sept. 28, 2000, as “Mary P. Marsh Day” in the District of Columbia, and the NSO Board made her an honorary lifetime member.

Mary’s husband, and son, Darrell, predeceased her, as did her twin sister, Marge; her sister, Helen; and her brothers, Howard and Bob. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Kaid Benfield); son, Terrell (Sara); Darrell’s wife, Holly; and four grandchildren, Natalie, Rachel, Alexa and Steven. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and many friends.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at a later date. The family asks those who are interested to consider a donation in Mary’s memory to the National Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Evabelle Lewis Enyart, 92, Rochester, passed away at 12:33 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2022, at Hickory Creek of Rochester.

She was born Aug. 23, 1929, in Rochester, the daughter of Lee and Martha Washington (McGraw) Lewis Sr. After raising her four children, Evabelle re(9$%(//( joined the workforce as a bookkeeper in South Bend /(:,6 (1<$57 for South Bend Range and at Rochester Homes and Franger Gas in Rochester. As well as being a homemaker, she worked as an aid in the school system. She was charter member of the Mental Health Association in Fulton County, helping create the first learning disabilities classroom in the school system. She had been a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church and a Cub Scout leader. As a dedicated homemaker, she was known for her culinary skills, as well as a skilled seamstress having made much of the children’s clothes as youngsters. She was an avid animal lover and dearly loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Sherry Wisler, Elkhart, Linda Rasnick, Brookston, Cathy Prewitt, Copley, Ohio, and Gary (Gina) Enyart, Rochester; grandchildren, Angelique Wisler, Chicago, Ill., Megan (Bradley) Martin, Martinsville, Joselyn Rasnick, Indianapolis, Gretchen (Dave) Longfellow, Chalmers, Margot (Bob) Beesley, Akron, Ohio, Lisa (Tim Boswell) Rupple, Medina, Ohio, Adam (Amber) Enyart, Rochester, and Audrey Enyart, Rochester; great-grandchildren, Emerson Rose, Chase, Kaley, Hanna, Ryan, Lillianna, Elise, Lucas, Carson, Madeline Moon and Teagan; and brother, Clyde (Jane) Lewis, Logansport.

She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Mark Prewitt; sisters, Harriet Herrell, Sarah Jane Young, Louise Cook and Evelyn Ballinger; brothers, Raymond Lewis, Jack Lewis, Harvey Lewis and Lee A. Lewis Jr.; and her children’s father, Emerson.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, at St. John Lutheran Church, Rochester, with Pastor Curtis May officiating. Visitation was held from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester.

William B. Enyart U.S. Army Veteran William B. “Bill” Enyart passed away Sunday, April 24, 2022, in Loveland, Ohio.

Bill, son of Gilbert and Ada Enyart, was born May 2, 1933. He grew up in the Akron and Rochester area and graduated from Rochester High School in 1951. After graduation, Bill answered the call to the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. Returning home, Bill married LaDonna Funnell and together they enjoyed 59 years.

After serving in the Korean War, Bill attended Purdue University to study engineering and worked for many years as an electrical engineer. After retirement, Bill worked at Meijer for another 16 years.

Bill was a man of many talents. Whatever Bill set his mind to, be it roller skating, antique car restoration, oil painting, collection of trains, cameras, metalworking, gardening or repairing whatever may be broken, Bill could do it. Most of all, during his recent years, Bill loved a great bargain and spent hours scouring junk shops and Goodwill stores looking for that bargain.

Preceding Bill in death are his parents, Gilbert and Ada Enyart; wife, LaDonna Enyart; and brother, James Enyart.

Bill is survived by two sons, Andrew R. Enyart and Jeffery M. (Julie) Enyart; grandchildren, Alexander S. (Kelsey) Enyart and John Avery Enyart; and his brother, Richard (Helen) Enyart.

Quarter pound of meth leads to arrest of two in Rochester A Rochester couple was arrested on Friday, April 29, after Indiana State Police troopers served a search warrant.

May is better speech and hearing month Better Hearing and Speech Month was founded in 1927 by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Each May, this annual event provides an opportunity to raise awareness about hearing and speech problems and to encourage people to think about their own hearing and get their hearing checked.

Chuck Smith at Affordable Hearing in Rochester noted there are “a lot of changes in the hearing aid industry,” and the old trope of squealing hearing aids is very much a thing of the past. “The tech has changed so much. They’re designed not to squeal anymore.”

Newer hearing aids can be tuned to prescriptional loss.

Many connect to your phone and can be controlled to handle music, movies and podcasts. “It’s as high tech or low tech as you need to be,” said Smith, and service plans may help with the cost.

“No one should not get hearing aids because of the cost.”

Hearing loss and some ringing is sometimes related to ear wax as well. According to Smith, chocolate, alcohol and stress may also be causes of ringing in the ears.

Affordable Hearing offers a process that comfortably breaks up wax and sucks it out through tubes fitted over the ears like headphones.

Early identification and intervention for hearing loss is important. Many people live with unidentified hearing loss, often failing to realize that they are missing certain sounds and words. Checking one’s hearing is the first step toward addressing the issue.

According to the World Health Organization’s first World Report on Hearing: Noise is now being acknowledged as an important public health issue and a top environmental risk faced by the world today.

Over 50% of people aged 12– 35 years listen to music via personal audio devices at volumes

that pose a risk to their hearing.

A rule of the thumb for staying safe is to keep the volume below 60%.

If you frequently use personal audio devices around loud sounds: instead of turning the volume up, consider using noise cancelling earphones or headphones.

Listening through personal audio devices should not exceed 80 dB (adults) or 75 dB (sensitive users: e.g., children) for 40 hours a week.

Conley, rejected all bids for the high school building project on Thursday, April 21.

Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation had received 15 bids for 10 bid categories for the Tippecanoe Valley High School renovations and addition project, Conley said.

Project administration and construction management services company, The Skillman Corporation, met with each of the contractors and reviewed each bid, he said. The lowest bid for each of the 10 categories total $21,656,265.

The low bids were Brown & Brown, $6,915,000; Ziolkowski Construction, $2,518,450; Amos Exteriors Inc., $1,666,085; Oosterbann & Sons Co., $457,075; Jack Laurie Floors Inc., $375,400; Shambaugh & Son LP, $1,315,500; Core Mechanical, $1,175,687; Quality Plumbing and Heating, $6,400,000; and Kissinger Electric, $2,008,755.

“In reviewing these results with the construction manager and architect, I’m recommending that all bids are rejected,” he said.

Conley said the school corporation will continue to review the scope of the work and schedule

and rebid the project at a later date Construction costs for projects across the country have risen significantly in the past year because of a combination of reasons.

“Like we said, we won’t have a tax increase and we’re going to stick to our guns and spend the tax payers’ money wisely,” said Board President Tom Bauters.

Let’s study the Bible Glory in the cross (Galatians 6:11-18) “But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.”

(Galatians 6:14) It was the Apostle Paul’s custom, after dictating a letter, to take the pen and write his own farewell. His standard signature was, %\ 5(9 521 “The grace 385.(< of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you” (1 Thessalonians 5:28; 2 Thessalonians 3:17-18). But so concerned is Paul that the Galatians get the message of this letter, he takes the pen and writes an entire concluding paragraph with his own hand.

“Look at the large letters I write with my own hand!”

Why did Paul write this paragraph, and why did he use such large letters? The Holy Spirit inspired him to add these closing words to give one more contrast between the legalists and the spirit-led Christians, to show that the Spirit-led believer lives for the glory of God, not the praise of man.

Some Bible students believe Paul’s thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7-10; Galatians 4:1415) was some kind of eye trouble.

This would mean he would have to write in large letters so he himself would be able to read what he had written. Whether or not that is true, Paul is making it clear he has something important to write in conclusion so he is not simply going to end the letter in some conventional manner. If he did have eye trouble, his willingness to write this closing paragraph with his own hand would certainly

appeal to the hearts of the readers.

He has shown them that the believer living under law and the believer living under grace are diametrically opposed to each other.

It is not just a matter of “different doctrine,” but a matter of two different ways of life. They had to choose between bondage or liberty (Galatians 5:1-12), the flesh or the Spirit (Galatians 5:13-26), and living for self or living for others (Galatians 6:1-10).

Now he presents a fourth contrast: living for the praise of men or the glory of God (Galatians 6:11-18). He is dealing with motive, and there is no greater need in our churches today than for an examination of the motives for our ministries. We know what we are doing, but do we know why we are doing it? A good work is spoiled by a bad motive.

With one sweep of the pen, Paul brushes away these legalistic troublemakers. He writes, “I have on my body the marks (brands) of Christ.” (Galatians 6:17). This does not mean Paul had five wounds on his body similar to Christ’s wounds; it means rather that he had scars on his body to prove he bore reproach for the cross of Christ. In Paul’s day, men branded soldiers, slaves and people who dedicated themselves to a god. Paul was Jesus Christ’s soldier, slave and devoted follower.

Banner contest finalists’ work on display at library Honeywell Foundation Educational Outreach, Northern Indiana Community Foundation and Psi lota Xi hosts a street banner contest each year in partnership with Fulton County schools. Fulton County Tire Recycling Day on May 7 Fulton County Solid Waste District, 1452 N. Wentzel St., Rochester, will host its next Tire Recycling Day from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 7. The limit is four tires per person. The event is for Fulton County residents only.

FCSWD also has a Pay-As-YouThrow Orange Trash Bag program for non-recyclable trash. Patrons can purchase an orange bag for $3, fill it with up to 35 pounds of trash and turn it in along with recyclables.

Orange bags may be purchased during normal business hours 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Bins are also available for after hours recycling and orange bag drop-off.

When recycling, make sure all items are separated and rinsed out.

Manufacturers require clean and contaminant-free material to make new products.

Twenty-four hour drop-off site locations are available at 1452 N. Wentzel St., former Hart Schaffner and Marx parking lot, Save-A-Lot parking lot and Smith Farm Store parking lot in Rochester; Leiters Ford, Kewanna, Caston and Akron.

Non-recyclable items for the orange bags include: colored styrofoam, wax lined milk and juice con-

:Sbbk ?afZWdÆe 6Sk Fulton County Council on Aging to honor Terry Moore %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU The Fulton County Community Center and Council on Aging dining room will be renamed the Terry Moore Activity Room in a ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 6. Among those expected to speak will be Mayor Ted Denton, daughter and past COA Director Mindy Moore and Dave Smook, United Ministries board of directors president.

Rusty Moore, Terry’s son and current Transpo supervisor, described his mother as “a caring, compassionate person. She and my dad were both that way.”

Terry Moore died in 2021 after a life of service, during which she played an important role in the Community Center

and Council on Aging, where she served as director for 26 years. After leaving in 2006, she served on the board of directors for roughly 10 years. Moore was also involved with United Ministries and was executive director of Manitou Training Center.

Rusty recalled his mother operating COA on a “week to week basis… she would sometimes have to empty the pop machines to make payroll.”

Officially founded in 1974, the roots of COA stretch back to the 1960s, to the Fulton County Citizens Center, housed in the former Rochester High School.

Moore was involved throughout this time and eventually succeeded Mickey Harrison as executive director. Moore oversaw COA when the current building was erected in the early 90s.

Since then COA has provided daily activities, meals and exercise classes, most at little or no cost. These days they also offer day and week-long trips, computer classes, art lessons, quilting lessons, card clubs, BINGO, movie days and Round Table Breakfasts. Monthly activities also include reduced-cost hair cuts, informational speakers and various health clinics including hearing care.

What is now Fulton County Transpo began under Moore’s leadership as a single minivan; however, grants and funding from INDOT and other government agencies provided for its expansion, which, in turn, greatly improved COA’s economic outlook. Transpo, Rusty observed, “keeps this place going yet today.”

“A lot of seniors have been affected by her over the years,” said Rusty of his mother, and many of them will likely be present at the dedication of the Terry Moore Activity Room.

“We’d like to invite anyone who wants to attend,” said current COA Director Doug Beller.

As she turned 102, she celebrated her birthday with a special themed party with her fellow Life Care Center, Rochester, residents. “We did a Derby Days theme” stated Amber Basham, marketing and admissions manager. Snacks and drinks were enjoyed while the Life Care Center staff conducted “horse” races. The residents made Derby hats for the ladies to wear and even a retired racing horse was in attendance from Diamond Equestrian out of Macy. This theme was near and dear to Day’s heart as she herself attended the Kentucky Derby one time.

The Kentucky Derby is a horse race held annually in Louisville, Ky., almost always on the first Saturday of May. Kentucky Derby began back in 1875, and has been running uninterrupted since. It’s one of three Triple Crown races and has the largest attendance numbers of all other races included in the Triple Crown series.

Day attended the race with her daughter, Sienna Deeds, in 1992.

They went on a bus trip with some of their friends. Deeds recalls it being an entertaining bus ride due to the many beer coolers.

While at the Derby, Day decided to take a chance on luck and made a $10 bet on a jockey named Pat Day, based on the fact they shared the same surname.

Basham shares that Day is quite a character still to this day; she explains that all Day wanted for her 102nd birthday was a beer.

“She loved dressing as a clown and being in parades in the local area,” Basham expresses. She also loved going mushroom hunting with her daughter in Michigan.

Kewanna Library seeks donations for summer reading program Kewanna Union Township Public Library, along with several other libraries across the state, is offering a summer reading program to children to encourage them to read for pleasure during the summer.

This year’s theme is “Oceans of Possibilities.” The program will be held May 31 to July 23 and it will be all about the ocean.

Kewanna Library will give free books and make Craft to

Go kits for over 100 youth and young adults in the community for each of the eight weeks of the summer reading program.

To add to the fun and create a sense of challenge to keep everyone reading, the library would like to offer incentives and contest prizes at various times during the summer.

To that end, the library is accepting donations. Possible donations include coupons for

free goods or services or cash to buy items for special prizes.

Any assistance received will be mentioned in publicity and supporters will receive a certificate for display at their business.

The next step in the process is to gather feedback from residents in each of the four communities through the Art Infused community events.

While offering a range of services, the core of Murray’s practice is estate planning. “It’s all about family with us,” he noted, adding successful estate planning starts with the “realization it’s not so much about you as your family.”

Families often come to Murray in crisis situations: A loved one who needs to be placed in a nursing home or needs regular caregiving, for example. However, much of the stress and anxiety of these situations can be avoided with the right planning.

To that end, Murray offers a number of services beyond billable hours. His website offers free workshops to get families and individuals moving in the right direction. These may be viewed online, or, attendees may reserve a spot in-person.

Estate planning workshops, said Murray, include “horror stories,” cautionary tales to be avoided, as well as “great stories,” happy endings resulting from the sorts of preparation in which Murray specializes.

“We get people to examine their lives,” he commented, which

starts a process by which they may realize a “vision for how their lives can play out.”

Murray Law’s website also offers online Guidr documents, enabling beginners with do-it-yourself estate planning documents accessible on your cell phone. “If you want me to assist, I’m available,” he added.

“Estate planning is a process,” Murray emphasized. And it is a process too many start too late in their lives. “I don’t get 25-30 year-old people who come to my workshops,” Murray lamented, and he hopes to reach younger people through these services.

“It’s something everybody should have,” he said.

Along with estate planning — elder law, asset protection and trusts — Murray handles probate and estate administration, will and end of life documentation, real estate — buying and selling of property, land contracts, crop leases and more — family law services and criminal.

Letter to the editor Lions donate to Riley Hospital Dear Editor, The Fulton-Liberty Lions Club would liked to extend a thank you to the many people who supported the Fulton-Liberty Lions Club Fish Fry held on Saturday, April 2. The club would like to report that as of this date, $3,500 of the proceeds will be donated to the Riley Children’s Hospital Assistance Fund of Fulton County and $1,000 will be give to Caston School designated to the new playground fund.

Further ideas have been generated for use of other donations given that night. The Lions Club

is hoping to sponsor one of two free Movie Nights at the Liberty Township Park, a throwback to the decades ago summer nights held in Fulton and other locales.

Other ideas in the planning stages are an Activity Night for children providing parents with a free night, an annual writing contest for Caston High School students, and other thoughts in the process. The club would welcome ideas from the community.
